Abstract The critical challenges of the energy crisis and environmental degradation promote innovative approaches for energy conversion. Semiconductor‐based photocatalytic technology, which transforms solar energy into chemical energy, emerges as a promising solution. However, the practical application of this technology faces several challenges, such as the rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, significantly limiting photocatalytic efficiency. In this review, we provide a detailed discussion, an insightful perspective, and a critical evaluation of recent advances, challenges, and opportunities in the field of photocatalysis using polar materials. We present a comprehensive examination of the photocatalytic mechanisms, activity, and diverse applications of photocatalysts based on polar materials. We also briefly discuss the engineering design of polar photocatalysis in experiments and its scalability in the industry. This review outlines future trends and potential breakthroughs in the photocatalytic field using polar materials, projecting their transformative impact on environmental chemistry and energy engineering.

Abstract Background An increasing number of studies have demonstrated the association of circular RNAs (circRNAs) with the pathological processes of various diseases and their involvement in the onset and progression of multiple cancers. Nevertheless, the functional roles and underlying mechanisms of circRNAs in the autophagy regulation of gastric cancer (GC) have not been fully elucidated. Methods We used transmission electron microscopy and the mRFP-GFP-LC3 dual fluorescent autophagy indicator to investigate autophagy regulation. The cell counting kit-8 assay, colony formation assay, 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine incorporation assay, Transwell assay, and Western blot assay were conducted to confirm circPTPN22’s influence on GC progression. Dual luciferase reporter assays validated the binding between circPTPN22 and miR-6788-5p, as well as miR-6788-5p and p21-activated kinase-1 (PAK1). Functional rescue experiments assessed whether circPTPN22 modulates PAK1 expression by competitively binding miR-6788-5p, affecting autophagy and other biological processes in GC cells. We investigated the impact of circPTPN22 on in vivo GC tumors using a nude mouse xenograft model. Bioinformatics tools predicted upstream regulatory transcription factors and binding proteins of circPTPN22, while chromatin immunoprecipitation and ribonucleoprotein immunoprecipitation assays confirmed the binding status. Results Upregulation of circPTPN22 in GC has been shown to inhibit autophagy and promote cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Mechanistically, circPTPN22 directly binds to miR-6788-5p, subsequently regulating the expression of PAK1, which activates protein kinase B (Akt) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (Erk) phosphorylation. This modulation ultimately affects autophagy levels in GC cells. Additionally, runt-related transcription factor 1 (RUNX1) negatively regulates circPTPN22 expression, while RNA-binding proteins such as FUS (fused in sarcoma) and ELAVL1 (recombinant ELAV-like protein 1) positively regulate its expression. Inhibition of the autophagy pathway can increase FUS expression, further upregulating circPTPN22 in GC cells, thereby exacerbating the progression of GC. Conclusion Under the regulation of the transcription factor RUNX1 and RNA-binding proteins FUS and ELAVL1, circPTPN22 activates the phosphorylation of Akt and Erk through the miR-6788-5p/PAK1 axis, thereby modulating autophagy in GC cells. Inhibition of autophagy increases FUS, which in turn upregulates circPTPN22, forming a positive feedback loop that ultimately accelerates the progression of GC.

The study of microplastics (MPs) in soils is impeded by similarities between plastic and non-plastic particles and the misidentification of MP by current analytical methods such as visual microscopic examination. Soil MPs pose serious ecological and public health risks because of their abundance, persistence, and ubiquity. Thus, reliable identification methods are badly needed for scientific study. One possible solution is UV–Vis–NIR spectroscopy, which has the ability to rapidly identify and quantify concentrations of soil microplastics. In this study, a full-range, field portable spectrometer (350–2500 nm) with ultra-high spectral resolution (1.5 nm, 3.0 nm, and 3.8 nm) identified three types of common plastics: low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polypropylene (PP). Three sets of artificially MP-treated vermiculite soil samples were prepared for model prediction testing and validation: 150 samples for model calibration and 50 samples for model validation. A partial least square regression model using the spectral signatures for quantification of soil and MP mixtures was built with all three plastic polymers. Prediction R2 values of all three polymers showed promising results: polypropylene R2 = 0.943, polyvinyl chloride R2 = 0.983, and polyethylene R2 = 0.957. Our study supports previous work showing that combining ultra-high-resolution UV–Vis–NIR spectrometry with quantitative modeling can improve the accuracy and speed of MP identification and quantification in soil.

Abstract Adipose progenitor cells (APCs) are heterogeneous stromal cells and help to maintain metabolic homeostasis. However, the influence of obesity on human APC heterogeneity and the role of APC subpopulations on regulating glucose homeostasis remain unknown. Here, we find that APCs in human visceral adipose tissue contain four subsets. The composition and functionality of APCs are altered in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). CD9+CD55low APCs are the subset which is significantly increased in T2D patients. Transplantation of these cells from T2D patients into adipose tissue causes glycemic disturbance. Mechanistically, CD9+CD55low APCs promote T2D development through producing bioactive proteins to form a detrimental niche, leading to upregulation of adipocyte lipolysis. Depletion of pathogenic APCs by inducing intracellular diphtheria toxin A expression or using a hunter-killer peptide improves obesity-related glycemic disturbance. Collectively, our data provide deeper insights in human APC functionality and highlights APCs as a potential therapeutic target to combat T2D. All mice utilized in this study are male.

Abstract Background Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is most effectively treated with microvascular decompression (MVD). However, there are certain challenges in performing MVD for HFS when the vertebral artery (VA) is involved in compressing the facial nerve (VA-involved). This study aimed to introduce a “bridge-layered” decompression technique for treating patients with VA-involved HFS and to evaluate its efficacy and safety to treat patients with HFS. Methods A single-center retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of 62 patients with VA-involved HFS. The tortuous trunk of VA was lifted by a multi-point “bridge” decompression technique to avoid excessive traction of the cerebellum and reduce the risk of damage to the facial-acoustic nerve complex. To fully decompress all the responsible vessels, the branch vessels of VA were then isolated using the “layered” decompression technique. Results Among the 62 patients, 59 patients were cured immediately after the surgery, two patients were delayed cured after two months, and one had occasional facial muscle twitching after the surgery. Patients were followed up for an average of 19.5 months. The long-term follow-up results showed that all patients had no recurrence of HFS during the follow-up period, and no patients developed hearing loss, facial paralysis, or other permanent neurological damage complications. Only two patients developed tinnitus after the surgery. Conclusion The “bridge-layered” decompression technique could effectively treat VA-involved HFS with satisfactory safety and a low risk of hearing loss. The technique could be used as a reference for decompression surgery for VA-involved HFS.

Abstract Background Pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) are common gland neoplasms demonstrating distinctive transcription factors. Although the role of immune cells in PitNETs has been widely recognized, the precise immunological environment and its control over tumor cells are poorly understood. Methods The heterogeneity, spatial distribution, and clinical significance of macrophages in PitNETs were analyzed using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), bulk RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, immunohistochemistry, and multiplexed quantitative immunofluorescence (QIF). Cell viability, cell apoptosis assays, and in vivo subcutaneous xenograft experiments have confirmed that INHBA-ACVR1B influences the process of tumor cell apoptosis. Results The present study evaluated scRNA-seq data from 23 PitNET samples categorized into 3 primary lineages. The objective was to explore the diversity of tumors and the composition of immune cells across these lineages. Analyzed data from scRNA-seq and 365 bulk RNA sequencing samples conducted in-house revealed the presence of three unique subtypes of tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) in PitNETs. These subtypes were characterized by varying levels of immune infiltration, ranging from low to intermediate to high. In addition, the NR5A1 lineage is primarily associated with the subtype characterized by limited infiltration of immune cells. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) expressing CX3CR1 + , C1Q + , and GPNMB + showed enhanced contact with tumor cells expressing NR5A1 + , TBX19 + , and POU1F1 +, respectively. This emphasizes the distinct interaction axes between TAMs and tumor cells based on their lineage. Moreover, the connection between CX3CR1 + macrophages and tumor cells via INHBA-ACVR1B regulates tumor cell apoptosis. Conclusions In summary, the different subtypes of TIME and the interaction between TAM and tumor cells offer valuable insights into the control of TIME that affects the development of PitNET. These findings can be utilized as prospective targets for therapeutic interventions.

Abstract Protein arginine methyltransferase 9 (PRMT9) is a recently identified member of the PRMT family, yet its biological function remains largely unknown. Here, by characterizing an intellectual disability associated PRMT9 mutation (G189R) and establishing a Prmt9 conditional knockout (cKO) mouse model, we uncover an important function of PRMT9 in neuronal development. The G189R mutation abolishes PRMT9 methyltransferase activity and reduces its protein stability. Knockout of Prmt9 in hippocampal neurons causes alternative splicing of ~1900 genes, which likely accounts for the aberrant synapse development and impaired learning and memory in the Prmt9 cKO mice. Mechanistically, we discover a methylation-sensitive protein–RNA interaction between the arginine 508 (R508) of the splicing factor 3B subunit 2 (SF3B2), the site that is exclusively methylated by PRMT9, and the pre-mRNA anchoring site, a cis-regulatory element that is critical for RNA splicing. Additionally, using human and mouse cell lines, as well as an SF3B2 arginine methylation-deficient mouse model, we provide strong evidence that SF3B2 is the primary methylation substrate of PRMT9, thus highlighting the conserved function of the PRMT9/SF3B2 axis in regulating pre-mRNA splicing.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to investigate the effects and significance of rituximab (RTX) on the levels of T lymphocyte subsets in patients diagnosed with primary membranous nephropathy (PMN). Methods A total of 58 PMN patients and 25 healthy donors were chosen as the subjects. Among the PMN patients, 40 individuals received RTX treatment and completed at least 6 months of follow-up. All subjects underwent flow cytometry analysis to determine the peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets. The changes in anti-PLA2R antibody titers and 24-hour urinary protein levels were evaluated by ELISA and Biuret method before and after treatment. Results (1) The PMN group exhibited a significantly greater percentage of peripheral blood CD3−CD19+ B cells than the healthy group, which is consistent with the findings of previous reports. Additionally, compared with those in the peripheral blood of healthy individuals, the numbers of CD4+ central memory T cells, CD4+ effector memory T cells, CD4+/CD8+, and CD4+CD25+ T cells in the PMN peripheral blood were markedly greater. However, the number of peripheral blood Treg cells was reduced in the PMN group. (2) After 6 months of RTX treatment, PMN patients exhibited significant decreases in anti-PLA2R antibody titers, 24-hour urinary protein levels, and peripheral blood CD3−CD19+ B cells. Importantly, RTX administration decreased CD4+CD25+ T cells and CD4+/CD8+ in the peripheral blood of PMN patients and improved Treg cell levels. (3) RTX treatment induced alterations in the CD4+ T lymphocyte subsets in PMN patients, which did not correlate with B lymphocyte counts or anti-PLA2R antibody titers. Conclusions RTX treatment might have a beneficial impact on cellular immunity by effectively restoring the balance of CD4+ T lymphocyte subsets in PMN patients, which is beyond its effects on B cells and antibody production. Abstract Objectives To differentiate benign and malignant solitary pulmonary lesions (SPLs) by amide proton transfer-weighted imaging (APTWI), mono-exponential model DWI (MEM-DWI), stretched exponential model DWI (SEM-DWI), and 18F-FDG PET-derived parameters. Methods A total of 120 SPLs patients underwent chest 18F-FDG PET/MRI were enrolled, including 84 in the training set (28 benign and 56 malignant) and 36 in the test set (13 benign and 23 malignant). MTRasym(3.5 ppm), ADC, DDC, α, SUVmax, MTV, and TLG were compared. The area under receiver-operator characteristic curve (AUC) was used to assess diagnostic efficacy. The Logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors and establish prediction model. Surface modification of magnesium alloys was performed using a coating process to optimize their performance. Friction stir processing for preparing magnesium-based high-entropy alloy coatings effectively addressed issues such as oxidation, pores, cracks, and poor coating quality found in existing processes. In addition, it substantially enhanced the hardness and wear resistance of magnesium alloys. The micro-structure and elemental distribution for the cross-section and surface for the magnesium-based high-entropy alloy coating had been studied. The impact of magnesium-based high-entropy alloy upon hardness and wear resistance of the magnesium alloy had been analyzed, focusing on its favorable forming and binding characteristics. Finally, the heat conduction process during friction stir processing were discussed in detail. The theoretical basis for the preparation of magnesium-based high entropy coatings was improved.

AimsThis study aims to assess the status and related factors among healthcare workers (HCWs) in designated quarantine-hospital-site (DQHS) based on the model of health ecology.MethodsThe cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May, 2022, which included 351 valid samples. We measured sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, which encompasses seven dimensions: subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, use of sleep medication, and daytime dysfunction. Each dimension is scored individually, contributing to an overall sleep quality score. Factors associated with the sleep quality of HCWs in DQHS were divided into individual, behavioral, interpersonal and social dimensions. Hierarchical linear regressions were conducted to identify the potential factors associated with sleep quality among HCWs in DQHS.ResultsHCWs in DQHS had a statistically higher sleep quality than the Chinese national norm. Abstract RNA splicing dysregulation and the involvement of specific splicing factors are emerging as common factors in both obesity and metabolic disorders. The study provides compelling evidence that the absence of the splicing factor SRSF1 in mature adipocytes results in whitening of brown adipocyte tissue (BAT) and impaired thermogenesis, along with the inhibition of white adipose tissue browning in mice. Combining single‐nucleus RNA sequencing with transmission electron microscopy, it is observed that the transformation of BAT cell types is associated with dysfunctional mitochondria, and SRSF1 deficiency leads to degenerated and fragmented mitochondria within BAT. The results demonstrate that SRSF1 effectively binds to constitutive exon 6 of Ndufs3 pre‐mRNA and promotes its inclusion. Conversely, the deficiency of SRSF1 results in impaired splicing of Ndufs3, leading to reduced levels of functional proteins that are essential for mitochondrial complex I assembly and activity. Consequently, this deficiency disrupts mitochondrial integrity, ultimately compromising the thermogenic capacity of BAT. These findings illuminate a novel role for SRSF1 in influencing mitochondrial function and BAT thermogenesis through its regulation of Ndufs3 splicing within BAT.

The application of time series forecasting utilizing historical data has become increasingly essential across a variety of industries including finance, healthcare, meteorology, and industrial sectors. The assessment of bond transaction rates in the interbank bond market serves as a crucial indicator for assessing bank risk. In this paper, we proposed a composite model to forecast the transaction interest rates of China’s interbank bonds over a long period. Specifically, our model integrates an intrinsic complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise (ICEEMDAN) model along with various long-term prediction models including long short-term memory network, temporal convolutional network, transformer, and autoformer. Our findings reveal that: 1) predictive performance of different long-term prediction models varies across different frequencies of single time series data; 2) predictive efficacy of diverse model combinations differs across varying prediction time lengths; 3) best results can be realized by using different prediction model combinations for high-frequency, medium-frequency and low-frequency data under different time steps.

We studied the characteristics of coupled-core four-core fibers (CC-4CFs) with different core pitches both theoretically and experimentally. The spatial mode dispersions of different fibers were analyzed, and the result agrees well with theoretical ones. In the experiment, we achieved a spatial mode dispersion as low as 3.72 ps/km1/2 for a 4 km-long CC-4CF with core pitch of 19 μm at a bending radius of 8 cm. The impulse response matrices of four core fibers with different core pitches was investigated using swept-wavelength interferometry over 100 nm bandwidth. The impulse responses were Gaussian-shaped and consistent between different inputs and outputs for CC-4CFs. Our results show that the CC-4CFs with core pitches of 17 and 19 μm exhibit narrower pulse broadening. In addition, the mode-dependent losses of different fibers were analyzed. For the fibers with core pitch of 19 μm, the estimated mode-dependent loss was lower than 3 dB for the entire 100 nm bandwidth. Our results are especially helpful for developing coupled-core multicore fibers for long-haul transmission applications.

The two directly substituted pentazoles, N5NH2 and N5COOH, were designed to theoretically study the relationships between substituents, aromaticity and kinetic stability thereof. Analysis shows their kinetic stability order described by the energy separations between the highest occupied molecule orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecule orbital (LUMO), viz. HOMO-LUMO gap, is line with the aromaticity orders obtained from nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS), harmonic oscillator measure of aromaticity (HOMA), Bird aromaticity index (I) and isochemical shielding surface (ICSS), which is N5NH2 > N5COOH. But this order is contrary to the heat stability order according to Ref [1] The inconsistency between heat stability and kinetic stability reveals the fact that stability of compounds is a complex character and different according to the compound property of the study. The consistency of kinetic stability order with the aromaticity orders described by NICS, NICSSZZ, HOMA, I and ICSS indicates these widely accepted methods for aromaticity estimating are reliable for the two given compounds. As for the effect on aromaticity of pentazole ring from substituent, electron-donating substituent have stronger effect than electron-withdrawing substituent.

Background: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) secondary to a dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is quite rare, and the goal of treatment is to resolve both the fistula and the pain. Case presentation: We herein report a case of TN secondary to a DAVF in a 64-year-old woman with a 1-year history of right-sided TN. Brain magnetic resonance imaging and digital subtraction angiography showed a right tentorial DAVF. Interventional embolization was performed, but the pain was not relieved after the operation. Six months later, we performed microvascular decompression of the trigeminal nerve. During the operation, we electrocoagulated the tortuous and dilated malformed vein, which was compressing the trigeminal nerve, to reduce its diameter and mitigate the compression on the cisternal segment of the trigeminal nerve. That patient's pain was relieved postoperatively. In addition, we reviewed the literature of TN caused by DAVF and found a total of 30 cases, 22 of which were treated by interventional embolization. Of these 22 cases, the interventional embolization healed the fistula with pain relief in 14 cases and healed the fistula without pain relief in 8 cases. We found that the venous drainage methods of the 8 cases were all classified into the posterior mesencephalic group. Conclusions: We believe that this drainage pattern contributes to the more common occurrence of unrelieved pain. For such patients, microvascular decompression can be performed with intraoperative coagulation to narrow the dilated veins until the cisternal segment of the trigeminal nerve is no longer compressed. Satisfactory curative effects can be obtained using this technique.

With the progression of age, the risk of falls in the elderly population escalates. Hip fractures are perceived as one of the most severe consequences of such falls and are often described as “the last fracture in one’s life,” with mortality rates reaching 20%−30% and accompanied by a significant rate of disability. To address this pressing issue, our study conducted an in-depth analysis of the mechanical properties of Artificial Cartilage Foam (ACF) and Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). Based on this research, we devised a laminated structure where ACF acts as the outer layer, with CFRP positioned centrally, capitalizing on the material’s intrinsic shock-absorbing attributes. Building on this structure, based on this structure, a specialized protective clothing design tailored for the elderly to counteract age-related balance impairments is proposed. Furthermore, we undertook experiments to gage user anxiety levels and assess the wearability comfort of the attire. Our findings indicate that this protective garment can effectively absorb the impact energy generated during falls, significantly reducing the risk of injury in the elderly. Additionally, its ergonomic design helps alleviate the psychological distress elderly individuals may experience due to the fear of falling. This research presents an innovative and effective strategy for enhancing fall protection in the elderly demographic.

Background Programmed death 1 (PD-1) inhibitor demonstrated durable antitumor activity in advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), but the clinical benefit of perioperative immunotherapy in ESCC remains unclear. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) combined with the PD-1 inhibitor toripalimab in patients with resectable ESCC.Methods From July 2020 to July 2022, 21 patients with histopathologically confirmed thoracic ESCC and clinical staged as cT1-4aN1-2M0/cT3-4aN0M0 were enrolled. Eligible patients received radiotherapy (23 fractions of 1.8 Gy, 5 fractions a week) with concurrent chemotherapy of paclitaxel/cisplatin (paclitaxel 45 mg/m2 and cisplatin 25 mg/m2) on days 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and two cycles of toripalimab 240 mg every 3 weeks after nCRT for neoadjuvant therapy before surgery, four cycles of toripalimab 240 mg every 3 weeks for adjuvant therapy after surgery. The primary endpoint was the major pathological response (MPR) rate. The secondary endpoints were safety and survival outcomes.Results A total of 21 patients were included, of whom 20 patients underwent surgery, 1 patient refused surgery and another patient was confirmed adenocarcinoma after surgery. The MPR and pathological complete response (pCR) rates were 78.9% (15/19) and 47.4% (9/19) for surgery ESCC patients. 21 patients (100.0%) had any-grade treatment-related adverse events, with the most common being lymphopenia (100.0%), leukopenia (85.7%), neutropenia (52.4%). 14 patients (66.7%) had adverse events of grade 3 with the most common being lymphopenia (66.7%). The maximum standardized uptake value and total lesion glycolysis of positron emission tomography/CT after neoadjuvant therapy well predicted the pathological response. The peripheral CD4+%, CD3+HLA-DR+/CD3+%, CD8+HLA-DR+/CD8+%, and IL-6 were significant differences between pCR and non-pCR groups at different times during neoadjuvant therapy. Three patients had tumor relapse and patients with MPR have longer disease-free survival than non-MPR patients.Conclusions nCRT combined with perioperative toripalimab is effective and safe for locally advanced resectable ESCC. Long-term survival outcomes remain to be determined.Trial registration number NCT04437212.

Abstract Febrile seizures (FS) are the most prevalent type of seizures in children. Existing predictive models for FS exhibit limited predictive ability. To build a better-performing predictive model, a retrospective analysis study was conducted on febrile children who visited the Children's Hospital of Shanghai from July 2020 to March 2021. These children were divided into training set (n = 1453), internal validation set (n = 623) and external validation set (n = 778). The variables included demographic data and complete blood counts (CBCs). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) method was used to select the predictors of FS. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to develop a predictive model. The coefficients derived from the multivariate logistic regression were used to construct a nomogram that predicts the probability of FS. The calibration plot, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate model performance. Abstract Surgery plays a crucial role in the treatment of patients with chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA). However, there is currently limited information available regarding the use of uniportal thoracoscopy (Uni-VATS) in CPA patients. To address this gap, we conducted a retrospective analysis of surgical procedures performed at a single center, aiming to demonstrate the feasibility and safety of Uni-VATS for patients with CPA. We collected basic information and surgical data from patients who underwent surgery for CPA at our hospital between January 2018 and June 2022. All patients received voriconazole antifungal medication for 3–6 months post-surgery and were monitored for a minimum of 6 months. A total of 110 patients, comprising 59 cases in the traditional open chest incision group and 51 cases in the Uni-VATS group, met the inclusion criteria. Among those who underwent surgery, 70% were male (77/110). The median age (IQR) of all enrolled patients was 55 (46–62) years. There were no statistically significant differences in general information, such as age, sex, comorbidities, BMI, FEV1, FVC, clinical symptoms, location of the disease, and duration of voriconazole antifungal medication, between the OS group and the Uni-VATS group (p > 0.05). The postoperative complication rates were 40.7% (24/59) for the traditional open chest incision group and 17.6% (9/51) for the Uni-VATS group. Introduction: Over-activation of oxidative stress due to impaired antioxidant functions in nucleus pulpous (NP) has been identified as a key factor contributing to intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). While Kartogenin (KGN) has previously demonstrated antioxidant properties on articular cartilage against osteoarthritis, its effects on NP degeneration have yet to be fully understood. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of KGN on nucleus pulpous cells (NPCs) against an inflammatory environment induced by interleukin (IL)-1β, as well as to explore the therapeutic potential of KGN-enhanced dynamic hydrogel in preventing IVDD. Methods: NPCs were isolated from rat caudal IVDs and subjected to treatment with KGN at varying concentrations (ranging from 0.01 to 1 ​μM) in the presence of IL-1β. The expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) anabolism markers was quantitatively assessed at both the mRNA and protein levels. Additionally, intracellular reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzyme expression were evaluated, along with the role of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2). Based on these findings, a dynamic self-healing hydrogel loaded with KGN was developed through interconnecting networks. Subsequently, KGN-enhanced dynamic hydrogel was administered into rat caudal IVDs that had undergone puncture injury, followed by radiographic analysis and immunohistochemical staining to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy. Results: In vitro treatments utilizing KGN were observed to maintain ECM synthesis and inhibit catabolic activities in IL-1β-stimulated NPCs. The mechanism behind this protective effect of KGN on NPCs was found to involve the asctivation of NRF2 and downstream antioxidant enzymes, including glutathione peroxidase 1 and heme oxygenase 1. This was further supported by the loss of both antioxidant and anabolic effects upon pharmacological inhibition of NRF2. Furthermore, a self-healing hydrogel was developed and loaded with KGN to achieve localized and sustained release of the compound. The injection of KGN-enhanced hydrogel effectively ameliorated the degradation of NP ECM and mitigated inflammation in a rat model of puncture-induced IVDD. Conclusions: Our results indicate that KGN exhibits potential as a therapeutic agent for NP degeneration, and that KGN-enhanced dynamic hydrogel represents a novel approach for treating IVDD by restoring redox homeostasis in NP.The translational potential of this article: The dysregulation of oxidant and antioxidant balance has been shown to impede the repair and regeneration of NP, thereby hastening the progression of IVDD following injury. The present investigation has demonstrated that the sustained release of KGN promotes the synthesis of ECM in vitro and mitigates the progression of IVDD in vivo by restoring redox equilibrium, thereby presenting a novel therapeutic candidate based on the antioxidant properties of KGN for the treatment of IVDD.

The shadow mode-based regular sampling methods are usually used in the digital control of power inverters, which introduce a control delay of one and a half sampling periods. The control delay affects the closed loop bandwidth and the stability of dc–ac inverters. Recently, regular sampling methods based on the immediate mode is emerging and helpful for reducing the digital control delay. When employing the immediate mode, the induced vertical crossings may arouse the duty-cycle loss and dead-band effect during the modulation process, which deteriorate the normal operation of the inverters. Although the duty-cycle loss can be avoided by forcing the PWM signal to flip at the occurrence of vertical crossings, the introduced dead bands still exist. Thus, this paper investigates the phenomenon of vertical crossings and proposes a control algorithm composed of predicting the occurrence of vertical crossings and compensating the dead-band effect for regular sampling methods based on the immediate mode. Finally, experimental results on a single-phase dc–ac inverter prototype are provided to compare the efficacy of different approaches.

Transient receptor potential (TRP) melastatin member 8 (TRPM8) is a non-selective cation channel that can be activated by low temperatures (8–26 °C), cooling agents (including menthol analogs such as menthol, icilin, and WS-12), voltage, and extracellular osmotic pressure changes. TRPM8 expression has been identified in the digestive system by several research teams, demonstrating its significant involvement in tissue function and pathologies of the digestive system. Specifically, studies have implicated TRPM8 in various physiological and pathological processes of the esophagus, stomach, colorectal region, liver, and pancreas. This paper aims to comprehensively outline the distinct role of TRPM8 in different organs of the digestive system, offering insights for future mechanistic investigations of TRPM8. Additionally, it presents potential therapeutic targets for treating conditions such as digestive tract inflammation, tumors, sensory and functional disorders, and other related diseases. Furthermore, this paper addresses the limitations of existing studies and highlights the research prospects associated with TRPM8.

Intercropping is a vital cropping system that can create a conducive growth environment for crops and enhance land productivity. Tiger nuts (Cyperus esculentus L.) have high oil content and are adaptable to various soil types, making them a promising new oil crop with significant development potential. This study evaluated the plant height, leaf area, tiller numbers, biomass, land equivalent ratio (LER), and root morphological characteristics of tiger nuts. The agronomic traits and root distribution of tiger nuts and other crops were further investigated to achieve the goal of high yield for tiger nuts. Seven intercropping systems were implemented in the experiment: maize–tiger nut intercropping (MT), soybean–tiger nut intercropping (ST), cotton–tiger nut intercropping (CT), monoculture tiger nut (T), monoculture maize (M), monoculture soybean (S), and monoculture cotton (C). The results indicated that under different planting systems, the agronomic traits of tiger nuts in MT and ST modes were superior, with plant height and tiller numbers increasing by 7.6% to 11.6%. However, the plant height and Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) values in CT mode were slightly lower than in T mode. Additionally, intercropping reduced the leaf area by 6.2% to 37.9%. Root development was more pronounced in intercropping modes, with the ST mode showing the most significant improvement, increasing the 0–20 cm root length density (RLD) by 12.2% to 45.7%. Therefore, each of the three intercropping modes demonstrated distinct advantages. The LER of the intercropping systems ranged from 1.10 to 1.24, enhancing land utilization, with tiger nuts being the dominant species. Compared to monoculture, the ST mode exhibited the best overall effect. Understanding the impact of different planting systems on tiger nuts provides valuable insights for developing tiger nut cultivation in Xinjiang.

Microwave hotspots or thermal runaway is a long-standing challenge that severely limits the uniformity of microwave heating. In particular, the evolvement process and suppression methods of focused hotspots in high permittivity dimers are still not clear. In this work, thermal imaging was used to in situ track the microwave hotspots of grape dimers with different gaps and shapes in a multi-mode microwave oven. Two thermal characteristics of microwave resonance-induced focused hotspots, gap sensitivity and shape selectivity, were found. Finite element simulation verified the experimental results and calculated the influence of different conditions on the heating uniformity and the enhanced electric field. The results indicated that gap can gradually weaken the enhanced electric field between grapes and rapidly improve the heating uniformity by approximately 30 times. For dimers of different shapes in contact, the sharper the contact area, the more pronounced the focused hotspots. Moreover, the heating uniformity raises with increasing shape factor n, and when n = ∞, it is improved by about 35 times compared with n = 1. In addition, the enhanced electric field, which exhibits complexity due to microwave scattering interaction between grapes, was analyzed. These findings provide two strategies for improving the heating homogeneity of dimers or particle systems.

Insufficient conservation measures and intense human disturbances gave rise to severe landscape ecological risks (LERs) in transboundary areas, highlighting the significance of transboundary ecological networks to maintain ecological functions and landscape integrity. However, previous studies mainly concerned ecological networks in inner regions of a country, and various risk factors remain to be incorporated into ecological network identification to clarify the priorities for transboundary conservation. In this study, we took the Altai Mountains in the transboundary areas of China, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Mongolia as the study area, and identified transboundary ecological networks by integrating LER assessment, ecosystem service evaluation and circuit theory. The results showed that the LER was spatially heterogenous with salient risk exposure in China and Mongolia, and risk disturbance was mainly aggregated in Russia. The identified transboundary ecological networks included ecological sources with an area of 1.6 × 105 km2 and ecological corridors with a total length of 1.1 × 104 km, densely distributed in Russia and Kazakhstan. The area proportion of ecological sources not covered by existing protected areas reached 53.8 %, indicating priorities for further conservation. We put forward management zoning in different LER grades to better support conservation actions on ecological sources. Furthermore, suggestions were proposed to conserve ecological corridors in typical landscapes of the Altai Mountains. The results of this study can facilitate transboundary conservation plannings and policies in the Altai Mountains. Simultaneously, it also provides a reference for effective conservation of risked ecosystems and landscapes in other transboundary areas.

Background: Omicron had swept the mainland China between December 2022 and January 2023, while SARS-CoV-2 still continued to evolve. To fully prepare for the next wave, it’s urgent to evaluate the humoral immune response post BA.5/BF.7 breakthrough infection against predominant sub-lineages among existing vaccination strategies and the elders. Method: This study enrolled a longitudinal young-adult cohort from 2/3-dose vaccination to 1 month after breakthrough infection, and an elder cohort at 1 month after breakthrough infection. Seral samples were collected and tested for humoral immune response to SARS-CoV-2 subvariants including WT, BA.2, BA.5, BF.7, BQ.1.1, CH.1.1, XBB.1.5. Results: BA.5/BF.7 breakthrough infection induced higher neutralization activity than solely vaccination in all SARS-CoV-2 strains, while the latest Omicron subvariants, BQ.1.1, CH.1.1, XBB.1.5, exhibited the strongest neutralization evasion ability. There was a negative correlation between age and humoral immune response in WT, BA.5, BQ.1.1, and XBB.1.5. Compared to non-vaccination groups, breakthrough infection in two-dose vaccination groups had significantly higher neutralizing antibody against WT, BA.2, BA.5, BF.7 but not to BQ.1.1, CH.1.1, XBB.1.5 while booster dose against the prototype prior-breakthrough would not further significantly enhance individual’s humoral responses against the latest Omicron subvariants. Conclusions: Newer variants manifest increasing immune evasion from neutralization and repeated prototype-based booster vaccines may not further enhance neutralizing antibody against emerging new variants. Older adults have lower levels of neutralizing antibody. Future vaccination strategies should aim to enhance effective neutralization to contemporary variants.

Developing high efficient Pd-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is still challenging for alkaline membrane fuel cell, since the strong oxygen adsorption energy and easy agglomerative intrinsic properties. In order to simultaneously solve these problems, Pd/Co3O4–N–C multidimensional materials with porous structures is designed as the ORR catalysts. In details, the ZIF-67 with polyhedral structure was firstly synthesized and then annealed at high-temperature to prepare the N-doped Co3O4 carbon-based material, which was used to homogeneously confine Pd nanoparticles and obtained the Pd/Co3O4–N–C series catalysts. The formation of Co–N and C–N bond could provide efficient active sites for ORR. Simultaneously, the strong electronic interaction in the interface between the Pd and N-doped Co3O4 could disperse and avoid the agglomeration of Pd nanoparticles and ensure the exposure of active sites, which is crucial to lower the energy barrier toward ORR and substantially enhance the ORR kinetics. Hence, the Pd/Co3O4–N–C nanocompounds exhibited excellent ORR catalytic performance, ideal Pd mass activity, and durability in 0.1 mol L−1 KOH solution compared with Co3O4–N–C and Pd/C. The scalable synthesis method, relatively low cost, and excellent electrochemical ORR performance indicated that the obtained Pd/Co3O4–N–C electrocatalyst had the potential for application on fuel cells.

Abstract Background Surgery is crucial in the treatment of the potentially fatal pulmonary hemoptysis condition. Currently, most patients with hemoptysis are treated by traditional open surgery (OS). To illustrate the effectiveness of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) for hemoptysis, we developed a retrospective study of surgical interventions for lung disease with hemoptysis. Methods We collected and then analysed the data, including general information and post-operative outcomes, from 102 patients who underwent surgery for a variety of lung diseases with hemoptysis in our hospital between December 2018 and June 2022. Results Sixty three cases underwent VATS and 39 cases underwent OS. 76.5% of patients were male (78/102). Comorbidities with diabetes and hypertension were 16.7% (17/102) and 15.7% (16/102) respectively. The diagnoses based on postoperative pathology included aspergilloma in 63 cases (61.8%), tuberculosis in 38 cases (37.4%) and bronchiectasis in 1 case (0.8%). 8 patients underwent wedge resection, 12 patients underwent segmentectomy, 73 patients underwent lobectomy and 9 patients underwent pneumonectomy. There were 23 cases of postoperative complications, of which 7 (30.4%) were in the VATS group, significantly fewer than 16 (69.6%) in the OS group (p = 0.001). The OS procedure was identified as the only independent risk factor for postoperative complications. The median (IQR) of postoperative drainage volume in the first 24 h was 400 (195–665) ml, which was 250 (130–500) ml of the VATS group, significantly less than the 550 (460–820) ml of the OS group (p

Abstract Background The problem of opioid addiction after total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been widely concerned. Tranexamic acid (TXA) has been shown to be effective in reducing blood loss for patients undergoing THA, but few studies focus on its alleviation of postoperative local pain symptoms. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether topical TXA could reduce early postoperative hip pain for primary THA patients, thereby reducing the use of opioids, and whether local pain is related to inflammatory response. Methods In this prospective randomized controlled study, we randomly divided 161 patients into a topical group (n = 79) and an intravenous group (n = 82). Hip pain was assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS) score within three days after surgery and tramadol was used for pain relief when necessary. Inflammatory markers such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), interleukin-6 (IL-6), total blood loss and hemoglobin drop were assessed by hematologic tests. The primary outcomes included the VAS score and dose of tramadol from the first to the third day after surgery. The secondary outcomes included the inflammatory markers level, total blood loss and complications. As single-mode-fiber transmission systems are reaching their capacity limits, spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) techniques have been investigated to increase the per-fiber capacity. However, the compatibility with current single-mode transponders severely hinders the near-term deployment of SDM systems. In this paper, we experimentally propose two real-time SDM transmission schemes using commercial single-mode 400 G dual-polarized 16 quadrature amplitude modulation equipment. In the first experiment, 60 km weakly coupled single-mode 7-core fiber with a pair of fan-in and fan-out devices are adopted. In the second experiment, the fiber link consists of 60 km/150 km weakly coupled few-mode fiber (FMF) and low-modal-crosstalk mode multiplexers, in which only non-degenerate LP01 and LP02 modes are utilized. In order to investigate the effect of splice on SDM fiber links, 20-roll, 3 km multicore fibers (MCFs) and FMFs are spliced and tested in the experiments. The bit error rates of all SDM experiments are all below 4.75 × 10−2 forward-error-correction threshold of the 400 G transponders. The experimental results prove that the near-term deployment of SDM systems could be accelerated by utilizing weakly coupled MCFs or non-degenerate modes of weakly coupled FMFs which are compatible with commercial single-mode transponders without any software or hardware modifications.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are gaining traction in the realm of network communication, renowned for their adaptability, configuration, and flexibility. The forthcoming network traffic within WSNs can be forecasted through temporal sequence models. In this correspondence, we present a method (TSENet) that can accurately predict the traffic in the cellular network. TSENet is composed of transformers and self-attention network. We have designed a temporal transformer module specifically for extracting temporal features. This module accomplishes this by modeling the traffic flow within each grid of the communication network at both near-term and periodical intervals. Simultaneously, we amalgamate the spatial features of each grid with information from its correlated grids, generating spatial predictions within the spatial transformer. Furthermore, we employ self-attention aggregation to capture dependencies between external factor features and cellular data features. Empirical assessments performed on a genuine cellular traffic dataset offer compelling evidence substantiating the efficacy of TSENet.

Abstract Objective Studies have shown that obesity has a significant impact on poor surgical outcomes. However, the relationship between obesity and pediatric epilepsy surgery has not been reported. This study aimed to explore the relationship between obesity and complications of pediatric epilepsy surgery and the effect of obesity on the outcome of pediatric epilepsy surgery, and to provide a reference for weight management of children with epilepsy. Methods A single-center retrospective analysis of complications in children undergoing epilepsy surgery was conducted. Body mass index (BMI) percentiles were adjusted by age and used as a criterion for assessing obesity in children. According to the adjusted BMI value, the children were divided into the obese group (n = 16) and nonobese group (n = 20). The intraoperative blood loss, operation time, and postoperative fever were compared between the two groups. Results A total of 36 children were included in the study, including 20 girls and 16 boys. The mean age of the children was 8.0 years old, ranging from 0.8 to 16.9 years old. The mean BMI was 18.1 kg/m2, ranging from 12.4 kg/m2 to 28.3 kg/m2. Sixteen of them were overweight or obese (44.4%). Obesity was associated with higher intraoperative blood loss in children with epilepsy (p = 0.04), and there was no correlation between obesity and operation time (p = 0.21). Obese children had a greater risk of postoperative fever (56.3%) than nonobese children (55.0%), but this was statistically nonsignificant (p = 0.61). The long-term follow-up outcomes showed that 23 patients (63.9%) were seizure-free (Engel grade I), 6 patients (16.7%) had Engel grade II, and 7 patients (19.4%) had Engel grade III. There was no difference in long-term seizure control outcomes between obese and nonobese groups (p = 0.682). There were no permanent neurological complications after surgery. Conclusion Compared with nonobese children with epilepsy, obese children with epilepsy had a higher intraoperative blood loss. It is necessary to conduct early weight management of children with epilepsy as long as possible.

Medical Ultrasound (US) is one of the most widely used imaging modalities in clinical practice, but its usage presents unique challenges such as variable imaging quality. Deep Learning (DL) models can serve as advanced medical US image analysis tools, but their performance is greatly limited by the scarcity of large datasets. To solve the common data shortage, we develop GSDA, a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based semi-supervised data augmentation method. GSDA consists of the GAN and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The GAN synthesizes and pseudo-labels high-resolution, high-quality US images, and both real and synthesized images are then leveraged to train the CNN. To address the training challenges of both GAN and CNN with limited data, we employ transfer learning techniques during their training. We also introduce a novel evaluation standard that balances classification accuracy with computational time. We evaluate our method on the BUSI dataset and GSDA outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. With the high-resolution and high-quality images synthesized, GSDA achieves a 97.9% accuracy using merely 780 images. Given these promising results, we believe that GSDA holds potential as an auxiliary tool for medical US analysis.

Aims: The study aimed to provide a bibliometric and visual analysis of research on abdominal pain in inflammatory bowel disease and discuss the current status, research hotspots, and future developments.Methods: We used the Web of Science Core Collection to comprehensively search the literature on abdominal pain-related research in IBD published between 2003 and 2022. The bibliometric and visual analysis was performed through CiteSpace, VOSviewer software, R language, and the bibliometric online analysis platform, including authors, institutions, countries, journals, references, and keywords in the literature.Results: A total of 3,503 relevant articles are included, indicating that the number of articles in this field has increased in recent years. The United States leads the way with a dominant position in terms of article output, followed by China and JAPAN. United States (967 articles), University of Calgary (98 articles), and World Journal of Gastroenterology (127 articles) are the top publishing countries, institutions, and journals, respectively; keyword analysis shows that gut microbiota, depression, stress, visceral hypersensitivity, and multidisciplinary approach are the hot spots and trends in this research area.Conclusion: Abdominal pain-related studies in IBD have received increasing attention in the past two decades. This study provides the first bibliometric analysis of papers in this research area using visualization software and data information mining. It provides insights into this field’s current status, hot spots, and trends. However, many outstanding issues in this research area still need further exploration to provide a theoretical basis for its clinical application.

Abstract Dry eye disease (DED) is a common disease associated with disorder of tear secretion. Research on risk factors for DED, such as depression, arthritis, thyroid disease, stroke and diabetes, is important to facilitate its diagnosis and prognosis. We created a dataset on risk factors for DED (DrDED) with public access that can provide up-to-date and validated data acquired from systematically searched and screened, high-quality studies. The established DrDED contained 119 studies published between 2000 and 2022. The range of the study sample size was from 43 to 4,871,504. The study types were, as follows: cross-sectional (n = 92), retrospective cohort (n = 9), prospective cohort (n = 10), and case-control (n = 8) studies. Data from eligible studies were collected and presented for the present study, including the publication information, study characteristics, definition and prevalence of the disease, and risk factors for DED, together with the strength of association. With the publication of new relevant studies, the DrDED will be updated, and the data will be made accessible to the users. Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for incision infection after plate internal fixation for calcaneal fractures by a traditional lateral L-shaped approach. Methods The clinical data of 302 patients with calcaneal fractures who underwent surgical treatment in our hospital from January 2012 to June 2018 were retrospectively analysed, consisting of 177 males and 125 females. The enrolled patients were aged 21 to 75 years, with a mean age of 47.72 years. According to the Sanders classification, 108 patients were type II, 138 patients were type III, and 56 cases were type IV. A univariate analysis was conducted with sex, age, smoking history, history of diabetes, cause of injury, Sanders type, tension blisters, time from injury to surgery, preoperative haemoglobin, preoperative albumin, operation time, and bone grafting as possible risk factors. The factors with statistically significant differences were selected for multivariate binary logistic regression analysis. The clinical cut-off values of these risk factors were calculated using characteristic curves. Results The follow-up lasted for at least 1 year for all patients, with a mean follow-up time of 15.8 months. The results demonstrated 7.9% (24/302) infection rate after plate internal fixation of calcaneal fractures by the traditional lateral L-shaped approach. Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are characterized by sustained inflammation and/or ulcers along the lower digestive tract, and have complications such as colorectal cancer and inflammation in other organs. The current treatments for IBDs, which affect 0.3% of the global population, mainly target immune cells and inflammatory cytokines with a success rate of less than 40%. Results Here we show that berberine, a natural plant product, is more effective than the frontline drug sulfasalazine in treating DSS (dextran sulfate sodium)-induced colitis in mice, and that berberine not only suppresses macrophage and granulocyte activation but also promotes epithelial restitution by activating Lgr5+ intestinal stem cells (ISCs). Mechanistically, berberine increases the expression of Wnt genes in resident mesenchymal stromal cells, an ISC niche, and inhibiting Wnt secretion diminishes the therapeutic effects of berberine. We further show that berberine controls the expression of many circadian rhythm genes in stromal cells, which in turn regulate the expression of Wnt molecules. Conclusions Our findings suggest that berberine acts on the resident stromal cells and ISCs to promote epithelial repair in experimental colitis and that Wnt-β-Catenin signaling may be a potential target for colitis treatment.

Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the most common malignancies in the world, and the search for better markers has become one of the challenges today. It has been found that the L6 superfamily regulates the biological functions of numerous tumors, but transmembrane 4 L six family member 18 (TM4SF18) has been rarely reported. We found that TM4SF18 expression is upregulated in GC tissues and cells, which can be effectively diagnosed and dynamically monitored to assess the prognosis of GC patients. Furthermore, knockdown of TM4SF18 effectively inhibited proliferation, migration, and invasion of GC cells, and affected the epithelial‐mesenchymal transition process. TM4SF18 was found to be an independent prognostic factor for GC by univariate and multifactorial Cox analyses as well as by establishing nomogram plots. In addition, in TM4SF18 and immune correlation analysis, TM4SF18 expression levels were found to be negatively correlated with most immune cell marker genes and associated with numerous immune cells and immune pathways, resulting in less benefit from treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. In summary, we found that TM4SF18 is a promising GC biomarker that promotes the proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities of GC cells, and is associated with immune response.

AIM: To compare the therapeutic effects of intravitreal implantation of dexamethasone and ranibizumab in the treatment of retinal vein occlusion(RVO).METHODS: Retrospective study. A total of 40 patients with ROV were selected, and they were randomly divided into 2 groups according to different treatment. Patients in group A were treated with intravitreal implantation of dexamethasone, while patients in group B were treated with intravitreal injection of ranibizumab. Intraocular pressure, central macular thickness(CMT), best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), superficial vascular complex(SVC)layer, dorsal vasculature complex(DVC)layer, macular vascular density(MVD)of choroid layer and choroidal capillary layer and foveal avascular area(FAZ)of the patients in both groups were measured and compared before and after treatment. Recurrence and adverse reactions were recorded.RESULTS: After treatment for 12mo, the BCVA and CMT of the 2 groups were significantly improved(P0.05). After treatment, there was no significant difference in MVD of SVC layer, choroid layer or choroidal capillary layer between the 2 groups(P>0.05), but the MVD of DVC layer in group A was significantly greater than that in group B(P0.05). Existing Transformer-based models have achieved impressive success in facial expression recognition (FER) by modeling the long-range relationships among facial muscle movements. However, the size of pure Transformer-based models tends to be in the million-parameter level, which poses a challenge for deploying these models. Moreover, the lack of inductive bias in Transformer usually leads to the difficulty of training from scratch on limited FER datasets. To address these problems, we propose an effective and lightweight variant Transformer for FER called VaTFER. In VaTFER, we firstly construct action unit (AU) tokens by utilizing action unit-based regions and their histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) features. Then, we present a novel spatial-channel feature relevance Transformer (SCFRT) module, which incorporates multilayer channel reduction self-attention (MLCRSA) and a dynamic learnable information extraction (DLIE) mechanism. MLCRSA is utilized to model long-range dependencies among all tokens and decrease the number of parameters. DLIE’s goal is to alleviate the lack of inductive bias and improve the learning ability of the model. Furthermore, we use an excitation module to replace the vanilla multilayer perception (MLP) for accurate prediction. To further reduce computing and memory resources, we introduce a binary quantization mechanism, formulating a novel lightweight Transformer model called variant binary Transformer for FER (VaBTFER). We conduct extensive experiments on several commonly used facial expression datasets, and the results attest to the effectiveness of our methods.

Salt stress is a lethal abiotic stress threatening global food security on a consistent basis. In this study, we identified an AP2 and B3 domain-containing transcription factor (TF) named SmRAV1, and its expression levels were significantly up-regulated by NaCl, abscisic acid (ABA), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) treatment. High expression of SmRAV1 was observed in the roots and sepal of mature plants. The transient expression assay in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves revealed that SmRAV1 was localized in the nucleus. Silencing of SmRAV1 via virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) decreased the tolerance of eggplant to salt stress. Significant down-regulation of salt stress marker genes, including SmGSTU10 and SmNCED1, was observed. Additionally, increased H2O2 content and decreased catalase (CAT) enzyme activity were recorded in the SmRAV1-silenced plants compared to the TRV:00 plants. Our findings elucidate the functions of SmRAV1 and provide opportunities for generating salt-tolerant lines of eggplant.

IntroductionOxidative stress and inflammatory responses are critical factors in ulcerative colitis disease pathogenesis. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) modulates oxidative stress and suppresses inflammatory responses, and the protective benefits of Nrf2 activation have been associated with the therapy of ulcerative colitis. MicroRNA-200a (miR-200a) could target Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) and activate the Nrf2-regulated antioxidant pathway. Nevertheless, whether miR-200a modulates the Keap1/Nrf2 pathway in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colonic damage is unknown. Here, our research intends to examine the impact of miR-200a in the model of DSS-induced colitis.MethodsPrior to DSS intervention, we overexpressed miR-200a in mice for four weeks using an adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector to address this problem. ELISA detected the concentration of inflammation-related cytokines. The genes involved in inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress were identified using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blot, and immunofluorescence. Moreover, we applied siRNAs to weakened Nrf2 expression to confirm the hypothesis that miR-200a provided protection via Nrf2.ResultsThe present study discovered miR-200a down-regulation, excessive inflammatory activation, enterocyte apoptosis, colonic dysfunction, and Keap1/Nrf2 antioxidant pathway inactivation in mouse colitis and NCM460 cells under DSS induction. However, our data demonstrated that miR-200a overexpression represses Keap1 and activates the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway, thereby alleviating these adverse alterations in animal and cellular models. Significantly, following Nrf2 deficiency, we failed to observe the protective benefits of miR-200a against colonic damage.DiscussionTaken together, through activating the Keap1/Nrf2 signaling pathway, miR-200a protected against DSS-induced colonic damage. These studies offer an innovative therapeutic approach for ulcerative colitis.

The actual trunk multi-core fiber (MCF) splicing is studied by a 7-core fiber for long-distance transmission. The results show that the quality of MCF splicing affects both transmission loss and crosstalk. The splicing quality is influenced by end-face treatment, discharge intensity, discharge time, electrode spacing and other parameters. By aligning the fibers controlled by the axis algorithm and optimization of the fusion splicing parameter, the typical value of splicing point loss can be less than 0.3 dB, which can better meet the requirements of application for engineering wiring.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the prognostic value and economic benefit of coronary angiography-derived fractional flow reserve (caFFR) guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with coronary artery disease. Methods: All patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) who underwent coronary angiography in our center between April 2021 and November 2021 were retrospectively enrolled and divided into the caFFR guidance group (n = 160) and angiography guidance group (n = 211). A threshold of caFFR≤0.8 was used for revascularization. Otherwise, delayed PCI was preferred. The patients were prospectively followed up by telephone or outpatient service at six months for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) of all-cause death, myocardial infarction or target vessel revascularization, stent thrombosis, and stroke. All in-hospital expenses were recorded, including initial hospitalization and re-hospitalization related to MACE. Results: There was no significant difference in the baseline characteristics between the two groups. There were 2 (1.2%) patients in the caFFR guidance group and 5 (2.4%) patients in the angiography guidance group with MACE events during the following six months.
