Abstract The differentiation of the stroma is a hallmark event during postnatal uterine development. However, the spatiotemporal changes that occur during this process and the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we comprehensively delineated the dynamic development of the neonatal uterus at single-cell resolution and characterized two distinct stromal subpopulations, inner and outer stroma. Furthermore, single-cell RNA sequencing revealed that uterine ablation of Pr-set7, the sole methyltransferase catalyzing H4K20me1, led to a reduced proportion of the inner stroma due to massive cell death, thus impeding uterine development. By combining RNA sequencing and epigenetic profiling of H4K20me1, we demonstrated that PR-SET7-H4K20me1 either directly repressed the transcription of interferon stimulated genes or indirectly restricted the interferon response via silencing endogenous retroviruses. Declined H4K20me1 level caused viral mimicry responses and ZBP1-mediated apoptosis and necroptosis in stromal cells. Collectively, our study provides insight into the epigenetic machinery governing postnatal uterine stromal development mediated by PR-SET7.

Abstract Background Microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) has emerged as a significant biological characteristic of colorectal cancer (CRC). Studies reported that MSI-H CRC generally had a better prognosis than microsatellite stable (MSS)/microsatellite instability-low (MSI-L) CRC, but some MSI-H CRC patients exhibited distinctive molecular characteristics and experienced a less favorable prognosis. In this study, our objective was to explore the metabolic transcript-related subtypes of MSI-H CRC and identify a biomarker for predicting survival outcomes. Methods Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data of MSI-H CRC patients were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. By utilizing the copy number variation (CNV) score, a malignant cell subpopulation was identified at the single-cell level. The metabolic landscape of various cell types was examined using metabolic pathway gene sets. Subsequently, functional experiments were conducted to investigate the biological significance of the hub gene in MSI-H CRC. Finally, the predictive potential of the hub gene was assessed using a nomogram. Results This study revealed a malignant tumor cell subpopulation from the single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. MSI-H CRC was clustered into two subtypes based on the expression profiles of metabolism-related genes, and ENO2 was identified as a hub gene. Functional experiments with ENO2 knockdown and overexpression demonstrated its role in promoting CRC cell migration, invasion, glycolysis, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in vitro. High expression of ENO2 in MSI-H CRC patients was associated with worse clinical outcomes, including increased tumor invasion depth (p = 0.007) and greater likelihood of perineural invasion (p = 0.015). Furthermore, the nomogram and calibration curves based on ENO2 showed potential prognosis predictive performance. Conclusion Our findings suggest that ENO2 serves as a novel prognostic biomarker and is associated with the progression of MSI-H CRC.

Abstract The extended trading close (ETC) provides institutional investors an opportunity to trade at the closing price after the regular trading session (RTS) and disclosing the order imbalances to other market participants. ETCs exist in the Nasdaq, the SSE STAR, the SZSE ChiNext and the TWSE. To help a risk-averse institutional investor take advantage of the RTS and the ETC for liquidation, we develop a multistage dynamic programming model including the ETC, and derive recursive solutions for the multiple trading days scenario with closed-form solutions for the scenario with only two trading days. We also verify that the ETC is able to mitigate extreme price movements caused by fast liquidation, which is also a goal of the ETC set out by the SSE STAR and the SZSE ChiNext. Finally, we derive three results. First, an institutional investor can reduce execution costs after the introduction of the ETC. Second, a critical trading day exists, and to avoid prematurely revealing trading intentions, the investor should not trade in the ETC until such day. Third, even though the ETC orders submitted by the investor are unfilled, implementation of the ETC encourages the investor to change the liquidation strategy in the RTS, which reduces extreme price movements. In summary, the practical implications of this paper are that the investor should not trade during the ETC on the front few days to avoid prematurely revealing the investor’s trading intention by unfilled orders in the ETC and that introducing the ETC can reduce liquidation costs and extreme price movements.

Prominent interfacial bonding can significantly improve the stress transfer efficiency between carbon fibers and matrix, which is the basis of efficient and long-term application of composites. In this paper, a bicomponent collaborative strategy was proposed to fully utilize the advantages of silicon nitride nanowires (SNs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to optimize the interfacial strength of carbon fiber modified double matrix composites (CD), in which the double matrix was represented by polymers-hydroxyapatite and pyrocarbon-hydroxyapatite. The microstructure displayed that SNs were randomly distributed inside CD and completely wrapped by CNTs, which combined to form an interlocking structure. The mechanical and friction behavior of modified and unmodified composites was investigated. The compression strength and shear strength of CNTs-SNs modified carbon fiber/polymers-hydroxyapatite composites were 110 ± 2.39 MPa and 56 ± 1.13 MPa, displaying an increment of 69% and 87%. The wear rate was 0.4 × 10−14 ± 0.008 m3 N−1 m−1, exhibiting a 61% decline. The fracture morphologies were observed to analyze the strengthening mechanism. Interlocked CNTs-SNs could strengthen the effective bonding of fiber/matrix interface and SNs/matrix interface, provide lots of nucleation sites for the matrix, and enhance the matrix cohesion. The enhancement was further verified by a 56% increase in the compression strength (237 ± 4.67 MPa), a 235% increase in the shear strength (77 ± 1.53 MPa), a 78% decrease in wear rate (0.38 × 10−13 ± 0.011 m3 N−1 m−1) of CNTs-SNs modified carbon fiber/pyrocarbon-hydroxyapatite composites, indicating that CNTs-SNs played an indispensable role in making CD possess brilliant mechanical and biological friction properties.

Mimicking the structure of natural bone collagen fibers/hydroxyapatite (HA) to synthesize large size of HA for accelerated bone repair remains a challenge. Herein, silicon nitride nanowires (SN)-graphene (GE) was designed by the chemical vapor deposition, forming SN-GE (SG) similar to collagen fibers. Then, the large size HA was assembled onto SG by pulsed electrochemical deposition, the SG/HA (SGH) mimics the collagen fibers/HA structure of bone. The introduction of SG induces HA to large size grow in the form of coral-like. HA can be grown on a large size inextricably with the existence of GE modified layers. On the one hand, the upright GE sheets effectively increases the surface roughness which enhances the nucleation site of HA. On the other hand, the CO provides chemical bonding and induces HA nucleation. Compared with SN/HA(SH), the porosity of SGH decreased by 71%. The average diameter of the SGH is (9.76 ± 0.25) μm. Compared with SH, the diameter of SGH is 22 times larger than the diameter of SH. Indicating that SG induces large size growth of HA. Our work can provide a general strategy for the efficient preparation of biological scaffolds with large size HA that can be used in bone tissue engineering.

Rapid detection of plant phenotypic traits is crucial for plant breeding and cultivation. Traditional measurement methods are carried out by rich-experienced agronomists, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive. However, with the increasing demand for rapid and high-throughput testing in tea plants traits, digital breeding and smart cultivation of tea plants rely heavily on precise plant phenotypic trait measurement techniques, among which hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology stands out for its ability to provide real-time and rich-information. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the principles of hyperspectral imaging technology, the processing methods of cubic data, and relevant algorithms in tea plant phenomics, reviewing the progress of applying hyperspectral imaging technology to obtain information on tea plant phenotypes, growth conditions, and quality indicators under environmental stress. Lastly, we discuss the challenges faced by HSI technology in the detection of tea plant phenotypic traits from different perspectives, propose possible solutions, and envision the potential development prospects of HSI technology in the digital breeding and smart cultivation of tea plants. This review aims to provide theoretical and technical support for the application of HSI technology in detecting tea plant phenotypic information, further promoting the trend of developing high quality and high yield tea leaves.

Introduction: Rhubarb is a frequently used and beneficial traditional Chinese medicine. Wild resources of these plants are constantly being depleted, meaning that rhubarb products have been subjected to an unparalleled level of adulteration. Consequentially, reliable technology is urgently required to verify the authenticity of rhubarb raw materials and commercial botanical drugs.Methods: In this study, the barcode-DNA high-resolution melting (Bar-HRM) method was applied to characterize 63 rhubarb samples (five Polygonaceae species: Rheum tanguticum, Rh. palmatum, Rh. officinale, Rumex japonicus and Ru. sp.) and distinguish the rhubarb contents of 24 traditional Chinese patent medicine (TCPM) samples. Three markers, namely ITS2, rbcL and psbA-trnH, were tested to assess the candidate DNA barcodes for their effectiveness in distinguishing rhubarb from its adulterants. A segment from ITS2 was selected as the most suitable mini-barcode to identify the botanical drug rhubarb in TCPMs. Then, rhubarbs and TCPM samples were subjected to HRM analysis based on the ITS2barcode.Results: Among the tested barcoding loci, ITS2 displayed abundant sites of variation and was effective in identifying Polygonaceae species and their botanical origins. HRM analysis based on the ITS2 mini-barcode region successfully distinguished the authenticity of five Polygonaceae species and eight batches of TCPMs. Of the 18 TCPM samples, 66.7 % (12 samples) were identified as containing Rh. tanguticum or Rh. officinale. However, 33.3 % were shown to consist of adulterants.Conclusions: These results demonstrated that DNA barcoding combined with HRM is a specific, suitable and powerful approach for identifying rhubarb species and TCPMs, which is crucial to guaranteeing the security of medicinal plants being traded internationally.

Abstract Perovskite materials and their applications in optoelectronics have attracted intensive attentions in recent years. However, in-depth understanding about their anisotropic behavior in ultrafast carrier dynamics is still lacking. Here we explore the ultrafast dynamical evolution of photo-excited carriers and photoluminescence based on differently-oriented MAPbBr3 wafers. The distinct in-plane polarization of carrier relaxation dynamics of the (100), (110) and (111) wafers and their out-of-plane anisotropy in a picosecond time scale were found by femtosecond time- and polarization-resolved transient transmission measurements, indicating the relaxation process dominated by optical/acoustic phonon interaction is related to photoinduced transient structure rearrangements. Femtosecond laser two-photon fabricated patterns exhibit three orders of magnitude enhancement of emission due to the formation of tentacle-like microstructures. Such a ultrafast dynamic study carried on differently-oriented crystal wafers is believed to provide a deep insight about the photophysical process of perovskites and to be helpful for developing polarization-sensitive and ultrafast-response optoelectronic devices.

Abstract Background To explore the value of umbilical artery cord blood glucose (UACBG) in predicting hypoglycemia in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and other at-risk newborns, and to provide a cut-off UACBG value for predicting hypoglycemia occurrence. Methods In this prospective study, we enrolled at-risk infants delivered vaginally, including neonates born to mothers with GDM, premature, macrosomic, and low birth weight. We separated the infants into GDM group and other at-risk group. All subjects underwent UACBG measurement during delivery. Neonatal peripheral blood glucose measurement was performed at 0.5 and 2 h after birth. The predictive performance of UACBG for neonatal hypoglycemia was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), area under curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value (NPV) and positive predictive value (PPV). Results 916 newborns were included, with 538 in GDM group and 378 in other at-risk group. 85 neonates were diagnosed hypoglycemia within 2 h after birth, including 36 belonging to GDM group and 49 to other at-risk group. For hypoglycemia prediction within 2 h, the best cut-off of UACBG was 4.150 mmol/L, yielding an AUC of 0.688 (95% CI 0.625–0.751) and a NPV of 0.933. In detail, the AUC was 0.680 in GDM group (95% CI 0.589–0.771), with the optimal cut-off of 4.150 mmol/L and a NPV of 0.950. In other at-risk group, the AUC was 0.678(95% CI 0.586–0.771), the best threshold was 3.950 mmol/L and the NPV was 0.908. No significant differences were observed between GDM group and other at-risk group in AUC at 0.5 h, 2 h and within 2 h. Conclusions UACBG has a high NPV for predicting neonatal hypoglycemia within 2 h after birth. It was implied that individuals with cord blood glucose levels above the threshold were at lower risk for hypoglycemia. UACBG monitoring provides evidence for subsequent classified management of hypoglycemia.

Building structural type information is the foundation for seismic risk assessment and management since it reflects the behavior of buildings under seismic load. However, in earthquake-prone regions, most of this information is out-of-date or nonexistent. This paper proposes a deep learning-based method for automatically identifying building structural types from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) oblique images. The method consists of four steps: (1) collect facades of buildings with different structural types by web crawler technology as a sample set; (2) construct a convolutional neural network with a facade prior knowledge attention branch and train the model using the sample set; (3) extract building facades from UAV oblique images based on the georeferencing results of feature points as the test set; (4) identify building structural types by inputting the test set into the trained model. Three cases have been selected to verify the feasibility and applicability of the method. The average recall rate of 85% and the average F1 score of 83% have been achieved in areas with regular building distribution. This method integrates multidisciplinary knowledge to provide a solution for rapid collection of building vulnerability information, and expands the role of oblique photography data in urban management and disaster prevention planning.

Two untargeted metabolomics approaches (LC-HRMS and 1H NMR) were combined to classify Amarone wines based on grape withering time and yeast strain. The study employed a multi-omics data integration approach, combining unsupervised data exploration (MCIA) and supervised statistical analysis (sPLS-DA).The results revealed that the multi-omics pseudo-eigenvalue space highlighted a limited correlation between the datasets (RV-score = 16.4%), suggesting the complementarity of the assays. Furthermore, the sPLS-DA models correctly classified wine samples according to both withering time and yeast strains, providing a much broader characterization of wine metabolome with respect to what was obtained from the individual techniques. Significant variations were notably observed in the accumulation of amino acids, monosaccharides, and polyphenolic compounds throughout the withering process, with a lower error rate in sample classification (7.52%).In conclusion, this strategy demonstrated a high capability to integrate large omics datasets and identify key metabolites able to discriminate wine samples based on their characteristics.

The crystal and electronic structures determine a material's physical and chemical properties. Here, using particle swarm optimization method and first-principles calculations, we conducted a systematically investigation on the ordered CuxBey alloys. Two novel stable phase CuxBey (P4¯m2-CuBe3, and I4/mmm-Cu2Be) and five novel metastable CuxBey alloys (F4¯3m-CuBe5, P21/m-CuBe4, P4/mmm-Cu3Be, P4/mmm-Cu4Be, and P4/mmm-Cu5Be) are predicted for the first time. The primary alloying form of ordered CuxBey alloys is the substitution of certain Be atoms for some Cu atoms in the FCC-Cu according to structural study. Obvious valence electrons transfer from Be to Cu and the lattice interstice are observed, which leads to Cu exhibiting negative valence state in CuxBey and Be-rich CuxBey acting as zero-dimensional electrides. Furthermore, these Be-rich CuxBey have good structural stability due to the interaction between interstitial anionic electrons and Be atoms in the Be-tetrahedron. These findings help us in the design and application of CuxBey alloys and related materials.

Abstract Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a traumatic condition of the central nervous system that causes paralysis of the limbs. Micro electric fields (EF) have been implicated in a novel therapeutic approach for nerve injury repair and regeneration, but the effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell-derived small extracellular vesicles that are induced by micro electric fields (EF-sEVs) stimulation on SCI remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether EF-sEVs have therapeutic effects a rat model of SCI. EF-sEVs and normally conditioned human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells-derived small extracellular vesicles (CON-sEVs) were collected and injected intralesionally into SCI model rats to evaluate the therapeutic effects. We detect the expression of candidate long noncoding RNA metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (lncRNA-MALAT1) in EF-sEVs and CON-sEVs. The targets and downstream effectors of lncRNA-MALAT1 were investigated using luciferase reporter assays. Using both in vivo and in vitro experiments, we demonstrated that EF-sEVs increased autophagy and decreased apoptosis after SCI, which promoted the recovery of motor function. We further confirmed that the neuroprotective effects of EF-sEVs in vitro and in vivo correlated with the presence of encapsulated lncRNA-MALAT1 in sEVs. lncRNA-MALAT1 targeted miR-22-3p via sponging, reducing miR-22-3p’s suppressive effects on its target, SIRT1, and this translated into AMPK phosphorylation and increased levels of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2. Collectively, the present study identified that the lncRNA-MALAT1 in EF-sEVs plays a neuroprotective role via the miRNA-22-3p/SIRT1/AMPK axis and offers a fresh perspective and a potential therapeutic approach using sEVs to improve SCI.

Abstract The timely onset of female parturition is a critical determinant for pregnancy success. The highly heterogenous maternal decidua has been increasingly recognized as a vital factor in setting the timing of labor. Despite the cell type specific roles in parturition, the role of the uterine epithelium in the decidua remains poorly understood. This study uncovers the critical role of epithelial SHP2 in parturition initiation via COX1 and COX2 derived PGF2α leveraging epithelial specific Shp2 knockout mice, whose disruption contributes to delayed parturition initiation, dystocia and fetal deaths. Additionally, we also show that there are distinct types of epithelium in the decidua approaching parturition at single cell resolution accompanied with profound epithelium reformation via proliferation. Meanwhile, the epithelium maintains the microenvironment by communicating with stromal cells and macrophages. The epithelial microenvironment is maintained by a close interaction among epithelial, stromal and macrophage cells of uterine stromal cells. In brief, this study provides a previously unappreciated role of the epithelium in parturition preparation and sheds lights on the prevention of preterm birth.

Abstract The sustainable production of value-added N-heterocycles from available biomass allows to reduce the reliance on fossil resources and creates possibilities for economically and ecologically improved synthesis of fine and bulk chemicals. Herein, we present a unique Ru1CoNP/HAP surface single-atom alloy (SSAA) catalyst, which enables a new type of transformation from the bio-based platform chemical furfural to give N-heterocyclic piperidine. In the presence of NH3 and H2, the desired product is formed under mild conditions with a yield up to 93%. Kinetic studies show that the formation of piperidine proceeds via a series of reaction steps. Initially, in this cascade process, furfural amination to furfurylamine takes place, followed by hydrogenation to tetrahydrofurfurylamine (THFAM) and then ring rearrangement to piperidine. DFT calculations suggest that the Ru1CoNP SSAA structure facilitates the direct ring opening of THFAM resulting in 5-amino-1-pentanol which is quickly converted to piperidine. The value of the presented catalytic strategy is highlighted by the synthesis of an actual drug, alkylated piperidines, and pyridine.

ABSTRACT: In this study, transglutaminase (TG), glucono-δ-lactone (GDL), and citric acid (CA) were used to induce the formation of whey protein isolate (WPI)-milk fat emulsion gels to embed lutein, and the emulsion gels induced in different ways were used for the preparation of processed cheese. The protective effect of emulsion gels induced in different ways on lutein was investigated, and the stability of lutein in emulsion gels and processed cheese was analyzed. The results showed that the acidification rate of CA was higher than that of GDL, which was the key step in acid-induced gels, and that the difference in acidification rate led to differences in gel structure. Compared with the 2 acid inducers (GDL and CA), TG exhibited greater potential for forming gel structures with high strength. The TG-induced emulsion gels showed the best physical stability and the highest embedding efficiency for lutein. After heat treatment (85°C), the GDL-induced emulsion gels had higher retention rate of lutein and showed good thermal stability compared with the CA-induced emulsion gels. The processed cheese added with the TG-induced emulsion gel had higher hardness and springiness compared with the processed cheese added with the other 2 kinds of emulsion gels, whereas the processed cheese added with the CA-induced emulsion gel had a lower density of network structure, showing porosity and a larger aggregated structure, but the highest bioavailability of lutein. These results provide valuable information for the formation of cold-set emulsion gel and provide the possibility for the application of emulsion gel embedding active substances in processed cheese.

A variety of techniques have been used for treating avascular necrosis of the femoral head (ANFH), but have frequently failed. In this study, we proposed a β-TCP system for the treatment of ANFH by boosting revascularization and bone regeneration. The angio-conductive properties and concurrent osteogenesis of the highly interconnected porous β-TCP scaffold were revealed and quantified through an in vivo model that simulated the ischemic environment of ANFH. Mechanical test and finite element analysis showed that the mechanical loss caused by tissue necrosis and surgery was immediately partially compensated after implantation, and the strength of the operated femoral head was adaptively increased and eventually returned to normal bone, along with continuous material degradation and bone regeneration. For translational application, we further conducted a multi-center open-label clinical trial to assess the efficacy of the β-TCP system in treating ANFH. Two hundred fourteen patients with 246 hips were enrolled for evaluation, and 82.1% of the operated hips survived at a 42.79-month median follow-up. The imaging results, hip function, and pain scores were dramatically improved compared to preoperative levels. ARCO stage Ⅱ disease outperformed stage Ⅲ in terms of clinical effectiveness. Thus, bio-adaptive reconstruction using the β-TCP system is a promising hip-preserving strategy for the treatment of ANFH.

Halophytic plants possess a huge range of active constituents and medicinal benefits. In this study, extracts (water, ethanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and n-hexane) of two halophytes of the genus Petrosimonia (P. brachiata and P. nigdeensis) were investigated for their phytochemical profiles and pharmacological properties. The phytochemical profiles of both species were investigated using an untargeted metabolomics approach based on high-resolution mass spectrometry. The two species show different polyphenolic profiles and these are influenced by the different extraction solvents used. The same extracts were used for different bioactivity assays. The results show that all extracts yielded total flavonoid and phenolic contents of 11.14–24.22 mg GAE/g and 3.15–22.03 mg RE/g, respectively. While extracts of both species demonstrated a radical scavenging ability in the ABTS assay (16.12–98.02 mg TE/g), only the polar and moderately polar extracts (water, ethanol, and ethyl acetate) showed scavenging potential in the DPPH assay (4.74–16.55 mg TE/g). A reducing potential was also displayed by all extracts in the CUPRAC and FRAP assays (26.02–80.35 mg TE/g and 31.70–67.69 mg TE/g, respectively). The total antioxidant capacity of the extracts ranged from 0.24 to 2.17 mmol TE/g, and the metal chelating activity ranged from 14.74 to 33.80 mg EDTAE/g. The water extracts possessed a higher metal chelating power than the other extracts. All extracts acted as inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (0.16–3.85 mg GALAE/g) and amylase (0.11–1.28 mmol ACAE/g). Moreover, apart from the water extracts, the other extracts also showed anti-butyrylcholinesterase activity (0.73–2.86 mg GALAE/g), as well as anti-tyrosinase (36.74–61.40 mg KAE/g) and anti-glucosidase (2.37–2.73 mmol ACAE/g) potential. In general, the water extracts were found to be weak inhibitors of the tested enzymes, while the ethanol extracts mostly showed an inhibitory effect. The obtained findings revealed the antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory properties of these two species and demonstrated that the solvent type used affected the pharmacological properties of the extracts and hence, can be useful to further investigate the active constituents yielded in the extracts and understand the mechanisms involved.

The primary functions of mitochondria are to produce energy and participate in the apoptosis of cells, with them being highly conserved among eukaryotes. However, the composition of mitochondrial genomes, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication, and mitochondrial inheritance varies significantly among animals, plants, and fungi. Especially in fungi, there exists a rich diversity of mitochondrial genomes, as well as various replication and inheritance mechanisms. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of fungal mitochondria is crucial for unraveling the evolutionary history of mitochondria in eukaryotes. In this review, we have organized existing reports to systematically describe and summarize the composition of yeast-like fungal mitochondrial genomes from three perspectives: mitochondrial genome structure, encoded genes, and mobile elements. We have also provided a systematic overview of the mechanisms in mtDNA replication and mitochondrial inheritance during bisexual mating. Additionally, we have discussed and proposed open questions that require further investigation for clarification.

Epitaxial heterostructures, in particular those 2D vertical heterostructures with close face-to-face contact, are appealing candidates for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Usually, precise control of the growth rate and a seed nanosheet having a small lattice mismatch with the overlayer is essential for the realization of epitaxial growth. Here we present a CO2-initiated solution-phase epitaxial growth strategy to directly fabricate 2D facet-coupled vertical heterostructures without a seed-layer assistant, in which supercritical CO2 liquid can not only manipulate the nucleation and growth of BiOIO3 to match with the epitaxial growth of the Bi2O2CO3 layer, but also provide better wetting conditions to minimize the interfacial energy, thus facilitating the 2D layer-by-layer growth. The obtained heterostructures exhibit the highest CO2-to-CO conversion rate of 224.71 µmol g−1 h−1 in pure water. These findings open up a new platform for highly controlled epitaxial growth of heterostructures.

The impact of duckweed extracts (DEs) on the shelf-life of packaged beef burgers was evaluated through classical assays and untargeted metabolomics. Beef burgers were formulated with an antioxidants-free control (CON), 1 g/kg sodium ascorbate (ASC), and increasing levels of a DEs, namely 1 (DE1), 5 (DE5), and 10 (DE10) g/kg, packaged under modified atmosphere and stored at 4 °C for 19 days. The DEs, abundant in phytochemicals, determined no issues with the hygienic status of the product. DEs modulated the redox status, being ineffective in preserving linolenic acid from peroxidation. However, the oxidation marker 2-nonenoic acid was down-accumulated in the DE10 sample following 19 days of storage, recording a lower glutathione:glutathione disulfide ratio. The accumulation of adipate semialdehyde revealed the inefficiency of DEs in coping with protein oxidation, while DEs prevented the accumulation of biogenic amines. Therefore, this work suggests a potential pro-oxidant role of the formulated DEs.

Abstract Background Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are the predominant cell type of the aortic middle layer, the abnormal number or function of which has been demonstrated to have a role in thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA). Here, this study aimed to identify the function of circ_0008285 in VSMC apoptosis. Methods Human VSMCs were treated with angiotensin II (Ang II) for functional experiments. Cell counting kit‐8, 5‐ethynyl‐2′‐deoxyuridine (EdU), and flow cytometry were applied for function analysis. The interaction between miR‐150‐5p and circ_0008285 or brain acid‐soluble protein 1 (BASP1) was also evaluated by dual‐luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation assay. Exosomes were isolated by the commercial kit. Results A highly expressed circ_0008285 was observed in the aortic tissues of TAA patients and Ang‐II‐induced VSMCs. Circ_0008285 deficiency dramatically reversed Ang‐II‐induced proliferation arrest and apoptosis promotion in VSMCs. Circ_0008285 functionally targeted miR‐150‐5p. MiR‐150‐5p inhibition attenuated the inhibitory effects of circ_0008285 silencing on Ang‐II‐evoked apoptosis in VSMCs. BASP1 was verified to be a target of miR‐150‐5p, and was proved to attenuate miR‐150‐5p‐triggered apoptosis arrest in Ang‐II‐stimulated VSMCs. Additionally, extracellular circ_0008285 was packaged into exosomes, which could be transferred into the recipient cells. Conclusion Circ_0008285 silencing could suppress Ang‐II‐induced VSMCs apoptosis via miR‐150‐5p/BASP1 axis, adding further understanding of the pathogenesis of TAA.

Wheat tiller angle (TA) is an important agronomic trait that contributes to grain production by affecting plant architecture. It also plays a crucial role in high-yield wheat breeding. An association panel and a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population were used to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for TA. Results showed that 470 significant SNPs with 10.4%–28.8% phenotypic variance explained (PVE) were detected in four replicates by a genome-wide association study (GWAS). Haplotype analysis showed that the TA_Hap_4B1 locus on chromosome 4B was a major QTL to regulate wheat TA. Ten QTL were totally detected by linkage mapping with the RIL population, and QTA.hau-4B.1 identified in six environments with the PVE of 7.88%–18.82% was a major and stable QTL. A combined analysis demonstrated that both TA_Hap_4B1 and QTA.hau-4B.1 were co-located on the same region. Moreover, QTA.hau-4B.1 was confirmed by bulked segregant RNA-Seq (BSR-Seq) analysis. Phenotypic analysis showed that QTA.hau-4B.1 was also closely related to yield traits. Furthermore, TraesCS4B02G049700 was considered as a candidate gene through analysis of gene sequence and expression. This study can be potentially used in cloning key genes modulating wheat tillering and provides valuable genetic resources for improvement of wheat plant architecture.

Reppe carbonylation of acetylene is an atom-economic and non-petroleum approach to synthesize acrylic acid and acrylate esters, which are key intermediates in the textile, leather finishing, and polymer industries. In the present work, a noble metal-free Co@SiO2 catalyst was prepared and evaluated in the methoxycarbonylation reaction of acetylene. It was discovered that pretreatment of the catalyst by different reductants (i.e., C2H2, CO, H2, and syngas) greatly improved the catalytic activity, of which Co/SiO2-H2 demonstrated the best performance under conditions of 160 °C, 0.05 MPa C2H2, 4 MPa CO, and 1 h, affording a production rate of 4.38 gMA+MP gcat−1 h−1 for methyl acrylate (MA) and methyl propionate (MP) and 0.91 gDMS gcat−1 h−1 for dimethyl succinate (DMS), respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra of CO adsorption (CO-DRIFTS) measurements revealed that an H2 reduction decreased the size of the Co nanoparticles and promoted the formation of hollow architectures, leading to an increase in the metal surface area and CO adsorption on the catalyst. The hot filtration experiment confirmed that Co2(CO)8 was generated in situ during the reaction or at the pre-activation stage, which served as the genuine active species. Our work provides a facile and convenient approach to the in situ synthetization of Co2(CO)8 for a Reppe carbonylation reaction.

Objective Femoral neck fracture (FNF) is a common clinical trauma with high mortality and disability rates. Furthermore, its incidence increases exponentially with increasing age. Existing classifications have some disadvantages. Thus, this study aimed to establish a novel typing system for FNF. Methods We retrospectively analyzed all adult patients with FNF admitted to our hospital between December 2015 and November 2017 for cannulated screw internal fixation. The study population was divided into the femoral varus offset group (VAR) and the valgus offset group (VAL). The data collected included sex, age, affected side, injury mode, body mass index, complications, pelvic incidence (PI), hip deflection angle (HDA), combined deflection angle (CDA), and neck shaft angle. Statistical analysis was conducted to determine the correlation between complications and deviation angles. A novel typing system was developed and compared with the Garden classification to detect its superiority. Results A total of 108 patients were recruited, with 59 patients in the VAR and 49 patients in the VAL groups. Stealth materials with high dependability at elevated temperatures and outstanding mechanical properties are urgently needed for practical applications. As one-dimensional ultrahigh temperature ceramic (UHTC) materials, zirconium carbide whiskers (ZrCw) have attracted a great deal of attention due to their desirable mechanical and ablation resistance performance in high-temperature environments. We have successfully synthesized ZrCw using a carbothermal reduction technique without the introduction of metal catalytic in this paper. ZrCw shows a typically prismatic structure with the diameter of 1–2 μm and the aspect ratio of up to 250. The growth of ZrCw is controlled by a solid-liquid-solid (SLS) and vapor-solid (VS) compound mechanism in conjunction with the auxiliary action of mesophase Na3ZrF7. The ZrCw/paraffin hybrids achieve the minimum reflection loss (RL(min)) of −25.77 dB at 13.28 GHz under the thickness of 1.25 mm, and reach an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 3.04 GHz (14.96–18.00 GHz) with a thickness of only 1.0 mm. This work presents a promising approach for large-scale producing high-purity whiskers, and verifies that ZrCw has extensive application prospects in the field of stealth materials.

In this mini-review, we discuss the role of NF-κB, a proinflammatory transcription factor, in the expression of genes involved in inflammation, proliferation, and apoptosis pathways, and link it with prognosis of various human cancers, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We and others have shown that NF-κB activity can be impacted by post-translational S-glutathionylation through reversible formation of a mixed disulfide bond between its cysteine residues and glutathione (GSH). Clinical data analysis showed that high expression of NF-κB correlated with shorter overall survival (OS) in NSCLC patients, suggesting a tumor promotion function for NF-κB. Moreover, NF-κB expression was associated with tumor stage, lymph node metastasis, and 5-year OS in these patients. NF-κB was over-expressed in the cytoplasm of tumor tissue compared to adjacent normal tissues. S-glutathionylation of NF-κB caused negative regulation by interfering with DNA binding activities of NF-κB subunits. In response to oxidants, S-glutathionylation of NF-κB also correlated with enhanced lung inflammation. Thus, S-glutathionylation is an important contributor to NF-κB regulation and clinical results highlight the importance of NF-κB in NSCLC, where NF-κB levels are associated with unfavorable prognosis.

While recent targeted and immunotherapies in malignant melanoma are encouraging, most patients acquire resistance, implicating a need to identify additional drug targets to improve outcomes. Recently, attention has been given to pathways that regulate redox homeostasis, especially the lipid peroxidase pathway that protects cells against ferroptosis. Here we identify microsomal glutathione S-transferase 1 (MGST1), a non-selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase, as highly expressed in malignant and drug resistant melanomas and as a specific determinant of metastatic spread and therapeutic sensitivity. Loss of MGST1 in mouse and human melanoma enhanced cellular oxidative stress, and diminished glycolysis, oxidative phosphorylation, and pentose phosphate pathway. Gp100 activated pmel-1 T cells killed more Mgst1 KD than control melanoma cells and KD cells were more sensitive to cytotoxic anticancer drugs and ferroptotic cell death. When compared to control, mice bearing Mgst1 KD B16 tumors had more CD8+ T cell infiltration with reduced expression of inhibitory receptors and increased cytokine response, large reduction of lung metastases and enhanced survival. Targeting MGST1 alters the redox balance and limits metastases in melanoma, enhancing the therapeutic index for chemo- and immunotherapies.

The use of microbial biostimulants in agriculture is recognized as a sustainable approach to promoting crop productivity and quality due to improved nutrient uptake, enhanced stress tolerance, and improved ability to cope with non-optimal environments. The present paper aimed to comparatively investigate the effect of seven different commercial mycorrhizal-based treatments in terms of yield, phytochemical components, and technological traits of Malvasia di Candia Aromatica grape (Vitis vinifera L.) plants. Metabolomic analysis and photosynthetic performance were first investigated in leaves to point out biochemical differences related to plant growth. Higher photosynthetic efficiency and better PSII functioning were found in biostimulant-treated vines, reflecting an overall decrease in photoinhibition compared to untreated plants. Untargeted metabolomics followed by multivariate statistics highlighted a robust reprogramming of primary (lipids) and secondary (alkaloids and terpenoids) metabolites in treated plants. The analysis of berry yield and chemical components exhibited significant differences depending on the biostimulant product. Generally, berries obtained from treated plants displayed improved contents of polyphenols and sugars, while yield remained unchanged. These results elucidated the significant role of microbial biostimulants in determining the quality of grape berries and eliciting biochemical changes in vines.

In addition to be used as a plant protection agent, copper (Cu) is also an essential micronutrient for plant growth and development. The bioavailability of Cu in agricultural systems can be limited due to its specific physical–chemical characteristics, leading to imbalances in plant production. To address this issue, an experimental trial was conducted on Genovese basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) in protected conditions to comparatively evaluate the effects of a vegetable protein hydrolysate (VPH), free Cu and Cu complexed with peptides and amino acids of vegetal origin (Cu and Cu-VPH, respectively), and a combination of VPH and Cu-VPH (VPH+Cu-VPH). The study showed that the combined application of VPH+Cu-VPH led to a significant average increase of 16.3% in fresh yield compared to the untreated Control and Cu treatment. This finding was supported by an improved photosynthetic performance in ACO2 (+29%) and Fv/Fm (+7%). Furthermore, mineral analysis using ICP OES demonstrated that Cu and Cu-VPH treatments determined, on average, a 15.1-, 16.9-, and 1.9-fold increase in Cu in plant tissues compared to control, VPH, and VPH+Cu-VPH treatments, respectively. However, the VPH+Cu-VPH treatment induced the highest contents of the other analyzed ions, except for P. In particular, Mg, Mn, Ca, and Fe, which take part in the constitution of chlorophylls, water splitting system, and photosynthetic electron transport chain, increased by 23%, 21%, 25%, and 32% compared to respective controls. Indeed, this improved the photosynthetic efficiency and the carboxylation capacity of the plants, and consequently, the physiological and productive performance of Genovese basil, compared to all other treatments and control. Consistently, the untargeted metabolomics also pointed out a distinctive modulation of phytochemical signatures as a function of the treatment. An accumulation of alkaloids, terpenoids, and phenylpropanoids was observed following Cu treatment, suggesting an oxidative imbalance upon metal exposure. In contrast, a mitigation of oxidative stress was highlighted in Cu-VPH and VPH+Cu-VPH, where the treatments reduced stress-related metabolites. Overall, these results highlight an interaction between Cu and VPH, hence paving the way towards the combined use of Cu and biostimulants to optimize agronomic interventions.

The annual incidence of suicide among Chinese doctoral students remains high. We reviewed the statistics for doctoral student suicides over the past 12 years and administered a questionnaire survey and interviews to relatives and friends of doctoral students who committed suicide. The results indicated that suicide among doctoral students is closely related to academic pressure, the teacher–student relationship, and the academic environment, reflecting the current condition of China's doctoral tutorial system. This study provides a theoretical basis for society to understand Chinese doctoral student suicide and the Chinese doctoral tutorial system as well as the relationship between the two. Our results may serve as a warning to the academic community to prevent the worsening of the suicide contagion.

ABSTRACT: Low-fat, healthy yogurt is becoming increasingly favored by consumers. In the present study, whey protein emulsion gel microparticles were used to improve the quality of low-fat yogurt, and the effects of vegetable oil emulsion gel as a fat substitute on the qualities of low-fat yogurt were investigated, expecting to obtain healthier and even more excellent quality low-fat yogurt by applying a new method. First, emulsion gel microparticles were prepared, and then particle size distribution of emulsion gel and water holding capacity (WHC), textural properties, rheological properties, microstructure, storage stability, and sensory evaluation of yogurt were carried out. The results showed that yogurt with emulsion gel had significantly superior qualities than yogurt made with skim milk powder, with better WHC, textural properties, rheological properties, and storage stability. The average particle size of whey protein-vegetable oil emulsion gel microparticles was significantly larger than that of whey protein-milk fat emulsion gel microparticles, and the larger particle size affected the structural stability of yogurt. The WHC of yogurt made with whey protein-vegetable oil emulsion gel microparticles (V-EY) was lower (40.41%) than that of yogurt made with whey protein-milk fat emulsion gel microparticles (M-EY; 42.81%), and the texture results also showed that the hardness, consistency, and viscosity index of V-EY were inferior to these of M-EY, whereas no significant differences were found in the cohesiveness. Interestingly, the microstructure of V-EY was relatively flatter, with more and finer network branching. The whey separation between V-EY and M-EY also did not show significant differences during the 14 d of storage. Compared with yogurt made with whey protein, vegetable oil, and skim milk powder, the structure of V-EY remained relatively stable and had no cracks after 14 d of storage. The sensory evaluation results found that the total score of V-EY (62) was only lower than M-EY (65) and significantly higher than that of yogurt made with skim milk powder. The emulsion gel addition improved the sensory qualities of yogurt. Whey protein emulsion gel microparticles prepared from vegetable oil can be applied to low-fat yogurt to replace fat and improve texture and sensory defects associated with fat reduction.

Abstract Background Salmonella infection in livestock and poultry causes salmonellosis, and is mainly treated using antibiotics. However, the misuse use of antibiotics often triggers the emergence of multi-drug-resistant Salmonella strains. Currently, Salmonella phages is safe and effective against Salmonella, serving as the best drug of choice. This study involved 16 Salmonella bacteriophages separated and purified from the sewage and the feces of the broiler farm. A phage, vB_SalP_LDW16, was selected based on the phage host range test. The phage vB_SalP_LDW16 was characterized by the double-layer plate method and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the clinical therapeutic effect of phage vB_SalP_LDW16 was verified by using the pathogenic Salmonella Enteritidis in the SPF chicken model. Results The phage vB_SalP_LDW16 with a wide host range was identified to the family Siphoviridae and the order Caudoviridae, possess a double-stranded DNA and can lyse 88% (22/25) of Salmonella strains stored in the laboratory. Analysis of the biological characteristics, in addition, revealed the optimal multiplicity of infection (MOI) of vB_SalP_LDW16 to be 0.01 and the phage titer to be up to 3 × 1014 PFU/mL. Meanwhile, the phage vB_SalP_LDW16 was found to have some temperature tolerance, while the titer decreases rapidly above 60 ℃, and a wide pH (i.e., 5–12) range as well as relative stability in pH tolerance. The latent period of phage was 10 min, the burst period was 60 min, and the burst size was 110 PFU/cell. Furthermore, gastric juice was also found to highly influence the activity of the phage. The clinical treatment experiments showed that phage vB_SalP_LDW16 was able to significantly reduce the bacterial load in the blood through phage treatment, thereby improving the pathological changes in the intestinal, liver, and heart damage, and promoting the growth and development of the chicken. Conclusions The phage vB_SalP_LDW16 is a highly lytic phage with a wide host range, which can be potentially used for preventing and treating chicken salmonellosis, as an alternative or complementary antibiotic treatment in livestock farming.

Abstract Metastasis and chemical resistance are the most serious problems in the treatment of highly aggressive uveal melanoma (UM). The newly identified lncRNA OUM1 is overexpressed in UM, functions as a catalyst and regulates protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) activity by binding to PTP receptor type Z1 (PTPRZ1), which plays an important role in cell proliferation, metastasis and chemotherapy resistance in the UM microenvironment. Hence, siRNAs that selectively knocking down the lncRNA OUM1 (siOUM1) and its target gene PTPRZ1 (siPTPRZ1) were designed to inhibit the OUM1/PTPRZ1 pathway to reduce PTP activity, and this reduction in activity interrupts protein tyrosine phosphorylation, suppresses UM proliferation and metastasis and improves cisplatin sensitivity in UM cells. Then, to overcome the limitations of the difficulty of drug administration and traditional therapeutics, the indocyanine green (ICG)-labeled manganese metal–organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated and linked with arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) peptide to carry siOUM1/siPTPRZ1 and cisplatin to achieve targeted siRNA interference-mediated therapy, enhanced cisplatin therapy and chemodynamic therapy. This NP system also has a dual-modal imaging ability because ICG is a near-infrared region fluorescent dye and manganese has the potential to be used in magnetic resonance imaging. This study verifies the significance of the newly discovered lncRNA OUM1 as a new therapeutic target for aggressive UM and provides a drug delivery NP system for precise treatment of UM accompanied with a dual-modal imaging ability. Objectives: Environmental, socioeconomic, and genetic factors all are associated with respiratory diseases. We aimed to investigate the association between the ABO blood group and the susceptibility to respiratory diseases. Methods: We constructed a retrospective cohort study of blood donors in Shaanxi, China between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2018, to investigate the impacts of the ABO blood group on the risk of hospitalization due to respiratory diseases. Results: Of 1,686,263 enrolled participants (680,788 females), 26,597 were admitted to the hospital for respiratory diseases. Compared with blood group O, blood groups A, B, and AB all demonstrated a higher risk for diseases of the upper respiratory tract (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision: J30–J39) (ARR (Adjusted relative risk) 1.139, 95% confidence interval [1.106–1.225]; 1.095 [1.019–1.177]; 1.178 [1.067–1.30], respectively). Conversely, blood group A was found to have a lower risk (0.86 [0.747–0.991]) for influenza (J09–J11) and blood group B had a lower risk for pneumonia (J12–J18) (0.911 [0.851–0.976]) than blood group O. Abstract Purpose Divided nevus with verrucous hyperplasia will always recur after surgery but non-verrucous divided eyelid nevus rarely recur. This study analyzed the differential expression of Ki-67, S100, Melan A and HMB45 and identified the correlation between the clinical and histopathological features of verrucous and non-verrucous divided eyelid nevus. Methods This study included 29 patients, of whom 8 patients had verrucous divided nevus. Immunohistochemistry labeling was used to assess the expression of Ki-67, S100, Melan A and HMB45 after excision. The difference between verrucous and non-verrucous divided eyelid nevus was analyzed. Results The patients’ ages ranged from 2 to 59 years, with a mean age of 19 years. The lesion size ranged from 1.5 to 2.0 cm in diameter and invaded the eyelid margins and the posterior lamella of the eyelids. Immunohistochemistry labeling showed strong positivity for approximately 98.5% of S100 and positive staining for approximately 27.6% of Ki-67, 72.4% of Melan A and 6.8% of HMB45. However, Ki-67 was significantly upregulated in verrucous divided nevus of the eyelids compared with non-verrucous divided nevus, with approximately 38.8% upregulation in verrucous and 18.3% upregulation in non-verrucous nevus. Conclusions This study correlated the clinic-pathologic features of verrucous divided eyelid nevus by means of statistically analyzing the varied clinical features and pathological impressions. The significant over-expression of S100 may be used as an indicator of divided nevus of the eyelids, and the over-expressed Ki-67 may contribute to the recurrence of verrucous divided nevus. High expression of HMB45 and Melan A may represent malignant transformation.

Objective: A number of miRNAs and their targets were dragged in the differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs). We aimed to elaborate the underlying molecular mechanisms of miRNA-320a in the osteoblast and adipocyte differentiation. Methods: Trauma-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (TIONFH) and normal control samples (n = 10 for each group) were collected, followed by miRNA chip analysis to identify the differentially expressed miRNAs. H&E staining was used to observe the pathological development of TIONFH. Lentiviral vector was used for overexpression and inhibition of miRNA-320a in vitro. Quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), Western blotting and immunohistochemistry staining were employed to determine the expression of interested genes at mRNA or protein level. Luciferase report assay was employed to determine the binding of miRNA-320a and RUNX2. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Alizarin red staining were performed to observe the osteogenesis and Oil red O staining were conducted to visualize the adipogenesis. Results: Expression of miRNA-320a was up-regulated while RUNX2 expression was down-regulated in TIONFH than Normal control. Luciferase report assay confirmed that miRNA-320a directly targeted to the 3′UTR of RUNX2. miRNA-320a overexpression significantly declined the expressions of osteogenesis-related markers: RUNX2, OSTERIX, Collagen I, Osteocalcin and Osteopontin. ALP and Alizarin red staining confirmed the inhibition function of miRNA-320a in osteogenesis of BMSCs. miRNA-320a inhibition significantly decreased the expression of adipogenesis-related markers: AP2, C/EBPα, FABP4 and PPARγ. Oil Red O staining confirmed the miRNA-320a inhibition reduced adipogenesis of BMSCs. Conclusions: miRNA-320a inhibits osteoblast differentiation via targeting RUNX2 and promotes adipocyte differentiation of BMSCs.

The uneven energy response of radiation detectors severely limits the accuracy of the dose rate meter used for radiation protection. Currently widely used in dose rate meters as a physical method of setting shielding compensation, the energy response correction error of the detector at different energies is mostly between 15 and 25%. This work designs a real-time correction method for energy response based on a novel Cs3Cu2I5:Tl scintillation detector to improve the accuracy of the dose rate meter used for radiation protection. The technique utilizes the idea of pulse amplitude weighting (PAW) to segment the pulse amplitude histogram. This detector achieves an almost constant energy response after our correction. The experimental results show that compared to 137Cs γ rays, the maximum error of the response is 8.26% in the photon energy ranging from 33 keV to 1.25 MeV, which is much better than ±30% of the recommended IEC 61526:2010, verifying the feasibility of PAW.

(1) Background: Rapid and accurate determination of the content of the chemical dye Auramine O(AO) in traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) is critical for controlling the quality of TCMs. (2) Methods: Firstly, various models were developed to detect AO content in Dendrobium officinale (D. officinale). Then, the detection of AO content in Saffron and Curcuma using the D. officinale training set as a calibration model. Finally, Saffron and Curcuma samples were added to the training set of D. officinale to predict the AO content in Saffron and Curcuma using secondary wavelength screening. (3) Results: The results show that the sparrow search algorithm (SSA)-backpropagation (BP) neural network (SSA-BP) model can accurately predict AO content in D. officinale, with Rp2 = 0.962, and RMSEP = 0.080 mg/mL. Some Curcuma samples and Saffron samples were added to the training set and after the secondary feature wavelength screening: The Support Vector Machines (SVM) quantitative model predicted Rp2 fluctuated in the range of 0.780 ± 0.035 for the content of AO in Saffron when 579, 781, 1195, 1363, 1440, 1553 and 1657 cm−1 were selected as characteristic wavelengths; the Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) model predicted Rp2 fluctuated in the range of 0.500 ± 0.035 for the content of AO in Curcuma when 579, 811, 1195, 1353, 1440, 1553 and 1635 cm−1 were selected as the characteristic wavelengths. The robustness and generalization performance of the model were improved. (4) Conclusion: In this study, it has been discovered that the combination of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and machine learning algorithms can effectively and promptly detect the content of AO in various types of TCMs.

The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and tensile properties of an as-cast Al0.6CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) was investigated in this paper. The results show that the as-cast Al0.6CoCrFeNi HEA presents a typical FCC dendrite morphology with the interdendritic region consisting of BCC/B2 structure and heat treatment can strongly affect the microstructure and mechanical properties of HEA. Microstructure analysis revealed the precipitation of a nano-sized L12 phase in the FCC dendrite and the formation of the FCC and σ phases in the interdendritic region after annealing at 700 °C. The coarse B2 phase was directly precipitated from the FCC dendrite in the 900 °C-annealed sample, with the coexistence of the B2, FCC, and σ phases in the interdendritic region. Then, the interdendritic region converted to a B2 and FCC dual-phase structure caused by the re-decomposition of the σ phase after annealing at 1100 °C. The tensile test results show that the 700 °C-annealed HEA presents the most significant strengthening effect, with increments of corresponding yield strength being about 107%, which can be attributed to the numerous nano-sized L12 precipitates in the FCC dendrite. The mechanical properties of 1100 °C-annealed alloy revert to a level close to that of the as-cast alloy, which can be attributed to the coarsening mechanism of B2 precipitates and the formation of a soft FCC phase in the interdendritic region. The observed variation in mechanical properties during heat treatment follows the traditional trade-off relationship between strength and plasticity.

Thymus comosus Heuff ex. Griseb. (Lamiaceae) is a wild thyme species endemic for Romanian Carpathian areas, frequently collected as substitute for collective herbal product Serpylli herba, cited as antibacterial and diuretic remedy in traditional medicine. The present study aimed to evaluate the in vivo diuretic effect and in vitro antimicrobial properties of three herbal preparations (infusion—TCI, tincture—TCT and an hydroethanolic extract prepared through an optimized ultrasound-assisted method—OpTC) obtained from the aerial parts of T. comosus Heuff ex. Griseb, also evaluating their comprehensive phenolic profile. In vivo diuretic effect was tested using Wistar rats treated orally with each herbal preparation (125 and 250 mg/kg dispersed in 25 ml/kg isotonic saline solution) and quantified based on cumulative urine output (ml), diuretic action and diuretic activity. Additionally, sodium and potassium excretion were monitored using a potentiometric method with selective electrodes. In vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities were assessed using p-iodonitrotetrazolium chloride assay against six bacterial strains and six fungal strains by monitoring minimum inhibitory concentration (MICs), minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs). Finally, phenolic profile of the aforementioned herbal extracts was evaluated using an ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) method to check the impact of the different preparations on the most abundant and significant compounds. All the extracts exerted a mild diuretic action, TCT and OpTC inducing the most intense diuretic effect. Both herbal preparations produced a statistically significant, dose-dependent and gradual increase of the urine output, the effect being more intense at 24 h (6.63–7.13 ml/24 h). Potentiometric evaluation of urine samples collected from treated rats revealed a clear and mild natriuretic and kaliuretic effect after the administration. In terms of antimicrobial activity, E. coli (MIC—0.38 mg/ml), B. cereus (MIC—0.75 mg/ml)), Penicillium funiculosum and P. verrucosum var. cyclopium (MIC—0.19 mg/ml) showed the greater sensitivity to the tested extracts, respectively. UHPLC-HRMS screening showed that the bioactive potential of T. comosus herbal preparations was likely related to the higher amounts of phenolic acids (including rosmarinic acid), flavonoids (mainly flavones and derivatives) and other phenolics (such as different isomers of salvianolic acids) in their composition. The obtained results support the ethnopharmacological evidence regarding the mild diuretic and antibacterial potentials of the endemic wild thyme T. comosus, this study being the first one that assessed the aforementioned bioactivities for this species.

ObjectiveTo investigate the critical prognostic factors of patients with traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) treated with endoscopic transnasal optic canal decompression (ETOCD) and to perform multimodal analysis based on imaging examinations of optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and CT scan. Subsequently, a new prediction model was established.MethodsThe clinical data of 76 patients with TON who underwent decompression surgery with the endoscope-navigation system in the Department of Ophthalmology, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The clinical data included demographic characteristics, reasons for injury, interval between injury and surgery, multimode imaging information of CT scan and OCTA, including orbital fracture, optical canal fractures, vessel density of optic disc and macula, and the times of postoperative dressing change. Binary logistic regression was used to establish a model for best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) after treatment as a predictor of TON outcome.ResultsPostoperative BCVA improved in 60.5% (46/76) patients and did not improve in 39.5% (30/76) patients. The times of postoperative dressing change had a significant impact on the prognosis. Other factors affecting the prognosis were microvessel density of the central optic disc, the cause of injury, and the microvessel density above the macula. The area under the raw current curves of the predictive model was 0.7596.ConclusionsThe times of dressing changes after the operation, i.e., continuous treatment, is the key factor affecting prognosis. The microvessel density in the center of the optic disc and superior macula, quantitatively analyzed by OCTA, is the prognostic factor of TON and may be used as a prognostic marker of TON.

Climate change and abiotic stress challenges in crops are threatening world food production. Among others, salinity affects the agricultural sector by significantly impacting yield losses. Plant biostimulants have received increasing attention in the agricultural industry due to their ability to improve health and resilience in crops. The main driving force of these products lies in their ability to modulate plant metabolic processes involved in the stress response. This study’s purpose was to investigate the effect of two biostimulant products, including a protein hydrolysate (Clever HX®) and a seaweed extract with high amino acids content (Ascovip®), and their combination, on the metabolomics profile of tomato crops grown under salt stress (150 mM NaCl). Several stress indicators (leaf relative water content, membrane stability index, and photosynthesis activity) and leaf mineral composition after salinity stress exposure were assessed to evaluate stress mitigation, together with growth parameters (shoot and root biomasses). After that, an untargeted metabolomics approach was used to investigate the mechanism of action of the biostimulants and their link with the increased resilience to stress. The application of the biostimulants used reduced the detrimental effect of salinity. In saline conditions, protein hydrolysate improved shoot dry weight while seaweed extracts improved root dry weight. Regarding stress indicators, the application of the protein hydrolysate was found to alleviate the membrane damage caused by salinity stress compared to untreated plants. Surprisingly, photosynthetic activity significantly improved after treatment with seaweed extracts, suggesting a close correlation between root development, root water assimilation capacity and photosynthetic activity. Considering the metabolic reprogramming after plant biostimulants application, protein hydrolysates and their combination with seaweed extracts reported a distinctive metabolic profile modulation, mainly in secondary metabolite, lipids and fatty acids, and phytohormones biosynthetic pathways. However, treatment with seaweed extract reported a similar metabolic reprogramming trend compared to salinity stress. Our findings indicate a different mechanism of action modulated by protein hydrolysate and seaweed extract, suggesting stronger activity as a stress mitigator of protein hydrolysate in tomato crops under salinity stress.

Globally, energy is considered a backbone for any country's sustainable growth. However, Pakistan has still encountered a massive energy crisis that affects its society economically. Therefore, policymakers keenly focused on distinguishing factors contributing to Pakistan's sustainable energy plan in the current scenario. Given the importance, it is vital to examine technological innovation, institutional quality, public-private partnerships in energy, and GDP with electricity consumption from 1980 to 2019. The study uses novel dynamic ARDL simulations, and Cumulative Fourier Frequency Domain Causality (CFFDC) approaches for empirical estimation. The findings show that GDP and institutional quality have an affirmative short- and long-run effect on energy consumption. On the other hand, technological innovation has a long-term positive influence on electricity consumption. In contrast, public-private partnerships in energy were found insignificant. The outcomes suggest that technological innovation, institutional quality, and GDP are the most effective determinants and have the greatest effect on energy consumption. Other problems must be addressed, such as pervasive corruption and bureaucratic complexities, underdeveloped grids, and insufficient resource management.
