In 2021, California committed to providing universal prekindergarten (UPK) for all 4-year-olds and expanding access for income-eligible 3-year-olds by 2025-2026. California UPK includes several early learning programs, including transitional kindergarten (TK), the California State Preschool Program (CSPP), Head Start, and locally funded early learning programs. To support UPK expansion, California's legislature and administration established the Universal Prekindergarten Planning and Implementation Grant in 2021, which allocated $200 million to all local education agencies (LEAs) serving kindergarteners, which include school districts, charter schools, and county offices of education. The California Department of Education surveyed all grant recipients in August 2023 about their UPK programs. This report provides an update on UPK implementation across the state through an analysis of survey responses from 1,384 LEAs, which represent almost all (95%) public school districts and two thirds (65%) of charter schools that serve elementary grades. Findings provide insights into LEAs' progress in UPK implementation related to service delivery models, facilities and transportation, instruction and assessment, strategies to support student needs, workforce development, implementation challenges, and technical assistance needs. In addition to statewide insights, the survey revealed promising practices and wide access with UPK expansion in California's four largest districts during their first year of implementation. The findings in this report may help policymakers and practitioners identify areas for additional investments and supports.

Selecting a sample generation scheme from multiple text-based generative models is typically addressed by choosing the model that maximizes an averaged evaluation score. However, this score-based selection overlooks the possibility that different models achieve the best generation performance for different types of text prompts. An online identification of the best generation model for various input prompts can reduce the costs associated with querying sub-optimal models. In this work, we explore the possibility of varying rankings of text-based generative models for different text prompts and propose an online learning framework to predict the best data generation model for a given input prompt. The proposed framework adapts the kernelized contextual bandit (CB) methodology to a CB setting with shared context variables across arms, utilizing the generated data to update a kernel-based function that predicts which model will achieve the highest score for unseen text prompts. Additionally, we apply random Fourier features (RFF) to the kernelized CB algorithm to accelerate the online learning process and establish a $\widetilde{\mathcal{O}}(\sqrt{T})$ regret bound for the proposed RFF-based CB algorithm over T iterations. Our numerical experiments on real and simulated text-to-image and image-to-text generative models show RFF-UCB performs successfully in identifying the best generation model across different sample types.

The safety and robustness of large language models (LLMs) based applications remain critical challenges in artificial intelligence. Among the key threats to these applications are prompt hacking attacks, which can significantly undermine the security and reliability of LLM-based systems. In this work, we offer a comprehensive and systematic overview of three distinct types of prompt hacking: jailbreaking, leaking, and injection, addressing the nuances that differentiate them despite their overlapping characteristics. To enhance the evaluation of LLM-based applications, we propose a novel framework that categorizes LLM responses into five distinct classes, moving beyond the traditional binary classification. This approach provides more granular insights into the AI's behavior, improving diagnostic precision and enabling more targeted enhancements to the system's safety and robustness.

In this paper, we explore the quantization of K\"ahler manifolds, focusing on the relationship between deformation quantization and geometric quantization. We provide a classification of degree 1 formal quantizable functions in the Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization, establishing that these formal functions are of the form $f = f_0 - \frac{\hbar}{4\pi}(\Delta f_0 + c)$ for a certain smooth (non-formal) function $f_0$. If $f_0$ is real-valued then $f_0$ corresponds to a Hamiltonian Killing vector field. In the presence of Hamiltonian $G$-symmetry, we address the compatibility between the infinitesimal symmetry for deformation quantization via quantum moment map and infinitesimal symmetry on geometric quantization acting on Hilbert spaces of holomorphic sections via Berezin-Toeplitz quantization.

We mimic the conventional explicit Total Variation Diminishing Runge-Kutta (TVDRK) schemes and propose a class of numerical integrators to solve differential equations on a unit sphere. Our approach utilizes the exponential map inherent to the sphere and employs spherical linear interpolation (SLERP). These modified schemes, named SLERP-TVDRK methods or STVDRK, offer improved accuracy compared to typical projective RK methods. Furthermore, they eliminate the need for any projection and provide a straightforward implementation. While we have successfully constructed STVDRK schemes only up to third-order accuracy, we explain the challenges in deriving STVDRK-r for r \ge 4. To showcase the effectiveness of our approach, we will demonstrate its application in solving the eikonal equation on the unit sphere and simulating p-harmonic flows using our proposed method.

In this article, we examine the role of the recent banner of Spectral Reciprocity within the Langlands Beyond Endoscopy and Braverman-Kazhdan programmes. We present a novel four-variable character sum identity, which serves as a pivotal arithmetic input for the functional equations of automorphic L-functions. This identity can also be interpreted as a twisted, non-archimedean counterpart to Weber-type integrals from the theory of special functions.

BCC lattices with twinned meta-crystal architecture inspired by strengthening of bulk metals have significantly improved mechanical performance; however, their deformation behaviour and underlying strengthening mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we reveal that twinning causes a transition from bending to stretch-dominated behaviour in BCC lattices, violating the Gibson-Ashby model, and eliciting vast improvements in stiffness (+181%) and strength (+128%). By controlling a heterogenous distribution of twinned grain boundaries, inspired by bimodal harmonic microstructure, we amplify the axial strain energy at location specific sites, further enhancing the stiffness of twinned BCC lattices by 11.1%. Our lattice design philosophy unleashes the potential of cellular materials for high-performance engineering applications.

From autonomous driving to package delivery, ensuring safe yet efficient multi-agent interaction is challenging as the interaction dynamics are influenced by hard-to-model factors such as social norms and contextual cues. Understanding these influences can aid in the design and evaluation of socially-aware autonomous agents whose behaviors are aligned with human values. In this work, we seek to codify factors governing safe multi-agent interactions via the lens of responsibility, i.e., an agent's willingness to deviate from their desired control to accommodate safe interaction with others. Specifically, we propose a data-driven modeling approach based on control barrier functions and differentiable optimization that efficiently learns agents' responsibility allocation from data. We demonstrate on synthetic and real-world datasets that we can obtain an interpretable and quantitative understanding of how much agents adjust their behavior to ensure the safety of others given their current environment., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are unique probes of extragalactic ionized baryonic structure as each signal, through its burst properties, holds information about the ionized matter it encounters along its sightline. FRB 20200723B is a burst with a scattering timescale of $\tau_\mathrm{400\,MHz} >$1 second at 400 MHz and a dispersion measure of DM $\sim$ 244 pc cm$^{-3}$. Observed across the entire CHIME/FRB frequency band, it is the single-component burst with the largest scattering timescale yet observed by CHIME/FRB. The combination of its high scattering timescale and relatively low dispersion measure present an uncommon opportunity to use FRB 20200723B to explore the properties of the cosmic web it traversed. With an $\sim$arcminute-scale localization region, we find the most likely host galaxy is NGC 4602 (with PATH probability $P(O|x)=0.985$), which resides $\sim$30 Mpc away within a sheet filamentary structure on the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster. We place an upper limit on the average free electron density of this filamentary structure of $\langle n_e \rangle < 4.6^{+9.6}_{-2.0} \times 10^{-5}$ cm$^{-3}$, broadly consistent with expectations from cosmological simulations. We investigate whether the source of scattering lies within the same galaxy as the FRB, or at a farther distance from an intervening structure along the line of sight. In this paper, we propose multicontinuum splitting schemes for multiscale problems, focusing on a parabolic equation with a high-contrast coefficient. Using the framework of multicontinuum homogenization, we introduce spatially smooth macroscopic variables and decompose the multicontinuum solution space into two components to effectively separate the dynamics at different speeds (or the effects of contrast in high-contrast cases). By treating the component containing fast dynamics (or dependent on the contrast) implicitly and the component containing slow dynamics (or independent of the contrast) explicitly, we construct partially explicit time discretization schemes, which can reduce computational cost. The derived stability conditions are contrast-independent, provided the continua are chosen appropriately. Additionally, we discuss possible methods to obtain an optimized decomposition of the solution space, which relaxes the stability conditions while enhancing computational efficiency. A Rayleigh quotient problem in tensor form is formulated, and simplifications are achieved under certain assumptions. Finally, we present numerical results for various coefficient fields and different continua to validate our proposed approach. It can be observed that the multicontinuum splitting schemes enjoy high accuracy and efficiency.

This work introduces advanced computational techniques for modeling the time evolution of compact binary systems using machine learning. The dynamics of compact binary systems, such as black holes and neutron stars, present significant nonlinear challenges due to the strong gravitational interactions and the requirement for precise numerical simulations. Traditional methods, like the post-Newtonian approximation, often require significant computational resources and face challenges in accuracy and efficiency. Here, we employed machine learning algorithms, including deep learning models like Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN), to predict the future evolution of these systems based on extensive simulation data. Our results demonstrate that employing both LSTM and TCN even as black-box predictors for sequence prediction can also significantly improve the prediction accuracy without PINNs as PDE solvers with prior knowledge or inductive bias. By employing LSTM and TCN, we obtained $R^2$ values of 99.74\% and 99.19\% for the evolutionary orbits of compact binaries dataset, respectively. Our models demonstrate the ability to effectively capture the dynamics of the binaries, achieving high prediction performance with significantly reduced computational overhead by a factor of 40, compared to conventional numerical methods. This work explores a collaborative method for ensuring safety in multi-agent formation control problems. We formulate a control barrier function (CBF) based safety filter control law for a generic distributed formation controller and extend our previously developed collaborative safety framework to an obstacle avoidance problem for agents with acceleration control inputs. We then incorporate multi-obstacle collision avoidance into the collaborative safety framework. This framework includes a method for computing the maximum capability of agents to satisfy their individual safety requirements. We analyze the convergence rate of our collaborative safety algorithm, and prove the linear-time convergence of cooperating agents to a jointly feasible safe action for all agents under the special case of a tree-structured communication network with a single obstacle for each agent. In this paper, we will describe its relationships with 2d mirror symmetry. This could be regarded as a 3d analog of the paper "Mirror Symmetry is T-Duality" by Strominger, Yau and Zaslow which described 2d mirror symmetry via 1d dualities.

The Coastal underwater evidence search system with surface-underwater collaboration is designed to revolutionize the search for artificial objects in coastal underwater environments, overcoming limitations associated with traditional methods such as divers and tethered remotely operated vehicles. Our innovative multi-robot collaborative system consists of three parts, an autonomous surface vehicle as a mission control center, a towed underwater vehicle for wide-area search, and a biomimetic underwater robot inspired by marine organisms for detailed inspections of identified areas. We present our analysis of supernovae serendipitously found to be radio-bright several years after their optical discovery. We used recent observations from the Australian SKA Pathfinder taken as part of the pilot Variables and Slow Transients and Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey programs. We identified 29 objects by cross-matching sources from these ASKAP observations with known core-collapse supernovae below a declination of $+40^{\circ}$ and with a redshift of $z\leq0.15$. Our results focus on eight cases that show potential late-time radio emission. These supernovae exhibit significantly greater amounts of radio emission than expected from the standard model of a single shockwave propagating through a spherical circumstellar medium, with a constant density structure produced by regular stellar mass-loss. We also discuss how we can learn from future ASKAP surveys about the circumstellar environments and emission mechanisms of supernovae that undergo late-time radio re-brightening. Anterior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is associated with severe adverse remodeling and increased mortality rates. In this study, anterior STEMI patients were treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention and then imaged with cardiac magnetic resonance 1-2 days later. The cine images were analyzed with computational feature-tracking algorithms to assess end-systolic circumferential (ESC) strain. It was found that contractile function is not only depressed in the infarct and border zone regions, but also in the remote myocardium. This is contrary to other types of infarctions where remote myocardium shows enhanced compensatory function. Recognizing the challenges with current tornado warning systems, we investigate alternative approaches. In particular, we present a database engi-neered system that integrates information from heterogeneous rich data sources, including climatology data for tornadoes and data just before a tornado warning. The system aids in predicting tornado occurrences by identifying the data points that form the basis of a tornado warning. Evaluation on US data highlights the advantages of using a classification forecasting recurrent neural network (RNN) model. The results highlight the effectiveness of our database engineered system for big data analytics on tornado climatology-especially, in accurately predict-ing tornado lead-time, magnitude, and location, contributing to the development of sustainable cities.

In this paper, we relate $L(1,\pi,\mathrm{Ad}^\circ)$ to the congruence ideals for cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over any number field. We then use this result to deduce relationships between the congruences of automorphic forms and adjoint $L$-functions. We consider a financial market in which the short rate is modeled by a continuous time Markov chain (CTMC) with a finite state space. In this setting, we show how to price any financial derivative whose payoff is a function of the state of the underlying CTMC at the maturity date. We also show how to replicate such claims by trading only a money market account and zero-coupon bonds. Finally, using an extension of Ross' Recovery Theorem due to Qin and Linetsky, we deduce the real-world dynamics of the CTMC.

UI prototyping often involves iterating and blending elements from examples such as screenshots and sketches, but current tools offer limited support for incorporating these examples. Inspired by the cognitive process of conceptual blending, we introduce a novel UI workflow that allows developers to rapidly incorporate diverse aspects from design examples into work-in-progress UIs. We prototyped this workflow as Misty. Through an exploratory first-use study with 14 frontend developers, we assessed Misty's effectiveness and gathered feedback on this workflow. Our findings suggest that Misty's conceptual blending workflow helps developers kickstart creative explorations, flexibly specify intent in different stages of prototyping, and inspires developers through serendipitous UI blends. Misty demonstrates the potential for tools that blur the boundaries between developers and designers.

We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. We present the first forward-rapidity measurements of elliptic anisotropy of open-heavy-flavor muons at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are based on data samples of Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The measurements are performed in the pseudorapidity range $1.2<|\eta|<2$ and cover transverse momenta $1

2D metal halide perovskites have enabled significant stability improvements in perovskite devices, particularly in resistance to moisture. However, some 2D perovskites are even more susceptible to photooxidation compared to 3D perovskites. This is particularly true for more commonly investigated Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites that exhibit increased susceptibility to photoinduced degradation compared to Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskites. Comparisons between different RP and DJ perovskites reveal that this phenomenon cannot be explained by commonly proposed differences in superoxide ion generation, interlayer distance and lattice structural rigidity differences. Instead, the resistance to photooxidation of DJ perovskites can be attributed to decreased likelihood of double deprotonation events (compared to single deprotonation events in RP perovskites) required for the loss of organic cations and the perovskite decomposition. Consequently, DJ perovskites are less susceptible to oxidative degradation (both photo- and electrochemically induced), which leads to improved operational stability of solar cells based on these materials., Comment: Main text: 19 pages, 6 figures, supplementary information: 62 pages, 47 figures

The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) Project has a new VLBI Outrigger at the Green Bank Observatory (GBO), which forms a 3300km baseline with CHIME operating at 400-800MHz. Using 100ms long full-array baseband "snapshots" collected commensally during FRB and pulsar triggers, we perform a shallow, wide-area VLBI survey covering a significant fraction of the Northern sky targeted at the positions of compact sources from the Radio Fundamental Catalog. In addition, our survey contains calibrators detected from two 1s long trial baseband snapshots for a deeper survey with CHIME and GBO. In this paper, we present the largest catalog of compact calibrators suitable for 30-milliarcsecond-scale VLBI observations at sub-GHz frequencies to date. Our catalog consists of 200 total calibrators in the Northern Hemisphere that are compact on 30-milliarcsecond scales with fluxes above 100mJy. This calibrator grid will enable the precise localization of hundreds of FRBs a year with CHIME/FRB-Outriggers.

In galaxies with significant ongoing star formation there is an impressively tight correlation between total infrared luminosity (L$_{TIR}$) and H$\alpha$ luminosity (L$_{H\alpha}$), when H$\alpha$ is properly corrected for stellar absorption and dust attenuation. This long-standing result gives confidence that both measurements provide accurate estimates of a galaxy's star formation rate (SFR), despite their differing origins. To test the extent to which this holds in galaxies with lower specific SFR (sSFR=SFR/Mgal, where Mgal is the stellar mass), we combine optical spectroscopy from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) with multi-wavelength (FUV to FIR) photometric observations from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA). We find that L$_{TIR}$/L$_{H\alpha}$increases steadily with decreasing H$\alpha$ equivalent width (W$_{H\alpha}$, a proxy for sSFR), indicating that both luminosities cannot provide a valid measurement of SFR in galaxies below the canonical star-forming sequence. For both `retired galaxies' and `post-starburst galaxies', L$_{TIR}$/L$_{H\alpha}$ can be up to a factor of 30 larger than for star-forming galaxies. The smooth change in L$_{TIR}$/L$_{H\alpha}$, irrespective of star formation history, ionisation or heating source, dust temperature or other properties, suggests that the value of L$_{TIR}$/L$_{H\alpha}$ is given by the balance between star-forming regions and ambient interstellar medium contributing to both L$_{TIR}$ and L$_{H\alpha}$. While L$_{H\alpha}$ can only be used to estimate the SFR for galaxies with W$_{H\alpha}$ > 3A (sSFR $\gtrsim 10^{-11.5}$/yr), we argue that the mid- and far-infrared can only be used to estimate the SFR of galaxies on the star-forming sequence, and in particular only for galaxies with W$_{H\alpha}$ >10 A (sSFR $\gtrsim 10^{-10.5}$/yr). We present the radio afterglow of short gamma-ray burst (GRB) 230217A, which was detected less than 1 day after the gamma-ray prompt emission with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). The ATCA rapid-response system automatically triggered an observation of GRB 230217A following its detection by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and began observing the event just 32 minutes post-burst at 5.5 and 9 GHz for 7 hours. Dividing the 7-hour observation into three time-binned images allowed us to obtain radio detections with logarithmic central times of 1, 2.8 and 5.2 hours post-burst, the first of which represents the earliest radio detection of any GRB to date. The decline of the light curve is consistent with reverse shock emission if the observing bands are below the spectral peak and not affected by synchrotron self-absorption. This makes GRB 230217A the fifth short GRB with radio detections attributed to a reverse shock at early times ($<1$ day post-burst). Following brightness temperature arguments, we have used our early radio detections to place the highest minimum Lorentz factor (${\Gamma}_{min} > 50$ at $\sim1$ hour) constraints on a GRB in the radio band. We present a sample of 50 H-alpha detected broad-line active galactic nuclei (BLAGN) at redshifts 3.50), independent of the contributions of emission lines to the broadband photometry. We construct the black hole (BH) mass function at 3.5

Accurate prediction of global sea surface temperature at sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) timescale is critical for drought and flood forecasting, as well as for improving disaster preparedness in human society. Government departments or academic studies normally use physics-based numerical models to predict S2S sea surface temperature and corresponding climate indices, such as El Ni\~no-Southern Oscillation. However, these models are hampered by computational inefficiencies, limited retention of ocean-atmosphere initial conditions, and significant uncertainty and biases. Here, we introduce a novel three-dimensional deep learning neural network to model the nonlinear and complex coupled atmosphere-ocean weather systems. This model incorporates climatic and temporal features and employs a self-attention mechanism to enhance the prediction of global S2S sea surface temperature pattern. Compared to the physics-based models, it shows significant computational efficiency and predictive capability, improving one to three months sea surface temperature predictive skill by 13.7% to 77.1% in seven ocean regions with dominant influence on S2S variability over land. This achievement underscores the significant potential of deep learning for largely improving forecasting skills at the S2S scale over land.

The $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ charmonium states, composed of $c\bar{c}$ quark pairs and known since the 1970s, are widely believed to serve as ideal probes to test quantum chromodynamics in high-energy hadronic interactions. However, there is not yet a complete understanding of the charmonium-production mechanism. Recent measurements of $J/\psi$ production as a function of event charged-particle multiplicity at the collision energies of both the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) show enhanced $J/\psi$ production yields with increasing multiplicity. One potential explanation for this type of dependence is multiparton interactions (MPI). We carry out the first measurements of self-normalized $J/\psi$ yields and the $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio at both forward and backward rapidities as a function of self-normalized charged-particle multiplicity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. In addition, detailed {\sc pythia} studies tuned to RHIC energies were performed to investigate the MPI impacts. We find that the PHENIX data at RHIC are consistent with recent LHC measurements and can only be described by {\sc pythia} calculations that include MPI effects. The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to survey star formation over cosmological time scales using intensity mapping in the 420 - 540 GHz frequency range. EXCLAIM uses a fully cryogenic telescope coupled to six on-chip spectrometers featuring kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) to achieve high sensitivity, allowing for fast integration in dark atmospheric windows. The telescope receiver is cooled to $\approx$ 1.7 K by immersion in a superfluid helium bath and enclosed in a superfluid-tight shell with a meta-material anti-reflection coated silicon window. In addition to the optics and the spectrometer package, the receiver contains the magnetic shielding, the cryogenic segment of the spectrometer readout, and the sub-Kelvin cooling system. A three-stage continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR) keeps the detectors at 100 mK while a $^4$He sorption cooler provides a 900 mK thermal intercept for mechanical suspensions and coaxial cables. We present a set of photometric catalogs primarily aimed at providing the community with a comprehensive database for the study of galaxy populations in the high redshift Universe. The set gathers data from eight JWST NIRCam observational programs, targeting the Abell 2744 (GLASS-JWST, UNCOVER, DDT2756 and GO3990), EGS (CEERS), COSMOS and UDS (PRIMER), and GOODS North and South (JADES and NGDEEP) deep fields, for a total area of $\sim$0.2 sq. degrees. Photometric estimates are obtained by means of well-established techniques, including tailored improvements designed to enhance the performance on the specific dataset. We also include new measurements from HST archival data, thus collecting 16 bands spanning from 0.44 to 4.44 $\mu$m. A grand total of $\sim$530 thousand sources is detected on stacks of NIRCam 3.56 and 4.44 $\mu$m mosaics. We assess the photometric accuracy by comparing fluxes and colors against archival catalogs. We also provide photometric redshift estimates, statistically validated against a large set of robust spectroscopic data. We present radio observations of the long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) 221009A which has become known to the community as the Brightest Of All Time or the BOAT. Our observations span the first 475 days post-burst and three orders of magnitude in observing frequency, from 0.15 to 230GHz. By combining our new observations with those available in the literature, we have the most detailed radio data set in terms of cadence and spectral coverage of any GRB to date, which we use to explore the spectral and temporal evolution of the afterglow. By testing a series of phenomenological models, we find that three separate synchrotron components best explain the afterglow. The high temporal and spectral resolution allows us to conclude that standard analytical afterglow models are unable to explain the observed evolution of GRB 221009A. We explore where the discrepancies between the observations and the models are most significant and place our findings in the context of the most well-studied GRB radio afterglows to date. Our observations are best explained by three synchrotron emitting regions which we interpret as a forward shock, a reverse shock and an additional shock potentially from a cocoon or wider outflow. Finally, we find that our observations do not show any evidence of any late-time spectral or temporal changes that could result from a jet break but note that any lateral structure could significantly affect a jet break signature., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. We present a spectro-temporal analysis of 137 fast radio bursts (FRBs) from the first CHIME/FRB baseband catalog, including 125 one-off bursts and 12 repeat bursts, down to microsecond resolution using the least-squares optimization fitting routine: fitburst. Our measured values are compared with those in the first CHIME/FRB intensity catalog, revealing that nearly one-third of our sample exhibits additional burst components at higher time resolutions. We measure sub-burst components within burst envelopes as narrow as $\sim$23 $\mu$s (FWHM), with 20% of the sample displaying sub-structures narrower than 100 $\mu$s, offering constraints on emission mechanisms. Scattering timescales in the sample range from 30 $\mu$s to 13 ms at 600 MHz. We observe no correlations between scattering time and dispersion measure, rotation measure, or linear polarization fraction, with the latter suggesting that depolarization due to multipath propagation is negligible in our sample. Bursts with narrower envelopes ($\leq$ 1 ms) in our sample exhibit higher flux densities, indicating the potential presence of sub-ms FRBs that are being missed by our real-time system below a brightness threshold. Most multicomponent bursts in our sample exhibit sub-burst separations of $\leq$ 1 ms, with no bursts showing separations $<$41 $\mu$s, even at a time resolution of 2.56 $\mu$s, but both scattering and low signal-to-noise ratio can hinder detection of additional components. Lastly, given the morphological diversity of our sample, we suggest that one-off and repeating FRBs can come from different classes but have overlapping property distributions., Comment: 25 pages 14 figures

Given an integer $m \geq 2$ and a sufficiently large $q$, we apply a variant of the Maynard--Tao sieve weight to establish the existence of an arithmetic progression with common difference $q$ for which the $m$-th least prime in such progression is $\ll_m q$, which is best possible. As we vary over progressions instead of fixing a particular one, the nature of our result differs from others in the literature. Furthermore, we generalize our result to dynamical systems. Since the invention of GPT2--1.5B in 2019, large language models (LLMs) have transitioned from specialized models to versatile foundation models. The LLMs exhibit impressive zero-shot ability, however, require fine-tuning on local datasets and significant resources for deployment. Traditional fine-tuning techniques with the first-order optimizers require substantial GPU memory that exceeds mainstream hardware capability. Therefore, memory-efficient methods are motivated to be investigated. Model compression techniques can reduce energy consumption, operational costs, and environmental impact so that to support sustainable artificial intelligence advancements. Additionally, large-scale foundation models have expanded to create images, audio, videos, and multi-modal contents, further emphasizing the need for efficient deployment. Therefore, we are motivated to present a comprehensive overview of the prevalent memory-efficient fine-tuning methods over the network edge. We also review the state-of-the-art literatures on model compression to provide a vision on deploying LLMs over the network edge.

SPIDER is a balloon-borne instrument designed to map the cosmic microwave background at degree-angular scales in the presence of Galactic foregrounds. SPIDER has mapped a large sky area in the Southern Hemisphere using more than 2000 transition-edge sensors (TESs) during two NASA Long Duration Balloon flights above the Antarctic continent. During its first flight in January 2015, SPIDER observed in the 95 GHz and 150 GHz frequency bands, setting constraints on the B-mode signature of primordial gravitational waves. Its second flight in the 2022-23 season added new receivers at 280 GHz, each using an array of TESs coupled to the sky through feedhorns formed from stacks of silicon wafers. These receivers are optimized to produce deep maps of polarized Galactic dust emission over a large sky area, providing a unique data set with lasting value to the field. SuperBIT was a 0.5-meter near-ultraviolet to near-infrared wide-field telescope that launched on a NASA superpressure balloon into the stratosphere from New Zealand for a 45-night flight. SuperBIT acquired multi-band images of galaxy clusters to study the properties of dark matter using weak gravitational lensing. We provide an overview of the instrument and its various subsystems. We then present the instrument performance from the flight, including the telescope and image stabilization system, the optical system, the power system, and the thermal system. SuperBIT successfully met the instrument's technical requirements, achieving a telescope pointing stability of 0.34 +/- 0.10 arcseconds, a focal plane image stability of 0.055 +/- 0.027 arcseconds, and a PSF FWHM of ~ 0.35 arcseconds over 5-minute exposures throughout the 45-night flight. The telescope achieved a near-diffraction limited point-spread function in all three science bands (u, b, and g). We develop a theoretical framework to describe how zero-photon detection may be utilized to enhance laser cooling via the anti-Stokes interaction and, somewhat surprisingly, enable cooling via the Stokes interaction commonly associated with heating. Our description includes both pulsed and continuous measurements as well as optical detection efficiency and open-system dynamics. For both cases, we discuss how the cooling depends on the system parameters such as detection efficiency and optomechanical cooperativity, and we study the continuous-measurement-induced dynamics, contrasting to single-photon detection events. For the Stokes case, we explore the interplay between cooling and heating via optomechanical parametric amplification, and we find the efficiency required to cool a mechanical oscillator via zero-photon detection. This work serves as a companion article to the recent experiment [E. A. Cryer-Jenkins, K. D. Major, et al., arXiv:2408.01734 (2024)], which demonstrated enhanced laser cooling of a mechanical oscillator via zero-photon detection on the anti-Stokes signal. The framework developed here provides new approaches for cooling mechanical resonators that can be applied to a wide range of areas including nonclassical state preparation, quantum thermodynamics, and avoiding the often unwanted heating effects of parametric amplification., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Throughout quantum science and technology, measurement is used as a powerful resource for nonlinear operations and quantum state engineering. In particular, single-photon detection is commonly employed for quantum-information applications and tests of fundamental physics. By contrast, and perhaps counter-intuitively, measurement of the absence of photons also provides useful information, and offers significant potential for a wide range of new experimental directions. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate cooling of a mechanical resonator below its laser-cooled mechanical occupation via zero-photon detection on the anti-Stokes scattered optical field and verify this cooling through heterodyne measurements. Our measurements are well captured by a stochastic master equation and the techniques introduced here open new avenues for cooling, quantum thermodynamics, quantum state engineering, and quantum measurement and control., Comment: Main: 5 pages, 2 figures. Distributed quantum computing (DQC) is a new paradigm aimed at scaling up quantum computing via the interconnection of smaller quantum processing units (QPUs). Shared entanglement allows teleportation of both states and gates between QPUs. This leads to an attractive horizontal scaling of quantum processing power, which comes at the expense of the additional time and noise introduced by entanglement sharing protocols. Consequently, methods for partitioning quantum circuits across multiple QPUs should aim to minimise the amount of entanglement-based communication required between distributed QPUs. Existing protocols tend to focus primarily on optimising entanglement costs for gate teleportation or state teleportation to cover operations between QPUs, rather than both at the same time. The most general form of the problem should treat gate and state teleportation on the same footing, allowing minimal cost circuit partitions through a combination of the two. This work introduces a graph-based formulation which allows joint optimisation of gate and state teleportation cost, including extensions of gate teleportation which group gates together for distribution using common resources. The formulation permits low e-bit cost for a variety of circuit types. Using a basic genetic algorithm, improved performance over state-of-the-art methods is obtained in terms of both average e-bit cost and time scaling., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures

Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized decision-making processes and systems throughout society and, in particular, has emerged as a significant technology in high-impact scenarios of national interest. Yet, despite AI's impressive predictive capabilities in controlled settings, it still suffers from a range of practical setbacks preventing its widespread use in various critical scenarios. In particular, it is generally unclear if a given AI system's predictions can be trusted by decision-makers in downstream applications. To address the need for more transparent, robust, and trustworthy AI systems, a suite of tools has been developed to quantify the uncertainty of AI predictions and, more generally, enable AI to "self-assess" the reliability of its predictions. In this manuscript, we categorize methods for AI self-assessment along several key dimensions and provide guidelines for selecting and designing the appropriate method for a practitioner's needs. In particular, we focus on uncertainty estimation techniques that consider the impact of self-assessment on the choices made by downstream decision-makers and on the resulting costs and benefits of decision outcomes. To demonstrate the utility of our methodology for self-assessment design, we illustrate its use for two realistic national-interest scenarios. This manuscript is a practical guide for machine learning engineers and AI system users to select the ideal self-assessment techniques for each problem.

Critical parameters are the key to superconductivity research, and reliable instrumentations can facilitate the study. Traditionally, one has to use several different measurement techniques to measure critical parameters separately. In this work, we develop the use of a single species of quantum sensor to determine and estimate several critical parameters with the help of independent simulation data. We utilize the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in the diamond, which recently emerged as a promising candidate for probing exotic features in condensed matter physics. The non-invasive and highly stable nature provides extraordinary opportunities to solve scientific problems in various systems. Using a high-quality single-crystalline YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{8}$ (YBCO) as a platform, we demonstrate the use of diamond particles and a bulk diamond to probe the Meissner effect. The evolution of the vector magnetic field, the $H-T$ phase diagram, and the map of fluorescence contour are studied via NV sensing. Our results reveal different critical parameters, including lower critical field $H_{c1}$, upper critical field $H_{c2}$, and critical current density $j_{c}$, as well as verifying the unconventional nature of this high-temperature superconductor YBCO. Therefore, NV-based quantum sensing techniques have huge potential in condensed matter research.

Frequency conversion is a widely realized physical process in nonlinear systems of optics and electronics. As an emerging nonlinear platform, spintronic devices have the potential to achieve stronger frequency conversion. Here, we demonstrated a microwave frequency conversion method in a hybrid quantum system, integrating nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond with magnetic thin film CoFeB. We achieve a conversion bandwidth ranging from 0.1 to 12GHz, presenting an up to $\mathrm{25^{th}}$ order frequency conversion and further display the application of this method for frequency detection and qubits coherent control. Distinct from traditional frequency conversion techniques based on nonlinear electric response, our approach employs nonlinear magnetic response in spintronic devices. The nonlinearity, originating from the symmetry breaking such as domain walls in magnetic films, presents that our method can be adapted to hybrid systems of other spintronic devices and spin qubits, expanding the application scope of spintronic devices and providing a promising on-chip platform for coupling quantum systems., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures
