The huge amount of data enforces great pressure on the processing efficiency of database systems. By leveraging the in-situ computing ability of emerging nonvolatile memory, processing-in-memory (PIM) technology shows great potential in accelerating database operations against traditional architectures without data movement overheads. In this article, we introduce ReSQM, a novel ReCAM-based accelerator, which can dramatically reduce the response time of database systems. The key novelty of ReSQM is that some commonly used database queries that would be otherwise processed inefficiently in previous studies can be in-situ accomplished with massively high parallelism by exploiting the PIM-enabled ReCAM array. ReSQM supports some typical database queries (such as SELECTION, SORT, and JOIN) effectively based on the limited computational mode of the ReCAM array. ReSQM is also equipped with a series of hardware-algorithm co-designs to maximize efficiency. We present a new data mapping mechanism that allows enjoying in-situ in-memory computations for SELECTION operating upon intermediate results. We also develop a count-based ReCAM-specific algorithm to enable the in-memory sorting without any row swapping. The relational comparisons are integrated for accelerating inequality join by making a few modifications to the ReCAM cells with negligible hardware overhead. The experimental results show that ReSQM can improve the (energy) efficiency by $611\times $ ($193\times $), $19\times $ ($17\times $), $59\times $ ($43\times $), and $307\times $ ($181\times $) in comparison to a 10-core Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 processor for SELECTION, SORT, equi-join, and inequality join, respectively. The amount and frequency of reverse flow in microchannel evaporators largely depends on the thermophysical properties of the working fluid. In this study, four refrigerants (R134a, R1234yf, R245fa and R32) are examined in the same air conditioning system operated under flash gas bypass mode with venting of reversed vapor (to provide better control of the flow). The flow rate and frequency of reversed vapor are measured for each refrigerant. It has been found that fluids with lower heat of vaporization and higher specific volume difference between vapor and liquid phase) tend to generate more reversed vapor flow. Experimental results validate qualitatively and in most cases quantitatively the mechanistic model presented in Li and Hrnjak (2017a). Boiling instability and periodic flow reversal are commonly seen in microchannel heat exchangers, but have been studied in air conditioning systems only recently. The amount and frequency of reverse flow largely depends on the geometry of the channels. This paper presents results obtained in a R134a automotive air conditioning system operated under flash gas bypass mode with venting of reversed vapor (to provide better control of the flow). Results for multiple microchannel evaporators with different channel diameters and lengths are presented. The mass flow rate and frequency of reversed vapor are measured for each geometry. Meanwhile, a mechanistic model is developed to simulate the bubble dynamics inside of a single microchannel tube. This model is validated against experimental data and employed to explain the effect of channel length and diameter on flow reversal. Periodic flow reversal are commonly present in microchannel heat exchangers, but have been studied in air conditioning systems only recently. This paper presents the effect of periodic reverse flow on the heat transfer performance of a heat exchanger. Two heat exchangers with identical geometries in the heat transfer areas are employed and an artificial upstream flow resistance is added for one of them. The heat exchanger without artificial flow resistance is subject to more severe boiling instabilities and consequently generates four times more reverse vapor flow than the other one. The comparison of capacities under identical operating conditions reveals that higher intensity of reverse flow helps to improve cooling capacity by up to 13.3%. Meanwhile, numerical simulations of bubble dynamics coupled with heat transfer are carried out for both heat exchangers. Results show that in the heat exchanger with more reverse flow, the refrigerant side heat transfer coefficients are enhanced, especially in the upstream part of a channel where the flow velocity is relatively low. Two leading edge channels of a microchannel evaporator are made transparent to visualize the flow regimes inside. The evaporator is operated in an automotive air conditioning system under both two-phase refrigerant feeding and liquid refrigerant feeding modes. The flow regimes in the microchannels are different in these two operation modes. In two-phase feeding mode: churn, bubbly/slug, and annular flows occur alternatively, but the period of each flow regime is not constant. Flow reversal is only witnessed occasionally in bubbly/slug flow regime. In liquid feeding mode, only liquid and bubbly/slug flows are observed. Reverse flow occurs periodically. The duration of flow reversal is shorter in two-phase feeding mode than in liquid feeding mode. Most likely it is due to higher upstream resistance caused by two-phase refrigerant feeding. A newly developed mechanistic model of bubble dynamics in single microchannel is presented in this paper. The comparison between high-speed visualization and simulation results shows that this model is capable of capturing the transient flow regime and slug velocity inside of single microchannel and predicting flow reversal. The model quantitatively demonstrates the mechanism of flow reversal. Within one periodic cycle, the evolvement of flow regime, pressure distribution along channel length and mass flux at tube inlet are well correlated with each other. This paper presents the further development of Li and Hrnjak's (2013) microchannel heat exchanger model which includes the thermodynamic and transport properties of refrigerant–oil mixture. Effect of lubricant is accounted in boiling heat transfer, pressure drop and refrigerant distribution. A newly proposed infrared thermography based method is implemented in the model to describe the liquid refrigerant distribution in the inlet header of the microchannel heat exchanger. The new model is validated against experimental results (R134a-PAG 46 oil) at various oil circulation ratios (0.1%–8.3%). Simulation results also indicate that lubricant addition improves refrigerant distribution which is in agreement with experiments and the infrared thermography based method enables the model capture lubricant effect on capacity more comprehensively. Recent studies have reported that thermal aging of insulation paper affects its moisture absorption property, which can affect moisture equilibrium in oil-paper insulation. In engineering practice, Fessler's model is one of the most widely used methods to estimate the moisture content of paper through measurement of moisture content of oil. However, this model lacks consideration of the thermal aging effect on equilibrium moisture. This study comprehensively investigated the effect of thermal aging on moisture equilibrium in oil-paper insulation. Based on the accelerated ageing and moisture measurements, the equilibrium moisture content of insulation paper with different aging and temperatures were obtained. The effects of aging condition and the temperature on equilibrium moisture are discussed and Fessler's model was modified accordingly. The results show that: 1) the decreasing of specific surface area is the dominant factor that affects the moisture equilibrium in oil-paper insulation, which is caused by thermal aging; 2) the modified Fessler model is reasonable and suitable to estimate the equilibrium moisture content of insulation paper with different aging. Thermal aging of insulation paper has obvious effects on its moisture absorption property. The presented studies aim to investigating the effects of aging on moisture diffusion in oil-immersed insulation paper. Based on the experimental designs and preparation of experimental materials, the transient moisture contents of insulation paper with different aging status were obtained at different conditions. Then, the experimental results were discussed. Furthermore, the diffusion factors and equilibrium time constants were extracted based on the model of moisture diffusion in oil-immersed insulation paper, which are applicable to our studies. Finally, the effects of thermal aging on the diffusion factor and equilibrium time constant were analyzed. The results show that: 1) With the aging of insulation paper, the rate of moisture absorption increases, and the equilibrium moisture content of insulation paper decreases at the same temperature. Besides, the equilibrium time constant decreases with aging at the same temperature. 2) Considering the effects of aging, thickness of insulation paper and temperature, the empirical expression of diffusion factor was obtained and verified.
