Following a burgeoning literature on private actors under digital authoritarianism, this study aims to understand the role played by social media users in sustaining authoritarian rule. It examines a subcultural community—the queer-fantasy community—on Chinese social media to expound how members of this community interpreted China's censorship policy, interacted based on the interpretation, and participated in censorship. Integrating structural topic modeling and emergent coding, this study finds that a political environment of uncertainty fostered divergent imaginaries about censorship. These imaginaries encouraged participatory censorship within the online community, which strengthened the political control of the Internet in the absence of the state. This study illuminates how participatory censorship works, especially in non-professional and non-politically mobilized online communities. With a focus on social media users, it also offers a lens for future research to compare peer-based surveillance and content moderation in authoritarian and democratic contexts. Measuring the orientation, mass and body length of migratory insects through entomological radar is crucial for early warnings of migratory pests. The fully polarized entomological radar is an efficient device for observing migratory insects by calculating insect parameters through the scattering matrix obtained from the target. However, the measured target scattering matrix will be affected by system polarization measurement errors, leading to errors in insect parameter calculation, while the related analysis is currently relatively limited. Therefore, the scattering matrix measurement process is modeled, followed by an analysis of the effects of different errors on orientation, mass and body length estimation. The influence of polarization measurement errors on insect scattering characteristics is also analyzed. The results present that for fixed polarization measurement errors, the measurement errors of insect orientation, mass and body length will vary with insect orientation in specific patterns, and the distribution of measured insect parameters will be drastically distorted compared to the true parameter distribution. In addition, polarization measurement errors could seriously disrupt the reciprocity and bilateral symmetry of the measured insect scattering matrix. Biochar is widely used as a soil amendment in green roofs because it can increase the soil's water-holding capacity, inhibit cracking, and provide nutrients for vegetation. The interaction mechanism between biochar and expansive soil is a significant factor in the performance of green roofs. However, research mainly focused on the hydrological scale (i.e. runoff regulation and rainwater storage), and there is a lack of research on the hydrological properties (i.e. hysteresis of soil–water characteristic curves, changes in soil pore size and pore distribution, formation and development of cracks and swelling–shrinking characteristics) of biochar-amended expansive soils under dynamic water environment. This test was conducted out on soil columns with expansive soil and 5% (by mass) biochar-amended under 5 drying–wetting cycles. The results showed that within the range of water content suitable for plant growth (i.e. between the anaerobic point and wilting point), the hysteresis area of soil–water characteristic curves of the amended soil is smaller than the bare soil at each drying–wetting cycle. The addition of biochar changes the pore size distribution of the soil, reduces the pore size and swelling–shrinking characteristics of the expansive soil, and inhibits the development of cracks. Therefore, the addition of biochar significantly attenuates the hysteresis characteristics of the soil–water characteristic curves of expansive soils, which may improve the stability of the hydraulic performance of green roofs. The results contribute to the understanding of the physicochemical and water properties of biochar-amended expansive soil and provide theoretical support for the application of biochar to green roofs. This paper improves the performance of the model by Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) and Firefly Algorithm (FA) to optimize the financial investment risk prediction model. It studies the application of GCN in financial investment risk prediction model and elaborates on the role of FA in the model. To further improve the accuracy of the prediction model, this paper optimizes and improves the FA and verifies the effectiveness of the optimized model through experiments. Experimental results show that the optimized model performs well in feature selection, and the optimal accuracy of feature selection reaches 91.9%, which is much higher than that of traditional models. Meanwhile, in the analysis of the number of iterations of the model, the performance of the optimized algorithm gradually tends to be stable. When the number of iterations is 30, the optimal value is found. In the simulation experiment, when an unexpected accident occurs, the prediction accuracy of the model decreases, but the prediction performance of the optimized algorithm proposed here is significantly higher than that of the traditional model. In conclusion, the optimized model has high accuracy and reliability in financial investment risk prediction, which provides strong support for financial investment decision-making. Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) have enabled controllable image synthesis for many vision and graphics applications. However, recent cGANs are 1-2 orders of magnitude more compute-intensive than modern recognition CNNs. For example, GauGAN consumes 281G MACs per image, compared to 0.44G MACs for MobileNet-v3, making it difficult for interactive deployment. In this work, we propose a general-purpose compression framework for reducing the inference time and model size of the generator in cGANs. Directly applying existing compression methods yields poor performance due to the difficulty of GAN training and the differences in generator architectures. We address these challenges in two ways. First, to stabilize GAN training, we transfer knowledge of multiple intermediate representations of the original model to its compressed model and unify unpaired and paired learning. Second, instead of reusing existing CNN designs, our method finds efficient architectures via neural architecture search. To accelerate the search process, we decouple the model training and search via weight sharing. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method across different supervision settings, network architectures, and learning methods. Entomological radar is a specially designed instrument that can measure the behavioral and biological characteristics of high-altitude migrating insects. Its application is of great significance for the monitoring, early warning, and control of agricultural pests. As an important component of the local migratory biomass, insects fly in the air during the day and night. The fully polarimetric entomological radar was carefully designed with all-day, all-weather, and multi-function measurement capabilities. The fully polarimetric entomological radar measures the mass of a single insect based on the radar cross-sectional (RCS) measurement and then calculates the biomass of migrating insects. Therefore, the measurement accuracy of the insect RCS is the key indicator affecting the accuracy of migratory biomass statistics. Due to the radar's lack of in-beam angle measurement ability, the insect RCS is usually measured based on the assumption that the insect is on the beam center. Therefore, the measured RCS will be smaller than true value if the insect deviates from the beam center due to the gain curve of the antenna. This leads to measurement errors in regard to the insect mass and migratory biomass. In order to solve this problem, a biomass estimation method, reported in this paper, was designed under the assumption of a uniform distribution of migrating insects in the radar monitoring airspace. This method can estimate the individual RCS expectation of migrating insects through a statistical method without measuring the position of the insects in the beam and then obtain the migratory biomass. Simple Summary: p53 isoforms have been reported in various tumor types. Both p53β and p53γ were recently reported to retain functionalities of full-length p53α. A role for p53 and p53 loss in cholesterol metabolism has also emerged. We show that SMG1, a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-related kinase, when inhibited in p53 wild-type MCF7 and HepG2 cells, significantly alters the expression of cholesterol pathway genes, with a net increase in intracellular cholesterol and an increased sensitivity to Fatostatin in MCF7. We confirm a prior report that SMG1 inhibition in MCF7 cells promotes expression of p53β and show the first evidence for increases in p53γ. Further, induced p53β expression, confirmed with antibody, explained the loss of SMG1 upregulation of the ABCA1 cholesterol exporter where p53γ had no effect on ABCA1. Additionally, upregulation of ABCA1 upon SMG1 knockdown was independent of upregulation of nonsense-mediated decay target RASSF1C, previously suggested to regulate ABCA1 via a "RASSF1C-miR33a-ABCA1" axis. SMG1, a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-related kinase (PIKK), essential in nonsense-mediated RNA decay (NMD), also regulates p53, including the alternative splicing of p53 isoforms reported to retain p53 functions. We confirm that SMG1 inhibition in MCF7 tumor cells induces p53β and show p53γ increase. Inhibiting SMG1, but not UPF1 (a core factor in NMD), upregulated several cholesterol pathway genes. SMG1 knockdown significantly increased ABCA1, a cholesterol efflux pump shown to be positively regulated by full-length p53 (p53α). An investigation of RASSF1C, an NMD target, increased following SMG1 inhibition and reported to inhibit miR-33a-5p, a canonical ABCA1-inhibiting miRNA, did not explain the ABCA1 results. ABCA1 upregulation following SMG1 knockdown was inhibited by p53β siRNA with greatest inhibition when p53α and p53β were jointly suppressed, while p53γ siRNA had no effect. In contrast, increased expression of MVD, a cholesterol synthesis gene upregulated in p53 deficient backgrounds, was sensitive to combined targeting of p53α and p53γ. Phenotypically, we observed increased intracellular cholesterol and enhanced sensitivity of MCF7 to growth inhibitory effects of cholesterol-lowering Fatostatin following SMG1 inhibition. Our results suggest deregulation of cholesterol pathway genes following SMG1 knockdown may involve alternative p53 programming, possibly resulting from differential effects of p53 isoforms on cholesterol gene expression. Polarization information can greatly improve the ability of detection, parameter retrieval, and classification for entomological radar. In recent, the instantaneous fully polarimetric measurement technique is used in entomological radar, so as to relax the restriction of invariant orientation during observation compared to the typical vertical-looking radar with linear-polarized rotation configuration. However, the fully polarimetric measurement is based on a multichannels’ radar system, and the imbalance and crosstalk between channels, namely, polarimetric errors, will severely affect the measurement of the polarimetric scattering matrix (PSM). Thus, polarimetric calibration is essential to obtain the accurate polarization information of targets. In contrast to inefficient and manual calibration methods, a data-driven polarimetric calibration method is proposed based on the assumption of reciprocity and bilateral symmetry of insects in this article. The polarimetric errors are elaborately decomposed into two components, which could be estimated by reciprocity and bilateral symmetry, respectively. In addition, because the proposed method is data-driven, the calibration process could be automatically executed to compensate for the temporal-variant polarimetric errors induced by temperature change and, thus, suitable for the long-term operation of entomological radar. Simulations and experiments are carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed calibration method. Results show that it could achieve high accuracy when the number of insects used as calibrators is large enough. The proposed method has been applied in Ku-band high-resolution fully polarimetric entomological radars for cross-border migratory insect observation in Yunnan province, China. Measuring migration flux with entomological radar is of great importance to assess the biomass of migratory insects and study the influence of insects on the ecosystem. However, the migration flux is measured with a large quantity of errors for the entomological radar without the ability of in-beam angle measurement, because the insect RCS is measured with the assumption that the insect flies over the beam center. When the insect does not pass through the beam center, the measured RCS is less than the true value. To improve the estimation accuracy of migration flux, a new estimation method of migration flux based on statistical hypothesis is proposed for radars working in the fixed-beam vertical-looking mode. This method avoids the RCS measurement error caused by the offset of the insect trajectory to the radar beam center by assuming that the insect flight trajectory is evenly distributed in the beam and calculating the average value of flux. This method is extended to be used in fixed-beam arbitrary pointing mode and a new proposed scanning mode. For entomological radar, the polarization information of the target is usually used to estimate the biological parameters, such as orientation, body length, and mass, of the insect. Thus, the accuracy of polarization measurement directly affects the performance of the biological parameters' estimation. The polarization measurement error is mainly caused by the imbalance of amplitude and phase between two polarization channels and the crosstalk of the dual-polarization antenna. In order to obtain the correct polarization information of the target, the polarimetric calibration of the entomological radar is required. This paper proposes a new polarimetric calibration technique based on antenna rotation, which does not require the calibrator to have a specific polarization scattering matrix (PSM). Compared with the currently existing calibration techniques, no prior knowledge of the calibrator PSM is required (in fact, any fixed-point target can be used as a calibrator); thus, the errors introduced by the mechanical process can be avoided. Simulations and data measured by radar verify the effectiveness of the method. This method has the potential to be extended to other fully polarimetric radar systems in the future, such as fully polarimetric weather radar, fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and so on. Process analytical technology (PAT) plays a crucial role in optimizing crystalline powder product qualities, improving process stability, and reducing experimental costs by enabling real-time monitoring and control of process variables during the crystallization process. In-situ process imaging and analysis have gained significant attention due to their capacity to provide abundant information through images, leading to remarkable advancements in image processing technology, particularly with the support of artificial intelligence. However, the performance suffers when processing high-density slurry images due to challenges such as defocusing, overlapping, background and crystal edges blurriness, and inconsistencies in crystal scales. To address these challenges and explore research strategies based on deep learning for segmenting and analyzing high slurry density images effectively, this study constructed a specific dataset that contains high-density slurry crystal images which is well-labeled, and introduced state-of-the-art neural networks including YOLOv8, U2-net, and Mask R-CNN combined with image and data enhancement strategies. Comparative analysis revealed that YOLOv8 outperformed Mask R-CNN and U2-net by capturing multi-dimensional information in high-density crystal slurry scenarios. Finally, based on the segmentation results of the practical taurine crystallization process using proposed strategy, 1D crystal size, aspect ratio along with 2D size distributions were extracted for further evaluation of crystallization kinetics and crystal properties accurately and quickly. Purpose: This study aimed to systematically present application situation and therapeutic effect of proton therapy (PT), heavy ion therapy, and helical tomotherapy (TOMO) for gastric cancer (GC), and to find gaps of existing studies. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Chinese Biological Medical Database were searched. Tables, bubble plot, and heat map were conducted to display results. Results: Fourteen studies were included. About PT, 7 single-arm studies showed median overall survival (OS) within 2–66 months and 1 study reported 40% of patients happened moderate degree of radiation gastritis. About TOMO, 1 study reported longer median OS and progression-free survival, lower occurrence of Grade III toxicity, and late toxicity compared to 3D-CRT, while another study remained neutral. About heavy ion therapy, there was no clinical study was found. Conclusions: Existing studies presented good clinic treatment effect about PT and TOMO for GC, and furthermore clinical studies are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the recent surge in scholarly attention to anti‐Asian racism, what is largely missing in this growing body of literature is a bridge connecting studies on this subject to the broader field of race and ethnicity studies. In this special issue, we propose to use the concept of transculturality, which is defined as the process of cultural interaction, interpenetration, and hybridization that transcends the traditional borders of individual cultures, to establish this connection. In this introductory article, we first critically review the concepts of culture, interculturality, and multiculturality in the studies of race and ethnicity. Upon this review, we explain how transculturality advances the knowledge of racial and ethnic identity, ideas, and practices. This introduction concludes with an overview of each contribution, setting the stage for a comprehensive exploration of this complex and multifaceted issue. Collectively, this special issue aims to not only provide theoretical and empirical insights into the transculturality of anti‐Asian racism but also build a bridge between the studies of the Asian diaspora and the general research on race and ethnicity. Loss Plateau of China is an area with long-term vegetation restoration while serious mass movements. Local vegetation does act as sediment reducing role while quantification of their effect on landslides is lacking. This work presents a first research work about the connection between landslides and vegetation by the example of July 25–26, 2013, extreme rainstorm. High-resolution sensing orthoimages, landside width, and simplified infinite slope theory were used to examine landslide distribution and the lateral apparent cohesion of roots. The results reveal that shallow landslides have a higher probability at the transitional slope area. The majority of them have a gradient of 20–25°, locate on south-facing slopes, and areas with sparse vegetation. Vegetation cover, represented by the Green-Red Vegetation Index (GRVI), is the controlling factor of landslide distribution and size. The estimated lateral apparent cohesion of plant roots is not positively related to GRVI, and increase when GRVI > 0.2. The relationship between landslide width and slope gradient indicates that strong root strength may result in larger landslide volume. This result of this work is a pioneering trial in correlating the lateral apparent cohesion from roots and forest crown, which is helpful for understanding the effect of vegetation on landslides. Inflammatory response caused by early weaning stress in piglets is associated with various diseases. The Hippophae rhamnoides polysaccharide (HRP) exhibits anti-inflammatory activity and immunomodulatory properties. The mechanisms for the protective effects of HRP on barrier function, inflammatory damage and apoptosis in intestinal porcine epithelial cells (IPEC-J2) induced by the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) are unknown. In this study, we first demonstrated the cytotoxicity of HRP-induced IPEC-J2 cells by reducing cell viability. IPEC-J2 cells were treated with 0–800 μg/mL doses of HRP, and 0–600 μg/mL doses were used in further experiments. Upon exposure to LPS, the viability of IPEC-J2 cells, ROS production, immunoglobulin levels (immunoglobulin M (IgM), immunoglobulin A (IgA) and immunoglobulin G (IgG)) and tight junction protein level (zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), occluding, claudin-1) decreased. Inflammatory factors (interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α)) and apoptosis (Bcl-2, Bax, caspase-3, caspase-8 and caspase-9) were increased. Cell morphology and internal structure were damaged in the LPS treatment. Pre-treating cells with HRP (0–600 μg/mL) reduced inflammatory factors levels, apoptosis rate, increased immunoglobulins, tight junction protein levels and relieved cell surface morphology damage. Pre-treatment with HRP also reduced the levels of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and Myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) and inhibited the phosphorylated NF-κB factor-kappa B (NF-κB) in cells induced by LPS. These results show that pre-treatment with HRP protected against LPS-induced IPEC-J2 cell damage through its anti-inflammatory activity. • HRP protected IPEC-J2 cells from LPS-induced inflammation damage and apoptosis. • HRP protected the barrier function integrity of IPEC-J2 cells induced by LPS. • HRP-inhibited LPS-induced inflammation is related to the TLR4/NF-κB pathway. The body of literature on underrepresentation and gender inequality is vast. However, despite its potential to perpetuate gender stereotypes, the overrepresentation of women in media has received inadequate attention. This study explores how traditional news media and social media overrepresent females as drivers when discussing traffic accidents, and whether social media could be the 'new equalizer' for gender. Focusing on China, we collected 97,120 posts from Weibo, China's largest microblogging site, and 11,290 newspaper articles dated between January 2010 and November 2018. We analyzed the data through a mixed-methods design and found that female drivers are overrepresented in discussions of traffic accidents, in both newspapers and on Weibo. While the gender bias against female drivers is more prevalent on Weibo than in newspapers, Weibo has provided a platform for gender-aware discussion. Purpose: This paper aims to propose the need for soft and flexible sensors that actually measure the turning angle and torque of a joint. Conventional rigid angular/torque sensors have compatibility issues in wearable applications due to its bulkiness, non-compliance and high rigidity. Design/methodology/approach: The sensing element of the sensor is based on carbon black (CB)/Ecoflex composite, deposited via extrusion printing technique. A simple finite element analysis was used to explain the non-linearity and non-symmetricity behaviours of the sensor. Findings: This prototype can measure the angular rotation up to ±180° and a maximum torque value of 0.6 Nm. The geometry of the printed CB/Ecoflex composite as piezoresistive trace has a significant effect on the output (resistance change) response. Originality/value: This research explored an extrusion printing techniques that allow customization to construct a soft piezoresistive strain sensor, which can be used as an angular/torque sensor. Hydroxyapatite, a mineral form of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) that gives bones their rigidity, is the major and essential component of bones and teeth in the human and animal body. A suitable ratio of Ca and P is vital for bone growth. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of dietary calcium to available phosphorus ratios (Ca/AP) on bone metabolism and osteoclast activity of the osteoprotegerin (OPG)/receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) signalling pathway in piglets. At days 15 and 29, the piglets were assessed for growth performance, blood indicators, cytokines and the OPG/RANK/RANKL signalling pathway. Our results showed that piglets fed a dietary Ca/AP ratio of 2:1 increases growth performance and regulates blood indicators and cytokines (parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin (CT), vitamin D3 (VD3), insulin‐like growth factor‐1 (IGF‐1), transforming growth factor‐β (TGF‐β), interleukin‐1 (IL‐1), interleukin‐6 (IL‐6), carboxyterminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PICP), tartrate‐resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin (OCN) content). We also demonstrated that this ratio affects hormone secretion and further bone metabolism through the OPG/RANK/RANKL signalling pathway of osteoclasts. These results indicate that a suitable dietary Ca/AP ratio is vital for bone growth and reduce the incidence of bone diseases such as osteoporosis, providing a practical basis for the raising of piglets. Abstract The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary flavonoids from Allium mongolicum Regel (AMRF) supplementation on growth, antioxidant and immune status, immune-related genes expression and disease resistance in Channa argus. A basal diet was supplemented with AMRF at 0, 10, 20 or 40 mg/kg feed for 56 days. The result revealed that weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) were significantly increased (P <.05) with the increase of dietary AMRF levels from 0 to 40 mg/kg. All AMRF-supplemented groups (10, 20 or 40 mg/kg) significantly enhanced (P <.05) serum AKP, lysozyme activity, C3, IgM concentration, liver antioxidant enzymes activity (SOD, CAT and GSH-Px) or decreased (P <.05) serum cortisol, liver MDA content, serum ALT and AST activity. Meanwhile, AMRF administration significantly up-regulated (P <.05) the expression of SOD, IgM, HSP70, HSP90, IκB-α and GR or down-regulated (P <.05) NF-κB p65 and inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-8) transcription in head kidney of C. argus. After challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila , survival rates in all AMRF treatment groups were significantly increased (P <.05). These results indicated that dietary intake containing AMRF enhanced growth, antioxidant and immune response and regulated immune-related genes expression and increased disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila in snakehead fish, with greatest effects in fish given 40 mg/kg AMRF for 56 days. Abstract Sorghum offers enormous potential as a feedstock for the production of fuels and chemicals from both water-extractable sugars and the cell wall biopolymers, while its within-plant structural and compositional heterogeneity may allow for physical fractionations to tailor feedstock properties to a biorefining process. In this study, the stem internodes of two sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) genotypes, a sweet sorghum ('Della') and a forage/energy sorghum ('TX08001'), were first subjected to fractionation by manual classification by stem anatomy and internode proximity to the ground to yield 18 fractions. These fractions exhibited substantial differences in cell wall morphology, composition, and recalcitrance to mild alkaline pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. While the sweet sorghum cultivar held nearly 70% more water-extractable sugar (sucrose, glucose, fructose, starch) in the stems than the forage/energy sorghum hybrid, both cultivars exhibited comparable diversity of composition and these compositions were remarkably similar in similar tissues and stem regions between the two cultivars. The fractions isolated from the pith parenchyma were the least recalcitrant to mild alkaline pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis and contained less lignin than fractions isolated from the epidermis, outer and inner rind, and internal vascular bundles. The pith samples isolated from the lowest region of the stem from both cultivars exhibited near-theoretical sugar hydrolysis yields when no pretreatment was employed and exhibited the lowest lignin contents of any of the fractions. Next, a physical fractionation approach approximating a commercial "de-pithing" process utilizing wet disintegration and sieving was applied to the forage/energy sorghum. A pith-rich fraction representing approximately 20% of the extractives-free mass of the stem could be isolated with this approach and, relative to the other fractions, was low in lignin, high in ash, highly hygroscopic, and showed an improved response to mild alkaline pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis at low enzyme loadings. Overall, these results demonstrate how heterogeneity within sorghum stems can be exploited using physical fractionation approaches to yield fractions enriched in desired properties that may allow for more streamlined processing. In this work, we explore the ability of several characterization approaches for phenotyping to extract information about plant cell wall properties in diverse maize genotypes with the goal of identifying approaches that could be used to predict the plant's response to deconstruction in a biomass-to-biofuel process. Specifically, a maize diversity panel was subjected to two high-throughput biomass characterization approaches, pyrolysis molecular beam mass spectrometry (py-MBMS) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, and chemometric models to predict a number of plant cell wall properties as well as enzymatic hydrolysis yields of glucose following either no pretreatment or with mild alkaline pretreatment. These were compared to multiple linear regression (MLR) models developed from quantified properties. We were able to demonstrate that direct correlations to specific mass spectrometry ions from pyrolysis as well as characteristic regions of the second derivative of the NIR spectrum regions were comparable in their predictive capability to partial least squares (PLS) models for p-coumarate content, while the direct correlation to the spectral data was superior to the PLS for Klason lignin content and guaiacyl monomer release by thioacidolysis as assessed by cross-validation. The PLS models for prediction of hydrolysis yields using either py-MBMS or NIR spectra were superior to MLR models based on quantified properties for unpretreated biomass. However, the PLS models using the two high-throughput characterization approaches could not predict hydrolysis following alkaline pretreatment while MLR models based on quantified properties could. This article compares American, British, and Chinese news coverage of Internet privacy policies. Specifically, we examine media discourse about the “real-name” policies established by Facebook and Weibo. We find that U.S. and UK news coverage of Internet privacy policy is broadly similar, when compared with the more authoritarian–corporatist media system in China. British and U.S. newspapers were much more independent from state control, and were able to maintain a more critical stance than the Chinese newspapers. But there were additional factors that shaped the patterns in news discourse in complicated ways, which are related to (a) the difference between domestic and international news genres, (b) specific narratives about national identity, and (c) more general discourses about civil society, democracy, and the public good. We suggest that the range of comparative media research can be extended by paying attention to how these cultural factors interact with media system dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Channa argus (C. argus), an important cultured freshwater species, is widely distributed in China, which possesses the characteristic of high disease resistance. However, the information on genomic and transcriptomic studies on disease resistance of this species is not available at present. To address the shortfall and to better understand snakehead immune response to pathogen infection at molecular level, the C. argus were challenged with potent Aeromonas veronii (A. veronii) for 24 h and the high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) technology was employed to produce transcriptomes from the liver. Firstly, the serum parameters were significantly changed after Aeromonas veronii infection for 24 h compared with the control group. Thus, an average of 326,557,262 clean reads obtained were de novo assembled into 157,766 unigenes with most of the unigenes between 201 and 500 bp. All of unigenes were annotated to six public databases (Nr, Swiss-Prot, COG, GO, KEGG, and Pfam). A total of 21,217 differentially expressed unigenes (DEGs) were identified. The 21,217 DEGs were significantly enriched in 16 pathways related to the immune or disease. Finally, the expression levels of six selected immune-related DEGs were scrutinized. Three genes encoding TNF-α, IL-1β, and Bcl2 were significantly upregulated, whereas the gene encoding MyD88, NOD-1, and NOD-2 was significantly downregulated. In summary, this study provides valuable transcriptome resource for understanding the defense mechanisms of C. argus in resistance to pathogens from the gene expression viewpoint, which also open up the possibility to study the immune complexity and to better comprehend the interrelationships between some immune pathways in C. argus. Uncertainty associated to the estimated values of the parameters in a model is a key piece of information for decision makers and model users. However, this information is typically not reported or the confidence intervals are too large to be useful. A semi-mechanistic model for the enzymatic saccharification of dilute acid pretreated corn stover is proposed in this work, the model is a modification of an existing one providing a statistically significant improved fit towards a set of experimental data that includes varying initial solid loadings (10–25% w/w) and the use of the pretreatment liquor and washed solids with or without supplementation of key inhibitors. A subset of 8 out of 17 parameters was identified, showing sufficiently tight confidence intervals to be used in uncertainty propagation and model analysis, without requiring interval truncation via expert judgment. Summary: Both p53 and Mdmx are ubiquitinated and degraded by the same E3 ligase Mdm2; interestingly, however, while p53 is rapidly degraded by Mdm2, Mdmx is a stable protein in most cancer cells. Thus, the mechanism by which Mdmx is degraded by Mdm2 needs further elucidation. Here, we identified the noncoding 5S rRNA as a major component of Mdmx-associated complexes from human cells. We show that 5S rRNA acts as a natural inhibitor of Mdmx degradation by Mdm2. RNAi-mediated knockdown of endogenous 5S rRNA, while not affecting p53 levels, significantly induces Mdmx degradation and, subsequently, activates p53-dependent growth arrest. Notably, 5S rRNA binds the RING domain of Mdmx and blocks its ubiquitination by Mdm2, whereas Mdm2-mediated p53 ubiquitination remains intact. These results provide insights into the differential effects on p53 and Mdmx by Mdm2 in vivo and reveal a critical role for noncoding 5S rRNA in modulating the p53-Mdmx axis. Lead is mostly found with zinc ores, but is also abundant in fossil fuels. However, the anthropogenic cycle of lead in fossil fuel system has rarely been reported. This study expounds on the evolution of lead metabolism in China's fossil fuel system from 1980 to 2018 through dynamic substance flow analysis. The quantities and structures of lead flows and stocks in the system changed significantly. After the prohibition of leaded gasoline, raw coal became the main source of lead in the system, reaching 101 kt Pb/yr in 2018. The lead outflow of the system underwent a transformation from gas phase to solid phase. The atmospheric lead emission dropped from the highest 20 kt/yr to 4 kt/yr. Most of the lead in the system accumulated in coal-based solid waste. In the past 40 years, 677 kt of lead accumulated in constructions due to the utilization of coal-based solid waste, and 657 kt of lead was left in the redundant coal-based solid waste. The main lead emission stage gradually shifted from the use stage to the waste management stage. Although the flow of lead in fossil fuels is small, there is no significant difference between unintentional (consider only fossil fuels) and intentional use of lead emissions to the atmosphere and landfills. Our previous study showed that ubiquitination of p53 is reversible and that the ubiquitin hydrolase HAUSP can stabilize p53 by deubiquitination. Here, we found that partial reduction of endogenous HAUSP levels by RNAi indeed destabilizes endogenous p53; surprisingly, however, nearly complete ablation of HAUSP stabilizes and activates p53. We further show that this phenomenon occurs because HAUSP stabilizes Mdm2 in a p53-independent manner, providing an interesting feedback loop in p53 regulation. Notably, HAUSP is required for Mdm2 stability in normal cells; in HAUSP-ablated cells, self-ubiquitinated-Mdm2 becomes extremely unstable, leading to indirect p53 activation. Furthermore, this feedback regulation is specific to Mdm2; in HeLa cells, where p53 is preferentially degraded by viral E6-dependent ubiquitination, depletion of HAUSP fails to activate p53. This study provides an example of an ubiquitin ligase (Mdm2) that is directly regulated by a deubiquitinase (HAUSP) and also reveals a dynamic role of HAUSP in the p53-Mdm2 pathway. p53 promotes tumor suppression through its ability to function as a transcriptional factor and is activated by posttranslational modifications that include acetylation. Our earlier study demonstrated that p53 acetylation can enhance its sequence-specific DNA binding in vitro, and this notion was later confirmed in several other studies. However, a recent study has reported that in vitro acetylation of p53 fails to stimulate its DNA binding to large DNA fragments, raising an important issue that requires further investigation. Here, we show that unacetylated p53 is able to bind weakly to its consensus site within the context of large DNA fragments, although it completely fails to bind the same site within short oligonucleotide probes. Strikingly, by using highly purified and fully acetylated p53 proteins obtained from cells, we show that acetylation of the C-terminal domain can dramatically enhance site-specific DNA binding on both short oligonucleotide probes and long DNA fragments. Moreover, endogenous p53 apparently can be fully acetylated in response to DNA damage when both histone deacetylase complex 1 (HDAC1)- and Sir2-mediated deacetylation are inhibited, indicating dynamic p53 acetylation and deacetylation events during the DNA damage response. Finally, we also show that acetylation of endogenous p53 indeed significantly augments its ability to bind an endogenous target gene and that p53 acetylation levels correlate well with p53-mediated transcriptional activation in vivo. Thus, our results clarify some of the confusion surrounding acetylation-mediated effects on p53 binding to DNA and suggest that acetylation of p53 in vivo may contribute, at least in part, to its transcriptional activation functions. Although Mdm2-mediated ubiquitination is essential for both degradation and nuclear export of p53, the molecular basis for the differential effects of Mdm2 remains unknown. Here we show that low levels of Mdm2 activity induce monoubiquitination and nuclear export of p53, whereas high levels promote p53's polyubiquitination and nuclear degradation. A p53-ubiquitin fusion protein that mimics monoubiquitinated p53 was found to accumulate in the cytoplasm in an MdmZ-independent manner, indicating that monoubiquitination is critical for p53 trafficking. These results clarify the nature of ubiquitination-mediated p53 regulation and suggest that distinct mechanisms regulate p53 function in accordance with the levels of Mdm2 activity. Nuclear localization of p53 is essential for its tumor suppressor function. Here, we have identified Parc, a Parkin-like ubiquitin ligase, as a cytoplasmic anchor protein in p53-associated protein complexes. Parc directly interacts and forms a ∼1 MDa complex with p53 in the cytoplasm of unstressed cells. In the absence of stress, inactivation of Parc induces nuclear localization of endogenous p53 and activates p53-dependent apoptosis. Overexpression of Parc promotes cytoplasmic sequestration of ectopic p53. Furthermore, abnormal cytoplasmic localization of p53 was observed in a number of neuroblastoma cell lines; RNAi-mediated reduction of endogenous Parc significantly sensitizes these neuroblastoma cells in the DNA damage response. The p53 tumour suppressor is a short-lived protein that is maintained at low levels in normal cells by Mdm2-mediated ubiquitination and subsequent proteolysis. Stabilization of p53 is crucial for its tumour suppressor function. However, the precise mechanism by which ubiquitinated p53 levels are regulated in vivo is not completely understood. By mass spectrometry of affinity-purified p53-associated factors, we have identified herpesvirus-associated ubiquitin-specific protease (HAUSP) as a novel p53-interacting protein. HAUSP strongly stabilizes p53 even in the presence of excess Mdm2, and also induces p53-dependent cell growth repression and apoptosis. Significantly, HAUSP has an intrinsic enzymatic activity that specifically deubiquitinates p53 both in vitro and in vivo. In contrast, expression of a catalytically inactive point mutant of HAUSP in cells increases the levels of p53 ubiquitination and destabilizes p53. These findings reveal an important mechanism by which p53 can be stabilized by direct deubiquitination and also imply that HAUSP might function as a tumour suppressor in vivo through the stabilization of p53. The current period of disruptive social change is inextricably bound up with new means and modes of communication, information, and media streams. The Communication, Information Technologies & Media Sociology section of the American Sociological Association (CITAMS) locates these factors at the center of our collective interests, investigating them through a plethora of methods, theories, and empirical cases. Each year, CITAMS runs a special issue in ICS showcasing select works presented at the previous year's American Sociological Association conference and the affiliated Media Sociology preconference. Papers in the 2022 CITAMS Special Issue reflect a social context defined by a prolonged global pandemic and wrought by democratic uncertainty. Across these social circumstances, technology and media loom large. Simultaneously, everyday life continues and classic CITAMS scholarship sustains relevance for the ways people interact, construct identity, consume, and mobilize. Deep-buried tunnels constructed through layered soft rocks undergo large deformation, which threatens their safety and leads to construction delay. When a soft rock tunnel is excavated below the water table, the rock mass will deteriorate due to the presence of groundwater, aggravating the large deformation issue. In this work, the Baozhen tunnel excavated in layered carbonaceous shale was taken as a case study to investigate the mechanical behavior and support countermeasures of deep-buried tunnels with a high geostress considering the effect of groundwater. First, laboratory tests were performed to study the groundwater effect on the mechanical properties of the shale. Subsequently, the geological and large deformation characteristics of selected study areas using the original support scheme were analyzed. Using the tested constitutive parameters combined with the field-monitored deformation, a UDEC numerical model was established to investigate the tunnel deformation behavior under different bedding angles, groundwater depths, and shear stresses. Finally, the optimized support scheme was verified through numerical and on-site monitoring results. The tunnel responses at three typical monitoring cross-sections, such as the deformation distribution and normal pressures acting on the primary support and secondary lining, were compared to investigate the effect of groundwater and the optimized support scheme on the tunnel responses. An asymmetric large deformation was induced by the combined action of the soft layered rock and shearing action under the effect of groundwater. The groundwater reduced the rock strength and increased the tunnel deformation, and it also strengthened the unsymmetrical loading effect, which was reflected in the distributions of the tunnel deformation and support pressures. As a countermeasure, asymmetrically arranged rockbolts could help reduce the full-ring tunnel deformation and support pressure by 50.3 % and 22 %, respectively, which could also alleviate the unsymmetrical loading effect, thus enhancing the synergistic performance of the support structures. Abstract Neoantigens are mutation-containing immunogenic peptides from tumor cells. Neoantigen intrinsic features are neoantigens' sequence-associated features characterized by different amino acid descriptors and physical–chemical properties, which have a crucial function in prioritization of neoantigens with immunogenic potentials and predicting patients with better survival. Different intrinsic features might have functions to varying degrees in evaluating neoantigens' potentials of immunogenicity. Identification and comparison of intrinsic features among neoantigens are particularly important for developing neoantigen-based personalized immunotherapy. However, there is still no public repository to host the intrinsic features of neoantigens. Therefore, we developed GNIFdb, a glioma neoantigen intrinsic feature database specifically designed for hosting, exploring and visualizing neoantigen and intrinsic features. The database provides a comprehensive repository of computationally predicted Human leukocyte antigen class I (HLA-I) restricted neoantigens and their intrinsic features; a systematic annotation of neoantigens including sequence, neoantigen-associated mutation, gene expression, glioma prognosis, HLA-I subtype and binding affinity between neoantigens and HLA-I; and a genome browser to visualize them in an interactive manner. The pursuit of an advanced functional coating that simultaneously combines high hardness, wear resistance, and superior electrical conductivity has remained an elusive goal in the field of copper alloy surface enhancement. Traditional solid solution alloying methods often lead to a significant increase in electron scattering, resulting in a notable reduction in electrical conductivity, making it challenging to achieve a balance between high hardness, wear resistance, and high conductivity. The key lies in identifying a suitable microstructure where dislocation motion is effectively hindered while minimizing the scattering of conductive electrons. In this study, a novel Cu-MoSi2 coating was successfully fabricated on a CuCrZr alloy surface using the coaxial powder feeding high-speed laser cladding technique, with the addition of 10–30% MoSi2 particles. The coating significantly enhances the hardness and wear resistance of the copper substrate while maintaining favorable electrical conductivity. As the quantity of MoSi2 particles increases, the coating's hardness and wear resistance gradually improve, with minimal variance in conductivity. Among the coatings, the Cu-30%MoSi2 coating stands out with the highest hardness (974.5 HV0.5) and the lowest wear amount (0.062 mg/km), approximately 15 times the hardness of the copper base material (65 HV0.5) and only 0.45% of the wear amount (13.71 mg/km). Additionally, the coating exhibits a resistivity of 0.173 × 10−6 Ω·m. The extraordinary hardness and wear resistance of these coatings can be attributed to the dispersion strengthening effect of MoxSiy particles, while the high electrical conductivity is due to the low silicon content dissolved into the copper from the released MoSi2 particles, as well as the rapid cooling rates associated with the high-speed laser cladding process. Background: Network meta-analyses using individual participant data (IPD-NMAs) have been increasingly used to compare the effects of multiple interventions. Although there have been many studies on statistical methods for IPD-NMAs, it is unclear whether there are statistical defects in published IPD-NMAs and whether the reporting of statistical analyses has improved. This study aimed to investigate statistical methods used and assess the reporting and methodological quality of IPD-NMAs.Methods: We searched four bibliographic databases to identify published IPD-NMAs. The methodological quality was assessed using AMSTAR-2 and reporting quality assessed based on PRISMA-IPD and PRISMA-NMA. We performed stratified analyses and correlation analyses to explore the factors that might affect quality.Results: We identified 21 IPD-NMAs. Only 23.8% of the included IPD-NMAs reported statistical techniques used for missing participant data, 42.9% assessed the consistency, and none assessed the transitivity. None of the included IPD-NMAs reported sources of funding for trials included, only 9.5% stated pre-registration of protocols, and 28.6% assessed the risk of bias in individual studies. For reporting quality, compliance rates were lower than 50.0% for more than half of the items. Less than 15.0% of the IPD-NMAs reported data integrity, presented the network geometry, or clarified risk of bias across studies. IPD-NMAs with statistical or epidemiological authors often better assessed the inconsistency (P = 0.017). IPD-NMAs with a priori protocol were associated with higher reporting quality in terms of search (P = 0.046), data collection process (P = 0.031), and syntheses of results (P = 0.006).Conclusions: The reporting of statistical methods and compliance rates of methodological and reporting items of IPD-NMAs were suboptimal. Large deformation is a crucial factor in deep-buried tunnels constructed through soft rocks with a high geostress. Taking the deep-buried Baozhen tunnel through layered shale as an example, this study investigated its large deformation characteristics and the support countermeasures. Two study sections located in horizontally bedded carbonaceous shale and inclined bedded arenaceous shale were considered. First, the large deformation characteristics of normal sections were explored. Subsequently, a series of laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical properties and failure behavior of the shales in these sections. Based on the tested constitutive parameters considering the contact properties, the feasibility of optimization schemes related to the two sections was verified using the UDEC numerical software. Finally, the field monitoring results from the test sections, including the tunnel convergence, deep deformation, surrounding rock pressure and normal pressure on the secondary lining, were presented to further investigate the control effects of the optimization schemes. Both the numerical simulation and field monitoring results showed that the asymmetrically large deformation of the Baozhen tunnel could be attributed to the combined effect of the layered soft rock and the shear stress under high geostress. The invert rockbolts not only prevented the invert arch from heaving, but also helped reduce the global convergence of the tunnel. Tunneling through inclined bedded rocks was associated with a significant unsymmetrical-loading effect, and an asymmetric arrangement of the rockbolts could effectively deal with this issue; thus, the normal pressures acting on the surface of the support structures were more uniformly distributed. A cold spray–laser cladding composite gradient coating (CLGC) was successfully formed on a Cu substrate. In comparison with traditional laser cladding gradient coatings (LGC), cold spraying the pre-set Ni-Cu alloy's intermediate transition layer not only mitigates the negative impacts due to the high reflectivity of the copper substrate but also helps to minimize the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between the substrate and coating. This reduces the overall crack sensitivity and improves the cladding quality of the coating. Besides this, the uniform distribution of hard phases in CLGC, such as Ni11Si12 and Mo5Si3, greatly increases its microhardness compared to the Cu substrate, thus resulting in the value of 478.8 HV0.5 being approximately 8 times that of the Cu substrate. The friction coefficient of CLGC is lowered compared to both the Cu substrate and LGC with respective values of 0.28, 0.54, and 0.43, and its wear rate is only one-third of the Cu substrate's. These results suggest CLGC has excellent anti-wear properties. In addition, the wear mechanism was determined from the microscopic morphology and element distribution and was found to be oxidative and abrasive. This approach combines cold spraying and laser cladding to form a nickel-based gradient coating on a Cu substrate without cracks, holes, or other faults, thus improving the wear resistance of the Cu substrate and improving its usability. The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been steadily increasing, and it has become one of the most prevalent chronic liver diseases worldwide. Recent studies have shown that dihydromyricetin (DHM) is influential in treating NAFLD. The purpose of this review was to describe how DHM prevents and treats NAFLD and its potential mechanisms through an in-depth summary of preclinical in vitro and in vivo studies. A brief overview of DHM's potential role in NAFLD involves regulation of lipid/glucose metabolism, possibly via anti-inflammatory or sirtuin-dependent mechanisms. For NAFLD, there is currently no effective and approved medication for therapy. DHM has the characteristics of liver protection, antioxidation, anti-inflammatory and apoptosis-regulatory benefits, which provides a new idea for the treatment of NAFLD. With the increasing interest in utilizing natural products to prevent and control liver diseases, our work aims to provide new ideas for the treatment of NAFLD and accelerate its translation from bench to bedside. [Display omitted] • A novel Bi doped TiO 2 /C nanofibers (TiO 2 -Bi/CNFs) nanofibers are prepared. • The electrode exhibits the excellent stability of TiO 2 and the high capacity of Bi. Novel Bi-doped TiO 2 /C nanofibers (TiO 2 -Bi/CNFs) were fabricated using electrospinning combined with a consequent thermal treatment. When used as an active anode material for sodium-ion batteries (NIBs), interaction of Bi nanoparticles with TiO 2 incorporated into the carbon nanofibers stabilize the electrochemical performance of the material. Additionally, TiO 2 -Bi/CNF-based composite demonstrated high capacity and enhanced Na+ diffusion. As a result, NIB with TiO 2 -Bi/CNF-based anode displayed reversible capacity equal to 276 and 145.9 mAh g-1 after 200 and 3000 cycles at 100 and 1000 mA g−1 current densities, respectively. Even at 2000 mA g−1 current density, the battery with a TiO 2 -Bi/CNF-based anode delivered 84.5 mAh g-1 capacity retention after 10,000 cycles. Such excellent performance makes TiO 2 -Bi/CNFs a very promising active anode material for NIBs to advance large-scale energy storage applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rainfall-induced shallow landslides and debris flows are one of the most common erosion process and primary channel initiation mechanisms in many steep landscapes. Their initiation conditions are physically controlled by the soil properties and topographically influenced by the competition between area- (A) and slope-dependent (S) sediment transport process. In this work, the A-S relationship of landslides in two forests was compared with respect to the physical properties of soil and plant roots. The results reveal that landslides in the Pinus tabuleaformis forest commonly have larger surface- and contributing area, deeper failure plane and gentler slope gradient than those in the Larix Kaemphferi forest. The saturated hydraulic conductivity in the Pinus tabuleaformis forest is higher and strongly correlates to plant root biomass. The effective cohesion and inner frictional angle of soil mass in the two forests are similar. Faster saturated hydraulic conductivity may lead to the higher upslope contributing area of landslides in the the Pinus tabuleaformis forest. A combination of finite-slope model and precipitation interception model reveals that landslides in the Pinus tabuleaformis forest require higher rainfall amount that those in the Larix Kaemphferi forest. Last but not least, this work provides a clue that strong root network and high saturated hydraulic conductivity may promote the A-S condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a robust parametric model of a brushless permanent magnet machine with fractional-slot concentrated windings, which was developed for automated design optimization is presented. A computationally efficient finite-element analysis method was employed to estimate the dq-axes inductances, the induced voltage and torque ripple waveforms, and losses of the machine. A method for minimum effort calculation of the torque angle corresponding to the maximum torque per ampere load condition was developed. A differential evolution algorithm was implemented for the global design optimization with two concurrent objectives of minimum losses and minimum material cost. An engineering decision process based on the Pareto-optimal front for 3,500 candidate designs is presented together with discussions on the tradeoffs between cost and performance. Nb alloy has become a promising material in aerospace due to high melting point, low density and excellent processing properties. Nevertheless, the mismatched mechanical properties and thermal stability of single-phase BCC-Nb made the aircraft unable to resist cyclic vibration loads under the action of heat/force/flow. Here, after solid solution, quenching and two-stage aging, an FCC/BCC dual-phase Nb alloy with a discontinuous grain boundary (GB) carbide network skeleton was formed. The results show that interstitial C atoms precipitate from BCC-Nb matrix resulting in volume shrinkage and form discontinuous carbide at GB, which stimulates the phase transition of BCC expansion to FCC near GB. Wherein, discontinuous GB carbides help pin the GB and dislocations, impede grain growth, and change the deformation from local to the entire network skeleton. Meanwhile, the gap provides a channel for the dislocation to pass through the GB. Additionally, the FCC provides the multi-slip system to transfer the dislocation. The results show that the yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, fracture toughness and elastic modulus of Nb alloy are increased by 79.99 %, 34.52 %, 164.22 %, 204.76 % and 1.27 %, respectively. Herpesvirus-associated ubiquitin-specific protease (HAUSP, also known as USP7), a deubiquitylating enzyme of the ubiquitin-specific processing protease family, specifically deubiquitylates both p53 and MDM2, hence playing an important yet enigmatic role in the p53-MDM2 pathway. Here we demonstrate that both p53 and MDM2 specifically recognize the N-terminal tumor necrosis factor-receptor associated factor (TRAF)-like domain of HAUSP in a mutually exclusive manner. HAUSP preferentially forms a stable HAUSP-MDM2 complex even in the presence of excess p53. The HAUSP-binding elements were mapped to a peptide fragment in the carboxy-terminus of p53 and to a short-peptide region preceding the acidic domain of MDM2. The crystal structures of the HAUSP TRAF-like domain in complex with p53 and MDM2 peptides, determined at 2.3-Å and 1.7-Å resolutions, respectively, reveal that the MDM2 peptide recognizes the same surface groove in HAUSP as that recognized by p53 but mediates more extensive interactions. Structural comparison led to the identification of a consensus peptide-recognition sequence by HAUSP. These results, together with the structure of a combined substrate-binding-and-deubiquitylation domain of HAUSP, provide important insights into regulation of the p53-MDM2 pathway by HAUSP. Repression of gene transcription is mediated by histone deacetylases containing repressor–co-repressor complexes, which are recruited to promoters of target genes via interactions with sequence-specific transcription factors. The mammalian Sin3A co-repressor complex contains a core of at least seven proteins including the pRb-interacting protein RBP1 and a putative tumor suppressor p33ING1b. By biochemical purification and mass spectrometry, we have identified a novel component p40 from this complex. p40 bears homology to both yeast Sds3, a component of yeast histone deacetylase complexes, and its mammalian homologue mSds3. The p40-associated complex purified from human cells shows a strong histone deacetylase activity. When tethered to a Gal-DNA binding domain, the Gal-p40 is able to significantly repress transcription of a Gal-luciferase promoter. Interestingly, database analysis reveals that p40 is also highly homologous to BRMS1, a breast carcinoma metastasis suppressor, and overexpression of p40 in human cells can significantly inhibit cell growth. Thus, our data indicate that p40 may be critically involved in transcription repression of cell growth-associated gene expression by recruiting the HDAC1 deacetylase complex. The ubiquitin-specific processing protease (UBP) family of deubiquitinating enzymes plays an essential role in numerous cellular processes. HAUSP, a representative UBP, specifically deubiquitinates and hence stabilizes the tumor suppressor protein p53. Here, we report the crystal structures of the 40 kDa catalytic core domain of HAUSP in isolation and in complex with ubiquitin aldehyde. These studies reveal that the UBP deubiquitinating enzymes exhibit a conserved three-domain architecture, comprising Fingers, Palm, and Thumb. The leaving ubiquitin moiety is specifically coordinated by the Fingers, with its C terminus placed in the active site between the Palm and the Thumb. Binding by ubiquitin aldehyde induces a drastic conformational change in the active site that realigns the catalytic triad residues for catalysis. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Each year the Communication, Information Technologies, and Media Sociology section of the American Sociological Association curates a special issue highlighting sociological contributions to technology and media studies. That tradition continued in 2020, even as everything else changed. The articles included in this year's special issue were mostly written pre-Pandemic, yet their implications seem amplified by the current historical moment. With a globe gone remote, mediated communication rose from a specialist academic subject to an acute social consideration, intersecting with and illuminating basic sociological concerns about inequality, the nature of work, family life, and the compounding effects of race, class, gender, and sexuality as they interplay with social and material conditions. These topics are all reflected in the articles from this year's issue, now inflected with a post-Pandemic reality that shows insights from CITAMS are needed now, more than ever. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
