Treatment of stage IV esophageal cancer is traditionally palliative, but treatment response is usually poor. The role of surgery in the treatment of advanced esophageal cancer remains controversial. We sought to determine whether surgical treatment followed by neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy might provide survival benefits for these patients. A retrospective review of 163 esophageal cancer patients with M1 disease (distant organ metastasis) treated at a tertiary medical center hospital was performed from April 2002 to June 2021. Patient demographics and cancer staging, treatment, and disease recurrence, and time of follow up were included for analysis. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed for overall survival and progression-free survival analysis. Propensity score matching based on patient age and tumor staging characteristics was also performed for analysis. 124 patients were treated by CCRT alone and 39 treated by CCRT plus surgery. 3-year and 5-year progression free survival was 17.7% and 8.9% for CCRT+surgery group vs 0.8% and 0.0% in CCRT only group. (p = 0.019) 3- and 5-year survival was 24.0% and 12.0% in CCRT plus surgery group compared to 2.8% and 1.4% for CCRT only group (p = 0.009). Propensity matching of 39 CCRT plus surgery patients and 78 CCRT-only patients showed similar results (17.5% & 8.5% PFS vs 1.3% & 0.0% for PFS, 24.0% and 12.0% vs 3.9% and 1.9% OS). Surgical resection following CCRT treatment may improve progression-free survival and overall survival for selected patients of esophageal cancer with M1 disease. Surgical indication should be judicious, and further follow up studies should be performed.

Previous studies on spoken word production have shown that native English speakers used phoneme-sized units (e.g., a word-initial phoneme, C) to produce English words, and native Mandarin Chinese speakers employed syllable-sized units (e.g., a word-initial consonant and vowel, CV) as phonological encoding units in Chinese. With spoken word production, although spoken word recognition is a fundamental language skill of human beings, it is unknown whether a Chinese-English bilingual listener can adjust the phonological unit sizes depending on the language used. Using four mouse-tracking spoken word recognition experiments, participants listened to spoken words (either presented in English or Chinese) while viewing a display of two written words. In Experiment 1, Chinese-English bilinguals experienced a larger phonological competition in the CV condition than the control condition, indicating that they recruited syllables when listening to Chinese monosyllabic words. Experiment 2 extended the results of Experiment 1 with a set of Chinese disyllabic words and further revealed the temporal distribution of syllable overlap of a spoken word constrains phonological competition. In Experiment 3, Chinese-English bilinguals exhibited a greater phonological competition in both CV and C conditions that mirrored those reported with English monolinguals in Experiment 4. Our results across experiments demonstrated that Chinese-English bilinguals employed both phonemes and syllables to recognize English spoken words but exclusively relied on syllables to recognize Chinese words, suggesting that there is flexibility in selecting phonological units when recognizing spoken words in the two languages. Multilinguals who live in their native multilingual communities are constantly switching between languages, whereas those who live in monolingual communities need to constrain their code-switching. Malaysia is a multilingual country in which people mix languages on a daily basis, whereas, in Taiwan, Mandarin is predominately used and people are more cautious about code-switching. Therefore, in the current study, we investigated what factors might facilitate Malaysian-Chinese students to reduce the unintentional switching between languages to adapt to the language environment in Taiwan. Malaysian-Chinese who live in Malaysia (MIM) and Taiwan (MIT) were recruited to investigate whether and how non-linguistic code-switching and their awareness of language environment (ALE) influence their intentional and unintentional code-switching experiences. Participants' non-verbal code-switching was measured by a color/shape switching task, whereas ALE and code-switching experiences were measured by questionnaires. The multiple regression analyses of MIT's responses showed that the moderation of non-linguistic switch cost and ALE significantly predicted MIT's unintentional code-switching. Moreover, the simple slope analysis showed that MIT with high executive control have a dynamic unintentional switch in which the higher level of ALE is associated with lower unintentional switch. However, MIT with low executive control have a static unintentional switch, uninfluenced by their level of ALE. These results suggested that multilinguals' executive control along with their awareness of the language environment help them adapt to living in a community with a predominant language. A Malásia é um país multilíngue onde as pessoas misturam os idiomas diariamente; já em Taiwan, o mandarim é predominantemente usado e as pessoas são mais cautelosas com a alternância entre línguas. Considerando-se essa diferença, no presente estudo, investigamos quais fatores podem auxiliar os estudantes malaios-chineses a reduzir a troca não intencional entre idiomas para se adaptar ao ambiente linguístico de Taiwan. Estudantes malaios-chineses que vivem na Malásia (MNM) e em Taiwan (MET) foram testados para compreender de que forma a troca não linguística e a consciência do ambiente linguístico (CAL) influenciam suas experiências de troca de código linguístico intencionais e não intencionais. A troca de código não verbal dos participantes foi mensurada por uma tarefa de troca de cor/forma, enquanto as experiências de CAL e de troca de código linguística foram medidas por questionários. As análises de regressão múltipla das respostas do grupo MET mostraram que tanto o custo de troca não linguística quanto a CAL foram preditores significativos da troca de código linguística não intencional. Além disso, a análise mostrou que os indivíduos do grupo MET com alto controle executivo tiveram uma troca não intencional dinâmica em que participantes com alto nível de CAL tiveram menores índices de troca não intencional. No entanto, indivíduos do grupo MET com baixo controle executivo tiveram uma troca não intencional mais estática, não influenciada pelo seu nível de CAL. Esses resultados sugeriram que o controle executivo dos multilíngues, juntamente com sua consciência do ambiente linguístico, os ajudam a se adaptar a uma comunidade que tem um idioma predominante em que a troca de código linguístico é reduzida.

The spatial and angular organization of biological macromolecules is a key determinant, as well as informative readout, of their function. Correlative imaging of the dynamic spatio-angular architecture of cells and organelles is valuable, but remains challenging with current methods. Correlative imaging of spatio-angular dynamics requires fast polarization-, depth-, and wavelength-diverse measurement of intrinsic optical properties and fluorescent labels. We report a multimodal instant polarization microscope (miPolScope) that combines a broadband polarization-resolved detector, automation, and reconstruction algorithms to enable label-free imaging of phase, retardance, and orientation, multiplexed with fluorescence imaging of concentration, anisotropy, and orientation of molecules at diffraction-limited resolution and high speed. miPolScope enabled multimodal imaging of myofibril architecture and contractile activity of beating cardiomyocytes, cell and organelle architecture of live HEK293T and U2OS cells, and density and anisotropy of white and grey matter of mouse brain tissue across the visible spectrum. We anticipate these developments in joint quantitative imaging of density and anisotropy to enable new studies in tissue pathology, mechanobiology, and imaging-based screens.

The cell’s shape and motion represent fundamental aspects of the cell identity, and can be highly predictive of the function and pathology. However, automated analysis of the morphodynamic states remains challenging for most cell types, especially primary human cells where genetic labeling may not be feasible. To enable automated and quantitative analysis of morphodynamic states, we developed DynaMorph – a computational framework that combines quantitative live cell imaging with self-supervised learning. To demonstrate the fidelity and robustness of this approach, we used DynaMorph to annotate morphodynamic states observed with label-free measurements of density and anisotropy of live microglia isolated from human brain tissue. These cells show complex behavior and have varied responses to disease-relevant stimuli. DynaMorph generates quantitative morphodynamic representations that can be used to evaluate the effects of disease-relevant perturbations. Using DynaMorph, we identify distinct morphodynamic states of microglia polarization and detect rare transition events between states. The methodologies presented here can facilitate automated discovery of functional states of diverse cellular systems.

Biological function depends on the spatio-angular architecture of macromolecules - for example, functions of lipid membrane and cytoskeletal polymers arise from both the spatial and the angular organization of the constituent molecules. Low life goal and autobiographical memory specificities are associated with negative psychological symptoms. Short-term mindfulness trainings can increase life goal and autobiographical memory specificities. The present study extends the literature by investigating whether trait mindfulness is associated with life goal and autobiographical memory specificities. Additionally, because mindfulness trainings improve working memory capacity, which is associated with future episodic specificity and autobiographical memory retrieval, a second aim of this study was to examine whether working memory capacity moderates the relationship between trait mindfulness and life goal and autobiographical memory specificities. 96 participants completed the Freiburg Mindfulness Inventory, Automated Operational Span task, minimal instructions Autobiographical Memory Test, and Measure to Elicit Positive Future Goals and Plans. A multiple regression analysis revealed that the presence aspect of trait mindfulness and the interaction of the acceptance aspect of trait mindfulness and working memory capacity were predictive for goal specificity. A follow-up simple slope analysis revealed that high acceptance aspect of mindfulness was associated with low goal specificity in participants with a high working memory capacity. However, this association was not present in participants with medium and low working memory capacity. Neither trait mindfulness nor working memory capacity were associated with autobiographical memory specificity. Findings suggest that present-moment awareness enables one to focus on accessing event-specific knowledge, and that an accepting attitude alone cannot help people with high working memory capacity to make more concrete and specific future plans. The lack of association between trait mindfulness and autobiographical memory specificity might be attributed to low specific memories found in this study.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) mediated by aberrant immune responses. The current immune modulatory therapies are unable to protect and repair the brain damage caused by the immune attack. One of the therapeutic targets for MS is the sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) pathways, which signals via sphingosine-1-phosphate receptors 1-5 (S1P1-5), in the CNS and immune cells. In light of the potential neuro-protective properties of S1P signaling, we utilized the S1P1-GFP (Green fluorescent protein) reporter mice in the cuprizone-induced-demyelination model, to investigate the in vivo S1P- S1P1 signaling in the CNS. We observed S1P1 signaling in a subset of neural stem cells in the subventricular zone (SVZ) during demyelination. Additionally, oligodendrocyte progenitor cells in the SVZ and mature oligodendrocytes in the medial corpus callosum (MCC) expressed S1P1 signaling during remyelination. We did not observe S1P1 signaling in neurons and astrocytes in the cuprizone model. This approach was unable to determine S1P1-GFP signaling in the myeloid cells because of their aberrant GFP expression in GFP reporter mice. Significant S1P1 signaling was observed in lymphocytes during demyelination and inflammation. Our findings reveal β-arrestin dependent S1P1 signaling in oligodendrocyte lineage cells, indicating a role of S1P1 signaling during remyelination.

Background Angiogenesis assessment is important for personalized therapeutic intervention in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study investigated whether radiologic parameters obtained by dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-integrated magnetic resonance-positron emission tomography (MR-PET) could be used to quantitatively assess tumor angiogenesis in NSCLC. Methods This prospective cohort study included 75 patients with NSCLC who underwent DCE-integrated MR-PET at diagnosis. The following parameters were analyzed: metabolic tumor volume (MTV), maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), reverse reflux rate constant (kep), volume transfer constant (Ktrans), blood plasma volume fraction (vp), extracellular extravascular volume fraction (ve), apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and initial area under the time-to-signal intensity curve at 60 s post enhancement (iAUC60). Serum biomarkers of tumor angiogenesis, including vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A), angiogenin, and angiopoietin-1, were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays simultaneously. Results Serum VEGF-A (p = 0.002), angiogenin (p = 0.023), and Ang-1 (p Ktrans, and kep, showed strong linear correlations (p p = 0.004), MTV values (p kep values (p = 0.029) were significantly higher in patients with advanced-stage disease (stage III or IV) than in those with early-stage disease (stage I or II). Patients with initial higher values of angiogenesis-related MR-PET parameters, including MTV > 30 cm3 (p = 0.046), Ktrans > 200 10− 3/min (p = 0.069), and kep > 900 10− 3/min (p = 0.048), may have benefited from angiogenesis inhibitor therapy, which thus led to significantly longer overall survival. Conclusions The present findings suggest that DCE-integrated MR-PET provides a reliable, non-invasive, quantitative assessment of tumor angiogenesis; can guide the use of angiogenesis inhibitors toward longer survival; and will play an important role in the personalized treatment of NSCLC.

We present a label-free computational microscopy method, uPTI, which reports components of uniaxial permittivity tensor, including phase and 3D anisotropy across volumes. We report data from mouse brain tissue to demonstrate how uPTI enables discovery of intrinsic biological architecture.

Biological architecture is intrinsically tensorial. The permittivity tensor (PT) of biological material reports the density, angular anisotropy, symmetry, and 3D orientation of biomolecules. High-resolution measurement of PT can enable quantitative and label-free analysis of organelle, cell, and tissue architecture, but remains challenging. We report uniaxial permittivity tensor imaging (uPTI), a label-free computational imaging method for volumetric measurement of PT with diffraction-limited resolution. uPTI encodes the components of PT into intensity modulations using oblique illumination and polarization-resolved imaging. The high-dimensional data is decoded with a vectorial image formation model and a multi-channel convex optimization, assuming that the molecular distribution in each voxel has uniaxial symmetry. We describe a modular implementation of uPTI that can be multiplexed with complementary imaging modalities. We report volumes of uPT in mouse brain tissue, SARS-CoV-2 infected cardiomyocytes, RSV infected A549 cells, H&E stained tissue sections, isotropic beads, and anisotropic glass targets. uPTI enabled volumetric imaging of the 3D orientation and symmetry of organelles, cells, and tissue components with higher spatio-angular resolution than current vectorial tomography, ptychography, and light-field microscopy methods. We provide an open source implementation of the image formation model and reconstruction algorithms.

Mindfulness-based interventions are known to increase false memory. However, high trait mindfulness is associated with an external encoding style and field independence, which in turn are associated with low false memory. The present study used a bilingual context to disentangle these contrasting findings. Sixty Chinese-English bilinguals completed a Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) false recognition task and were evaluated using the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). Results showed negative and positive correlations between trait mindfulness and false recognition in Chinese-Chinese and Chinese-English conditions, respectively. The polar directions of the observed correlations suggest that trait mindfulness is associated with direct and analytical perception of objects and with cognitive flexibility in activating semantic information. The former improves source monitoring, whereas the latter increases the likelihood of generating false memories in the DRM paradigm.

Architectural order across spatial and temporal scales is a defining characteristic of living systems. Polarization of light enables label-free imaging of sub-resolution order in diverse biological systems without perturbing their assembly dynamics or causing phototoxicity. However, identification of specific structures seen in these images has remained challenging. We report synergistic use of polarized light microscopy, reconstruction of complementary optical properties, and deep neural networks to identify ordered structures. We recover birefringence, orientation, brightfield, and degree of polarization contrasts simultaneously by using Stokes formalism to model image formation. We report computationally efficient U-Net architectures that exploit information in complementary contrasts and predict specific structures with high accuracy. We illustrate the performance of our models by predicting ordered F-actin and condensed DNA in morphological diverse components of a kidney tissue. Our open-source python software for reconstruction of optical properties and training the neural networks is available on GitHub.

Phase imaging provides quantitative structural data about biological samples as an alternative or complementary contrast method to the functional information given by fluorescence imaging. In certain cases, fluorescence imaging is undesirable because it may harm the development of living cells or add time and complexity to imaging pipelines. However, current 3D phase reconstruction methods, such as optical diffraction tomography [1], are often limited to a single-scattering approximation. This limits the amount of scattering that such 3D reconstruction algorithms can successfully handle, and therefore effectively limits the sample thickness that can be successfully reconstructed. More recent methods such as 3D Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) have used intensity-only images combined with multiple-scattering models in order to reconstruct 3D volumes [2]. In practice, however, continuous biological samples on the order of 100 um thick are not well-reconstructed by 3D FPM, due to a lack of diverse information across the volume which creates an ill-posed inverse problem. To mitigate this, we introduce simultaneous detection coding in the form of pupil control to the 3D FPM capture scheme. Simple pupil coding schemes enabled us to capture diverse information across our volume. In concert with a beam propagation model that takes into account multiple scattering, this combination of illumination- and detection-side coding allows us to more stably reconstruct 3D phase for larger-scale biological samples. Microscope lenses can have either large field of view (FOV) or high resolution, not both. Computational microscopy based on illumination coding circumvents this limit by fusing images from different illumination angles using nonlinear optimization algorithms. The result is a Gigapixel-scale image having both wide FOV and high resolution. We demonstrate an experimentally robust reconstruction algorithm based on a 2nd order quasi-Newton's method, combined with a novel phase initialization scheme. To further extend the Gigapixel imaging capability to 3D, we develop a reconstruction method to process the 4D light field measurements from sequential illumination scanning. The algorithm is based on a ‘multi-slice’ forward model that incorporates both 3D phase and diffraction effects, as well as multiple forward scatterings. To solve the inverse problem, an iterative update procedure that combines both phase retrieval and ‘error back-propagation’ is developed. To avoid local minimum solutions, we further develop a novel physical model-based initialization technique that accounts for both the geometric-optic and 1st order phase effects. The result is robust reconstructions of Gigapixel 3D phase images having both wide FOV and super resolution in all three dimensions. Experimental results from an LED array microscope were demonstrated.

We demonstrate resolution enhancement in 3D by structured illumination microscopy (SIM) with unknown illumination patterns. Our algorithmic self-calibration algorithm recovers both the image and the patterns, given a statistical prior.

We propose an iterative Total-variation (TV) regularized reconstruction method for inverse problem of Fourier Ptychography with coded illumination. Our simulated and experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the new model.

A tunable metasurface composed of multiple resonant units is proposed, with each unit containing a block of SrTiO3 ferroelectric and a periodical copper-wire structure. The local transmission coe-cient of the metasurface can be controlled by tuning the permittivity of SrTiO3 via a bias voltage. A tunable metasurface is simulated to steer the beam direction at the angles of 30 - and 14:47 - , respectively. Another one is simulated to focus the wave beam at the focal lengths of 2‚0 and 4‚0, respectively.

The characteristics of periodic multilayered near-fleld superlenses are analyzed and optimized, using the dispersion relation derived from an efiective medium theory and the transfer function in the spectral domain. The k 0 -kx and k 00 -kx contours are used to explain and predict the spectral width, amplitude and phase of the transfer function. Superlenses containing CsBr or active layers are proposed to reduce image distortion or to compensate for the propagation loss, respectively. The parameters of the superlenses can be optimized by simulations to resolve half-pitch features down to ‚=36 using CsBr layers, and ‚=20 using active layers.

High-content biological microscopy targets high-resolution imaging across large fields-of-view, often achieved by computational imaging approaches. Previously, we demonstrated 2D multimodal high-content microscopy via structured illumination microscopy (SIM) with resolution [Formula: see text] the diffraction limit, using speckle illumination from Scotch tape. In this work, we extend the method to 3D by leveraging the fact that the speckle illumination is in fact a 3D structured pattern. We use both a coherent and an incoherent imaging model to develop algorithms for joint retrieval of the 3D super-resolved fluorescent and complex-field distributions of the sample. Our reconstructed images resolve features beyond the physical diffraction-limit set by the system’s objective and demonstrate 3D multimodal imaging with [Formula: see text] m(3) resolution over a volume of [Formula: see text] m(3).

High-content biological microscopy targets high-resolution imaging across large fields-of-view (FOVs). Recent works have demonstrated that computational imaging can provide efficient solutions for high-content microscopy. Here, we use speckle structured illumination microscopy (SIM) as a robust and cost-effective solution for high-content fluorescence microscopy with simultaneous high-content quantitative phase (QP). This multi-modal compatibility is essential for studies requiring cross-correlative biological analysis. Our method uses laterally-translated Scotch tape to generate high-resolution speckle illumination patterns across a large FOV. Custom optimization algorithms then jointly reconstruct the sample’s super-resolution fluorescent (incoherent) and QP (coherent) distributions, while digitally correcting for system imperfections such as unknown speckle illumination patterns, system aberrations and pattern translations. Beyond previous linear SIM works, we achieve resolution gains of 4× the objective’s diffraction-limited native resolution, resulting in 700 nm fluorescence and 1.2 μm QP resolution, across a FOV of [Formula: see text] , giving a space-bandwidth product (SBP) of 60 megapixels.

We demonstrate a 3D super-resolution optical fluctuation imaging (SOFI) method using speckle illumination. Resolution enhancement of 1.6× is demonstrated in all three dimensions, as compared to traditional wide-field fluorescence images.

The goal of the present study was to examine whether cross-language activation of a bilingual’s native language influences the processing of lexical ambiguity within a second language. Highly proficient Spanish-English bilinguals performed a semantic verification task in which sentence frames were followed by the presentation of the final word of the sentence (the prime word). Participants then decided whether a follow-up target word was related to the meaning of the sentence. On critical trials the sentences ended in a semantically ambiguous word that was either a cognate with Spanish (e.g., novel), or a noncognate control matched on frequency and length (e.g., fast). The preceding sentence context biased the subordinate meaning (e.g., new; refrain from eating) and targets were related to the irrelevant, dominant meaning (e.g., BOOK; SPEED). Mean reaction times and error rates were greater when the prime words were ambiguous cognates than when they were ambiguous noncognates. This suggests that the semantic representations from the native language were coactivated and increased the lexical competition from the shared, dominant meaning. Implications for second language vocabulary acquisition and current models of reading are discussed.

We compare the results from several previously proposed phase retrieval algorithms using experimental Fourier Ptychography datasets and show importance of background subtraction and regularization for robustness with noisy imperfect data.

We experimentally demonstrate X-ray phase imaging and tomography with a sandpaper analyzer. Digital image correlation and filtered back projection algorithms are adopted for phase gradient calculation and three-dimensional reconstruction, respectively.

We demonstrate a new computational illumination technique that achieves a large space–bandwidth–time product, for quantitative phase imaging of unstained live samples in vitro. Microscope lenses can have either a large field of view (FOV) or high resolution, and not both. Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a new computational imaging technique that circumvents this limit by fusing information from multiple images taken with different illumination angles. The result is a gigapixel-scale image having both a wide FOV and high resolution, i.e., a large space–bandwidth product. FPM has enormous potential for revolutionizing microscopy and has already found application in digital pathology. However, it suffers from long acquisition times (of the order of minutes), limiting throughput. Faster capture times would not only improve the imaging speed, but also allow studies of live samples, where motion artifacts degrade results. In contrast to fixed (e.g., pathology) slides, live samples are continuously evolving at various spatial and temporal scales. Here, we present a new source coding scheme, along with real-time hardware control, to achieve 0.8 NA resolution across a 4× FOV with subsecond capture times. We propose an improved algorithm and a new initialization scheme, which allow robust phase reconstruction over long time-lapse experiments. We present the first FPM results for both growing and confluent in vitro cell cultures, capturing videos of subcellular dynamical phenomena in popular cell lines undergoing division and migration. Our method opens up FPM to applications with live samples, for observing rare events in both space and time.

The purpose of this study was to examine mental representation of Chinese–English bilinguals using an episodic recognition task (ERT) in priming paradigm. Two experiments were conducted. The stimuli were L1–L2 word pairs in experiment 1, and pairs of nonsense symbols in experiment 2. In both experiments, clear priming effects by pure association between prime and target from training stage were found. Besides, as the repetition frequency of stimuli increases, the priming effect was more robust. We then concluded that L1 and L2 were not connected at lexical level. Literature showed the connection could be built by conceptual relationship. However, our results suggested conceptual relatedness was not required. Pure association itself could also connect the lexical representation of L1 and L2. An interconnection model was then supported.

A 71-year-old man asked for a F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) scan for follow-up of the renal cell carcinoma of right kidney after nephrectomy 2 years ago. Except for normal radioactivity outside the urinary system, however, a CT abnormality in the urinary bladder was noted but its character of metabolic activity was interfered with by the abundant physiological urine FDG radioactivity. After a simple procedure with intravenous administration of diuretics and asking the patient to hold his urine, the lesion emerged as an area of focal intense radioactivity after the dilute effect of the urine. The subsequent histologic examination via the cystoscopic biopsy revealed papillary urothelial carcinoma.

A dual-plane in-line digital holographic imaging method incorporating volume holographic microscopy (VHM) is presented to reconstruct objects in a single shot while eliminating zero-order and twin-image diffracted waves. The proposed imaging method is configured such that information from different axial planes is acquired simultaneously using multiplexed volume holographic imaging gratings, as used in VHM, and recorded as in-line holograms where the corresponding reference beams are generated in the fashion of Gabor's in-line holography. Unlike conventional VHM, which can take axial intensity information only at focal depths, the proposed method digitally reconstructs objects at any axial position. Further, we demonstrate the proposed imaging technique's ability to effectively eliminate zero-order and twin images for single-shot three-dimensional object reconstruction.

Open cavities are often employed as interaction structures in a new generation of coherent millimeter, sub-millimeter, and terahertz (THz) radiation sources called the gyrotron. One of the open ends of the cavity is intended for rapid extraction of the radiation generated by a powerful electron beam. Up to the sub-THz regime, the diffraction loss from this open end dominates over the Ohmic losses on the walls, which results in a much lower diffraction quality factor (Qd) than the Ohmic quality factor (Qohm). Early analytical studies have led to various expressions for Qd and shed much light on its properties. In this study, we begin with a review of these studies, and then proceed with the derivation of an analytical expression for Qd accurate to high order. Its validity is verified with numerical solutions for a step-tunable cavity commonly employed for the development of sub-THz and THz gyrotrons.
