SELF-perception , *LIBRARIES , *ACADEMIC libraries - Abstract
The self-image, role, and organizational status of libraries have changed significantly over the past few decades. The academic library was once a fixed and independent institution in the academy, based on its functional tasks. Various external factors as well as internal adjustments, the transformation of the publication system, or the conscious switch to a service provider have brought a significant change which will continue into 2040 and beyond. This article shows that the course is already being set today for the direction in which the library will continue to change in the future. However, it cannot be answered whether it will (again) be more than just the sum of its individual offerings and services in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Commercial and research applications of artificial Intelligence (AI) are becoming increasingly important. AI is used to improve products, predict customer behavior, keep track of inventory, and analyze Big Data. AI agents are also employed to improve the performance of search engines and smartphones. There are a number of ways that AI is being considered for applications in the library, especially data analysis, supporting remote access to library services, and making the library a center for research using Big Data. AI has the potential to perform routine tasks that now require a human being, which will free up librarians to offer the in-depth expertise that is essential for advanced research. FUNCTION spaces , *SOCIAL space , *SOCIAL interaction , *CROWDSOURCING , *DIGITIZATION , *INSTITUTIONAL repositories - Abstract
In the wake of digitization, libraries are losing their primary function of being repositories for books. They are already developing more and more into social spaces in which human interaction takes the place of solitary reading. Digitization aims to strengthen interactivity in dealing with all artifacts, including books. It invites commentary, editing, and change. It is assumed here that in the future the library will increasingly function as a space in which these processes will take place. This leads to a radical new conception that is likely to affect all educational institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LIBRARY public services , *PUBLIC spaces , *PUBLIC libraries , *PROTOTYPES , *LIBRARIES - Abstract
In October 2017, the LibraryLab was created in the Central Library of the Public Libraries of the city of Düsseldorf. The area began as an open experimentation platform and a place for visitors and the team to get creative and try things out, and was relaunched in 2021 in the Central Library in KAP1, which opened at a new location and with a new concept. Through the experiences of the last few years, it has matured from a prototype to a service that is firmly anchored in the overall concept of the Central Library, while at the same time always remaining ready to develop further and grow with the needs of the visitors. In the "Co working LibraryLab" format, professional colleagues are invited to exchange ideas about working on innovative areas and services in public libraries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 pandemic , *DIGITAL technology , *LIENS , *PANDEMICS , *CONTINUITY , *PREPAREDNESS , *LIBRARIES - Abstract
As Singapore strives towards its vision of becoming a Smart Nation, the libraries in Singapore are also aiming to drive transformation through innovative services, resources, and facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the digitalisation effort of Lien Ying Chow Library (LYCL) of Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) to explore and adopt efficient use of innovative digital technologies to better streamline processes, improve productivity, and enhance patron experience. This paper discusses how the COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges to LCYL's business continuity plans and how LCYL has responded and embraced the unprecedented rapid need for changes to design and implement stop-gap measures. LYCL has also effected sustainable measures that are aligned with its 'Library of the Future' initiative (process, service, and product innovations) to forge ahead into the post-pandemic era. Several implementations and initiatives in the area of smart infrastructure, smart learning resources, and digital solutions continue to be relevant and will continue to be employed in the post-pandemic era which will continue to be very much hybrid in nature. Libraries need to use several different methods when determining the needs and wishes of students and academic patrons for future academic libraries and documentation centers. In this paper, the authors report findings from a survey in Romania and interviews in Norway, on what innovative issues students are imagining in future libraries. Among the trends students and academics are foreseeing are found green libraries, including green information literacy, bibliometrics/scientometrics, library as "home", makerspace (3D-printing) and libraries as centers for documentation, for academic writing and for other necessary skills.

- Abstract
Germany as a unified site for science and scholarship aims to enlarge its share of open access publications by means of transformative agreements with large publishers. This, however, is but a transformation in the sense of a soft evolution within the existing system. It prohibits the notion of equity that was once foundational for open access. The future of the library seems to be reduced to the role of the local administrator instead of it being an integrative institution with the ability to change the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LIBRARY design & construction ,ELECTRIC light fixtures ,FINISHES & finishing ,DIGITAL technology ,ORGANIZATIONAL change - Abstract
Throughout their history, all civilized states have built buildings for libraries in line with their needs, possibilities, and imperatives. Every time any dedicated structures were designed and built to host a library, they incorporated the sense for their further use by future generations. Thus, there evolved a basis for a library of the future. The presented cases from modern international practices in library design and construction illustrate a broad range of expanding possibilities in architecture and design in this new thematic area. The use of modern structural systems, finishing materials, and lighting fixtures enable interesting and unique features in library buildings, while new spatial organisation changes the layout structure and architectonics of libraries. What is this library of the future? What particularities make it different from the libraries of the past and present? What are the key criteria of a high-quality library functioning in the future? These are major questions explored in the paper that, when answered, provide clear conclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We live in a time of great change, an increasingly global society, knitted together by pervasive communications and transportation technologies and driven by the exponential growth of new knowledge. It is a time of challenge and contradiction, as an ever-increasing human population threatens global sustainability; a global, knowledge-driven economy places a new premium on workforce skills through phenomena such as off-shoring; governments place increasing confidence in market forces to reflect public priorities even as new paradigms such as open-source technologies challenge conventional free-market philosophies; shifting geopolitical tensions driven by the great disparity in wealth and power about the globe, national security, and terrorism. (Friedman, 2005) Yet it is also a time of unusual opportunity and reason for optimism as these same technologies enable the formation of new communities and social institutions, better able to address the needs of our society. The technological tools are of paramount importance for the development of the libraries of the future. In view of this, it is interesting to improve this field by presenting a tool already known in the marketing area, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), in order to use it in library management. This research aims to develop a prototype from a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool, adapting it to the relationship of libraries with their interactors. As methodology was the exploratory-descriptive case study with a qualitative approach, based on the Sugar CRM tool operationalized for UDESC's university library. It was identified that the SugarCRM tool as an open source technology can collaborate to improve the relationship of the library with its interactors, from the adaptation of the modules: creation of contacts, creation of campaigns, creation of management of occurrences, reports and monitoring. Brazilian libraries can develop mechanisms through open source tools to adapt their products and services, with the interacting agent as a focus when aiming to become libraries of the future.
