Abstract

The spin-induced ferroelectricity in quasi-1D spin chain system is little known, which could be fundamentally different from those in three-dimensional (3D) system. Here, we report the ferroelectricity driven by a tilted screw spin order and its exotic dynamic in the spin-chain compound Ba9Fe3Se15. It is found that the spin-induced polarization has already occurred and exhibits magnetoelectric coupling behavior far above the long-range spin order (LRSO) at TN = 14 K. The polarized entities grow and their dynamic responses slow down gradually with decreasing temperature and permeate the whole lattice to form 3D ferroelectricity at TN. Our results reveal that the short-range spin orders (SRSOs) in the decoupled chains play a key role for the exotic dynamic in this dimension reduced system. Ba9Fe3Se15 is the only example so far which exhibits electric polarization above LRSO temperature because of the formation of SRSOs.

Abstract

Topology, a mathematical concept in geometry, has become an ideal theoretical tool for describing topological states and phase transitions. Many topological concepts have found their physical entities in real or reciprocal spaces identified by topological/geometrical invariants, which are usually defined on orientable surfaces such as torus and sphere. It is natural to quest whether it is possible to find the physical realization of more intriguing non-orientable surfaces. Herein, we show that the set of spin-induced ferroelectric polarizations in cubic perovskite oxides AMn3Cr4O12 (A = La and Tb) resides on the topological Roman surface, a non-orientable two-dimensional manifold formed by sewing a Mobius strip edge to that of a disc. The induced polarization may travel in a loop along the non-orientable Mobius strip or orientable disc depending on how the spin evolves as controlled by external magnetic field. Experimentally, the periodicity of polarization can be the same or the twice of the rotating magnetic field, being well consistent with the orientability of disc and Mobius strip, respectively. This path dependent topological magnetoelectric effect presents a way to detect the global geometry of the surface and deepens our understanding of topology in both mathematics and physics, Comment: 46 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

In order to improve the defect recognition efficiency of transmission lines, the industry is currently using aerial images for automatic visual defect detection to ensure the safe operation of transmission lines. This paper proposes a method for defect recognition from coarse to fine, based on convolutional neural networks and connected domain algorithms, to improve recognition accuracy. The recognition speed is improved by using the knowledge distillation method of target detection networks based on decoupled features, adversarial features, and attention features. It has been found that the optimized recognition model improves the precision rate by 7%, the recall rate by 8%, and the average accuracy rate by 10%. The FPS of the model optimized by knowledge distillation is 62.5, and the average value of the FPS of other versions of this model is 47.35. It is believed that the two optimization ideas introduced in this paper can enhance the previous transmission line defect recognition algorithm in terms of accuracy and recognition speed.

Abstract

Radiation protection is an important field of study, as it relates to human health and environmental safety. Radiation-resistance mechanisms in extremophiles are a research hotspot, as this knowledge has great application value in bioremediation and development of anti-radiation drugs. Mount Everest, an extreme environment of high radiation exposure, harbors many bacterial strains resistant to radiation. However, owing to the difficulties in studying them because of the extreme terrain, many remain unexplored. In this study, a novel species (herein, S7-12T) was isolated from the moraine of Mount Everest, and its morphology and functional and genomic characteristics were analyzed. The strain S7-12T is white in color, smooth and rounded, non-spore-forming, and non-motile and can survive at a UV intensity of 1000 J/m2, showing that it is twice as resistant to radiation as Deinococcus radiodurans. Radiation-resistance genes, including IbpA and those from the rec and CspA gene families, were identified. The polyphasic taxonomic approach revealed that the strain S7-12T (=KCTC 59114T =GDMCC 1.3458T) is a new species of the genus Knoellia and is thus proposed to be named glaciei. The in-depth study of the genome of strain S7-12T will enable us to gain further insights into its potential use in radiation resistance. Understanding how microorganisms resist radiation damage could reveal potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets, leading to the discovery of potent anti-radiation compounds, thereby improving human resistance to the threat of radiation. 50. A novel UV-resistant bacterium Sphingomonas endolithica sp. nov., and genomic analysis, isolated from the north slope of Mount Everest.

Abstract

Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium strain ZFBP2030T was isolated from a rock on the North slope of Mount Everest. This strain contained a unique ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) as a predominant respiratory quinone. Among the tested fatty acids, the strain contained summed feature 8, C14:0 2OH, and C16:0, as major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidyl glycerol, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, three unidentified phospholipids, two unidentified aminolipids, and six unidentified lipids. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was a meso-diaminopimelic acid, and cell-wall sugars were ribose and galactose. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain ZFBP2030T was a member of the genus Sphingomonas, exhibiting high sequence similarity to the 16S rRNA gene sequences of Sphingomonas aliaeris DH-S5T (97.9%), Sphingomonas alpina DSM 22537T (97.3%) and Sphingomonas hylomeconis CCTCC AB 2013304T (97.0%). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between ZFBP2030T and other typical strains was less than 97.0%. The average amino acid identity values, average nucleotide identity, and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values between strain ZFBP2030T and its highest sequence similarity strains were 56.9–79.9%, 65.1–82.2%, and 19.3–25.8%, respectively. The whole-genome size of the novel strain ZFBP2030T was 4.1 Mbp, annotated with 3838 protein-coding genes and 54 RNA genes. Moreover, DNA G + C content was 64.7 mol%. Stress-related functions predicted in the subsystem classification of the strain ZFBP2030T genome included osmotic, oxidative, cold/heat shock, detoxification, and periplasmic stress responses. The overall results of this study clearly showed that strain ZFBP2030T is a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which the name Sphingomonas endolithica sp. nov. is proposed.
