An essay on the hesitancy of human being to kill other human being is presented. It examines inhibitions and belief influenced by cultures and historical eras, including the Hebrew Bible, the Greco-Roman and medieval Europe, that control people from performing lethal violence. Also mentioned is its morality in premodern beliefs wherein it is suggested that defying the killing leads to violence to oneself.
