However, its ability to attenuate fatigue during strength-based exercise is less certain. This study sought to determine the effects of a CHO mouth rinse on torque production and voluntary activation (VA%) after high-intensity and low-intensity isometric exercise. Twelve male subjects (22.5 ± 2.3 years; 183.5 ± 6.5 cm; 82.2 ± 13.9 kg) completed 4 testing sessions in a double-blind crossover fashion. Knee extension maximal voluntary isometric strength (MVC) was assessed before(Pre), immediately (iPost-Ex), and 5 minutes (5-min Post Ex) after isometric exercise performed at 80% or 20% of MVC. An 8% CHO solution or placebo (PLA) was rinsed for 20 seconds after exercise. VA% was determined by twitch interpolation. A 2 condition (CHO vs. PLA) × 2 contraction intensity (20 vs. 80%) × 3 time (Pre, iPost Ex, and 5-min Post Ex) completely within subject-repeated measured analysis of variance was performed; statistical significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. Greater reductions in MVC were found at iPost-Ex after exercise at 20% compared with 80% of MVC (-25 ± 14% vs. -11 ± 8%; p0.001) as well as for VA% (-17 ± 14% vs. -8 ± 14%; p0.004). No differences were observed in the CHO vs. PLA condition (p ≥ 0.34). We were successful in eliciting differing levels of central and peripheral fatigue by exercising at a low and high intensity. Despite significantly larger declines in VA% after exercise at 20% of MVC, CHO mouth rinsing had no effects compared with placebo on any measured variable.

Background: Reaction time is a cognitive-motoric connection that is important in making quick decisions. Due to the lack of time, medical student has low physical activity. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a strong and intense exercise interspersed with low intensity exercise that does not require much time. It has been known that can improve cognitive function. Objective: To determine the effect of HIIT on an individual’s reaction time. Methods: Quasi-experimental research with pre-test and post-test groups design. The research subjects were 29 medical students of Diponegoro University, woman, normal IMT, 18-22 ages, has no neurologic deficit. The control group instructed not to do any physical exercises (n=15) and the experimental group was given an intervention of HIIT exercises that consists of warm-up, core, and cool-down movements for 6 weeks (n=14). Reaction time scores before and after were measured using the Attention Network Test (ANT). The significance of the data was analyzed using the paired sample t-test the independent sample t-test. Results: A significant decrease in reaction time scores (p=0,007) in both the experimental and control groups. A significant difference in reaction time scores (p=0.007) between the experimental group before and after the intervention was 592,07±74,82 to 517,21±56,77 milisecond. A significant difference in reaction time scores (p=0.024) between the control group before and after the intervention was 611,73±78,93 to 574,06±47,06 milisecond. Recent research suggests that exercise is a beneficial adjunct therapy for many health conditions. For clinicians to be able to prescribe exercise to patients, more information is required around the intensity and duration of exercise and more specifically, guidelines need to be developed to ensure a consistent approach to patient care. When designing exercise intervention trials to explore the effects of different intensities, the same volume of exercise needs to be employed between experimental groups to ensure that any differences in responses result from differences in intensity and not energy expenditure (EE). This is because metabolic and peripheral adaptations such as mitochondrial and capillary density respond to the volume of exercise training rather than the intensity.

Background: Physical activity decreases the risk and development of many angiogenesis related health problems including atherosclerosis. Physiological influence of different physical activities on plasma endostatin concentration is contradictory. This study aimed to determine the effects of mild, moderate and vigorous exercise on the concentration of endostatin. Methodology: 22 participants, 16 males (age = 30.6 ± 7.8 years) and 6 females (age = 26.5 ± 5 years) were recruited. Weekly session of different intensities exercise based on predicted maximum heart (60% (low), 70% (moderate) and 80% (vigorous)] were carried out. One pre and two post exercise samples were taken at 10 and 60 minutes. Results: Low intensity exercise insignificantly decreased the endostatin concentration at 10 and 60 minutes (P = 0.5 and 0.8). However, moderate (P values = 0.022. 0.004) and vigorous intensities (P= < 0.001, 0.02) increased the endostatin concentrations significantly at both intervals respectively. The effects were not significantly influenced by gender, exercise mode (walking vs running), components of exercise (HR, Speed, Gradients, distance, duration) or metabolism during exercise (VO2 max, VCO2, RER, Energy expenditure). Conclusion: Low intensity exercises did not influence endostatin concentration. However, moderate to high intensity exercises significantly increase endostatin concentration and may have potential benefits.

Excessive fructose consumption causes ectopic lipid storage leading to metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases associated with defective substrate utilisation in the heart.Examining the preventive impact of low-intensity exercise on alterations related to fructose-rich diet (FRD) on cardiac fatty acid (FA) transport and metabolism.Male Wistar rats were divided into control and two groups that received 10% fructose for 9 weeks, one of which was additionally exposed to exercise.FRD elevated plasma and cardiac TAG, FATP1 in plasma membrane, Lipin 1 in microsomes and HSL mRNA, while mitochondrial CPT1 was decreased. Exercise decreased plasma free FA level, raised CD36 in plasma membrane and FATP1 in lysate, mitochondrial CPT1 and decreased microsomal Lipin 1 in fructose-fed rats.FRD changed plasma lipids and augmented partitioning of FA to TAG storage in the heart, whereas exercise in FRD rats switched metabolism of FA towards β-oxidation.

Preliminary evidence suggests exercise enhances mental health and cognitive performance among typically developing children and children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The goal of this study was to determine whether improvements vary depending on exercise intensity (e.g., high vs. low) or outcome domains (e.g., mood, behavior, academic productivity), and whether effects vary over time. Participants were 130 children (73% in ADHD group) aged 6 to 13 who completed daily exercise (high or low intensity) across 15 days as well as daily measures of pre- and post-activity mood, behavior and academic productivity. Results indicated no differences in the effectiveness of low- versus high- intensity exercise for youth with and without ADHD on overall mood, behavior, or academic productivity. Moreover, although there were no differences in academic productivity over time among children with and without ADHD in the low or high intensity exercise conditions, there were differences in behavior and mood over time among children with and without ADHD in the high, but not low, intensity condition. Specifically, relative to children without ADHD, children with ADHD had a wider range of behavior problems immediately after high intensity exercise and showed worse initial moods and more negative change over time in mood. Findings suggest that high intensity exercise delivered in certain formats can be associated with worse mood and behavior over time among youth with ADHD. Future research is needed to draw firmer conclusions about the relative short- and long-term effectiveness of high and low intensity exercise for youth with and without ADHD.

Moderate-intensity exercise improves insulin sensitivity, which may depend on the intensity, duration, and frequency of exercise. We examined the effects of a single bout of short-duration high-intensity exercise (HIE) and long-duration lowintensity exercise (LIE) on insulin sensitivity and the adiponectin/leptin ratio in individuals with different body mass indices (BMIs) who do not exercise regularly.We enrolled 42 healthy volunteers aged 20-64 years and divided them into two groups based on BMI: BMI24 kg/mWe finally analyzed 27 normal weight and 9 obese individuals. No significant differences were observed in the baseline information of both BMI groups. Homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance significantly improved for both exercise patterns in the normal weight group and for the HIE pattern in the obese group (P0.01), whereas the adiponectin/leptin ratio increased significantly only among normal weight participants with the LIE intervention.Both exercise patterns in BMI24 kg/m

Mental disorders (e.g., depression) and sedentary behavior are increasing, also among emerging adults. One particular target group of emerging adults with high sitting times and vulnerability to mental disorders are university students. In particular, anxiety and depressive symptoms as well as stress symptoms are very common among university students. The present manuscript discusses whether physical activity and exercise interventions can help to promote the mental health of emerging adults such as university students. The manuscript will summarize current scientific evidence and based on this evidence, introduce an university-based scientific research project that investigates if physical activity, exercise interventions and acute bouts of exercise of low- to moderate intensity can buffer perceived stress, alleviate mental health symptoms and strengthen well-being (psychologically and physiologically) among university students by positively influencing depressive and anxiety symptoms, perceived stress and emotion perception, body awareness and subjective well-being including overall quality of life. The research project, its concept, multimethod approach, and first results from available studies are discussed in relation to current scientific evidence, health care needs and future developments. The results from the studies conducted within the research project so far and that are briefly summarized in this manuscript suggest that physical activity, mental health and well-being are positively related, also in university students as an important group of emerging adults. The results further suggest that exercise interventions comprising aerobic exercises of low- to moderate intensity may work best to improve mental health (alleviate depressive symptoms and perceived stress) among university students after a few weeks of intervention. In addition, acute bouts of certain types of exercises (yoga in particular) seem to be particularly effective in changing perception of bodily signals, cardiac activity and emotion processing immediately after the exercise. Diabetes mellitus induces skeletal muscle dysfunction, such as decreased metabolic activity and capillarization. This study aimed to investigate the effects of aerobic low intensity exercise training on metabolic oxidative capacity and capillarization in skeletal muscle of non-obese diabetic rats. Eleven to twenty-five week-old male non-obese Spontaneous Diabetic Torii (SDT) rats (n = 11) and age-matched healthy male Sprague-Dawley SD rats (n = 11) were randomly assigned to either exercise or sedentary groups. The exercise training was performed on a low-speed motorized treadmill (15 m min-1) for 60 min per session, 5 sessions per week for 14 weeks in exercised groups. Sedentary SDT rats resulted in hyperglycemia, reduction of metabolic oxidative enzyme, and low percentage of oxidative fibers in the skeletal muscles. The low-intensity exercise training inhibited the growth-related increase in glucose level, and increased the muscle oxidative enzyme in exercised SDT rats compared with sedentary SDT rats. In addition, the exercise program prevented capillary regression in the skeletal muscle of diabetic rats. These results suggest that low-intensity exercise training may be an effective treatment to counter the detrimental effects of type 2 diabetes mellitus on the oxidative capacity and the capillary network of skeletal muscles.

Numerous pathophysiological conditions induce hypoxemia-related cardiopulmonary perturbations, decrements in exercise capacity, and debilitating symptoms. Accordingly, this study investigated the efficacy of an allosteric hemoglobin modulator (voxelotor) to enhance arterial oxygen saturation during low-intensity exercise in hypoxia. Eight normal healthy subjects (36 ± 7 yr; 73.8 ± 9.5 kg; 3 women) completed a submaximal cycling test (60 W) under normoxic ([Formula: see text]: 0.21; O(2) partial pressure: 144 mmHg) and hypoxic ([Formula: see text]: 0.125; O(2) partial pressure: 82 mmHg) conditions before (day 1) and after (day 15) 14 days of oral drug administration. While stationary on a cycle ergometer and during exercise, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and dyspnea, oxygen consumption (V̇o(2)), and cardiac output (Q) were measured noninvasively, while arterial blood pressure (MAP) and blood gases ([Formula: see text] , [Formula: see text] , and [Formula: see text]) were measured invasively. The 14-day drug administration left shifted the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve (ODC; p50 measured at standard pH and Pco(2); day 1: 28.0 ± 2.1 mmHg vs. day 15: 26.1 ± 1.8 mmHg, P < 0.05). RPE, dyspnea, V̇o(2), Q, and MAP were not different between day 1 and day 15. [Formula: see text] was similar during normoxia on day 1 and day 15 while stationary but higher during exercise (day 1: 95.2 ± 0.4% vs. day 15: 96.6 ± 0.3%, P < 0.05). [Formula: see text] was higher during hypoxia on day 15 while stationary (day 1: 82.9 ± 3.4% vs. day 15: 90.9 ± 1.8%, P < 0.05) and during exercise (day 1: 73.6 ± 2.5% vs. day 15: 84.8 ± 2.7%, P < 0.01). [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] were systematically higher and lower, respectively, after drug (P < 0.01), while the alveolar-arterial oxygen difference was unchanged suggesting hyperventilation contributed to the rise in [Formula: see text]. Oral administration of voxelotor left shifted the ODC and stimulated a mild hyperventilation, leading to improved arterial oxygen saturation without altering V̇o(2) and central hemodynamics during rest and low-intensity exercise. This effect was more pronounced during submaximal hypoxic exercise, when arterial desaturation was more evident. Additional studies are needed to determine the effects of voxelotor during maximal exercise and under chronic forms of hypoxia. NEW & NOTEWORTHY In humans, a novel allosteric hemoglobin-oxygen affinity modulator was administered to comprehensively examine the cardiopulmonary consequences of stabilizing a portion of the available hemoglobin in a high-oxygen affinity state during submaximal exercise in normoxia and hypoxia. Oral administration of voxelotor enhanced arterial oxygen saturation during submaximal exercise without altering oxygen consumption and central hemodynamics; however, the partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide was reduced and the partial pressure of arterial oxygen was increased implying that hyperventilation also contributed to the increase in oxygen saturation. The preservation of arterial oxygen saturation and content was particularly evident during hypoxic submaximal exercise, when arterial desaturation typically occurs, but this did not influence arterial-venous oxygen difference.

Wearable sensors have the potential to enable measurement of sweat chloride outside the clinic. Here we assess the feasibility of mild exercise as an alternative to pilocarpine iontophoresis for sweat generation. The results from this proof-of-concept study suggest that mild exercise could be a feasible approach to obtain reliable measurements of sweat chloride concentration within 20–30 min using a wearable sensor.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the use of both surgical masks and FFP2 respirators on the inspiratory muscle strength, metabolic parameters, heart rate, subjective perceived exertion, and dyspnea perception, before and during 30 min stable load exercise at “conversational level”. Methods: A randomized cross-over study was carried out. Nineteen healthy adults completed 3 conditions (without a mask, with a surgical mask or an FFP2 respirator) during a 30-min steady-state test at the lactate threshold intensity. Inspiratory muscle strength was measured before and after the test, and metabolic parameters, heart rate, subjective perceived exertion, and dyspnea perception were collected at baseline, during, and after the test. Results: There was a significant reduction in inspiratory muscle strength after the 30-min test in all conditions (control: 6.26 mm Hg, p < 0.5; surgical mask: 8.55 mm Hg, p < 0.01; FFP2 respirator: 12.42 mm Hg, p < 0.001), but without significant differences between them (p = 0.283). Data showed a statistically significant effect for time, but did not show a statistically significant interaction between condition and time for heart rate (p = 0.674), oxygen saturation (p = 0.297), blood lactate level (p = 0.991), rating perceived exertion (p = 0.734) and dyspnea (p = 0.532) comparisons. Conclusions: The present study findings suggested that inspiratory muscle strength and physiological parameters during “conversational level” exercise were not impaired under wearing masks in healthy, nonsmoking young adults.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of acute exercise and hypoxic exposure on the level of circulating selenoprotein P (SeP), which is known to cause insulin and exercise resistance, and expression of the muscle peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ co-activator-1α (PGC-1α) gene in pre-diabetes rat models. Fifteen week old male Wistar rats (n = 20) were fed with a high-fat diet and water ad libitum for 3 weeks. After the acclimation period, they were assigned to sedentary or exercise groups under normoxic (20.9% O2) and hypoxic (14.5% O2) conditions. Each of the exercise groups (NE and HE) was administered two 30-min no-load swimming exercises with an interval of 5-min rest. The serum, the liver, and the triceps muscle were obtained 3 h after the exercises. Hypoxic exposure did not affect hepatic SeP mRNA, serum SeP protein, and muscle PGC-1α mRNA expression. In contrast, acute swimming exercise reduced circulating SeP concentration and increased PGC-1α mRNA expression in triceps muscle. In conclusion, acute swimming exercise rather than moderate hypoxic exposure might improve insulin and exercise resistance in pre-diabetes conditions for type 2 diabetes.

Adaptations in hepatic and skeletal muscle substrate metabolism following acute and chronic (6 wk; 5 days/wk; 1 h/day) low-intensity treadmill exercise were tested in healthy male C57BL/6J mice. Low-intensity exercise maximizes lipid utilization; therefore, we hypothesized pathways involved in lipid metabolism would be most robustly affected. Acute exercise nearly depleted liver glycogen immediately postexercise (0 h), whereas hepatic triglyceride (TAG) stores increased in the early stages after exercise (0–3 h). Also, hepatic peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α ( PGC-1α) gene expression and fat oxidation (mitochondrial and peroxisomal) increased immediately postexercise (0 h), whereas carbohydrate and amino acid oxidation in liver peaked 24–48 h later. Alternatively, skeletal muscle exhibited a less robust response to acute exercise as stored substrates (glycogen and TAG) remained unchanged, induction of PGC-1α gene expression was delayed (up at 3 h), and mitochondrial substrate oxidation pathways (carbohydrate, amino acid, and lipid) were largely unaltered. Peroxisomal lipid oxidation exhibited the most dynamic changes in skeletal muscle substrate metabolism after acute exercise; however, this response was also delayed (peaked 3–24 h postexercise), and expression of peroxisomal genes remained unaffected. Interestingly, 6 wk of training at a similar intensity limited weight gain, increased muscle glycogen, and reduced TAG accrual in liver and muscle; however, substrate oxidation pathways remained unaltered in both tissues. Collectively, these results suggest changes in substrate metabolism induced by an acute low-intensity exercise bout in healthy mice are more rapid and robust in liver than in skeletal muscle; however, training at a similar intensity for 6 wk is insufficient to induce remodeling of substrate metabolism pathways in either tissue. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Effects of low-intensity exercise on substrate metabolism pathways were tested in liver and skeletal muscle of healthy mice. This is the first study to describe exercise-induced adaptations in peroxisomal lipid metabolism and also reports comprehensive adaptations in mitochondrial substrate metabolism pathways (carbohydrate, lipid, and amino acid). Acute low-intensity exercise induced shifts in mitochondrial and peroxisomal metabolism in both tissues, but training at this intensity did not induce adaptive remodeling of metabolic pathways in healthy mice.

Hypothermia can occur during aquatic exercise despite production of significant amounts of heat by the active muscles. Because the characteristics of human thermoregulatory responses to cold during exercise have not been fully elucidated, we investigated the effect of low-intensity exercise on the shivering response to core cooling in cool water. Eight healthy young men (24 ± 3 yr) were cooled through cool water immersion while resting (rest trial) and during loadless pedaling on a water cycle ergometer (exercise trial). Before the cooling, body temperature was elevated by hot water immersion to clearly detect a core temperature at which shivering initiates. Throughout the cooling period, mean skin temperature remained around the water temperature (25°C) in both trials, whereas esophageal temperature (Tes) did not differ between the trials ( P > 0.05). The Tes at which oxygen uptake (V̇o2) rapidly increased, an index of the core temperature threshold for shivering, was lower during exercise than rest (36.2 ± 0.4°C vs. 36.5 ± 0.4°C, P < 0.05). The sensitivity of the shivering response, as indicated by the slope of the Tes-V̇o2 relation, did not differ between the trials (−441.3 ±177.4 ml·min−1·°C−1 vs. −411.8 ± 268.1 ml·min−1·°C−1, P > 0.05). The thermal sensation response to core cooling, assessed from the slope and intercept of the regression line relating Tes and thermal sensation, did not differ between the trials ( P > 0.05). These results suggest that the core temperature threshold for shivering is delayed during low-intensity exercise in cool water compared with rest although shivering sensitivity is unaffected.

Exercise affects various organs. However, its effects on nutrient digestion and absorption in the intestinal tract are not well understood. A few studies have reported that exercise training in-creases the expression of carbohydrate digestion and absorption molecules. Exercise was also shown to increase the concentration of blood glucagon like peptide-2(GLP-2), which regulates carbohydrate digestion and absorption in small intestinal epithelium. Therefore, we investigated the effects of exercise on intestinal digestion and absorption molecules and the levels of GLP-2. 6-wk-old of male mice were divided into 2 groups; sedentary (SED) and low-intensity exercise (LEx). LEx mice were required to run on a treadmill (12.5 m/min, 60 min), whereas SED mice rested. All mice were euthanized 1 h after exercise or rest and plasma, jejunum, ileum, and colon were sampled. Samples were analyzed using EIA and immunoblotting. The levels of plasma GLP-2 and the expression of the GLP-2 receptor, sucrase-isomaltase (SI), and glucose transporter (GLUT2) in the jejunum were increased in LEx group. We showed that acute low-intensity exer-cise affects the intestinal carbohydrate digestion and absorption molecules via GLP-2. Our results suggest that exercise might provide new benefits to the small intestine for people with intestinal frailty.

The upcoming Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games may be held amid extremely high wet-bulb globe temperature conditions. Many studies have focused on countermeasures to prevent the reduction in exercise performance in the heat. However, cooling strategies for managing heat stress of staff and spectators remain poorly understood. The present study investigated the effects of a lightweight fan cooling device, namely a commercially available air-perfused rucksack, on physiological and perceptual responses during low-intensity exercise in a hot environment. Ten males walked (5.5 km/h, 2.0% gradient) for 60 min in hot conditions (35°C, 50% relative humidity). All participants performed two trials with and without the air-perfused rucksack, respectively. SUMMARY OBJECTIVE The purpose of our study was to confirm the relationship between low-intensity exercise and physical and mental health status among college students in China. METHODS This was a school-based cross-sectional study. The physical and mental health status was measured using a 12-item general health questionnaire(GHQ12) and low-intensity exercise was recorded by a self-reporting questionnaire. RESULTS The results revealed that the score of the GHQ12 was inversely associated with a higher frequency of low-intensity exercise (r=-0.38,p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that low-intensity exercise may be a proper mean for improving the physical and mental health status of college students. School departments should take measures to push students to take part in physical activity. RESUMO OBJETIVO O objetivo do nosso estudo foi confirmar a relação entre o exercício de baixa intensidade e o estado de saúde física e mental entre estudantes universitários na China. MÉTODOS Estudo transversal com base na escola foi realizado neste estudo. O estado de saúde física e mental foi medido recorrendo-se a questionários gerais de saúde (GHQ12); exercícios de baixa intensidade foram coletados por questionários de autorrelato. RESULTADOS Os resultados revelaram que a pontuação do GHQ12 foi inversamente associada com maior frequência de exercícios de baixa intensidade (r=–0,38, p=0,001). CONCLUSÕES Nosso estudo sugeriu que o exercício de baixa intensidade pode ser um meio adequado para melhorar o estado físico e mental dos estudantes universitários. O departamento relacionado à escola deve tomar alguma medida para forçar os alunos a participar da atividade física.

In patients with chronic lung disease, partitioning aerobic exercise training to maximize peripheral muscle and vascular adaptation is feasible and effective. The application of one-legged cycle training as part of pulmonary rehabilitation provides an opportunity for clinicians to advance the impact of pulmonary rehabilitation beyond that usually measured following conventional low intensity exercise.

Background Regular physical activity is associated with cardiovascular health; however, intensive exercise can have harmful effects on the heart. Two-dimensional (2D) speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) is a well-established diagnostic tool to evaluate subclinical myocardial dysfunction and has been widely used in athletes in recent years. This study is designed to evaluate whether low-intensity exercise has beneficial effects on myocardial performance. We aimed to evaluate systolic and diastolic functions of myocardium derived from STE in sports practitioners in a low-intensity exercise training program. Method Eighty-four sports practitioners and eighty-two sedentary healthy controls were prospectively included in our study. In addition to standard 2D echocardiographic measurements, left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS), right ventricular (RV) GLS, RV-free wall strain (FWS), left atrium (LA) strain, and strain rate were analyzed. Results Mean LV GLS was significantly higher in sports practitioners compared with sedentary population (-19.21 +/- 2.61% vs -18.37 +/- 2.75%,P = .044). RV GLS was significantly higher in sports practitioners than sedentary population (-21.82 +/- 4.86% vs -20.04 +/- 4.62%,P = .016). Longitudinal strain and strain rate of LA conduit phase were significantly higher in sports practitioners than sedentary participants (-23.60 +/- 6.83% vs -20.20 +/- 6.64%,P = .001; -2.45 +/- 0.81 L/s vs -2.10 +/- 0.89 L/s,P = .010; respectively). Also, LA conduit phase strain/contraction phase strain and conduit phase strain rate/contraction phase strain rate ratios were higher in sports practitioners (1.88 +/- 0.93 vs 1.48 +/- 0.63,P = .001; 1.42 +/- 0.65 vs 1.16 +/- 0.53,P = .005; respectively). Conclusion The findings in the current study suggest that regular low-intensity exercise may have a beneficial effect on both systolic and diastolic functions of the myocardium.

Objective To investigate the evidence and provide clinical recommendations for low intensity exercises(LIE) and blood flow restriction(BFR) without exercise on reducing the effects of exercise induced muscle damage(EIMD). Method PubMed, Embase, Web of science, and PEDro(Physiotherapy Evidence Database) were searched up to December 2019 for studies that included LIE or BFR without exercise and their effect on EIMD. Results Out of 3192 studies, 23 were included with 17 on LIE and 6 on BFR without exercise. 11 studies demonstrated positive effects for LIE on EIMD, with two level 2 and nine level 3 studies. Two level 2 and two level 3 studies found benefits for BFR without exercise on reducing the negative effects of EIMD, while two level 2 studies found did not find benefits for BFR without exercise. Conclusion Moderate to low levels of evidence supported LIE, particularly in the form of protective low load eccentric exercise, in reducing the negative effects of EIMD. Conflicting moderate to low levels of evidence was found regarding BFR without exercise. There does seem to be potential benefit for BFR without exercise in untrained individuals. Clinicians can provide clinical recommendations as LIE and BFR without exercise reducing EIMD.

Despite being apparently safe for most individuals, the impact of low intensity (LI) blood-flow restricted (BFR) exercise on nerve function and integrity is still obscure. We explored whether BFR (with and without exercise) alters the properties of nerve conduction measured at the level of the restricted limb. Thirteen healthy, young men (22.0 ± 1.7 years) were included in this study. Arterial occlusion pressure was taken at rest. Soleus M- and H-recruitment curves were constructed for all participants. H-wave latencies and amplitudes were obtained in three testing conditions (non-BFR vs. 60 vs. 80% BFR) at four different time points: [#1] non-restricted baseline, [#2] time control either with or without BFR, [#3] non-restricted pre-exercise, [#4] LI exercise either with or without BFR. Nerve conduction was estimated using the difference between the latency of H and M wave. BFR did not affect H-wave amplitude, either with or without exercise. The changes in the difference between H- and M-wave latency of over time were similar between all conditions (condition-by-time interaction: F = 0.7, p = 0.47). In conclusion, our data indicate that performing LI exercise with BFR, set at 60 or 80% BFR, does not exert a negative impact on sciatic-tibial nerve function. Thus, from a neurological standpoint, we provide preliminary evidence that LI BFR exercise may be regarded as a safe mode of resistance training in healthy young men.

BACKGROUND Individuals participating in exercise beyond their level of fitness may be at higher risk for exercise-induced muscle damage, however the impact of training status on muscle damage development is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to measure skeletal muscle damage and soreness after five days of high and low intensity exercise in previously trained and untrained individuals. METHODS Eighteen males and females (9 trained and 9 untrained) completed five consecutive days of high intensity (HI) exercise and five consecutive days of low intensity (LI) exercise. Blood was drawn at the initial visit and after completion of each exercise intensity period. RESULTS CK was elevated post exercise for both groups during both intensities, but was greater in trained vs. untrained (HI: 203.6 vs. 143.4 IU/L and LI: 156.4 vs. 109.3 IU/L; P

Physical exercise has long been proven as a way to increase metabolic status, synaptic plasticity and protein regulation in order to maintain cognitive function and brain health. There has been a limited study focusing on the protective effect of physical exercise towards cognitive function during stress. This research is quasi experimental studies with post test only control group design, conducted in the animal house and molecular biology laboratory of Medical Faculty of Universitas Sriwijaya. As many as 32 white mice age 10 weeks old weighing 25-35 gr were divided into four groups. The first group was the control group, the second one was treated with immobilization stress 2 hours/daily for 21 days, the third group had been conditioned for 30 minute running at a speed of 11 m/min for 14 days, while the fourth one was treated with physical exercise after being exposure to immobilization stress. The post synaptic density (PSD) 95 level in hippocampus and serum cortisol were measured by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, while spatial memory was assessed by using Morris Water Maze Test. Iimmobilization stress for 21 days showed significant elevation of serum cortisol as well as decrement of PSD 95 level and spatial memory compared to control group. Low intensity physical exercise showed significant elevation of PSD 95 level and spatial memory compared to control group. Therefore, low intensity physical exercise can prevent the decrement of PSD 95 level and spatial memory due to stress.

Taurine and alcohol has been popularly ingested through energy drinks. Reports from both compounds shows they are active on nervous system but little is known about the acute effect of these substances on the frontal cortex in an exercise approach. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of 0,6mldL-1 of ethanol (ET), 6g of taurine (TA), and taurine with ethanol (TA+ET) intake on absolute alpha power (AAP) in the frontal region, before and after exercise. Nine participants were recruited, five women (22±3years) and four men (26±5years), for a counterbalanced experimental design. For each treatment, the tests were performed considering three moments: "baseline", "peak" and "post-exercise". In the placebo treatment (PL), the frontal areas showed AAP decrease at the post-exercise. However, in the TA, AAP decreased at peak and increased at post-exercise. In the ET treatment, AAP increased at the peak moment for the left frontal electrodes. In the TA+ET treatment, an AAP increase was observed at peak, and it continued after exercise ended. These substances were able to produce electrocortical activity changes in the frontal regions after a short duration and low intensity exercise. Left and right regions showed different AAP dynamics during peak and post-exercise moments when treatments were compared.

The transitional period from hospital to home is critical to decreasing rates of preventable, poor post-discharge outcomes. Older adults with chronic heart failure (CHF) may be challenged to exercise during the transitional period. The purpose of the current study was to test the effects of low-intensity exercise on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), physical function, and heart function in Chinese older adults with CHF during the transitional period. The study was randomized, single-blinded, and controlled. Seventy-eight older adults with stable CHF were evaluated. The intervention group ( n = 41) participated in a regular low-intensity walking protocol and the control group ( n = 38) did not. Measures included the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ), 6-minute walk distance (6MWD), Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, resting heart rate (RHR), and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). After 12 weeks, the intervention group showed significant improvements in MLHFQ, 6MWD, and TUG scores compared to the control group ( p < 0.05), and no significant improvements in RHR and LVEF ( p > 0.05).
