2. Typological Analysis and Assessment of the Bone-Working Stone Inventory of the Zamostje 2 Late Mesolithic Layer

Abstract

The article presents the results of a typological and functional analysis of flint assemblage from the Late Mesolithic layer (II half of the 7th – early 6th millennium cal BC) at the site Zamostje 2 (Volga-Oka region). The studied series of flint implements is limited to a material from the excavations of 1996–97 and has 11892 artefacts. A typological analysis of the Late Mesolithic flint industry at Zamostje 2 showed the absence of standard blanks and the instability of tool morphology. The shaping of tools was due to the needs of production operations for hard materials. In order to reconstruct the features of bone production in the Late Mesolithic on the East European Plain, the collection was evaluated and 193 items were selected for use-wear analysis. The results of the experimental and traceological analysis revealed 24 tools with microtraces of bone processing, among which scrapers predominate. In a small number there are tools for sawing-cutting and burin cutting (grooves and engravings). A flint polished adze was used to chop a bone or elk antler. The identified implements for working bone (antler), on the one hand, showed a certain homogeneity of morphological characteristics and modes of shaping the working blades of the tools, on the other hand, gave a clear idea of the methods of processing solid organic raw materials in the Late Mesolithic period.

Abstract

This study is aimed to discover evolution peculiarities of bone processing techniques in the Late Mesolithic period (2nd half of VII mill. BC – beginning of VI mill. BC) based on the wetland multilayer site Zamostje 2, a reference settlement for Eastern Europe. The wellpreserved surface of organic artefacts enables authors to run an experimental traceological analysis with focus on traces of processing and use at various observation levels, which made it possible to reconstruct technical methods, general production features and specific types of work performed with ancient tools. The advantage of this study is that the results of the analysis and theoretical conclusions can be validated and verified using the same site’s materials. As a foundation for the interpretation of traces observed on the surface of bone artefacts and stone tools used in bone processing, the authors used reference traces obtained during specially conducted experiments. In the methodological context, the authors attempted to distinguish diagnostic features at the micro- and macroscopic levels of traces of bone processing in its various states (freshly frozen, freshly boiled, dry) confirmed by the description and visual data. Following the analysis, the authors succeeded in identifying parallels in the archaeological material as well as reconstructing some characteristic types of work and the context of their execution.

Abstract

Mesolithic geometric ornamentation is a part of the complex worldview of the latest hunter-gatherer societies. Questions about the functional role of the ornament in utilitarian objects – knives, daggers, arrowheads, etc. – do not have an unambiguous answer. Despite a variability of ornamental motives used, there are some stable connections between certain types of ornaments with some categories of bone tools. On the materials of the Late and Final Mesolithic layers of the wetland site Zamostje 2 (Volga-Oka region), we will consider some examples with the zigzag motif, the most numerous and heterogeneous type of ornament, as well as rarely presented motives of “ladders” and “lines with dots or eyelashes.” The number of samples (120) is sufficient to draw some preliminary conclusions about the context of their application. So, the zigzag is observed on different types of tools, but its connection with sharp-piercing objects is most clearly manifested. The type of relief zigzag is inextricably related to slotted sickle-shaped tools. Zigzag is often the only decorative element on an item and is expressed by a simple or double line; less often it is included in complex compositions. Both types of zigzags and methods of application (fine engraving, scraping, relief carving, etc.) were not regulated and obviously performed different functions depending on the compositional characteristics and the raw material’s type. Compositions of “ladders” located at an angle to each other are also associated with projectile weapons. Lines “with eyelashes” appear to have been a part of the standard dagger decoration.

Abstract

The site Zamostje 2, located in Sergiev-Posad district of Moscow (Russia) on the west bank of the Dubna River, has provided two Mesolithic and one Early Neolithic occupations dated from 7000 to 5400 cal BC. Thanks to the waterlogged environment, the site has an exceptional preservation. The site has yielded fishing screens, fishing fences, wooden fishing traps, and several small cordage remains elaborated with plant fibres, pine bark floats, fragments of paddles, and other wooden objects. In this work, we present the study of the fragments of cordage and fishing nets with the objective of providing new insights into the production and use of implements made of plant fibres. We have characterized the production process by analysing the morphological and technical characteristics by carrying out experimentation with plant fibres in order to obtain reference material to recognize them at an archaeological level. The analysis of 82 knots and 23 fragments of strings has allowed to determine that they were elaborated with single threads from 0.5 to 1.5 mm thick, which is noticeably smaller than most examples from other sites. All of them were elaborated with woody bast fibres.

Abstract

Western Eurasia witnessed several large-scale human migrations during the Holocene1,2,3,4,5. Here, to investigate the cross-continental effects of these migrations, we shotgun-sequenced 317 genomes—mainly from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods—from across northern and western Eurasia. These were imputed alongside published data to obtain diploid genotypes from more than 1,600 ancient humans. Our analyses revealed a ‘great divide’ genomic boundary extending from the Black Sea to the Baltic. Mesolithic hunter-gatherers were highly genetically differentiated east and west of this zone, and the effect of the neolithization was equally disparate. Large-scale ancestry shifts occurred in the west as farming was introduced, including near-total replacement of hunter-gatherers in many areas, whereas no substantial ancestry shifts happened east of the zone during the same period. Similarly, relatedness decreased in the west from the Neolithic transition onwards, whereas, east of the Urals, relatedness remained high until around 4,000 BP, consistent with the persistence of localized groups of hunter-gatherers. The boundary dissolved when Yamnaya-related ancestry spread across western Eurasia around 5,000 BP, resulting in a second major turnover that reached most parts of Europe within a 1,000-year span. The genetic origin and fate of the Yamnaya have remained elusive, but we show that hunter-gatherers from the Middle Don region contributed ancestry to them. Yamnaya groups later admixed with individuals associated with the Globular Amphora culture before expanding into Europe. Similar turnovers occurred in western Siberia, where we report new genomic data from a ‘Neolithic steppe’ cline spanning the Siberian forest steppe to Lake Baikal. These prehistoric migrations had profound and lasting effects on the genetic diversity of Eurasian populations.

The boundary dissolved when Yamnaya-related ancestry spread across western Eurasia around 5,000 bp, resulting in a second major turnover that reached most parts of Europe within a 1,000-year span. The genetic origin and fate of the Yamnaya have remained elusive, but we show that hunter-gatherers from the Middle Don region contributed ancestry to them. Yamnaya groups later admixed with individuals associated with the Globular Amphora culture before expanding into Europe. Similar turnovers occurred in western Siberia, where we report new genomic data from a ‘Neolithic steppe’ cline spanning the Siberian forest steppe to Lake Baikal. These prehistoric migrations had profound and lasting effects on the genetic diversity of Eurasian populations.

Abstract

Several major migrations and population turnover events during the later Stone Age (after c. 11,000 cal. BP) are believed to have shaped the contemporary population genetic diversity in Eurasia. While the genetic impacts of these migrations have been investigated on regional scales, a detailed understanding of their spatiotemporal dynamics both within and between major geographic regions across Northern Eurasia remains largely elusive. Here, we present the largest shotgun-sequenced genomic dataset from the Stone Age to date, representing 317 primarily Mesolithic and Neolithic individuals from across Eurasia, with associated radiocarbon dates, stable isotope data, and pollen records. Using recent advances, we imputed >1,600 ancient genomes to obtain accurate diploid genotypes, enabling previously unachievable fine-grained population structure inferences. We show that 1) Eurasian Mesolitic hunter-gatherers were more genetically diverse than previously known, and deeply divergent between the west and the east; 2) Hitherto genetically undescribed huntergatherers from the Middle Don region contributed significant ancestry to the later Yamnaya steppe pastoralists; 3) The genetic impact of the transition from Mesolithic hunter-gatherers to Neolithic farmers was highly distinct, east and west of a “Great Divide” boundary zone extending from the Black Sea to the Baltic, with large-scale shifts in genetic ancestry to the west. This include an almost complete replacement of hunter-gatherers in Denmark, but no substantial shifts during the same period further to the east; 4) Within-group relatedness changes substantially during the Neolithic transition in the west, where clusters of Neolithic farmer-associated individuals show overall reduced relatedness, while genetic relatedness remains high until ~4,000 BP in the east, consistent with a much longer persistence of smaller localised hunter-gatherer groups; 5) A fastpaced second major genetic transformation beginning around 5,0

Abstract

The transitions from foraging to farming and later to pastoralism in Stone Age Eurasia (c. 11-3 thousand years before present, BP) represent some of the most dramatic lifestyle changes in human evolution. We sequenced 317 genomes of primarily Mesolithic and Neolithic individuals from across Eurasia combined with radiocarbon dates, stable isotope data, and pollen records. Genome imputation and co-analysis with previously published shotgun sequencing data resulted in >1600 complete ancient genome sequences offering fine-grained resolution into the Stone Age populations. We observe that: 1) Hunter-gatherer groups were more genetically diverse than previously known, and deeply divergent between western and eastern Eurasia. 2) We identify hitherto genetically undescribed hunter-gatherers from the Middle Don region that contributed ancestry to the later Yamnaya steppe pastoralists; 3) The genetic impact of the Neolithic transition was highly distinct, east and west of a boundary zone extending from the Black Sea to the Baltic. Large-scale shifts in genetic ancestry occurred to the west of this “Great Divide”, including an almost complete replacement of hunter-gatherers in Denmark, while no substantial ancestry shifts took place during the same period to the east. This difference is also reflected in genetic relatedness within the populations, decreasing substantially in the west but not in the east where it remained high until c. 4,000 BP; 4) The second major genetic transformation around 5,000 BP happened at a much faster pace with Steppe-related ancestry reaching most parts of Europe within 1,000-years. Local Neolithic farmers admixed with incoming pastoralists in eastern, western, and southern Europe whereas Scandinavia experienced another near-complete population replacement. The most important changes in the economy and material culture in foraging societies of the Eastern Europe forest zone on the eve of the spread of ceramic production coincided with the 8.2ka Cold Event and its consequences. Abstract

Materials of the multilayer wetland site Zamostje 2 are key to study the human cultural history of the Volga-Oka interfluve in Central Russia due to the diversity and completeness of the material culture, on the one hand, and encompass large information potential of fragile organic remains preserved in the waterlogged conditions, on the other hand. The existence of the lake settlement in the broad framework of ca. 7000–4300 cal BC includes the period of distribution of the first ceramics and development of ceramic production among hunter-fisher-gatherers. The purpose of this paper to synthesize the data obtained by natural scientific methods on the reconstruction of the paleolandscape and animal and plant resources, as well as compare them with archaeological evidence of hunting and, in particular, fishing practices. New data from the fishing zone and geological structure of the microregion have been brought. This analysis creates a context for adaptation of various multidisciplinary studies and fuels discussions of paleoecological and cultural events characteristic for the Upper Volga region in the period under consideration.

32. New Evidence of the Fishing Economy of Stone Age Waterlogged Sites in Central and North-Western Russia: The Example of Zamostje 2

Investigations of Stone Age waterlogged sites in eastern Europe pose a great scientific interest due to the excellent preservation of organic materials. Excavations of settlements like Sārnate, Zvidze (Latvia), Šventoji (Lithuania), Purkajasuo (Finland), and Okhta 1 (Russia) are among the best examples of such research. New investigations in 2010–2013 at the peat-bog site of Zamostje 2 (Sergiev Posad district, Moscow region, Russia) were of special interest thanks to the discovery of a specific fishery zone dated to the Late Mesolithic–Early Neolithic periods. Several constructions made of wood were found in this particular part of the settlement: among them two fish traps made of wooden splinters and bound by common reed tapes, mobile fish screens, and 150 wooden piles. These finds, along with wooden, bone, antler, and pine bark artefacts (fish hooks, harpoons, floats, fishnet knots, paddles, etc.) allow us to state that fishery was a basic economic activity at this site. This statement is further supported by a large number of finds, including fish bones and fish scales, found in relevant cultural layers. Similar fishing constructions have been found recently at other sites in European Russia, too. In this article, we present main elements of the fishing economy at Zamostje 2 and some newly-found materials from other sites in central and north-western Russia. We also propose a typology for wooden fishing structures and outline some patterns of fishing strategies for this territory in the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods.

Prehistoric sites preserved in the waterlogged environments of northern Europe, the Baltic region, and Russia possess a number of common features related to the specifics of their locations in prehistoric times and the later conditions of their preservation. The lake settlements of the forest zone of European Russia did not undergo any drastic changes in their economy based on hunting and fishing during most of the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. The importance of fishing can be understood by studying the remains of wooden items from such sites, which include utensils like paddles, floats, and nets, as well as fish traps and other fishing constructions. The comprehensive analysis of wooden artefacts enables not only a detailed reconstruction of woodworking traditions and techniques at the sites, but also the reconstruction of the surrounding landscape, as exemplified by recent studies made at the Zamostje 2 site (Sergiev Posad district, Moscow region, Russia). This article presents the results of these studies. The assemblage of wooden artefacts – with more than 300 items – and fishing structures (fish traps, weirs, and fish screens) found at the Zamostje 2 site currently represents a unique opportunity to assess not only the role of wood in hunter-fisher societies during the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods in the forest zone of eastern Europe, but also the scientific potential of this fragile find material category.

35. Prehistoric fish traps and fishing structures from Zamostje 2, Russian European Plain: archaeological and ethnographical contexts

Abstract

Fish traps and nets documented ethnographically on the Russian European Plain and in Siberia are described and compared with similar archaeological finds from the north and north-west of Russia and the Baltic States of Latvia and Lithuania. We analyse the features they have in common in arder to interpret the fishing structures from Zamostje 2. The site has yielded occupation levels covering the transition from the Mesolithic to the Early and Middle Neolithic. A comparative study of the fish remains from Zamostje 2 and modern species in the Valga and Oka river basins suggests that the greatest diversity of species (11) is found in the earliest Mesolithic level, with only six species recorded far the Late Mesolithic and Early Neolithic. The number of individuals caught also varíes over time, with a steady increase in the capture of cyprinids, which is particularly striking in the last phases of the occupation. [EN] The paper is devoted to the analysis of fishery as one of the most important parts of the economy in the late Mesolithic - early Neolithic periods in Central Russia. The used materials come from the excavation of the multilayer peat-bog site Zamostje 2 (Moscow region, Russia). Different kinds of evidence of fishing were analyzed: fish remains, bone tools (harpoon heads, barbed, fish hooks, knives from elk ribs), wooden artifacts (floats, paddles), finds of wooden constructions - fish traps and fish fence and, finally, coprolites. [EN] Fishing played a fundamental role in the subsistence economy of the Mesolithic and Neolithic inhabitants of Zamostje 2, a site located on the Russian plain (Sergiev Possad, Moscow). Te abundant ichtiofaunal remains and the tools found at the site (harpoons, needle nets, fishhooks and scaling knives) corroborate this importance. In this article, we focus on the consumption of fishhooks through an analysis of the usewear observed on their surfaces. We compare the usewear observed on the archaeological fishhooks with that seen on experimental fishhooks used to capture fish species. We show how some attributes (disposition, quantity and hardness of the fish teeth) influence the nature of the usewear, especially the striations, formed on the surfaces of the fishhooks., [RU] Рыболовство играло важную роль в экономике древних оби-тателей стоянки Замостье 2 в период мезолита и нео лита. Многочисленные остатки рыб и орудия, найденные на сто- янке (гарпуны, иглы для плетения сетей, крючки и ножи для чистки рыбы) — все это свидетельствует в пользу такого предположения. В данной работе основной целью нашего ис-следования является анализ группы рыболовных крючков с точки зрения изучения сохранившихся на поверхности следов использования. [EN] Several ishery constructions were found during investigations on the site Zamostje 2. hree ish-traps made from pine and spruce splinters were discovered during surface excavations. hey dated to the early Neolithic period. Another two constructions made from long pine, spruce and willow splinters were found during underwater prospection in river Dubna bed. hese objects are dated to the late Mesolithic period; their preliminary attribution is a mobile ish-screen. Besides the structures made from wood splinters around 230 vertical piles found during underwater and surface investigations. hey belong to the diferent chronological periods. Some of the piles are linked with ishery constructions; other ones represent remains of separate buildings., [RU] В ходе многолетних исследований на стоянке Замостье 2 были открыты сложные рыболовные конструкции. Три верши из лучин сосны и ели были найдены в ходе наземных раскопок и датируются эпохой раннего неолита. Еще две конструкции из длинных лучин сосны и ивы были обнаружены во время подводных работ в русле реки Дубны и предварительно интерпретируются в качестве переносных заграждений для ловли рыбы. Помимо объектов из расщепленных лучин, в южной части стоянки выявлено 230 вертикальных колов, которые также относятся к разным хронологическим периодам. Abstract

[EN] Zamostje 2 is a river bank site located in the region of Serguev Possad (Russia). This site is constituted by occupations from the late Mesolithic to the middle Neolithic. If no habitat was discovered, structures and many artefacts dealing with ishing practices have been found there. Our attention was drawn by a particular typological set of bone artefacts from Zamostje: narrow transverso-lateral bevel ended tools of which sides compose invariably an angle of 45°. he functional study of around forty pieces had allowed to match them with wood working (Лозов- ская, 1997). However, the variability in the breaks and in the distribution of use-wear patterns makes that kinematics could not be apparently cleared. From these irst results and with the help of target experiments, we carried out the use wear analysis of all the collection that counts more than one hundred of “45° bevelled bone tools”. We expected to specify their function and their connexions with structures dealing with ishing at Zamostje., [RU] Стоянка Замостье 2 расположена на берегу реки Дубны в Сергиево-Посадском р-не Московской области (Россия). Стоянка содержит несколько культурных слоев, датируе- мых в интервале от позднего мезолита до среднего неоли- та. В ходе исследований памятника были найдены рыболо- вецкие конструкции и большое количество артефактов, связанных с рыболовством. В данном случае мы обратили внимание на особую типологическую группу костяных изделий стоянки Замостье 2 — скошенные орудия с рабо- чей кромкой, заостренной под углом 45°. Функциональный анализ сорока орудий позволил соотнести их с обработ- кой дерева (Лозовская, 1997). Тем не менее, вариабельность сломов и характер распространения зон со следами износа не позволяли отчетливо прояснить вопрос о кинематике работы этим орудием. Беря за основу первые результаты и применив целенаправленные эксперименты, мы провели трасологический анализ всей коллекции изделий, которая сейчас насчитывает более сотни орудий с рабочей кромкой под углом 45°. Мы надеемся прояснить их функцию в связи с рыболовными структурами, найденными на стоянке За- мостье 2.

[EN] Experimentation was carried out with bone tools and equipment connected with fishing and processing fish. Experiments with four fish species showed that the specific characteristics of their teeth leave different marks on the fishing hooks. The marks identified on harpoons and knives made from elk ribs and used to scale and gut fish are also described., [ES] En este trabajo presentamos la experimentación llevada a cabo con aperos e instrumentos óseos relacionados con la pesca y el procesado de pescado. La experimentación con cuatro especies de pescado nos ha mostrado que las características específicas de los dientes dejan huellas distintas en los anzuelos. Por otro lado, también se describen las huellas observadas en arpones y cuchillos elaborados en costilla de alce utilizados para descamar y eviscerar pescado.

Abstract

Wooden remains of fishing construction (fish-traps, fish-fence) are rare finds difficult for interpretation, mostly owing to damages and replacing from the original position. At Mesolithic-Neolithic peat site Zamostye 2 a fishery zone were excavated including three fish-traps related with 210 poles driven in the Dubna River bed. Fish-traps represented conic baskets made of tiny pine splinters bound with grass bands, with original length around 2 m. During underwater investigation remains of two more constructions were discovered. According to a series of 14C dates the fishery zone is dated back to the Early Neolithic (the beginning of the 6th millennium BC)

Abstract

[EN] The use ot teeth, both from human and other animals, as instruments for working other raw materials has a wide record at archaeological and ethnographical level. The case study of the present work -the incisive teeth of beaver- is very interesting for the wide geographical territory envolved as well as for the ample chronological interval that relates to the technological development of these tools. The experi-mental work that has been carried out with beaver mandibles had the aim of reproducing the teeth use wear so to be able to utilise this set as a referente collection to compare with archaeological material from Zaostje 2 (Russia). These tools are very common in this area of the Russian plain in all settlements were there are Mesolothic cultural layers overlain by Neolithic deposits., [ES] El uso de los dientes, tanto humanos como de diversos animales, como instrumentos de trabajo tiene un amplio registro tanto a nivel arqueológico como etnográfico. El caso que nos ocupa en este trabajo -los incisivos de castor- resulta llamativo por el amplio territorio geográfi co donde se localizan y el amplio espectro cronológico que ocupa el desarrollo tecnológico de esos instrumentos. La experimentación que hemos llevado a cabo con mandíbulas de castor tenía como objetivo el reproducir huellas de uso en la superfi cie de los incisivos para usarlas de modelos comparativos con los materiales arqueológicos de Zamostje 2 (Rusia). Estos instrumentos son muy comunes en los yacimientos con niveles mesolíticos (con continuidad en los del neolítico) en todo este área geográfi ca de la llanura rusa.
