Urban forests have the potential to sink atmospheric CO2. With the improvement of coverage of vegetation in urban environments, more attention has been paid to the carbon sequestration potential of the urban forest. However, the high fragmentation of urban forests makes it difficult to evaluate their carbon budget on a regional scale. In this study, the GPP-NIRv relationship model was employed to estimate GPP in Suzhou by MODIS, Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 remote sensing data, and to further explore what kind of remote images can figure out the spatial-temporal pattern of GPP in urban forests. We found that the total GPP of the terrestrial ecosystem in Suzhou reached 8.43, 8.48, and 9.30 Tg C yr-1 for MODIS, Landsat-8, and Sentinel-2, respectively. Monthly changes of GPP were able to be derived by MODIS and Sentinel-2, with two peaks in April and July. According to Sentinel-2, urban forests accounted for the majority of total GPP, with an average of about 44.63%, which was larger than the results from GPP products with coarser resolutions. Additionally, it is clear from the high-resolution images that the decline of GPP in May was due to human activities such as the rotation of wheat and rice crops and the pruning of urban forests. Our results improve the understanding of the contribution of the urban forest to the carbon budget and highlight the importance of high-resolution remote sensing images for estimating urban carbon assimilation. Herein, we report a facile strategy for construction of branched antisense DNA and small interfering RNA (siRNA) co‐assembled nanoplatform for combined gene silencing in vitro and in vivo. In our design, the branched antisense can efficiently capture siRNA with 3′ overhangs through DNA–RNA hybridization. After being equipped with an active targeting group and an endosomal escape peptide by host–guest interaction, the tailored nucleic acid nanostructure functions efficiently as both delivery carrier and therapeutic cargo, which is released by endogenous RNase H digestion. The multifunctional nucleic acid nanosystem elicits an efficient inhibition of tumor growth based on the combined gene silencing of the tumor‐associated gene polo‐like kinase 1 (PLK1). Vegetation phenology is sensitive to climate change and, as such, is often regarded as an indicator of climate change. It is a common practice to extract vegetation phenological indicators based on satellite remote sensing data. In this study, we used the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Study (GIMMS) Third-Generation normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI3G) to investigate temporal and spatial changes in phenology in Northeast Asia. Based on the maximum rate of change in the NDVI and dynamic threshold, we used the Asymmetric Gaussian model, Double Logistic method, and Savitzky-Golay filter to extract the start of the growing season (SOS), the end of the growing season (EOS), and the length of the growing season (LOS), respectively, along the North–South Transect of Northeast Asia (NSTNEA) from 1982 to 2014. We then compared the differences in SOS, EOS, and LOS and considered their spatio-temporal dynamics and relationship with temperature. The results show that the Asymmetric Gaussian model has the highest stability among the three methods. Dynamic thresholds corresponding to the maximum change rate of NDVI were mainly between 0.5 and 0.6. From 1982 to 2014, the SOS in the NSTNEA region occurred approximately 0.19 days earlier each year; the trends in EOS and LOS were not significant. In general, temperature and latitude have a strong linear relationship, both of which significantly impact vegetation phenology in the NSTNEA region. DNA nanotechnology has been employed in the construction of self‐assembled nano‐biomaterials with uniform size and shape for various biological applications, such as bioimaging, diagnosis, or therapeutics. Herein, recent successful efforts to utilize multifunctional DNA origami nanoplatforms as drug‐delivery vehicles are reviewed. Diagnostic and therapeutic strategies based on gold nanorods, chemotherapeutic drugs, cytosine–phosphate–guanine, functional proteins, gene drugs, and their combinations for optoacoustic imaging, photothermal therapy, chemotherapy, immunological therapy, gene therapy, and coagulation‐based therapy are summarized. Highlights • The effects of N deposition on global WUE were evaluated with IBIS model. • WUE changed in several N deposition hotspots owing to larger change in GPP than in ET. • N deposition has significantly increased the response ratio of WUE to elevated CO 2 in some regions. Abstract Nitrogen (N) deposition changes the availability of N in ecosystems and regulates carbon and water cycles, including ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE). In recent decades, N deposition has been increasing rapidly, especially at several hotspots in China, Europe and the U.S. In this study, a process-based terrestrial ecosystem model, IBIS (Integrated BIosphere Simulator), was used to simulate the effects of N deposition on WUE globally. The results indicated that increasing N deposition led to a global increase in WUE of 0.005 g C kg−1 H 2 O on average over the first 10 years of the 21st century. The effects of N deposition on WUE were more evident in certain hotspots than in other parts of the world. The effect of N deposition on gross primary productivity (GPP) determined the change in WUE. In particular, high N deposition led to decreased ET and consequently increased the WUE in southeastern China. Moreover, increased N deposition has significantly enhanced the WUE in response to elevated CO 2 in southeastern China, indicating the importance of N deposition in regulating the terrestrial carbon cycle. In contrast to the well-studied asymmetric catalyzed synthesis of tetrahydroquinolines, the asymmetric methodologies toward 3,4-dihydroquinolin-2-ones are quite rare. Herein, the first asymmetric cascade reaction is reported between ethynyl benzoxazinanones and mixed-anhydrides generated from aryl acetic acids and pivaloyl chloride, based on synergistic catalysis. This allowed the formation of attractive 3,4-dihydroquinolin-2-ones bearing two vicinal chiral centers at C3 and C4 in high yields with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities. A plausible chiral induction model for this reaction was proposed. Increased nitrogen (N) deposition and land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) have influenced the terrestrial ecosystem carbon budget in China over the past few decades. However, the coupling effects of N deposition and LUCC on the carbon cycle remain unclear. This study first evaluated the effects of LUCC on N deposition based on estimated N deposition data from NO column remote sensing data and the GlobeLand30 LUCC dataset, and then assessed the coupling effects of N deposition and LUCC on carbon budgets in China based on a terrestrial ecosystem process-based model. The results showed that the average rate of increase in N deposition in China was 0.35 Tg N yr (Tg = 10 g), which caused net primary production (NPP) and net ecosystem production (NEP) to rise by 92.2 Tg C yr and 46.9 Tg C yr, respectively. The effects of LUCC reduced N deposition by 0.21 Gg N yr (Gg = 10 g). The land changed from forest to cropland had the greatest rate of increase in N deposition among all types of land-cover change. Changes from cropland to forest slowed the rate of N deposition increase the most. Generally, the change in N deposition resulting from LUCC reduced NPP and NEP by 0.7 and 0.4 Gg C yr, respectively. Compared with the total effects of N deposition on NPP and NEP, N deposition changes caused by LUCC had a limited aggregate effect on the C budget. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Owing to human activity, global nitrogen (N) cycles have been altered. In the past 100 years, global N deposition has increased. Currently, the monitoring and estimating of N deposition and the evaluation of its effects on global carbon budgets are the focus of many researchers. NO2columns retrieved by space-borne sensors provide us with a new way of exploring global N cycles and these have the ability to estimate N deposition. However, the time range limitation of NO2columns makes the estimation of long timescale N deposition difficult. In this study we used ground-based NOxemission data to expand the density of NO2columns, and 40 years of N deposition (1970–2009) was inverted using the multivariate linear model with expanded NO2columns. The dynamic of N deposition was examined in both global and biome scales. The results show that the average N deposition was 0.34 g N m–2year–1in the 2000s, which was an increase of 38.4% compared with the 1970s’. The total N deposition in different biomes is unbalanced. N deposition is only 38.0% of the global total in forest biomes; this is made up of 25.9%, 11.3, and 0.7% in tropical, temperate, and boreal forests, respectively. As N-limited biomes, there was little increase of N deposition in boreal forests. However, N deposition has increased by a total of 59.6% in tropical forests and croplands, which are N-rich biomes. Accurate representation of photosynthetic capacity and its seasonal variations is critical for modeling carbon sequestration of cropland ecosystems through photosynthesis. Previous studies indicated that the maximum carboxylation rate at 25 °C (V cmax25) is the key determinant of photosynthetic capacity and can be mapped according to leaf nitrogen (N) and chlorophyll (Chl) contents. However, whether relationships of V cmax25 with leaf nitrogen and chlorophyll contents in cropland ecosystems change over the whole growing season remain unclear. To address this question, we conducted intensive field campaigns in winter wheat and paddy rice farmlands of Eastern China, with leaf V cmax25 , the maximum electron transport rate at 25 °C (J max25), N, and Chl measured every 7 to 10 days from the tillering stage to maturity. Results showed that V cmax25 and J max25 varied significantly during the growing seasons and maximized at flowering stages. For both winter wheat and paddy rice, Chl a (Chl content at the area unit) showed significantly different relationships with V cmax25 pre- and post- flowering while N a (N content at the area unit) did not. When different empirical models were used for pre- flowering and post- flowering stages, V cmax25 estimated from Chl a was closer to observations (R2 = 0.875, RMSE = 9.479 µmol m−2 s−1) than that estimated from N a (R2 = 0.565, RMSE = 17.718 µmol m−2 s−1). The findings in this study imply that the combination of remotely sensed leaf Chl a content and phenology would improve the mapping of V cmax25 for crops at regional and even global scales. Global nitrogen deposition has increased over the past 100 years. Monitoring and simulation studies of  nitrogen deposition have evaluated nitrogen deposition at both the global and regional scale. With the development of remote-sensing instruments, tropospheric NO2column density retrieved from Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) and Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY) sensors now provides us with a new opportunity to understand changes in reactive nitrogen in the atmosphere. The concentration of NO2in the atmosphere has a significant effect on atmospheric nitrogen deposition. According to the general nitrogen deposition calculation method, we use the principal component regression method to evaluate global nitrogen deposition based on global NO2column density and meteorological data. From the accuracy of the simulation, about 70% of the land area of the Earth passed a significance test of regression. In addition, NO2column density has a significant influence on regression results over 44% of global land. The simulated results show that global average nitrogen deposition was 0.34 g m−2yr−1from 1996 to 2009 and is increasing at about 1% per year. Our simulated results show that China, Europe, and the USA are the three hotspots of nitrogen deposition according to previous research findings. In this study, Southern Asia was found to be another hotspot of nitrogen deposition (about 1.58 g m−2yr−1and maintaining a high growth rate). As nitrogen deposition increases, the number of regions threatened by high nitrogen deposits is also increasing. In terrestrial ecosystems, leaves are aggregated into different spatial structures and their spatial distribution is non-random. Clumping index (CI) is a key canopy structural parameter, characterizing the extent to which leaf deviates from the random distribution. To assess leaf clumping effects on global terrestrial ET, we used a global leaf area index (LAI) map and the latest version of global CI product derived from MODIS BRDF data as well as the Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator (BEPS) to estimate global terrestrial ET. The results show that global terrestrial ET in 2015 was 511.9 ± 70.1 mm yr−1 for Case I, where the true LAI and CI are used. Compared to this baseline case, (1) global terrestrial ET is overestimated by 4.7% for Case II where true LAI is used ignoring clumping; (2) global terrestrial ET is underestimated by 13.0% for Case III where effective LAI is used ignoring clumping. Among all plant functional types (PFTs), evergreen needleleaf forests were most affected by foliage clumping for ET estimation in Case II, because they are most clumped with the lowest CI. Deciduous broadleaf forests are affected by leaf clumping most in Case III because they have both high LAI and low CI compared to other PFTs. The leaf clumping effects on ET estimation in both Case II and Case III is robust to the errors in major input parameters. Herein, we report a DNA origami‐based CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system for efficient gene therapy in vivo. In our design, a PAM‐rich region precisely organized on the surface of DNA origami can easily recruit and load sgRNA/Cas9 complex by PAM‐guided assembly and pre‐designed DNA/RNA hybridization. After loading the sgRNA/Cas9 complex, the DNA origami can be further rolled up by the locking strands with a disulfide bond. With the incorporation of DNA aptamer and influenza hemagglutinin (HA) peptide, the cargo‐loaded DNA origami can realize the targeted delivery and effective endosomal escape. After reduction by GSH, the opened DNA origami can release the sgRNA/Cas9 complex by RNase H cleavage to achieve a pronounced gene editing of a tumor‐associated gene for gene therapy in vivo. Over the past 100 years, human activity has greatly changed the rate of atmospheric N (nitrogen) deposition in terrestrial ecosystems, resulting in N saturation in some regions of the world. The contribution of N saturation to the global carbon budget remains uncertain due to the complicated nature of C-N (carbon-nitrogen) interactions and diverse geography. Although N deposition is included in most terrestrial ecosystem models, the effect of N saturation is frequently overlooked. In this study, the IBIS (Integrated BIosphere Simulator) was used to simulate the global-scale effects of N saturation during the period 1961-2009. The results of this model indicate that N saturation reduced global NPP (Net Primary Productivity) and NEP (Net Ecosystem Productivity) by 0.26 and 0.03 Pg C yr−1, respectively. The negative effects of N saturation on carbon sequestration occurred primarily in temperate forests and grasslands. In response to elevated CO2 levels, global N turnover slowed due to increased biomass growth, resulting in a decline in soil mineral N. These changes in N cycling reduced the impact of N saturation on the global carbon budget. However, elevated N deposition in certain regions may further alter N saturation and C-N coupling. This study detected the long-term trends in NO 2 concentrations in China from 1997 to 2016 based on the NO 2 columns from GOME, SCIAMACHY, and GOME-2A. Both differences in the time-overlapped NO 2 columns from GOME vs. SCIAMACHAY and SCIAMACHAY vs. GOME-2A showed seasonal variations, and the annual NO 2 columns from GOME were 0.9% higher than those from SCIAMACHY, which exceeded that from GOME-2A by 14%. The long-term trends of the NO 2 columns on a provincial scale could be simulated by cubic models (0.60 < R 2  < 0.96, p < 0.05) and presented three shapes: first decreasing then increasing and decreasing again; first decreasing then increasing; and continuously decreasing. The peak years of NO 2 columns in 17 provinces occurred in 2011 and 2012. These trends in NO 2 columns were determined by the economic developments and enacted air quality policies in nearly all the provinces except for Xizang and Qinghai Provinces, where the trends were determined by natural NO x emission sources. In detail, the panel data analysis showed that the simulated model had fixed effects, and the thermal power generation, consumption of diesel oil in agriculture, passenger traffic by highways, and freight traffic by highways significantly increased NO 2 , while the air quality policies in the 12th five-year plan decreased NO 2 columns from 1997 to 2016. Observations of carbon monoxide (CO) retrieved from Scanning Imaging Absorption SpectroMeter for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY), Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT), and Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) are compared in this article. To better validate the retrieved data from SCIAMCHY, AIRS, and MOPITT, six surface stations at different locations and with various elevations were chosen. The results show these three instruments can all reflect CO spatial distribution well and show same temporal variations of CO concentration as well as six surface station measurements. MOPITT and AIRS have similar retrieval results with correlation coefficients being mostly over 0.70, except for a sixth field station on Crozet Island. The three satellites all have the ability to monitor CO concentration change on land, but SCIAMCHY results show a relatively larger bias than MOPITT and AIRS in low CO concentration areas because of systematic error. A highly efficient cascade sequence for syntheses of 2,3-disubstituted imidazo[1,2- a ]pyridines with exclusive regioselectivity in moderate to excellent yields has been developed. This cascade was initiated through propargylation of 2-aminopyridines at pyridine-nitrogen with propargyl alcohol derivatives using Cu(II)-Pybox as catalyst and followed by an intramolecular cyclization and isomerization. Simple Summary: Human activities have been found to be the major factor driving the changes in terrestrial ecosystems. However, large uncertainties remain in assessing the impact of human activities on terrestrial ecosystems. In consequence, we established a quantitative indicator based on terrestrial potential and actual net primary productivity (NPP), as well as the forage harvest NPP, to better reveal the spatiotemporal changes of grassland ecosystems in response to human activities in eastern Inner Mongolia, and to further explore the relationship between human activities and grassland degradation in typical ecologically fragile areas. The quantitative indicator showed that NPP loss induced by human activities is weakening in the study area, and a positive relationship between human activities and grassland degradation was found. The results of this study will provide a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the grassland degradation influenced by human activities, and a method reference for similar research. Global enhanced human activities have deeply influenced grassland ecosystems. Quantifying the impact of human activities on grasslands is crucial to understanding the grassland dynamic change mechanism, such as grassland degradation, and to establishing ecosystem protection measures. In this study, potential net primary productivity (PNPP), actual NPP (ANPP), and the forage harvest NPP (HNPP) were employed to establish the human activities index (HAI) to reveal the spatiotemporal changes of the effects of human activities on grassland ecosystems in eastern Inner Mongolia from 2000 to 2017, and to further explore the relationship between human activities and grassland degradation. The results showed that the total average PNPP, ANPP, and HNPP of grasslands in eastern Inner Mongolia were 187.2 Tg C yr−1, 152.3 Tg C yr−1, and 8.9 Tg C yr−1, respectively, during the period of 2000 to 2017. The HAI exhibited a clear decreasing trend during the study period, with annual mean values ranging from 0.75 to 0.47, which indicates that the NPP loss induced by human activities is weakening, and this trend is dominated by the difference between potential NPP and actual NPP. About 42.4% of the study area was non-degraded grassland, and the declining grassland degradation index (GDI) indicated that the degradation grade in eastern Inner Mongolia improved from moderate to light degradation. A positive relationship was found between HAI and GDI. Atmospheric methane (CH4) is an important greenhouse gas that can reflect variations of CH4 emissions and sinks. This study aimed to detect spatial and temporal variations of atmospheric CH4 concentrations in China during 2003–2021 based on CH4 column-averaged dry-air mole fraction (XCH4) products from three satellites, namely, Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY), Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT), and Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P). The results revealed that XCH4 observed from three satellites showed high agreement in spatiotemporal variations and demonstrated good consistency with ground station measurements. The correlation coefficients (r) between the three satellites were 0.72 and 0.73, and the correlation coefficients for the ground stations were 0.79, 0.66, 0.03, 0.21, 0.70, and 0.80. The spatial distribution of XCH4 in China was generally high in the east and low in the west and close to that of CH4 emissions, indicating that CH4 emission sources dominated the spatial variations of atmospheric XCH4. From 2003 to 2006, XCH4 remained stable with an annual growth rate of 0.51 ppb·yr−1 and then abruptly increased with an overall growth rate of 6.96 ppb·yr−1. There were obvious seasonal changes in XCH4, with peaks in autumn and summer and nadir in winter and spring. These seasonal variations of XCH4 were related to CH4 emissions from rice planting. Rice cultivation areas generally had high XCH4 concentrations, and the growth cycle of rice plants significantly contributed to seasonal variations of XCH4 in the main rice planting areas. Abstract: Since wetlands are the largest natural sources of atmospheric CH4, it is important to estimate the CH4 emissions from natural wetlands at regional scale and over a long time period. The annual CH4 efflux from temperate natural wetlands excluding water surface in China was estimated, based on atmospheric CH4 concentrations from SCIAMACHY/ENVISAT. The atmospheric CH4 concentrations showed obvious seasonal cycles, and CH4 emission from natural wetlands dominated the temporal variations of CH4 concentrations in north China, accounting for about 67.94% of the variations of CH4 concentrations. The chemical transport model, MOZART-4 (Model for Ozone and Related Chemical Tracers, version 4), was used to simulate the space-borne CH4 column concentrations to the surface level, and then the relationship between surface concentrations and emissions of CH4 from natural wetlands was simulated by a linear regression model. The results showed that the estimated annual budget of CH4 emission from natural wetlands in the temperate zone of China was about 4.76 Tg CH4, which was within the range of 2.38–4.91 Tg CH4 estimated by spatial distribution of wetland and the published CH4 release fluxes during the 1990s–2000s. Models are an important tool to predict Earth system dynamics. An accurate prediction of future states of ecosystems depends on not only model structures but also parameterizations. Model parameters can be constrained by data assimilation. However, applications of data assimilation to ecology are restricted by highly technical requirements such as model-dependent coding. To alleviate this technical burden, we developed a model-independent data assimilation (MIDA) module. MIDA works in three steps including data preparation, execution of data assimilation, and visualization. The first step prepares prior ranges of parameter values, a defined number of iterations, and directory paths to access files of observations and models. The execution step calibrates parameter values to best fit the observations and estimates the parameter posterior distributions. The final step automatically visualizes the calibration performance and posterior distributions. MIDA is model independent, and modelers can use MIDA for an accurate and efficient data assimilation in a simple and interactive way without modification of their original models. We applied MIDA to four types of ecological models: the data assimilation linked ecosystem carbon (DALEC) model, a surrogate-based energy exascale earth system model: the land component (ELM), nine phenological models and a stand-alone biome ecological strategy simulator (BiomeE). The applications indicate that MIDA can effectively solve data assimilation problems for different ecological models. Additionally, the easy implementation and model-independent feature of MIDA breaks the technical barrier of applications of data–model fusion in ecology. CH4 (methane) is an important greenhouse gas that has a significant impact on the formation of, and change in, the global climate. Through the development of remote sensing technology, a series of remote sensing detectors to monitor CH4 sources and sinks have been launched into space. Although a series of studies have been conducted around the CH4 concentration retrieved by AIRS (The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder instrument), SCIAMACHY (The Scanning Imaging Absorption spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography instrument), and GOSAT (The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite), there have been few comprehensive comparative studies between these three satellite results and ground-based data. In this article, the correlation coefficient, root-mean-square deviation (RMSD), and bias are used to evaluate the CH4 retrieved from satellite data. The results reveal that: AIRS can reflect the distribution and changes of CH4 all over the world. The space coverage of GOSAT is focused between 60°S to 60°N, and the correlation of GOSAT with land surface stations is generally better than that with ocean surface stations. The space coverage of SCIAMACHY is between GOSAT and AIRS. Though SCIAMACHY data show a poor consistency with surface measurements, SCIAMACHY can also reflect the spatial and temporal dynamic distribution of CH4 around the world to a certain extent. Abstract The Qinling Mountain Range (QMR) in central China encompasses innumerable Paleolithic sites. The hominin settlement in the QMR is comparable with that in the Nihewan Basin in northern China. The recorded information on the loess deposition in the QMR include both hominin remains and environmental changes. Since 2004, geological, geomorphological, archaeological, and chronological investigations were conducted by our team. By systematically using luminescence, paleomagnetic, and 26Al/10Be burial dating methods to obtain age controls, and by correlating the pedostratigraphy and magnetic susceptibility of the Luochuan loess section, we established the loess–paleosol sequence and chronology of the lithic artifact levels for 35 Paleolithic sites and spots in the QMR. This work remarkable found shifts from glacial-to interglacial-driving hominin settlement patterns. During the stage between 1.2 and 0.7 Ma, large drying events, such as L15 (MIS 38) and L9 (MIS 22, 23 and 24), may have driven hominin migrations when the Loess Plateau was depopulated; moreover, the southern QMR was a glacial refugium. During the stage after ∼0.60 Ma, the contrasts between glacial and interglacial scales are the greatest; furthermore, longer and warmer humid interglacial environments were dominant. S5 (MIS 13, 14, 15) and S1 (MIS 5) interglacial periods provided the optimal environments for hominin settlement and dispersal. On the basis of investigations, we also found that the hominin settlement is relatively continuous from ∼1.20 Ma to ∼0.05 Ma in the QMR. The human occupation of the QMR decreased considerably after ∼0.05 Ma, probably because of changes in climate and human adaptations. Remote sensing technology has great potential to expand the observation of ground-level nitrogen deposition from local monitoring sites to a regional scale, with high spatial and temporal resolutions. A new methodology is developed to estimate the spatial distribution of monthly bulk nitrogen deposition on a regional scale, based on precipitation amounts and HNO 3 and aerosol nitrate (NO 3 − ) columns, derived from OMI NO 2 columns and the relationship of NO 2 , HNO 3 and NO 3 − from MOZART. The accuracy assessment shows that the proposed model has achieved a reasonably high predictive power for monthly NO 3 − -N deposition (slope = 0.96, intercept = 0.35, R = 0.83, RMSE = 0.72) across China. The spatial NO 3 − -N deposition shows a significant gradient from industrial areas to undeveloped regions, ranging from 0.01 to 26.76 kg N ha − 1 y − 1 with an average of 5.77 kg N ha − 1 y − 1 over China during 2010–2012. The bulk NO 3 − -N deposition shows a clear seasonal variation, with high depositions occurring in the warm season (March–November) and peaking in July and August, and low bulk NO 3 − -N deposition appearing in winter (December–February). Climate change has significantly influenced the productivity of terrestrial ecosystems through water cycles. Water use efficiency (WUE) is an important indicator for understanding how water couples with the carbon cycle. Abiotic factors such as climatic factors and CO 2 concentration have been investigated to understand the mechanisms involved in the coupled carbon-water cycle of terrestrial ecosystems in response to climate change. However, the effects of biotic factors on WUE are less clear. By analyzing 66 site-years of flux and meteorological data obtained from 8 temperate deciduous broadleaf forest sites across North America and Europe, we found that ecosystem-scale WUE (defined here as the ratio of gross primary production (GPP) to evapotranspiration (ET)) in the spring significantly increased with the advance of the flux-based photosynthetic onset (FPO), mainly because an earlier FPO could lead to a steeper increase in GPP than in ET. However, the advance of FPO probably reduced summer WUE as a result of the enhancement of water stress by ET in the spring in temperate deciduous broadleaf forest. Our results also implied that spring warming had an indirectly positive effect on WUE through advancing spring phenology, but such a positive effect will likely weaken once the sensitivity of spring phenology to warming decreases as reported. Here, we argue that phenology, which exerts critical biotic control over most ecological processes, plays a larger role than expected in the regulation of the seasonal WUE and cannot be ignored in earth system models. Particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter of <2.5 μm (PM2.5) has become the primary air pollutant in most major cities in China. Some studies have indicated that there is a positive correlation between the aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and surface-level PM2.5concentration. In order to estimate PM2.5concentration over large areas, a model relating the concentration of PM2.5and AOT has been established. The scale height of aerosol and relative humidity as well as the effect of surface temperature and wind velocity were introduced to enhance the model. 2013 full year Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) AOT data and ground measurements of the PM2.5concentration in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region were used to fit a seasonal multivariate linear equation relating PM2.5concentration and AOT, and the accuracy of the model has been determined. When comparing MODIS-estimated PM2.5with the measurements from ground monitoring stations during spring, summer, autumn and winter, we found theR2values were 0.45, 0.45, 0.37, and 0.31, respectively. Based on this model, the spatial distribution of PM2.5concentration during four typical haze events sampled by seasons was derived, and displayed with the backward air trajectories calculated using the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. We undertook a preliminary analysis about the source of surface-level PMs and the process of its accumulation and dispersion during the haze episodes by analysing the effect of terrain and topography in the specific location of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region. The spatial distribution of the PM2.5concentration showed that the high value region was generally in the southeast of the study area, which approximately overlapped an area of lower vegetation coverage, and the temporal variation of PM2.5concentration indicated that the air pollution was more severe during winter and spring than summer and autumn. The results of the analysis of backward air trajectories suggested that the hazy weather in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region was mainly caused by unfavourable terrain and weather conditions. Ecological geographic regions, also called eco-regions, can be used to divide a remotely sensed image, which is helpful for reducing the complexity of land cover types within eco-regions and for improving the classification accuracy of land cover. In this case study in China, we improved a method of ecological geographic regionalization that is more suitable for remote sensing mapping of regional land cover, and we obtained new eco-regions. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and k-means clustering were adopted in the ecological geographic regionalization using both seasonal remotely-sensed vegetation information and environmental data including climate, elevation and soil features. Our results show that the combination of seasonal vegetation information and the CCA performed well in the selection of the dominant environmental factor of the biogeographic pattern, and it can be used as regionalization indicators of eco-regions. We found that thermal factors are the most important driving forces of the biogeographic pattern in China, which followed by moisture factors. Two global land cover products (MODIS MCD12C1 and GlobCover) were used to assess our eco-regions. The results show that our eco-regions performed better than that of a previous study regarding the complexity of land cover types, such as in the number of types and the proportional area of the major/secondary type. These results indicate that the method of ecological geographic regionalization, which is based on environmental factors associated with seasonal vegetation features, is effective for reducing the regional complexity of land cover. The present work aims to detect bamboo expansion and its impact on carbon storage in a thick forest in the most recent 30 years. The research area is the national nature reserve of Tianmushan, Zhejiang Province, China, and the present paper monitored bamboo expansion from 1984 to 2015. Multi-spectral band and vegetation indices from Landsat images in summer and winter are used combined to improve the accuracy of detection using a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Expansion of bamboo over this period is evident. Total expansion is 161%, the fastest annual rate being 11.6%. However, over recent decades the growth of bamboo has been inhibited by human activity and the total area has decreased by 21%. Evergreen broadleaf forest is the most vulnerable to invasion by bamboo at a ratio of about 65%, and this expanding trend has been brought under effective control. Carbon storage was estimated using sample plot surveys and modelling based on key ecological forests. According to our estimation using carbon storage models, the total carbon storage of Tianmushan has declined by circa 4.7% due to bamboo expansion in the past three decades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A systematic dataset of an observation network on a national scale has been organized to investigate the spatial distribution of bulk sulfur (S) deposition (S dep ) throughout China during 2000–2013, representing by far the most detailed data set to track the bulk sulfur deposition throughout China since 2000. Such a dataset is needed for ecosystem studies and for developing emission control policies. Bulk S dep values showed great variations, ranging from 2.17 to 70.55 kg ha −1 y −1 , with an average of 22.99 kg ha −1 y −1 . The average rate of bulk S dep located in East Coastal region (35.97 kg ha −1 y −1 ), Middle Yangtze region (57.90 kg ha −1 y −1 ), Middle Yellow River region (23.42 kg ha −1 y −1 ), North Coastal region (42.19 kg ha −1 y −1 ), Northeast region (34.28 kg ha −1 y −1 ), South Coastal region (36.97 kg S ha −1 y −1 ), Southwest region (33.85 kg ha −1 y −1 ) was 4.50, 7.24, 2.93, 5.28, 4.29, 4.63 and 4.24 times than that in Northwest region (7.99 kg ha −1 y −1 ). Bulk S dep over China was mainly from fossil fuel combustion (76.96%), biomass burning (7.64%), crust (6.22%), aged sea salt (5.48%) and agriculture (3.68%). A systematic observation network on a national scale should be established to conduct a long-term monitoring atmospheric S dep (including wet and dry deposition), based on exiting ecological stations administrated by different departments in China. Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition (Ndep), an important component of the global N cycle, has increased sharply in recent decades in China. Although there were already some studies on Ndep on a national scale, there were some gaps on the magnitude and the spatial patterns of Ndep. In this study, a national-scale Ndep pattern was constructed based on 139 published papers from 2003 to 2014 and the effects of precipitation (P), energy consumption (E) and N fertilizer use (FN) on spatial patterns of Ndep were analyzed. The wet deposition flux of NH4+-N, NO3--N and total Ndep was 6.83, 5.35 and 12.18 kg ha-1 a-1, respectively. Ndep exhibited a decreasing gradient from southeast to northwest of China. Through accuracy assessment of the spatial Ndep distribution and comparisons with other studies, the spatial Ndep distribution by Lu and Tian and this study both gained high accuracy. A strong exponential function was found between P and Ndep, FN and Ndep and E and Ndep, and P and FN had higher contribution than E on the spatial variation of Ndep. Fossil fuel combustion was the main contributor for NO3--N (86.0%) and biomass burning contributed 5.4% on the deposition of NO3--N. The ion of NH4+ was mainly from agricultural activities (85.9%) and fossil fuel combustion (6.0%). Overall, Ndep in China might be considerably affected by the high emissions of NOx and NH3 from fossil fuel combustion and agricultural activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Satellite observations of carbon dioxide (CO2) are important because of their potential for improving the scientific understanding of global carbon cycle processes and budgets. We present an analysis of the column-averaged dry air mole fractions of CO2(denoted XCO2) of the Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Cartography (SCIAMACHY) retrievals, which were derived from a satellite instrument with relatively long-term records (2003–2009) and with measurements sensitive to the near surface. The spatial-temporal distributions of remotely sensed XCO2have significant spatial heterogeneity with about 6–8% variations (367–397 ppm) during 2003–2009, challenging the traditional view that the spatial heterogeneity of atmospheric CO2is not significant enough (<4%) to have any large effect on terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycles. By comparison with surface measurements from the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) GLOBALVIEW network, significant statistical relationships between XCO2and surface CO2were found for major ecosystems, with the exception of tropical forest. In addition, when compared with a simulated terrestrial carbon uptake from the Integrated Biosphere Simulator (IBIS) and the Emissions Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGAR) carbon emission inventory, the latitudinal gradient of XCO2seasonal amplitude was influenced by the combined effect of terrestrial carbon uptake, carbon emission, and atmospheric transport, suggesting no direct implications for terrestrial carbon sinks. From the investigation of the growth rate of XCO2we found that the increase of CO2concentration was dominated by temperature in the northern hemisphere (20–90°N) and by precipitation in the southern hemisphere (20–90°S), with the major contribution to global average occurring in the northern hemisphere. These findings indicated that the satellite measurements of atmospheric CO2improve not only the estimations of atmospheric inversion, but also the understanding of the terrestrial ecosystem carbon dynamics and its feedback to atmospheric CO2. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) is a principal indicator used to describe the atmospheric condition and effect of aerosols on radiative transfer in the Earth’s atmosphere. In this study, the spatial-temporal variation of AOD of the Yangtze Delta during 2000–2011 and the impact of land cover were studied. The results show that Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) AOD was in good agreement with data obtained from six ground-based Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) sun photometers (R > 0.75). The AOD over the Yangtze Delta presented an obvious one year cycle variation from 2000 to 2011. The largest value often appeared in May or June, and the smallest often appeared in December or January. The AOD over main cities has increased gradually over the years. The AOD over urban areas increased faster than that in rural areas. A change of land-use/cover leads to a change of AOD. Areas of land-use/cover with increased intense human activity leads to changes in higher AOD whereas an increase in forested areas leads to an AOD change to a lower value. The spatial and temporal characters of ground-level NO2concentration over eastern China were retrieved from the monthly averaged tropospheric NO2column densities from Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME, data used in this study are from April 1996 to December 2002) and Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY, data used in this study are from January 2003 to December 2011) measurements. Together with the NO2concentration and the dry deposition velocity maps of eastern China, the fluxes of NO2dry deposition were estimated for three specific regions. The results indicated that the surface NO2concentration in eastern China increased dramatically from 1996 to 2011, and it showed distinct regional and seasonal variational characteristics. The highest concentration occurred in winter while the lowest occurred in summer. There was also variation in the spatial distribution with the peak value of NO2concentration appearing in the plains of north China (R1), the Yangtze River delta (R2), and the Pearl River delta (R3). A sharp increase of NO2concentration appeared in R1 and R2, while it was invariant or showed an obvious decrease in R3 during the period of 1996–2011. Furthermore, we compared the NO2dry deposition fluxes estimated from the ground-level NO2concentration and the dry deposition velocity of NO2with the mass concentration of NO2dry deposition that, measured from the control experiments and by consulting the published literature, showed a significant correlation (P < 0.001) and had a highRvalue (R = 0.73). The results also indicated that the NO2dry deposition fluxes increased over eastern China, with a maximum value of 8.25 kg N ha−1 yr−1from 1996 to 2011 in R3, while the value was characterized by fluxes of less than 2.27 kg N ha−1 yr−1in R2. When comparing the NO2dry deposition over different land covers, the values distinctly peaked over artificial surfaces and evergreen forests, with maximum values of 10.07 and 9.49 kg N ha−1yr−1in R1, 5.05 and 4.94 kg N ha−1 yr−1in R2, and 20.95 and 23.15 kg N ha−1 yr−1in R3. China has the largest reactive nitrogen deposition worldwide. Understanding the change of nitrogen deposition and its socioeconomic drivers in China is crucial for the function and sustainability of regional and global ecosystems. Here we presented satellite-derived nitrogen deposition constrained with the national ground-based measurements over China. We found that oxidized nitrogen deposition peaked at 7.0 kg N ha−1 in 2012, then decreased to 6.2 kg N ha−1 in 2017. In contrast, reduced nitrogen deposition increased continuously, and reached 12.6 kg N ha−1 in 2017. The Chinese Clean Air Act is responsible for the reduction of oxidized nitrogen emissions, while there is no current effective control policy for ammonia emissions in place resulting in reduced nitrogen deposition reaching levels of approximately twice that of oxidized nitrogen in 2017. The ratio of reduced to oxidized nitrogen deposition decreased from 1.30 in 2008 to 1.08 in 2011, while this ratio began to increase from 1.08 in 2011 to 1.56 in 2017. This suggests reduced nitrogen deposition would become more important in the air quality and their ecological consequences in the future. The total nitrogen deposition in China was about 3–4 times that in the US and Europe. The policy of controlling nitrogen pollution is urgent, especially for reducing ammonia emissions, while ensuring the sustainable production of agriculture and maintaining food security. The influence of enhanced nitrogen (N) deposition on rice ecosystems was evaluated across China using the DNDC (DeNitrification-DeComposition) model. The simulated grain, leaf, stem, root and total biomass had good consistency with the ground measurements in controlled experiments, with absolute relative errors of 4.5, 7.3, 7.7, 7.3 and 4.7%, respectively. On a national scale, the absolute relative errors of the measured and simulated early, late and single cropping rice was 2.2, 6.6 and 5.9%, respectively. The N deposition increased rice yield accounted for 0.6% of the national rice production. Under the current fertilization conditions, The N deposition was barely absorbed and utilized for rice growth (only accounted for 1.8% of the N deposition). About 57.7% of the N deposition remained in the soil as inorganic and organic forms, and the other 40.5% of the N deposition was emitted to the environment, as nitrogen oxide emissions (24.8%), ammonia volatilization (5.6%), leaching and runoff (10.1%).
