In response to the report of Carreras‐Presas et al. (2020) in which they present 3 cases with vesico‐bullous oral lesions associated with SARS‐Cov‐2 infection and with very interesting findings, however we cannot consider the possibility that findings be intrinsic related to COVID‐19 disease. The first two cases presented did not have laboratory confirmation of COVID‐19 infection, but the authors reported that these patients had compatible signs and symptoms.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-10-01 A nine-year-old girl with of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in use of methotrexate complained of a self-bleeding ulcerated lesion exhibiting a red surface in the lower lip. Pyogenic granuloma was confirmed by histopathological analysis. After the 7th and 15th days, the lip where biopsy had been done exhibited a deficient healing. The case was discussed with the physician for temporary suspension of methotrexate. Complete wound healing of the biopsied site occurred after temporary interruption of the medication. Wound healing after methotrexate temporary suspension allowed concluding that the drug delayed surgical wound healing was a consequence of drug cytotoxicity. Cases of OSCC diagnosed between 1984 and 2010 were analyzed. The inclusion criteria for the present study were the availability of detailed clinical findings and a diagnosis of the disease through exfoliative cytology and histopathology. The cases were assessed and assigned scores, which were then submitted to modal expression analysis, which considers the higher frequency scores, thus relating the variables. The cytological findings demonstrated that the majority of the cases had malignant potential. Exfoliative cytology should be used as a supplementary tool for the diagnosis of OSCC, as it enables the early detection of these lesions. However, cytology should not be used as a substitute for histopathological examination. Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a disseminated plasma cell tumor caused by the proliferation of a single plasma cell clone which results from the production of monoclonal immunoglobulin, most commonly class G (IgG). MM is a cancer of the elderly, with a mean age at diagnosis of 68 years. A 79-year-old white patient sought the outpatient clinic of the Discipline of Stomatology, Sao Jose dos Campos Dental School, UNESP, because of a fracture associated with an osteolytic lesion in the right ascending ramus of the mandible. In view of the clinical-radiographic findings, exploratory fine needle aspiration (FNA) of the lesion was performed and the sanguinolent material obtained was submitted to the preparations of smears for cytology analysis. The diagnosis of MM was based on laboratory and radiographic findings. FNA cytology analysis of the lesion permitted a diagnostic hypothesis of MM.

A proposta deste trabalho foi analisar as alterações ósseas da ATM de 75 pacientes com desordens temporomandibulares, por meio de imagens de planigrafia convencional, planigrafia digital e ressonância magnética. O índice temporomandibular foi usado para selecionar os pacientes com alterações intra-articulares, excluindo-se aqueles com somente alterações musculares. Os pacientes foram divididos em três grupos de 25 sujeitos; o grupo 1 foi submetido à planigrafia convencional, o grupo 2 à planigrafia digital e o grupo 3 à ressonância magnética. O teste do qui-quadrado (χ2 ) foi usado para se comparar o número de alterações ósseas da ATM visto nos três grupos, divididas tais alterações em cinco aspectos: espaço articular anterior, cabeça da mandíbula, eminência articular, movimento e posição da cabeça da mandíbula. A planigrafia convencional e a digital tiveram a qualidade de suas imagens analisada pelo programa Aeroimagem 1.0 (Instituto de Estudos Avançados, IEAv, FAB , São José dos Campos, SP, Brasil). O grupo 2 mostrou mais alterações ósseas da ATM do que os grupos 1 (p=0,012) e 3 (p=0,00). Os grupos 1 e 3 não diferiram significativamente entre si (p=0,018). As imagens de planigrafia digital mostraram maior número e melhor distribuição dos níveis de cinza que as de planigrafia convencional pelo programa Aeroimagem 1.0. A planigrafia digital mostrou maior número de alterações ósseas da ATM do que a planigrafia convencional e a ressonância magnética. A planigrafia convencional e a ressonância não diferiram entre si neste aspecto. A planigrafia digital ofereceu maior quantidade de informações e qualidade de imagem que a convencional.

J Oral Pathol Med (2010) 39: 441–446 Background: The aim of the present study was to quantitatively evaluate micronuclei (MN) in the mucosa of users of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs in a Brazilian population. Methods: Patients were divided: (i) experimental group – 24 patients users of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs from the Center of Psychosocial Care for Alcohol and other Drugs (CAPSad), Sao Jose dos Campos city, and (ii) control group: 24 patients attending the clinics of the Sao Jose dos Campos Dental School FOSJC-UNESP. Criterion for inclusion in the two groups was no visible clinical alteration in the oral mucosa. Exfoliative cytology specimens were obtained from the left side of the border of the tongue. Feulgen staining was used and 600 cells per subject were evaluated by light microscopy. Results: The frequency of MN and micronucleated cells was analysed statistically using the Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests. The incidence of MN was 3.08 ± 3.20 in the CAPSad group and 2.08 ± 1.93 in the control group. The frequency of micronucleated cells was 2.38 ± 2.57 in the CAPSad group and 1.42 ± 1.25 in the control group. Conclusion: The results showed a higher frequency of MN and micronucleated cells in the CAPSad group, but the difference compared with the control group was not significant.

Physical examination and anamnesis are foremost and fundamental in any health area in order to obtain precise diagnosis and suitable treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the importance given by the students to the diagnosis process. A total of 150 volunteer students were evaluated through a questionnaire taking into consideration the importance given to detailed physical examination and anamnesis. The results were analyzed by descriptive statistics: 45.6% of the volunteers failed to ask some kind of question; 3.88% of the students from the night course and 26% from the comprehensive course are not used to explaining the importance of anamnesis to their patients; 66.99% of the students are used to evaluating the stomatognathic system as a whole; and only 47.57% of the students feel motivated to perform the complete extra- and intra-oral physical examination in the clinic. In view of the results, we can see that there is a need for new studies using other evaluation methods, including evaluation of clinical practice, in order to improve the teaching/learning processes.

To compare the efficacy ofPapanicolaou, hematoxylin-eosin (H-E), Leishman and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining for cytologic diagnosis of oral lesions.Patients from the Discipline of Stomatology, São José dos Campos Dental School, from the wards of Hosapital Heliópolis and from the dentistry outpatient clinic of the University Hospital, University of São Paulo Medical School, with the following diseases, were selected: erythematous candidiasis (n=9), pseudomembranous candidiasis (n=10), squamous cell carcinoma (n=19), herpes simplex (n=8), paracoccidioidomycosis (n=8) and pemphigus vulgaris (n=1).The different staining methods were compared regarding the quality of definition of cytoplasmic and nuclear morphologic characteristics and the identification of bacteria, fungi, inflammatory cells and secretions. Papanicolaou and H-E staining were considered better methods. In cases of fungal infections, PAS staining is useful and should be applied as a complementary method.Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the cytologic diagnosis of oral lesions along with different staining methods is a useful tool for oral diagnosis.

This study was undertaken to investigate, by immunohistochemistry, the expression of survivin and inducible nitric oxide synthase during 4NQO-induced rat tongue carcinogenesis. The most used animal models in oral cancer research are the hamster treated by dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA), and the rat treated by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4NQO). The purpose of this study was to compare the DMBA-induced hamster tongue carcinogenesis and 4NQO-induced rat tongue carcinogenesis by means of morphological analysis. Male Wistar rats were distributed into three groups of ten animals each and treated with 50 ppm 4NQO solution by drinking water for 4, 12 or 20 weeks. A total of 18 Syrian golden hamsters were submitted to 0.5% DMBA (dissolved in acetone) topical application three times/week for 4, 12 and 20 weeks. The primary histopathological change i.e., hyperplasia and hyperkeratosis, was evidenced after 4 weeks treatment with DMBA. Regarding 12 weeks treatment, 4NQO and DMBA were able to induce morphological changes as depicted by hyperplasia and dysplasia. At 20 weeks, squamous cell carcinoma was found in the majority of animals for both carcinogens used. Taken together, our results suggest that the hamster experimental model disclosed aspects related with tongue carcinogenesis in lesser time than rats. Probably, such discrepancies depend strongly on route of administration and the susceptibility with respect to animal species.

MA mainly affects dark skinned patients and grows rapidly, showing a plane or slightly raised appearance and a brown to black color. The differential diagnosis includes oral nevi, amalgam tattoos, and melanomas. We report here the case of a 58-year-old black woman who presented multiple pigmented lesions on the hard palate. Case presentation. Based on the differential diagnosis of melanoma, a punch biopsy (4 mm in diameter) was performed. The material was fixed in 10% formalin, embedded in paraffin, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin or submitted to immunohistochemical analysis. Immunohistochemistry using antibodies against protein S-100, melan-A, HMB-45, MCM-2, MCM-5, Ki-67 and geminin was performed. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed strong cytoplasmic immunoreactivity of dendritic melanocytes for proteinS-100, HMB-45 and melan-A.Positive staining for proliferative markers (MCM-2, MCM-5, Ki-67) was only observed in basal and suprabasal epithelial cells, confirming the reactive etiology of the lesion. The diagnosis was oral Melanoacanthoma (MA). Conclusion: The patient has been followed up for 30 months and shows no clinical alterations. Melanoma of the skin is characterised by a high metastatic potential, but reports of metastasis to the tongue are rare. We report a case of skin melanoma with metastasis to the lymph nodes, tongue and brain.This report highlights the clinical and histological features of oral metastatic melanoma.A 72-year-old man was seen with a nodule on the tongue. The differential diagnosis included salivary gland tumour, lymphoma and metastatic melanoma. His medical history revealed treatment for melanoma in the periumbilical region and micrometastases in the inguinal lymph nodes. An incisional biopsy was obtained and histological analysis showed the presence of a solid, epithelioid malignant tumour of monotonous appearance infiltrating the skeletal musculature. Immunohistochemistry showed reactivity of neoplastic cells to anti-HMB45, anti-melan A and anti-S100 antibodies and negativity for anti-PAN cytokeratin, confirming the diagnosis of metastatic melanoma.The present findings highlight the importance of a complete medical evaluation of the patient by anamnesis to identify possible oral repercussions of primary diseases in other organs and/or systems.

Objective The objective of this study was to compare the expression of proteins p53, MDM2, and SUMO-1 in oral lichen planus (OLP) lesions, epithelial dysplasia, and squamous cell carcinoma. Materials and Methods The sample consisted of the following five groups of cheek mucosa lesions: normal mucosa (NM), inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH), lichen planus, epithelial dysplasia, and squamous cell carcinoma. The tissue samples were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and submitted to immunohistochemistry using anti-p53, anti-MDM2, and anti-SUMO-1 antibodies. Results The results of this study demonstrated similar expression of p53 and MDM2 between OLP, oral epithelial dysplasia and, to a lesser extent, between OLP and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, for SUMO-1 a similar expression was observed in OLP, NM, and IFH. Conclusions The results demonstrated overexpression of important proteins (p53 and MDM2) related to regulatory mechanisms of apoptosis in OLP, suggesting that there is a favorable environment for malignant transformation. The expression of SUMO-1 in OLP was similar to NM and IFH, suggesting that alterations of this protein occur at later stages of carcinogenesis, because important overexpression occurred in oral epithelial dysplasia and OSCC.

To compare the expression of cytokeratins (CKs) 6, 16, 19 and pan-cytokeratin (PAN) in oral mucosa cells between smokers and nonsmokers to determine the proliferative activity and expression indicative of a potential for malignant transformation.Smears were obtained from the left lateral border of the tongue with a cytobrush from 25 smokers and 20 nonsmokers seen at the clinics of São José dos Campos Dental School, São Paulo State University, São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil, and processed for immunohistochemistry. Conventional microscopy was used for qualitative analysis. Proportions were compared statistically by the z-test and Fisher's exact test.The expression of CK6 (p = 0.002), CK16 (p = 0.003), CK19 (p = 0.0001) and PAN (p = 0.008) was higher in oral mucosa smears from smokers compared to nonsmokers.The expression of CK6 and CK16 demonstrated increased epithelial proliferation in the oral mucosa of smokers, and expression of CK19 indicated alterations in epithelial maturation. The expression of PAN indicates the need for the investigation of other types of CK in further studies.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is not the most common fungal disease in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), except for endemic regions in Latin America countries.A 33-year-old man with HIV presented with mulberry-like lesions on the palate. The diagnosis was made by exfoliative cytology and Papanicolaou staining. Microscopic analysis revealed fungal structures with birefringent walls and exosporulation conferring an airplane radial motor appearance, or even bowel-like or goblet-like forms compatible with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.This process spares the immunosuppressed patient from undergoing invasive biopsy procedures.

In most cases it is preliminary diagnosed as a radiographic finding, presenting as well circumscribed or as a round or teardrop-shaped radiolucent area. Due to its location it can easily be misdiagnosed as a lesion of endodontic origin. Final diagnosis should be based on histopatological examination. The purpose of this paper is to report a classic case of lateral periodontal cyst located in the anterior region of mandible and to review the relevant literature which describes the clinical, radiological and histopathological features of lateral periodontal cysts. A 50 years female patient complained of an asymptomatic gingival swelling in the region between the left mandibular lateral incisor and canine. Radiographic examination revealed a well circumscribed radiolucency with approximately 0.5 cm diameter with a radiopaque margin between the roots of the left mandibular lateral incisor and canine. The adjacent teeth had vital pulp. A total enucleation of the lesion was performed, and intraoperative examination showed a single lesion with no communication between the cyst's cavity and the oral environment. Histological examination revealed that the lesion was lateral periodontal cyst of developmental origin. There was no recurrence or complications for 24 months follow-up. The lateral periodontal cyst can be considered in the differential diagnosis when a radioloucent lesion appears adjacent to the roots of vital teeth. The treatment of choice is surgical removal and subsequent histological evaluation to confirm the diagnosis. Relapses are infrequent. The lateral periodontal cyst, as the name implies, occurs on a lateral periodontal location and is of developmental origin, arising from cystic degeneration of clear cells of the dental lamina. A botryoid odontogenic cyst is considered to be a rare multilocular variant of a lateral periodontal cyst. Case presentation. We report the clinical and histopathologic features of a rare case of botryoid odontogenic cyst found in an edentulous area corresponding to the right lower canine of a 64-year-old African-American woman. A multilocular radiolucency was observed, and surgical removal of the lesion revealed a nodule of rubber-like consistency measuring about 1.5 cm in diameter. Cross-sectioning of the nodule showed that it consisted of various cystic compartments. Histologically, various voluminous periodic acid-Schiff-negative clear cells randomly distributed throughout the cystic epithelium were observed, as well as cell layers showing thickenings generally formed by oval, sometimes entangled plaques. The capsule consisted of fibrous connective tissue and showed rare and discrete foci of a perivascular mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate and reactive bone-tissue fragments. The final diagnosis was botryoid odontogenic cyst. Conclusion: We provide data that allow the reader to establish the differences between botryoid odontogenic cyst, glandular odontogenic cyst, and lateral periodontal cyst, helping with the differential diagnosis. Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by multiple clinical presentations and a relatively high prevalence in the population. This retrospective patient record study investigated the profile of OLP in a group of Brazilian patients seen between 1989 and 2009. Findings. The clinical records were analyzed and data such as gender, age, race, clinical presentation of OLP, site affected, presence of symptoms and extraoral manifestations of the disease, smoking habit, and consumption of alcoholic beverages were obtained. Among the 1822 records of patients with oral mucosal lesions, OLP was identified in 6.03%. Of these, 76.36% were females, with a mean age of 54 years, and 85% were whites. The reticular form was the most frequent (81.81%). Extraoral lesions were observed in 32.72% of the patients and painful symptoms were reported by 50.90%. The cheek mucosa was the site most affected (92.72%) and multiple oral lesions were observed in 77.27% of the patients. Among patients with OLP, 18.18% reported a smoking habit and 29.09% the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Conclusions. This retrospective study showed a relatively high prevalence of OLP in the population studied, with a predominance of the disease among middle-aged white women and bilateral involvement of the cheek mucosa. Reticular lesions were the most frequent, followed by the erosive form which is mainly associated with painful symptoms. The biochemical alterations between inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH) and normal tissues of buccal mucosa were probed by using the FT-Raman spectroscopy technique. The aim was to find the minimal set of Raman bands that would furnish the best discrimination.Raman-based optical biopsy is a widely recognized potential technique for noninvasive real-time diagnosis. However, few studies had been devoted to the discrimination of very common subtle or early pathologic states as inflammatory processes that are always present on, for example, cancer lesion borders.Seventy spectra of IFH from 14 patients were compared with 30 spectra of normal tissues from six patients. The statistical analysis was performed with principal components analysis and soft independent modeling class analogy cross-validated, leave-one-out methods.Bands close to 574, 1,100, 1,250 to 1,350, and 1,500 cm(-1) (mainly amino acids and collagen bands) showed the main intragroup variations that are due to the acanthosis process in the IFH epithelium. The 1,200 (C-C aromatic/DNA), 1,350 (CH(2) bending/collagen 1), and 1,730 cm(-1) (collagen III) regions presented the main intergroup variations. This finding was interpreted as originating in an extracellular matrix-degeneration process occurring in the inflammatory tissues. The statistical analysis results indicated that the best discrimination capability (sensitivity of 95% and specificity of 100%) was found by using the 530-580 cm(-1) spectral region.The existence of this narrow spectral window enabling normal and inflammatory diagnosis also had useful implications for an in vivo dispersive Raman setup for clinical applications.

This disease is characterized by painless bilateral enlargement of the jaws, in which bone is replaced with fibrous tissue. The condition has sui generis clinical, radiographic and histological features, of which the clinician should be aware for a better differential diagnosis in the presence of a fibro-osseous lesion affecting the bones of the maxillomandibular complex. The purpose of present paper was to review the literature and to report the most important aspects of cherubism in order to facilitate the study of this disease. Literature was reviewed about cherubism, emphasizing the relevant clinicoradiographic features and treatment. Literature was selected through a search of PubMed and Scielo electronic databases. The keywords used for search were adolescent, cherubism, cherubism/physiopathology, cherubism/treatment, cherubism/radiography. A manual search of the reference lists of the identified articles and the authors' article files and recent reviews was conducted to identify additional publications. Those studies that described new features about cherubism were included in this review. In total 44 literature sources were obtained and reviewed. Studies that described new features about cherubism physiopathology, diagnostics and treatment were reviewed. Despite the exceptions, cherubism is a clinically well-characterized disease. In cases of a suspicion of cherubism, radiographic examination is essential since the clinical presentation, the location and distribution of the lesions may define the diagnosis. Histopathological examination is complementary. Nowadays, genetic tests should be used for final diagnosis of cherubism. Incontinentia pigmenti or Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome is a rare X-linked dominant disease that mainly affects the skin, eyes, hair, central nervous system and teeth. The disease is predominant among women. Although dermatologic manifestations are among the most important aspects for the diagnosis of the syndrome, they are less damaging to the patient and do not require treatment. However, oral involvement characterized by hypodontia of deciduous and permanent teeth is important for the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. Case presentation. We report the case of a 3-year-old girl with ophthalmologic and neurologic disturbances, cutaneous manifestations and hypodontia. Since the patient did not present more damaging manifestations such as neurologic and/or ophthalmologic problems, her most severe complications were related to dental anomalies. The importance of integrated dental treatment, which combines pediatric dentistry, orthodontics and conventional prosthesis, is emphasized. Conclusion. Hypodontia is a frequent finding in incontinentia pigmenti, and dentists should be aware of this condition in order to help with the diagnosis. © 2009 Kitakawa et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2009-12-01 Introduction. Osteosarcomas are highly malignant bone-forming neoplasms that account for about 20% of all sarcomas. In light of their aggressive behavior, early diagnosis is crucial for determining adequate treatment. Dental professionals may be the first to detect jaw osteosarcomas in their initial stages. The aim of this case report is to draw attention to the possibility of diagnosing this tumor based on clinical, radiographical and cytological characteristics before confirmation by histology. Case presentation. A 24-year-old Afro-Brazilian man presented with swelling and pain on the left side of the mandible in the region of the third molar (tooth 38). Radiography showed a poorly delimited intraosseous lesion with radiolucent and radiopaque areas. The cytological aspects were consistent with the diagnosis of osteosarcoma, which was confirmed by biopsy. Conclusion. Imprint cytology was found to be a reliable, rapid and easy complementary examination. An early diagnosis of osteosarcoma of the jaw is fundamental to the early determination of an adequate treatment. © 2009 Cabral et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd. The aim of the present study was to analyze the main clinical and histopathological features of autoimmune diseases with oral manifestations such as oral lichen planus (OLP); mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP); pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and erythema multiforme (EM).Retrospective review of 5770 files from the Oral Pathology Laboratory of São José dos Campos Dental School, São Paulo State University (UNESP) comprising a 27-year period from 1974 to 2000.The cases accounted for 64 (1.10%) of 5770 anatomopathological examinations performed over the study period. Among the autoimmune diseases diagnosed, 49 (76.56%) were OLP, 6 (9.37%) were MMP, 5 (7.82%) were EM and 4 (6.25%) were PV. Descriptive statistical analysis was used.The initial manifestations of most autoimmune diseases occur in the oral mucosa, an earlier diagnosis and proper therapeutic protocol will delay the dissemination of the lesions, thus greatly contributing to a better prognosis and quality of life of the patient.

Odontogenic anomalies can occur as a result of conjoining or twinning defects. These include fusion, gemination and concrescence. This article presents two case reports of double teeth. In the first case reported, a 4 -year-old white boy presented primary double teeth associated to the absence of the right permanent mandibular lateral incisor. In the second case, a 5-year-old white girl had a family history of anomaly in primary dentition. The girl and her mother presented double teeth in the primary dentition. Her mother showed hypodontia in the permanent dentition. Extra and intra oral clinical examination was made in both cases. Radiographic analyses showed the involvement of the permanent tooth. Authors conclude that double teeth in primary dentition have to be carefully analysed as they may be associated with anomalies in the permanent dentition. Correct diagnosis of the condition implicates in a better prognosis for the patient.

The aim of this study was to report an unusual case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) in a 39-year-old woman. The tumor showed a prominent population of clear and intermediate basal cells. Clear cells rarely predominate over other cell types. Such cases are called clear cell variant of MEC. The case also revealed a variable amount of calcified material in the tumor mass. Calcifications are rare in clear cell MEC. These structures were periodic acid-Schiff positive and diastase resistant, excluding glycogen origin. Immunohistochemistry was performed, and the epidermoid component was positive for cytokeratin (CK)7, CK13, CK14, and CK19. The mucous and clear cells presented mild staining for CK7. Cytokeratins 7, 13, and 19 stained luminal cells, and intermediate cells exhibited positivity for CK7, CK14, and vimentin. The origin of the calcifications is speculated to be the result of dystrophic calcification of the amorphous eosinophilic material secreted by intermediate basal cells.

Necrotizing sialometaplasia is a benign, self-limiting and rare inflammatory disease which, on clinical and histological examination, mimics malignant neoplasms. Case report. We report the case of a healthy 25-year-old Caucasian woman with a three-week history of a painless lump on her hard palate. Oral examination revealed a nodule consisting of two lobules on the right side that measured 2.5 cm. Her mucosa was normal in color and a fluctuant area was detected in the posterior region upon palpation. Our patient was submitted to incisional biopsy and histopathological examination. The histological diagnosis was necrotizing sialometaplasia. The lesion had healed spontaneously after 30 days, with observed signs of involution of the nodule. Conclusion: Histopathological examination is necessary for the diagnosis of necrotizing sialometaplasia because the clinical features of this condition can mimic other diseases, particularly malignant neoplasms. © 2011 Oliveira Alves et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd. Mucoceles are generally characterized by swollen nodular lesions preferentially located on the lower lip and differ from the so-called ranulas, which are lesions located on the floor of the mouth and related to the sublingual or submandibular glands.Methods: The objective of the present study was to analyze data such as age, gender, race and site of the lesion of 173 mucocele cases diagnosed at the Discipline of Stomatology, Sao Jose dos Campos Dental School, UNESP, over a period of 24 years (April 1980 to February 2003).Results: of the 173 cases analyzed, 104 (60.12%) were females and 69 (39.88%) were males. Age ranged from 4 to 70 years (mean +/- SD: 17 +/- 9.53) and most patients were in the second decade of life (n = 86, 49.42%); white (n = 124, 71.68%). The lower lip was the site most frequently affected by the lesions (n = 135, 78.03%), whereas the lowest prevalence was observed for the soft palate, buccal mucosa, and lingual frenum.Conclusion: In this study, mucoceles predominated in white female subjects in the second decade of life, with the lower lip being the most frequently affected site. Foi realizado um estudo transversal das alterações da mucosa bucal entre os indígenas Waimiri-Atroari, habitantes da região amazônica central brasileira, não miscigenados, mantenedores de seus costumes sociais e modo de vida tradicionais, e livres de hábitos como o tabagismo e o alcoolismo. Respeitaram-se as exigências éticas da legislação brasileira, bem como os aspectos legais especiais da pesquisa em comunidades indígenas. Examinando-se 587 de um total de 922 indivíduos, foram encontradas alterações da mucosa bucal em 52,57% dos pacientes de zero a doze anos de idade examinados, e em 73,44% dos pacientes de treze anos ou mais de idade, perfazendo uma freqüência de 61,70% de indivíduos acometidos nesta população. As alterações da mucosa bucal mais encontradas foram, pela ordem decrescente de prevalência, a língua fissurada, a hiperplasia epitelial focal, lesões de etiologia traumática, a língua geográfica, grânulos de Fordyce e candidíase. A hiperplasia epitelial focal, como lesão característica de populações indígenas, foi observada nesta população com alta prevalência (20,95%), sem associação a sexo ou idade. As alterações da mucosa bucal observadas foram essencialmente as mesmas descritas em outras populações mundiais, à exceção da hiperplasia epitelial focal. Da mesma forma, associações entre as alterações da mucosa bucal e fatores demográficos e clínicos já estabelecidos na literatura estiveram, de maneira geral, presentes nesta população. A cross-sectional study on the oral mucosal conditions among the Waimiri Atroari indians from central Amazonia, Brazil, has been conducted. Theses indians keep their traditional way of life and social organisation, and are free from habits such as tabagism and alcoholism. Brazilian law regarding ethical procedures, as well as other special legal features of research in indian communities, were strictly followed. Out of 922 individuals from the entire population, 587 were examined, and 52.57% of the children up to twelve years and 73.44% of patients aged 13 years or older presented at least one condition of the oral mucosa, rendering a global frequency of 61.70% of affected individuals in this population. The conditions more frequently observed were, in a decreasing order of prevalence, fissured tongue, focal epithelial hyperplasia, lesions of traumatic origin, geographic tongue, Fordyces condition, and candidiasis. Focal epithelial hyperplasia, as a characteristic lesion of indian populations, occurred among the Waimiri Atroari with high prevalence (20.95%). The lesions of the oral mucosa observed among theses indians were essentially the same lesions that have been described in other populations around the world, except for focal epithelial hyperplasia. In the same way, similar associations of the conditions observed to demographic and clinical factors well described in the dental literature were present in this population.
