Wood-boring pests (WBPs) pose an enormous threat to global forest ecosystems because their early stage infestations show no visible symptoms and can result in rapid and widespread infestations at later stages, leading to large-scale tree death. Therefore, early-stage WBP detection is crucial for prompt management response. Early detection of WBPs requires advanced and effective methods like remote sensing. This review summarizes the applications of various remote sensing sensors, platforms, and detection methods for monitoring WBP infestations. The pine wood nematode (PWN) is one of the most threatening pests of pine forests in China. An essential management response involves felling and removing the infested trees before the PWN can spread over large areas, but this requires early detection. In this study, we analyzed the temporal changes in the spectral signatures of healthy and infested trees throughout the entire growing season (May to October) using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) hyperspectral images (HSI). To explore the potential of these seasonal spectral changes in detecting PWN, we investigated the separability of healthy and infested trees using both absolute values and changes in values. A random forest (RF) classifier was applied to separate healthy and infested trees based on reflectances, derivatives, vegetation indices (VIs), and their seasonal change values. We obtained the following results: (1) the seasonal changes of tree crown spectra following a PWN infestation were similar to those observed using absolute spectral values, though the latter performed better in early detection; (2) in the early stage of infestation (June and July), the green and red-edge regions contained the most sensitive bands, whereas the near-infrared portion played a more important role in later stages; (3) derivatives achieved higher overall accuracy (OA) than the reflectance in the early stage of PWN infestation (June and July); (4) in June, the Pigment Specific Simple Ratio (PSSR) had the highest separability (OA = 0.77) for PWN infestation, followed by the Plant Senescence Reflectance Index (PSRI) and the Normalized Difference Red-edge Index (NDRE), both with a OA of 0.70. In July, PSRI, Red Edge Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (RENDVI), and the Modified Red Edge Simple Ratio (MRESR) had the highest OA of 0.77. These VIs were calculated based on the red-edge regions. In August, RENDVI achieved the best accuracy (0.87), followed by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI, OA = 0.83) and the Plant Stress Index (PSI, OA = 0.80). In September and October, PSRI, PSI, the Greenness Index (GI), and RENDVI showed the strongest separability (0.87 to 0.90). Similar results were obtained using change values of VIs. In June, RENDVI, PSI, and NDVI showed the highest accuracy (OA = 0.73). In July, MRESR had the best accuracy (0.77), followed by RENDVI (0.73) and PSI (0.73). In the late stage of PWN infestation, NDVI, PSRI, PSI, RENDVI, GI, and PSSR obtained the highest accuracies (0.83 to 0.93), surpassing the accuracy achieved using absolute spectra; (5) in RF classification model, seasonal variation values derived from reflectances, derivatives, and VIs performed well in the late stages of the PWN infestation (September and October) but were not as good as absolute values in the early and middle stages (June to August). The Asian longhorn beetle (ALB) Anoplophora glabripennis is one of the most successful and most feared invasive insect species worldwide. This review covers recent research concerning the distribution of and damage caused by ALB, as well as major efforts to control and manage ALB in China. The distribution and destruction range of ALB have continued to expand over the past decade worldwide, and the number of interceptions has remained high. Detection and monitoring methods for the early discovery of ALB have diversified, with advances in semiochemical research and using satellite remote sensing in China. Ecological control of ALB in China involves planting mixtures of preferred and resistant tree species, and this practice can prevent outbreaks. In addition, strategies for chemical and biological control of ALB have achieved promising results during the last decade in China, especially the development of insecticides targeting different stages of ALB, and applying Dastarcus helophoroides and Dendrocopos major as biocontrol agents. Finally, we analyze recommendations for ALB prevention and management strategies based on native range and invasive area research. Contents and Methods: Here we present a detailed analysis of the life history, mobility and habitat requirements of the butterfly Sericinus montelus on the basis of extensive field observations, experimental breeding, capture-mark- recapture (CMR) and transect surveys. Life History: We found that S. montelus has three generations per year and overwinters as pupae on shrub branches in Xiaolongshan. The adults of first generation have a peak of emergence in late April. The second generation emerges at the end of June and the third in early to middle August. Within the study region, larvae of S. montelus are monophagous on Aristolochia contorta. Adults fly slowly and lay eggs in clusters. Key Factors: Life tables show that natural enemies and human activities such as mowing, weeding and trampling during the egg and larval stages are key factors causing high mortality, killing up to 43% of eggs and 72% of larvae thereby limiting population growth and recovery. Population Ecology: The populations of S. montelus in Xiaolongshan have a rather patchy distribution. According to CMR data, adults fly a maximum distance of 700m within a lifespan of 6 days. The host plant A. contorta, grows along the low banks of fields, irrigation ditches and paths, and can be highly affected by agricultural activities, like mowing, weeding and herding, which impact larval survival. As one of the most devastating disasters to pine forests, pine wilt disease (PWD) has caused tremendous ecological and economic losses in China. An effective way to prevent large-scale PWD outbreaks is to detect and remove the damaged pine trees at the early stage of PWD infection. However, early infected pine trees do not show obvious changes in morphology or color in the visible wavelength range, making early detection of PWD tricky. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based hyperspectral imagery (HI) has great potential for early detection of PWD. However, the commonly used methods, such as the two-dimensional convolutional neural network (2D-CNN), fail to simultaneously extract and fully utilize the spatial and spectral information, whereas the three-dimensional convolutional neural network (3D-CNN) is able to collect this information from raw hyperspectral data. In this paper, we applied the residual block to 3D-CNN and constructed a 3D-Res CNN model, the performance of which was then compared with that of 3D-CNN, 2D-CNN, and 2D-Res CNN in identifying PWD-infected pine trees from the hyperspectral images. The 3D-Res CNN model outperformed the other models, achieving an overall accuracy (OA) of 88.11% and an accuracy of 72.86% for detecting early infected pine trees (EIPs). Using only 20% of the training samples, the OA and EIP accuracy of 3D-Res CNN can still achieve 81.06% and 51.97%, which is superior to the state-of-the-art method in the early detection of PWD based on hyperspectral images. Collectively, 3D-Res CNN was more accurate and effective in early detection of PWD. In conclusion, 3D-Res CNN is proposed for early detection of PWD in this paper, making the prediction and control of PWD more accurate and effective. The pine wood nematode (PWN) uses several Monochamus species as vehicles, through a temporary hitchhiking process known as phoresy, enabling it to access new host plant resources. Monochamus saltuarius acts as a new and major vector of the PWN in Northeastern China, showing lower PWN carrying capacity and a shorter transmission cycle compared to established vectors. The apparently altered symbiotic relationship offers an interesting area for researching the costs and adaptions involved in nematode–beetle, a specialized phoresy. We analyzed the response and fitness costs of M. saltuarius through physiological measurements and transcriptomics. The PWN exerted adverse repercussions on the growth and development of M. saltuarius. The PWN accelerated larval development into pupae, while beetle adults carrying the PWN exhibited an elevated abnormality rate and mortality, and reduced starvation resistance. During the pupal stage, the expression of growth-related genes, including ecdysone-inducible genes (E74EA), cuticle proteins, and chitin genes (CHTs), markedly increased. Meanwhile, the induced immune response, mainly by the IMD and Toll signaling pathways, could be a contributing factor to adult abnormality and mortality. Adult gonads and trachea exhibited enrichment in pathways related to fatty acid elongation, biosynthesis, and metabolism. FASN, ELOVL, and SCD possibly contributed to resistance against PWN. Our research indicated that phoretic interactions between vector beetles and PWN vary throughout the vector's lifespan, particularly before and after entry into the trachea. The mutualistic symbiosis relationship between the gut microbiome and their insect hosts has attracted much scientific attention. The native woodwasp, Sirex nitobei, and the invasive European woodwasp, Sirex noctilio, are two pests that infest pines in northeastern China. Following its encounter with the native species, however, there is a lack of research on whether the gut microbiome of S. noctilio changed, what causes contributed to these alterations, and whether these changes were more conducive to invasive colonization. We used high-throughput and metatranscriptomic sequencing to investigate S. noctilio larval gut and frass from four sites where only S. noctilio and both two Sirex species and investigated the effects of environmental factors, biological interactions, and ecological processes on S. noctilio gut microbial community assembly. Amplicon sequencing of two Sirex species revealed differential patterns of bacterial and fungal composition and functional prediction. S. noctilio larval gut bacterial and fungal diversity was essentially higher in coexistence sites than in separate existence sites, and most of the larval gut bacterial and fungal community functional predictions were significantly different as well. Moreover, temperature and precipitation positively correlate with most of the highly abundant bacterial and fungal genera. Source-tracking analysis showed that S. noctilio larvae at coexistence sites remain dependent on adult gut transmission (vertical transmission) or recruitment to frass (horizontal transmission). Meanwhile, stochastic processes of drift and dispersal limitation also have important impacts on the assembly of S. noctilio larval gut microbiome, especially at coexistence sites. Simple Summary: Symbiotic bacteria play an essential role in the digestion, detoxification, and nutrient supply of bark and ambrosia beetles. They may even promote the invasiveness and adaptability of invasive beetles. However, as a newly invasive pest in China, the diversity and community structure of bacteria associated with Hylurgus ligniperda is still unclear. This hinders our ability to comprehend their invasion mechanism and ecological adaptability. Therefore, this study revealed the differences in the diversity and community composition of associated bacteria in the beetle's elytra, prothorax, and gut. Our findings revealed that the microbial population of the elytra was distinct from that of the prothorax and gut. Additionally, gender disparities existed throughout the bacterial population of elytra. The distribution of associated bacteria in different organs of males and females may indicate that they undertake different ecological functions. This study will help to understand the bacterial communities that may play important roles in Hylurgus ligniperda. Hylurgus ligniperda (Fabricius) (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) is a new invasive pest beetle in China, which colonized the Shandong province, causing devastating damage. Originating in Europe, it has spread to Oceania, Asia, North and South America. Bacterial associates have been frequently reported to play a vital role in strengthening the ecological adaptations of bark and ambrosia beetles. The environmental adaptability of H. ligniperda may be supported by their associated bacteria. Bacterial communities colonizing different body parts of insects may have different functions. However, little is known about the bacteria associated with H. ligniperda and their potential involvement in facilitating the adaptation and invasion of the beetles into new environments. In this study, we employed high-throughput sequencing technology to analyze the bacterial communities associated with male and female adults of H. ligniperda by comparing those colonizing the elytra, prothorax, and gut. Results showed that the bacterial communities of male and female adults were similar, and the elytra samples had the highest bacterial diversity and richness, followed by the gut, while the prothorax had the lowest. The dominant phyla were Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteriota, while the dominant genera were Serratia, Lactococcus, Rhodococcus, unclassified Enterobacteriaceae, and Gordonia. Among these, Rhodococcus and Gordonia were the specific genera of endobacteria and ectobacteria, respectively. Differences in the distribution of associated bacteria may suggest that they have different ecological functions for H. ligniperda. The results of functional prediction showed that bacteria were enriched in terpenoid backbone biosynthesis, degradation of aromatic compounds, limonene and pinene degradation, neomycin, kanamycin and gentamicin biosynthesis, indicating that they may assist their beetles in synthesizing pheromones, degrading toxic secondary metabolites of host trees, and antagonizing pathogenic fungi. Abstract In insects, olfaction plays a critical role in locating hosts, recognizing mates, and selecting oviposition sites. The Asian long-horned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis Motschulsky) feeds on 43 species of trees in 15 families, but its chemosensory mechanisms are poorly understood. Herein, genes encoding 61 odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) were identified from the published genome and our previous A. glabripennis transcriptomic data. To investigate their physiological functions, we performed expression profiling of all Agla OBPs in the antennae, legs, and maxillary palps of both sexes. Phylogenetic analysis clustered A. glabripennis OBPs into four subgroups, comprising 29 Minus-C OBPs, 15 Antennae-binding proteins (ABPIIs), 10 Classic OBPs, and one Plus-C OBP. 12 Agla OBP genes were expressed specifically in antennae, and Agla OBP3, Agla OBP18, Agla OBP21, Agla OBP33, Agla OBP41, Agla OBP45, and Agla OBP47 were particularly highly expressed in male antennae. These proteins may function in the detection of female sex pheromones. Agla OBP23 and Agla OBP44 were preferentially expressed in maxillary palps. Expression profiling suggests that many OBPs may be involved in olfaction and gustation, in addition to carrying hydrophobic molecules. The Agla OBPs family has acquired functional diversity concurrently with functional constraints, and further investigation could provide insight into the roles of OBPs in chemoreception. Anoplophora glabripennis (Asian longhorned beetle) is a wood-boring pest that can inhabit a wide range of healthy deciduous host trees in native and non-native habitats. Lignocellulose degradation plays a major role in the acquisition of nutrients during the growth and development of A. glabripennis larvae. In this study, the lignocellulose degradation capacity of Fusarium solani, a fungal symbiont of A. glabripennis, was investigated in fermentation culture and in four host tree species. The impact of F. solani on larval growth and survival parameters was assessed. Fermentation culture demonstrated continuous and stable production of lignocellulolytic enzymes over the cultivation period. Furthermore, F. solani was able to degrade host tree lignocellulose, as shown by decreased soluble sugar and cellulose contents and an increase in protein content. No significant differences in larval survival were observed in larvae fed with or without F. solani. However, weight and head capsule width were higher in larvae fed on F. solani, and gut lignocellulose activities were elevated in fed larvae. Our results indicate a role for F. solani in the predigestion of lignocellulose during the colonization and parasitic stages of A. glabripennis larval development, and also the F. solani an important symbiotic partner to A. glabripennis, lowering barriers to colonization and development in a range of habitats. Simple Summary: Sirex noctilio, an invasive woodwasp, together with Sirex nitobei, a native woodwasp, are potentially harmful to numerous pines in China. To investigate the flight capacity of these two woodwasp species in China, we performed laboratory measurements with a tethered-flight mill system. Our results indicate that S. noctilio can fly over a great distance and for a longer duration than S. nitobei. Nematode parasitism had no significant effect on the flight capacity of S. noctilio and S. nitobei. For both sexes of S. noctilio, post-eclosion-day (PED) age and body mass significantly influenced their flight capacity, and their flight capacity decreased with PED age. For S. nitobei, PED age did not significantly affect its flight capacity, while body mass significantly affected its flight capacity. From multiple regression analysis, PED age and body mass were major factors influencing the flight capacity of both Sirex species. Sirex noctilio F. is an invasive woodwasp that causes pine mortality in plantations in China. Sirex nitobei M. is a native woodwasp in large areas of China. In this study, the flight capacity of the two woodwasps was studied and compared using a tethered-flight mill system to find individual factors affecting the flight capacity. After flight bioassays, woodwasps were dissected to determine nematode infestation. Post-eclosion-day (PED) age significantly influenced the flight capacity of S. noctilio females and males; as woodwasps become older, their flight capacity decreased. For S. nitobei, PED age did not significantly affect their flight capacity. In general, the flight capacity of S. noctilio was greater than that of S. nitobei. Females flew further and for longer than males for both Sirex species. The Deladenus spp. parasitism status of the two Sirex species did not significantly affect their flight performance parameters. PED age and body mass were key individual factors significantly affecting the flight capacity of the two Sirex species. In this study, detailed and accurate tethered-flight parameters of S. noctilio and S. nitobei were obtained. Although this is different from natural flight, it also provides us substantial laboratory data on their flight capacity, and facilitates risk analysis of the two woodwasp species. The cytochrome P450 enzymes encoded by the Halloween genes - spook ( spo), phantom ( phm), disembodied ( dib), shadow ( sad), and shade ( shd) - catalyze a series of hydroxylation steps resulting in the active molting hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E). This study investigated 20E and ecdysone titers and the expression profile of Halloween genes and ecdysone receptor ( EcR) during larval, pupal, and adult stages in seabuckthorn carpenterworm, Holcocerus hippophaecolus Hua ( Lepidoptera: Cossidae). Hh-spo, Hh-phm, Hh-dib, and Hh-sad showed predominant expression in the prothoracic gland at the larval stage, whereas Hh-shd and Hh-EcR were significantly expressed in the fat body. The mRNA levels of Hh-spo, Hh-phm, Hh-dib, Hh-shd, Hh-sad, and Hh-EcR were lowest from late October to middle April, when the insects were in overwintering dormancy, but began to increase from May each year, when the insects were terminating quiescence. Concomitant with the changes in these genes, 20E and ecdysone titers gradually increased during the 4-year life cycle of H. hippophaecolus. These data indicate that the seasonal expressions of Hh-spo, Hh-phm, Hh-shd, and Hh-EcR play crucial roles in quiescence of the overwintering period, and are responsible for the long larval phase and the exact timing and amplitude of the ecdysteroid titer required for the coordination of growth and development in H. hippophaecolus. Pine wilt disease (PWD) has caused huge economic and environmental losses since it invaded China. Although early monitoring is an effective way to control this hazard, the monitoring window for the early stage is hard to identify, and varies in different hosts and environments. We used UAV-based multispectral images of Pinus thunbergii forest in East China to identify the change in the number of infected trees in each month of the growing season. We built classification models to detect different PWD infection stages by testing three machine learning algorithms—random forest, support vector machine, and linear discriminant analysis—and identified the best monitoring period for each infection stage (namely, green attack, early, middle, and late). From the obtained results, the early monitoring window period was determined to be in late July, whereas the monitoring window for middle and late PWD stages ranged from mid-August to early September. We also identified four important vegetation indices to monitor each infection stage. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of using machine learning algorithms to analyze multitemporal multispectral data to establish a window for early monitoring of pine wilt disease infestation. The invasive pest Dendroctonus valens has spread to northeast China, causing serious economic and ecological losses. Early detection and disposal of infested trees is critical to prevent its outbreaks. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based hyperspectral image for early detection of D. valens infestation at the individual tree level. We compared the spectral characteristics of Pinus tabuliformis in three states (healthy, infested and dead), and established classification models using three groups of features (reflectance, derivatives and spectral vegetation indices) and two algorithms (random forest and convolutional neural network). The spectral features of dead trees were clearly distinct from those of the other two classes, and all models identified them accurately. The spectral changes of infested trees occurred mainly in the visible region, but it was difficult to distinguish infested from healthy trees using random forest classification models based on reflectance and derivatives. The random forest model using spectral vegetation indices and the convolutional neural network model performed better, with an overall accuracy greater than 80% and a recall rate of infested trees reaching 70%. Our results demonstrated the great potential of hyperspectral imaging and deep learning for the early detection of D. valens infestation. The convolutional neural network proposed in this study can provide a reference for the automatic detection of early D. valens infestation using UAV-based multispectral or hyperspectral images in the future. Monochamus saltuarius (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) was reported as the vector beetle of the pine wood nematode (PWN, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) in Japan and Europe. It was first reported to transmitted the PWN to native Pinus species in 2018 in Liaoning Province, China. However, the lack of genomic resources has limited the in-depth understanding of its interspecific relationship with PWN. Here, we obtained a chromosome-level reference genome of M. saltuarius combining Illumina, Nanopore and Hi-C sequencing technologies. We assembled the scaffolds into ten chromosomes (including an X chromosome) and obtained a 682.23 Mb chromosome-level genome with a N50 of 73.69 Mb. In total, 427.67 Mb (62.69 %) repeat sequences were identified and 14, 492 protein-coding genes were predicted, of which 93.06 % were annotated. We described the mth / mthl , P450, OBP and OR gene families associated with the vector beetle's development and resistance, as well as the host selection and adaptation, which serve as a valuable resource for understanding the host adaptation in insects during evolution. Simple Summary: Trunk-boring insects belong to one of the most destructive forest pests. Larvae in some groups are particularly difficult to detect since they make their living in trunks and no obvious sign can be found from outside. To deal with this problem, a new method is presented here, which is the embedding of a vibration probe into the tree trunk to pick up vibrations caused by larvae and the use of a model to distinguish whether the tree is infected. However, this procedure can experience severe interference from environmental noise, which is simultaneously picked up with vibrations. Thus, it is necessary to add a noise suppression process before discrimination. Previous examples have proved that the application of the analysis intended for sounds to boring vibrations is feasible. Therefore, we took advantage of deep learning-based speech enhancement and further improved it to develop a boring vibration enhancement model. The training data used in this research contains boring vibrations recorded within pieces of trunks and noise, which are common for trees' living environment. The experimental results indicate that the enhancement procedure provided by our model substantially increases the accuracy of several well-known classification models, guaranteeing a more practical larvae detection. The larvae of some trunk-boring beetles barely leave traces on the outside of trunks when feeding within, rendering the detection of them rather difficult. One approach to solving this problem involves the use of a probe to pick up boring vibrations inside the trunk and distinguish larvae activity according to the vibrations. Clean boring vibration signals without noise are critical for accurate judgement. Unfortunately, these environments are filled with natural or artificial noise. To address this issue, we constructed a boring vibration enhancement model named VibDenoiser, which makes a significant contribution to this rarely studied domain. This model is built using the technology of deep learning-based speech enhancement. It consists of convolutional encoder and decoder layers with skip connections, and two layers of SRU++ for sequence modeling. The dataset constructed for study is made up of boring vibrations of Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, 1888 (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) and environmental noise. Our VibDenoiser achieves an improvement of 18.57 in SNR, and it runs in real-time on a laptop CPU. The accuracy of the four classification models increased by a large margin using vibration clips enhanced by our model. Outbreaks of pine shoot beetles (Tomicus spp.) have caused widespread tree mortality in Southwest China. However, the understanding of the role of climatic drivers in pine shoot beetle outbreaks is limited. This study aimed to characterize the relationships between climate variables and pine shoot beetle outbreaks in the forests of Yunnan pine (Pinus yunnanensis Franch) in Southwest China. The pine shoot beetle-infested total area from 2000 to 2017 was extracted from multi-data Landsat images and obtained from field survey plots. A temporal prediction model was developed by partial least squares regression. The results indicated that multi consecutive year droughts was the strongest predictor, as such a condition greatly reduced the tree resistance to the beetles. The beetle-infested total area increased with spring temperature, associated with a higher success rate of trunk colonization and accelerated larval development. Warmer temperatures and longer solar radiation duration promoted flight activity during the trunk transfer to the shoot period and allowed the completion of sister broods. Multi consecutive year droughts combined with the warmer temperatures and higher solar radiation duration could provide favorable conditions for shoot beetle outbreaks. Simple Summary: Thecodiplosis japonensis is considered the most harmful pest to pines in South Korea. T. japonensis is a native species of Japan. Recently, T. japonensis was discovered in China and has caused serious damage to local pine trees. Due to the small size and little morphological difference with its related species, it is difficult to accurately identify T. japonensis by morphological methods. Accurate and efficient molecular identification methods are urgently needed to detect this invasive gall midge pest, yet there was no molecular identification method for T. japonensis. In this study, we developed a LAMP assay to detect T. japonensis based on the COI gene sequence. The LAMP assay could detect as little as 300 fg of gDNA. Using colorimetric amplification and a crude gDNA extraction method, the total procedure could be processed in 75 min. The method established in the study can be easily used in both laboratory and field conditions, enabling rapid molecular identification of T. japonensis. Pine needle gall midge (T. japonensis), native to Japan, has become a serious invasive pest in South Korea and, more recently in 2006, in China. It was first discovered in Qingdao, Shandong Province, and has caused serious damage to local Pinus thunbergii. The insect's small size makes morphological-based identification difficult; therefore, molecular detection techniques are urgently needed for monitoring and preventing its further spread. At present, there is no simple and accurate field molecular identification tool. To solve this problem, a LAMP-based molecular diagnosis technology of T. japonensis was developed. Four LAMP primers were designed to specifically amplify T. japonensis DNA. Positive LAMP reactions usually produce amplification in one hour. The optimal incubation conditions for LAMP detection were determined with 4 LAMP primers for 60 min at 61 °C. The LAMP detection range of gDNA concentrations is wide, with a minimum detectable gDNA concentration of 300 fg. A non-destructive DNA-releasing procedure, HotSHOT "HS6", which could extract "crude DNA" for LAMP assay in 10 min, was used for larval and adult samples. Beijing's One Million Mu Plain Afforestation Project involves planting large areas with the exotic North American tree species Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh (ash). As an exotic tree species, ash is very vulnerable to infestations by the emerald ash borer (EAB), a native Chinese wood borer pest. In the early stage of an EAB infestation, attacked trees show no obvious sign. Once the stand has reached the late damage stage, death occurs rapidly. Therefore, there is a need for efficient early detection methods of EAB stress over large areas. The combination of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based hyperspectral imaging (HI) with light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is a promising practical approach for monitoring insect disturbance. In this study, we identified the most useful narrow-band spectral HI data and 3D LiDAR data for the early detection of EAB stress in ash. UAV-HI data of different infested stages (healthy, light, moderate and severe) of EAB in the 400–1000 nm range were collected from ash canopies and were processed by Partial Least Squares–Variable Importance in Projection (PLS-VIP) to identify the maximally sensitive bands. Band R678 nm had the highest PLS-VIP scores and the most robust classification ability. We combined this band with band R776 nm to develop an innovative normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI(776,678)) to estimate EAB stress. LiDAR data were used to segment individual trees and supplement the HI data. The new NDVI(776,678) identified different stages of EAB stress, with a producer's accuracy of 90% for healthy trees, 76.25% for light infestation, 58.33% for moderate infestation, and 100% for severe infestation, with an overall accuracy of 82.90% when combined with UAV-HI and LiDAR. Acoustic detection technology is a new method for early monitoring of wood-boring pests, and the effective denoising methods are the premise of acoustic detection in forests. This paper used sensors to record Semanotus bifasciatus larval feeding sounds and various environmental noises, and two kinds of sounds were mixed to obtain the noisy feeding sounds with controllable noise intensity. Then, the time domain denoising models and frequency domain denoising models were designed, and the denoising effects were compared using the metrics of a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), a segment signal-noise ratio (SegSNR), and log spectral distance (LSD). In the experiments, the average SNR increment could achieve 17.53 dB and 11.10 dB using the in the test data using the time domain features and frequency domain features, respectively. The average SegSNR increment achieved 18.59 dB and 12.04 dB, respectively, and the average LSD between pure feeding sounds and denoised feeding sounds were 0.85 dB and 0.84 dB, respectively. The experimental results demonstrated that the denoising models based on artificial intelligence were effective methods for S. bifasciatus larval feeding sounds, and the overall denoising effect was more significant, especially at low SNRs. In view of that, the denoising models using time domain features were more suitable for the forest area and quarantine environment with complex noise types and large noise interference. The red turpentine beetle (Dendroctonus valens LeConte) has caused severe ecological and economic losses since its invasion into China. It gradually spreads northeast, resulting in many Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis Carr.) deaths. Early detection of D. valens infestation (i.e., at the green attack stage) is the basis of control measures to prevent its outbreak and spread. This study examined the changes in spectral reflectance after initial attacking of D. valens. We also explored the possibility of detecting early D. valens infestation based on spectral vegetation indices and machine learning algorithms. The spectral reflectance of infested trees was significantly different from healthy trees (p < 0.05), and there was an obvious decrease in the near-infrared region (760–1386 nm; p < 0.01). Spectral vegetation indices were input into three machine learning classifiers; the classification accuracy was 72.5–80%, while the sensitivity was 65–85%. Several spectral vegetation indices (DID, CUR, TBSI, DDn2, D735, SR1, NSMI, RNIR•CRI550 and RVSI) were sensitive indicators for the early detection of D. valens damage. Our results demonstrate that remote sensing technology could be successfully applied to early detect D. valens infestation and clarify the sensitive spectral regions and vegetation indices, which has important implications for early detection based on unmanned airborne vehicle and satellite data. In recent years, more and more interest has been focused on the on-site sample preparation. Dispersive liquid–liquid microextractions without centrifugation or toxic organic solvent were developed and proved suitable for on-site extraction. In this study, a flexible dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction was developed for on-site water sample pre-concentration. A device containing a phase separation filter was prepared. By means of the phase separation filter packed with hydrophobic nonwoven polypropylene fibre, extraction phase and aqueous phase of the emulsified system were separated by manual filtration, which avoided the electric devices usually required in dispersive liquid–liquid microextractions. Combining the device with ionic liquid-based in situ dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction, a totally electricity-free procedure was developed. During the procedure, the extraction phase 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethane)sulfonyl]imide was formed through an ion exchange reaction, and then separated with water by filtration. After filtration, the extraction phase was eluted and submitted to high-performance liquid chromatography-variable wavelength detector for analysis. Parameters affecting the extraction performance were investigated and optimised. The optimised procedure achieved extraction recoveries of 75–89%. The intra-device, inter-device, intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations were less than 4.6%. Good linearity (r2 > 0.9992) was obtained over the calibration range from 2 to 1000 µg L−1. The limits of detection of the method were in the range of 0.41–0.65 µg L−1. Because electric devices and organic dispersants are not required, the present approach is proved green, fast, and extremely flexible for on-site preparation of water sample. Temperature can be a major factor for the distribution of insects, especially among invasive insects. Sirex noctilio (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) has invaded many regions in China, causing enormous ecological and economic losses. We aimed to explore the trend and potential of diffusion by researching the thermal survival limits of S. noctilio. We measured the supercooling point (SCP), critical thermal temperature (CTmax), high lethal temperature (HLT) and low lethal temperature (LLT) for S. noctilio population in China and assessed life stage-related variation in thermal tolerance. Moreover, we determined the temperature tolerance range of S. noctilio and identified the temperature parameters for its potential invasive distribution risk analysis. The SCP of adults was -11.78 ± 0.67 (mean ± SEM), the CTmax was 37.67 ± 0.54, and those of larvae were -20.77 ± 0.44 and 40.53 ± 0.27, respectively. The LLT increased with exposure time, and the HLT was generally near 43°C. S. noctilio adults can tolerate higher temperatures than larvae, and the larvae showed high resistance to cold temperature. We calculated several temperature indexes based on our results, such as the lower temperature threshold (DV0) at -2.7°C, the upper temperature threshold (DV3) at 31°C, the temperature threshold for both heat stress (TTHS) at 35°C and cold stress (TTCS) at -32.5°C. We observed that, S. noctilio was not resistant to high temperatures, its CTmax is slightly lower than the lethal temperature, and the adults were more tolerant than larvae. Our next goal was to combine the temperature tolerance of symbiotic fungi, information on climate change and the current distribution of this species to predict its potential global distribution. Pine wilt disease ( PWD) is considered as the most destructive forest-invasive alien species in China. We measured gas exchange parameters and foliar carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) of different infection phases of Masson pine in order to investigate the effect of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus infection on photosynthetic responses and resource-use efficiency. The results showed that net photosynthetic rate ( Pn), transpiration rate ( T), stomatal conductance ( gs), and internal CO2 concentrations ( Ci) decreased in the infested trees at photosynthetic photon flux density ( PPFD) levels from 0 to 2,000 μmol m−2 s−1 compared with controls. The maximum net photosynthetic rate ( Pmax) was significantly declined in the infected trees than in controls ( p < .05). There also exist significant differences in dark respiration rate ( Rd) among different infection phases ( p < .05), but the value is highest in the middle infection phase, followed by the control and then the terminal infection phase. This indicates that Pinus massoniana plants need to consume more photosynthetic products during the middle infection phase in order to defend against pine sawyer beetle feeding and PWD infection. Isotopic analysis revealed a significant decrease of the foliar δ13C ( p < .05), as much as 2.5‰ lower in the infected trees. The mean leaf N content was about 12.94% less in the middle infection phase and 27.06% less in the terminal infection phase, causing a significant increase of the foliar C:N ratio in infested trees. Both of the net photosynthetic rates and foliar δ13C were linearly correlated with the foliar N content. We also found a significant decrease ( p < .05) of resource-use efficiency in PWD-induced P. massoniana plants, which can be attributed to the closure of stomatal pores and the inactivation or loss of both Rubisco and other key Calvin cycle enzymes. This study highlights the impact of photosynthetic characteristics, foliar carbon isotope ratios, and resource-use efficiency of PWD-induced trees, which can help identify PWD infestations at the photosynthetic and physiological levels so as to better facilitate management actions. Background: The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, is a lethal pest of the palms. The identification of odorant binding protein (OBP) genes will be helpful for clarifing the mechanism of odorant detection of this pest. By sequencing the full length cDNA library of its antenne, 11 OBP genes (RferOBP1-11) were identified. Findings: The result showed RferOBP1-7 and RferOBP8-11 belonged to the minus-C and classic family, respectively qPCR revealed that RferOBP1-10 highly transcribed in the antennae, of which RferOBP1, RferOBP4, RferOBP8 and RferOBP10 were obviously male-biased expression. RferOBP7 and RferOBP11 exhibited highly expression in female head and male thorax. RferOBP2, RferOBP5 and RferOBP6 were highly expressed in the female thorax, leg and abdomen respectively. Ginkgo biloba is a typical relic plant that rarely suffers from pest hazards. This study analyzed the pattern of G. biloba pest hazards in Beijing; tested the antifeedant activity of G. biloba extracts, including ginkgo flavonoids, ginkgolide, and bilobalide, against Hyphantria cunea larvae; determined the activities of glutathione transferase (GSTs), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterase (CarE) and mixed-functional oxidase (MFO), in larvae after feeding on these G. biloba secondary metabolites; and screened for effective botanical antifeedants in the field. In this study, no indicators of insect infestation were found for any of the examined leaves of G. biloba; all tested secondary metabolites showed significant antifeedant activity and affected the activity of the four larval detoxifying enzymes. Ginkgolide had the highest antifeedant activity and the most significant effect on the detoxifying enzymes (P<0.05). Spraying leaves with G. biloba extracts or ginkgolide both significantly repelled H. cunea larvae in the field (P<0.05), although the former is more economical and practical. This study investigated the antifeedant activity of G. biloba secondary metabolites against H. cunea larvae, and the results provide new insights into the mechanism of G. biloba pest resistance. Chlorophorus caragana Xie & Wang is a destructive wood-boring beetle that damages Caragana spp. bushes and is distributed in desert areas in north-west China. Using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, we observed the morphology and ultrastructure of antennal and posterior abdominal sensilla in C. caragana females, to discuss the putative functions of these sensilla in host location and oviposition behaviors. In total, seven types (24 subtypes) of sensilla were located on the antenna and posterior abdomen. On the antenna, there were Böhm's bristles (BB.); four subtypes of sensilla chaetica (Ch.1–Ch.4) characterized by non-porous surfaces and sensillum-lymph cavities without dendrites; two subtypes of sensilla trichodea (Tr.1 and Tr.2) with a tip pore and dendrites surrounded by dendritic sheaths; dome-shaped sensilla (Dom.) emerging from a deep cavity with one tip pore; four subtypes of sensilla basiconica (Ba.1–Ba.4) and one type of sensilla auricillica (Au.) with a porous cuticular surface and dendrites in the sensillum-lymph cavity; and one type of sensilla styloconica (Sty.) with grooves on the cuticular wall. On the posterior abdomen, there were four subtypes of sensilla chaetica (Ch.5–Ch.8); three subtypes of sensilla trichodea (Tr.3–Tr.5); and three subtypes of sensilla basiconica (Ba.5–Ba.7; Ba.5 had no groove in the cuticular wall, Ba.6 had one tip pore, and Ba.7 was located in a cuticular cavity). Red turpentine beetle (RTB), Dendroctonus valens LeConte, is a destructive forest invasive species in China, it mainly attacks Pinus tabuliformis and P. bungeana. So far it has spread rapidly to the provinces of Shanxi, Hebei, Henan, Shanxi and Beijing since its first outbreak in Shanxi Province in 1998, and has caused extensive tree mortality. Space-time dynamics of D. valens population and spatial sampling technique based on its spatial distribution pattern were analyzed using geostatistical methods in the pure P. tabuliformis forests and mixedwood stands which were at different damage levels. According to the spatial distribution of D. valens population, the specific spatial sampling technique was also studied, and then was compared with traditional sampling technique. The spatial sampling technique combined with sampling theory and the biological characteristics of D. valens population, which not only could calculate the error of the sampling, but also could discuss the optimal sampling number and the optimum size of plot according to different damage levels and different stand types. Pine wilt disease ( PWD) has caused significant Masson pine mortality in the Three Gorges reservoir region in central China. In this study, five uniform Masson pine stand types infected by PWD were selected and surveyed on slopes and aspects with similar environmental conditions. In sites that had been infected, soil bulk density was reduced, and the difference among the groups was statistically significant ( P < 0.05) at the 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm soil layers, but not at 20-40 cm. Other soil water-related physical properties, excluding noncapillary porosity, significantly differed among the groups in all soil layers. Additionally, the values of available phosphorus, sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium were higher in the invaded stands, but the total nitrogen and organic matter contents were lower. Masson pine does not become reestablished following PWD-induced mortality but is instead replaced by broad-leaved tree species. Among the 19 examined environmental variables, five were found to be significantly related with the ordination of plant community structure: Masson pine stumps ( MPS), K+, capillary water holding capacity ( CWHC), capillary porosity ( CP), and soil water content ( SWC). Among these factors, the plant community structure was principally related to MPS and K+. The findings of this study show that the outbreak of PWD has impacted Masson pine forest soil properties and altered forest community composition. Herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) are important compounds to prim neighboring undamaged plants; however, the mechanism for this priming process remains unclear. To reveal metabolic changes in plants exposed to HIPVs, metabolism of leaves and roots of Ammopiptanthus mongolicus seedlings exposed to HIPVs released from conspecific plants infested with larvae of Orgyia ericae were analyzed together with control and infested seedlings using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabolic technology and multi variate data analysis. Results presented showed that HIPVs exposure led to similar but specific metabolic changes compared with those induced by infestation in both leaves and roots. Furthermore, both HIPVs exposure and herbivore attack resulted in metabolic changes involving a series of primary and secondary metabolites in both leaves and roots. Taken together, these results suggested that priming of yet-damaged plants may be achieved by reconfiguring metabolic pathways in leaves and roots to make similar concentrations for all metabolites as those in seedlings infested. Therefore, we propose that improved readiness of defense induction of primed plants toward subsequent herbivore attack may be based on the similar metabolic profiling induced by HIPVs exposure as those caused by herbivore. The amino acid, protein, carbohydrate, and mineral element contents and composition of the xylem, phloem, and leaves of healthy and insect-damaged Caragana korshinskii plants were analyzed to evaluate the changes in the nutrient content of C. korshinskii after damage by Chlorophorus caragana. The amino acid content decreased in the leaf and phloem but increased in the xylem in response to damage, while the protein content did not change in the leaf, increased in the xylem, and decreased in the phloem. The carbohydrate content increased slightly in the leaf but decreased in the xylem and phloem. The six mineral elements analyzed, namely, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, and iron decreased in the xylem, phloem, and leaf. The aim of this study was to define the oviposition preference of Holcocerus hippophaecolus. Six Sea Buckthorn subspecies (varieties and hybrids) were selected and studied using artificial infection by insects raised in cages. The results showed H. rhamnoides subsp sinensis showing the highest oviposition rate and quantity and Taiyang the lowest. Qiuyisike × H. rhamnoides subsp sinensis, Chuyi, and Taiyang showed high resistance, whereas H. rhamnoides subsp sinensis, Hunjin and Wulangemu × H. rhamnoides subsp sinensis showed low resistance. The oviposition preference of H. hippophaecolus did not correlate with bark water content, lenticel size and lenticel density, but did correlate with bark thickness, bark density, crack ration. Abstract: In plants attacked by insects, metabolic changes can reflect the direct and indirect ability of those plants to resist infestation. However, the metabolic pathways involved in this process remain unclear, especially for plants which belong to ancient Tertiary relict taxon. To analyze the changes in metabolites and identify specific metabolic patterns induced by herbivorous and continuous mechanical wounding, the metabolism of Ammopiptanthus mongolicus seedlings damaged by Orgyia ericae Germar or continuous mechanical wounding were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) combined with multivariate data analysis (MVDA). Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal signal correction projections to latent structure discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA) showed that O. ericae feeding and mechanical wounding induced different changes in the metabolic profile of A. mongolicus both in local and systemic leaves. O. ericae feeding was associated with higher concentrations of many primary and secondary metabolites in local and systemic leaves than continuous mechanical wounding. In this way, the response of A. mongolicus to wounding was shown to be both specific to the metabolism, systemic, and to involve both primary and secondary metabolic pathways. Sirex noctilio along with its mutualistic fungal symbiont, Amylostereum areolatum (a white rot fungus), is an invasive pest that causes excessive damage to Pinus plantations in Northeast China. In 2015, S. noctilio were found to attack Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, and often share larval habitat with the native woodwasp, S. nitobei. The objective of this study was to determine the possible origin(s) of the introduced pest complex in China and analyse the genetic diversity between A. areolatum isolated from invasive S. noctilio, native S. nitobei and other woodwasps collected from Europe (native range) and other countries. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using the intergenic spacer (IGS) dataset and the combined 4-locus dataset (the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), translation elongation factor alpha 1 (tef1), DNA-directed ribosomal polymerase II (RPB2), and mitochondrial small subunit (mtSSU)) of three Amylostereum taxa. The multilocus genotyping of nuclear ribosomal regions and protein coding genes revealed at least three distinct multilocus genotypes (MLGs) of the fungus associated with invasive S. noctilio populations in Northeast China, which may have come from North America or Europe. The IGS region of A. areolatum carried by S. noctilio from China was designated type B1D2. Our results showed a lack of fidelity (the paradigm of obligate fidelity to a single fungus per wasp species) between woodwasp hosts and A. areolatum. We found that the native S. nitobei predominantly carried A. areolatum IGS-D2, but a low percentage of females instead carried A. areolatum IGS-B1D2 (MLG A13), which was presumably due to horizontal transmission from S. noctilio, during the sequential use of the same wood for larval development. The precise identification of the A. areolatum genotypes provides valuable insight into co-evolution between Siricidae and their symbionts, as well as understanding of the geographical origin and history of both Sirex species and their associated fungi. Abstract: The parasitoid beetle Dastarcus helophoroides (Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Bothrideridae) is an important parasite of longicorn beetles (Cerambycidae), and has been used in China for the biological control of the Asian longicorn beetle and the Japanese pine sawyer. In this study the antennal morphology and sensillar ultrastructure of D. helophoroides were observed using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Two types of sensilla trichodea (Tr. 1 and Tr. 2), two types of sensilla basiconica (Ba. 1 and Ba. 2), three types of sensilla chaetica (Ch. 1, Ch. 2 and Ch. 3), and Bohm''s bristles were identified according to the morphology and fine structure of each type of sensilla in both sexes. Ultrastructural studies revealed porous structures on the cuticle wall and dendritic branches in the inner lumen of Tr. 1, Tr. 2, Ba. 1, and Ba. 2, thereby suggesting chemoreceptor functions. No difference in shape, structure, sensilla distribution and typology was observed between the sexes. These structures likely have roles in the host locating and habitat searching behavior of adult D. helophoroides, and suggest future studies on the olfaction and host location behavior of D. helophoroides and other coleopteran parasitoids. The cold hardiness between different populations varied on a spatiotemporal scale; specifically, the harsher the environment, the stronger the cold tolerance of overwintering Sirex noctilio larvae. A tunnel played a certain protective role but did not affect the low temperature parameters limiting the distribution of S. noctilio. We provide experimentally determined low temperature limiting parameters of Sirex noctilio and prove it has the opportunity to spread and colonize in other regions. Sirex noctilio (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) is an invasive pest that has spread and established in many regions worldwide. However, its cold tolerance strategy is still unclear. We measured the supercooling point (SCP) and the lower lethal temperature (LLT) of overwintering S. noctilio larvae during three overwintering periods in four geographically separated populations in China. In addition, using the statistical analysis of the local historical temperature data, we also conducted comprehensive studies of S. noctilio cold tolerance variations and strategies. We measured the SCP of all samples as S. noctilio could survive at its SCP during a short period of exposure (<48 h) and its cold tolerance strategy was freeze-avoidance. The average SCPs of the groups in different spatiotemporal scales were significantly related to average temperature variation with most individuals exhibiting stronger cold hardiness at low ambient temperatures. S. noctilio exhibited a strong cold tolerance and it has the ability to withstand lower temperatures in cold environments. An obligate mutualistic relationship exists between the fungus Amylostereum areolatum and woodwasp Sirex noctilio. The fungus digests lignin in the host pine, providing essential nutrients for the growing woodwasp larvae. However, the functional properties of this symbiosis are poorly described. In this study, we identified, cloned, and characterized 14 laccase genes from A. areolatum. These genes encoded proteins of 508 to 529 amino acids and contained three typical copper-oxidase domains, necessary to confer laccase activity. Besides, we performed molecular docking and dynamics simulation of the laccase proteins in complex with lignin compounds (monomers, dimers, trimers, and tetramers). AaLac2, AaLac3, AaLac6, AaLac8, and AaLac10 were found that had low binding energies with all lignin model compounds tested and three of them could maintain stability when binding to these compounds. Among these complexes, amino acid residues ALA, GLN, LEU, PHE, PRO, and SER were commonly present. Our study reveals the molecular basis of A. areolatum laccases interacting with lignin, which is essential for understanding how the fungus provides nutrients to S. noctilio. These findings might also provide guidance for the control of S. noctilio by informing the design of enzyme mutants that could reduce the efficiency of lignin degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sirex noctilio F. (Hymenoptera: Siricidae: Siricinae), a new invasive species in China, is a significant international forestry pest which, transported via logs and related wood packing materials, has led to environmental damage and substantial economic loss in many countries around the world. It was first detected in China in 2013, and since then infestations have been found in 18 additional sites. Using a 322 bp fragment of the mitochondrial barcode gene COI, we studied the genetic diversity and structure of S. noctilio populations in both native and invaded ranges, with a specific focus in China. Twelve haplotypes were found across the native and invaded distribution of the pest, of which three were dominant; among these there were only one or two mutational steps between each pair of haplotypes. No obvious genetic structure was found other than in Chinese populations. China has a unique and dominant haplotype not found elsewhere, and compared with the rest of the world, the genetic structure of Chinese populations suggested a multiple invasion scenario. Sirex noctilio F. (Hymenoptera: Siricidae) is an invasive woodwasp from Europe and North Africa. Globalization has led to an expanding global presence in pine forests. S. noctilio has been previously introduced outside of its native range and now co-occurs in trees with native S. nitobei Matsumura (first discovered in 2016). Damage to Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica Litv in northeast China can be attributed to two types of woodwasp. To distinguish the two species by the traditional taxonomic morphology, we mainly differentiate the color of the male's abdomen and the female's leg. There remains intraspecific variation like leg color in the delimitation of related genera or sibling species of Sirex woodwasps. In this study, we used landmark-based geometric morphometrics including principal component analysis, canonical variate analysis, thin-plate splines, and cluster analysis to analyze and compare the wings, ovipositors, and cornus of two woodwasps to ascertain whether this approach is reliable for taxonomic studies of this group. The results showed significant differences in forewing venation and the shapes of pits in the middle of ovipositors among the two species, whereas little difference in hindwings and cornus was observed. This study assists in clarifying the taxonomic uncertainties of Siricidae and lays a foundation for further studies of the interspecific relationships of the genus Sirex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Longwave ultraviolet (UVA) light, in the range of 315–400 nm, has been widely used as a light source in the light trapping of insect pests. Previous studies have demonstrated the oxidative stress and lethal effect of UV radiation on insects. In this study, we evaluated the influence of UVA radiation on the antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes of Dendrolimus tabulaeformis. We tested the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), hydroxyl radical (·OH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), reduced glutathione (GSH), and oxidized glutathione (GSSH) following different exposure time periods of UVA light irradiation on D. tabulaeformis adults. In addition, we investigated how the activities of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes responded to UVA radiation by determining the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterase (CarE), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and acid phosphatase (ACP). Adults were exposed to UVA light for different time periods (0, 5, 15, 30, 60, and 120 min). We found that exposure to UVA light for 5 min resulted in rapid variation in the activities of the antioxidant and detoxification enzyme systems. However, the antioxidant capacity of females was incongruous with that of males following UVA irradiation. Our results confirmed that UVA light irradiation increased the level of oxidative stress and disturbed physiological detoxification in D. tabulaeformis adults. Based on the above results, we anticipated that further research of the mechanism of UVA irradiation on the antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes of D. tabulaeformis would gain more importance, allowing to develop and use new, less toxic and environmentally friendly pesticides.
