Abstract The concept of a small, single-layer water Cherenkov detector, with three photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), placed at its bottom in a $$120^{\circ }$$ 120 ∘ star configuration (Mercedes Water Cherenkov Detector) is presented. The PMTs are placed near the lateral walls of the stations with an adjustable inclination and may be installed inside or outside the water volume. To illustrate the technical viability of this concept and obtain a first-order estimation of its cost, an engineering design was elaborated. The sensitivity of these stations to low energy Extensive Air Shower (EAS) electrons, photons and muons is discussed, both in compact and sparse array configurations. It is shown that the analysis of the intensity and time patterns of the PMT signals, using machine learning techniques, enables the tagging of muons, achieving an excellent gamma/hadron discrimination for TeV showers. This concept minimises the station production and maintenance costs, allowing for a highly flexible and fast installation. Mercedes Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCDs) are thus well-suited for use in high-altitude large gamma-ray observatories covering an extended energy range from the low energies, closing the gap between satellite and ground-based measurements, to very high energy regions, beyond the PeV scale.

Abstract We present a measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum above 100 PeV using the part of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory that has a spacing of 750 m. An inflection of the spectrum is observed, confirming the presence of the so-called second-knee feature. The spectrum is then combined with that of the 1500 m array to produce a single measurement of the flux, linking this spectral feature with the three additional breaks at the highest energies. The combined spectrum, with an energy scale set calorimetrically via fluorescence telescopes and using a single detector type, results in the most statistically and systematically precise measurement of spectral breaks yet obtained. These measurements are critical for furthering our understanding of the highest energy cosmic rays.

Abstract The muon tagging is an essential tool to distinguish between gamma and hadron-induced showers in wide field-of-view gamma-ray observatories. In this work, it is shown that an efficient muon tagging (and counting) can be achieved using a water Cherenkov detector with a reduced water volume and 4 PMTs, provided that the PMT signal spatial and time patterns are interpreted by an analysis based on machine learning (ML). The developed analysis has been tested for different shower and array configurations. The output of the ML analysis, the probability of having a muon in the WCD station, has been used to notably discriminate between gamma and hadron induced showers with $$S/ \sqrt{B} \sim 4$$ S / B ∼ 4 for shower with energies $$E_0 \sim 1\,$$ E 0 ∼ 1 TeV. Finally, for proton-induced showers, an estimator of the number of muons was built by means of the sum of the probabilities of having a muon in the stations. Resolutions about $$20\%$$ 20 % and a negligible bias are obtained for vertical showers with $$N_{\mu } > 10$$ N μ > 10 .

Abstract Novel methods to reconstruct the slant depth of the maximum of the longitudinal profile ( $$X_{\mathrm{max}}$$ X max ) of high-energy showers initiated by gamma-rays as well as their energy ( $$E_0$$ E 0 ) are presented. The methods were developed for gamma rays with energies ranging from a few hundred GeV to $$\sim 10$$ ∼ 10 TeV. An estimator of $$X_{\mathrm{max}}$$ X max is obtained, event-by-event, from its correlation with the distribution of the arrival time of the particles at the ground, or the signal at the ground for lower energies. An estimator of $$E_0$$ E 0 is obtained, event-by-event, using a parametrization that has as inputs the total measured energy at the ground, the amount of energy contained in a region near to the shower core and the estimated $$X_{\mathrm{max}}$$ X max . Resolutions about $$40 \, (20)\,\mathrm{g/cm^2}$$ 40 ( 20 ) g / cm 2 and about $$30 \, (20)\%$$ 30 ( 20 ) % for, respectively, $$X_{\mathrm{max}}$$ X max and $$E_0$$ E 0 at $$1 \, (10) \ \mathrm {TeV}$$ 1 ( 10 ) TeV energies are obtained, considering vertical showers. The obtained results are auspicious and can lead to the opening of new physics avenues for large wide field-of-view gamma-ray observatories. The dependence of the resolutions with experimental conditions is discussed.

In this letter, a new strategy to enhance the discrimination of high energy gamma rays from the huge charged cosmic rays background in large cosmic rays ground arrays is presented. This strategy is based on the introduction of a new simple variable, Pγhα, which combines the probability of tagging muons and/or very energetic particles in each single array station. The discrimination power of this new variable, particularly important for and above multi-TeV energies, is illustrated for a few specific examples in the case of a hypothetical water Cherenkov detector cosmic ray array, both in the case of low and high particle stations occupancy. The results are very encouraging and hopefully will be demonstrated in the present and future gamma-ray Observatories.

Abstract The hybrid design of the Pierre Auger Observatory allows for the measurement of the properties of extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays with unprecedented precision. By using an array of prototype underground muon detectors, we have performed the first direct measurement, by the Auger Collaboration, of the muon content of air showers between $$2\times 10^{17}$$ 2×1017 and $$2\times 10^{18}$$ 2×1018 eV. We have studied the energy evolution of the attenuation-corrected muon density, and compared it to predictions from air shower simulations. The observed densities are found to be larger than those predicted by models. We quantify this discrepancy by combining the measurements from the muon detector with those from the Auger fluorescence detector at $$10^{{17.5}}\, {\mathrm{eV}} $$ 1017.5eV and $$10^{{18}}\, {\mathrm{eV}} $$ 1018eV . We find that, for the models to explain the data, an increase in the muon density of $$38\%$$ 38% $$\pm 4\% (12\%)$$ ±4%(12%) $$\pm {}^{21\%}_{18\%}$$ ±18%21% for EPOS-LHC, and of $$50\% (53\%)$$ 50%(53%) $$\pm 4\% (13\%)$$ ±4%(13%) $$\pm {}^{23\%}_{20\%}$$ ±20%23% for QGSJetII-04, is respectively needed.

A search for time-directional coincidences of ultra-high-energy (UHE) photons above 10 EeV with gravitational wave (GW) events from the LIGO/Virgo runs O1 to O3 is conducted with the Pierre Auger Observatory. Due to the distinctive properties of photon interactions and to the background expected from hadronic showers, a subset of the most interesting GW events is selected based on their localization quality and distance. Time periods of 1000 s around and 1 day after the GW events are analyzed. No coincidences are observed. Upper limits on the UHE photon fluence from a GW event are derived that are typically at ∼7 MeV cm ^−2 (time period 1000 s) and ∼35 MeV cm ^−2 (time period 1 day). Due to the proximity of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, the energy of the source transferred into UHE photons above 40 EeV is constrained to be less than 20% of its total GW energy. These are the first limits on UHE photons from GW sources.

AbstractIntroduction Neurosensory disorders may be considered as a complication from surgical procedures, such as dental implants and mandibular osteotomy [1–3]. In these cases, the orofacial damage can involve general and professional patient impairments. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been reported to be effective in reducing neurosensory recovery time, while promoting nerve regeneration [4,5]. This study aimed to analyse the LLLT impact on postsurgical neurosensory recovery, namely for dental and maxillofacial surgery patients.Materials and methods Patients previously submitted to dental and/or maxilofacial rehabilitation at Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Coimbra/Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, were selected. Anamnesis, examination and neurosensory evaluation were performed to determine the presence and location of neurosensory disorder. The elected orofacial area was irradiated using a continuous wave diode laser at 660 nm (SIROLaser Blue; Sirona, Bensheim, Germany) in two sessions per week, until satisfactory results were achieved. The measure of health-related quality of life was performed by EQ-5D-5L questionnaire, before and after the LLLT treatment. This study was approved by the ethics committee of Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and the informed consent document was performed. Results Two patients (both Female, Age 22) were selected. Treatment lasted approximately 1 months in both cases. The mean score before and after treatment (0–100 scale), of the EQ-5D-5L questionnaire was 70.0–95.5.The recovery of the neurosensory disorder allowed the quality improvement in all 5 dimensions: mobility, self-care, daily activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. No reactions or side-effects were reported.Discussion and conclusions 5 dimensions of health quality were analysed and the severity level degrees were related with the corporal/patient impairment. The results supported the use of LLLT as an effective treatment option by accelerating the recovery of postsurgical neurosensory disturbances, improving the patient’s health.

Abstract Elves are a class of transient luminous events, with a radial extent typically greater than 250 km, that occur in the lower ionosphere above strong electrical storms. We report the observation of 1,598 elves, from 2014 to 2016, recorded with unprecedented time resolution (100 ns) using the fluorescence detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Cosmic‐Ray Observatory. The Auger Observatory is located in the Mendoza province of Argentina with a viewing footprint for elve observations of 3·106 km 2, reaching areas above the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, as well as the Córdoba region, which is known for severe convective thunderstorms. Primarily designed for ultrahigh energy cosmic‐ray observations, the Auger FD turns out to be very sensitive to the ultraviolet emission in elves. The detector features modified Schmidt optics with large apertures resulting in a field of view that spans the horizon, and year‐round operation on dark nights with low moonlight background, when the local weather is favorable. The measured light profiles of 18% of the elve events have more than one peak, compatible with intracloud activity. Within the 3‐year sample, 72% of the elves correlate with the far‐field radiation measurements of the World Wide Lightning Location Network. The Auger Observatory plans to continue operations until at least 2025, including elve observations and analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this observatory is the only facility on Earth that measures elves with year‐round operation and full horizon coverage.

- Abstract
Young people struggle to seek help for their mental health, despite having different resources available. As the coping process is very complex, and elements such as trust and availability of resources have been said to influence it, this study aimed to understand how young people cope with their own or a friend's symptoms of poor mental health. Eleven young people (13-15 years old) were interviewed. Thematic Analysis of the interviews showed that participants reported different coping strategies for dealing with their own hypothetical symptoms and those of a friend. Participants identified the social impact of experiencing symptoms of poor mental health and choice of resources as the main factors influencing their coping strategies. For their own symptoms, young people expressed concern about being judged and that they would only disclose to someone they trust. Participants would not disclose a friend's symptoms because they did not want to break their trust. Finally, choice of resources was mainly influenced by the severity of symptoms being experienced, especially when it comes to asking for professional help. This study contributes to a better understanding of the different ways in which young people cope with their own symptoms and symptoms experienced by a friend.

An overview of the multi-messenger capabilities of the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The techniques and performance of searching for Ultra-High Energy neutrinos, photons and neutrons are described. Some of the most relevant results are reviewed, such as stringent upper bounds that were placed to a flux of diffuse cosmogenic neutrinos and photons, bounds placed on neutrinos emitted from compact binary mergers that were detected by LIGO and Virgo during their first and second observing runs, as well as searches for high energy photons and neutrons from the Galactic center that constrain the properties of the putative Galactic PeVatron, observed by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. The observation of directional correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays and either high energy astrophysical neutrinos or specific source populations, weighted by their electromagnetic radiation, are also discussed. They constitute additional multi-messenger approaches aimed at identifying the sources of high energy cosmic rays.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
We report a first measurement for ultrahigh energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the ‘ankle’ at lg(E/eV)=18.5–19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4. Scenarios such as the proton dip model, with almost pure compositions, are thus disfavored as the sole explanation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray flux at Earth. The hadronic part of the electron structure function F2e has been measured for the first time, using e+e− data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies of s=91.2–209.5 GeV. The data analysis is simpler than that of the measurement of the photon structure function. The electron structure function F2e data are compared to predictions of phenomenological models based on the photon structure function. It is shown that the contribution of large target photon virtualities is significant. The data presented can serve as a cross-check of the photon structure function F2γ analyses and help in refining existing parameterisations.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
The observation of ultrahigh energy neutrinos (UHEνs) has become a priority in experimental astroparticle physics. UHEνs can be detected with a variety of techniques. In particular, neutrinos can interact in the atmosphere (downward-going ν) or in the Earth crust (Earth-skimming ν), producing air showers that can be observed with arrays of detectors at the ground. With the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory we can detect these types of cascades. The distinguishing signature for neutrino events is the presence of very inclined showers produced close to the ground (i.e., after having traversed a large amount of atmosphere). In this work we review the procedure and criteria established to search for UHEνs in the data collected with the ground array of the Pierre Auger Observatory. This includes Earth-skimming as well as downward-going neutrinos. No neutrino candidates have been found, which allows us to place competitive limits to the diffuse flux of UHEνs in the EeV range and above.

Purpose: The multisystem clinical manifestations and complications of achondroplasia, the most common form of disproportionate short stature, can cause functional impairment and psychosocial burden. The Lifetime Impact Study for Achondroplasia (LISA), aimed to assess health-related quality of life and medical resource utilization among Latin America patients with achondroplasia. Methods: Data were collected from individuals aged 3 years and above in Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia between 2018 and 2021. A total of 172 patients participated in the study. Results: Children with achondroplasia reported lower scores compared with average stature children in Quality of Life in Short Stature Youth (QoLISSY) and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) questionnaires, with the greatest impact on physical and social domains. Among adolescents, a significant percentage reported pain, 10.3% experienced pain in 3 or more sites. Adults scored lower than the reference population in the EQ-5D-5L Visual Analog Score, and a considerable portion reported moderate to severe anxiety/depression, pain or discomfort, and mobility problems. The Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) revealed poor health status in terms of energy, pain, and mobility. Medical events, particularly musculoskeletal and connective tissue disorders were reported, resulting in high medical resource utilization. Conclusion: Overall, the Lifetime Impact Study for Achondroplasia study provides extensive data on health-related quality of life, psychosocial impact, and health care resource utilization among individuals with achondroplasia in Latin America. The findings confirm a significant burden of illness across multiple domains for these individuals.

Abstract Plants that have potential as alternative food source (floral nectar, pollen and plant tissues) to the boll weevil during the intercropping season were evaluated considering the prevalent conditions of Cerrado in the Central Brazil. Initially, we tested the nutritional adequacy for the survival of the insect of flower resource (pollen and nectar) provided by eight plant species (fennel, mexican sunflower, castor bean, okra, hibiscus, sorghum, pigeonpea and sunn hemp). Subsequently, we tested if the resources provided by the selected plants continued to be exploited by the boll weevil in the presence of cotton plant, its main food source average longevity of boll weevil adults was significantly longer when they were fed on hibiscus’ flowers (166.6 ± 74.4) and okra flowers (34.7 ± 28.9) than when they fed on flowers of other six species. Subsequently, the preference of the boll weevil in the use of resources was compared between okra or hibiscus and cotton plants, in dual choice experiments. Boll weevils preferred plants of the three species in the reproductive stages than those in vegetative stages. Although the cotton plant in the reproductive stage was the most preferred plant of all, boll weevils preferred flowering okra and hibiscus than cotton at the vegetative stage.

- Abstract
Fatal infections with Cytauxzoon felis are common in domestic cats, and jaguars (Panthera onca) are believed carriers of this protozoan. Fatal C. felis infections have never been described in jaguars before. Thus, this study describes such an infection in a 5-month-old captive-reared jaguar that presented hyporexia and died at 26 days after the first clinical signs. During necropsy, samples were taken from several tissues, some were fixed in 10% formalin and process for histopathological diagnosis, and some samples were used for DNA extraction, amplification via PCR and sequencing of the potential pathogens. Grossly, marked splenomegaly and icterus were observed. Histologically, numerous structures that are morphologically compatible with Cytauxzoon spp. schizonts obliterated multiple blood vessels in the brain, leptomeninges, spinal cord, lungs, heart, skeletal muscle, adrenal gland, kidneys, spleen, small intestine and pancreas. C. felis was identified by PCR in many organs. Thus, C. felis infection in jaguars can be fatal, and the clinicopathological findings are similar to those of cytauxzoonosis in other wild and domestic felid species., Graphical abstract Image 1, Highlights • Cytauxzoon felis causes fatal infection in jaguar (Panthera onca). • Clinicopathological findings are similar to the infection in other felids. • Cytauxzoonosis should be investigated in young jaguars with jaundice.

Background The Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center - Questionnaire on Health Problems (OSTRC-QHP) has been shown to be a valid and reliable questionnaire for monitoring athletes with acute, overuse, and illness problems. Objectives To translate and cross-culturally adapt the OSTRC-QHP into Brazilian-Portuguese (OSTRC-BR), and investigate the measurement properties of this version. Methods The original (Norwegian) questionnaire was translated and culturally adapted following existing guidelines. Measurement properties of the OSTRC-BR were investigated in 134 athletes followed for 13 weeks. Reliability was analyzed via internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Responsiveness was assessed by effect size (ES) estimations, correlation of the OSTRC-BR severity score with the Global Perceived Effect scale (GPE) and the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), and by the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve test based on the area under the curve (AUC). Results The OSTRC-QHP has been translated and cross-culturally adapted successfully. The Cronbach's alpha was 0.93 (95% CI: 0.92, 0.94). Intrarater reliability (ICC2,1) of 0.96 (95% CI: 0.94, 0.98) was classified as excellent. ES estimation showed large effects (1.14 to 1.39). OSTRC-BR correlation was moderate (0.58 to 0.72) with the GPE and substantial (0.84 to 0.89) with the NPRS. The AUC values were above 0.70 when analysing all types of health problems. Conclusions The OSTRC-BR presented adequate measurement properties. The OSTRC-BR is a valid, reliable, responsive, and, therefore, an adequate tool for monitoring Brazilian athletes from different sports during training and competitions.

This article seeks to compare the performance of a LIDAR Windcube V2, manufactured by Leosphere, with that of a SODAR MFAS, manufactured by Scintec, in evaluating wind speed at different altitudes. The data from these two sensors were collected at three locations on the Brazilian equatorial margin in the state of Maranhão. The comparison of these sensors aims at their simultaneous use at different points. The horizontal velocity components, by altitude, showed Pearson correlation values above 0.9 and values for the vertical velocity component between 0.7 and 0.85. As for the sampling efficiency, the LIDAR had a performance slightly higher than that of SODAR, especially at the point closest to the coast. In general, both sensors showed similar values, despite the differences in sampling methods. The results showed that the joint performance of these sensors had good correlation, being reliable for application in estimating wind potential for power generation in coastal areas of the equatorial region.

Introduction The Salford Lung Studies (SLS) were real-world randomised controlled trials set within UK primary care that assessed the effectiveness and safety of initiating once-daily fluticasone furoate/vilanterol versus continuing usual care in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma. Data were collected for a relatively short period, limiting the study of long-term outcomes. To broaden the capture of SLS patients’ data, we undertook the Extended SLS (Ext-SLS), aiming to better understand the patient disease journey and the effects of treatment in a real-world setting, through collection of patient-level data. Here, we present study design information and the challenges and learnings gathered in creating the Ext-SLS. Methods The Ext-SLS was intended to augment the SLS by collecting retrospective and prospective (up to 10 years from consent) primary and secondary care electronic health record (EHR) data and patient questionnaires. After ethics approval, general practitioners (GPs) obtained consent from SLS patients remotely (mean 3.2 years post-SLS completion). To facilitate GPs identifying eligible patients, a novel EHR-based approach flagged SLS patients who were alive and registered with their original GP. An automated system sent consent forms/questionnaires to patients. Medical data were collected via EHRs; primary care data were extracted from GPs’ systems whilst secondary care data were sourced from the UK NHS. Results Of the 75 GP sites from the SLS, 35 (47%) declined Ext-SLS participation leaving 4158 potentially eligible patients; 1169 (28%) patients were excluded as GPs could not confirm them as SLS participants or due to incapacity. Of 2989 patients invited, 1189 (40%) consented. Conclusions Developing an EHR-based trial extension was achieved, with reasonable consent rates amongst invited patients. The resulting Ext-SLS is a unique and valuable research resource. Leveraging EHRs and technology reduced GP burden, facilitating participation. Initiation of extension studies prior to study close-out may help increase GP and patient participation. Belimumab is approved for active, autoantibody-positive systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis, but limited data exist regarding its use in pregnancy. The Belimumab Pregnancy Registry (BPR, GSK Study BEL114256; NCT01532310) was created to evaluate pregnancy and infant outcomes following belimumab exposure.Individuals with SLE exposed to belimumab from 4 months before and/or during pregnancy can enroll into the BPR. The primary outcome is major birth defects; secondary outcomes include miscarriages, stillbirths, elective termination, pre-term birth, neonatal death, small for gestational age, and adverse infant outcomes during the first year of life. Belimumab exposure timing, concomitant medications, and other potential confounding factors are also collected. Data up to March 8, 2021, are reported descriptively. From an expected sample size target of 500 prospective pregnancies with a known outcome, only 55 were enrolled in the study. Among these, two pregnancy losses and 53 pregnancies with a live birth outcome were reported. Ten of the 53 live birth pregnancies resulted in a major birth defect. Ten pregnancies were enrolled after the pregnancy outcome occurred and were examined retrospectively (four live births with no defects, four miscarriages, and two elective terminations). There was no indication or pattern of birth defects associated with belimumab.Low recruitment numbers for the BPR and incomplete information limit the conclusions regarding belimumab exposure during pregnancy. There was no pattern or common mechanism of birth defects associated with belimumab within the BPR data.

Background Stigma and trust influence how adolescents seek support for mental illness, though it is unclear how these influence their decisions to approach a range of potential sources of support. Moreover, even less is known about the ways in which these issues are related when a friend discloses symptoms of mental illness. Objective The study’s aims were to understand the role of stigma, trust, and threat appraisals in adolescents’ support seeking when exposed to their own, or to a friend’s, symptoms of mental illness. Method A vignette-based study comparing reports of support (friends, parents, teachers, professionals, and online) was completed with reference to either (i) experiencing symptoms of mental illness or (ii) having a friend disclose these types of symptoms. Two hundred and fifty adolescents (M = 12.75 years) answered questions pertaining to stigma (public and self), trust levels, threat appraisals, and support seeking. Results When dealing with their own symptoms, threat accounted for 4.8 and 2.5% of the variance when seeking support from parents and professionals, respectively. Self-stigma accounted for 2.4% of variance when seeking support from parents and 0.8% of variance when seeking support from professionals. Trust moderated the association between threat and the use of online support. When responding to a friend’s disclosure, higher levels of public-stigma were associated with lower support seeking from friends, parents, and professionals. Conclusions This study showed a distinction in how adolescents deal with their own or a friend’s symptoms of mental illness, and what resources they choose to ask for support from. Self-stigma, threat, and trust levels were particularly relevant when experiencing their own symptoms, while dealing with a friend’s disclosure was related to levels of public-stigma.

This study examined the extent to which active and passive sexting behaviors are associated with family-, school-, peer-, and romantic-level variables. Young people (N = 3,322; 49.1% female, 48.3% male, 2.6% other) aged 11 to 15 years old (M = 12.84, SD = 0.89) took part, and all attended mainstream secondary schools in Scotland. Participants completed self-report measures of school connectedness, parental love and support, perceived susceptibility to peer- and romantic-pressure (e.g., to display behaviors just to impress others), and their involvement in active and passive sexting. The importance of both school- and family-level factors was evident, though perceived romantic-pressure had the largest effect. However, neither school- nor family-level variables were moderated by either perceived romantic-pressure or perceived peer-pressure. Efforts to reduce sexting or increase its safety should primarily seek to tackle young people’s ability to respond effectively to romantic-pressure. It may also be helpful to develop school connectedness and to help families provide support that is constructive and not intrusive.

The effects of selenium in rice grain composition depend on the soil nitrogen supply. Selenium and nitrogen have the potential to modify rice grain composition; however, it is unclear how the combined effect of Se and nitrogen affects the grain nutritional quality of rice. In our study, grain Se concentration was positively associated with the increased availability of nitrogen in soil. The accumulation of Se in grain of rice plants treated with Se combined with nitrogen was accompanied by an increase in expression of NRT1.1B, a rice nitrate transporter and sensor, in root. Moreover, Se potentiates the response of nitrogen supply in expression of sulfate transporter OsSULTR1.2, phosphate transporter OsPT2 and silicon transporter OsNIP2.1 in root, thereby increasing root Se uptake capacity. The combination of Se with high nitrogen increased the concentrations of protein, carbohydrates, Se, Mo and Mg, but decreased concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in grain. Overall, our results revealed that many of the effects of Se in rice grain composition are due to a shift in the nitrogen status of the plant.

Purpose To assess the feasibility of using Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) data for identifying populations of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) eligible for a hypothetical pragmatic trial. Methods A retrospective multidatabase cohort study using CPRD primary care and linked secondary care data to describe the characteristics of populations of patients with COPD. Patients' demographic and lifestyle factors, comorbidity profile, spirometry measurements and treatment changes were evaluated, as was the distribution of follow‐up time and types of losses during follow‐up. Characteristics were evaluated using descriptive statistics. Results A total of 322 991 patients from 1148 primary care practices in the United Kingdom across two CPRD primary care databases, CPRD GOLD and CPRD Aurum, were potentially eligible to participate in a hypothetical trial using CPRD, starting on 31 December 2017. Patients with COPD in CPRD GOLD and CPRD Aurum were comparable in terms of age (median age 70 vs. 68 years), gender (50% vs. 52% male), disease severity (e.g., 25% vs. 24% Medical Research Council [MRC] dyspnoea score grades 3–5) and history of respiratory conditions (e.g., 43% vs. 38% asthma). High proportions of patients with COPD in CPRD GOLD and CPRD Aurum were available on 31 December 2012 for follow‐up at 1, 2, and 5 years (92%, 85% and 67%, respectively). Conclusions Patients and data from CPRD GOLD and CPRD Aurum were comparable across key aspects relevant to COPD trials. A pragmatic trial using CPRD to recruit patients with COPD is scientifically feasible.

The EOSOLAR project was designed to investigate the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer in an equatorial coastal zone, where the discontinuity of surface conditions induces non-stationarity gradients of wind speeds and the development of internal boundary layers. The proposed methodology considers several aspects of the sea–land transition meteorology that are essential for precisely estimating wind–solar energy potential and assessment of structural loads on wind turbines. Infrared (LIDAR) and acoustic (SODAR) ground-based remote sensing instruments and micrometeorological towers were installed in a near-shore equatorial area of northeast Brazil, in order to provide a comprehensive view of meteorological processes. This paper reports a description of the project study area, methodology, and instrumentation used. Details of instruments configurations, a validation of micrometeorology towers, and a comparison between the LIDAR and SODAR are presented. Results of the first field campaign measuring the coastal flow, integrating the micrometeorological tower and LIDAR observations are described.

ObjectiveDescribe available data on birth defects and pregnancy loss in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) exposed to belimumab.MethodsData collected from belimumab clinical trials, the Belimumab Pregnancy Registry (BPR), and postmarketing/spontaneous reports up to 8 March 2020 were described. Belimumab exposure timing, concomitant medications and potential confounding factors were summarised descriptively.ResultsAmong 319 pregnancies with known outcomes (excluding elective terminations), 223 ended in live births from which birth defects were identified in 4/72 (5.6%) in belimumab-exposed pregnancies and 0/9 placebo-exposed pregnancies across 18 clinical trials, 10/46 (21.7%) belimumab-exposed pregnancies in the BPR prospective cohort (enrolled prior to pregnancy outcome) and 0/4 belimumab-exposed pregnancies in the BPR retrospective cohort (enrolled after pregnancy outcome), and 1/92 (1.1%) in belimumab-exposed pregnancies from postmarketing/spontaneous reports. There was no consistent pattern of birth defects across datasets. Out of pregnancies with known outcomes (excluding elective terminations), pregnancy loss occurred in 31.8% (35/110) of belimumab-exposed women and 43.8% (7/16) of placebo-exposed women in clinical trials; 4.2% (2/48) of women in the BPR prospective cohort and 50% (4/8) in the BPR retrospective cohort; and 31.4% (43/137) of belimumab-exposed women from postmarketing/spontaneous reports. All belimumab-exposed women in clinical trials and the BPR received concomitant medications and had confounding factors and/or missing data.ConclusionsObservations reported here add to limited data published on pregnancy outcomes following belimumab exposure. Low numbers of exposed pregnancies, presence of confounding factors/other biases, and incomplete information preclude informed recommendations regarding risk of birth defects and pregnancy loss with belimumab use.

Background Estimates for lung function decline in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have differed by study setting and have not been described in a UK primary care population. Purpose To describe rates of FEV1 and FVC decline in COPD and investigate characteristics associated with accelerated decline. Patients and Methods Current/ex-smoking COPD patients (35 years+) who had at least 2 FEV1 or FVC measurements ≥6 months apart were included using Clinical Practice Research Datalink. Patients were followed up for a maximum of 13 years. Accelerated rate of lung function decline was defined as the fastest quartile of decline using mixed linear regression, and association with baseline characteristics was investigated using logistic regression. Results A total of 72,683 and 50,649 COPD patients had at least 2 FEV1 or FVC measurements, respectively. Median rates of FEV1 and FVC changes or decline were −18.1mL/year (IQR: −31.6 to −6.0) and −22.7mL/year (IQR: −39.9 to −6.7), respectively. Older age, high socioeconomic status, being underweight, high mMRC dyspnoea and frequent AECOPD or severe AECOPD were associated with an accelerated rate of FEV1 and FVC decline. Current smoking, mild airflow obstruction and inhaled corticosteroid treatment were additionally associated with accelerated FEV1 decline whilst women, sputum production and severe airflow obstruction were associated with accelerated FVC decline. Conclusion Rate of FEV1 and FVC decline was similar and showed similar heterogeneity. Whilst FEV1 and FVC shared associations with baseline characteristics, a few differences highlighted the importance of both lung function measures in COPD progression. We identified important characteristics that should be monitored for disease progression.
