The aim of this work is to confirm the theoretical possibility of an epigenetic mechanism shared between EMIT and UHD. The presentation will be divided in three sections: 1. Water aggregates with an electric dipole moment (UHD succussed solutions) as mediators of weak specific bioelectromagnetic signals on target stem cells. Recent experimental works confirm the developing concept of water mediated Electromagnetic Information Transfer (EMIT) of specific molecular signals, picked up from the source biological effector, on target stem cells with evident effect on their proliferation [1]. Similar Electromagnetic (EM) emission and consequences are also reported by the scientific literature on rotational excited aggregates with an electric dipole moment, created in polar liquids by Ultra High Diluted (UHD) or High Diluted (HD) succussed solutions. These aggregates are composed of solvent molecules only or a combination of these and solute particles [2]. 2. DNA mediated physiopathological effects of ELF EMFs In detail, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the extremely low-frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are classified as "possible carcinogenic" based on their effects [3-5], although most scientists agree that they are too weak to kill cells or to cause mutations and thus initiate cancer. Besides the prevailing paradigm of the environmentally-induced acute and chronic diseases involving either cell killing (cytotoxicity) or gene/chromosome mutations (genotoxicity), many studies concerning the biological and health consequences of ELF-EM exposure report that alteration of the expression of genetic information at the transcriptional, translational, or posttranslational levels has the potential to contribute to various diseases. 3. Epigenetic mechanism shared between EMIT and UHDs The latter referred mechanism, denoted as "epigenetic" (that affects gene expression rather than gene structure), is characterized by threshold-like action, multiple biochemical pathways and it needs chronic regular exposures to be effective [6]. Epigenetic factors affect one of four potential cell states, namely alteration of cell proliferation, cell differentiation, programmed cell death (apoptosis) or adaptive responses of differentiated cells, and probably they act as co-inductors of DNA damage rather than as a genotoxic agents per se. At the present time, studies on genomic and functional genetic are identifying many genes and gene variants that potentially modulate the fundamental molecular mechanisms underpinning both physiological and pathological processes.

Wheat grain (Triticum aestivum L.) possesses significant amounts of antioxidants that contribute to the dietary antiradical protection against a number of chronic diseases. Despite the increasing interest in organic food among both consumers and scientists, the availability of literature studies concerning the environment effect under organic management is still scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant properties of wheat varieties by considering the genotype response to different environmental factors under biodynamic management.The soluble fraction of phenolic compounds was mainly determined by the environment, whereas a major genotypic effect was observed for the bound forms, which were present at higher amounts in red grain varieties. Moreover, a predominant effect of genotype was observed for yellow pigment content and antioxidant activity determined by the FRAP method. Despite some changes induced by environment, most genotypes had stable antioxidant properties and different phenolic profiles as determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, except for the old variety Inallettabile, which was the most sensitive to environmental fluctuations.The red grain varieties Andriolo, Gentil rosso and Verna were identified as the most promising breeding material for the development of varieties with high nutraceutical value under low-input management. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

The maintenance of the endothelial function, challenged by oxidative stress and inflammation, is a fundamental target of preventive dietary strategies. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective activities of a wheat peptide belonging to the family of the "non-specific lipid transfer protein type 2" (nsLTP2). Results showed that HUVECs pretreatment with nsLTP2 significantly decreased both oxidative stress and cell damage induced by inflammation, and significantly counteracted the increased expression of adhesion molecules (VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin). Moreover, nsLTP2 increased the expression of HO-1, similarly to statins. As HO-1 has been shown to ameliorate inflammation in part through its ability to inhibit expression of endothelial adhesion molecules, experiments were also conducted using two HO-1 inhibitors, showing that the induced expression of HO-1 contributes to the anti-inflammatory activity exerted by nsLTP2. Taken together, obtained results suggest a nutraceutical role played by nsLTP2 in maintaining vascular health. Salinity is today one of the most widespread constraints in irrigated agriculture. Thus, salt tolerance is an agronomically important trait receiving increasing attention among scientists worldwide. Quinoa is tolerant to soil salinity and other adverse environmental factors, hence it attracts the attention of researchers as a possible crop in a changing world scenario in which scarcity of water resources and increasing soil and water salinization are the primary causes of crop loss. Quinoa’s exceptional tolerance to salinity, frost, drought and other types of abiotic stress also makes it a model species for investigating cellular, physiological, biomolecular and morphological mechanisms at the basis of stress tolerance in halophytes and in plants as a whole. There are quinoa ecotypes adapted to valley, highland, salt desert, sea level and tropical environments, displaying broad genetic variability in salinity tolerance. For this reason, quinoa represents a valuable resource for selection of the most suitable material and for breeding new varieties adapted to different environmental and geographical conditions. In this chapter, scientific studies on salinity tolerance in quinoa conducted in the last decade by numerous research groups operating in at least nine different countries are described. We focus on studies in which different quinoa genotypes are compared for their response to saline conditions, demonstrating that salt tolerance is a complex, multigenic trait involving a plethora of physiological and structural adaptations. Results available to date regarding the effect of salinity on the nutritional properties of quinoa are reported.

L’invenzione concerne una composizione e un metodo per promuovere la crescita di piante erbacee, in particolare piante erbacee comprese in tappeti erbosi per uso sportivo o ornamentale e in terreni agricoli, e favorire un accumulo di sostanza organica nel terreno in cui vivono e crescono le suddette piante erbacee.

La salinidad está hoy entre las restricciones más extendidas en la agricultura de regadío. Así, la tolerancia a la sal es un rasgo agronómicamente importante que está recibiendo cada vez más atención entre los científicos de todo el mundo. La quinua es tolerante a la salinidad del suelo y otros factores ambientales adversos, y por consiguiente atrae la atención de los investigadores como un cultivo posible en un escenario mundial cambiante en el que la escasez de los recursos hídricos y el aumento de la salinización del suelo y el agua son las principales causas de la pérdida de cultivos. La tolerancia excepcional de la quinua a la salinidad, heladas, sequías y otros tipos de estrés abiótico también hace que sea una especie modelo para la investigación de los mecanismos celulares, fisiológicos, biomoleculares y morfológicas en la base de la tolerancia al estrés en halófitas y en las plantas en su conjunto. Hay ecotipos de quinua adaptadas al valle, altiplano, salares, el nivel del mar y los trópicos, que muestran una amplia variabilidad genética de la tolerancia a la salinidad. Por esta razón, la quinua representa un recurso valioso para la selección del material más adecuado para la obtención de nuevas variedades adaptadas a diferentes condiciones ambientales y geográficas. En este capítulo, se describen los estudios científicos sobre la tolerancia a la salinidad en la quinua realizados en la última década por numerosos grupos de investigación que operan en al menos nueve países diferentes. Nos centramos en los estudios en los que se comparan diferentes genotipos de quinua por su respuesta a condiciones de salinidad, lo que demuestra que la tolerancia a la sal es un rasgo complejo y multigénico que implica una gran cantidad de adaptaciones fisiológicas y estructurales. Se reportan los resultados disponibles hasta ahora sobre el efecto de la salinidad sobre las propiedades nutricionales de la quinua.

It raises a great deal of recent interest that organic wheat constitutes valuable nutraceutical raw material for healthy food production and special dietary uses. In particular, khorasan wheat (T. turgidum ssp. turanicum) has attracted great attention because of its specific nutritional and functional properties (antioxidant, antitumoral and prebiotic activities). Currently, few data about fibre and antioxidant composition of organically grown Kamut® brand grains is available in literature and, as far as we know, the changes of their amounts as a function of cropping year and growing location have never been investigated. Moreover, this is the first study in which an organically grown crop is investigated in a region of such broad expanse, including several different environments, covering an area of approximately 180,000 km2 . The aim of the research was to provide an overview of the health- -promoting properties of Kamut® brand grains produced at different locations (Canada and USA) and to contribute to the understanding of the environmental dynamics affecting the phytochemical profile. A collection consisting of 109 samples of organic Kamut® brand grains harvested in different farms of North America in 2010, was characterized for agronomic traits, antioxidant compounds (polyphenols, flavonoids) and fibre components (soluble and insoluble dietary fibres, resistant starch). As regards the agronomic performance, the results demonstrated a high heterogeneity among samples. Yield, test weight and protein content varied within the intervals 0.30–1.69 t/ha, 49.2–61.1 kg/hl and 12.6– –16.6 g/100 g, respectively. As previously reported in literature, the content of health-promoting compounds is strongly influenced by environmental conditions. In fact, the investigated wheat grains showed great variability for the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents (133.6–223.4 and 28.6– –63.6 mg/100g, respectively). The insoluble fibre content varied between 12.55 and 20.25 g/100 g, while the soluble dietary fraction showed less heterogeneity(2.70–4.31 g/100 g). Concerning starch, statistically significant differences were observed between farms for the amounts of both the resistant and the total starch (0.22–1.5 and 57.7–66.4 g/100 g, respectively). The results of the research were computed using Geographic Information System (GIS) to develop quality maps that showed the variability of the phytochemical amounts among the North American farms and allowed the identification of areas in which bioactive compounds had accumulated at a higher level in the wheat grains. According to the present results, the choice of a growing location in which the accumulation of health-promoting compounds (i.e. polyphenols, fibres) is stimulated by specific climatic conditions may be a key factor for the production of organic wheat foodstuff as a functional food.

L’odierna crescente richiesta di prodotti naturali, in grado di fornire effetti complessi che le molecole di sintesi non sempre assicurano, ha riaperto l’interesse per le piante officinali motivando la preparazione di un nuovo libro: Produzione ed impiego delle piante officinali. Quest’opera, frutto della collaborazione di un gruppo di specialisti, di seguito elencati, tratta, oltre che gli aspetti agronomici di un buon numero di specie anche il metabolismo, l’utilizzo, l’espressione dei principi attivi, gli aspetti economici e legislativi ed i processi post-raccolta delle piante officinali. Questo volume sostituisce quello di Catizone, Marotti, Toderi, Tétény stampato da Patron nel 1986: Coltivazione delle piante medicinali e aromatiche che, per un quarto di secolo, è stato un punto di riferimento per studenti ed operatori del settore. L’opera vuole fornire la cornice generale ove inquadrare la conoscenza professionale atta al consiglio terapeutico e all’uso delle piante officinali. Le molecole indicate costituiscono la base di conoscenza scientifica per il loro inserimento terapeutico in alcune patologie conclamate e nella medicina preventiva. Le molecole vegetali inserite nei loro naturali fitocomplessi possono realizzare, con l’aiuto del medico, una primaria azione coadiuvante la terapia farmacologica. Le piante officinali, ma anche le piante con i loro frutti ad uso alimentare, danno un valore superiore alla singola molecola che viene attivata e potenziata, nei suoi effetti, da altre molecole in esse contenute. In un tempo, come il nostro, in cui domina la medicina sintomatologica, per ogni segno e sintomo clinico è disponibile uno specifico farmaco, la conoscenza della complessità e specificità delle molecole contenute nelle piante officinali, apre nuove strade per “curare” le cause delle patologie umane ed animali.

I tappeti erbosi progettati per attività sportive e ricreative hanno anche benefici effetti ambientali, come la prevenzione dell’erosione del suolo. I principali problemi di queste superfici sono la predisposizione allo strappo e allo sviluppo di malattie fungine. In questo lavoro si è cercato di investigare se una tecnologia a basso impatto ambientale basata sull’impiego di microrganismi, alternativa ai trattamenti chimici, possa essere usata per migliorare la crescita delle piante e lo sviluppo radicale di Lolium perenne L. E’ stato quindi utilizzato un prodotto commerciale contenente microrganismi (EM•1®; Punto EM, Sanremo, Italy) per il trattamento di L. perenne L. cresciuto in coltura idroponica e i risultati ottenuti sono stati paragonati a quelli derivanti dalla somministrazione dello stesso prodotto sottoposto a filtrazione per eliminare i microrganismi, di una soluzione commerciale contenete fitormoni e di un controllo non trattato. Le piante sono state fatte crescere per 5 settimane, la parte fogliare è stata tagliata, misurata e pesata ad intervalli di una settimana. Alla fine della sperimentazione, sono stati prelevati campioni di radici. Dopo lavaggio, è stato valutato il peso e la lunghezza delle radici. E’ stata inoltre valutata la resistenza allo strappo. Sono stati anche caratterizzati i principali gruppi microbici presenti nel prodotto commerciale attraverso una combinazione di analisi microbiologiche e molecolari. Infine, è stata utilizzata l’analisi PCR-DGGE, accoppiata al sequenziamento delle principali bande, di campioni di suolo e radici per analizzare i profili microbici derivanti da tutti i trattamenti applicati. Le piante trattate col prodotto commerciale contenente microrganismi hanno evidenziato un’aumentata resistenza allo strappo rispetto a quelle sottoposte agli altri trattamento o al controllo e, inoltre, le radici risultano di lunghezza maggiore rispetto al controllo. Entrambe queste caratteristiche sono particolarmente favorevoli per tappeti erbosi progettati per attività sportive e ricreative. La caratterizzazione dei microrganismi presenti nel prodotto ha evidenziato la presenza di specie batteriche e di lieviti che, in letteratura, risultano essere in grado di promuovere la crescita delle piante, come ad esempio Stenothrophomanas maltophilia. Candida utilis e altre specie afferenti al genere Lactobacillus, isolate dal prodotto, si sono rilevate in grado di colonizzare le radici delle piante di L. perenne L. Si può quindi concludere che i trattamenti con microrganismi “efficaci” ha un grosso potenziale per il mantenimento e le performance dei tappeti erbosi.

The mycotoxin contamination of flours is an important concern of the organic sector, in which no fungicide can be applied to the crop. The most common toxin occurring in wheat flours is deoxynivalenol (DON) that belongs to the trichothecene class and is produced by several fungi of the Fusarium genus (mainly F. culmorum and F. graminearum). Two different field experimental trials were set up for two subsequent growing seasons (2009/2010; 2010/2011): 1) comparison between 1 modern (Palesio) and 5 old (Inallettabile, Andriolo, Gentil Rosso, Verna, Frassineto) common wheat varieties under organic farming; 2) comparison between one old durum-type (Kamut®Khorasan) and one modern durum wheat variety (Claudio) under organic farming. Different DON accumulation in the grains was observed comparing the two cropping years as a result of changing weather conditions: wheat varieties grown during the first cropping season presented higher mycotoxin levels (0.19 and 1.19 mg/kg for common and durum wheat, respectively) as compared to those observed in the second year (0.02 and 0.33 mg/kg for common and durum wheat, respectively). The higher DON levels of Kamut and Claudio flours confirmed the higher susceptibility of durum-type wheat to Fusarium head blight, but no differences were observed among genotypes for each wheat species. Interestingly, despite of the interdiction in using fungicides, in common wheat cultivars grown according to organic farming the mycotoxin content was lower than the legislative limits set for all the food categories, as indicated in the current EU regulation (EC N. 1126/2007).
