Enhanced mixing in microfluidic systems is necessary in many applications such as chemical processing, biological assays, and diagnosis. We are developing a microfluidic system to efficiently mix minute reagents (down to several microliters) using vibration-induced flow (VIF), in which a net flow is generated around a micropillar by applying periodic vibration. In this study, we numerically investigate the enhancement in chaotic mixing using the VIF technique and periodic switching of vibrations. By extending our previous numerical simulation model, we investigate the flow field and trajectories of fluid particles in three-dimensional space. We demonstrate that chaotic advection characteristics can be observed by periodically switching the vibrational direction of a substrate using simple cylindrical pillars. In addition, using an appropriate interval for switching the vibration axes yields better mixing performance. The extent of chaotic advection is evaluated quantitatively using the Lyapunov exponent considering various vibration parameters, such as the vibration amplitude, separation distance between each pillar and pillar shape. The flow field induced by a large-amplitude and sharp-edged wall pillar provides excellent mixing results. Period phase gradient metasurface plays a great role in promoting the innovation of acoustic application devices. However, harnessing the internal thermal viscosity of the period phase gradient metasurface to realize sound absorption and non-reciprocal transmission faces the narrow working frequency band and uncontrollable efficiency. In this paper, we propose a lossy metasurface by embedded microperforated walls to realize sound redirection and absorption with high efficiency than 90% simultaneously. The phase modulation is realized using an opening channel, which can cover the 2 π phase range in a broadband frequency range by changing the channel depth. The loss introduced by the microperforated walls can achieve efficient sound energy dissipation when negative reflection occurs. The functions can be switched between wave redirection and wave absorption by rotating the metasurface. In addition, this metasurface can redirect the incident wave below −10° and absorb the incident wave above 25° over a wide frequency range from 1500 to 6500 Hz. The simulation and experiment results of our design are in excellent agreement. This research provided a new bridge to integrate wave redirection and absorption with microperforated walls and may have potential applications in acoustic sensing, sound source identification, and mechanical fault diagnosis. Despite much progress, image processing remains a significant bottleneck for high-throughput analysis of microscopy data. One popular platform for single-cell time-lapse imaging is the mother machine, which enables long-term tracking of microbial cells under precisely controlled growth conditions. While several mother machine image analysis pipelines have been developed in the past several years, adoption by a non-expert audience remains a challenge. To fill this gap, we implemented our own software, MM3, as a plugin for the multidimensional image viewer napari. napari-MM3 is a complete and modular image analysis pipeline for mother machine data, which takes advantage of the high-level interactivity of napari. Here, we give an overview of napari-MM3 and test it against several well-designed and widely used image analysis pipelines, including BACMMAN and DeLTA. Researchers often analyze mother machine data with custom scripts using varied image analysis methods, but a quantitative comparison of the output of different pipelines has been lacking. To this end, we show that key single-cell physiological parameter correlations and distributions are robust to the choice of analysis method. However, we also find that small changes in thresholding parameters can systematically alter parameters extracted from single-cell imaging experiments. Moreover, we explicitly show that in deep learning-based segmentation, what you put is what you get (WYPIWYG) - that is, pixel-level variation in training data for cell segmentation can propagate to the model output and bias spatial and temporal measurements. Finally, while the primary purpose of this work is to introduce the image analysis software that we have developed over the last decade in our lab, we also provide information for those who want to implement mother machine-based high-throughput imaging and analysis methods in their research.

BackgroundVagal afferent neurons represent the key neurosensory branch of the gut-brain axis, which describes the bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal system and the brain. These neurons are important for detecting and relaying sensory information from the periphery to the central nervous system to modulate feeding behavior, metabolism, and inflammation. Confounding variables complicate the process of isolating the role of the vagal afferents in mediating these physiological processes. Therefore, we developed a microfluidic model of the sensory branch of the gut-brain axis. We show that this microfluidic model successfully compartmentalizes the cell body and neurite terminals of the neurons, thereby simulates the anatomical layout of these neurons to more accurately study physiologically-relevant processes.MethodsWe implemented a primary rat vagal afferent neuron culture into a microfluidic platform consisting of two concentric chambers interconnected with radial microchannels. The microfluidic platform separated cell bodies from neurite terminals of vagal afferent neurons. We then introduced physiologically-relevant gastrointestinal effector molecules at the nerve terminals and assessed their retrograde transport along the neurite or capacity to elicit an electrophysiological response using live cell calcium imaging.ResultsThe angle of microchannel outlets dictated the probability of neurites growing into a chamber versus tracking along chamber walls. When the neurite terminals were exposed to fluorescently-labeled cholera toxin subunit B, the proteins were taken up and retrogradely transported along the neurites over the course of 24 h. Additionally, mechanical perturbation (e.g., rinsing) of the neurite terminals significantly increased intracellular calcium concentration in the distal soma. Finally, membrane-displayed receptor for capsaicin was expressed and trafficked along newly projected neurites, as revealed by confocal microscopy.ConclusionsIn this work, we developed a microfluidic device that can recapitulate the anatomical layout of vagal afferent neurons in vitro. We demonstrated two physiologically-relevant applications of the platforms: retrograde transport and electrophysiological response. We expect this tool to enable controlled studies on the role of vagal afferent neurons in the gut-brain axis.

Flow-based microfluidic biochips are presently designed, verified, and physically laid out manually. Software automation, similar to that employed for integrated circuits in the semiconductor industry, will raise productivity and reduce the cost of using biochips in scientific experiments.

The demolding process in micro-injection molding constitutes a critical phase, exerting a decisive influence on the quality of polymer microstructures. In this study, the demolding forces of PMMA microfluidic chips were measured under different demolding temperatures, packing pressures, and demolding speeds by using pure nickel (Ni) mold insert. The dimensional deviations of the microchannels with different aspect ratios were analyzed. In addition, the effect of mold insert modification on the demolding force was further analyzed. The results showed that the effect of demolding temperature on the demolding force was the most significant, and the peak demolding force decreased with the decrease in temperature. The width of the microchannels increased and the depth decreased after demolding, while the opposite results were observed for the micro-mixing structures. However, the dimensional deviation of the micromixing structures was larger than that of the microchannels. Using the optimal molding parameters, the peak demolding force could be reduced from 114.0 N at 110[degrees]C to 47.0 N, a decrease of 58.8%. It is noteworthy that, when the microchannel was narrower than 100 [micro]m, achieving precise replication of microchannel dimensions became progressively more challenging as the microchannel width decreased. Using the Ni-W[S.sub.2] mold insert with low surface energy and low friction coefficient, the demolding force could be further reduced by 38.3%. The effect of the molding quality of microfluidic chip microstructures on the mixing performance of heavy metals was demonstrated by micro-mixing experiments. The primary purpose of this study is to provide more information on the stable and incompressible stream of a hybrid nanofluid over a poignant tiny needle in two dimensions under slip boundary conditions. In the hybrid nanofluid flow, Al2O3 and Fe3O4 are nanoparticles, water and ethylene glycol (50:50) are considered as the base fluids. Furthermore, the impacts of Joule heating and inclined magnetic fields are considered. The PDE's governing equations are converted into ODEs by using similarity transformations and solved by a numerical technique based on Runge–Kutta fourth-order method. The results illustrate that the crucial parameters such as the magnetic parameter, Eckert number, nanoparticles of solid volume fractions, inclined angle parameter, and Prandtl numbers significantly affect the momentum and thermal profiles. The heat transfer rate and skin friction factors are used to calculate the numerical values of various parameters, which are displayed in a table. These analyses manifest that raising the magnetic parameter results in a decrease in the hybrid nanofluid velocity under slip and no-slip circumstances. The Nusselt number has also grown as a result of the volumetric fractions of nanoparticles and the intensification of the angle parameter. This analysis might include areas such as microfluidics, biomedical devices, heat exchangers, and other engineering applications where precise control over fluid behavior and temperature distribution is important. Microcarrier is a promising drug delivery system demonstrating significant value in treating cancers. One of the main goals is to devise microcarriers with ingenious structures and functions to achieve better therapeutic efficacy in tumors. Here, inspired by the nucleus-cytoplasm structure of cells and the material exchange reaction between them, we develop a type of biorthogonal compartmental microparticles (BCMs) from microfluidics that can separately load and sequentially release cyclooctene-modified doxorubicin prodrug (TCO-DOX) and tetrazine-modified indocyanine green (Tz-ICG) for tumor therapy. The Tz-ICG works not only as an activator for TCO-DOX but also as a photothermal agent, allowing for the combination of bioorthogonal chemotherapy and photothermal therapy (PTT). Besides, the modification of DOX with cyclooctene significantly decreases the systemic toxicity of DOX. As a result, the developed BCMs demonstrate efficient in vitro tumor cell eradication and exhibit notable tumor growth inhibition with favorable safety. These findings illustrate that the formulated BCMs establish a platform for bioorthogonal prodrug activation and localized delivery, holding significant potential for cancer therapy and related applications. [Display omitted] Microcapsules with osmotically-inflated elastic shells exhibit an ultrafast release of encapsulants while mechanically stimulating the microenvironments, akin to popping balloons. To prepare elastic shells with uniform thickness and size, monodisperse water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) double-emulsion drops are produced in a capillary microfluidic device. The polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-containing oil phase is thermally cured to create the elastic shell. The elastic shells are inflated by pumping water into the lumen in hypotonic conditions. The inflated microcapsules produced undergo mechanical compression, and their release properties are studied. By controlling the osmotic pressure difference, Microballoons are inflated into a diameter of 200 μm – 316 μm and shell thickness of 7.8 μm – 0.7 µm, respectively. The inflated shell pops due to mechanical failure when subjected to mechanical stress above a certain threshold, resembling a balloon. During popping, the stretched shell rapidly retracts to the original uninflated state, resulting in an ultrafast release of encapsulants from the lumen within a millisecond. This process converts elastic potential energy stored in the shell into mechanical energy with substantial power. The microballoons mechanically stimulate the local environment, leading to the direct and rapid release of encapsulants. This has the potential to improve absorption efficiency. Microvortices are emerging components that impart functionality to microchannels by exploiting inertia effects such as high shear stress, effective fluid diffusion, and large pressure loss. Exploring the dynamic generation of vortices further expands the scope of microfluidic applications, including cell stimulation, fluid mixing, and transport. Despite the crucial role of vortices' development within sub-millisecond timescales, previous studies in microfluidics did not explore the modulation of the Reynolds number (Re) in the range of several hundred. In this study, we modulated high-speed flows (54 < Re < 456) within sub-millisecond timescales using a piezo-driven on-chip membrane pump. By applying this method to microchannels with asymmetric geometries, we successfully controlled the spatiotemporal development of vortices, adjusting their behavior in response to oscillatory flow directions. These different vortices induced different pressure losses, imparting the microchannels with direction-dependent flow resistance, mimicking a diode-like behavior. Through precise control of vortex development, we managed to regulate this direction-dependent resistance, enabling the rectification of oscillatory flow resembling a diode and the ability to switch its rectification direction. This component facilitated bidirectional flow control without the need for mechanical valves. Moreover, we demonstrated its application in microfluidic cell pipetting, enabling the isolation of single cells. Consequently, based on modulating high-speed flow, our approach offers precise control over the spatiotemporal development of vortices in microstructures, thereby introducing innovative microfluidic functionalities. This study focuses on the use of pulsed electric fields (PEF) in microfluidics for controlled cell studies. The commonly used material for soft lithography, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), does not fully ensure the necessary chemical and mechanical resistance in these systems. Integration of specific analytical measurement setups into microphysiological systems (MPS) are also challenging. We present an off-stoichiometry thiol-ene (OSTE)-based microchip, containing integrated electrodes for PEF and transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) measurement and the equipment to monitor pH and oxygen concentration in situ. The effectiveness of the MPS was empirically demonstrated through PEF treatment of the C6 cells. The effects of PEF treatment on cell viability and permeability to the fluorescent dye DapI were tested in two modes: stop flow and continuous flow. The maximum permeability was achieved at 1.8 kV/cm with 16 pulses in stop flow mode and 64 pulses per cell in continuous flow mode, without compromising cell viability. Two integrated sensors detected changes in oxygen concentration before and after the PEF treatment, and the pH shifted towards alkalinity following PEF treatment. Therefore, our proof-of-concept technology serves as an MPS for PEF treatment of mammalian cells, enabling in situ physiological monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work introduces a novel microfluidic backpressure pressure control developed for chip-based supercritical fluid chromatography (chipSFC). The presented on-chip pressure control mechanism involves the post-column addition of a viscous make-up stream, which enables pressure regulation within the range of 73 to 130 bar range. In contrast to approaches using mechanical backpressure regulators, this chip-based make-up-assisted pressure regulation offers a wear-free alternative that functions entirely through fluidic means and contributes minimally to extra column volume. It prevents phase separation of the supercritical mobile phase and, therefore, expands the analytical scope of chipSFC to detection systems with an ambient pressure interface. The challenges of replicating the complex mechanical and structural diversity of natural tissues in vitro by leveraging multi‐material digital light processing (DLP) bioprinting are addressed. This technique utilizes PEGDA‐AAm bio‐ink to develop multi‐component, cell‐laden hydrogel constructs with varying moduli. These constructs not only possess heterogeneous mechanical properties but also feature complex architectures and precisely engineered surface microstructures. The hydrogel microfluidic chips are successfully fabricated with perfusable microchannels, embedding various cell types within the matrix. This approach enables the bioprinting of intricate cell‐laden structures with unique surface topologies, such as spiral grooves and triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS), which effectively influence cell alignment, spreading, and migration. By integrating various cell‐laden PA hydrogels, the diverse mechanical moduli of biological tissues, including bone, liver lobules, and vascular networks are replicated. This technique ensures high‐fidelity differentiation between cell types and regions. These findings provide valuable insights into the impact of substrate modulus and structure on cell behavior, underscoring the potential of multi‐component, multi‐modulus hydrogel constructs in creating sophisticated structures with custom‐tailored mechanical properties. Microfluidic valves play a key role within microfluidic systems by regulating fluid flow through distinct microchannels, enabling many advanced applications in medical diagnostics, lab‐on‐chips, and laboratory automation. While microfluidic systems are often limited to planar structures, 3D printing enables new capabilities to generate complex designs for fluidic circuits with higher densities and integrated components. However, the control of fluids within 3D structures presents several difficulties, making it challenging to scale effectively and many fluidic devices are still often restricted to quasi‐planar structures. Incorporating mechanical metamaterials that exhibit spatially adjustable mechanical properties into microfluidic systems provides an opportunity to address these challenges. Here, systematic computational and experimental characterization of a modified re‐entrant honeycomb structure are performed to generate a modular metamaterial for an active device that allows us to directly regulate flow through integrated, multiplexed fluidic channels "one‐at‐a‐time," in a manner that is highly scalable. A design algorithm is presented, so that this architecture can be extended to arbitrary geometries, and it is expected that by incorporation of mechanical metamaterial designs into 3D printed fluidic systems, which themselves are readily expandable to any complex geometries, will enable new biotechnological and biomedical applications of 3D printed devices. Granular hydrogels have emerged as a promising class of biomaterials in medical research, enabling independent control of matrix stiffness within a porous biomaterial. Such microgel packings comprise interconnected pores and high surface‐to‐volume ratios. These features facilitate cell viability and nutrient diffusion, which are critical in enabling tissue regeneration. Despite the current interest in granular hydrogels for tissue engineering applications, only a few in vitro platforms are used to investigate cell interactions, limiting their design, and translation. In this study, microfluidic platforms able to reproducibly confine and immobilize microgels without the need for secondary cross‐linking are developed. Protocols are established for the generation of human bone marrow‐derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (hBM‐MSC)‐infiltrated microporous substrates and early‐time responses of cells to their environment are studied. Further, a tissue invasion assay is established, where cells infiltrate granular materials at different rates depending on growth factor presence or material properties. This platform is compatible with a range of different granular materials, and it is envisioned to have significant utility as a pre‐clinical tool for the rational design of materials for tissue healing applications. CRISPR-based (Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats-based) technologies have revolutionized molecular biology and diagnostics, offering unprecedented precision and versatility. However, challenges remain, such as high costs, demanding technical expertise, and limited quantification capabilities. To overcome these limitations, innovative microfluidic platforms are emerging as powerful tools for enhancing CRISPR diagnostics. This review explores the exciting intersection of CRISPR and microfluidics, highlighting their potential to revolutionize healthcare diagnostics. By integrating CRISPR's specificity with microfluidics' miniaturization and automation, researchers are developing more sensitive and portable diagnostic tools for a range of diseases. These microfluidic devices streamline sample processing, improve diagnostic performance, and enable point-of-care applications, allowing for rapid and accurate detection of pathogens, genetic disorders, and other health conditions. The review discusses various CRISPR/Cas systems, including Cas9, Cas12, and Cas13, and their integration with microfluidic platforms. It also examines the advantages and limitations of these systems, highlighting their potential for detecting DNA and RNA biomarkers. The review also explores the key challenges in developing and implementing CRISPR-driven microfluidic diagnostics, such as ensuring robustness, minimizing cross-contamination, and achieving robust quantification. Finally, it highlights potential future directions for this rapidly evolving field, emphasizing the transformative potential of these technologies for personalized medicine and global health. The interaction of perfluorinated molecules, also known as "forever chemicals" due to their pervasiveness, with their environment remains an important yet poorly understood topic. In this work, the self‐assembly of perfluorinated molecules with multivalent hosts, pillar‐[5]‐arenes, is investigated. It is found that perfluoroalkyl diacids and pillar‐[5]‐arenes rapidly and strongly complex with each other at aqueous interfaces, forming solid interfacially templated films. Their complexation is shown to be driven primarily by fluorophilic aggregation and assisted by electrostatic interactions, as supported by the crystal structure of the complexes, and leads to the formation of quasi‐2D phase‐separated films. This self‐assembly process can be further manipulated using aqueous two‐phase system microdroplets, enabling the controlled formation of 3D micro‐scaffolds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Colorimetric sensing offers instant reporting via visible signals. Versus labor-intensive and instrument-dependent detection methods, colorimetric sensors present advantages including short acquisition time, high throughput screening, low cost, portability, and a user-friendly approach. These advantages have driven substantial growth in colorimetric sensors, particularly in point-of-care (POC) diagnostics. Rapid progress in nanotechnology, materials science, microfluidics technology, biomarker discovery, digital technology, and signal pattern analysis has led to a variety of colorimetric reagents and detection mechanisms, which are fundamental to advance colorimetric sensing applications. This review first summarizes the basic components (e.g., color reagents, recognition interactions, and sampling procedures) in the design of a colorimetric sensing system. It then presents the rationale design and typical examples of POC devices, e.g., lateral flow devices, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices, and wearable sensing devices. Two highlighted colorimetric formats are discussed: combinational and activatable systems based on the sensor-array and lock-and-key mechanisms, respectively. Case discussions in colorimetric assays are organized by the analyte identities. Finally, the review presents challenges and perspectives for the design and development of colorimetric detection schemes as well as applications. The goal of this review is to provide a foundational resource for developing colorimetric systems and underscoring the colorants and mechanisms that facilitate the continuing evolution of POC sensors. Microfluidic devices with integrated membranes that enable control of mass transport in constrained environments have shown considerable growth over the last decade. Membranes are a key component in several industrial processes such as chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnological, food, and metallurgy separation processes as well as waste management applications, allowing for modular and compact systems. Moreover, the miniaturization of a process through microfluidic devices leads to process intensification together with reagents, waste and cost reduction, and energy and space savings. The combination of membrane technology and microfluidic devices allows therefore magnification of their respective advantages, providing more valuable solutions not only for industrial processes but also for reproducing biological processes. This review focuses on membrane-based microfluidic devices for biomedical science with an emphasis on microfluidic artificial organs and organs-on-chip. We provide the basic concepts of membrane technology and the laws governing mass transport. The role of the membrane in biomedical microfluidic devices, along with the required properties, available materials, and current challenges are summarized. We believe that the present review may be a starting point and a resource for researchers who aim to replicate a biological phenomenon on-chip by applying membrane technology, for moving forward the biomedical applications. Despite the great research interest in two‐dimensional metal nanowire networks (2D MNWNs) due to their large specific surface area and abundance of unsaturated coordination atoms, their controllable synthesis still remains a significant challenge. Herein, a microfluidics laminar flow‐based approach is developed, enabling the facile preparation of large‐scale 2D structures with diverse alloy compositions, such as PtBi, AuBi, PdBi, PtPdBi, and PtAuCu alloys. Remarkably, these 2D MNWNs can reach sizes up to submillimeter scale (~220 μm), which is significantly larger than the evolution from the 1D or 3D counterparts that typically measure only tens of nanometers. The PdBi 2D MNWNs affords the highest specific activity for formic acid (2669.1 mA mg−1) among current unsupported catalysts, which is 103.5 times higher than Pt‐black, respectively. Furthermore, in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) experiments provide comprehensive evidence that PdBi 2D MNWNs catalysts can effectively prevent CO* poisoning, resulting in exceptional activity and stability for the oxidation of formic acid. The gut is a digestive organ that absorbs nutrients but also plays a vital role in immune response and defense against external compounds. The complex interaction between the gut microbiota and other organs including the immune system of the host has been known in various contexts, yielding the notion of 'axes' between the gut and other organs. While the presence of various gut-organ axes has been reported, the lack of adequate in vitro model systems for studying this interaction has restricted a deeper insight into these phenomena. Recently developed microphysiological systems (MPS), also known as organ-on-a-chip, allow researchers to study complex interactions between diverse organs, and here we provide a review of how recently developed gut-on-a-chip systems are used for building models of various diseases that were difficult to study. Compared with the conventional emulsification method, droplets generated within microfluidic devices exhibit distinct advantages such as precise control of fluids, exceptional monodispersity, uniform morphology, flexible manipulation, and narrow size distribution. These inherent benefits, including intrinsic safety, excellent heat and mass transfer capabilities, and large surface‐to‐volume ratio, have led to the widespread applications of droplet‐based microfluidics across diverse fields, encompassing chemical engineering, particle synthesis, biological detection, diagnostics, emulsion preparation, and pharmaceuticals. However, despite its promising potential for versatile applications, the practical utilization of this technology in commercial and industrial is extremely limited to the inherently low production rates achievable within a single microchannel. Over the past two decades, droplet‐based microfluidics has evolved significantly, considerably transitioning from a proof‐of‐concept stage to industrialization. And now there is a growing trend towards translating academic research into commercial and industrial applications, primarily driven by the burgeoning demands of various fields. This paper comprehensively reviews recent advancements in droplet‐based microfluidics, covering the fundamental working principles and the critical aspect of scale‐up integration from working principles to scale‐up integration. Stable regulation of protein fate is a prerequisite for successful bone tissue repair. As a ubiquitin‐specific protease (USP), USP26 can stabilize the protein fate of β‐catenin to promote the osteogenic activity of mesenchymal cells (BMSCs) and significantly increased bone regeneration in bone defects in aged mice. However, direct transfection of Usp26 in vivo is inefficient. Therefore, improving the efficient expression of USP26 in target cells is the key to promoting bone tissue repair. Herein, 3D printing combined with microfluidic technology is applied to construct a functional microunit (protein fate regulating functional microunit, denoted as PFFM), which includes GelMA microspheres loaded with BMSCs overexpressing Usp26 and seeded into PCL 3D printing scaffolds. The PFFM provides a microenvironment for BMSCs, significantly promotes adhesion, and ensures cell activity and Usp26 supplementation that stabilizes β‐catenin protein significantly facilitates BMSCs to express osteogenic phenotypes. In vivo experiments have shown that PFFM effectively accelerates intervertebral bone fusion. Therefore, PFFM can provide new ideas and alternatives for using USP26 for intervertebral fusion and other hard‐to‐repair bone defect diseases and is expected to provide clinical translational potential in future treatments. Cancer poses a significant health challenge, with traditional treatments like surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy often lacking in cell specificity and long‐term curative potential. Chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR‐T) therapy,utilizing genetically engineered T cells to target cancer cells, is a promising alternative. However, its high cost limits widespread application. CAR‐T manufacturing process encompasses three stages: cell isolation and activation, transfection, and expansion.While the first and last stages have straightforward, commercially available automation technologies, the transfection stage lags behind. Current automated transfection relies on viral vectors or bulk electroporation, which have drawbacks such as limited cargo capacity and significant cell disturbance. Conversely, micro and nano‐tool methods offer higher throughput and cargo flexibility, yet their automation remains underexplored.In this perspective, the progress in micro and nano‐engineering tools for CAR‐T transfection followed by a discussion to automate them is described. It is anticipated that this work can inspire the community working on micro and nano transfection techniques to examine how their protocols can be automated to align with the growing interest in automating CAR‐T manufacturing. In stereolithographic (SLA) 3D printing, objects are constructed by exposing layers of photocurable resin to UV light. It is a highly user-friendly fabrication method that opens a possibility for technology sharing through CAD file online libraries. Here, we present a prototyping procedure of a microfluidics-enhanced dot-blot device (Affiblot) designed for simple and inexpensive screening of affinity molecule characteristics (antibodies, oligonucleotides, cell receptors, etc.). The incorporation of microfluidic features makes sample processing user-friendly, less time-consuming, and less laborious, all performed completely on-device, distinguishing it from other dot-blot devices. Initially, the Affiblot device was fabricated using CNC machining, which required significant investment in manual post-processing and resulted in low reproducibility. Utilization of SLA 3D printing reduced the amount of manual post-processing, which significantly streamlined the prototyping process. Moreover, it enabled the fabrication of previously impossible features, including internal fluidic channels. While 3D printing of sub-millimeter microchannels usually requires custom-built printers, we were able to fabricate microfluidic features on a readily available commercial printer. Open microchannels in the size range 200–300 μm could be fabricated with reliable repeatability and sealed with a replaceable foil. Economic aspects of device fabrication are also discussed. The combination of 3D‐printing technology and microfluidics has garnered widespread interest for creating new designs and has opened a large window for creativity. However, some laboratories do not have the necessary technology to explore this potential advantage. In this paper, we demonstrate how to explore target technologies to fabricate a single version of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)‐based electroanalytical platform using a low‐cost protocol and disposable materials. This protocol is cost‐effective in terms of equipment and materials, allowing for the creation of a circular channel, a T‐junction system, and two designs of electrochemical detectors customized onto a single platform. The interesting new device has some important characteristics, such as fabrication following green and sustainable protocols. Additionally, it can address the limitations associated with flow‐based analysis, for which the classical three‐electrode configuration is inadequate. It has also demonstrated the feasibility of using the device in analytical applications for the determination of salicylic acid in commercial dermocosmetic samples, including aqueous samples. In the context of advanced nanomaterials research, nanogels (NGs) have recently gained broad attention for their versatility and promising biomedical applications. To date, a significant number of NGs have been developed to meet the growing demands in various fields of biomedical research. Summarizing preparation methods, physicochemical and biological properties, and recent applications of NGs may be useful to help explore new directions for their development. This article presents a comprehensive overview of the latest NG synthesis methodologies, highlighting advances in formulation with different types of hydrophilic or amphiphilic polymers. It also underlines recent biomedical applications of NGs in drug delivery and imaging, with a short section dedicated to biosafety considerations of these innovative nanomaterials. Simple Summary: The development and use of migrastatic drugs could help improve the outcomes for patients with high-grade non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer and muscle-invasive bladder cancer by inhibiting bladder cancer cell invasion and thereby decreasing the likelihood of disease progression and metastasis. A key barrier to this is the lack of suitable models to assess bladder cancer cell invasiveness. Here, we describe a bladder cancer-on-a-chip model. We demonstrate that our model supports the retention of the bladder cancer cell phenotype and can be used to reproducibly assess and quantify the invasiveness of live bladder cancer cells. Treatment with ATN-161, a well-known migrastatic drug, caused a dose-dependent decrease in bladder cancer cell invasiveness thereby validating the ability of our model to test migrastatic drugs. To our knowledge, a bladder cancer-on-a-chip model that can specifically assess bladder cancer invasiveness has not previously been described. We have developed a bladder cancer-on-a-chip model which supports the 3D growth of cells and can be used to assess and quantify bladder cancer cell invasiveness in a physiologically appropriate environment. Three bladder cancer cell lines (T24, J82, and RT4) were resuspended in 50% Matrigel® and grown within a multi-channel organ-on-a-chip system. The ability of live cells to invade across into an adjacent 50% Matrigel®-only channel was assessed over a 2-day period. Cell lines isolated from patients with high-grade bladder cancer (T24 and J82) invaded across into the Matrigel®-only channel at a much higher frequency compared to cells isolated from a patient with low-grade cancer (RT4) (p < 0.001). The T24 and J82 cells also invaded further distances into the Matrigel®-only channel compared to the RT4 cells (p < 0.001). The cell phenotype within the model was maintained as assessed by cell morphology and immunohistochemical analysis of E-cadherin. Treatment with ATN-161, an α5β1 integrin inhibitor and well-known migrastatic drug, caused a dose-dependent decrease in the invasiveness of the J82 cells (p < 0.01). The combined data demonstrate that our bladder cancer-on-a-chip model supports the retention of the bladder cancer cell phenotype and can be used to reproducibly assess and quantify the invasiveness of live bladder cancer cells. In experiments considering cell handling in microchannels, cell sedimentation in the storage container is a key problem because it affects the reproducibility of the experiments. Here, a simple and low-cost cell mixing device (CMD) is presented; the device is designed to prevent the sedimentation of cells in a syringe during their injection into a microfluidic channel. The CMD is based on a slider crank device made of 3D-printed parts that, combined with a permanent magnet, actuate a stir bar placed into the syringe containing the cells. By using A549 cell lines, the device is characterized in terms of cell viability (higher than 95%) in different mixing conditions, by varying the oscillation frequency and the overall mixing time. Then, a dedicated microfluidic experiment is designed to evaluate the injection frequency of the cells within a microfluidic chip. In the presence of the CMD, a higher number of cells are injected into the microfluidic chip with respect to the static conditions (2.5 times), proving that it contrasts cell sedimentation and allows accurate cell handling. With the continuous expansion of pixel arrays in digital microfluidics (DMF) chips, precise droplet control has emerged as a critical issue requiring detailed consideration. This paper proposes a novel capacitance-based droplet sensing system for thin-film transistor DMF. The proposed circuit features a distinctive inner and outer dual-pixel electrode structure, integrating droplet driving and sensing functionalities. Discharge occurs exclusively at the inner electrode during droplet sensing, effectively addressing droplet perturbation in existing sensing circuits. The circuit employs a novel fan-shaped structure of thin-film transistors. Simulation results show that it can provide a 48 V pixel voltage and demonstrate a sensing voltage difference of over 10 V between deionized water and silicone oil, illustrating its proficiency in droplet driving and accurate sensing. The stability of threshold voltage drift and temperature was also verified for the circuit. The design is tailored for integration into active matrix electrowetting-on-dielectric (AM-EWOD) chips, offering a novel approach to achieve precise closed-loop control of droplets. Automated laboratory pipelines empowered by the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) have been reshaping the paradigm of chemical and material discovery. While intelligent decision‐making strategies have been developed that enable fast convergence to optimal reaction conditions, the overall efficiency is still bottlenecked by the slow acquisition of online characterization units, especially in microfluidics‐based systems. In response, an ultrafast machine vision framework is hereby developed to directly predict optical spectra from real‐time high‐speed imaging in this article. Utilizing uniquely engineered deep‐learning algorithms, this framework automatically detects droplets and recapitulates high‐quality spectra from embedded image features in a sub‐millisecond timeframe. In a proof‐of‐concept example, droplets are detected with an average precision of 99.75% within 0.51 ms, and their spectra spanning the entire visible wavelengths are predicted with an average peak error of 5.32 nm, which is equivalent to 1.6% of the visible range. The work demonstrates the first example of an all‐imaging‐based machine learning framework deployed in a real‐time environment for the full replacement of an analytical instrument. It highlights the broader possibility of AI in material researches to break the physical limitations of online diagnostics and to further boost efficiencies in self‐driving laboratories. Valveless micropump, important components of a microfluidic system, are widely used in biomedicine, chemical industry, microelectronics cooling and other fields. At present, the driving mode of micropump is mainly single drive, resulting in insufficient driving force and low output pressure. In this study, the overall structure of valveless micropump is designed, and the driving component and the internal inlet and outlet are compared and analyzed by finite element simulation. Moreover, the valveless micropump prototype is processed and developed for performance test. Results show that the output performance of the valveless micropump driven by piezoelectric and heating coupling is better than that of the piezoelectric micropump. When the ambient temperature was 20 °C, 140 V voltage and 40 Hz frequency were added to the piezoelectric component, as well as a 3A current to the heating plate. This paper describes a method for fabricating microfluidic electronics with 3D interconnected networks by direct ink writing (DIW)‐based 3D printing. Existing 3D printing technologies have yet to simultaneously realize 1) direct printing of interconnected multilayered microchannels without supporting materials or post‐processing and 2) integration of electronic elements with microchannels during the process of printing. This research aims to develop a method to fabricate support‐free microchannels consisting of silicone sealant without the collapse of the extruded structure while integrating electronic elements during the fabrication by DIW. The injection of liquid metal into 3D‐printed microchannels allows the formation of electrical connections between 3D conductive networks and the embedded electronic elements, enabling the fabrication of flexible and stretchable liquid metal antenna coils. To demonstrate a practical application, 1) a skin‐attachable radio‐frequency identification (RFID) tag using a commercial skin‐adhesive plaster as a substrate and 2) free‐standing flexible wireless light‐emitting devices with a small footprint (21.4 mm × 15 mm) for potential implantable applications are produced. This technology will offer a new capability to realize the automated fabrication of stretchable printed circuits with 3D configuration of electrical circuits consisting of liquid metals. As the main prerequisite for flow in microfluidic chips, micropumps have always been the core component of microfluidic systems. With the continuous development trend of the three dimensions and high integration for microfluidic systems in recent years, combining the characteristics of micro and drivable fluid flowing in 3D space is the current mainstream research goal in the functions of the micropumps. Here, based on the continuous electrowetting effect in a confined space of the Ga‐based liquid metal (LM), an LM driving micropump structure is proposed that enables fluid to be pumped up to 200 mm in height, which meets the major demands of microfluidic system working environments. The pumping mechanism is experimentally analyzed and demonstrated, as well as the working performance of the micropump under different output modes (continuous flow and pulsatile flow). The feasibility of this micropump is also verified through a fluid pumping experiment in complex shaped channels and a temperature management experiment in 3D space. This work is envisaged to expand the function and application area of the electric actuators driven by the Ga‐based LM and provide new support for micropumps in the 3D microfluidic chip system. Separation of equally sized particles distinguished solely by material properties remains still a very challenging task. Here a simple separation of differently charged, thermo‐responsive polymeric particles (for example microgels) but equal in size, via the combination of pressure‐driven microfluidic flow and precise temperature control is proposed. The separation principle relies on forcing thermo‐responsive microgels to undergo the volume phase transition during heating and therefore changing its size and correspondingly the change in drift along a pressure driven shear flow. Different thermo‐responsive particle types such as different grades of ionizable groups inside the polymer matrix have different temperature regions of volume phase transition temperature (VPTT). This enables selective control of collapsed versus swollen microgels, and accordingly, this physical principle provides a simple method for fractioning a binary mixture with at least one thermo‐responsive particle, which is achieved by elution times in the sense of particle chromatography. The concepts are visualized in experimental studies, with an intend to improve the purification strategy of the broad distribution of charged microgels into fractioning to more narrow distribution microgels distinguished solely by slight differences in net charge. Traditional circuit board fabrication schemes are not directly applicable to the production of flexible, multi‐material circuits. This article reports a technique, microfluidic directed material patterning, which combines soft microfluidic stamps and low‐temperature solution‐phase deposition to generate multi‐material circuits on flexible, non‐planar polymeric supports. Specifically, metallic and semiconductive traces are combined on commodity plastic films to yield functional photosensitive circuits that can be used in the spectrophotometric detection and concentration measurement of microdroplets on 3D “e‐plates.” The photoresistive material cadmium sulfide is used in these circuits because it is suitable for visible light detection and it can be deposited directly from aqueous solutions following established bath deposition procedures. This method can produce colorimetric devices capable of quantifying micromolar concentrations of Allura Red in microdroplets of Kool‐Aid. This technique presents the opportunity for producing single‐use or low‐use disposable/recyclable devices for flexible 3D sensors and detectors following a convenient, low‐waste fabrication scheme. The general capabilities of this approach, in terms of substrate geometry and device layout (e.g., the number, area, and pattern of photoresistive elements), can be applied to the design and manufacture of more intricate, multiplexed devices supportive of advanced and/or specialized functions that go beyond those reported in this initial demonstration. Tropical diseases present significant challenges to global health, particularly in resource-limited regions. Early and accurate detection of these diseases is vital for effective management and control. In recent years, metallic-based LSPR sensors have emerged as promising diagnostic tools for sensitive and rapid detection of tropical diseases. This comprehensive review aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the current state of research on metallic-based LSPR sensors for the detection of various tropical diseases. In this study, we focused on the connection between neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and its risk using metallic-based LSPR sensors to identify potential inflammatory biomarkers. We conducted a literature search using PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Only published materials written in English were considered, resulting in the identification of ∼ 220 articles. After a comprehensive evaluation, we selected 35 relevant ones. Our analysis revealed 35 links to neglected tropical diseases, providing valuable insights into their relationship using metallic-based LSPR sensors. Moreover, we explore the potential of metallic-based LSPR sensors in point-of-care testing and their integration with emerging technologies such as microfluidics and smartphone-based diagnostics. This review underscores the need for continued research efforts to develop affordable, sensitive, and user-friendly metallic-based LSPR sensors for early detection and surveillance of tropical diseases. Adsorbents with high adsorption efficiency and excellent biosafety for biomedical applications are highly required. MXene is a promising candidate owning these advantages, yet pristine MXene faces dilemmas including insufficient utility of surface site as well as limited processibility. Here, we develop MXene‐encapsulated porous microcapsules via microfluidics. The microcapsules have a biomass hydrogel shell that provides robust support for MXene in the core, by which the microcapsules are endowed with high MXene dosage and remarkable biosafety. Additionally, the MXene nanoflakes assemble into a three‐dimensional network via metal ion‐induced gelation, thereby avoiding restacking and significantly improving surface utilization. Moreover, a freeze‐pretreatment of the microcapsules during preparation results in the formation of a macroporous structure in the shell, which can facilitate the diffusion of the target molecules. These features, combined with additional magneto‐responsiveness rendered by the incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles, contribute to prominent performances of the microcapsules in cleaning uremia toxins including creatinine, urea, and uric acid. Thus, it is anticipated that the MXene‐encapsulated microcapsules will be promising adsorbents in dialysis‐related applications, and the combination of microfluidic encapsulation with metal ion gelation will provide a novel approach for construction of hybrid MXene materials with desired functions. Osteoarthritis has been regarded as a complex and serious degenerative disease. Attempts in this area are focused on improving the curative effect of stem cell‐based therapies. In this work, we present a novel inverse opal microcarriers‐based cytokines delivery system to induce autologous stem cell homing for osteoarthritis treatment. Considering their important role in stem cell recruitment and chondrogenic differentiation respectively, platelet‐derived growth factor BB (PDGF‐BB) and transforming growth factor β3 (TGF‐β3) are loaded into inverse opal microcarriers as model cytokines. Since cytokine release induces the corresponding variations in characteristic reflection spectra and structural colors, the inverse opal microcarriers possess the optical self‐reporting capacity to monitor the release process. In vitro cell experiments reveal that inverse opal microcarriers could successfully recruit the gathering of mesenchymal stem cells through the release of loaded cytokines. Based on these features, we have demonstrated the enhanced therapeutic effect of PDGF‐BB and TGF‐β3 loaded inverse opal microcarriers in the treatment of rat osteoarthritis models. These results indicate that the multifunctional inverse opal microcarriers‐based cytokines delivery system would find broad prospects in osteoarthritis treatment and other biomedical fields. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have certain effect in cancer treatment, thus many studies have been focused on developing functional systems to generate ROS in tumor. Here, inspired by the multi‐enzyme biocatalysis in organisms, novel ultrasound‐triggered temporospatial catalytic cascades systems are presented based on barium titanate (BTO) and platinum (Pt) co‐loaded multi‐component microparticles (Pt/BTO@MCMPs) to successively achieve oxygen and ROS production for tumor sonodynamic therapy. By using a customized capillary microfluidic device, the Pt/BTO@MCMPs are fabricated with Pt nanoparticles located in their core part and BTO nanocubes located in their peripheral part, alternating with blank porous hydrogel components for increasing interaction areas between the encapsulated nanomaterials and the ambient substrates. In the microparticles, the Pt can catalyze hydrogen peroxide from the tumor microenvironment to generate O2 and H2O serving as substrates for piezoelectric catalytic reactions, contributing to additional generation of ROS under US activation. Based on the system, it is demonstrated that the Pt/BTO@MCMPs are featured with excellent biocompatibility under normal biological conditions and show desired tumor eradication properties under ultrasound irradiation in mice carrying pancreatic tumors. Microfluidic devices have been widely used to measure the diffusion coefficients and hydrodynamic radii of various molecules, especially proteins. The existing devices that use diffusion-based gradient generation apply obstacles such as membranes or hydrogels to avoid additional fluid flow affecting the evolution of concentration distribution and precise measurement. Here, a free-diffusion based microfluidic device was developed which is capable of measuring the diffusion coefficients of various, different-sized proteins and dyes without using any obstacles by minimizing pressure differences due to its symmetrical geometry. The fluorescent detection and the ease of application of the device enable accelerated measurements and interpretation of results. Time-lapse pictures of 30 s were taken of the diffusion profiles and a custom-made self-written Python program was used to fit the profiles to the theoretical functions and calculate the diffusion coefficients. Microfluidics is an area that allows the design and construction of microchips. The most common fabrication of these chips is expensive and difficult to access, requiring a specialized laboratory, with instruments that need to be monitored by experienced technicians and high-cost materials, then new techniques are sought to facilitate their production. Here, we present a fabrication methodology that combines the 3D printer resolution, and the polydimethylsiloxane flexibility to create hydrophobic and biocompatible microfluidics chips which are connected to a microfluidic control system. Transparent, and leak-free polydimethylsiloxane microchips were achieved with a width and a height of 250 µm. This strategy allows to produce at least, 20 chips using the same resin mold. The pressure at which the chip can work is from 2.4 kPa to 124 kPa. This work provides a low-cost alternative for academic and research groups to create their own microfluidic systems and use the microfluidic advantages in all types of applications including biosensor building, studies in medicine, biology, nanoscience, environmental technology, chemistry, etc., since it allows a controlled manipulation of one or more fluids in a certain area where a sensor can be placed, generate a reaction, among others. Alginate-based microcapsules are promising carriers for drugs and biomedical agents due to their biodegradability, biocompatible character, and easy availability. Through microfluidic technology, we've achieved highly uniform alginate microencapsulation, exhibiting remarkable monodispersity. Despite alginate's favorable attributes, such as biocompatibility, its limited stability and mechanical properties pose challenges for drug delivery applications. Our research addresses this limitation by introducing a cross-linked alginate/kappa-carrageenan (Alg/κ-Car) co-polymer, enabling the fabrication of microgels through microfluidic devices. Our study demonstrates significant enhancements in Alg microgel properties with the incorporation of κ-Car. Comparative analyses of Alg/κ-Car and Alg microgels revealed substantial improvements in morphology, gel network, and stability attributed to the κ-Car addition. Notably, loading BSA as a model protein showcased enhanced drug carrier capabilities of the microgel when κ-Car was present. The release half-life of BSA within 1.5 wt.% Alg microgel was approximately 1.5 h, which extended to about 3 h when substituting 0.5 wt.% of Alg with κ-Car. Effective manipulation and control of fluids in microfluidic channels requires robust bonding between the different components. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is widely employed in microchannel fabrication due to its affordability, biocompatibility, and straightforward fabrication process. However, PDMS's low surface energy poses challenges in bonding with many organic and inorganic substrates, hindering the development of hybrid microfluidic devices. In this study, a simple and versatile three step process is presented for bonding PDMS microchannels with organic (cyclic olefin copolymer (COC)) and inorganic substrates (lithium niobate (LiNbO3)) using plasma activation and a silane coupling agent. Initially, the PDMS surface undergoes oxygen/argon plasma activation, followed by functionalization with (3‐aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES). Subsequently, the COC or LiNbO3 is plasma activated and brought into contact with PDMS under a load at a specific temperature. Characterization by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and contact angle measurements confirmed the successful treatment of the substrates. In addition, bonding strength of the fabricated hybrid devices was assessed through leakage and tensile tests. Under optimized conditions (100°C and 4% v/v APTES), PDMS‐COC hybrid microchannels achieved a flow rate of 600 mL/h without leakage and a tensile strength of 562 kPa. Conversely, the PDMS‐ LiNbO3 assembly demonstrated a flow rate of 216 mL/h before leakage, with a tensile strength of 334 kPa. This bonding method exhibits significant potential and versatility for various materials in microfluidic applications, ranging from biomedical research to enhanced oil recovery. The vascular system maintains cellular homeostasis by transporting oxygen, nutrients, and metabolic waste products. The vascular system is involved in a variety of fundamental physiological phenomena and is closely associated with human vascular diseases. Additionally, the stability of drugs in the vasculature affects their efficacy. Therefore, researchers have used vascular models to study vascular diseases, assess drug stability, and screen drugs. However, there are many shortcomings in the animal models and in vitro two-dimensional vascular models that have been extensively developed. In this paper, we specifically review the construction methods of in vitro vascular models and classify the specific methods into photolithography, soft lithography, self-assembly, template, 3D bioprinting, and laser degradation/cavitation. The first two are microfluidics-based methods and the last three are non-microfluidics-based methods. The vascular model construction methods reviewed in this paper overcome the shortcomings of traditional models—which cannot accurately reproduce the human vascular microenvironment—and can assist in the construction of in vitro 3D vascular models and tissue engineering vascularization. These models can be reused by perfusion devices, and the cells within the channels reside on biocompatible materials that are used to simulate the microenvironment and 3D cellular organization of the vasculature in vivo. In addition, these models are reproducible in shape and length, allowing experiments to be repeated, which is difficult to do with natural vessels. An optimal portable microfluidic device should ensure least number of accessories for versatile field application. Typically, in such a device fabricated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the transport of fluid is enabled through a nonconventional pumping mechanism. This pumping system has been demonstrated to utilize the relatively high air permeability of polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) to transport small volume fluid. In the recent past, microporous PDMS has replaced PDMS in this capacity. Microporous PDMS is typically fabricated through a series of steps where a sacrificial template is used to infiltrate the polymer. This template is removed after the polymer undergoes curing. This method has consistently produced a spongy structure that is nonrigid, sticky, and moist rendering it unwieldy. In this work, we present a novel concept of using camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) as a template to fabricate a dry polymeric sponge. The proposed sponge is molded on a sublimable material, camphor to avoid the additional step of template dissolution. The sponge is demonstrated to be stiff yet flexible rendering it convenient to be compacted into a confined space. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) transplantation is a promising strategy for osteoporosis treatment. However, limited sources and poor tissue-homing efficiency limit their clinical capabilities. In this study, we isolated a kind of MSCs from women's menstrual blood (MenSCs) noninvasively and established a novel MSCs bone marrow-targeted delivery system by utilizing water-in-oil-in-water droplet microfluidics. MenSCs were encapsulated within β-cyclodextrin-functionalized alginate microcapsules loaded with zoledronates, which has a high affinity for bone. With this delivery system, MenSCs could be preferentially delivered to the bone marrow tissues via intravenous infusion, and restored bone mass by remodeling the bone marrow niche in situ in ovariectomized mouse models. Moreover, scRNA-seq analysis demonstrated that those MenSCs homed to the bone marrow recruited CD4+FOXP3+ natural regulatory T (nTreg) cells by secreting CCL28. The recruited nTreg promoted CD8+ T cells to secret Wnt family member 10B (WNT10B), activating the Wnt signaling in osteoblasts and thus promoting bone formation in situ in the bone marrow. This study reveals a promising application of MenSCs in postmenopausal osteoporosis treatment and highlights the clinical value of MenSCs by encouraging women to reserve autologous MenSCs before menopause to prevent and alleviate postmenopausal osteoporosis. Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are promising candidates for use as biomicrorobots in biomedical applications due to their motility, self-propulsion, and the ability to direct their navigation with an applied magnetic field. When in the body, the MTB may encounter non-Newtonian fluids such as blood plasma or mucus. However, their motility and the effectiveness of directed navigation in non-Newtonian fluids has yet to be studied on a single-cell level. In this work, we investigate motility of Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1 in three concentrations of polyacrylamide (PAM) solution, a mucus-mimicking fluid. The swimming speeds increase from 44.0 ± 13.6 µm/s in 0 mg/mL of PAM to 52.73 ± 15.6 µm/s in 1 mg/mL then decreases to 24.51 ± 11.7 µm/s in 2 mg/mL and 21.23 ± 10.5 µm/s in 3 mg/mL. This trend of a speed increase in low polymer concentrations followed by a decrease in speed as the concentration increases past a threshold concentration is consistent with other studies of motile, flagellated bacteria. Past this threshold concentration of PAM, there is a higher percentage of cells with an overall trajectory angle deviating from the angle of the magnetic field lines. There is also less linearity in the trajectories and an increase in reversals of swimming direction. Altogether, we show that MTB can be directed in polymer concentrations mimicking biological mucus, demonstrating the influence of the medium viscosity on the linearity of their trajectories which alters the effective path that could be predefined in Newtonian fluids when transport is achieved by magnetotaxis. Multiphase microfluidic has emerged as a powerful platform to produce novel materials with tailor-designed functionalities, as microfluidic fabrication provides precise controls over the size, component, and structure of resultant materials. Recently, functional materials with welldefined micro-/nanostructures fabricated by microfluidics find important applications as environmental and energy materials. This review first illustrated in detail how different structures or shapes of droplet and jet templates are formed by typical configurations of microfluidic channel networks and multiphase flow systems. Subsequently, recent progresses on several representative energy and environmental applications, such as water purification, water collecting and energy storage, were overviewed. Finally, it is envisioned that integrating microfluidics and other novel materials will play increasing important role in contributing environmental remediation and energy storage in near future.
