This essay represents the first scholarly assessment of the complete works of the Elizabethan poet and translator Richard Linche (fl. 1596-1601). Linche was interested in classical mythology, sonnet writing, and prose translation. He was also concerned with the burning literary questions of the 1590s and early seventeenth century. This article analyzes Linche's sonnet sequence Diella (1596) and his love poem The Love of Dom Diego and Gynevra (1596), highlighting Linche's use of ancient mythology as an ideal vehicle for exploring personal passion in contemporary poetry. It then turns to Linche's English translation of the Italian mythographer Vincenzo Cartari, The Fountaine of Ancient Fiction (1599), to illustrate how Linche deals with mythology as an inspiration for literature. Linche identifies myth as an appealing source for contemporary writing while displaying discomfort with some of its sexual content. Finally, this article discusses Linche's An Historical Treatise of the Travels of Noah into Europe (1601), placing the work in the larger picture of his literary career and suggesting that it was a euhemeristic response to his earlier explorations of myth. In contrast to Linche's earlier works, The Travels offers a depersonalized and desexualized approach to myth. This study posits that the postmodern practice of uniting dress and mythology has its roots in the Creation Stories of the Judeo/Christian Bible, perhaps the greatest myth ever told. Here the practice of dress finds its genesis in Genesis at the same time as the civilization project. In 1830 an American trader, Benjamin Morrell, abducted Dako, the son of a prominent leader from Uneapa Island in the Bismarck Sea, took him to New York and, four years later, returned him to Uneapa. Dako's encounter with America and his return provides insight into the region half a century before colonization, and in particular into local mytho-practical knowledge at that time. This enables us to discern subsequent transformations. Myths concerning an origin spirit and guardian of the dead. Pango, which then dominated Uneapa cosmology have since 'disappeared'. This, we argue, is not because Pango has been superseded or suppressed, but because the parallel 'white ' world over which the mytho-practical Pango presided has become ever more manifest as Uneapa has been drawn into a colonial, post-colonial and globalised world. Today, Pango refers predominantly to white people. Islander's experience of American 'Pango' was a shocking event at the time, but we show how trading with Pango established transformatory possibilities for reciprocal trading relations with the dead which remain the concern of today's Cult movement on the island. Women are incredible in our Indian mythology. Throughout the history of Indian civilization; Women have battled to assert themselves as self-reliant individuals, and to vindicate their identities in a patriarchal society. Again and again, these warriors have manifested their prominence in various myths; which are narrated and passed down by various generations in the form of folk traditions. The two great epics The Ramayana (500 BCE) and The Mahabharata (400 BCE) are radiant with many heroic female characters' distinguishing themselves through various skills. The Mahabharata is the story of courageous men and eminent women whose lives are trulymotivational. Women in the Mahabharata performed their various roles and responsibilities with their endurance, optimism, nobility, intellect, and faithfulness. Their assertiveness and self-confidence made them rebellious and tough enough to deal with the Patriarchy and Gender-discrimination.Draupadi, Gandhari, and Kunti are the leading ladies of Mahabharata, but there have been some lesser known female warriors who were skilled in warfares, but not attained recognition in the epic. These women performed an important role in shaping the narrative of the epic and their contributions cannot be overlooked. Nationalist visions are often connected with a cult of the land. This article considers some of the cultural-nationalist ideas linked to the Somerset town of Glastonbury, a prominent New Age centre. It discusses the legacy of British pastoralism as shown in the work of H. V. Morton and Cecil Sharp. It considers the evolution of an English-Celtic tradition, drawing on the legacy of the Arthurian legend, but being re-formulated in the late twentieth century as a vehicle for New Age conceptions of British society. In this introductory article we identify eight myths of conflict and development related to the Middle East region. Some of these myths, which cut across academia, foreign policy and development interventions, are specific to the Middle East; others are 'global' myths that regional developments contradict. We do not claim to be the first to identify all these myths; many of our arguments are indebted to a long history of critical scholarship. Four inscribed lead curse tablets excavated from the Heroön of Opheltes at Nemea are edited and presented here with commentary. The texts of the tablets are erotic in nature, but closer analysis reveals a fundamental ambiguity in the rhetorical force of the anatomical lists and the operative verb apostrephō (ἀποστρέφω) in the curses. The choice of a hero shrine as the place of their deposition is unusual; a deciding factor for this location may have been the presence of the grave of Opheltes, who was believed to have died very young (aōros; ἄωρος) and through violence (biaiothanatos; βιαιοθάνατος), both of which being desirable qualities in the practice of ancient magic. The persistence of gendered learning myths in educational contexts and the wider imaginary continues to trouble feminist educational researchers and practitioners. The tracing of such myths and the categories they create through authoritative and elite discourses of the past suggests how they have functioned across different fields to preserve a hierarchised binary. Gendered myths seem to be lent authority by some of the more popular claims of contemporary neuroscience as they were by the nascent Victorian psychological sciences. London: Routledge] heuristic of identifying which attributes are absorbed into masculine intellectual legacies and which ‘cast off’ to women allows for a focus on patterns of privileging of learning discourses across the humanities and sciences, and the ways these are constituted in historical and contemporary contexts. This essay investigates different kinds of storytelling found in Afro-Cuban religions. The term "interorality" describes how narrators and audiences interact, collaborate, and help construct the meaning of narratives. The piece uses fieldwork and ethnographic writing to illustrate how Afro-Cuban religious storytelling allows for the fluid interpretation of gender, race, and sexuality by different members of the religious community. This article continues the history of the Classical Association of South Africa as recorded in the archives of the Association. Since the publication of the previous accounts, an important study has appeared, which reconstructs some of the political, social and cultural contexts in which the activities of the Association, as reflected in my archival reports, were imbedded. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, many Western tourists have become interested in visiting Transylvania, a region in the central part of Romania, in Eastern Europe, in order to discover the stories and legends about Count Dracula, a mysterious and ruthless vampire, who, some believe, might have inhabited various solitary places in the heart of Transylvania. Some of these tourists may know that the Dracula vampire story originated in a novel written by Bram Stoker, who placed the vampire in Transylvania, a faraway mythic space, and the legends woven around this fictional character have created an intriguing link between the vampire figure and a real-life, fifteenth-century Romanian ruler, Vlad Ţepeş/Dracula. As a result of Western media representations of the Dracula myth, in time, Romania has acquired (and developed) a connection with the vampire myth. Therefore, this paper sets out to examine the impact of the Dracula myth on the postcommunist society, by exploring the historical and cultural dimensions of the "Dracula connection," reflected in the dichotomy between the Romanian general perception about Vlad Dracula as a medieval ruler and "the other" Romanian version of the Dracula vampire persona loosely based on Vlad Dracula (a version constructed for a Western "audience" for commercial and touristic purposes). This article attempts a full appreciation of interdependence in Sartre's thinking about practical freedom. The result is an account that opens Sartre's thinking on practical freedom to more than just the empowerment of individuals and groups. Ultimately, this means privileging, perhaps paradoxically, a vision of practical freedom that is greater by being more limited. The trajectory for this attempt is Sartre's 1971 diagnosis of America as 'full of myths,' which provokes a critical examination of a vision of freedom in independence. The attempt is then fleshed out through encounters with notions that linger at the fringes of Sartre's thought, namely, happiness, progress, equality and the possibility of everything. A conceptual model highlighting the competitive, historical, and ideological influences on commercial mythmaking and their effects on popular memory is presented.

Since the end of the Indonesian occupation of Timor-Leste in 1999, a significant revival of local cultures and identities in public life has been occurring. In this article I discuss aspects of identity and culture among Fataluku-speaking people in relation to the recent establishment of the Nino Conis Santana National Park over much of their homeland. Today Fataluku cultural and historical stories provide a basis for their status as an autonomous and sovereign cultural group, as well as a legacy of intercultural negotiation and alliance that arguably reflects regional patterns of migration and social change over thousands of years. With the park's 15,000 residents continuing to rely on its forests and reefs for subsistence, recent restrictions on hunting have highlighted the need for increased local community support if the park is to achieve its conservation aims. I argue that long-standing traditions surrounding the negotiation of social and political change within Fataluku society provide a potential basis for cooperation with the new nation–state and for developing community-oriented park management policies. The myth of Antaios and Herakies emerged from the encounter between the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean. This article explores two parallel courses of the myth's progressive development. One is geographical, with the myth travelling from east to west (from Kyrenaika, through Tunisia, to Tangier). The other unfolds within the plot itself: at first Herakies stands for the Greeks (and later the Romans), while Antaios embodies the indigenous Libyans. However, shifting political circumstances also allow for the (conjectural) identification of Greeks with the figure of Antaios, and a (certain) equation of Libyans with Herakies. On the whole, the history of the myth from the seventh to the first centuries BCE reflects the development of a politically and culturally coherent Mediterranean over the same period, from the first Greek settlers in Libya to the Mediterranean empire of Augustus. In late 1960s a powerful myth developed in the United States that Vietnam veterans were spat on when they returned home. A parallel myth survives in Australia with widespread claims that paint or even blood was routinely thrown at returning soldiers. In a 1966 incident, red paint was thrown on Lieutenant Colonel Alex V. Preece as he led the First Battalion through Sydney. The Australian myth remains central to perceptions of Australian Vietnam veterans as despised outsiders and feeds into contemporary demands that Australians support their soldiers and the wars in which they are involved. Time and space, manifested in such well known phrases and expressions as in illo tempore, ab origine, repetition and regeneration, center, omphalos, as well as the abolition of the profane, belong to the most important yet immensely complex concepts within Mircea Eliade's work. Based on Eliade's central publications of The Sacred and the Profane and The Myth of the Eternal Return, this article attempts to trace Eliade's notions of the terms and their relation to human thought and practice. Furthermore, the article discusses crucial critiques and elaborations of the concepts, implications and methods of Eliade's research, in order to develop an approach to the social constitution of sacred space which also considers current research in the Social Sciences on the production of space. Although current discussions of linguistic relativity tend to concentrate on obligatory grammatical categories, the original architects of this school of thought, including Boas, Sapir, and Whorf, all argued strongly for the role of vocabulary in guiding human perception, especially in the culturally charged situations of everyday life. Taking the Hupa, Yurok, and Karuk languages of northwestern California as a case study, this article demonstrates the importance of vocabulary in conveying pervasive cultural ideologies, such as those associated with mythology, religion, folklore, or geographical systems of spatial orientation.

Examination of alien abduction discourse has the potential to inform our understanding of symbolic practices. This essay uses 130 narratives of individuals who claim to have had contact with extraterrestrial beings to argue that alien abduction discourse is a living myth. This myth--the Myth of Communion--is rhetorically significant because it illustrates the formative power of narrative while also revealing certain characteristics about our cultural condition. In this paper I seek to challenge the dominant modes of conceiving the relationship between memory and national identity, and in so doing offer analysts of nationalism an improved understanding of the dynamics of national identity formation. The concept of collective memory is invoked regularly in attempts to explain the pervasiveness and power of nationalism. I argue that the concept is misused routinely in this context, and instead I employ a `social agency' approach to theorizing, whereby memory is conceived in a more limited and cogent manner. I argue that it is important to distinguish clearly between memory and mythology, both of which are essential to understanding national identity, for not only are the two concepts distinct, they can also act in opposition to each other. Following from this I introduce the notion of a `mythscape', the temporally and spatially extended discursive realm in which the myths of the nation are forged, transmitted, negotiated, and reconstructed constantly. Through employing the idea of a mythscape we can relate memory and mythology to each other in a theoretically profitable way. Mythology served a much greater sociological role than just the telling of story and legend. Leadership principles developed inadvertently through narrative story and the invention of the mythological tale. Story was an original methodology by which we could teach others about the essential traits and qualities leaders needed for effective leadership. Myths and legends also warned listeners to avoid the dark side of leadership. The principles of leadership were originally embedded in our sociobiological evolution through social learning theory. Thus humanity was learning about leadership at an unconscious level and transferring that knowledge through new and similar story over time. This article uses critical discourse analysis to show how shifting articulation of habitus and agents correlates to confrontational coding orientations in Turkish newspaper articles that have opposite ideological orientations. The authors label the voices logos and mythos, and explores the boundaries between them, focusing on how they are created, maintained and reproduced; the pragamtic, semantic, and sociocultural levels are studied, taking rationality as a reference point.

The article focuses on the methodology used in the study and teaching of critical theory relating to myths from a social and cultural context in literature. The author emphasizes the importance of guiding both novice and advanced students through every detail in the understanding of recurring myths in literary works. The author asserts that the myth is the matrix model for all narrations, and that it is easier to discern the elements of myths in longer literary works. The author discusses the six levels at which myths can be analyzed in a literary work, including the title, the size of the work and the level at which the research verges on a space and time that borders on the immemorial.
