Recent experiments on nanoclusters of silver (Ag) embedded in a gold (Au) matrix reveal a huge increase in both the zero temperature resistivity and the coefficient of the ``$T$ linear'' thermal resistivity with increasing volume fraction of Ag. A fraction $f \sim 50\%$ of Ag leads to a factor of $20$ increase in the residual resistivity, and a $40$ fold enhancement in the coefficient of linear $T$ resistivity, with respect to Au. Since Au and Ag both have weak electron-phonon coupling we surmise that the huge enhancements arise from a moderately large electron-phonon coupling that may emerge at the Ag-Au interface. We construct nanocluster configurations for varying $f$ in two dimensions, define a Holstein model on it with weak coupling on the `interior' sites and a strong coupling on the interfacial sites, and solve the model through exact diagonalisation based Langevin dynamics. Computing the resistivity, we observe a large $T=0$ increase with $f$ and also a linear $T$ enhancement factor of $\sim 30$. While the enhancement factors are parameter choice dependent, our key qualitative result is that the interface physics is inhomogeneous, with widely varying distortions, and different segments of the interface dictate the residual resistivity and the thermal scattering., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, and Supplementary

For several decades the low carrier density local moment magnet EuB$_6$ has been considered a candidate material for ferromagnetic polarons. There is however no consistent explanation for the host of intriguing observations that have accrued over the years, including a prominently non-monotonic resistivity near $T_c$, and observation of spatial textures, with a characteristic spatial and energy scale, via scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We resolve all these features using a Heisenberg-Kondo lattice model for EuB$_6$, solved using exact diagonalisation based Langevin dynamics. Over a temperature window $\sim 0.7T_c - 1.5T_c$ we observe electronic and magnetic textures with the correct spatial and energy scale, and confirm an associated non-monotonic resistivity. We predict a distinctly `non Drude' optical conductivity in the polaronic phase, and propose a field-temperature phase diagram testable through spin resolved tunneling spectroscopy. We argue that the anomalous properties of EuB$_6$, and magnetic polaron materials in general, occur due to a non monotonic change in spatial character of `near Fermi level' eigenstates with temperature, and the appearance of a weak pseudogap near $T_c$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Pump-probe response of the spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ reveals a rapid creation of low energy optical weight and suppression of three dimensional magnetic order on laser pumping. Post pump there is a quick reduction of the optical weight but a very slow recovery of the magnetic order - the difference is attributed to weak inter-layer exchange in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ delaying the recovery of three dimensional magnetic order. We demonstrate that the effect has a very different and more fundamental origin. Combining spatio-temporal mean field dynamics and Langevin dynamics on the photoexcited Mott-Hubbard insulator we show that the timescale difference is not a dimensional effect but is intrinsic to charge dynamics versus order reconstruction in a correlated system. In two dimensions itself we obtain a short, almost pump fluence independent, timescale for charge dynamics while recovery time of magnetic order involves domain growth and increases rapidly with fluence. An electron-phonon system at commensurate filling often displays charge order (CO) in the ground state. Such a system subject to a laser pulse shows a wide variety of behaviour. A weak pulse sets up low amplitude oscillations in the order parameter, with slow decay to a slightly suppressed value. A strong pulse leads to the destruction of the charge order with the order parameter showing rapid, oscillatory, decay to zero. The regime in between, separating the weak pulse CO sustained state from the strong pulse CO destroyed state, shows complex dynamics characterised by multiple, pulse strength dependent, time scales. It involves an initial rapid decay of the order parameter, followed by a low amplitude quiescent state, and the power-law rise to a steady-state over a timescale $\tau_{cr}$. We provide a complete characterisation of the dynamics in this nonequilibrium problem for varying electron-phonon coupling and pulse strength, examine the possibility of an effective "thermal" description of the long time state, and present results on the multiple insulator-metal transitions that show up., Comment: 18 pages, 22 figures

We show conclusively that a pseudogap state can arise at $T > T_c$, for reasonable pairing interaction strength, from order parameter fluctuations in a two dimensional minimal model of $d$-wave superconductivity. The occurrence of the pseudogap requires neither strong correlation nor the presence of competing order. We study a model with attractive nearest neighbor interaction and establish our result using a combination of cluster based Monte Carlo for the order parameter field and a twisted-boundary scheme to compute the momentum-resolved spectral function. Apart from a dip in the density of states that characterizes the pseudogap, the momentum and frequency resolution on our effective lattice size $\sim 160 \times 160$ allows two major conclusions: (i)~at $T < T_c$, despite the presence of thermal phase fluctuations the superconductor has only nodal Fermi points while all non nodal points on the normal state Fermi surface show a two peak spectral function with a dip at $\omega =0$, and (ii)~for $T > T_c$ the Fermi points develops into arcs, characterized by a single quasiparticle peak, and the arcs connect up to recover the normal state Fermi surface at a temperature $T^* > T_c$. We show the variation of $T_c$ and $T^*$ with coupling strength and provide detailed spectral results at a coupling where $T^* \sim 1.5T_c$., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We establish the nonequilibrium thermal phases of a voltage driven antiferromagnetic Mott insulator in three dimensions, realised at steady state under a voltage bias. Starting from the Keldysh action for the half filled Hubbard model we derive an effective Langevin equation for the `slow' magnetic variables. The coupling of electrons to these degrees of freedom determine the transport properties. At low temperature we find a voltage-driven discontinuous insulator-metal transition, along with hysteresis. We map the suppression of the N\'eel temperature $T_N$ and pseudogap temperature $T_{pg}$ with increasing voltage, and discover that the biased Mott insulator has a finite temperature insulator-metal transition. The low temperature results resolve an experimental puzzle about hysteresis, and the thermal results make testable predictions on spectra and nonlinear transport., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures. We study the equilibrium dynamics of magnetic moments in the Mott insulating phase of the Hubbard model on the square and triangular lattice. We rewrite the Hubbard interaction in terms of an auxiliary vector field and use a recently developed Langevin scheme to study its dynamics. A thermal `noise', derivable approximately from the Keldysh formalism, allows us to study the effect of finite temperature. At strong coupling, $U \gg t$, where $U$ is the local repulsion and $t$ the nearest neighbour hopping, our results reproduce the well known dynamics of the nearest neighbour Heisenberg model with exchange $J \sim {\cal O}(t^2/U)$. These include crossover from weakly damped dispersive modes at temperature $T \ll J$ to strong damping at $T \sim {\cal O}(J)$, and diffusive dynamics at $T \gg J$. The crossover temperatures are naturally proportional to $J$. To highlight the progressive deviation from Heisenberg physics as $U/t$ reduces we compute an effective exchange scale $J_{eff}(U)$ from the low temperature spin wave velocity. We discover two features in the dynamical behaviour with decreasing $U/t$: (i)~the low temperature dispersion deviates from the Heisenberg result, as expected, due to longer range and multispin interactions, and (ii)~the crossovers between weak damping, strong damping, and diffusion take place at noticeably lower values of $T/J_{eff}$. We relate this to enhanced mode coupling, in particular to thermal amplitude fluctuations, at weaker $U/t$. We solve for the finite temperature collective mode dynamics in the Holstein-double exchange problem, using coupled Langevin equations for the phonon and spin variables. We present results in a strongly anharmonic regime, close to a polaronic instability. For our parameter choice the system transits from an `undistorted' ferromagnetic metal at low temperature to a structurally distorted paramagnetic insulator at high temperature, through a short range charge ordered (CO) phase near the ferromagnetic crossover at $T_{FM}$. The small amplitude harmonic phonons at low temperature cross over to large amplitude dynamics around $0.5 T_{FM}$ due to thermally generated short range correlated polarons. The rare thermal ``tunneling'' of CO domains generates a hitherto unknown momentum selective spectral weight at very low energy. We use a Langevin approach to treat the finite temperature dynamics of displacement variables in the half-filled spinless Holstein model. Working in the adiabatic regime we exploit the smallness of the adiabatic parameter to simplify the memory effects and estimate displacement costs from an "instantaneous" electronic Hamiltonian. We use a phenomenological damping rate, and uncorrelated thermal noise. The low temperature state has checkerboard charge order (CO) and the Langevin scheme generates equilibrium thermodynamic properties that accurately match Monte Carlo results. It additionally yields the dynamical structure factor, $D({\bf q}, \omega)$, from the displacement field $x({\bf r}, t)$. We observe four regimes with increasing temperature, $T$, classified in relation to the charge ordering temperature, $T_c$, and the `polaron formation' temperature $T_P$, with $ T_c \ll T_P$. For $T \ll T_c$ the oscillations are harmonic, leading to dispersive phonons, with increasing $T$ bringing in anharmonic, momentum dependent, corrections. For $T \sim T_c$, thermal tunneling events of the $x({\bf r})$ field occur, with a propagating `domain' pattern at wavevector ${\bf q} \sim (\pi, \pi)$ and low energy weight in $D({\bf q}, \omega)$. When $T_c < T < T_P$, the disordered polaron regime, domain structures vanish, the dispersion narrows, and low energy weight is lost. For $T \gtrsim T_P$ we essentially have uncorrelated local oscillations. We propose simple models to analyse this rich dynamics., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures

We investigate the thermal physics of a Bose-Hubbard model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling starting from a strong coupling mean-field ground state. The essential role of the spin-orbit coupling $\left(\gamma\right)$ is to promote condensation of the bosons at a finite wavevector ${k}_{0}$. We find that the bosons display either homogeneous or phase-twisted or orbital ordered superfluid phases, depending on $\gamma$ and the inter-species interaction strength $\lambda$. We show that an increase of $\gamma$ leads to suppression of the critical interaction $U_c$ for the superfluid to Mott insulator transition in the ground state, and a reduction of the $T_c$ for superfluid to Bose-liquid transition at a fixed interaction. We capture the thermal broadening in the momentum distribution function, and the real space profiles of the thermally disordered magnetic textures, including their homogenization for $T \gtrsim T_{c}$. We provide a Landau theory based description of the ground state phase boundaries and thermal transition scales, and discuss experiments which can test our theory., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We explore the anisotropy in low frequency conductivity as a function of hole doping in multiorbital models of pnictides by analyzing the Drude weight in the $x$ and $y$ directions of a ($\pi$, 0) spin-density wave state. A reduction in the conductivity anisotropy with increased hole doping, and subsequent sign reversal, both observed in experiments, is found to be a common trend in these models. This behavior arises due to the interplay of low energy orbitally-resolved density of states and the geometrical features of the Fermi surface. Optical lattice experiments which probe the effect of disorder on superfluidity often use a speckle pattern for generating the disorder. Such speckle disorder is spatially correlated. While fermionic superfluidity in the presence of uncorrelated disorder is well studied, the impact of correlated disorder, particularly on thermal properties of the superfluid, is poorly understood. We provide a detailed study of the impact of speckle disorder, for varying speckle size and disorder magnitude, on the ground state and thermal properties of a Fermi superfluid. We work in the strong coupling regime of BCS-BEC crossover in a two dimensional lattice. For a fixed disorder strength, an increase in speckle size leads to smoothening of the self-consistent background potential, increase in the critical disorder needed for a superfluid-insulator transition, and an increase in superfluid $T_c$ . Along with these hints at decrease in effective disorder, speckle correlations also suppress the superfluid gap and the gap formation temperature - effects normally associated with increasing disorder. An electron system with pre-existing local moments and an effective electron-electron attraction can exhibit simultaneous magnetic and superconducting order. Increasing the magnetic coupling weakens pairing and the ground state loses superconductivity at a critical coupling. In the vicinity of the critical coupling magnetic order dramatically modifies the quasiparticle dispersion in the superconductor, creating low energy spectral weight and significant gap anisotropy in the notional 's-wave' state. Using a Monte Carlo approach to the Hubbard-Kondo lattice problem we establish a thermal phase diagram, for varying magnetic coupling, that corresponds qualitatively to the borocarbide superconductors. In addition to the superconducting and magnetic transition temperatures, we identify two new thermal scales in this nominal s-wave system. These are associated, respectively, with crossover from gapped to gapless superconductivity, and from an anisotropic (nodal) 'Fermi surface' at low temperature, through a Fermi arc regime, to an isotropic Fermi surface at high temperature. We investigate the dynamical structure factor associated with lattice fluctuations in a model that approximates the manganites. It involves electrons strongly coupled to core spins, and to lattice distortions, in a weakly disordered background. This model is solved in the adiabatic limit in two dimensions via Monte Carlo, retaining all the thermal fluctuations. In the metallic phase near the polaronic crossover this approach captures the effect of thermally induced polaron formation, and their short range correlation, on the electronic spectral functions. The dynamical fluctuations of the optical and acoustic phonon modes are computed at a `one loop' level by calculating the electronic polarisability in the the thermally fluctuating backgrounds, and solving the phonon Dyson equations in real space. We present phonon lineshapes across the ferromagnet to paramagnet thermal transition and correlate them with changing electronic properties. We compare our results with inelastic neutron scattering data on the metallic manganites, and also predict what one may find in the more insulating phases., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures

Impurity scattering is found to lead to quasi-one dimensional nanoscale modulation of the local density of states in the iron pnictides and chalcogenides. This `quasiparticle interference' feature is remarkably similar across a wide variety of pnictide and chalcogenide phases, suggesting a common origin. We show that a unified understanding of the experiments can be obtained by simply invoking a four-fold symmetry breaking $d_{xz}-d_{yz}$ orbital splitting, of a magnitude already suggested by the experiments. This can explain the one-dimensional characteristics in the local density of states observed in the orthorhombic nematic, tetragonal paramagnetic, as well as the spin-density wave and superconducting states in these materials., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures (accepted in PRB Rapid Communication)

We compute the single particle spectral function of a Bose liquid on a lattice, at integer filling, close to the superfluid-Mott transition. We use a `static path approximation' that retains all the classical thermal fluctuations in the problem, and a real space implementation of the random phase approximation (RPA) for the Green's functions on the thermally fluctuating backgrounds. This leads to the standard RPA answers in the ground state but captures the progressive damping of the excitations with increasing temperature. We focus on the momentum resolved lineshape across the superfluid to Bose liquid thermal transition. In the superfluid regime we observe a gapped `amplitude' mode, and gapless `phase' modes of positive and negative energy. The dispersion and weight of these modes changes with interaction but are almost temperature independent, even into the normal state, except near critical coupling. The damping of the modes varies roughly as $T^{\alpha} f_{\bf k}$, where $T$ is the temperature and ${\bf k}$ the momentum, with $\alpha \sim 0.5$ and $f_{\bf k}$ having non trivial momentum dependence. The Mott phase has gapped dispersive spectra. Near critical coupling the thermal Bose `liquid' is gapped, with progressive widening of the gap with increasing temperature, a feature that it shares with the Mott insulator., Comment: 10 pages,11 figures

We provide a comprehensive solution to the lattice dynamics problem in the two dimensional Holstein model at finite electron density and finite temperature. We work in the physically relevant adiabatic regime and vary the electron-phonon interaction from the weak coupling perturbative window to the strong coupling polaronic regime. We explore three typical electron densities, dilute - where spatial correlations between polarons is weak, intermediate - where correlations are significant, and half-filling - where there is long range checkerboard order at low temperature. We use two methods both of which exploit the "slowness" of the phonons to handle the problem. These are (i)~a standard random phase approximation (RPA), adapted to capture small quantum fluctuations on Monte Carlo generated classical thermal backgrounds, and (ii)~a Langevin dynamics scheme, with a simplified ``thermal noise'', that can address large amplitude dynamical fluctuations. The Langevin scheme, as we argue in the paper, is the superior method in the strong coupling part of the phase diagram, where lattice distortions are large. It reveals a non trivial multi-peak momentum resolved spectrum with a high energy part, on the scale of the bare phonon frequency $\Omega$, and a low energy peak at $\omega \ll \Omega$. Below the polaronic threshold, the high energy dispersion changes only modestly with temperature $T$, while the broadening, arising from mode coupling, increases linearly with $T$ at low temperature. The low energy peak shows up at strong coupling and finite temperature and arises from the slow tunneling of polarons. The tunneling events become spatially correlated as electron density increases towards half-filling, and the weight becomes strongly momentum and temperature dependent. We present a method that generalises the standard mean field theory of correlated lattice bosons to include amplitude and phase fluctuations of the $U(1)$ field that induces onsite particle number mixing. This arises formally from an auxiliary field decomposition of the kinetic term in a Bose Hubbard model. We solve the resulting problem, initially, by using a classical approximation for the particle number mixing field and a Monte Carlo treatment of the resulting bosonic model. In two dimensions we obtain $T_c$ scales that dramatically improve on mean field theory and are within about 20% of full quantum Monte Carlo estimates. The `classical approximation' ground state, however, is still mean field, with an overestimate of the critical interaction, $U_c$, for the superfluid to Mott transition. By further including low order quantum fluctuations in the free energy functional we improve significantly on the $U_c$, and the overall thermal phase diagram. The classical approximation based method has a computational cost linear in system size. We develop a real space theory of the voltage bias driven transition from a Mott insulator to a correlated metal. Within our Keldysh mean field approach the problem reduces to a self-consistency scheme for the charge and spin profiles in this open system. We solve this problem for a two dimensional antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at zero temperature. The charge and spin magnitude is uniform over the system at zero bias, but a bias $V$ leads to spatial modulation over a lengthscale $\xi(V)$ near the edges. $\xi(V)$ grows rapidly and becomes comparable to system size as $V$ increases towards a threshold scale $V_c$. The linear response conductance of the insulator is zero with the current being exponentially small for $V \ll V_c$. The current increases rapidly as $V \rightarrow V_c$. Beyond $V_c$, we observe an inhomogeneous low moment antiferromagnetic metal, and at even larger bias a current saturated paramagnetic metal. We investigate the impurity scattering induced quasiparticle interference in the ($\pi, 0$) spin-density wave phase of the iron pnictides. We use a five orbital tight binding model and our mean field theory in the clean limit captures key features of the Fermi surface observed in angle-resolved photoemission. We use a t-matrix formalism to incorporate the effect of doping induced impurities on this state. The impurities lead to a spatial modulation of the local density of states about the impurity site, with a periodicity of $\sim 8a_{{\rm Fe}-{\rm Fe}}$ along the antiferromagnetic direction. The associated momentum space quasiparticle interference pattern is anisotropic, with major peaks located at $\sim (\pm \pi/4,0)$, consistent with spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy. We trace the origin of this pattern to an elliptical contour of constant energy around momentum (0,0), with major axis oriented along the (0,1) direction, in the mean field electronic structure.

Obtaining strong magnetoelectric couplings in bulk materials and heterostructures is an ongoing challenge. We demonstrate that manganite heterostructures of the form ${\rm (Insulator)/(LaMnO_3)_n/(CaMnO_3)_n/(Insulator)}$ show strong multiferroicity in magnetic manganites where ferroelectric polarization is realized by charges leaking from ${\rm LaMnO_3}$ to ${\rm CaMnO_3}$ due to repulsion. Here, an effective nearest-neighbor electron-electron (electron-hole) repulsion (attraction) is generated by cooperative electron-phonon interaction. Double exchange, when a particle virtually hops to its unoccupied neighboring site and back, produces magnetic polarons that polarize antiferromagnetic regions. Thus a striking giant magnetoelectric effect ensues when an external electrical field enhances the electron leakage across the interface., Comment: This version supersedes arXiv:1203.3283

The two orbital Hubbard model, with the electrons additionally coupled to a complex magnetic background, arises in the pyrochlore molybdates. The background involves local moments Hund's coupled to the electrons, driving double exchange ferromagnetism, and antiferromagnetic (AF) tendency arising from competing superexchange. The key scales include the Hubbard repulsion and the superexchange, both of which can be tuned in these materials. They control the phase transition from a ferromagnetic metal to a spin glass metal and then to a spin glass (Mott) insulator. We provide a comprehensive description of the ground state of this model using an unrestricted Hartree-Fock scheme implemented via a simulated annealing procedure and establish the metal-insulator transition line for varying Hubbard interaction and superexchange. The electrons see an effective disorder, due to orbital frustration, already in the ferromagnetic phase. The disorder is further enhanced by antiferromagnetic coupling and the resulting magnetic disorder. As a result, increasing AF coupling shifts the metal-insulator transition to lower Hubbard interaction and gives it an additional "Anderson" character. The checkerboard lattice, with alternating 'crossed' plaquettes, serves as the two dimensional analog of the pyrochlore lattice. The corner sharing plaquette structure leads to a hugely degenerate ground state, and no magnetic order, for classical spins with short range antiferromagnetic interaction. For the half-filled Hubbard model on this structure, however, we find that the Mott insulating phase involves virtual electronic processes that generate longer range and multispin couplings. These couplings lift the degeneracy, selecting a 'flux like' state in the Mott insulator. Increasing temperature leads, strangely, to a sharp crossover from this state to a '120 degree' correlated state and then a paramagnet. Decrease in the Hubbard repulsion drives the system towards an insulator-metal transition - the moments reduce, and a spin disordered state wins over the flux state. The rare-earth based pyrochlore molybdates involve orbitally degenerate electrons Hund's coupled to local moments. The large Hund's coupling promotes ferromagnetism, the superexchange between the local moments prefers antiferromagnetism, and Hubbard repulsion tries to open a Mott gap. The phase competition is tuned by the rare-earth ionic radius, decreasing which leads to change from a ferromagnetic metal to a spin disordered highly resistive ground state, and ultimately an 'Anderson-Mott' insulator. We attempt a quantitative theory of the molybdates by studying their minimal model on a pyrochlore geometry, using a static auxiliary field based Monte Carlo. We establish a thermal phase diagram that closely corresponds to the experiments, predict the hitherto unexplored orbital correlations, quantify and explain the origin of the anomalous resistivity, and present dynamical properties across the metal-insulator transition., Comment: 6 pages with 5 figs

We study the behavior of magnetic superconductors which involve a local attractive interaction between electrons, and a coupling between local moments and the electrons. We solve this `Hubbard-Kondo' model through a variational minimization at zero temperature and validate the results via a Monte Carlo based on static auxiliary field decomposition of the Hubbard interaction. Over a magnetic coupling window that widens with increasing attractive interaction the ground state supports simultaneous magnetic and superconducting order. The pairing amplitude remains s-wave like, without significant spatial modulation, while the magnetic phase evolves from a ferromagnet, through non-collinear `spiral' states, to a Neel state with increasing density and magnetic coupling. We find that at intermediate magnetic coupling the antiferromagnetic-superconducting state is gapless, except for the regime of Neel order. We map out the phase diagram in terms of density, magnetic coupling and attractive interaction, establish the electron dispersion and effective `Fermi surface' in the ground state, provide an estimate of the magnetic and superconducting temperature scales via Monte Carlo, and compare our results to available data on the borocarbides., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

We study the effect of high population imbalance in the two dimensional attractive Hubbard model, in the coupling regime corresponding to BCS-BEC crossover, and focus on thermal effects on the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. Using a method that retains all the classical thermal fluctuations on the FFLO state we estimate a very low $T_c$ and infer a strongly first order normal state to FFLO transition. The $T_c$ is an order of magnitude below the mean field estimate. We track the fermionic momentum distribution, the density of states, and the pairing structure factor deep into the normal state. The pairing structure factor retains weak signature of finite momentum pairing to a high temperature despite the low $T_c$ itself, while the spin resolved density of states changes from the `pseudogapped' FFLO character to gapless and pseudogapped again with increasing temperature. These results map out the rather narrow temperature window, and diverse physical indicators, relevant to FFLO states on a cold atom optical lattice, and complements our work on the lower field `breached pair' state., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. In a Fermi superfluid increasing population imbalance leads initially to reduction of the transition temperature, then the appearance of modulated Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states, and finally the suppression of pairing itself. For interaction strength such that the `balanced' system has a normal state pseudogap, increasing imbalance reveals anomalous spectral behavior. At a fixed weak imbalance (small polarization) the stable homogeneous superfluid occurs only above a certain temperature. The density of states has a minimum at the Fermi level, then a weak peak {\it within the gap}, and then the large, gap edge, coherence features. On heating, this non monotonic energy dependence changes to a more conventional fluctuation driven pseudogap, with a monotonic energy dependence. At large imbalance the ground state is FFLO and `pseudogapped' due to the modulated order. It changes to a gapless normal state on heating, and then shows a pseudogap again at a higher temperature. These weak imbalance and strong imbalance features both involve effects well beyond mean field theory. We establish them by using a Monte Carlo technique on large lattices, motivate the results in terms of the pairing field distribution, and compare them to spectroscopic results in the imbalanced unitary Fermi gas., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. The pyrochlore lattice involves corner sharing tetrahedra and the resulting geometric frustration is believed to suppress any antiferromagnetic order for Mott insulators on this structure. There are nevertheless short-range correlations which could be vital near the Mott-Hubbard insulator-metal transition. We use a static auxiliary-field-based Monte Carlo to study this problem in real space on reasonably large lattices. The method reduces to unrestricted Hartree-Fock at zero temperature but captures the key magnetic fluctuations at finite temperature. Our results reveal that increasing interaction drives the non magnetic (semi) metal to a 'spin disordered' metal with small local moments, at some critical coupling, and then, through a small pseudogap window, to a large moment, gapped, Mott insulating phase at a larger oupling. The spin disordered metal has a finite residual resistivity which grows with interaction strength, diverging at the upper coupling. We present the resistivity, optical conductivity, and density of states across the metal-insulator transition and for varying temperature. We study s-wave superconductivity in the attractive Hubbard model in an applied magnetic field and assume the extreme Pauli limit where the orbital critical field is much greater than the Zeeman critical field. We work at a coupling corresponding roughly to the peak $T_c$ in the BCS to BEC crossover window and retain the crucial amplitude and phase fluctuations. At low field, as expected, the superconductor undergoes a second order thermal transition to the normal state, and is only weakly magnetized near $T_c$. At intermediate fields the thermal transition is still second order, but the magnetization is significantly larger, characteristic of a `breached pair' state. At strong field, the thermal transition is first order and our Monte Carlo reveals the presence of a metastable Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. At even higher fields we observe the true FFLO ground state. We present the full `field-temperature' phase diagram of this strong coupling problem, revealing $T_c$ scales an order of magnitude below the mean field estimate, compute the superconducting and magnetic order parameters, and map out the directly measurable magnetic structure factor. We compare these trends to results on the Pauli limited heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$, and the cold atomic Fermi gas at unitarity. Advances in scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveal the presence of superconducting nanoregions well past the bulk thermal transition in strongly disordered superconductors. We use a Monte Carlo tool to capture the spatially differentiated amplitude and phase fluctuations in such a material and establish spatial maps of the coherence peak as the superconductor is driven through the thermal transition. Analysis of the local density of states reveals that superconducting regions shrink and fragment with increasing temperature, but survive in small clusters to a temperature $T_{clust} >> T_{c}$ . The gap (or pseudogap) in the spectrum survives in general to another independent scale, $T_{g}$, depending on the strength of interaction. The BCS to BEC crossover in attractive Fermi systems is a prototype of weak to strong coupling evolution in many body physics. While extensive numerical results are available, and several approximate methods have been developed, most of these schemes are unsuccessful in the presence of spatial inhomogeneity. Such situations call for a real space approach that can handle large spatial scales and retain the crucial thermal fluctuations. With this in mind, we present comprehensive results of a real space auxiliary field approach to the BCS to BEC crossover in the attractive Hubbard model in two dimensions. The scheme reproduces the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov ground state, and leads to a $T_c$ scale that agrees with quantum Monte Carlo estimates to within a few percent. We provide results on the $T_c$, amplitude and phase fluctuations, density of states, and the momentum resolved spectral function over the entire interaction and temperature window. Attractive interaction between fermions can lead to pairing and superfluidity in an optical lattice. In contrast to the `continuum', on a lattice the trap induced density variation can generate a non monotonic profile of the pairing amplitude, and completely modify the spectral signatures of any possible pseudogap phase. Using a tool that fully captures the inhomogeneity and strong thermal fluctuations, we demonstrate how the crucial radio frequency signatures of pairing are `inverted' in a trapped attractive fermion lattice compared to the traditional continuum case. While insensitive to weak non magnetic disorder, an s-wave superconductor can be driven insulating by strong disorder. Using a scheme that captures the correct ground state, and fully retains thermal amplitude and phase fluctuations, we describe the disorder driven superconductor-insulator transition at finite temperature. Our results on the resistivity suggest that beyond moderate disorder the low temperature superconducting state can arise out of an insulating normal state. We also find that the low frequency weight in the density of states and optical conductivity are non monotonic in disorder, with a maximum near critical disorder, and their high temperature value correlate with the superconducting fraction in the disordered ground state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. We study the half-filled Hubbard model on the geometrically frustrated face centered cubic (FCC) lattice, using an auxiliary field based real space technique. The low temperature state is a paramagnetic metal at weak interaction, an antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI) with flux like order at intermediate interaction, and an AFI with `C type' order at very strong interaction. Remarkably, there is a narrow window between the paramagnetic metal and the AFI where the system exhibits spin glass behaviour arising from the presence of disordered but `frozen' local moments. The spin glass state is metallic at weaker interaction but shows crossover to pseudogap behaviour and an insulating resistivity with growing interaction. We compare our results to available experiments on FCC and pyrochlore based materials and suggest that several of these features are typical of three dimensional correlated systems with geometric frustration., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures (including supplement)

We use a novel Monte Carlo method to study the Mott transition in an anisotropic triangular lattice. The real space approach, retaining extended spatial correlations, allows an accurate treatment of non trivial magnetic fluctuations in this frustrated structure. Choosing the degree of anisotropy to mimic the situation in the quasi-two dimensional organics, $\kappa-$(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]-X, we detect a wide pseudogap phase, with anomalous spectral and transport properties, between the `ungapped' metal and the `hard gap' Mott insulator. The magnetic fluctuations also lead to pronounced momentum dependence of quasiparticle damping and pseudogap formation on the Fermi surface as the Mott transition is approached. Our predictions about the `bad metal' state have a direct bearing on the organics where they can be tested via tunneling, angle resolved photoemission, and magnetic structure factor measurement., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures (including supplement)

In their ideal structure, double perovskites like Sr_2FeMoO_6 have alternating Fe and Mo along each cubic axes, and a homogeneous ferromagnetic metallic ground state. Imperfect annealing leads to the formation of structural domains. The moments on mislocated Fe atoms that adjoin each other across the domain boundary have an antiferromagnetic coupling between them. This leads to a peculiar magnetic state, with ferromagnetic domains coupled antiferromagnetically. At short distance the system exhibits ferromagnetic correlation while at large lengthscales the net moment is strongly suppressed due to inter-domain cancellation. We provide a detailed description of the spin wave excitations of this complex magnetic state, obtained within a 1/S expansion, for progressively higher degree of mislocation, i.e., antisite disorder. At a given wavevector the magnons propagate at multiple energies, related, crudely, to `domain confined' modes with which they have large overlap. We provide a qualitative understanding of the trend observed with growing antisite disorder, and contrast these results to the much broader spectrum that one obtains for uncorrelated antisites.

Obtaining strong magnetoelectric couplings in bulk materials and heterostructures is an ongoing challenge. We demonstrate that manganite heterostructures of the form ${\rm (Insulator)/(LaMnO_3)_n/(CaMnO_3)_n/(Insulator)}$ show strong multiferroicity in magnetic manganites where ferroelectric polarization is realized by charges leaking from ${\rm LaMnO_3}$ to ${\rm CaMnO_3}$ due to repulsion. Here, an effective nearest-neighbor electron-electron (electron-hole) repulsion (attraction) is generated by cooperative electron-phonon interaction. Double exchange, when a particle virtually hops to its unoccupied neighboring site and back, produces magnetic polarons that polarize antiferromagnetic regions. Thus a striking giant magnetoelectric effect ensues when an external electrical field enhances the electron leakage across the interface., Comment: 13 pages

Metals with large positive magnetoresistance are rare. We demonstrate that antiferromagnetic metallic states, as have been predicted for the double perovskites, are excellent candidates for huge positive magnetoresistance. An applied field suppresses long range antiferromagnetic order leading to a state with short range antiferromagnetic correlations that generate strong electronic scattering. The field induced resistance ratio can be more than tenfold, at moderate field, in a structurally ordered system, and continues to be almost twofold even in systems with upto 25 % antisite disorder. Although our explicit demonstration is in the context of a two dimensional spin-fermion model of the double perovskites, the mechanism we uncover is far more general, complementary to the colossal negative magnetoresistance process, and would operate in other local moment metals that show a field driven suppression of non-ferromagnetic order., Comment: 4.5 pages, pdflatex, 5 embedded figures

A Fermi liquid with weak attractive interaction undergoes a BCS transition to a superconductor with reducing temperature. With increasing interaction strength, the thermal transition is progressively modified as the high temperature `metallic' phase develops a pseudogap due to pairing fluctuations and the resistivity above T_c shows insulating behaviour. The crossover to insulating character occurs much before the system can be considered to be in the BEC regime of preformed fermion pairs. We use a new Monte Carlo tool to map out the BCS-BEC crossover in the attractive Hubbard model on large two dimensional lattices and explicitly compute the resistivity to demonstrate how the metal to superconductor (MS) thermal transition at weak coupling crosses over to an insulator to superconductor (IS) transition at intermediate coupling. Double perovskites of the form A_2BB'O_6 usually involve a transition metal ion, B, with a large magnetic moment, and a non magnetic ion B'. While many double perovskites are ferromagnetic, studies on the underlying model reveal the possibility of antiferromagnetic phases as well driven by electron delocalisation. In this paper we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic ground state and T_c scales of the minimal double perovskite model in three dimensions using a combination of spin-fermion Monte Carlo and variational calculations. In contrast to two dimensions, where the effective magnetic lattice is bipartite, three dimensions involves a geometrically frustrated face centered cubic (FCC) lattice. This promotes non-collinear spiral states and `flux' like phases in addition to collinear anti-ferromagnetic order. The presence of attractive interaction between fermions can lead to pairing and superfluidity in an optical lattice. The temperature needed to observe superfluidity is about a tenth of the tunneling energy in the optical lattice, and currently beyond experimental reach. However, at strong coupling the precursors to global superfluidity should be visible at achievable temperatures, in terms of fluctuating domains with strong pairing correlations. We explore this regime of the attractive two dimensional fermion Hubbard model, in the presence of a confining potential, using a new Monte Carlo technique. We capture the low temperature inhomogeneous superfluid state with its unusual spectral signatures but mainly focus on the experimentally accessible intermediate temperature state. In this regime, and for the trap center density we consider, there is a large pairing amplitude at the center, spatially correlated into domains extending over several lattice spacings. In addition to the well known ferromagnetism, double perovskites are also expected to exhibit antiferromagnetic (AF) order driven by electron delocalisation. This has been seen in model Hamiltonian studies and confirmed via ab initio calculations. The AF phases should occur, for example, on sufficient electron doping of materials like Sr_2FeMoO_6 (SFMO) via La substitution for Sr. Clear experimental indication of such AF order is limited, possibly because of increase in antisite disorder with La doping on SFMO, although intriguing signatures of non ferromagnetic behaviour are seen. We study the survival of electronically driven antiferromagnetism in the presence of spatially correlated antisite disorder and extract the signals in magnetism and transport. We discover that A and G type AF order, that is predicted in the clean limit, is actually suppressed less strongly than ferromagnetism by antisite disorder. The AF phases are metallic, and, remarkably, more conducting that the ferromagnet for similar antisite disorder. Several double perovskite materials of the form A_2BB'O_6 exhibit high ferromagnetic T_c, and significant low field magnetoresistance. They are also a candidate source of spin polarized electrons. The potential usefulness of these materials is, however, frustrated by mislocation of the B and B' ions, which do not organise themselves in the ideal alternating structure. The result is a strong dependence of physical properties on preparative conditions, reducing the magnetization and destroying the half-metallicity. We provide the first results on the impact of spatially correlated antisite disorder, as observed experimentally, on the ferromagnetic double perovskites. We construct an effective spin model from the coupled spin-fermion problem appropriate to double perovskites of the form A_2BB'O_6. The magnetic model that emerges is reminiscent of double exchange and we illustrate this `reduction' in detail for the case of perfect B-B' structural order, i.e, no antisite disorder. We estimate the effective exchange between the magnetic B ions in terms of the electronic parameters, study the `classical' magnetic model using Monte Carlo techniques, and compare this approach to a full numerical solution of the spin-fermion problem. The agreement is reasonable, and promises a quick estimate of magnetic properties when coupled with ab initio electronic structure. We study the effect of A site disorder on magnetic field induced melting of charge order (CO) in half doped manganites using a Monte-Carlo technique. Strong A-site disorder destroys CO even without an applied field. At moderate disorder, the zero field CO state survives but has several intriguing features in its field response. Our spatially resolved results track the broadening of the field melting transition due to disorder and explain the unusual dependence of the melting scales on bandwidth and disorder.
