Cationic liposomes are good candidates as gene carriers in cell biology due to their ability to bind DNA through electrostatic interactions. These molecules are used as non-viral delivery systems in the gene therapy of glioma. pH-dependency and transfection efficiency of seven novel lipids (MORF-1, MORF-2, MORF-3, PIPR-1, PIPR-2, MM54 and DC-Amy) were studied. Two of these molecules (PIPR-2 and MM54) show a better transfection efficiency than that of some commercially available liposomes.

14. Late Cenozoic tectonism and landscape development in the foreland of the Andes: Northern Sierras Pampeanas (26°-28°S), Argentina.

- Abstract
The Argentine Sierras Pampeanas are reverse fault-bounded mountain blocks of Precambrian to Paleozoic basement rocks in the foreland of the central Andes. Uplift in the northernmost Sierras Pampeanas fault blocks of Sierra de Quilmes, Sierra Cumbres Calchaquíes, and Sierra Aconquija started about 7 Ma and became pronounced between 4 and 3.4 Ma. The movements culminated after 2.9 Ma, when the conformable Mio/Pliocene Santa María Group was overthrusted, faulted, and folded in the course of principal basement uplift. These movements created climate and base level conditions that resulted in the formation of five pediment levels in the deformed basin strata between 2.5 and 0.3 Ma. Tectonically induced base level changes in the piedmont resulted in three tectonism-related pediment surfaces between 2.5 and 0.6 Ma, which attest to the neotectonic activity in the Andean foreland. The chronology of young tectonic uplift contradicts models in which early uplift between 20 and 13 Ma is due to the interaction between high topography on the subducting Nazca Plate and the South American craton. In conjunction with the principal uplift of the adjacent Puna Plateau the northernmost Sierras Pampeanas are better explained by E-W compressional stresses superposed on a thinned lithosphere and inherited zones of structural weakness that facilitated uplift. - Abstract
DOCSPER—A Synthetic Lipid Fit for In Vivo ApplicationDOCSPER [1,3-Dioleoyloxy-2-(N5-carbamoyl-spermine)-propane] is a cationic amphiphile consisting of a hydrophobic 1,3 dioleylglycerol moiety and threefold positively charged spermine head group (1). We optimised the 5-step-synthesis of the lipospermine and after up-scaling we have obtained sufficient amounts to initiate preclinical investigations. DOCSPER was tested for its ability to transfect eukaryotic cells in vitro. It has proven to possess high transfection efficiency in comparison to commercially available liposomal transfection agents. Furthermore, DOCSPER was extensively tested in several in vivo studies (23). These studies revealed a high transfection efficiency, whereas very low toxicity levels were detected. Thus, the results clearly indicate that the cationic lipid DOCSPER is a reliable, low-risk system for broad applications in gene therapy.

- Abstract
Background: Status migrainosus (SM) is defined as a debilitating migraine attack lasting more than 72 hours in patients previously known to suffer from migraine headache. Typically, these attacks fail to respond to over the counter and abortive medications. The sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) plays a critical role in propagating both pain and the autonomic symptoms commonly associated with migraines. SPG block via transnasal lidocaine is moderately effective in reducing migraine symptoms, but this approach is often poorly tolerated and the results are inconsistent. We proposed that an SPG block using a suprazygomatic injection approach would be a safe and effective option to abort or alleviate pain and autonomic symptoms of SM., Methods: Through a retrospective records review, we identified patients with a well-established diagnosis of migraine, based on the International Headache Society criteria. Patients selected for study inclusion were diagnosed with SM, had failed to respond to 2 or more abortive medications, and had received a suprazygomatic SPG block. Patients had also been asked to rate their pain on a 1-10 Likert scale, both before and 30 minutes after the injection., Results: Eighty-eight consecutive patients (20 men and 68 women) received a total of 252 suprazygomatic SPG block procedures in the outpatient headache clinic after traditional medications failed to abort their SM. At 30 minutes following the injections, there was a 67.2% (±26.6%) reduction in pain severity with a median reduction of 5 points (IQR= -6 to -3) on the Likert scale (ranging from 1 to 10). Overall, patients experienced a statistically significant reduction in pain severity (P < .0001)., Conclusion: The SPG is known to play an integral role in the pathophysiology of facial pain and the trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias, although its exact role in the generation and maintenance of migraine headache remains unclear. Regional anesthetic suprazygomatic SPG block is potentially effective for immediate relief of SM. We believe the procedure is simple to perform and has minimal risk., (© 2018 American Headache Society.)

- Abstract
Background: Herbaceous plants are common vegetal species generally exposed, for a limited period of time, to bioavailable environmental pollutants. Heavy metals contamination is the most common form of environmental pollution. Herbaceous plants have never been used as natural bioindicators of environmental pollution, in particular to monitor the amount of heavy metals in soil. In this study, we aimed at assessing the usefulness of using three herbaceous plants (Plantago major L., Taraxacum officinale L. and Urtica dioica L.) and one leguminous (Trifolium pratense L.) as alternative indicators to evaluate soil pollution by heavy metals., Results: We employed Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) to assess the concentration of selected heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cr and Pd) in soil and plants and we employed statistical analyses to describe the linear correlation between the accumulation of some heavy metals and selected vegetal species. We found that the leaves of Taraxacum officinale L. and Trifolium pratense L. can accumulate Cu in a linearly dependent manner with Urtica dioica L. representing the vegetal species accumulating the highest fraction of Pb., Conclusions: In this study we demonstrated that common plants can be used as an alternative analytical tool for monitoring selected heavy metals in soil.
