Abstract: Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. Abstract: We measure the two-point density correlation function of freely expanding quasicondensates in the weakly interacting quasi-one-dimensional (1D) regime. While initially suppressed in the trap, density fluctuations emerge gradually during expansion as a result of initial phase fluctuations present in the trapped quasicondensate. Asymptotically, they are governed by the thermal coherence length of the system. Our measurements take place in an intermediate regime where density correlations are related to near-field diffraction effects and anomalous correlations play an important role. Comparison with a recent theoretical approach described by Imambekov et al. yields good agreement with our experimental results and shows that density correlations can be used for thermometry of quasicondensates., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, minor changes

3. Single-particle-sensitive imaging of freely propagating ultracold atoms

Abstract: We present a novel imaging system for ultracold quantum gases in expansion. After release from a confining potential, atoms fall through a sheet of resonant excitation laser light and the emitted fluorescence photons are imaged onto an amplified CCD camera using a high numerical aperture optical system. The imaging system reaches an extraordinary dynamic range, not attainable with conventional absorption imaging. We demonstrate single-atom detection for dilute atomic clouds with high efficiency where at the same time dense Bose-Einstein condensates can be imaged without saturation or distortion. The spatial resolution can reach the sampling limit as given by the 8 \mu m pixel size in object space. Pulsed operation of the detector allows for slice images, a first step toward a 3D tomography of the measured object. The scheme can easily be implemented for any atomic species and all optical components are situated outside the vacuum system. 4. Density ripples in expanding low-dimensional gases as a probe of correlations

Abstract: We investigate theoretically the evolution of the two-point density correlation function of a low-dimensional ultracold Bose gas after release from a tight transverse confinement. In the course of expansion thermal and quantum fluctuations present in the trapped systems transform into density fluctuations. For the case of free ballistic expansion relevant to current experiments, we present simple analytical relations between the spectrum of ``density ripples'' and the correlation functions of the original confined systems. We analyze several physical regimes, including weakly and strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose gases and two-dimensional (2D) Bose gases below the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. For weakly interacting 1D Bose gases, we obtain an explicit analytical expression for the spectrum of density ripples which can be used for thermometry. For 2D Bose gases below the BKT transition, we show that for sufficiently long expansion times the spectrum of the density ripples has a self-similar shape controlled only by the exponent of the first-order correlation function. This exponent can be extracted by analyzing the evolution of the spectrum of density ripples as a function of the expansion time., Comment: Final published version

Abstract: Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2022, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract: Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2022, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract: Charged hadron identification in the Compressed Baryonic Matter experiment (CBM) is realized via the Time-of-Flight method [1]. For this purpose the CBM-ToF collaboration designed a Time-of-Flight wall composed of Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs). Due to the high interaction rate in CBM of 10 MHz the key challenge is the development of high rate MRPCs above 25 kHz/cm² which become possible after the development of low resistive glass with extremely good quality. In this article we present the actual conceptual design of the ToF-wall which is subdivided in three parts namely the outer wall, the inner wall and the forward zone that are discussed in detail.

Abstract: German unification in 1871 triggered a wave of enthusiasm for the fatherland amongst German migrants worldwide. Britain was no exception. National confidence and coherence received a boost through the new symbols of ‘Kaiser’ and ‘Reich’. From the 1880s onwards, more and more militaristic and chauvinistic undertones could be heard. Local branches of German patriotic and militaristic pressure groups were founded in Britain. Support for Germany’s ‘new course’ of colonialist expansion and its ambitious naval programme was, however, not confined to right–wing groups but permeated ethnic life in general. Religion and nationalism stood in a symbiotic relationship; some German academics lecturing at British universities displayed chauvinistic attitudes; social clubs were increasingly dominated by an atmosphere of ‘Reich’–nationalism. Abstract: We investigate theoretically the evolution of the two-point density correlation function of a low-dimensional ultracold Bose gas after release from a tight transverse confinement. In the course of expansion thermal and quantum fluctuations present in the trapped systems transform into density fluctuations. For the case of free ballistic expansion relevant to current experiments, we present simple analytical relations between the spectrum of “density ripples” and the correlation functions of the original confined systems. We analyze several physical regimes, including weakly and strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose gases and two-dimensional (2D) Bose gases below the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. For weakly interacting 1D Bose gases, we obtain an explicit analytical expression for the spectrum of density ripples which can be used for thermometry. For 2D Bose gases below the BKT transition, we show that for sufficiently long expansion times the spectrum of the density ripples has a self-similar shape controlled only by the exponent of the first-order correlation function. This exponent can be extracted by analyzing the evolution of the spectrum of density ripples as a function of the expansion time.

42. Academic versus Community Retinal Surgery for Primary Retinal Detachment: Characteristics, Duration, and Value Analysis of Teaching Modifier.

Abstract: Purpose: To compare operative time and case characteristics of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repairs between academic and community vitreoretinal surgeons., Design: A retrospective, observational clinical study., Subjects: Patients who underwent primary RRD repair surgeries at Massachusetts Eye and Ear between 2019 and 2021., Methods: A random sample of 20 vitreoretinal surgeons distributed evenly among the academic or community setting was selected. Fifteen consecutive cases of primary RRD repair surgeries were included from each surgeon. A cost analysis was performed for the teaching modifier for the physician fee and for hospital costs., Main Outcome Measures: Length of surgery., Results: Of 300 primary RRD repairs, fellows were present in 75%, which comprised all academic surgeon cases and 50% of community surgeon cases, P < 0.001. Mean operation length was shorter for community surgeon cases without fellows (55.0 ± 24.1) than either academic (73.0 ± 30.8) or community surgeon cases with fellows (75.7 ± 32.5) (P < 0.001). There was a higher percentage of macula-off RRDs in academic versus community surgeon cases (52.7% vs. 38.0%, P = 0.002) and higher rates of combined scleral buckle (SB)/pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) repairs (14% vs. 3%, P < 0.001). When excluding combined SB/PPV cases, there was no difference in operative time between academic and community surgeon cases. Among RRDs repaired by PPV only, there was a 31.4% (16.6 minutes) greater procedure duration in cases with fellows compared with cases without fellows (P < 0.001). Covariates associated with greater surgery time: addition of an SB (β = 32.6), membrane peel (β = 18.5), presence of a fellow (β = 14.5), proliferative vitreoretinopathy (β = 12.8), and greater number of retinal breaks (β = 2.4). The teaching modifier adds 16% extra reimbursement ($184.16) to the physician fee, which is 50.9% of what is necessary to cover the percentage increase in surgeon time (31.4%). Using a time-driven activity-based costing for hospital costs, the extra 16.6 minutes leads to an additional $1038.00, which is 5.6 times more than the reimbursement for the modifier., Conclusions: Retinal detachment repair cases performed by academic surgeons are more likely to be macula-off and include the addition of an SB, which drive longer operative times. Abstract: Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a known risk factor for the development of food allergy (FA). Prior work has suggested disparities in diagnosis/management of FA in urban populations., Objective: To determine whether socioeconomic conditions, as measured by the area deprivation index and insurance status, or racial/ethnic self-identity was associated with risk of FA diagnosis (DFA), evaluation by an allergist, or objective FA testing among high-risk children with AD., Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of pediatric patients with physician-diagnosed AD who had received primary care at a single urban academic tertiary care center between 2009 and 2022. Statistical analysis in SPSS (IBM Corp. Released 2017. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0, Armonk, NY) used χ 2 , analysis of variance, and logistic regression., Results: In a total of 3365 pediatric subjects, 41.3% identified as non-Hispanic Black, 33.9% Hispanic, 6.9% Asian, and 14.9% non-Hispanic White. Hispanic children with AD and DFA were significantly less likely to be evaluated by an allergist than White or Asian children (65.9% vs 82.8% and 80.3%, P = .001 and P = .02). Non-Hispanic Black children with AD and DFA were more likely to have no objective FA testing than White children (20.9% vs 12.1%, P = .04). The White and Asian children were more likely to undergo the thorough combination of both blood and skin testing for DFA than Black or Hispanic children (15.5% and 22.4% vs 7.1% and 7.9%, respectively, P = .007, P = .00005, P = .03, P = .0008)., Conclusion: Labeling at-risk young children with FA without thorough objective testing can affect their nutrition and quality of life. Abstract: Background: Lower limb amputation does not affect only physical and psychological functioning but the use of a prosthetic device can also lead to increased cognitive demands. Measuring cognitive load objectively is challenging, and therefore, most studies use questionnaires that are easy to apply but can suffer from subjective bias. Motivated by this, the present study investigated whether a mobile eye tracker can be used to objectively measure cognitive load by monitoring gaze behavior during a set of motor tasks., Methods: Five prosthetic users and eight able-bodied controls participated in this study. Eye tracking data and kinematics were recorded during a set of motor tasks (level ground walking, walking on uneven terrain, obstacle avoidance, stairs up and ramp down, as well as ramp up and stairs down) while the participants were asked to focus their gaze on a visual target for as long as possible. Target fixation times and increase in pupil diameters were determined and correlated to subjective ratings of cognitive load., Findings: Overall, target fixation time and pupil diameter showed strong negative and positive correlations, respectively, to the subjective rating of cognitive load in the able-bodied controls (-0.75 and 0.80, respectively). However, the individual correlation strength, and in some cases, even the sign, was different across participants. A similar trend could be observed in prosthetic users., Interpretation: The results of this study showed that a mobile eye tracker may be used to estimate cognitive load in prosthesis users during locomotor tasks. This paves the way to establish a new approach to assessing cognitive load, which is objective and yet practical and simple to administer. 45. Respiratory exposure to agricultural dust extract promotes increased intestinal Tnfα expression, gut barrier dysfunction, and endotoxemia in mice.

Abstract: Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are responsible for the production of global greenhouse gases and harmful environmental pollutants including hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and particulate matter. Swine farmers are frequently exposed to organic dust that is proinflammatory in the lung and are thus at greater risk of developing pneumonia, asthma, and other respiratory conditions. In addition to respiratory disease, air pollutants are directly associated with altered gastrointestinal (GI) physiology and the development of GI diseases, thereby highlighting the gut-lung axis in disease progression. Instillation of hog dust extract (HDE) for 3 wk has been reported to promote the development of chronic airway inflammation in mice, however, the impact of HDE exposure on intestinal homeostasis is poorly understood. We report that 3-wk intranasal exposure of HDE is associated with increased intestinal macromolecule permeability and elevated serum endotoxin concentrations in C57BL/6J mice. In vivo studies also indicated mislocalization of the epithelial cell adhesion protein, E-cadherin, in the colon as well as an increase in the proinflammatory cytokine, Tnfα , in the proximal colon. Moreover, mRNA expression of the Paneth cell-associated marker, Lyz1 , was increased the proximal colon, whereas the expression of the goblet cell marker, Muc2 , was unchanged in the epithelial cells of the ileum, cecum, and distal colon. These results demonstrate that airway exposure to CAFOs dusts promote airway inflammation and modify the gastrointestinal tract to increase intestinal permeability, induce systemic endotoxemia, and promote intestinal inflammation. Therefore, this study identifies complex physiological consequences of chronic exposure to organic dusts derived from CAFOs on the gut-lung axis. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Agricultural workers have a higher prevalence of occupational respiratory symptoms and are at greater risk of developing respiratory diseases. However, gastrointestinal complications have also been reported, yet the intestinal pathophysiology is understudied. This work is novel because it emphasizes the role of an inhaled environmental pollutant on the development of intestinal pathophysiological outcomes. This work will provide foundation for other studies evaluating how agricultural dusts disrupts host physiology and promotes debilitating gastrointestinal and systemic disorders.

46. Using embedded prosthesis sensors for clinical gait analyses in people with lower limb amputation: A feasibility study.

Abstract: Background: Biomechanical gait analyses are typically performed in laboratory settings, and are associated with limitations due to space, marker placement, and tasks that are not representative of the real-world usage of lower limb prostheses. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of accurately measuring gait parameters using embedded sensors in a microprocessor-controlled knee joint., Methods: Ten participants were recruited for this study and equipped with a Genium X3 prosthetic knee joint. They performed level walking, stair/ramp descent, and ascent. During these tasks, kinematics and kinetics (sagittal knee and thigh segment angle, and knee moment) were recorded using an optical motion capture system and force plates (gold standard), as well as the prosthesis-embedded sensors. Root mean square errors, relative errors, correlation coefficients, and discrete outcome variables of clinical relevance were calculated and compared between the gold standard and the embedded sensors., Findings: The average root mean square errors were found to be 0.6°, 5.3°, and 0.08 Nm/kg, for the knee angle, thigh angle, and knee moment, respectively. The average relative errors were 0.75% for the knee angle, 11.67% for the thigh angle, and 9.66%, for the knee moment. The discrete outcome variables showed small but significant differences between the two measurement systems for a number of tasks (higher differences only at the thigh)., Interpretation: The findings highlight the potential of prosthesis-embedded sensors to accurately measure gait parameters across a wide range of tasks. Abstract: Background & Aims: Loss-of-function variants in the PTPN2 gene are associated with increased risk of inflammatory bowel disease. We recently showed that Ptpn2 is critical for intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) barrier maintenance, IEC-macrophage communication, and modulation of the gut microbiome in mice, restricting expansion of a small intestinal pathobiont associated with inflammatory bowel disease. Here, we aimed to identify how Ptpn2 loss affects ileal IEC subtypes and their function in vivo., Methods: Constitutive Ptpn2 wild-type, heterozygous, and knockout (KO) mice, as well as mice with inducible deletion of Ptpn2 in IECs, were used in the study. Investigation was performed using imaging techniques, flow cytometry, enteroid culture, and analysis of gene and protein levels of IEC markers., Results: Partial transcriptome analysis showed that expression of Paneth cell-associated antimicrobial peptides Lyz1, Pla2g2a, and Defa6 was down-regulated markedly in Ptpn2-KO mice compared with wild-type and heterozygous. In parallel, Paneth cell numbers were reduced, their endoplasmic reticulum architecture was disrupted, and the endoplasmic reticulum stress protein, C/EBP-homologous protein (CHOP), was increased in Ptpn2-KO mice. Despite reduced Paneth cell number, flow cytometry showed increased expression of the Paneth cell-stimulatory cytokines interleukin 22 and interferon γ + in CD4 + T cells isolated from Ptpn2-KO ileum. Key findings in constitutive Ptpn2-KO mice were confirmed in epithelium-specific Ptpn2 ΔIEC mice, which also showed impaired lysozyme protein levels in Paneth cells compared with Ptpn2 fl/fl control mice., Conclusions: Constitutive Ptpn2 deficiency affects Paneth cell viability and compromises Paneth cell-specific antimicrobial peptide production. 48. A review of user needs to drive the development of lower limb prostheses.

Abstract: Background: The development of bionic legs has seen substantial improvements in the past years but people with lower-limb amputation still suffer from impairments in mobility (e.g., altered balance and gait control) due to significant limitations of the contemporary prostheses. Approaching the problem from a human-centered perspective by focusing on user-specific needs can allow identifying critical improvements that can increase the quality of life. While there are several reviews of user needs regarding upper limb prostheses, a comprehensive summary of such needs for those affected by lower limb loss does not exist., Methods: We have conducted a systematic review of the literature to extract important needs of the users of lower-limb prostheses. The review included 56 articles in which a need (desire, wish) was reported explicitly by the recruited people with lower limb amputation (N = 8149)., Results: An exhaustive list of user needs was collected and subdivided into functional, psychological, cognitive, ergonomics, and other domain. Where appropriate, we have also briefly discussed the developments in prosthetic devices that are related to or could have an impact on those needs. In summary, the users would like to lead an independent life and reintegrate into society by coming back to work and participating in social and leisure activities. Efficient, versatile, and stable gait, but also support to other activities (e.g., sit to stand), contribute to safety and confidence, while appearance and comfort are important for the body image. However, the relation between specific needs, objective measures of performance, and overall satisfaction and quality of life is still an open question., Conclusions: Identifying user needs is a critical step for the development of new generation lower limb prostheses that aim to improve the quality of life of their users. However, this is not a simple task, as the needs interact with each other and depend on multiple factors (e.g., mobility level, age, gender), while evolving in time with the use of the device. Hence, novel assessment methods are required that can evaluate the impact of the system from a holistic perspective, capturing objective outcomes but also overall user experience and satisfaction in the relevant environment (daily life)., (© 2022. 49. Ten-year trends in adrenal insufficiency admissions.

Abstract: Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is a severe disease that is difficult to manage in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This study describes trends, inpatient outcomes, and the disease burden of hospitalizations for patients with AI. Data are included on hospitalizations with a principal discharge diagnosis of AI using ICD codes from the National Inpatient Sample for the years 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018. Patients <18 years and those with elective hospitalizations were excluded. From 2008 to 2018, the number of AI hospitalizations increased significantly ( P -trend < 0.001), with a rising trend in the proportion of patients with Charlson Comorbidity Index scores >3. There was a significant downward trend in the length of stay from 2008 to 2018 ( P -trend = 0.005). However, there was no statistically significant trend for mortality or mean total hospital charges during hospitalizations ( P -trend = 0.050 and 0.076, respectively). Abstract: Background: The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1893217 within the gene locus encoding PTPN2 represents a risk factor for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our previous work demonstrated reduced PTPN2 activity and subsequently increased inflammatory signaling upon presence of SNP rs1893217. The naturally occurring polyamine spermidine reduces pro-inflammatory signaling via induction of PTPN2 activity; however, the effect of SNP rs1893217 on the anti-inflammatory potential of spermidine is still unknown. Here, we investigated how presence of SNP rs1893217 affects treatment efficacy of spermidine and whether it might serve as a potential biomarker for spermidine treatment., Methods: Human T84 (wild-type [WT] for PTPN2 SNP rs1893217) and HT29 (heterozygous for PTPN2 SNP rs1893217) intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) were treated with several polyamines from the putrescine-spermidine pathway. T84 and HT29 IECs, THP-1 monocytes (WT and transfected with a lentiviral vector expressing PTPN2 SNP rs1893217) and genotyped, patient-derived peripheral blood mononuclear cells were challenged with IFN-γ and/or spermidine., Results: Among the analyzed polyamines, spermidine was the most efficient activator of PTPN2 phosphatase activity, regardless of the PTPN2 genotype. Spermidine suppressed IFN-γ-induced STAT1 and STAT3 phosphorylation, along with decreased mRNA expression of ICAM-1, NOD2, and IFNG in IECs and monocytes. Of note, these effects were clearly more pronounced when the disease-associated PTPN2 C-variant in SNP rs1893217 was present., Conclusions: Our data demonstrate that spermidine is the most potent polyamine in the putrescine-spermine axis for inducing PTPN2 enzymatic activity. The anti-inflammatory effect of spermidine is potentiated in the presence of SNP rs1893217, and this SNP might thus be a useful biomarker for possible spermidine-treatment in IBD patients., (© 2020 Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.
