Introduction: Dental urgencies and emergencies are present on many occasions and may sometimes occur in the professional practice of any dental surgeon. As a result of the constant increase in the number of individuals affected systemically, the chances of emergency situations occurring during dental practice have grown considerably. Objectives: Thus, the present study aimed to present and describe urgent and emergency situations in the dental field. Methodology: The following databases were used: PubMed, Elsevier and Scielo, in studies in Portuguese and English with a time frame from 2010 to 2022, using the descriptors: Emergency; Urgency; Dental surgeon. Results and discussion: Among the most common medical urgencies and/or emergencies that occur in a dental office, the literature highlights lipothymia, syncope, hypoglycemia, allergic reaction, seizures, airway obstruction, cardiovascular emergencies and asthma attacks. The prevalence of urgencies and emergencies is often related to the professional's conduct, which can also be caused by the lack of a clear definition of medical emergencies. However, according to the literature, lipothymia and syncope predominate in all studies. Conclusion: In this way, it is understood that the prevalence of urgencies and medical emergencies is widely present in dental practice, being essential to adopt training and simulations, which inform dental professionals about the most prevalent medical emergencies, their symptoms, therapeutics be employed in each case and equipment needed to respond to these emergencies, with the aim of ensuring that the standard of care provided to patients is of the highest level.

IntroductionScreening for G6PD deficiency can inform disease management including malaria. Treatment with the antimalarial drugs primaquine and tafenoquine can be guided by point-of-care testing for G6PD deficiency.Methods and FindingsData from similar clinical studies evaluating the performance of the STANDARD™G6PD Test (SD Biosensor, South Korea) conducted in Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States were pooled. Test performance was assessed in a retrospective analysis on capillary and venous specimens. All study sites used spectrophotometry for reference G6PD testing, and either the HemoCue or complete blood count for reference hemoglobin measurement.The sensitivity of the STANDARD™G6PD Test using the manufacturer thresholds for G6PD deficient and intermediate cases in capillary specimens from 4212 study participants was 100% (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 97.5%–100%) for G6PD deficient cases with 60% on the reference assay. Negative predictive values for females with G6PD activity >60% was 99.6% (95% CI 99.1%–99.8%) on capillary specimens. Test sensitivity among 396P. vivaxmalaria cases was 100% (69.2%–100.0%) for both deficient and intermediate cases. In the study population, a high proportion of those classified as G6PD deficient or intermediate resulted from true normal cases. Despite this, the majority cases would receive the correct medication and no true G6PD deficient cases would be treated inappropriately.ConclusionsThe STANDARD G6PD Test enables safe access to drugs which are contraindicated for individuals with G6PD deficiency. Operational considerations will inform test uptake in specific settings.

A aplicação dos materiais frios na envoltória é uma técnica passiva que pode contribuir na eficiência energética de edificações. A fim de avaliar o desempenho térmico de tintas frias nacionais, mediu-se a refletância solar em laboratório e a temperatura superficial de amostras expostas ao Sol. Os resultados indicaram diferenças significativas de refletância para tintas de mesma cor, porém com menor variação de temperatura entre elas. Contudo, a reflexão no infravermelho próximo mostrou-se mais relevante para reduzir a absorção de calor nas superfícies, comprovando-se a importância da obtenção de dados medidos em laboratório para a escolha adequada de revestimentos para edifícios.

A pseudo-hipertrofia lipomatosa do pâncreas é uma doença rara caracterizada pelo aumento focal ou difuso do pâncreas devido à substituição do parênquima exócrino por tecido adiposo. A maioria dos lipomas apresenta características de imagem que permitem sua diferenciação. Na maioria dos casos, o diagnóstico preciso é obtido sem qualquer confirmação histopatológica. Apresentamos neste artigo um caso clínico e uma breve revisão da literatura.

INTRODUÇÃO: A Síndrome de Prader-Willi é um raro distúrbio genético causado pela perda de uma parte do cromossomo 15 paterno, podendo gerar diversos problemas ao paciente, como, hipotonia, hiporreflexia, letargia, dificuldade de sucção, entre outros. OBJETIVOS: Este estudo tem como objetivo demonstrar a variedade de apresentações clínicas da síndrome, sua epidemiologia, fisiopatologia, bem como a importância do diagnóstico e tratamento precoce para que não desencadeia sintomas mais graves. APRESENTAÇÃO DO CASO: Paciente EES, de 2 anos de idade, sexo masculino, natural e procedente de Goiânia, Goiás, com familiares referindo alterações do desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor e comportamentais. Ao exame físico e de imagem foi evidenciado alterações craniofaciais, hipogenitalismo sendo feito o diagnóstico de Prader-Willi. DISCUSSÃO: o tratamento pode ser abordado pela fisioterapia, por cirurgia e por órteses. Entretanto, deve ser considerado o contexto clínico que envolve o paciente com PWS, uma vez que pode existir uma menor densidade óssea e um quadro de hipotonia, dificultando mais o resultado das intervenções. Somado a isso, existe também, uma maior chance de complicações pós cirúrgicas, tendo em vista que a hiperfagia, sintoma comum em PWS, aumentar a chance de ruptura estomacal e da ocorrência de gastroparesia. De modo que, é essencial o controle da alimentação do indivíduo após a realização do procedimento ortopédico. CONCLUSÃO: Conclui-se, portanto, que é de suma relevância médicos e profissionais da saúde conhecerem o quadro clínico da Síndrome de Prader-Willi, para que se inicie a terapia mais precocemente possível. Sendo assim, isso é importante para que não haja um diagnóstico tardio, acarretando ao paciente maiores danos como doenças crônicas degenerativas

INTRODUÇÃO: A síndrome de Ehlers-Danlos é uma doença genética rara que afeta a formação do tecido conjuntivo e a função do colágeno.Os sinais e sintomas são múltiplos,por isso torna a doença tão dificil de ser diagnosticada. As principais manifestações clínicas são hiperextensibilidade da pele,fragilidade dos tecidos como articulações,vasos sanguíneos,ligamentos,pele e órgãos internos.Atualmente,são reconhecidos 13 subtipos pela Classificação Internacional de 2017.Nesse relato de caso, foram abordados todos os subtipos de uma forma geral,apresentando suas manifestações clínicas múltiplas.O que todas têm em comum é que o diagnóstico precoce é essencial,a fim de auxiliar o diagnóstico e o tratamento. Objetivos:Evidenciar a raridade da Síndrome de Ehlers - Danlos,demonstrando que a cada ano,as atualizações sobre a doença vão se aprofundando.Entretanto,os trabalhos são muito escassos.Além disso,ressalta-se a importância de cuidados multidisciplinares,devido a manifestação variável de sintomas,tendo como consequência a dificuldade no diagnóstico. APRESENTAÇÃO DO CASO: Escolar, 15 anos,vem apresentando problemas sociais na escola por dificuldade em atividades físicas,apresentando articulações frouxas,hiperelasticidade.Ao exame físico cicatrização mal delimitada e de coloração acastanhada. DISCUSSÃO: Doença genética rara que a cada ano vem passando por atualizações.Ainda possui difícil diagnóstico,devido ao fato de apresentar múltiplos sintomas,caracterizando atualmente 13 subtipos da doença. CONCLUSÃO: É de extrema importância ressaltar que a síndrome de Ehlers-Danlos possui extrema complexidade associada fortemente a um histórico familiar positivo.Deve-se salientar que é imprescindível o uso dos critérios de Beighton para auxiliar no diagnóstico,já que é uma doença de manifestações clínicas variáveis.Quanto ao tratamento,é necessário uma abordagem multidisciplinar com foco na prevenção de complicações

Background Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a common enzyme deficiency, prevalent in many malaria-endemic countries. G6PD-deficient individuals are susceptible to hemolysis during oxidative stress, which can occur from exposure to certain medications, including 8-aminoquinolines used to treat Plasmodium vivax malaria. Accordingly, access to point-of-care (POC) G6PD testing in Brazil is critical for safe treatment of P. vivax malaria. Methodology/Principal findings This study evaluated the performance of the semi-quantitative, POC STANDARD G6PD Test (SD Biosensor, Republic of Korea). Participants were recruited at clinics and through an enriched sample in Manaus and Porto Velho, Brazil. G6PD and hemoglobin measurements were obtained from capillary samples at the POC using the STANDARD and HemoCue 201+ (HemoCue AB, Sweden) tests. A thick blood slide was prepared for malaria microscopy. At the laboratories, the STANDARD and HemoCue tests were repeated on venous samples and a quantitative spectrophotometric G6PD reference assay was performed (Pointe Scientific, Canton, MI). G6PD was also assessed by fluorescent spot test. In Manaus, a complete blood count was performed. Samples were analyzed from 1,736 participants. In comparison to spectrophotometry, the STANDARD G6PD Test performed equivalently in determining G6PD status in venous and capillary specimens under varied operating temperatures. Using the manufacturer-recommended reference value thresholds, the test’s sensitivity at the, Author summary G6PD deficiency affects an estimated 500 million people worldwide and is prevalent in many malaria-endemic settings. People with G6PD deficiency are at risk of hemolysis when exposed to certain medications, including 8-aminoquinoline drugs used to treat Plasmodium vivax malaria. Increased access to testing for G6PD deficiency at or near the point of care is critical for expanding the safe treatment of P. vivax malaria. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the performance of a point-of-care, semi-quantitative test for G6PD deficiency, the STANDARD G6PD Test, in a malaria-endemic setting in Brazil. The test was evaluated on both capillary and venous blood samples across a broad range of operating temperatures. The findings show that the STANDARD G6PD Test performed equivalently to the reference test in its ability to diagnose G6PD deficiency at the point of care. The STANDARD G6PD Test is a promising tool to aid in detecting G6PD deficiency at the point of care in Brazil.

Background Point-of-care glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) testing has the potential to make the use of radical treatment for vivax malaria safer and more effective. Widespread use of G6PD tests as part of malaria case management has been limited, in part due to due concerns regarding product usability, user training, and supervision. This study seeks to assess how well end users can understand the Standard™ G6PD Test (SD Biosensor, Suwon, South Korea) workflow, result output, and label after training. This will ultimately help inform test registration and introduction. Methods Potential G6PD test users who provide malaria case management at three sites in Brazil, Ethiopia, and India were trained on the use of the SD Biosensor Standard G6PD Test and assessed based on their ability to understand the test workflow and interpret results. The assessment was done through a questionnaire, designed to assess product usability against key technical product specifications and fulfill regulatory evidence requirements. Any participant who obtained 85% or above correct responses to the questionnaire was considered to adequately comprehend how to use and interpret the test. Results Forty-five participants, including malaria microscopists, laboratory staff, nurses, and community health workers took part in the study. Seventy-eight percent of all participants in the study (35/45) obtained passing scores on the assessment with minimal training. Responses to the multiple-choice questions indicate that most participants understood well the test intended use, safety claims, and warnings. The greatest source of error regarding the test was around the correct operating temperature. Most test results were also read and interpreted correctly, with the haemoglobin measurement being a more problematic output to interpret than the G6PD measurement. Conclusions These data results show how a standardized tool can be used to assess a user’s ability to run a point-of-care diagnostic and interpret results. When applied to the SD Biosensor Standard G6PD Test, this tool demonstrates that a range of users across multiple contexts can use the test and suggests improvements to the test instructions and training that can improve product usability, increase user comprehension, and ultimately contribute to more widespread effective use of point-of-care G6PD tests. Resumo: O presente artigo analisa o romance Grande Sertao: Veredas , de Joao Guimaraes Rosa, e a Republica , de Platao, para promover um dialogo entre a “cidade da religiao” e a kallipolis , a “bela cidade”, ambas discursivamente construidas pelos personagens Riobaldo, protagonista do romance de Rosa, e Socrates, figura central do dialogo platonico; com o intuito de refletir sobre a necessidade urgente de um “novo homem” e uma “nova sociedade”, expressas por essas duas importantes obras. Ambas revelam uma tensao dramatica: o sertao e a polis encontram-se em estado de confusao e injustica e e preciso imaginar um outro lugar em que seja possivel para o homem cuidar de sua alma. Abstract: This paper analyzes the novel Grande Sertao: Veredas , by Joao Guimaraes Rosa, and Plato’s Republic , to promote a dialogue between the “city of religion” and the kallipolis , the “Beautiful city”, both discursively built by Riobaldo, Rosa’s novel main character, and Socrates; It aims to reflect on the claim of the urgent need of a “new man” and a “new society”, expressed by these two important works. Both show a dramatic tension: the sertao and the polis are in a state of disarrangement and injustice and it is necessary to imagine another place where it could be possible for humankind to take care of the soul. O presente estudo aborda através de uma revisão de literatura, de caráter descritivo, a importância do método de padronização no processo de compra, considerando as perceptíveis dificuldades encontradas neste setor, como falta de embasamento técnico quanto aos modelos de compra utilizados, na aquisição de artigos médico-hospitalares, culminando em desperdícios por baixa qualidade, ou ainda por utilização equivocada aliada à falta de treinamento, devido trocas constantes de materiais. Nesse contexto, acrescenta-se o papel do enfermeiro como executor, ressaltando a importância do mesmo na unidade hospitalar. Desta forma, este estudo apresenta ferramentas para contribuir dentro desse cenário, agregando conhecimento teórico, científico e legal, que possa ser utilizado durante o desenvolvimento da atividade em instituições de saúde, visando racionalizar os gastos e aperfeiçoar os recursos e serviços. A realização deste estudo permite compreender a importância da padronização no processo de compra e seus benefícios juntamente com a participação do enfermeiro na aquisição dos materiais para a inserção de qualidade no âmbito hospitalar. ABSTRACT: The present study addresses, through a literature review of a descriptive character, the importance of the standardization method in the purchase process of nursing materials and equipment, considering the perceived difficulties in this sector, such as the lack of technical purchase for medical and hospital articles, causing waste due to poor quality, misuse due to constant change of models and lack of training to handle them. In this context, it is verified the fundamental role of the nurse as an executor in emphasizing its importance in the hospital unit with tools and theoretical, scientific and legal knowledge for the development of its activities in health institutions, with the objective of rationalizing the expenditures and resources and improve services. Therefore, this study aims to highlight the importance of nurses' standardization and performance in the purchasing process, focusing on the insertion of quality in the hospital context. With the survey carried out, it can be concluded that the participation of the nursing professional in the standardization of the purchasing process, makes the management of medical and hospital resources more efficient by identifying the quantity and quality of materials needed for health professionals to perform their Risk-free activities for you and your patients. As a suggestion for future research, new research on the subject is indicated for the mapping of critical factors of quality success in medical-hospital procedures based on the use of materials and equipment to support the nursing service.

Research on statistical machine translation and corpus-based approaches for cross-language information retrieval depend on the availability of multilingual data, particularly in the form of parallel corpora (collections of equivalent texts in two or more languages). However, the scarcity of parallel corpora limits the development of these applications. The Web is a vast repository of multilingual information, which has motivated research aimed at mining corpora from it. In this article, we present PPLocator an approach for locating parallel Web pages. PPLocator was designed to be effective while keeping a low processing cost, thus it avoids making exhaustive pairwise comparisons in order to identify the candidate pairs. In addition, it tries to minimize the number of pages that need to be downloaded during the intra-site crawl. An important characteristic of our approach is that it does not rely on resources such as dictionaries, translators, or language identifiers. PPLocator demands little effort from the human expert. Experiments using real Web data from over 284K pages attest for the viability of PPLocator. The results show superiority in relation to a baseline system in terms of both recall and precision, despite the fact that the baseline uses more resources.
