Abstract

The allocation of data and operations to nodes in a computer communications network is a critical issue in distributed database design. An efficient distributed database design must trade off performance and cost among retrieval and update activities at the various nodes. It must consider the concurrency control mechanism used as well as capacity constraints at nodes and on links in the network. It must determine where data will be allocated, the degree of data replication, which copy of the data will be used for each retrieval activity, and where operations such as select, project, join, and union will be performed. We develop a comprehensive mathematical modeling approach for this problem. The approach first generates units of data (file fragments) to be allocated from a logical data model representation and a characterization of retrieval and update activities. Retrieval and update activities are then decomposed into relational operations on these fragments. Both fragments and operations on them are then allocated to nodes using a mathematical modeling approach. The mathematical model considers network communication, local processing, and data storage costs. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve this mathematical formulation. 29. Accumulating Project Management Knowledge Using Process Theory

Abstract

Process theory has become an important mechanism for the accumulation of knowledge in a number of disciplines. In contrast with variance theory, which focuses on co-variation of dependent and independent variables, process theory focuses on sequences of activities, their duration and the intervals between them, as they lead to particular outcomes. For example, rather than focusing on what properties successful projects have in common, process theory focuses on what sequences of activities lead to successful projects. Thus process theory is a powerful companion to variance theory, particularly relevant to project management knowledge accumulation. However, process theory itself and methods of developing process theories are still in a nascent stage. We present a 5-level model that specifies different formulations of process theory, explaining how it can be applied and leveraged to accumulate knowledge, specifically within project management research. We conclude by considering future possibilities and challenges for process theory in project management research.

Abstract

Successful use of a computerized database by end users requires both an understanding of the structure of the database and knowledge of the available query language. Previous research has focused almost exclusively on query languages with little concern for how database structure is represented. This paper reports on an experiment that explores the influence of database structure representation on the ability of users to learn and use a database system. Four alternative representations of the same databases are developed and compared. These representations differ in semantics, symbols, and means of representing relationships. Interestingly, representation features that aid in communicating the contents of a database appear to hinder the learning of the SQL query language. We conclude that database representation is an important factor in database use and that the interaction between a database structure representation and a query language may dramatically affect database leaning and use. Abstract

The article focuses on information retrieval systems and its usefulness in business enterprises. Information systems (IS) are quickly emerging as critical resources to be leveraged for organizational productivity in many business, social, and economic enterprises. The explosive growth in information technology (IT) can be broadly attributed to the emerging novel linkages of IS/IT with several base disciplines, extending the reach of IS/IT to application domains. In this focus is on certain important and promising IS/IT frontiers identified from the perspectives of academia, industry, and federal research funding agencies. Author's objective is to focus the collective awareness of the IS community and those in related disciplines on some of the frontier developments in IS/IT with a vision of the road ahead and point to challenges and opportunities. The following emerging frontiers in IS/IT are addressed in the article: the integrated circuits revolution, object technologies, knowledge and distributed intelligence, the evolving multiagent intelligent systems, satellite networks and mobile computing and the virtual corporation of the next millennium.

Abstract

This article focuses on two semantic data models, the extended entity relationship (EER) model, and the Nijssen information analysis methodology (NIAM ) model. This article presents an empirical study that compares two popular semantic data models, the EER and NIAM. The EER model is a more powerful version of the original entity-relationship (ER) model. It is among the most widely used data modeling formalisms. The NIAM model is based on an early binary modeling work. It is widely used in Australia and Europe and is considered, along with the ER approach, to be among the major approaches used internationally. The study analyzes the effects of these modeling formalisms on analyst tasks and user tasks. This research studies the effects of different data modeling formalisms on the modeling and validation phases. This study makes a clear distinction between how users and analysts utilize data modeling, maintaining that large-scale data models will continue to be developed by analysts interacting with users. This research involves both modeling and validation tasks.

Abstract

As pointed out in the pioneering work of [WSW99, EW01], an upper level ontology allows to evaluate the ontological correctness of a conceptual model and to develop guidelines how the constructs of a conceptual modeling language should be used. In this paper we adopt the General Ontological Language (GOL), proposed in [DHHS01], for this purpose. We discuss a number of issues that arise when applying the concepts of GOL to UML class diagrams as a conceptual modeling language. We also compare our ontological analysis of some parts of the UML with the one proposed in [EW01].
