1. Stable dominance of parasitic dinoflagellates in Antarctic sponges

Abstract

Background Marine sponges are dominant components of Antarctic benthos and representative of the high endemism that characterizes this environment. All microbial groups are part of the Antarctic sponge holobionts, but microbial eukaryotes have been studied less, and their symbiotic role still needs to be better understood. Here, we characterize the dynamics of microbial eukaryotes associated with Antarctic sponges, focusing on dinoflagellates over three summer periods to better understand the members, interannual variations, and trophic and lifestyle strategies. Results The analysis revealed that dinoflagellates dominate microeukaryotic communities in Antarctic sponges. The results also showed significant differences in the diversity and composition of dinoflagellate communities associated with sponges compared to those in seawater. Antarctic sponges were dominated by a single dinoflagellate family, Syndiniales Dino-Group-I-Clade 1, which was present in high abundance in Antarctic sponges compared to seawater communities. Despite minor differences, the top microeukaryotic amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) showed no significant interannual abundance changes, indicating general temporal stability within the studied sponge species. Our findings highlight the abundance and importance of parasitic groups, particularly the classes Coccidiomorphea, Gregarinomorphea, and Ichthyosporea, with the exclusive dominance of Syndiniales Dino-Group-I-Clade 1 within sponges. Conclusions The present study comprehensively characterizes the microbial eukaryotes associated with Antarctic sponges, showing a remarkable stability of parasitic dinoflagellates in Antarctic sponges. These findings underscore the significant role of parasites in these marine hosts, with implications for population dynamics of the microeukaryome and the holobiont response to a changing ocean.

Abstract

The objective is to analyze how the pandemic is an opportunity for ICT to facilitate thesis development and reduce the bias of graduates and postgraduates. The five items related to ICT and thesis of the work: Comparison of the influence of academic, social and economic factors on the development of research work of students and graduates of graduate schools of the national universities of Tacna and Arequipa, and development of a proposal for change to improve the indicators of research production 2018, applied to 503 people were analyzed. Members of SOPECIN and Ocean SRL were interviewed, who promote the use of the S.O.S. Thesis and the PRISMA methodology was executed, finding 44 articles. The results give scores of less than what they expect for the use of ICT by the teachers of the dictation of the thesis course, the teaching in the use of repositories and internet resources for the state of the art, the times of documentary procedures and the times of procedures of the reviewers, reviewers and advisers. There was a 316% increase in requests for free access to the S.O.S. Thesis, since the beginning of the pandemic. Authors of the state of the art, conclude on the importance of ICT in the university community. It is concluded that implementing software from the first moment they enter the postgraduate program will provide support for the development of the thesis and will reduce the bias between graduates and postgraduates. Abstract

Many patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) do not achieve complete control of their symptoms with current available treatments. In a dose-finding phase 2b study, ligelizumab improved urticaria symptoms in patients with H1-antihistamine (H1-AH) refractory CSU. Here, we report the efficacy and safety outcomes from two ligelizumab phase 3 studies.

9. Measuring the π0 invariant mass in NOvA using photon identification

Abstract

NOvA, the NuMI Off-Axis νe Appearance experiment, uses an established muon neutrino, or antineutrino, beam from Fermilab to study neutrino oscillations. NOvA is composed of two functionally equivalent liquid scintillator detectors; the near detector is located at Fermilab and the far detector 810 km away in Ash River, Minnesota. The νe appearance measurement relies on accurate electromagnetic energy reconstruction, which is dependent on the energy scale calibration of the detector. Studying the π0 → γγ decay, where the invariant π0 mass is directly correlated to the energy scale, we can directly “peak” at the electromagnetic energy calibration. Our sample is mainly composed of neutral pions produced through neutral current coherent neutrino scattering in the NOvA Near Detector. In this poster, we discuss the particle identification tools used to produce our sample and the latest results of the π0 invariant mass peak reconstruction.

Ultrasound technology is available in many pediatric perioperative settings. There is an increasing number of ultrasound applications for anesthesiologists which may enhance clinical performance, procedural safety, and patient outcomes. This review highlights the literature and experience supporting focused ultrasound applications in the pediatric perioperative setting across varied disciplines including anesthesiology. The review also suggests strategies for building educational and infrastructural systems to translate this technology into clinical practice.

Abstract

PURPOSE OF REVIEW The current review focuses on the new development of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients in the areas of imaging, percutaneous interventions, ventricular assist devices and transplantation. RECENT FINDINGS Since the last ACHD publication in the journal, several advances have been made in the evaluation and treatment of these patients. As CHD patients' longevity increases pregnancy, comorbities and acquired heart disease become a concern. Recent data show that the incidence of complications in low-risk CHD is not higher that the regular population. In addition, breakthrough research in percutaneous valve implantation has been published showing good outcomes but needing intensive care recovery in a significant number of patients. In the ACHD heart failure population, assist device and transplant fields mounting evidence shows that these therapies should not be the last resort since low-risk ACHD patient may have similar outcomes to those with acquired heart disease. Finally risk stratification is important in ACHD to define better ways to recover from surgery and anesthesia. SUMMARY The field of anesthesia for ACHD is growing with new indications for diagnostic, interventional and surgical procedures. An authoritative and fully illustrated study of the German military vehicles that fought in the Spanish Civil War—from motorcycles to Panzer Tanks. This comprehensive volume examines the combat and logistics vehicles that formed a vital part of the German contingent fighting in the Spanish Civil War alongside Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces. The Panzer I, which so surprised the world in the Polish campaign of World War II, was first seen in the Spanish Civil War. It appeared together with a wide range of war materiel such as antitank guns, flamethrowers, and other armaments.This book covers a wide range of vehicles, each identified in detail: from the humblest motorcycle to the Horch staff car; from Opel ‘Blitz', MAN Diesel, Mercedes, and Krupp trucks to the enormous Vomag 3LR 443 truck; as well as the many types of military ambulances seen in Spain during the war years. Abstract

Anaphylactic reaction to gelatin-containing hemostatic agents has been reported in the orthopedic literature, most commonly during scoliosis repair in adolescents. However, the risk, differential diagnosis, and management of anaphylaxis in patients with complex congenital heart disease undergoing noncardiac procedures have not been previously reported. We describe the case of an adolescent with a history of repaired truncus arteriosus undergoing posterior spinal fusion who developed sudden and profound hypotension that was ultimately confirmed to be an anaphylactic reaction to Surgiflo. Echocardiography was used to aid in diagnosis and management of the cardiovascular effects of anaphylaxis in this patient with residual cardiac pathophysiology.

Abstract

The complex resonance frequency of a vibrating edge supported plate fabricated by the methods of MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS) has been described by Goodwin et al. (J. Chem. Eng. Data 2006, 51, 190−208) and can be used to determine the density and viscosity of fluids. Working equations are required to relate the measured and desired quantities. In this article, two decoupled equations are used: one for density, the other for viscosity. For density, two expressions were evaluated. The first has been reported by Harrison et al. (Proc. SPIE 2006, 6111, 61110D) and contains three adjustable parameters, while the second is a purely empirical expression with two coefficients. For viscosity, the expression reported by Goodwin et al. (J. Chem. Eng. Data 2006, 51, 190−208) was used. Abstract

This article studies the fluid reaction on a vibrating disc immersed in a viscous fluid. The fluid is considered incompressible and Newtonian. The disc which is of negligible thickness vibrates harmonically in the direction perpendicular to its surface with an amplitude much smaller than the radius of the disc, in such a way that the non-linear terms can be neglected. The flow is axisymmetric and the velocity tends to zero away from the disc. Different approaches to this problem are presented. The first method consists in solving numerically an integral equation obtained from the Navier–Stokes equation. The second method calculates in an analytic fashion the asymptotic series for the pressure differential across the plate for large values of the dimensionless parameter β , equal to the frequency times the radius squared divided by the kinematic viscosity. The limit when β tends to zero is also studied. The analytical expressions give more reliable results when approaching the limits β large and β small than the numerical solution.

Abstract

In the petroleum industry, measurements of the density and viscosity of petroleum reservoir fluids are required to determine the value of the produced fluid and production strategy. These thermophysical properties are also useful for the design of separators and process equipment and to control production processes. To measure the density and viscosity of petroleum fluids requires a transducer that can operate up to reservoir conditions and, to guide value and exploitation calculations with sufficient rigor, provide results with an accuracy of about ± 1 % in density and ± 10 % in viscosity. Necessarily, these specifications place robustness as a superior priority to accuracy for the design. In this paper, we describe a Micro Electrical Mechanical System (MEMS) that is capable of providing both density and viscosity of fluids in which it is immersed at the desired operating conditions. Abstract

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the addition of paravertebral blockade to general anesthesia in patients undergoing robotic mitral valve repair. Design A randomized, prospective trial. Setting A single tertiary referral academic medical center. Participants 60 patients undergoing robotic mitral valve surgery. Interventions Patients were randomized to receive 4-level paravertebral blockade with 0.5% bupivicaine before induction of general anesthesia. All patients were given a fentanyl patient-controlled analgesia upon arrival to the intensive care unit, and visual analog scale pain scores were queried for 24 hours. On postoperative day 2, patients were given an anesthesia satisfaction survey. Measurements and Main Results After obtaining institutional review board approval, surgical and anesthetic data were recorded perioperatively and compared between groups. Compared to general anesthesia alone, patients receiving paravertebral blockade and general anesthesia reported significantly less postoperative pain and required fewer narcotics intraoperatively and postoperatively. Patients receiving paravertebral blockade also reported significantly higher satisfaction with anesthesia. Successful extubation in the operating room at the conclusion of surgery was 90% and similar in both groups. Hospital length of stay also was similar. No adverse reactions were reported. Conclusions The addition of paravertebral blockade to general anesthesia appears safe and can reduce postoperative pain and narcotic usage in patients undergoing minimally invasive cardiac surgery. These findings were similar to previous studies of patients undergoing thoracic procedures. Paravertebral blockade alone likely does not reduce hospital length of stay. This may be more closely related to early extubation, which is possible with or without paravertebral blockade.

Abstract

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or extracorporeal life support (ECLS) is the implementation of the cardiopulmonary bypass machine for prolonged periods of time to sustain systemic perfusion and gas exchange. The support is preferred for patients with potentially treatable pulmonary or cardiac disease. Currently, it is the most common method of mechanical circulatory support for pediatric patients. The development and improvement of this technology has allowed ECMO to progress from a salvage therapy to a commonly used treatment allowing time for cardiopulmonary recovery. Many centers have continually available rapidly deployed ECMO teams for the rapid resuscitation of patients. Some of the advantages of ECMO include rapid setup, provides both respiratory and cardiac support, reliable support with known outcomes, and a now vast clinical experience.

Orientador: Sandra Cristina dos Santos Rocha Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Quimica Resumo: O objetivo de estudo deste trabalho consistiu na análise do recobrimento de partículas em leito de jorro com atomização na base do equipamento. Estudou-se o comportamento fluidodinâmico, as propriedades de adesão entre partícula-suspensão, o crescimento da partícula e a eficiência do processo. Os ensaios foram realizados em equipamento de escala laboratorial e ângulo de base de 60º, sendo utilizados núcleos, como: vidro, ABS®, polipropileno (PP) e poliestireno (PS). Todos foram objeto de análise e classificação quanto à forma, tamanho, esfericidade, densidades absoluta e aparente, porosidade, ângulo de repouso e escoabilidade. Quanto às suspensões, foram utilizadas as poliméricas aquosas, tendo como polímero base o hidroxietilcelulose (HEC), caracterizadas pela densidade, tensão superficial, ângulo de contato e reologia. Em termos de fluidodinâmica do processo, foram avaliados parâmetros como a queda de pressão no leito, a vazão do ar de entrada, a velocidade de circulação dos sólidos e a altura da fonte. Observou-se a ocorrência de dois processos distintos: o recobrimento das partículas e a secagem da suspensão, dependendo do par úcleo-suspensão utilizado. No recobrimento das partículas, a velocidade de circulação e a queda de pressão no leito aumentam com o aumento da vazão de ar de jorro, já que se adotou como procedimento manter a altura do leito constante através do aumento da vazão de ar para que o regime de jorro permanecesse estável. Já na secagem, a velocidade de circulação das partículas diminui em função da retenção de sólidos no leito e a queda de pressão mantémse praticamente constante com o aumento do ar de jorro. A ocorrência do processo de recobrimento ou secagem é determinada pelas propriedades de adesão entre a partícula-suspensão. Ao atomizar-se as diferentes suspensões sobre os núcleos, visualizou-se que a energia superficial do sólido e a tensão superficial da suspensão influenciam a eficiência dos processos. Partículas com alta energia superficial (vidro e ABS®) foram recobertas pela suspensão, enquanto que a secagem ocorreu quando foram utilizadas partículas com menores energias superficiais (PP e PS). Sendo importante ressaltar que a tensão superficial da suspensão influencia diretamente a eficiência do recobrimento e, para a secagem, a quantidade de pó coletado no leito Abstract: The aim of this work is to analyze the coating process in a spouted bed with bottom-spray, where parameters like fluid-dynamic behavior, properties of adhesion between the particles and the suspensions, the particles growth and the process efficiency were studied. The experiments were realized in a conventional spouted bed of laboratory scale, with base angle of 60º. Inert particles, such as glass beads, ABS®, polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS), were analyzed and classified by size, shape, sphericity, absolute and apparent densities, porosity, angle of repose and flow ability. The polymeric suspension was characterized by density, surface tension and rheology. In terms of fluid-dynamic, values of bed pressure drop, spout air flow rate, solids circulation velocity and fountain height, were analyzed. The occurrence of two distinct process: the coating of the particles or the suspension drying, was observed depending on the particles-suspensions characteristics. During the particles coating, the particles circulation velocity and the bed pressure drop increased with the spout air flow rate increase. For the drying process, the particles circulation velocity decreased with the solids retention in the bed and the bed pressure drop maintained practically constant increasing the spout air flow rate. The occurrence of coating or drying process is influenced by the adhesion properties between the particle and the suspension. Atomizing the three suspensions on the four particles, it was observed that the solid surface energy and the surface tension cause some influence on the process efficiency. Particles with higher surface energy (glass beads and ABS®) were coated by the suspension, while the drying of the suspension occurred when the bed was filled with inert particles with lower surface energy (PP and PS).
