Search

A number of resources exist that guide researchers to select an appropriate repository in which to deposit their research data. Most focus repository selection through a specific lens, such as funder requirements, FAIR principles, or sensitive data. This project represents an attempt to develop one interactive tool that lets user needs determine the best path. Three objectives guided us: (1) our Decision Tree needed to account for institutional and national contexts, including funder requirements, legal and ethical frameworks, and institutional practices; (2) we wanted to help researchers make informed decisions about depositing their data and cultivate a deeper understanding of the many factors that might impact their choice; and (3) we wanted to develop a flexible and interactive tool that responds to researchers’ varying priorities and motivations. Our Decision Tree simultaneously helps researchers make the right data repository selection, introduces users to the research data landscape, and streamlines consultation processes and library workflows.

Many of the current digital preservation initiatives in Canada are focused on the preservation of research data. CARL’s Portage is a national, library-based research data management network leading a national effort to develop a research data preservation service. Portage’s Preservation Experts Group (PEG) has been established to advise Portage on the long-term stewardship and access to research data and metadata. PEG feels that a collaborative effort is required to overcome significant gaps and challenges and to build the infrastructure needed to create a sustainable research data preservation environment in Canada. This poster describes a disaggregated digital preservation strategy proposed by PEG. The proposed approach is based on OO-IO model and covers all core-functions, as articulated in the OAIS model, using a disaggregated approach through collaboration and coordination of services.

The Linear Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) is a free electron laser facility currently in its final construction stage at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The project includes two variable-gap, hybrid-permanent-magnet undulator lines: A soft x-ray undulator line with 21 undulator segments optimized for a photon energy range from 0.2 keV to 1.3 keV and a hard x-ray undulator line with 32 undulator segments designed for a photon energy range from 1.0 keV to 25.0 keV. This paper focuses on the design, development, and performance of the hard x-ray undulator line which utilizes uniquely-developed, vertically-polarizing undulators. To fully compensate the magnetic force throughout the entire gap range these devices incorporate non-linear spring systems which permit the construction of relatively compact undulators. However, significant magnetic field repeatability challenges have been encountered during prototyping of this novel design. The paper describes the innovative design improvements that were implemented which lead to reaching the LCLS-II required performance. At the heart of the LCLS-II are two undulator lines: the hard x-ray (HXR) line and the soft x-ray line (SXR). The SXR line is comprised of 21 variable gap undulator segments separated by an interspace stands with a cam positioning system capable of positioning in 5 degrees of freedom (DOF). The undulator segment motion control utilizes the Aerotech Ensemble motion controller through an EPICS Soft IOC (input-output controller). Its drive system consists of a Harmonic Drive servo system with feedback from two absolute full-gap encoders. Additional Aerotech motion controllers are used to control the cam-positioning system and phase shifters of the interspace stand. The HXR line is comprised of 32 undulator segments each including an integrated interspace assembly. The segment girder is placed on two stands with a similar cam-positioning system as in the SXR line allowing for movement in 5 DOF. As one of the design goals of the HXR line was to reuse the original LCLS girder positioning system, the motion control system is an upgraded version of that original system, using RTEMS on VME with Animatics SmartMotors., Proceedings of the 16th Int. Le présent document fournit un cadre dans lequel la préservation numérique est définie, de même qu’un ensemble de principes directeurs qui reflètent les valeurs et les engagements des organisations et des communautés qui évoluent actuellement dans ce secteur. En s’appuyant sur ces fondements, une approche fédérée à la préservation des données de recherche au Canada est proposée, qui s’appuierait sur les efforts continus de Portage pour établir des réseaux d’expertise et des communautés de pratique partout au pays. En utilisant comme guide le modèle de référence pour un système ouvert d’archivage d’information (OAIS), il est recommandé que Portage appuie l’établissement d’un réseau d’archives coordonné et distribué, qui désigne collectivement les « fournisseurs de services de préservation » (FSP), afin de répondre aux besoins des chercheurs canadiens en matière de gestion des données. Le modèle proposé répartirait six fonctions OAIS selon trois secteurs : Les services de dépôt, qui s’occuperaient des fonctions Intégration, Accès et Gestion des données du modèle OAIS. Cela pourrait comprendre les deux plateformes de dépôt actuellement prises en charge par Portage, le Dépôt fédéré de données de recherche (DFDR) et Dataverse, ainsi que n’importe quel nombre de dépôts spécialisés et institutionnels basés au Canada. Les services de préservation, qui s’occuperaient des fonctions d’Archivage dans le modèle OAIS et qui pourraient être entrepris par l’entremise d’un réseau coordonné de FSP numériques. This paper provides a framework within which digital preservation is defined, and provides a set of guiding principles that reflect the values and commitments of organizations and communities currently involved in this area of work. Based on this foundation, a federated approach to research data preservation in Canada is proposed, which would build on Portage’s ongoing efforts to build networks of expertise and communities of practice across the country. Using the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model as a guide, it is recommended that Portage support the development of a distributed coordinated network of archives, collectively referred to as “Preservation Service Providers” (PSPs), in order to meet the data management needs of Canadian researchers. The model proposed would disaggregate six OAIS functions into three areas: Repository Services, which would handle the Ingest, Access and Data Management functions of the OAIS model. This could include the two repository technologies currently supported by Portage, the Federated Research Data Repository (FRDR) and Dataverse, as well as any number of domain and institutional repositories based in Canada. Preservation Services, which would handle the Archival Storage functions within the OAIS model and which could be undertaken as through a coordinated network of digital preservation service providers (PSPs). Planning and Monitoring, in which Portage would be responsible for Administrative functions, and where Preservation Planning responsibilities would be shared between Portage and the PSPs. Next steps proposed for the Portage Network to achieve this vision of a federated digital preservation network include: ● Building a common understanding of basic digital preservation requirements in order to determine the core attributes of a sustainable and distributed digital preservation infrastructure for research data in Canada. ● Cultivating and nourishing partnerships with national and regional stakeholders to align existing and emerging services, coordinate communications, outreach and advocacy, and explore collaborative funding opportunities. ● Continuing to articulate a clear and unified message on all issues related to the development of sustainable national research data preservation infrastructure. ● Defining core competencies in support of training for those responsible for research data and digital preservation activities in their respective institutions and organizations.

Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory is currently constructing the Linear Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II), a free-electron laser (FEL) which will deliver x-rays at an energy range between 0.2 keV and 5 keV at high repetition rate of up to ~1 MHz using a new 4 GeV superconducting RF linac, and at and an energy range between 1 keV and 25 keV when driven by an existing copper linac at up to 120 Hz repetition rate. To cover the full photon energy range, LCLS-II includes two variable-gap, hybrid-permanent-magnet undulator lines: A soft x-ray undulator (SXR) line with 21 undulator segments optimized for a photon energy range from 0.2 keV to 1.3 keV plus a hard x-ray undulator (HXR) line with 32 undulator segments designed for a photon energy range from 1.0 keV to 25.0 keV. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is responsible for fabricating the 53 undulator segments. The Linear Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II) project, an upgrade to the free-electron laser facility at SLAC, is replacing the undulator system from a fixed gap to a variable gap system to enable tuning of the photon energy range. The LCLS-II project will include a soft x-ray (SXR) beam line and a hard x-ray (HXR) beam line. The SXR undulators are conventional vertical-gap horizontally-polarizing devices while the HXR undulators are novel horizontal-gap vertically-polarizing devices. This paper describes in detail the development of the SXR mechanical support structure and drive system. The effort has included extensive analysis of the various components to ensure that the undulators will perform within the design specifications. Engineering simulations undertaken and experiments performed to validate the computer modeling are presented together with measurement results from prototype and pre-production undulators., Proceedings of the 8th Int. A new free electron laser being built at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, the Linear Coherent Light Source II (LCLS-II), will use 21 soft x-ray undulators (SXR) and 32 hard x-ray undulators (HGVPU). Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is responsible for the design and manufacturing of all variable-gap, hybrid permanent-magnet undulators. The physics requirements for the undulators specify a longitudinal pole misalignment maximum rms error of 25 μm and a vertical pole misalignment maximum error of 50 μm. In addition, magnet positioning critically influences the gap-dependent field properties due to saturation effects at the smallest operational gaps. This paper discusses the manufacturing and QA methods developed to carefully control the longitudinal and vertical pole and magnet positions during undulator production. To cover the full photon energy range, LCLS-II includes two variable-gap, hybrid-type permanent magnet undulator lines: A soft x-ray undulator (SXR) line with 21 undulator segments for the photon energy range 0.2-1.3 keV plus a hard x-ray undulator (HXR) line with 32 undulator segments designed for a photon energy range from 1-5 keV when using the superconducting linac. The HXR line is also designed to support 25 keV and higher photon energies when using the existing copper linac. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is responsible for fabricating the undulators and tuning 23 of the HXR undulators.
