The marriage of Duke Vytautas the Great’s daughter Sophia to the Grand Duke of Moscow Vasily in 1391 was a momentous event that impinged on the course of history. Although the circumstances in which this marriage was concluded address extremely important historical issues, such as relations between Lithuania and Moscow, Vytautas’ biography, and the politics of the Grand Duchy of Moscow towards the end of the fourteenth century, historiography has not recorded many attempts to study them. This is probably due to the rather vague primary sources which are dominated by the accounts contained in the chronicles. The author of the article makes an effort to analyse them, which, combined with other evidence, as well as a review of the political situation at the time, led him to believe that it was the Moscow side that initiated the talks on the marriage of Sophia and Vasily. The Grand Duke of Moscow, Dmitry of the Don, had been looking for the possibility of a dynastic rapprochement with the ruling circles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania for a long time. The conclusion of the Polish-Lithuanian agreement in Krevo (1385), uncertain situation in the Golden Horde and the desire to strengthen the position of his son were the reasons that could force the Moscow ruler to act more decisively in this field. Therefore, having left Tartar captivity at the end of 1385, Vasily son of Dmitri of the Don, went west, where he took the opportunity of meeting Vytautas to start first talks. The negotiations were interrupted due to a rather weak political position of Vytautas before 1389. They were resumed when it turned out that Władysław Jagiełło, after taking the throne in Kraków, did not intend to forgo his active policy in Eastern Europe. Therefore, when Vytautas fought together with the Teutonic Knights to seize power in Lithuania, Moscow decided to support his efforts. In this way, the duke, with his allies in the Teutonic Order and strong ties with Moscow, became a dangerous rival for Władysław Jagiełło. Such a turn of events could have influenced the Polish king’s decision to reconcile with his cousin yet again.

This chapter examines the large-scale non-state violence on the trade routes in the buffer zone between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Grand Duchy of Moscow, the Ottoman Empire, and the Crimean Khanate. Though the rulers constantly declared their will to maintain the diplomatic contacts and protect the caravan trade between these states, execution of their orders was entrusted to those who actually committed the violent attacks – the Cossacks and the local dignitaries. The violence on the steppe roads was not haphazard but well-coordinated. It was encouraged or, at least, tolerated by the local dignitaries who benefited from it and who provided the brigands with the necessary patronage. To avoid an open war with a powerful neighbouring state, these dignitaries sometimes detained and executed some perpetrators but never tackled the underlying causes of the brigandage (qazaqliq). Even the occasional imprisonment of the dignitaries themselves failed to stop brigandage since its preconditions remained in place: the frontiers were not fixed and guarded, the roads were not patrolled, the officials and servicemen were not paid or underpaid, and the rulers lacked tools to curb raiding and instead continued this hybrid war, simply shifting responsibility onto the so-called ‘nameless’ or ‘master-less men’.

The article explores the discursive questions connected with the preparation and conclusion of the Ukrainian-Polish treaty of Hadiach in 1658. In particular, the content of the agreement and factors that led to the fact that the idea of the Hadiach treaty (realignment of the Commonwealth into a state of three nationalities) remained unrealised are analysed. The attention was paid to the fact that Polish-Ukrainian negotiations and the conclusion of the agreement in the set near Hadiach in 1658 were conditioned by a number of factors relating to the current Ukrainian-Polish, Ukrainian-Moscow and Polish-Moscow relations. The prime factor that made the Hetman’s government of Ivan Vyhovsky negotiate with the authorities of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was the fact that it looked for a medium of reconciliation and further state development of Ukraine because there was a growing threat from Moscow. In Warsaw, in return, having made the most from the dire situation of Ukraine, the authorities longed for solving the "Ukrainian question" by the peaceful return of the lost Ukrainian territories in 1648. They also hoped that in the context of successful development of negotiations with Chigirin, it would be possible to get an advantage over Moscow in the long-running confrontation over dominance in CEE. The content of the treaty of Hadiach that was worked out during the long negotiations mirrored the trend when the Ukrainian part, which was more interested and acted with a weak diplomatic hand, had to agree to the terms dictated by Warsaw. Although, in general, the position of Ukraine in the reformed Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth should have resembled the position of Lithuania, Chigirin was forced to accept territorial restrictions, Warsaw's refusal to liquidate the church union, and so on. The author concluded that the prime factor, which eventually led to the collapse of the idea of Hadiach, was the reluctance of the Polish political elite to recognise equal rights for Ukraine and the Cossacks, and the fact that Warsaw sleepwalked when Moscow troops invaded Ukraine and Hetman Vyhovsky desperately needed the promised help.

The paper presents a missive from the Grand Duke of Moscow Ivan III declaring war to the Grand Duke of Lithuania Aleksander Jagiellończyk on June the 24th, 1500. The missive, so far unaccounted in scientific publications, survives in a Middle Low German translation kept in the archive of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck. The declaration of war is motivated by alleged injustices done to Ivan III, to his subjects and to his daughter Elena Ivanovna, who was Aleksander’s wife. Judging by the particular dialect of Low German, the translation was made in Lübeck. Its literality allows conclusions about the content of the original missive and the sources on which it was based. Analysis shows that the arguments included complaints formulated by Muscovite diplomats after the conclusion of the ‘eternal peace’ of 1494, beginning with the negotiations in 1495. Compared to indirect and short textual evidence available so far, this document gives a fuller picture of the events, including a more precise date of the beginning of the Muscovite-Lithuanian War of 1500–1503: brought together, all sources show that the declaration was made by Ivan III with considerable delay, months after warfare had begun. The document also demonstrates how the 15th-century Russian state used official documentation in its foreign policy and which role the emerging bureaucratic class played in it. The published document is accompanied by a Russian translation.

The issues of everyday life in the military camp in the first part of early modern period wasn’t, as long as that (instead of few exceptions), the main theme of individual study. Discussing of this problem according to Stephan Bathory’s campaign in Livonia, especially the last one (Psków – 1581) is particularly interesting. The reason of that situation is fact, that we can use not only political documentary and well-preserved history sources relevant to militaries and public treasury, but also a diary of Jan Piotrowski, participant of those episodes. In many comprehensive letters he informed about the course of the military actions, but also about the moods and spirits of the soldiers. Many times he wrote about conditions of the soldiers’ everyday life in the camp (during march-pastes and siege), ways and circumstances of gaining the food, conditions of living in the military camp, sanitary and health issues too. His jottings are supplied by Łukasz Działyński and Jan Zborowski’s diaries. Problematyka życia codziennego w obozie wojskowym w epoce wczesnonowożytnej nie była, jak dotąd (poza nielicznymi wyjątkami), przedmiotem osobnego studium. Szczególnie interesujące wydaje się skupienie na tej kwestii w odniesieniu do wypraw inflanckich Stefana I Batorego, zwłaszcza ostatniej z nich (Psków – 1581 r.). Prócz oficjalnej dokumentacji o charakterze politycznych oraz stosunkowo nieźle zachowanych źródeł natury wojskowo-skarbowej, dysponujemy bowiem dziennikiem Jana Piotrowskiego, uczestnika tych wydarzeń. W formie obszernych listów informował on o przebiegu działań zbrojnych, ale również o nastrojach wśród żołnierzy. Niejednokrotnie pisał także o warunkach codziennego bytowania wojska w obozie (w marszu i podczas oblężeń), sposobach i okolicznościach zdobywania żywności, warunkach pomieszkiwania w obozie wojskowym, kwestiach sanitarnych i zdrowotnych. Jego zapiski doskonale uzupełniają diariusze Łukasza Działyńskiego i Jana Zborowskiego.

The article is devoted to the evolution of the image of the Moscow principality, and then the state in the works of Polish chroniclers of the XV—XVI centuries Jan Dlugosh and Matvey Mekhovsky. Attention is paid to the characteristics of Moscow, and how these characteristics changed as it strengthened. Particular attention is paid to the assessments of J. Dlugosh and M. Mekhovsky regarding their contemporary Moscow princes and rulers of Poland and Lithuania, as well as the expansion of the territory of the Moscow principality. Respect for Moscow princes and criticism of Polish rulers are especially noted. Based on a comparative analysis of the news of J. Dlugosh and M. Mekhovsky, a growing interest in the Moscow state is shown, a geographical description of which is given by M. Mekhovsky. The work shows that the Polish chroniclers have not yet been interested in the internal political history of Moscow — all references were exclusively related to Polish or Lithuanian events. The relevance of the study is due to the role played by Polish historiography of the XV—XVI centuries in shaping the image of the Moscow state, Russia in Europe, in particular, M. Mekhovsky’s Treatise on the Two Sarmatians.

John III Sobieski had to deal with the problem of confl icted religious denominations, i.e. the Eastern Churches: the Uniate Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church, which had been in confl ict for almost 80 years. The King's actions were dependent on various aspects of international politics. Religious matters were an important part of shaping relations with Russia and the Cossacks and remained within the area of interest of the Holy See. Having established peace with Russia, the King left aside the concept of establishing an autocephalous Eastern Orthodox Church in the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and adopted a strategy of expanding the union in the Eastern Orthodox Church dioceses by trying to convince individual hierarchs to this concept. For bishops the king nominated individuals who favoured the union and enjoyed trust among the Cossack community, but most of all, who were experienced offi cials and soldiers holding high esteem among local nobleman elites. The policy-making of John III Sobieski contributed to expanding the Catholic Kiev Metropolis of the Eastern Rite (united with Rome) over the Przemyśl, Lutsk and Lviv bishoprics. The aim of Sobieski's policies related to religious denominations was to lead to a change in religious attitudes by way of people identifying themselves with the state's interests.

The article explains the reasons for the disappearance of the interest of the nobility of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the solution of the "Ukrainian problem" in the Commonwealth, which was observed during the second half of 1655, and, accordingly, their domestic and foreign policy orientations. It is determined that after the attack of the Polish Commonwealth on 1655 in the summer of 1655, and in a state of war with the Moscow state, several groups emerged in the midst of the ruling elite of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: the Swedish, the pro-Moscow and the pro-Polish. Instead, there is no evidence that clearly demonstrates the existence of a pro-Ukrainian group. It remains unclear what position the supporters of other vectors of Lithuania’s foreign policy have taken regarding Cossack Ukraine, which included the political elite of the principality – J. Radziwill, P. Sapiga, V. Honsiewski, and other officials. It was found that in the conditions of attack of Russian and Swedish troops among the Lithuanian nobility there was a sharp loss of interest in solving the "Ukrainian problem". Much more important was the problem of saving the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and asserting certain representatives of power circles or groups of noble families of their own pragmatic interests. Moreover, the search for the best ways and means of their realization was connected mainly with two foreign policy vectors: Swedish and Russian. Some influential in the principality of the families saw the salvation of their position in support of King Jan Casimir and the preservation of the unity of the Commonwealth. Under such conditions, the actual "Ukrainian problem" in the summer – in the autumn of 1655 disappeared from view of the Lithuanian nobility.

The battle of Orscha led up not only to clash of the Polish-Lithuanian’s united forces with the army of the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, but also to confrontation of two diffirent fighting styles. Presence of Polish-Lithuanian’s infantry and artillery had made their enemy use appropriate battle order, which made resorting to wide terrain manoeuvre, changing the place of ghatering of the main forces or jumping away to reorganisation the army impossible.The first aspect of united forces’ formation, connected with their support on the bend of the Dnieper in the area of villages Paszyno–Ruklino–Pugajłowo, made possible only defence in chosen area or attack.From between many manoeuvre carried out by united forces during the battle, this one with participation of Polish mercenary cavarly at the right-flank of the Polish-Lithuanian’s army especially draw attention to oneself. Also infantry and artillery, hidden on the south-west edge of battlefield in an alder grove overgrowning the bank of the Dnieper, acted out relevant role. The main issue of this study is clash with the Moscow regiment of the left hand. Moreover I would like to address the problem of possible similarity between this manoeuvre and earlier experience of cooperating cavalry, artillery and infantry.

In the article the author does the attempt of reconstruction of the structure and contents of the Smolensk princely treaties of the fourteenth century, given the political events in Eastern Europe in the specified period. The fourteenth century is a time when a relatively untroubled existence of the Grand Duchy of Smolensk came to an end. The active foreign policy throughout the period of the Great Duchy of Lithuania and Grand Duchy of Moscow, no less interested in the new territorial acquisitions, eventually led to the elimination of the independence of the Smolensk land. The analysis of foreign policy documents of the era allows us to trace certain historical stages associated with the loss of independence of the Grand Duchy of Smolensk.

During the so-called "Deluge", namely from 1656 to 1658, there began a rivalry between Muscovy and Sweden for the control over the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Joining Inflanty and Riga was one of the main goals of the Moscow state. In August 1656 Moscow managed to seize Dyneburg (present-day Daugavpils), an important fortress on the Daugava River. However, Aleksey Mikhailovich’s priority was to regain the Ukraine and keep under control eastern provinces of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth occupied in 1655 (that is Smolensk and Chernihiv Voivodeships) rather than to continue his military actions in northern theatre of war. Despite the A. Ordin-Naschokin’s opinion, who preferred to continue military actions against Sweden in order to conquer Livonia together with Riga, the Tsar gave up on it, because of his military strength did not allow him to carry on his military operations since 1654. The outcomes of this choice will remain firm and solid and as a result of Andrusovo Treaty Moscow will decide to give back Dyneburg stronghold in return for strategically important fortresses in Smolensk and Kyiv as well as the provinces taken during the first years of the war with the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Straipsnyje analizuojami tarp Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės ir Maskvos valstybės egzistavusios diplomatinio ceremonialo normos ir formos, užtikrinusios ir palaikiusios šių nuolat konfliktuojančių šalių tarpvalstybinius santykius. Dėmesys telkiamas į juose atsiskleidžiančią mediacinę funkciją, kuri įžvelgiama įvairiuose formalaus bendravimo lygmenyse – monarcho reprezentacijos ir hierarchinio bendravimo nuostatose, iškilmingų priėmimų ir sutikimų ceremonijose, lydėjusiose kiekvieną kontaktų etapą. Pasirinktame Lietuvos ir Maskvos diplomatinių santykių etape ieškoma ne tarpvalstybinio konfliktiškumo pobūdį ir mastą atskleidžiančių situacijų, o tarpininkavimo funkciją paliudijančių atvejų. Diplomatinis ceremonialas visų pirma sukurdavo diplomatinių ryšių tvarką – abipusiškai pripažįstamus diplomatinės komunikacijos dalyvių vaidmenis per formalųjį bendravimą, taip užtikrindamas komunikacinį veiksmingumą. Tokiu būdu valdovas bendraudamas su kito suvereno reprezentantais išlaikydavo jo statusui reikiamas pozicijas, o pasiuntinybės nariai – deramai atstovaudavo savam monarchui. Antra – susilpino konfliktiškumo būsenas, dažniausiai formaliai maskavo tarp dviejų pusių esančius nesutarimus ar suteikė galimybių kitoms kontaktų formoms. Galiausiai padėjo peržengti tarp abiejų šalių ir jų visuomenių egzistuojančias politinio bei socialinio svetimumo ribas ir sankcionavo tarpvalstybinio sambūvio permainas. This article analyzes the norms and forms of the diplomatic ceremonial that secured and maintained the interstate relations existing between the continuously quarreling Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Muscovy. Attention is paid particularly to the ceremonial‘s mediating function found at various levels of formal interaction – governing the monarch‘s representation and hierarchical communication, ceremonies of festive receptions and meetings accompanying every phase of contact. Thus in the chosen time-frame of Lithuanian and Muscovite diplomatic relations we were looking not for situations revealing the nature and extent of interstate conflicts but for cases exhibiting the mediational function. The diplomatic ceremonial performed the mediating function for differences between the states by first of all creating an order for diplomatic relations in the form of mutually recognized roles for the participants in diplomatic communication through formal interaction, thus ensuring communicational efficacy. This helped the ruler to preserve the positions appropriate to his status in communicating with the representatives of another sovereign, while also helping the latter properly to represent their own monarch. Secondly, the ceremonial softened states of conflict, most often by formally masking existing differences between the two sides or providing opportunities for other forms of contact. Finally, it helped overcome limits of political and social otherness existing between both states and their societies and sanctioned changes in forms of interstate coexistence.

Kaimynystėje gyvenančių lietuvių, lenkų ir rusų tautų santykiai buvo, yra ir ateityje bus labai svarbūs. Svarba neapsiriboja istorine tiktai šių tautų raida. Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės, Lenkijos karalystės ir Maskvos valstybės santykiai visada veikė Europos tautų gyvenimą. XVI a. susikūrus Abiejų Tautų Respublikai ir susiformavus Maskvos carystei, šių valstybių santykius veikė tikybos faktorius. Šio faktoriaus vieta tarpvalstybiniuose santykiuose nušviečiama šiame straipsnyje, pateikiant lietuvių, lenkų ir rusų autorių koncepcijas ir naudojantis „Imperatoriškosios rusų istorinės draugijos rinkiniu“. The relations between the Great Dukedom of Lithuania, the Kingdom of Poland and the State of Moscow (later called the Both Nations' Republic and the Empire of Russia) were always complicated because of the claims to the territories of the Eastern Slavs and the differences in confession. Although the disputes resulted in a union of churches in 1596, the rise of the United Church did not soften the relationship. After the rise and strengthening of the Russian empire in the 18th century the issue of confession was used as a means of continual interfering into the affairs of the Both Nations' Republic until it was eventually destroyed. This important process drew reaserchers' attention already in the 19th century. The postile operations towards the Both Nations' Republic were sought to render as a sincere support of the Orthodox and Protestants by the Russian historians. However, contemporary historians highlight the real reason for such politics.

Straipsnis skirtas Sibiro „litvinų“ istorijai XVI a. pabaigoje–XVIII a. pradžioje. Sąvoka Sibiro „Lie¬tuva“ atsirado Vėlyvaisiais viduramžiais ir reiškė iš pradžių Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės, o vėliau Abiejų Tautų Respublikos valdinius. „Litvinai“ dalyvavo Rusijai politiškai ir ekonomiškai įsisavinant Sibirą bei Tolimuosius Rytus. Jie įnešė esminį indėlį, formuojant ypatingą „Tobolsko kultūros tipą“ (jis buvo būdingas ir kitiems Vakarų Sibiro miestams), jungusį Europos ir Azijos tradicijas. Sibiro „litvinų“ luominė asimiliacija baigėsi 1725 m., kai oficialiai buvo panaikintas „lietuvių sąrašas“ ir įvestas tarnybinės kariuomenės etatų sąrašas. Article is devoted to history Siberian "litvins" the end of XVI-the beginning of the XVIII centuries. The concept "Lithuania" appeared in the Late Middle Ages, designating at first citizens of Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and then the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Litvins took part in political and economic development of Siberia and the Far East. They made an essential contribution to formation special "the Tobolsk type of culture" (characteristic and for other cities of Western Siberia), uniting the European and Asian traditions. Class assimilation Siberian litvins came to the end in 1725 when "the Lithuanian list" was officially abolished and the staff list of "sluzhily" army is entered.

Analizuojant Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštytės raštiją, straipsnyje bandoma įrodyti, kad kanceliarinė Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės kalba ir vadinamoji „prosta mova“ buvo ne tik lenkų – rusų kalbų XV – XVII a. lingvistinių kontaktų tarpininkė, bet ir leksinių skolinių šaltinis. Konstatuojama, kad tarpvalstybinių to meto kontaktų dėka vyko ne tik vienakryptė vienos kalbos įtaka kitai, bet ir kontaktuojančių kalbų tarpusavio sąveika, kuri pasireiškė tuo stipriau, kuo kontaktuojančių kalbų giminystė buvo artimesnė. Straipsnyje pateikiama daugybė konkrečių leksemų ir parodomi jų perėjimo į kitas kalbas galimi keliai. Pabrėžiama, kad visos aptartos leksemos yra vidiniai slavų kalbų derivatai, o tai dar kartą įrodo teiginį apie slavų kalbinių kontaktų XV – XVII a. intensyvumo augimą. Kai kurie XVI – XVII a. slavų kanceliarinės kalbos žodžiai yra leksiniai skoliniai iš kanceliarinės Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės kalbos ir/ arba iš vadinamosios „prostos movos“. Teigiama, kad dalis skolinių į XV – XVI a. lenkų kanceliarinę kalbą taip pat atėjo iš to paties šaltinio. Šie duomenys, autorės nuomone, leidžia kalbėti apie tai, kad lenkų – rytų slavų kalbiniuose XV – XVII a. kontaktuose Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės kanceliarinė kalba buvo ne tik aktyvi tarpininkė, bet ir kontaktavusių kalbų donorė. Paanalizavusi aptartų leksemų tolesnį likimą, autorė konstatuoja, kad didelė jų dalis išnyko XVIII – XIX a. , rusų ir baltarusių kalbose iki šiol išliko po vieną leksemą, o dabartinėje lenkų kalboje nebėra nė vienos aptartos leksemos. The article examines the history of the following words found in Russian chancery language (diplomatic correspondence) of Muscovite Russia of the first half of the 17th century: voloka 'lot and land measure (about 16,8–21 hectare) in the Great Duchy of Lithuania and in the West part of Muscovite Russia', vypustoљyti 'devastate', vyrazumeti 'understand, comprehend; clear up, get to know', naruљyvati 'break' and naruљytisia 'be/get broken'. The author aims at proving that these intraslavonic derivates are interslavonic lexical loan-words from the written languages of the Great Duchy of Lithuania in the other Slavonic languages: Polish (wypustoszyć, wyrozumieć, naruszyć się) and Russian (voloka, vypustošyti, vyrazumeti, narušyvati, narušytisia) and retraces further fate of these words in all contacting languages.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiama, kokį poveikį įvairioms Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės raštijos ir apskritai kultūros sritims, taip pat kultūrinio gyvenimo kontekstui turėjo 1514 m. LDK kariuomenės pergalė prieš Maskvos kariuomenę prie Oršos. Informuoti apie pergalę ir ją išgarsinti buvo pasitelkta gausi korespondencija, triumfo renginiai, buvo sukurta nemažai eiliuotų proginių kūrinių, išspausdintų ne tik Krokuvoje, bet ir Bazelyje, Romoje ir plačiai paplitusių. Informacija apie įvykį pateko į vokiškus vienkartinius naujienų leidinius. Šios pergalės pasekmės buvo 1515 m. suvažiavimas Vienoje ir, netiesiogiai, – net šv. Kazimiero, tikro valdovo Žygimanto brolio, kanonizacijos bylos pradžia. Galima teigti, kad pergalė paskatino svarbaus vėlesnio literatūrinio veikalo – Jono Visliciečio poemos Bellum Prutenum (1516) atsiradimą. Daugelis šių raštų ir renginių skleidė garsą apie Lietuvą, jos valdovus, sostinę Vilnių.Tokios propagandos ir kultūrinės sklaidos formos puikiai atitiko Žygimanto Senojo ir Jogailaičių dinastijos politinius interesus regione ir Europoje (visų pirma santykiuose su Habsburgais), o kartu žymėjo įsitvirtinančią Lietuvoje kultūrinę Renesanso epochą. The article gives an overview of the influence that the 1514 victory of the GDL army at Orsha had on various fields of GDL literature and culture in general. The victory was made widely known through copious correspondence and triumphal celebrations. It was lauded in numerous occasional poems and other writings, which were printed not only in Cracow, but as far as in Basel and Rome, and gained a wide popularity. Information about the victory also reached German one-time publications news. Among the consequences of the victory were such important events as the 1515 Congress of Vienna, and indirectly, the beginning of the canonisation case of St. Casimir in 1517 in Rome. The victory can be said to have prompted the appearance of an important poetic work of a later period by Joannes Vislicensis Bellum Prutenum (1516). A majority of these writings and celebrations made Lithuania, its rulers and the capital, Vilnius much better known abroad. Such forms of propaganda and culture dissemination not only were in perfect accord with the political interests of Sigismund the Old and the Jagiellonian dynasty in the region and in Europe (first of all, in their relations with the Habsburgs), but also signified the advent of Renaissance to Lithuania.

Straipsnyje analizuojama Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės XV–XVI a. rytinių sienų klostimosi istorija. Sebežo, Polocko ir Vitebsko atvejai valstybės sienos geografijoje išskiriami kaip pavyzdžiai, leidžiantys teigti, jog vyraujančią ne linijinės LDK rytų sienos su Maskvos valstybe sampratą galima praplėsti ir išskirti naujus teritorijos suvokimo bei sienų specifikos aspektus. Remiantis šaltiniais darytina prielaida, jog straipsnyje analizuojami atvejai leidžia atpažinti tam tikrus linijinės sienos formavimosi požymius valstybės rytinėje erdvėje, tačiau šių požymių suradimas lokalizacijos ir chronologijos požiūriu vis dėlto byloja tik lokalų jų pobūdį The author of the article investigates the history of the establishment of the eastern state borders of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) in the 15th – l6th centuries with the exception of Sebezh, Polotsk and Vitebsk cases in the geography of the delineation of state borders. These cases serve as examples which allow claiming that the prevailing non-linear conception of the eastern borderline between the GDL and the Moscow state could be broadened; consequently, new aspects of territorial conception and borderline specifics could be demonstrated. O n the basis of the sources, a precondition is made that the cases analyzed in the article permit to recognize some features of linear borderline delineation in the state's eastern territory; however, in view of localization and chronology, recognition of these testifies to their local character

Atlikto tyrimo objektas – reikšmės arba semantiniai skoliniai (kalkės) iš lenkų kalbos, aptinkami vienoje iš Maskvos valstybės XVI amžiaus pabaigos – XVII amžiaus pirmosios pusės rusų kanceliarinių raštų atmainų – pasiuntinybių prikazų diplomatiniame susirašinėjime. Tyrimo šaltiniai – diplomatiniai dokumentai, kuriuose atsispindi Maskvos valstybės santykiai su Vakarų Europos valstybėmis. Tyrimas parodė, kad nurodytu laikotarpiu lenkų kalbos įtaka stiprėja ne tiktai kiekybiniu, bet ir kokybiniu požiūriu, vyksta ne tik rusų literatūrinės kalbos žodžių atsargų pildymas, bet ir jos leksikos turtinimas semantiniu lygmeniu. Taigi tyrimo metu buvo išanalizuotos 296 leksemos, kurios, tyrėjos nuomone, laikytinos semantiniais polonizmais. Nustatyta 218 reikšmių, kurių, mūsų manymu, o 78 ir kitų šaltinių patvirtinimu, tiriamos reikšmės yra semantinės lenkų kalbos reikšmės kalkės. Be to, nustatytos 173 reikšmės, laikytinos semantinėmis kalkėmis, kurios anksčiau nebuvo identifikuotos. Patikslinta, kaip seniai rusų raštijoje galėjo atsirasti 82 šios grupės reikšmės skoliniai, o nagrinėtos 43 leksemų reikšmės iš viso pirmą kartą užfiksuotos rusų rašytinėje kalboje. Nustatyta, kad 52 iš 66 verifikuotų potencialių semantinių skolinių laikytini kalkėmis. Patikslinta apatinė chronologinė 34 iš jų nagrinėtos reikšmės riba. Kadangi iš lenkų kalbos buvo pasiskolinta po dvi 22 leksemų reikšmes, o vienos – trys, iš viso tyrimo metu buvo nustatyta 319 semantinių kalkių iš lenkų kalbos atvejų. The article is devoted to the issue of the Polish influence on the Russian chancery (prikaznyj) language, which was of particular importance for the formation process of a new type of literary Russian. Using diplomatic correspondence from the era of Muscovite Russia as the source of study, the author provides generalized data on the intensity and profundity of the Polish influence on the lexical-semantic system of Russian as expressed through active mediation of the "prostaja mova". However, the mova's function was much broader. As a result, the author emphasizes its importance in the creation of the prerequisites necessary for change in the language of seventeenth-century Muscovite Russia.

Ši tyrimo dalis skirta įvairių LDK ir Maskvos valstybės diplomatinio bendravimo praktikoje pasitaikiusių ceremonialinio elgesio atvejų nagrinėjimui. Struktūriškai išskaidant bendrąjį diplomatinio ceremonialo modelį, aptariamos įvairių jo etapų funkcijos, vertinama tarpvalstybinio bendravimo normų įtaka ceremonijų formai, galimos jų genetinės sąsajos su senosiomis apeigomis. Ceremonialinės procedūros LDK ir Maskvos diplomatinėje praktikoje lydėdavo ne tik teritorijos ar erdvės pasikeitimą. Jos svarbios ir socialinių ribų, kurias palaikydavo hierarchinis santykių principas, peržengime. Tarpvaldovinėje diplomatijoje ceremonijos ir ritualai sušvelnindavo ribų, skiriančių nelygių rangų asmenis, perėjimą. Valdovui bendraujant su kito suvereno reprezentantais, padėdavo palaikyti jam pritinkantį statusą, saugoti garbę, tuo tarpu pasiuntiniui – deramai atstovauti savąjį monarchą, būti jo „balsu ir veidu“. Diplomatijos tyrinėtojas R. Cohenas, savaip interpretuodamas R. Numelino teiginius, tvirtina, kad diplomatines derybas galima apibūdinti kaip tam tikrą ritualinio perėjimo rūšį, analogišką jau minėtam bendruomenės nario perėjimui iš vieno statuso į kitą. Diplomatijoje tai būtų santykių pobūdžio ar tarpvalstybinio būvio pasikeitimas. Nors šią idėją vargu ar galima būtų tiesiogiai pritaikyti tuometinei diplomatijai, savąją nišą ji galėtų surasti tarpvalstybinių sutarčių sudarymo ir tvirtinimo etape. Ratifikacijos procedūros žymėdavo diplomatinių kontaktų ciklo pabaigą bei perėjimą į naują tarpvalstybinių santykių būvį. This part of the research is dedicated to the analysis of cases of ceremonial behaviour in the practice of various diplomatic relations of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the State of Moscow. In structurally dividing the general model of the diplomatic ceremonial, the functions of its various stages are discussed, the influence of the norms of international communication of the form of ceremonies and their possible links with old rituals are evaluated. Ceremonials in the diplomatic practice of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Moscow accompanied territorial and special changes. They were also important in crossing social borders based on the hierarchical principles of relations. In the then diplomacy, ceremonials and rituals mitigated the crossing of borders between persons of various ranks. They helped the ruler to maintain his status and honour while communicating with representatives of another ruler, whereas, the envoy could represent his monarch in a proper manner, i.e. to be his “voice and face”. The researcher of the diplomacy R. Cohen claims that diplomatic negotiations can be defined as a certain type of ritual transition analogous to the mentioned above transition of a community member from one status to another. In diplomacy, it the transformation of the nature of relations or inter-state status. Although, this idea could be hardly applied in the then diplomacy, it could find its niche in the stage of inter-state agreement conclusion and approval. Procedures of ratification marked the end of the cycle of diplomatic contacts and a transition to a new status of inter-state relations.

Straipsnyje rašoma, kad tyrimui buvo pasirinktas Lietuvos ir Maskvos santykių periodas, kuris atspindi keletą svarbių problematikos aspektų. Vykstančios permainos regiono rytinėse erdvėse keitė iki tol buvusį jėgų išsidėstymą ir naują geopolitinę situaciją. Ryškėjo Maskvos siekimas pakeisti esamą padėtį ir sutvirtinti savo pozicijas kitų regiono šalių sąskaita. Tada LDK turėjo atlaikyti karinį ir politinį spaudimą. Atkreipiamas dėmesys, kad valstybių konkurencija sąlygojo diplomatijai keliamų uždavinių pobūdį. To meto diplomatinės veiklos normos priklausė nuo politinių idėjų turinio. Svarbu apibrėžti teorines nuostatas ir diplomatijos terminą. Pažymima, kad diplomatija – žodis, turintis daugybę reikšmių, susijusių su oficialiomis bendravimo formomis, o viena svarbiausių diplomatijos funkcijų – komunikacijos ir informacijos tarp valstybių užtikrinimas. Tiriamojo laikotarpio diplomatiją Lietuvos ir Maskvos santykių praktikoje galima apibrėžti kaip priemonę ryšiams tarp valdovų palaikyti. Taip pat parodoma diplomatinių santykių hierarchija. Akcentuojamas vienas tyrimo objektų bruožas – ceremonialinio elgesio bei jį reglamentuojančių normų bendrumas diplomatinių santykių dalyviams. Nurodoma, kad daugelį to meto diplomatijos ypatybių nulėmė tarp valstybės, valdovo ir jo diplomatinio reprezentanto egzistuojantis ypatingas santykis. Aptariamas neliečiamumo principas, jo laikymasis ir pažeidimas diplomatinėje veikloje, manipuliavimas tarpvalstybinio bendravimo normų nuostatomis. Pripažįstama, jog toks bendravimas sudarė bendruosius tarpusavio kontaktų principus. The paper writes that the research discusses the period of Lithuanian-Moscow relations reflecting several important aspects of the problems. Changes in the eastern part of the region altered the prevailing distribution of powers and a new geopolitical situation. Moscow’s objective to change the current situation and consolidate its position at the expense of other countries of the region is observed. At that time the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) has to withstand a military and political pressure. The competition of states determined the nature of objectives set for diplomacy. The then norms of diplomatic activity depended on the content of political ideas. It is important to define theoretical attitudes and the term of diplomacy. Diplomacy is a word with many meanings related to official forms of communication; one of the most important functions of diplomacy is assurance of communication and information between states. Diplomacy in the practice of the relations between Lithuania and Moscow in the given period could be defined as the means to maintain contacts between sovereigns. The hierarchy of diplomatic relations is also demonstrated. One feature of research objects is highlighted – the ceremonial conduct and regulatory norms are common to the participants of diplomatic relations. Many characteristics of the then diplomacy were determined by the special relationship existing between the state, sovereign and his diplomatic representative. The principle of immunity, its compliance and breach in diplomatic activity as well as manipulation of interstate communication norms are discussed. The author admits that such communication resulted in common principles of mutual contacts.

Kulikovo mūšį nušviečiantys šaltiniai, rašyti XIV a. pab.–XVI a., leidžia atskleisti LDK karo vadų ir karių vaidmenį mūšyje. Jogaila derėjosi su Aukso ordos valdovu Mamajum, bet mūšyje jam ginklu padėti nesiveržė. Rusios paribiuose Mamajus Jogailos kariuomenės nesulaukė, todėl Rusios pajėgos galėjo mobilizuotis ir pasirengti kovai. Į Dmitrijaus Maskviškio telkiamą kariuomenę įsitraukusios LDK kunigaikščių Algirdaičių Andriaus ir Dmitrijaus karinės pajėgos buvo didelė parama Dmitrijui pirmiausia dėl karo vadų pritaikytos vertingos kovinės patirties. Algirdaičių kariaunose buvo slavų ir lietuvių ponų, bajorų ir eilinių karių. Kulikovo kampanijoje ir pačiame mūšyje lietuvių karo vadų Andriaus ir Dmitrijaus Algirdaičių bei Dmitrijaus Volyniečio Karijotaičio vaidmuo buvo labai svarbus. Ketvirtas vadas – Glėbas, galbūt Dmitrijaus Algridaičio sūnus, LDK kunigaikštis. Algirdaičiai ir jų kariai mūšio pradžioje kovėsi priešakiniame, vėliau dešiniajame pulke, sėkmingai atrėmusiame totorių puolimą, čia pagrindinis vadas buvo Andrius Algirdaitis, suteikęs didelę pagalbą centriniam didžiajam pulkui. Jis kovojo ir vadovavo didžiojo pulko rezervui, neleidusiam prasiveržusiems totoriams iš užnugario apeiti didįjį pulką. Centrinio didžiojo pulko gynyboje pasižymėjo LDK kunigaikštis Glėbas. Pasalos pulkui vadovavo Dmitrijus Volynietis Karijotaitis. Jo tinkamai pasirinktas laikas smūgiui į prasiveržusių totorių sparną lėmė Mamajaus Aukso ordos pajėgų sutriuškinimą. Mūšio metu sužeistas didysis Maskvos kunigaikštis Dmitrijus buvo priverstas pasitraukti iš kovos. Faktiškieji mūšio vadai – LDK kunigaikščiai Andrius ir Dmitrijus Algirdaičiai bei Dmitrijus Volynietis Karijotaitis. Savo indėlį įnešė ir žemesnieji LDK vadai bei kariai. Mūšyje žuvo „30 Lietuvos ponų" ir daug jų kariaunų karių. The sources on the Battle of Kulikovo, written at the end of the 14th c. – in the 16th c., allow revealing the role of chieftains and servicemen of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) in the battle. Jogaila negotiated with Mamai, the leader of the Golden Horde, but he did not hasten to help him in the battle. The armed forces of GDL Dukes Algirdaitis, Andrius and Dmitrijus, which were involved in the army rallied by Dmitrijus Maskviškis, were a considerable support for Dmitrijus, primarily due to valuable military experience of chieftains. The Algirdaitis soldieries consisted of Slav and Lithuanian lords, noblemen and ordinary servicemen. Andrius and Dmitrijus Algirdaitis and Dmitrijus Volynietis Karijotaitis played a very significant role in the Battle of Kulikovo. GDL Duke Glėbas, possibly the son of Dmitrijus Algirdaitis, was the fourth chieftain. Initially, the Algirdaitis and their soldiers fought at the spearhead and later in the right regiment, which successfully withstood the Tartar attack. Here the leading chieftain was Andrius, who fought and commanded the reserve of the major regiment which did not allow the Tartars to outflank it from the reverse. Glėbas distinguished himself in the defence of the central major regiment. Dmitrijus Volynietis Karijotaitis commanded the roadblock regiment. His suitably chosen time for attacking the Tartars led to the defeat of Mamai’s Golden Horde army. Grand Duke of Moscow Dmitrijus was injured at the battle and had to retreat. Factual commanders of the battle were GDL Dukes Andrius and Dmitrijus Algirdaitis and Dmitrijus Volynietis Karijotaitis. Lower in rank GDL chieftains and soldiers also made their contribution. “30 Lithuanian lords” and many servicemen of their soldieries were killed on the battlefield.

Kai 1447 m. Lenkijos karaliumi tapo didysis Lietuvos kunigaikštis Kazimieras, buvo įgyvendinta Jogailos svajonė. Jis norėjo, kad LDK ir Lenkijos karalystę valdytų vienas ir tas pats gediminaitis – jogailaitis. Kaip Mažlenkių diduomenė reagavo į Kazimiero išrinkimą lenkų karaliumi, puikiai atsispindi Jono Dlugošo kronikoje. Toks pat požiūris yra vyraujantis XIX a. bei XX a. lenkų moksle, kada norima padidinti vienos lenkų politinės bendruomenės įtaką, o tuo pačiu sumažinti vieno lietuvių kunigaikščio svarbą. Taip istorikai ignoruoja jogailaičius, bet ir paniekina politines jėgas, kurios veikė Lenkijos karūnos žemėse. Labai išsamus to meto aprašymas yra 1897 m. publikuotas Anatolio Lewickio straipsnyje. Šio autoriaus straipsnio pagrindu iškeltą problemą tyrinėjo L. Kolankowskis ir O. Haleckis. Taip pat publikacijoje yra aptariama B. Dundulio monografijoje ,,Lietuvos kova dėl valstybinio savarankiškumo XV a. (1968 ir 1993 m.)“, bet jau lietuvių akimis, parašyta versija. Parašytos publikacijos tikslas patikrinti, ar Lewickio 1446 metų dokumentas tikrai yra tų metų ,,unijos aktas“. Nemažai istorikų laikosi nuomonės, kad yra svarbiau išsiaiškinti, ar buvo įgyvendinti šio dokumento ketinimai, o ne aiškintis, kada buvo datuotas dokumentas. Dokumento tikslinimą galima paaiškinti tuo, kad taip buvo tenkinamas XIX a. mokslo poreikis surasti teisinį aktą, kuris pagrįstų kiekvieną politinį pokytį. Analizuojant 1445–1447 m. karaliaus rinkimo bei karūnavimo įvykius, galima pastebėti lenkų, Vokiečių ordino ir Vilniaus ponijos silpnumą. Jį savo tikslams išnaudojo Kazimieras su giminaičiais. When the Great Duke of Lithuania Casimir became a King of Poland in 1447, the dream of Jogaila came true. He always wanted that the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (LDK) and the Kingdom of Poland were governed by a single representative of Gediminids-Jagiellonian dynasty. The reaction of Mazovian noblemen to Casimir’s election to the King of Poland was well reflected in Jan Dlugosz chronicle. The same attitude prevails in the polish science of the 19th-20th centuries, with a desire to increase influence of one Polish political community, and at the same time to decrease the importance of one Lithuanian Duke. This way, historians ignore Jagiellonians and also scorn political powers which were active in the lands of the Polish Crown. A very comprehensive description of the then situation is in the article of Anatolij Lewicki, published in 1897. L. Kolankowski and O. Halecki analysed a problem raised on the bases of the article of the mentioned author. This publication also discusses the Lithuanian version of B. Dundulis monograph “Lithuanian fight for state autonomy in the 15th c. (in 1968 and 1993)”. The aim of this publication is to verify whether Lewicki’s document of 1446 truly is the “union pact” of the time. Many historians believe that it is more important to figure out whether the intentions of this document were implemented rather than the exact date of the document. The specification of the document could be explained by the fact that it was the satisfaction of the need of science of the 19th c. to find legislative document to base every political change. Analysing the 1445-1447 events of election and crowning, the weakness of Poles, Teutonic Knights and Vilnius nobility could be noticed. This weakness was used by Casimir and his relatives for their purposes.
