The U.S. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has issued a policy that intends for both elementary and high school mathematics to concentrate on reasoning and sense making. The policy's applicability has been attributed to children's capacity to learn mathematics through the two activities. Suggestions on fostering reasoning and sense making among children are also given.
