The U.S. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics has issued a policy that intends for both elementary and high school mathematics to concentrate on reasoning and sense making. The policy's applicability has been attributed to children's capacity to learn mathematics through the two activities. Suggestions on fostering reasoning and sense making among children are also given.

The article describes a class activity to help students understand the concept of a sampling distribution of a sample proportion, using GOLO, a dice-based golf game.

Counterarguments are presented to contradict the reasons for recommendation of national standards in mathematics. It is suggested that such uniform standards set without allowing freedom to teachers on the curriculum would only worsen the problem of effective mathematics teaching and learning.
