Abstract

We have carried out exclusive measurements for the photoproduction of an $\eta$ meson from a proton target with an egg-shaped calorimeter made of BGO crystals (BGOegg) and forward charged-particle detectors at the SPring-8 LEPS2 beamline. The differential cross sections and photon beam asymmetries of the $\gamma p \to \eta p$ reaction are measured in a center-of-mass energy ($W$) range of $1.82$-$2.32$ GeV and a polar angle range of $-1.0 < \cos{\theta^{\eta}_{\mathrm{c.m.}}} < 0.6$. The reaction is identified by selecting a proton and two $\gamma$'s produced by an $\eta$-meson decay. The kinematic fit method was employed to select the reaction candidate with the confidence level larger than $1$\%. A bump structure at $W$ = $2.0$-$2.3$ GeV in the differential cross section is confirmed at extremely backward $\eta$ polar angles, where the existing data are inconsistent with each other. This bump structure is likely associated with high-spin resonances that couple with $s\bar{s}$ quarks. The results of the photon beam asymmetries in a wide $\eta$ polar angle range are new for the photon beam energies exceeding $2.1$ GeV. These results are not reproduced by the existing partial wave analyses. They provide an additional constraint to nucleon resonance studies at high energies., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

We have constructed a new laser-Compton-scattering facility, called the LEPS2 beamline, at the 8-GeV electron storage ring, SPring-8. This facility provides a linearly polarized photon beam in a tagged energy range of 1.3--2.4 GeV. Thanks to a small divergence of the low-emittance storage-ring electrons, the tagged photon beam has a size (sigma) suppressed to about 4 mm even after it travels about 130 m to the experimental building that is independent of the storage ring building and contains large detector systems. This beamline is designed to achieve a photon beam intensity higher than that of the first laser-Compton-scattering beamline at SPring-8 by adopting the simultaneous injection of up to four high-power laser beams and increasing a transmittance for the long photon-beam path up to about 77%. The new beamline is under operation for hadron photoproduction experiments.

Abstract

We measured missing mass spectrum of the $^{12}{\rm C}(\gamma,p)$ reaction for the first time in coincidence with potential decay products from $\eta'$ bound nuclei. We tagged an ($\eta+p$) pair associated with the $\eta'N\to\eta N$ process in a nucleus. After applying kinematical selections to reduce backgrounds, no signal events were observed in the bound-state region. An upper limit of the signal cross section in the opening angle $\cos\theta^{\eta p}_{lab}<-0.9$ was obtained to be 2.2 nb/sr at the 90$\%$ confidence level. It is compared with theoretical cross sections, whose normalization ambiguity is suppressed by measuring a quasifree $\eta'$ production rate. Our results indicate a small branching fraction of the $\eta'N\to\eta N$ process and/or a shallow $\eta'$-nucleus potential., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$ and decay asymmetries for the $\gamma p\rightarrow\phi p$ reaction have been measured using linearly polarized photons in the range 1.5 to 2.9 GeV. These cross sections were used to determine the Pomeron strength factor. The cross sections and decay asymmetries are consistently described by the $t$-channel Pomeron and pseudoscalar exchange model in the $E_{\gamma}$ region above 2.37 GeV. In the lower energy region, an excess over the model prediction is observed in the energy dependence of the differential cross sections at $t=t_{\text{min}}$. This observation suggests that additional processes or interference effects between Pomeron exchange and other processes appear near the threshold region., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

However, eculizumab-related meningococcal disease is a serious problem. Because of the difficulty diagnosing meningococcal disease, deaths from meningococcal disease may have been overlooked. The purpose of this study was to clarify the trend of meningococcal infection in patients on eculizumab and to evaluate the effectiveness of risk communication.Methods: Pharmacovigilance analysis was conducted using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database between the first quarter of 2010 and the second quarter of 2019. Of the reports of deaths, those with adverse event terms of fever, shock, altered state of consciousness, loss of consciousness, sepsis, organ failure, and disseminated intravascular coagulation were analyzed as deaths with suspected meningococcal infection.Results: Of the 3559.2 person-years of eculizumab-exposed patients, 17 patients died with symptoms of meningococcal disease (including two confirmed cases). The mortality rate of meningococcal disease in patients exposed to eculizumab in Japan was estimated to be 0.56 (confirmed cases) to 4.8 (suspected cases) per 1000 person-years. Based on data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Disease, the mortality rate of meningococcal disease in the general population in Japan is 0.0042 per 100,000 person-years. Thus, the mortality rate from meningococcal disease in eculizumab-exposed patients is estimated to be 13,000 to 114,000 times the mortality rate from meningococcal disease in the general population of Japan. Academic societies warned of deaths from meningococcal disease in the first quarter of 2018, calling for appropriate action. Thereafter, only one death with symptoms of meningococcal disease has been reported.Conclusion: The analysis of the database showed that death from meningococcal disease in eculizumab-exposed individuals may occur more often than expected. Abstract

Structural features of newly found perovskite-based iron pnictide oxide system have been systematically studied. Compared to REFePnO system, perovskite-based system tend to have lower Pn-Fe-Pn angle and higher pnictogen height owing to low electronegativity of alkaline earth metal and small repulsive force between pnictogen and oxygen atoms. As-Fe-As angles of (Fe2As2)(Sr4Cr2O6), (Fe2As2)(Sr4V2O6) and (Fe2Pn2)(Sr4MgTiO6) are close to ideal tetrahedron and those pnictogen heights of about 1.40 A are close to NdFeAsO with optimized carrier concentration. Abstract

A new layered oxypnictide (Fe2P2)(Sr4Sc2O6) have been synthesized by solid-state reaction. This material has an alternating layer stacking structure of anti-fluorite Fe2P2 and perovskite-based Sr4Sc2O6 oxide layers. Space group of the material is P4/nmm and lattice constants a and c are 4.016 A and 15.543 A, respectively. The interlayer Fe-Fe distance corresponding to the c-axis length is the longest ever reported in the iron-based oxypnictide systems. In both magnetization and resistivity measurements, the present compound exhibited superconductivity below 17 K, which is much higher than that of LaFePO and the highest in arsenic-free iron-based oxypnictide systems under ambient pressure., Comment: 6pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The Liouville approach is applied to the quantum treatment of the dilaton gravity in two dimensions. The physical states are obtained from the BRST cohomology and correlation functions are computed up to three-point functions. For the $N=0$ case (i.e., without matter), the cosmological term operator is found to have the discrete momentum that plays a special role in the $c=1$ Liouville gravity. 34. A simulation study on the effects of glacial meltwater discharge on net primary production in a Greenlandic fjord

Abstract

Terminal glaciers of the Greenland Ice Sheet are bordered by hundreds of fjords and other marine areas. At the terminus of a marine-terminating glacier, a large amount of freshwater and suspended sediment (SS) is injected into the fjord by subglacial discharge. The meltwater discharge entrains lower waters and upwells along the glacier front, thereby supplying nutrients to the upper layers of the fjord. This process can increase biological production in the surface layer during the summer melt season. To investigate the influence of subglacial discharge on the net primary production (NPP) in a glacial fjord, a numerical simulation of the Bowdoin Fjord in Greenland was performed by introducing a lower trophic level ecosystem model into a non-hydrostatic ocean model. Sensitivity experiments were also conducted to estimate the effects on NPP due to possible changes in meltwater discharge and glacier recession that may occur as a consequence of climate change. Results of the experiments showed that the NPP increases with a greater amount of glacier meltwater injected from deeper subglacial outlet. The positive influence of the discharge on NPP is not the case in a region where ample SS supplies inhibit photosynthesis. As meltwater discharge increases and the subglacial outlet becomes shallower, NPP is expected to become 1.2 times larger than that at present. Abstract

Lagrangian analysis using particle tracking system plays major roles in recent ocean modeling studies. The targets of Lagrangian analysis include water properties, dissolved or particulate elements, marine debris such as microplastics and oil droplets, suspended sediment matters, passively transported eggs, plankton, and larvae, and even actively migrating fishes. The Lagrangian particle tracking method has several advantages over Eulerian tracers such as the ability to record the history of each individual particle and the high accuracy of advection without contamination from numerical diffusion and dissipation. However, the reliability of Lagrangian analysis highly depends on the spatial resolution of the velocity field in which the particle trajectories are integrated. In the present study, we developed a high-resolution modeling system with 1/180deg resolution covering the entire Japanese archipelago and neighboring shelf regions with deploying multi-billion passive particles to trace the small-scale trajectory of water mass and dissipation/dilution mechanisms. The results enable us to assess the connectivity between remote bays and regions, which is essential for fishery/marine resource studies.
