Prior to practical deployment, it is critical to thoroughly assess sodium's mechanical properties, as to fully understand and thus help mitigate potential failure mechanisms. Lithium-ion batteries are yet to realize their full promise because of challenges in the design and construction of electrode architectures that allow for their entire interior volumes to be reversibly accessible for ion storage. Electrodes constructed from the same material and with the same specifications, which differ only in terms of dimensions and geometries of the constituent particles, can show surprising differences in polarization, stress accumulation and capacity fade. Here, using operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD), we probe the mechanistic origins of the remarkable particle geometry-dependent modification of lithiation-induced phase transformations in V2O5 as a model phase-transforming cathode. A pronounced modulation of phase coexistence regimes is observed as a function of particle geometry. Specifically, a metastable phase is stabilized for nanometre-sized spherical V2O5 particles, to circumvent the formation of large misfit strains. Spatially resolved EDXRD measurements demonstrate that particle geometries strongly modify the tortuosity of the porous cathode architecture. Greater ion-transport limitations in electrode architectures comprising micrometre-sized platelets result in considerable lithiation heterogeneities across the thickness of the electrode. These insights establish particle geometry-dependent modification of metastable phase regimes and electrode tortuosity as key design principles for realizing the promise of intercalation cathodes. Designing electrode architectures for Li-ion batteries that can be reversibly accessible for ion storage can be challenging. Using operando techniques the mechanistic origin of lithiation-induced phase transformations in a V2O5 model cathode is now clarified.

A primary mode of failure of thin-film coatings is the mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients of the substrate and the coating, which results in accumulation of interfacial stresses and ultimately in film delamination. While much attention has been devoted to modulation of interfacial bonding to mitigate delamination, current strategies are constrained in their generalizability and have had limited success in imbuing resistance to prolonged thermal cycling. We demonstrate here the incorporation of rigid thermal expansion compensators within polymeric films as a generalizable strategy for minimizing thermal mismatch with the substrate. Nanostructures of the isotropic negative thermal expansion (NTE) material HfV2O7 have been prepared based on the reaction of nanoparticulate precursors. The NTE behavior, derived from transverse oxygen displacement within the cubic structure, has been examined using temperature-variant powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and selected-area electron diffraction measurements. HfV2O7 initially crystallizes in a 3 × 3 × 3 superlattice but undergoes phase transformations to stabilize a cubic structure that exhibits strong and isotropic NTE with a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) = -6.7 × 10-6 °C-1 across an extended temperature range of 130-700 °C. Incorporation of HfV2O7 in a high-temperature thermoset polybenzimidazole enables the reduction of compressive stress by 67.3% for a relatively small loading of 26.6 vol % HfV2O7. Based on a composite model, we demonstrate that HfV2O7 can reduce the thermal expansion coefficient of polymer nanocomposite films, even at low volume fractions, as a result of its substantially higher elastic modulus compared to the continuous polymer matrix. By changing the volume fraction of HfV2O7, the overall coefficients of thermal expansion of the film can be tuned to match a range of substrates, thereby mitigating thermal stresses and resolving a fundamental challenge for high-temperature composites and nanocomposite coatings.

The need for higher energy-density rechargeable batteries has generated interest in alkali metal electrodes paired with solid electrolytes. However, metal penetration and electrolyte fracture at low current densities have emerged as fundamental barriers. Here we show that for pure metals in the Li–Na–K system, the critical current densities scale inversely to mechanical deformation resistance. Furthermore, we demonstrate two electrode architectures in which the presence of a liquid phase enables high current densities while it preserves the shape retention and packaging advantages of solid electrodes. First, biphasic Na–K alloys show K+ critical current densities (with the K-β″-Al2O3 electrolyte) that exceed 15 mA cm‒2. Second, introducing a wetting interfacial film of Na–K liquid between Li metal and Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 solid electrolyte doubles the critical current density and permits cycling at areal capacities that exceed 3.5 mAh cm‒2. These design approaches hold promise for overcoming electrochemomechanical stability issues that have heretofore limited the performance of solid-state metal batteries. A challenge with the use of metal anodes in batteries is their inability to sustain structural stability, especially at high currents. Here the authors examine electrochemomechanical properties of metal anodes and demonstrate an effective semi-solid electrode approach at practically relevant conditions.

Stem structural failure, or lodging, affects many crops including sorghum, and can cause large yield losses. Lodging is typically caused by mechanical forces associated with severe weather like high winds, but exposure to sub-catastrophic forces may strengthen stems and improve lodging resistance. The responses of sorghum internodes at different developmental stages were examined at 2 and 26h after initiating moderate mechanical stimulation with an automated apparatus. Summary Intercalation-induced phase transformations in Li-ion battery electrode materials give rise to multi-phase coexistence regimes within individual particles, generating significant lattice coherency strain across dynamically evolving interfaces. We demonstrate here that the lattice coherency strain can be alleviated by leveraging the coupling of electrochemistry, mechanics, and particle geometry to achieve controllable nucleation and deterministic ion transport. Here, we contrast singular kinks and continuous curvature as a means of enabling homogeneous lithiation without developing large stresses within a model cathode material, V2O5. The singular kink confirms that local curvature facilitates lithiation but also exacerbates lithiation inhomogeneities and elastic misfit strain. In contrast, the incorporation of continuous curvature enables homogeneous single-phase lithiation, mitigating lattice coherency strain. The studies provide a direct view of the coupling of mechanics and electrochemistry within crystalline electrodes and suggest that mesoscale architectures can help resolve key failure mechanisms limiting the performance of energy-storage systems without sacrificing charge/discharge kinetics.

Inconel alloy 718 is a high-strength and corrosion resistant alloy that is commonly used as a beamline vacuum window. The accumulation of irradiation-induced damage substantially decreases the window’s service lifetime, and replacing it engenders significant beamline downtime. With this application in mind, herein we examine whether post-irradiation annealing can alleviate irradiation-induced damage of Inconel alloy 718. Inconel alloy 718 was received in a solution annealed state. We then irradiated samples using two different modalities (1.5 MeV H+ and 5 MeV Ni2+) at three representative temperatures for beamline windows (room temperature, 100 °C, and 200 °C), followed by annealing at temperatures viable for in-situ annealing processes (no anneal, 300 °C, and 500 °C). Using nanoindentation, we determined that irradiation-induced hardening occurs but is largely mitigated by post-irradiation annealing. Overall, our results suggest that in-situ annealing of radiation damage in Inconel alloy 718 vacuum windows appears feasible, which could potentially decrease beam downtime and maintenance costs.

Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites have electronic and optoelectronic properties that make them appealing in many device applications1–4. Although many approaches focus on polycrystalline materials5–7, single-crystal hybrid perovskites show improved carrier transport and enhanced stability over their polycrystalline counterparts, due to their orientation-dependent transport behaviour8–10 and lower defect concentrations11,12. However, the fabrication of single-crystal hybrid perovskites, and controlling their morphology and composition, are challenging12. Here we report a solution-based lithography-assisted epitaxial-growth-and-transfer method for fabricating single-crystal hybrid perovskites on arbitrary substrates, with precise control of their thickness (from about 600 nanometres to about 100 micrometres), area (continuous thin films up to about 5.5 centimetres by 5.5 centimetres), and composition gradient in the thickness direction (for example, from methylammonium lead iodide, MAPbI3, to MAPb0.5Sn0.5I3). The transferred single-crystal hybrid perovskites are of comparable quality to those directly grown on epitaxial substrates, and are mechanically flexible depending on the thickness. Lead–tin gradient alloying allows the formation of a graded electronic bandgap, which increases the carrier mobility and impedes carrier recombination. Devices based on these single-crystal hybrid perovskites show not only high stability against various degradation factors but also good performance (for example, solar cells based on lead–tin-gradient structures with an average efficiency of 18.77 per cent). A solution-based lithography-assisted epitaxial-growth-and-transfer method is used to fabricate single-crystal hybrid perovskites on any surface, with precise control of the thickness, area and chemical composition gradient.

Despite renewed interest in lithium metal anodes, unstable electrodeposition of Li during operation has obstructed progress in practical battery applications. While deformation mechanics likely play a key role in Li's mechanical stability as an anode material, reports of Li's mechanical properties vary widely, perhaps due to variations in testing procedures. Through bulk tensile testing and nanoindentation, we provide a comprehensive assessment of the strain-rate and length-scale dependent mechanical properties of Li in its most commonly used form: high purity commercial foil. We find that bulk Li exhibits a yield strength between 0.57 and 1.26 MPa for strain rates from 5E-4 s−1 to 5E-1 s−1. For indentation tests with target P ˙ / P = 0.05 s−1, the hardness decreases precipitously from nearly 43 MPa to 7.5 MPa as the indentation depth increases from 250 nm to 10 µm. The plastic properties measured from bulk and nanoindentation testing exhibit strong strain-rate dependencies, with stress exponents of n = 6.55 and 6.9, respectively. We implement finite element analysis to relate the indentation depth to length scales of relevance in battery applications. Overall, the results presented herein may provide important guidance in designing Li anode architectures and charging conditions to mitigate unstable growth of Li during electrochemical cycling.

The utilization of metallic anodes holds promise for unlocking high gravimetric and volumetric energy densities and is pivotal to the adoption of ‘beyond Li’ battery chemistries. Much of the promise of magnesium batteries stems from claims regarding their lower predilection for dendrite growth. Whilst considerable effort has been invested in the design of novel electrolytes and cathodes, detailed studies of Mg plating are scarce. Using galvanostatic electrodeposition of metallic Mg from Grignard reagents in symmetric Mg–Mg cells, we establish a phase map characterized by disparate morphologies spanning the range from fractal aggregates of 2D nanoplatelets to highly anisotropic dendrites with singular growth fronts and nanowires entangled in the form of mats. The effects of electrolyte concentration, applied current density, and coordinating ligands have been explored. The study demonstrates a complex range of electrodeposited morphologies including canonical dendrites with shear moduli conducive to penetration through typical polymeric separators. We further demonstrate a strategy for mitigating Mg dendrite formation based on the addition of molecular Lewis bases that promote nanowire growth through selective surface coordination.

The operation of a Li-ion battery involves a concerted sequence of mass and charge transport processes, which are underpinned by alternating dilation/contraction of the active electrode materials. Several Li-ion battery failure mechanisms can be directly traced to lattice-mismatch strain arising from local compositional heterogeneities. The mechanisms of chemo-mechanical coupling that effect phase separation and the resulting complex evolution of internal stress fields remain inadequately understood. This work employs X-ray microscopy techniques to image the evolution of composition and stress across individual bent V2O5 particles. Experimental findings show that lattice strain imposed by the deformation of an individual cathode particle profoundly modifies phase separation patterns, yielding striated Li-rich domains ensconced within a Li-poor matrix. Particle-level inhomogeneities compound across scales resulting in fracture and capacity fade. Coupled phase field modeling of the evolution of domains reveals that the observed patterns minimize the energetic costs incurred by the geometrically imposed strain gradients during lithiation of the material and illustrate that phase separation motifs depend sensitively on the particle geometry, dimensions, interfacial energetics, and lattice incommensurability. Sharp differences in phase separation patterns are observed between lithiation and delithiation. This work demonstrates the promise of strain-engineering and particle geometry to deterministically control phase separation motifs such as to minimize accumulated stresses and mitigate important degradation mechanisms.

Mitigating the constraints and degradation mechanisms that limit cathode materials from realizing their full potential requires careful consideration of the electrode structure spanning multiple length scales. Beginning with the outbreak of COVID-19 at the dawn of 2020, the continuing spread of the pandemic has challenged the healthcare market and the supply chain of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) around the world. Moreover, the emergence of the variants of COVID-19 occurring in waves threatens the sufficient supply of PPE. Among the various types of PPE, N95 Respirators, surgical masks, and medical gowns are the most consumed and thus have a high potential for a serious shortage during such emergencies. Considering the unanticipated demand for PPE during a pandemic, re-processing of used PPE is one approach to continue to protect the health of first responders and healthcare personnel. This paper evaluates the viability and efficacy of using FDA-approved electron beam (eBeam) sterilization technology (ISO 11137) to re-process used PPE. PPEs including 3M N95 Respirators, Proxima Sirus gowns, and face shields were eBeam irradiated in different media (air, argon) over a dose range of 0-200 kGy. Several tests were then performed to examine surface properties, mechanical properties, functionality performance, discoloration phenomenon, and liquid barrier performance. The results show a reduction of filtration efficiency to about 63.6% in the N95 Respirator; however, charge regeneration may improve the re-processed efficiency. Additionally, mechanical degradation was observed in Proxima Sirus gown with increasing dose up to 100 kGy. However, no mechanical degradation was observed in the face shields after 10 times donning and doffing. Apart from the face shield, N95 Respirators and Proxima Sirus gown both show significant mechanical degradation with ebeam dose over sterilization doses (25 kGy), indicating that eBeam technology is not appropriate for the re-processing these PPEs.

In this work, we explore an intriguing concept: For the same exact composition (V2O5), can the atomic connectivity be altered to stabilize a metastable polymorph that provides access to an entirely distinctive cation insertion and diffusion mechanism?, Substantial improvements in cycle life, rate performance, accessible voltage, and reversible capacity are required to realize the promise of Li-ion batteries in full measure. Here, we have examined insertion electrodes of the same composition (V2O5) prepared according to the same electrode specifications and comprising particles with similar dimensions and geometries that differ only in terms of their atomic connectivity and crystal structure, specifically two-dimensional (2D) layered α-V2O5 that crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group and one-dimensional (1D) tunnel-structured ζ-V2O5 crystallized in a monoclinic space group. By using particles of similar dimensions, we have disentangled the role of specific structural motifs and atomistic diffusion pathways in affecting electrochemical performance by mapping the dynamical evolution of lithiation-induced structural modifications using ex situ scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements, and phase-field modeling. We find the operation of sharply divergent mechanisms to accommodate increasing concentrations of Li-ions: a series of distortive phase transformations that result in puckering and expansion of interlayer spacing in layered α-V2O5, as compared with cation reordering along interstitial sites in tunnel-structured ζ-V2O5. By alleviating distortive phase transformations, the ζ-V2O5 cathode shows reduced voltage hysteresis, increased Li-ion diffusivity, alleviation of stress gradients, and improved capacity retention. The findings demonstrate that alternative lithiation mechanisms can be accessed in metastable compounds by dint of their reconfigured atomic connectivity and can unlock substantially improved electrochemical performance not accessible in the thermodynamically stable phase.
