1. A framework for synchronizing a team of aerial robots in communication-limited environments

Abstract

This paper addresses a synchronization problem that arises when a team of aerial robots (ARs) need to communicate while performing assigned tasks in a cooperative scenario. Each robot has a limited communication range and flies within a previously assigned closed trajectory. When two robots are close enough, a communication link may be established, allowing the robots to exchange information. The goal is to schedule the flights such that the entire system can be synchronized for maximum information exchange, that is, every pair of neighbors always visit the feasible communication link at the same time. We propose an algorithm for scheduling a team of robots in this scenario and propose a robust framework in which the synchronization of a large team of robots is assured. The approach allows us to design a fault-tolerant system that can be used for multiple tasks such as surveillance, area exploration, searching for targets in a hazardous environment, and assembly and structure construction, to name a few.

3. 1,2,3... Un rhumatisme alcaptonurique au sein d'une même fratrie.

Abstract

L'ochronose ou l'alcaptonurie est une maladie autosomique récessive rare. Elle est due à un déficit de l'acide homogentisique-oxydase conduisant à l'accumulation d'acide homogentisique dans les tissus. Nous rapportons l'observation exceptionnelle de 3 patients issus d'une même famille de parents cosanguins ayant cette maladie héréditaire. Observation 1 : patiente O.F. âgée de 66 ans a présenté une raideur rachidienne lombaire, une limitation de la mobilité des ceintures scapulaire et pelvienne avec d'une boiterie. Une coloration bleuâtre des pavillons des oreilles, des angles internes, externe des yeux et des ongles a été constaté durant l'hospitalisation. L'imagerie a mis en évidence un « vide » et calcifications discales lombaires étagées (Fig. 1), des ponts ostéophytiques rachidien exubérants, une coxite bilatérale protrusive non opérable et une omarthrose avancée à droite. Le diagnostic d'ochronose a été posé sur des critères clinico-radiologiques. Durant l'hospitalisation et voyant l'intérêt accordé à son cas la malade rapporte que sa frangine a la même symptomatologie aux hanches et qu'elle a des difficultés à marcher, la sœur est convoquée pour hospitalisation... Observation 2. Patiente O.S. âgée de 62 ans, a présenté un tableau similaire avec une limitation de tous les mouvements des hanches, un dépôt de pigment bleuâtre sclérotique amarqué l'investigation diagnostique. Le test de coloration urinaire à la lumière s'est avéré positif, et la radiographie a montré une coxite bilatérale traitée par prothèse totale de hanche. Après quelques jours d'hospitalisation, la maman des 2 sœurs nous rapporte qu'un de ces fils présentait une coloration noir-bleuâtre de ses urines au moment du change lorsqu'il était enfant, le frère est convoqué en consultation pour investigation.... Observation 3. Dans un cadre de dépistage de cette famille particulière, le patient O.R. âgé de 50 ans totalement asymptomatique sur le plan rhumatologique a bénéficié d'une investigation radiologique révélant une calcification discale pathognomonique confortant le diagnostic de ce rhumatisme métabolique. Dans notre observation, les dommages structuraux été à un stade avancé, les sœurs étaient symptomatiques avec limitation de la mobilité des hanches, leur frère quant à lui est resté longtemps asymtomatique. L'ochronose est souvent révélée à l'âge adulte, principalement après la quatrième décennie. L'assombrissement urinaire est un signe annonciateur de la maladie, mais il est rarement révélateur de la maladie. Les manifestations cutanées représentent des signes d'alerte. L'arthropathie ochronotique est insidieuse mais peut être handicapante. Il n'existe pas de traitement médical spécifique de cette pathologie. Cette observation est originale de part le mode de révélation, du nombre de membres atteints de la même famille et surtout de part le retard diagnostic de l'atteinte rhumatismale révélée à un stade tardive. L'alcaptonurie est à l'origine d'une arthropathie dégénérative pouvant mettre en jeu le pronostic fonctionnel. Le dépistage par analyse moléculaire et l'étude génétique prennent un grand intérêt dans le diagnostic de certitude de cette maladie. Cette observation nous a permis de voir que même dans le cas d'une ochronose familiale, le pronostic de chaque membre reste différent et non prévisible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Previous studies have shown that children and adolescents with COVID-19 generally have mild disease. Children and adolescents with cancer, however, can have severe disease when infected with respiratory viruses. In this study, we aimed to understand the clinical course and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children and adolescents with cancer. Methods: We did a cohort study with data from 131 institutions in 45 countries. We created the Global Registry of COVID-19 in Childhood Cancer to capture de-identified data pertaining to laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections in children and adolescents (<19 years) with cancer or having received a haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. There were no centre-specific exclusion criteria. The registry was disseminated through professional networks through email and conferences and health-care providers were invited to submit all qualifying cases. Data for demographics, oncological diagnosis, clinical course, and cancer therapy details were collected. Primary outcomes were disease severity and modification to cancer-directed therapy. The registry remains open to data collection. Findings: Of 1520 submitted episodes, 1500 patients were included in the study between April 15, 2020, and Feb 1, 2021. 1319 patients had complete 30-day follow-up. 259 (19·9%) of 1301 patients had a severe or critical infection, and 50 (3·8%) of 1319 died with the cause attributed to COVID-19 infection. Modifications to cancer-directed therapy occurred in 609 (55·8%) of 1092 patients receiving active oncological treatment. Multivariable analysis revealed several factors associated with severe or critical illness, including World Bank low-income or lower-middle-income (odds ratio [OR] 5·8 [95% CI 3·8–8·8]; p<0·0001) and upper-middle-income (1·6 [1·2–2·2]; p=0·0024) country status; age 15–18 years (1·6 [1·1–2·2]; p=0·013); absolute lymphocyte count of 300 or less cells per mm3 (2·5 [1·8–3·4]; p<0·0001), absolute neutrophil count

Abstract

Tots els animals necessiten aminoàcids (AA), que són les unitats estructurals de les proteïnes, necessaris per a un òptim creixement, reproducció, lactació i manteniment. En els remugants, les proteïnes i AA es sotmeten primer a una degradació microbiana al rumen, el que fa difícil predir la qualitat i quantitat d'AA que serà absorbida per l'animal. Els AA absorbits són proporcionats per la proteïna microbiana sintetitzada al rumen, la proteïna no degradada al rumen i la proteïna crua endògena. La proteïna microbiana és insuficient per cobrir les quantitats necessàries d'aminoàcids per a una producció òptima (McDonald, 2011). L'extensa degradació de les proteïnes d'alt valor de l'aliment al rumen ha portat a desenvolupar el concepte de la protecció proteica contra la degradació ruminal amb l'objectiu principal de millorar el subministrament d'aminoàcids essencials a l'animal productiu i la reducció de les pèrdues de nitrogen com urea en l'orina. La metionina, la lisina i la histidina s'han identificat més sovint com els AA més limitants per a la màxima producció del bestiar lleter. En aquesta revisió s'han resumit les respostes a la suplementació dietètica d'aquests AA i les tècniques utilitzades per protegir-los de la degradació ruminal. Amb una formulació proteica més precisa en les dietes dels remugants, el metabolisme del nitrogen pot ser més eficient. El que vol dir que es pot millorar la producció de llet, reduir els costos d'alimentació i reduir l'excés de nitrogen en les dejeccions, una preocupació general pel que fa a la petjada ambiental de la producció animal. All animals require amino acids (AA), which are the building blocks of proteins required for optimal growth, reproduction, lactation and maintenance. In ruminants, proteins and AA are first subjected to a microbial degradation in the rumen making it difficult to predict the quality and quantity of AA that will be absorbed by the animal. The absorbed AA are provided by the ruminally synthesized microbial protein, the ruminally undegraded protein and the endogenous crude protein. Microbial protein is insufficient to supply the adequate amounts of amino acids for optimal production (McDonald, 2011). The extensive degradation of valuable feed proteins in the rumen has lead research to develop the concept of protein protection from ruminal degradation with the principal objective of enhancing the supply of essential amino acids to the productive animal and reduction of nitrogen losses as urea in the urine. Methionine, lysine and histidine have been identified more often as the most-limiting AA for maximum dairy cattle production. In this review it was summarized the responses to dietary supplementation of these AA and the technics used to protect them from rumen degradation. With a more precise protein formulation in ruminant diets, nitrogen metabolism can be more efficient. Which means that milk production can be improved, feed costs can be decreased and the excessive nitrogen in feces can be reduced, a general concern regarding the environmental footprint of animal production.

Abstract

This paper addresses a synchronization problem that arises when a team of aerial robots (ARs) need to communicate while performing assigned tasks in a cooperative scenario. Each robot has a limited communication range and flies within a previously assigned closed trajectory. When two robots are close enough, a communication link may be established, allowing the robots to exchange information. The goal is to schedule the flights such that the entire system can be synchronized for maximum information exchange, that is, every pair of neighbors always visit the feasible communication link at the same time. We propose an algorithm for scheduling a team of robots in this scenario and propose a robust framework in which the synchronization of a large team of robots is assured. The approach allows us to design a fault-tolerant system that can be used for multiple tasks such as surveillance, area exploration, searching for targets in a hazardous environment, and assembly and structure construction, to name a few.

Abstract

Autonomous ships require a sense-andcollision- avoidance functionality based on surveillance of the ocean surface in order to detect unmapped and potentially non-cooperative obstacles and hazards, and to engage into evasive manoeuvres to avoid impending collisions. In this paper, we study the concept of using an autonomous ship being assisted by an unmanned aerial surveillance system (UASS) that provides information to the ship in order to implement collision avoidance in compliance with the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). The motivation is that a UASS provides complementary sensing capabilities that can be combined with a conventional maritime radar and Automatic Identification System (AIS) to detect smaller obstacles that may be hidden in clutter, behind other objects, or submerged close to the surface. We propose a system architecture and implement a simulation environment to illustrate the concept and study the feasibility of the key control algorithms based on receding-horizon optimization.

26. Terminal airspace modelling for unmanned aircraft systems integration

Abstract

This paper considers the problem of integrating unmanned aircraft into low altitude airspace above urban environments, including major terminal areas and helicopter landing sites. A simple set of data-driven modelling techniques are used to explore, visualise and assess existing air traffic in a manner more informative to the unmanned aircraft community. First, low altitude air traffic data sets (position reports) are analysed with respect to existing exclusion/no-fly zones. Second, an alternative geometric approach to defining and comparing various exclusion zones is derived based on set theory. The analysis is applied to a region of south-east Queensland, Australia including Brisbane International Airport and three helicopter landing areas. The results challenge some of the current unmanned aircraft regulations, and should help to motivate a more rigorous scientific approach to safely integrate unmanned aircraft.

[EN] This paper summarizes the results of the AWARE project coordinated by the Robotics, Vision and Control Group (GRVC) of the University of Seville and funded by the European Commission under the VI Framework Program (IST-2006-33579). The paper briefly describes the architecture developed for the autonomous decentralized cooperation between unmanned aerial vehicles, wireless sensor/actuator networks and ground camera networks. Abstract

This article presents a visual servoing system to follow a 3D moving object by a Micro Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (MUAV). The presented control strategy is based only on the visual information given by an adaptive tracking method based on the colour information. A visual fuzzy system has been developed for servoing the camera situated on a rotary wing MAUV, that also considers its own dynamics. This system is focused on continuously following of an aerial moving target object, maintaining it with a fixed safe distance and centred on the image plane. The algorithm is validated on real flights on outdoors scenarios, showing the robustness of the proposed systems against winds perturbations, illumination and weather changes among others. The obtained results indicate that the proposed algorithms is suitable for complex controls task, such object following and pursuit, flying in formation, as well as their use for indoor navigation

Abstract

Background and study aims: Capsule endoscopy may play a role in the evaluation of patients presenting with acute upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage in the emergency department. Patients and methods: We evaluated adults with acute upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage presenting to the emergency departments of two academic centers. Patients ingested a wireless video capsule, which was followed immediately by a nasogastric tube aspiration and later by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD).We compared capsule endoscopy with nasogastric tube aspiration for determination of the presence of blood, and with EGD for discrimination of the source of bleeding, identification of peptic/inflammatory lesions, safety, and patient satisfaction. Results: The study enrolled 49 patients (32 men, 17 women; mean age 58.3 ± 19 years), but three patients did not complete the capsule endoscopy and five were intolerant of the nasogastric tube. Blood was detected in the upper gastrointestinal tract significantly more often by capsule endoscopy (15 /18 [83.3 %]) than by nasogastric tube aspiration (6 /18 [33.3 %]; P=0.035). There was no significant difference in the identification of peptic/ inflammatory lesions between capsule endoscopy (27 /40 [67.5 %]) and EGD (35 /40 [87.5 %]; P= 0.10, OR 0.39 95%CI 0.11-1.15). Capsule endoscopy reached the duodenum in 45/46 patients (98 %). One patient (2.2 %) had self-limited shortness of breath and one (2.2 %) had coughing on capsule ingestion. Conclusions: In an emergency department setting, capsule endoscopy appears feasible and safe in people presenting with acute upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Capsule endoscopy identifies gross blood in the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the duodenum, significantly more often than nasogastric tube aspiration and identifies inflammatory lesions, as well as EGD. Capsule endoscopy may facilitate patient triage and earlier endoscopy, but should not be considered a substitute for EGD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: The aim was to develop a reporting system for collecting human factors problem reports to establish a database to guide activities for improving health care quality and patient safety.Background: The current error and incident report systems do not provide sufficient and adequate coverage of the factors contributing to impaired safety and care quality. They fail to examine the range of difficulties that clinical staff encounters in the conduct of daily work.Method: A voluntary problem-reporting system was developed to be used by hospital wards' clinicians and was tested in four wards of two hospitals in Israel. The system is based on human factors--formatted problem reports submitted by physicians and nurses on difficulties and hazards they confront in their daily work. Reports are grouped and evaluated by a team of human factor professionals.Results: A total of 359 reports were collected in the wards during 12 weeks, as compared with a total of 200 incidents reports that were collected during a period of 5 years with the existing obligatory incident reporting system. In-depth observational studies conducted on the wards confirmed the ability of the new system to highlight major human factors problems, differentially identifying specific problems in each of the wards studied. Problems reported were directly related to general factors affecting care quality and patient safety.Conclusion: Validation studies confirmed the reliability of the reporting system in pinpointing major problems per investigated unit according to its specific characteristics.Application: This type of reporting system could fill an important information gap with the potential to be a cost-effective initial database source to guide human factors efforts to improve care quality, reduce errors, and increase patient safety. Abstract

A study of the ecology and culture feasibility of 9 species of native orchids from Argentina: 2 belonging to the genus Sacoita, 1 species of Skeptrostachys; 1 species of Pelexia; 3 species of the genus Habenaria and 2 of the genus Chloraea were performed. The individuals were cultivated in the City of Buenos Aires from propagules or adult plants in pots with soil from the collection sites. The production of aerial and reproductive stems, as well as storage organs, was observed. The watering was managed according to the climatic conditions of the collection place. After at least one period of growth the adaptation to culture was evaluated. The species under study live in different ecosystems from forests to grasslands. Most of the species responded positively to their cultivation in containers. We discuss the possible use of these species for gardening, the suitable conditions for their cultivation and the importance of the data obtained in the ex-situ conservation of these terrestrial orchids.
