Research libraries increasingly seek user-centered customizable library portals. Portal software allows seamless access and delivery of library electronic resources through either proprietary or open source portal solutions. This article examines the implementation of the My Library open source portal software application at the Auburn University Libraries. It addresses the history of the open source movement and its place in library culture, particularly within research libraries. The Auburn University Libraries' experience provides a case study for portal evaluation, selection, and implementation. The article also discusses the future implications of such systems. The authors extend their process for creating and establishing trust relationships to include steps for restoring trust relationships after catastrophic events. Part of this model will include best practices for business continuity relationships and will integrate trust models from Holland and Lockett and Ring and Van de Ven. These models provide key frameworks for understanding how trust can be utilized as collaborative starting points as well as recovery points from physical natural disaster or critical data loss. Additionally, the authors will present findings from an audience poll conducted on May 15, 2009 during the presentation of this topic at the 4th International Conference on Open Repositories with additional conclusions and commentary. Research libraries traditionally have focused their efforts on building local collections to support the research needs of their organizations and providing for the discovery and use of resources within these collections. The emergence in recent years of disciplinary and institutional digital repositories presents new challenges for research libraries. One of the most significant challenges will be the need for new types of statistical assessment based on the use of extra-bibliographic facets of the content in these repositories, such as usage data, impact factors, and contextual relationships. This article summarizes the success of U. S. research libraries in creating shared standards for electronic resources statistical assessment and argues that institutional repository implementers must develop similar evaluative metrics. The article focuses on the environmental landscape that will look first at portals within the framework of libraries and then expand that view to the framework within higher education in general. Currently within academic and some public libraries there has been a movement toward portalization of library content, especially online electronic resources. This type of Web access can be thought of in three distinct categories: Customizable E-resource portals, Integrated Web service portals and Metasearch systems that contain portal features. A typical use of portals in libraries is as a framework for presenting customized views of electronic resources. These types of portals serve as aggregators for customers to arrange and display information resources in a manner that best serves their information needs. It also enables customers to pick and choose from countless resources that are provided by the typical research library without having to delve through a catalog of resources or other such electronic listing of information products.

This study had two objectives: (a) to examine whether or not lipids and lipoproteins change in response to acute behavioral stress in young adults; and (b) to test the extent of sex differences in the magnitude of the lipid, lipoprotein, neuroendocrine, and cardiovascular changes during stress. Nineteen women and 22 men participated in a serial subtraction task, a videotaped speech task, and a self-evaluation task. The cholesterol portions of low density and high density lipoproteins, triglycerides, free fatty acids, epiuephrine, norepinephrine, heart rate, and blood pressure were examined at rest and during each stressor. Repeated measures analyses of variance indicated that stress-related levels of low density and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, free fatty acids, norepinephrine, heart rate, and blood pressure were elevated, relative to baseline, and that these responses were partially task or order dependent. Subsequent analyses of sex differences showed that males had larger low density lipoprotein-cholesterol and blood pressure increases during all tasks, relative to those of females, and females had larger heart rate responses to the speech task, relative to those of males. There were no sex differences in plasma catecholamine adjustments. These data demonstrate that the cholesterol fractions of high and low density lipoproteins increase during acute psychological stress, and are the first to systematically examine male/female differences in those stress responses. Open science is prompting wide efforts to make data from research available for broader use. However, sharing data is complicated by important protections on the data (e.g., protections of privacy and intellectual property). The spectrum of options existing between data needing to be fully open access and data that simply cannot be shared at all is quite limited. This paper puts forth a generalized remote secure enclave as a socio-technical framework consisting of policies, human processes, and technologies that work hand in hand to enable controlled access and use of restricted data. Based on experience in implementing the enclave for computational, analytical access to a massive collection of in-copyright texts, we discuss the synergies and trade-offs that exist between software components and policy and process components in striking the right balance between safety for the data, ease of use, and efficiency. Middle-aged (45-51 years) women performed four tasks while their heart rate, blood pressure, and plasma catecholamines were measured. The tasks were serial subtraction, mirror image tracing, speech, and postural tilt. The speech task was considered to be particularly relevant to women because of its emphasis on social skills. Fifteen premenopausal women reported menstruating regularly and were tested in the early follicular phase. Sixteen postmenopausal women reported not menstruating for at least 12 months and their hormonal status was verified by serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone. Results showed that postmenopausal women exhibited greater increases from baseline in heart rate during all tasks, relative to premenopausal women, with a particularly pronounced increase during the speech task. Postmenopausal women exhibited greater increases from baseline in systolic blood pressure and epinephrine, relative to premenopausal women, during the speech task only. Explanations for the stressor-specific effect of menopausal status were discussed. The results suggest that reproductive hormones may interact with stressor characteristics to determine middle-aged women's physiological responses to stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
