2. Rovibrationally-Resolved Photodissociaton of SH$^+$

Abstract

Photodissociation cross sections for the SH$^+$ radical are computed from all rovibrational (RV) levels of the ground electronic state X$~^3\Sigma^-$ for wavelengths from threshold to 500~\AA. The five electronic transitions, $2~ ^3\Sigma^- \leftarrow$ X$~^3\Sigma^-$, $3~ ^3\Sigma^- \leftarrow$ X$~^3\Sigma^-$, $A~ ^3\Pi \leftarrow$ X$~^3\Sigma^-$, $2~ ^3\Pi \leftarrow$ X$~^3\Sigma^-$, and $3~ ^3\Pi \leftarrow$ X$~^3\Sigma^-$, are treated with a fully quantum-mechanical two-state model, {i.e. no non-adiabatic coupling between excited states was included in our work.}. The photodissociation calculations incorporate adiabatic potentials and transition dipole moment functions computed in the multireference configuration interaction approach along with the Davidson correction (MRCI+Q), but adjusted to match available experimental molecular data and asymptotic atomic limits. Local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) photodissociation cross sections were computed which assume a Boltzmann distribution of RV levels in the X$~^3\Sigma^-$ molecular state of the SH$^+$ cation. The LTE cross sections are presented for temperatures in the range 1000-10,000~K. Applications of the current photodissociation cross sections to interstellar gas, photon-dominated regions, and stellar atmospheres are briefly discussed., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

The theory of nonlinear mass-spring chains has a history stretching back to the now famous numerical simulations of Fermi, Pasta and Ulam. The unexpected results of that experiment have led to many new fields of study. Despite this, the mathematics of the lattice equations have proved sufficiently rich to attract continued attention to the present day. This work is concerned with the motions of an infinite one dimensional lattice with nearest-neighbour interactions governed by a generic potential. The Hamiltonian of such a system may be written $H = \sum_{i=-\infty}^{\infty} \, \Bigl(\frac{1}{2}p_i^2 + V(q_{i+1}-q_i)\Bigr)$, in terms of the momenta $p_i$ and the displacements $q_i$ of the lattice sites. All sites are assumed to be of equal mass. Certain generic conditions are placed on the potential $V$. Of particular interest are the solitary wave solutions which are known to exist upon such lattices. The KdV equation has long been known to emerge in a formal manner from the lattice equations as a continuum limit. More recently, the lattice's localized nonlinear modes have been rigorously approximated by the KdV's well-studied soliton solution, in the lattice's long wavelength regime. To date, however, little is known about how, and to what extent, lattice solitary waves differ from KdV solitons. It is proved in this work that a solution (which we prove to be unique) to a particular linear ordinary differential equation provides a correction to the KdV approximation. This gives, in an explicit way, the lowest order effect of lattice discreteness upon lattice solitary waves. It is also shown how such discreteness effects are propagated along the lattice both in isolation (single soliton case), and in the presence of another soliton correction (the bisoliton case). In the latter case their interaction is studied and the impact of lattice discreteness upon lattice solitary wave interactions is observed. This is possible by virtue of the discovery of an evolution equation for discreteness effects on the lattice. This equation is proved to have appropriate unique solutions and is found to be strikingly similar to corresponding equations known in both the theories of shallow water waves and ion-acoustic waves.

After laying their eggs and refilling the egg chamber, sea turtles scatter sand extensively around the nest site. This is presumed to camouflage the nest, or optimize local conditions for egg development, but a consensus on its function is lacking. We quantified activity and mapped the movements of hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) turtles during sand-scattering. For leatherbacks, we also recorded activity at each sand-scattering position. For hawksbills, we recorded breathing rates during nesting as an indicator of metabolic investment and compared with published values for leatherbacks. Temporal and inferred metabolic investment in sand-scattering was substantial for both species. Neither species remained near the nest while sand-scattering, instead moving to several other positions to scatter sand, changing direction each time, progressively displacing themselves from the nest site. Movement patterns were highly diverse between individuals, but activity at each sand-scattering position changed little between completion of egg chamber refilling and return to the sea. Our findings are inconsistent with sand-scattering being to directly camouflage the nest, or primarily for modifying the nest-proximal environment. Instead, they are consistent with the construction of a series of dispersed decoy nests that may reduce the discovery of nests by predators.

7. Comparative effects of organic and inorganic selenium on selenium transfer from sows to nursing pigs

Abstract

To investigate the effects of supplemental Se on the transfer of Se to nursing pigs when sows are fed diets containing a Se level above the NRC recommendation (0.15 ppm), sows were fed diets containing no supplemental Se or supplemental (0.3 ppm) Se from sodium selenite or Se yeast. A nonSe-fortified corn-soybean meal basal diet with a high endogenous Se content served as the negative control (0.20 to 0.23 ppm Se). Fifty-two sows were fed diets from 60 d prepartum until 14 d of lactation. Six sows per treatment were bled at 60 and 30 d prepartum, at farrowing, and at 14 d postpartum to measure serum Se concentrations. Colostrum was collected within 12 h postpartum, and milk was collected at 14 d of lactation. Blood was obtained from 3 pigs each from 12 litters per treatment at birth and at weaning (d 14), and pooled serum was analyzed for Se and immunoglobulin G concentrations and glutathione peroxidase activity. Regardless of treatment, serum Se in sows declined throughout gestation and gradually increased during lactation. Sows fed Se yeast tended (P < 0.06) to have greater serum Se at farrowing than sows fed unsupplemented diets. Colostrum and milk (d 14) Se concentrations increased (P < 0.01) when sows were fed Se from yeast but not from sodium selenite. At birth, serum Se was increased (P < 0.01) for pigs whose dams were fed Se yeast compared with pigs from sows fed the basal diet. At 14 d of age, there was no difference in serum Se concentration of pigs from dams fed any of the treatments. Pig serum immunoglobulin G concentrations and glutathione peroxidase-1 activity were unaffected by dietary Se source. Supplementation of gestating and lactating sow diets with Se (0.3 ppm) from an organic or inorganic source reduced the number of stillbirths per litter. However, only pigs born to sows fed organic Se (Se yeast) had greater serum Se at birth. Organic Se increased Se concentration of colostrum and 14-d milk to a greater degree than inorganic Se. 9. High-risk sexual behaviour in young people with mental health disorders

Abstract

AIM: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of high-risk sexual behaviours, sequelae and associated factors in young people attending a youth mental health service. METHODS: The study design was a cross-sectional survey of 103 young people aged between 15-25 years carried out across four specialist mental health clinics. A questionnaire on the sexual health of secondary level students was adapted for this study. Mental health symptomatology was assessed through the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS). RESULTS: The mean age was 20.9 (SD ±2.8) years, with 50.5% being female, 41.7% male and 7.7% transgender. A total of 52.4% (N = 54) attended the psychosis [EPPIC] clinic; 15.6% (N = 16) attended the ultra-high risk for psychosis [PACE] clinic; 19.4% (N = 20) attended the personality disorders [HYPE] clinic; and 12.6% (N = 13) attended the mood clinic [YMC]. The mean BPRS score was 47.7 (SD ±12.2). A total of 77.7% of young people had previously been sexually active and of these, 37.5% did not use consistent contraception; 26.3% had been pregnant, of which 95.2% were unplanned. A total of 68.8% reported having been tested for sexually transmitted infections and 25.5% tested positive. The severity of symptoms or clinical characteristics were not associated with engagement in high-risk sexual behaviours. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that young people with mental health disorders have high needs in regard to their sexual health, which could be addressed by incorporating sexual health referral pathways into early intervention services.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Patients with systolic heart failure and anemia have worse symptoms, functional capacity, and outcomes than those without anemia. We evaluated the effects of darbepoetin alfa on clinical outcomes in patients with systolic heart failure and anemia. METHODS: In this randomized, double-blind trial, we assigned 2278 patients with systolic heart failure and mild-to-moderate anemia (hemoglobin level, 9.0 to 12.0 g per deciliter) to receive either darbepoetin alfa (to achieve a hemoglobin target of 13 g per deciliter) or placebo. The primary outcome was a composite of death from any cause or hospitalization for worsening heart failure. RESULTS: The primary outcome occurred in 576 of 1136 patients (50.7%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 565 of 1142 patients (49.5%) in the placebo group (hazard ratio in the darbepoetin alfa group, 1.01; 95% confidence interval, 0.90 to 1.13; P=0.87). There was no significant between-group difference in any of the secondary outcomes. The neutral effect of darbepoetin alfa was consistent across all prespecified subgroups. Fatal or nonfatal stroke occurred in 42 patients (3.7%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 31 patients (2.7%) in the placebo group (P=0.23). Thromboembolic adverse events were reported in 153 patients (13.5%) in the darbepoetin alfa group and 114 patients (10.0%) in the placebo group (P=0.01). Cancer-related adverse events were similar in the two study groups. CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with darbepoetin alfa did not improve clinical outcomes in patients with systolic heart failure and mild-to-moderate anemia. Abstract

A male neutered Cavalier King Charles spaniel was presented initially because of pruritus, seborrhoea and otitis externa at about 15 months of age. The initial clinical diagnosis was allergic dermatitis. Treatment with antibiotic and antifungal ear preparations, prednisolone and cephalosporins over the following year did not fully resolve the problem and the dog also developed a mucopurulent conjunctivitis with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The dermatological and ophthalmological conditions prompted investigation for the condition known as congenital keratoconjunctivitis sicca and ichthyosiform dermatosis (CKCSID), which has been previously reported overseas in Cavalier King Charles spaniels. Histopathology of skin biopsies confirmed the likelihood of the latter diagnosis. Genetic testing was undertaken and established that the dog was heterozygous for the disorder. The dermatosis and the keratoconjunctivitis are being managed by ongoing symptomatic therapy, with reasonable response to the former, however, the keratoconjunctivitis sicca is expected to result in eventual blindness. Clinical cases of CKCSID are generally thought to be homozygous for the genetic mutation, although this has been questioned in some publications. 14. Atomistic to continuum models for crystals

Abstract

The theory of nonlinear mass-spring chains has a history stretching back to the now famous numerical simulations of Fermi, Pasta and Ulam. The unexpected results of that experiment have led to many new fields of study. Despite this, the mathematics of the lattice equations have proved sufficiently rich to attract continued attention to the present day. This work is concerned with the motions of an infinite one dimensional lattice with nearest-neighbour interactions governed by a generic potential. The Hamiltonian of such a system may be written $H = \sum_{i=-\infty}^{\infty} \, \Bigl(\frac{1}{2}p_i^2 + V(q_{i+1}-q_i)\Bigr)$, in terms of the momenta $p_i$ and the displacements $q_i$ of the lattice sites. All sites are assumed to be of equal mass. Certain generic conditions are placed on the potential $V$. Of particular interest are the solitary wave solutions which are known to exist upon such lattices. The KdV equation has long been known to emerge in a formal manner from the lattice equations as a continuum limit. More recently, the lattice's localized nonlinear modes have been rigorously approximated by the KdV's well-studied soliton solution, in the lattice's long wavelength regime. To date, however, little is known about how, and to what extent, lattice solitary waves differ from KdV solitons. It is proved in this work that a solution (which we prove to be unique) to a particular linear ordinary differential equation provides a correction to the KdV approximation. This gives, in an explicit way, the lowest order effect of lattice discreteness upon lattice solitary waves. It is also shown how such discreteness effects are propagated along the lattice both in isolation (single soliton case), and in the presence of another soliton correction (the bisoliton case). In the latter case their interaction is studied and the impact of lattice discreteness upon lattice solitary wave interactions is observed. This is possible by virtue of the discovery of an evolution equation for discreteness effects on the lattice. This equation is proved to have appropriate unique solutions and is found to be strikingly similar to corresponding equations known in both the theories of shallow water waves and ion-acoustic waves.

Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of yeast-derived products on growth performance, gut lesion score, intestinal population ofClostridium perfringens, and local innate immunity of broiler chickens challenged withC. perfringens. One-day-old broiler chickens were randomly assigned to eight dietary treatments providing six replicate pens of 55 birds each per treatment. Dietary treatments consisted of Control diets without and withC. perfringenschallenge, and diets containing bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD, 55 g/tonne), nucleotides (150 g/tonne), yeast cell wall (YCW, 300 g/tonne), and a commercial product Maxi-Gen Plus (1 kg/tonne) fed to chickens challenged withC. perfringens. Diets containing 10% distillers dried grains with solubles without and withC. perfringenschallenge were also used. Birds were orally challenged withC. perfringens(108 colony-forming units (cfu)/bird) on day 14. On day 21, intestinal samples were collected for gene expression analysis. Pathogen challenge significantly (P < 0.05) impaired feed intake, body weight gain, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) shortly after the challenge (14–21 days). IncreasedC. perfringenscounts and intestinal lesion scores were observed for challenged birds except the BMD-containing diet. Over the entire trial (1–35 days), no difference in growth performance was observed except the BMD diet which improved FCR over the Control, challenged group. Birds receiving nucleotides showed increased expression of toll-like receptors and cytokines interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-18 compared to the Control, challenged group. Expression of macrophage mannose receptor and IL-18 was upregulated in birds receiving YCW. Increased expression of cytokines and receptors involved in innate immunity in broilers receiving nucleotides and YCW suggests the immunomodulatory properties of these products under pathogen challenge conditions. Abstract

Background An ulcerative dermopathy caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans is described in two alpacas ( Vicugna pacos) domiciled in endemic areas of Victoria, Australia. Results The diagnosis was confirmed in both cases by PCR targeting the M. ulcerans-specific insertion sequence, IS 2404. Extensive wound debridement and bandaging was effective in controlling local disease in one alpaca, although the animal was eventually euthanased because of suspected disease recurrence at other anatomical sites. Treatment was not undertaken in the second animal, but the results of a complete necropsy are described. Investigation of the environs of the second animal yielded low levels of M. ulcerans DNA associated with a variety of samples. The potential use of adjunctive antibiotic therapies directed against M. ulcerans infection in this species is discussed. Conclusion Mycobacterium ulcerans infection should be suspected in alpacas domiciled in endemic areas and presented with ulcerative skin disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of monoclonal antibodies which recognize antigenic determinants on lymphoid cells has resulted in the immunologic analysis of a wide variety of diseases where disturbance of the immune system is believed to be important in pathogenesis. These reagents may be used to scrutinize cell suspensions, like blood and lymphoid cells in tissues. The diseases to be discussed in this review are lupus erythematosus, leprosy, sarcoidosis, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and parapsoriasis. The specificity of the monoclonal antibodies used is shown in tabulated form.

Abstract

Plasma zinc, serum albumin and alkaline phosphatase (a zinc-dependent enzyme) were measured in thirty-five psoriatics and their age- and sex-matched controls. No significant difference was seen between these two groups as a whole, but psoriatics with less than 10% surface involvement had significantly higher mean plasma zinc levels than their respective control group. Psoriatic patients also showed a relationship between the extent of surface involvement and the plasma zinc level, those with more extensive involvement having lower levels than those with minimal involvement. 48. Comparative Availability of Amino Acids in OAC Wintri Triticale and Corn for Pigs

Abstract

Availability of amino acids in two samples of OAC Wintti triticale (triticale A, 15.5% protein and triticale B, 10% protein; on a dry matter basis) and corn were determined using nine Yorkshire-Landrace crossbred barrows, fitted with ileocecal simple T-cannulae, in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square experiment. Metabolic fecal and ileal amino acids were determined with barrows fed a “nitrogen-free” diet. All indispensible amino acids except isoleucine, methionine and valine were more (P<.05) available in corn than in either triticale, when measured at the terminal ileum. Triticale A had higher (P<.05) availability of indispensable amino acids determined from ileal digesta than triticale B, except for aginine and threonine. Availabilities of lysine and threonine measured at the terminal ileum increased (P<.05) in the following order: triticale B < triticale A < corn. Availabilities based on fecal analysis for most essential amino acids except isoleucine, lysine and valine were greater (P<.05) in corn than triticale. Triticale B had lower (P<.05) availabilities of most essential amino acids by fecal analysis, except arginine, than triticale A. A net disappearance (P<.10) of the amino acids, except lysine and phenylalanine in corn and isoleucine and lysine in triticale B, occurred in the large intestine. Proline, glycine and threonine represented over 60% of the amino acids in metabolic ileal digesta.

49. Comparative Protein and Energy Value of OAC Wintri Triticale and Corn for Pigs

Abstract

A replicated 3 × 3 Latin square experiment utilizing nine barrows fitted with ileocecal simple T-cannulae was conducted to determine protein and energy utilization in two samples of OAC Wintri triticale (triticale A, 15.5% and triticale B, 10% protein on a dry matter basis) and compare them to corn. Apparent fecal and ileal digestibilities of dry matter, gross energy and ether extract were greater (P<.05) in corn than either sample of triticale. Fecal and ileal digestibilities of dry matter and gross energy were greater (P<.05) in triticale A than in triticale B. Apparent fecal nitrogen digestibility was similar (P>.10) between corn and triticale A but lower (P<.05) in triticale B. Ileal nitrogen digestibility decreased (P<.05) in the following order: corn > triticale A > triticale B (79 > 75 > 67%). True fecal nitrogen digestibilities, determined by feeding the barrows a “nitrogen-free” diet were 89, 87 and 78% in corn, triticale A and triticale B, respectively. Net protein utilization and biological value were not different (P>.10) among grains. Digestible energy decreased (P<.05) in the following order: corn > triticale A > triticale B (4.08 > 3.77 > 3.56 kcal/g). Meta-bolizable energy (ME) and nitrogen-corrected ME were greater (P<.05) in corn (3.66 and 3.62 kcal/g) than either sample of triticale, but were similar (P>.10) between triticale A and triticale B (3.19 and 3.13 vs 3.12 and 3.08 kcal/g, respectively). The ME values were determined with the grain as the only source of protein and energy, and may not represent the true values when fed in a balanced diet. Chromic oxide index and total collection provided similar (P>.10) estimates of fecal dry matter, energy and nitrogen digestibilities in corn; however, these response criteria were consistently underestimated (P<.05) by chromic oxide index in both triticales.
