Due to enormous quantities with hazards and complexity in nature is a big challenge for effective treatment of wastewater from pharmaceutical processes including herbal extraction through conventional methods of distillation. The situation is further aggravated in countries facing high rising population, urbanization, and industrialization resulting in the generation of industrial wastes. The study has been carried out in the herbal extraction industry by conducting stage-wise sampling of ETP based on the conventional method and further coupled with ozonation as an advanced treatment to comply with regulatory standards. Additionally, the same process was studied that implementing the best available technology (BAT) by providing ETP with advanced technology modules such as MBR (membrane bioreactor) + RO + O3 has not only resulted in compliance with standards but also reuse of treated wastewater into the process and utilities has been proved to be techno-economically a viable and sustainable option. Modifying existing aeration tanks and advanced oxidation through ozone injection post-biological treatment has resulted in COD and BOD reduction of 96.42% and 99.0% respectively. Whereas in the case of MBR + RO + O3, the values of pH, BOD, COD, TSS, and sulfide have been observed as 8.32, 2.0 mg.L-1, 14.0 mg.L-1, 1.0 mg.L-1 and 0.0 mg.L-1 respectively and 98% recovery of treated effluent, thus saving 44 KL.day-1 of freshwater resulting into significant financial benefits of Rupees 12.59 lacs annually, which otherwise was outsourced through tankers. Simple Summary: The problem of food and agricultural waste, known as agro-food byproducts (AFB), is growing, and researchers are trying to find ways to turn this waste into something useful. One promising solution is acidogenic fermentation, a process that converts AFB into volatile fatty acids (VFAs) that can potentially be added to animal feed, providing energy and reducing reliance on traditional feed components like silage and concentrate. The main goal of this study was to determine if adding VFAs to ruminant (for example, cow) feed would affect digestion and fermentation in the rumen (the first stomach). Using a lab method called the Menke gas method, we tested how VFAs impact gas production, including methane. The results showed that VFAs can replace some of the energy usually provided by silage and concentrate without disrupting the fermentation process. Specifically, replacing 10% of the energy from silage and 20% from concentrate with VFAs in a mixed feed could reduce methane emissions while supplying enough energy for the animals. This approach benefits society by reducing waste from food and agriculture, lowering methane emissions from livestock, and producing more sustainable meat and dairy products. The growing demand for sustainable ruminant feed alternatives has motivated the application of bioconversion approaches for the valorization of agro-food byproducts (AFB) into feed additives and supplements. The present study thoroughly investigated substituting volatile fatty acids (VFAs) obtained from acidogenic fermentation (AF) of AFB as an energy source in ruminant feed. Rumen in vitro digestibility assays were conducted utilizing the gas production method, wherein the VFAs obtained from AF of apple pomace and potato protein liquor was substituted with partial silage and concentrate energy at levels of 10%, 20%, and 30%. The results indicate that substituting 20% of the concentrate's energy with VFA mixture significantly reduced methane production and had no adverse effect on the production and accumulation of VFAs in the simulated rumen media. Conversely, replacing 10% of the silage energy with VFAs led to a decrease in methane production and further enhanced the production of VFAs. Readily digestible VFAs in ruminant feed have the potential to enhance energy availability and sustainability in ruminant farming practices, aligning with the principles of circular economy and waste valorization. Improper disposal of municipal solid waste led to the release of heavy metals into the environment through leachate accumulation, causing a range of health and environmental problems. Phycoremediation, using microalgae to remove heavy metals from contaminated water, was investigated as a promising alternative to traditional remediation methods. This study explored the potential of Scenedesmus sp. as a phycoremediation agent for heavy metal removal from landfill leachate. The study was conducted in batch, continuous, and membrane bioreactor (MBR). In the batch system, Scenedesmus sp. was added to the leachate and incubated for 15 days before the biomass was separated from the suspension. In the continuous system, Scenedesmus sp. was cultured in a flow-through system, and the leachate was continuously fed into the system with flow rates measured at 120, 150, and 180 mL/h for 27 days. The MBR system was similar to the continuous system, but it incorporated a membrane filtration step to remove suspended solids from the treated water. The peristaltic pump was calibrated to operate at five different flow rates: 0.24 L/h, 0.30 L/h, 0.36 L/h, 0.42 L/h, and 0.48 L/h for the MBR system and ran for 24 h. The results showed that Scenedesmus sp. was effective in removing heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) from landfill leachate in all three systems. The highest removal efficiency was observed for Ni, with a removal of 0.083 mg/L in the MBR and 0.068 mg/L in batch mode. The lowest removal efficiency was observed for Zn, with a removal of 0.032 mg/L in the MBR, 0.027 mg/L in continuous mode, and 0.022 mg/L in batch mode. The findings depicted that the adsorption capacity varied among the studied metal ions, with the highest capacity observed for Ni (II) and the lowest for Zn (II), reflecting differences in metal speciation, surface charge interactions, and affinity for the adsorbent material. These factors influenced the adsorption process and resulted in varying adsorption capacities for different metal ions. The study also evaluated the biomass growth of Scenedesmus sp. and found that it was significantly influenced by the initial metal concentration in the leachate. Recently, membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have emerged as a promising approach for sewage treatment because of their high efficiency in removing contaminants. However, they are prone to membrane-fouling and computational loading. To resolve these issues, this research article presents an innovative control strategy combining both artificial bee colony optimization (ABC) and recurrent neural network (RNN) to regulate the performance of MBR in sewage treatment. Initially, the influent wastewater data were collected and pre-processed using the regression imputation approach. RNN architecture was designed and trained using the pre-processed data to forecast the performance of the MBN system. Further, the ABC algorithm was applied to optimize the function of MBR by adjusting the control variables. The developed model was validated with the publically available wastewater treatment plan dataset and the effectiveness of the developed model was validated by performing intensive performance and comparative assessment. The performance evaluation demonstrates that the proposed methodology attained greater results of 98.59% effluent quality, 98.70% of nutrient removal efficiency, less computational time of 2.87 s, and a low membrane-fouling index of 1.23%. Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs) are contaminants of emerging concern with marked potential to impact public and environmental health. This review focusses on factors that influence the presence, abundance, and dissemination of ARGs within Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) and associated effluents. Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (ARB) and ARGs have been detected in the influent and the effluent of WWTPs worldwide. Different levels of wastewater treatment (primary, secondary, and tertiary) show different degrees of removal efficiency of ARGs, with further differences being observed when ARGs are captured as intracellular or extracellular forms. Furthermore, routinely used molecular methodologies such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction or whole genome sequencing may also vary in resistome identification and in quantifying ARG removal efficiencies from WWTP effluents. Additionally, we provide an overview of the One Health risk assessment framework, as well as future strategies on how WWTPs can be assessed for environmental and public health impact. Tanneries generate copious amounts of potentially toxic sludge and effluent from the processing of skins and hides to leather. The effluent requires remediation before discharge to protect the receiving environment. A range of physicochemical methods are used for pre- and post-treatment, but biological secondary remediation remains the most popular choice for the reduction of the organic and macronutrient fraction of tannery effluent. This review provides an update and critical discussion of biological systems used to remediate tannery effluent. While the conventional activated sludge process and similar technologies are widely used by tanneries, they have inherent problems related to poor sludge settling, low removal efficiencies, and high energy requirements. Treatment wetlands are recommended for the passive polishing step of beamhouse effluent. Hybrid systems that incorporate anoxic and/or anaerobic zones with sludge and/or effluent recycling have been shown to be effective for the removal of organics and nitrogenous species at laboratory scale, and some have been piloted. Novel systems have also been proposed for the removal and recovery of elemental sulfur and/or energy and/or process water in support of a circular economy. Full-scale studies showing successful long-term operation of such systems are now required to convince tanneries to modernize and invest in new infrastructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study analyses the performance of a pilot plant using a rotating hollow fibre (HF) membrane bioreactor system. The experiments evaluated the effect of operational parameters such as rotational speed, aeration strategies, and maintenance cleaning (MC) procedures on the efficiency of the system, in particular transmembrane pressure (TMP) and filtrate quality. The results indicate that the rotating membrane module reduces TMP increase and can operate for 48 days with satisfactory performance, even without aeration. This has the potential to significantly improve efficiency, resulting in significant energy savings. In addition, two MC methods, clean in air and clean in place, were tested and found to be efficient for weekly MC. It was observed that operating without aeration during colder seasons may not be effective. Therefore, adaptive strategies are needed to address seasonal temperature variations. The hybrid membrane bioreactor introduces suspended biofilm carriers into the membrane bioreactor (MBR). The microbial diversity and content with the functions of carbon reduction, nitrogen removal and phosphorus accumulation were analyzed under the optimal conditions respectively to investigate the reasons and the mechanism for the differences in decontamination efficiency between HMBR and MBR through high-throughput sequencing and related analysis software. Results showed that HMBR had better pollution removal performance than MBR, and the pollutant degradation mechanisms of MBR and HMBR were different. HMBR had more active microbial communities, which were with richer species, more evenly distributed, and larger quantities. And at the same time, relevant functional bacteria were more obviously presented in HMBR, especially the addition of suspended filler brought extra increment of functional bacteria, which promoted HMBR with better pollution removal performance.

Influences of upstream wastewater treatment on the process combination of granular activated carbon (GAC) and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection were studied and the implications of this for wastewater reuse were assessed. GAC is an efficient chemical barrier but contributes little to the removal of indicator bacteria, and generally increases total bacteria concentrations, necessitating disinfection with UV radiation, for example, to ensure the safe reuse of wastewater. The efficiency of UV disinfection is impacted by factors such as particle concentration and UV absorbance of the water and is thus affected by upstream treatment processes. A full-scale wastewater treatment plant with a membrane bioreactor (MBR) followed by GAC filtration was compared to a treatment plant with a conventional activated sludge process and sand filtration, followed by GAC filtration. The removal of indicator bacteria was higher by the GAC filter that was preceded by an MBR. A UV fluence of 400 J/m2 was sufficient to reach irrigation water quality for both process combinations and to meet the criteria for microbial drinking water quality in the MBR + GAC effluent. One sample was selected for chemical analysis, comprising approximately 100 parameters, demonstrating that the MBR + GAC + UV (400 J/m2) effluent met all drinking water criteria except for nitrate levels. Abstract Decentralized wastewater reclamation and reuse systems have drawn much attention due to their capability for reducing the energy demand for water conveyance and reclaiming wastewater for local re-use. While membrane bioreactor (MBR) stands as a mature technology offering comprehensive solid and liquid separation, membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) presents a promising avenue for ion separation. Unfortunately, MCDI has seldom been incorporated into decentralized wastewater reclamation and reuse systems. This study aims to exemplify the design and the operation of the synergistic integration of MBR and MCDI system with a practical capacity of 1 m3 d− 1, showcasing its efficacy in reclaiming and reusing water at regional level. The integrated system demonstrated significant high removal of total organic carbon (from 97 to 2 mg L− 1) and chemical oxygen demand (COD, from 218 to 92% TN removal). A significant milestone of MCDI unit was reached with the remarkable removal efficiency of total ions (93%) and water recovery (80%) using a stop-flow regeneration approach coupled with an optimized voltage of 2.0 V. The MCDI unit not only proved its high stability but also featured low energy consumption (0.44 kWh m− 3). Overall, synergizing MBR and MCDI systems emerges as a sustainable and effective solution for decentralized wastewater reclamation and reuse, contributing to a more environmentally friendly and resource-efficient water management paradigm.

In this work, microalgae cultivation trials were carried out in a membrane bioreactor to investigate fouling when the cultures of Chlorellavulgaris were grown under mixotrophic, heterotrophic, and phototrophic cultivation regimes. The Chlorella cultures were cultivated in wastewater as a source of nutrients that contained a high concentration of ammonium. In mixotrophic cultivation trials, the results showed that the elevated contents of carbohydrates in the soluble microbial product and proteins in extracellular polymeric substances probably initiated membrane fouling. In this case, the highest protein content was also found in extracellular polymeric substances due to the high nitrogen removal rate. Consequently, transmembrane pressure significantly increased compared to the phototrophic and heterotrophic regimes. The data indicated that cake resistance was the main cause of fouling in all cultivations. Higher protein content in the cake layer made the membrane surface more hydrophobic, while carbohydrates had the opposite effect. Compared to a mixotrophic culture, a phototrophic culture had a larger cell size and higher hydrophobicity, leading to less membrane fouling. Based on our previous data, the highest ammonia removal rate was reached in the mixotrophic cultures; nevertheless, membrane fouling appeared to be the fundamental problem. Electrochemical membrane bioreactor(EMBR) is an emerging technology for wastewater treatment. In addition to efficient removal of conventional pollutants, the EMBR has significant advantages in removing micropollutants and pathogenic microbes, alleviating the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes, controlling membrane fouling and recovering bioenergy and resources, etc. This paper reviews the principle and characteristics of the EMBR,wastewater treatment efficiency, energy and resource recovery, membrane fouling control and technical challenges. In order to promote the industrial application of the EMBR and continuously improve the efficiency of the EMBR for wastewater treatment, it is necessary to develop electrode materials with high conductivity and biocompatibility, and to optimize the reactor configuration and operating conditions in the future research.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) are seen as a promising technology for application in water reuse schemes. However, the evidence base for their potential and efficacy in this regard is fragmented. We draw together this disparate knowledge base to offer a state of the art review of municipal wastewater treatment with AnMBRs and evaluate the technology's potential application for water reuse. Water quality regulations and standards from different regions of the world are used as performance metrics to compare and contrast the treatment performance of pilot and laboratory scale AnMBR systems reported in the literature (n = 50). Findings indicate that under stable operation, AnMBRs have the potential to produce water for agricultural reuse. However, without post-treatment, AnMBRs are incapable of delivering water that meets other non-potable reuse standards across a range of important parameters such as COD, BOD5, NH3-N and TP. Analysis of key operational parameters determine the operation of AnMBR for non-potable reuse purpose cover influent water matrix, pH, temperature, hydraulic retention time, system and membrane configuration. An assessment of candidate post-treatment technologies suggests a tradeoff between the cost and effluent quality based on the reuse application requirement. We conclude by discussing a number of challenges and limitations to the use of AnMBRs for reuse applications in order to outline a pathway to maturity for effective treatment trains. This study aims to integrate a novel bio-purification process employing an engineered E. coli strain in the downstream processing of lactic acid (LA) fermentation broths from low-cost renewable biological feedstocks. Fermentation broth of candy waste and digestate mixture was used as a real biological feedstock. An engineered E. coli strain that selectively catabolize impurities without catabolizing LA was initially adapted on the biological feedstock, followed by shake flask experiments to prove the bio-purification concept. Scale-up and validation in a bench-scale bioreactor followed, before developing a semi-continuous membrane bioreactor (MBR) bio-purification process. The MBR bio-purification was assessed with biological feedstocks which simulated ultrafiltration or nanofiltration permeates. Incomplete removal of impurities and increased fouling was observed in the case of the ultrafiltration permeate. Contrarily, the nanofiltration permeate was successfully treated with MBR bio-purification, since low membrane fouling, 100% maltose and acetic acid removal, and no LA catabolism was achieved. MBR bio-purification as a post-treatment step in the downstream processing of LA was demonstrated as a promising technology for increasing the purity of LA solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quorum quenching (QQ) is an efficient way to mitigate membrane biofouling in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) during wastewater treatment. A QQ bacterium, Lysinibacillus sp. A4, was isolated and used to mitigate biofouling in an MBR during the treatment of wastewater containing metals. A QQ enzyme (named AilY) was cloned from A4 and identified as a metallo-β-lactamase-like lactonase. The QQ activity of A4 and that of Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) overexpressing AilY could be promoted by Fe2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+ while remaining unaffected by other metals tested. The two bacteria effectively mitigated biofouling by reducing the transmembrane pressure from around 30 to 20 kPa without negative influence on the COD, NH4+-N, or total phosphorus of the effluent. The relative abundance of Lysinibacillus sp. A4 increased greatly from 0.04 to 8.29% in the MBR with metal-containing wastewater, suggesting that Lysinibacillus sp. A4 could multiply quickly and adapt to this environment. Taken together, the findings suggested that A4 could tolerate metal to a certain degree, and this property could allow A4 to adapt well to metal-containing wastewater, making it a valuable strain for mitigating biofouling in MBR during the treatment of metal-containing wastewater. MBRs (Membrane bioreactors) have been increasingly employed for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment in the last decades for their small footprint and excellent effluent quality. However, microorganisms are often detected in the permeates of microfiltration (MF) membranes even with small pore sizes. Coliform bacteria are known for indicating the potential presence of pathogenic bacteria that cause infectious disease such as bacteremia, respiratory tract infections, and urinary tract infections. Thus, the retention of coliform bacteria by membrane processes is important when the membrane process is utilized in water reclamation. In this study, a microbial community of coliform bacteria in the permeates of MF membranes with different pore sizes (0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 µm) was identified. The results showed that the dominant coliform bacteria changed from Enterobacter spp. and Citrobacter spp. in the activated sludge to Enterobacter spp. and Klebsiella spp. in the permeate of MF membranes, while some pieces of membranes showed complete retention. The bacterial regrowth on the surface of the piping system on the permeate side could be a significant factor contributing to the frequent and exclusive detection of Enterobacter spp. and Klebsiella spp. in the case of membranes with small pore size (0.2 and 0.4 µm) after a long continuous filtration time. To indicate the public health-related risk of treated wastewater by MF, Escherichia coli may not be a suitable indicator species because E. coli is relatively retentive in MF compared to other coliforms. Ensuring the effluent quality despite fluctuations in influent flow rate and organic load to municipal wastewater treatment plants is critical. This study investigated the performance of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) in handling hydraulic and organic loading shocks during wastewater treatment. The ability of the MBR to remove COD, BOD5, and turbidity from synthetic wastewater was evaluated at steady-state and after applying five levels of organic shock loads (1.5×-4×) and four levels of hydraulic shocks (1.2×-4.7×). Due to the short-term shock-loadings no discernible effect was observed on the mixed liquor suspended solids implying biological stability. The average COD removal in MBR exposed to organic and hydraulic shock loads was 93.8% and 94%, respectively, similar to average BOD5 removals of 94.4% and 93.6%. The membrane retained suspended particles well throughout the process. However, it became quickly fouled only by applying a strong hydraulic shock. The MBR guaranteed the quality of the effluent. BACKGROUND: Bioethanol is considered a highly promising alternative to fossil fuels due to its derivation from renewable sources. Reducing the disadvantages of conventional fermentation requires removing the product from the fermentation broth after its formation. Therefore, coupling the membrane separation with a biological process in a single unit leads a reduction of substrate and product inhibitions. RESULTS: In this work, bioethanol production was investigated in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) with sugarcane bagasse (lignocellulose waste) as a renewable source by the sulfuric acid hydrolysis process. Firstly, the optimum conditions to produce the maximum amount of sugar by acid hydrolysis were determined. Second, the membrane bioreactor and pervaporation unit equipped with poly(dimethyl siloxane) carbon nanotube/Tetrazole membrane (PDMS‐CNT/Tetrazole) was fabricated. Third, bioethanol production in a conventional batch reactor (CBR) and the novel MBR was implemented. The outcomes of the two kinds of reactors were then compared. The results illustrated that the optimum conditions for acid hydrolysis are at a temperature of 199.4 °C, an operation time of 30.77 min, and an acid concentration of 1.12%. The obtained data shows that the ethanol production in MBR was increased by 103.6% over conventional fermentation. Furthermore, the pervaporated ethanol concentration was higher than that of the broth because of the high membrane selectivity, where a maximum ethanol concentration of 165.7 g L−1 in the cold trap was achieved. Membrane bioreactors (MBR) have become prevalent in wastewater treatment because of their high effluent quality and low sludge generation. Sludge retention time (SRT) is an important parameter in the operation of MBR, and it has a direct effect on the microbial community. In this study, microarrays were used to analyze the microbial communities of three different MBRs at short SRTs. The results showed that MBR at SRT 5 days (CS5) has the highest operational taxonomic units (OTUs) richness, but the lowest diversity and uniformity compared to SRT 3 days at continuous CS3 and the sequencing batch (SS3). Proteobacteria were the dominant phylum of three reactors. Bacteroidetes were the second dominant phylum in MBRs at the continuous model, instead of Actinobacteria at the sequencing model. At the class level, the dominant group of Proteobacteria exhibited a remarkable difference between the three MBRs. γ-Proteobacteria was the dominant group in CS5 and CS3, while α-Proteobacteria was the main group in SS3. The samples from the three MBRs had similar compositions of α-, β- and δ-Proteobacteria. However, γ-Proteobacteria showed different community compositions at the order level between the three MBRs. Enterobacteriales were the dominant group in CS5 and CS3, while Pseudomonadales were the dominant group in SS3. The bacterial community concentration of SRT 5 days was generally higher than that of the other two MBRs. The community composition of CS5 was significantly different from that of CS3 and SS3, and the phylogenetic relationships of the three MBRs were relatively different.

Abstract Background A potential alternative to lactic acid production through sugar fermentation is its recovery from grass silage leachate. The separation and purification of lactic acid from fermentation broths remain a key issue, as it amounts to up to 80% of its industrial production cost. In this study, a genetically engineered E. coli strain (A1:ldhA), that cannot catabolize lactic acid, has been used to selectively remove impurities from a synthetic medium comprising typical components (i.e., glucose and acetic acid) of green grass silage leachate. A systematic approach has been followed to provide a proof-of-concept for a bio-purification process of lactic acid solutions in a membrane bioreactor operating in semi-continuous mode. Results The synthetic medium composition was initially optimized in shake-flasks experiments, followed by scale-up in bench-scale bioreactor. Complete (i.e., 100%) and 60.4% removal for glucose and acetic acid, respectively, has been achieved in batch bioreactor experiments with a synthetic medium comprising 0.5 g/L glucose and 0.5 g/L acetic acid as carbon sources, and 10 g/L lactic acid; no lactic acid catabolism was observed in all batch fermentation tests. Afterwards, a hybrid biotechnological process combining semi-continuous bioreactor fermentation and ultrafiltration membrane separation (membrane bioreactor) was applied to in-situ separate purified medium from the active cells. The process was assessed under different semi-continuous operating conditions, resulting in a bacteria-free effluent and 100% glucose and acetic acid depletion, with no lactic acid catabolism, thus increasing the purity of the synthetic lactic acid solution. Conclusions The study clearly demonstrated that a bio-purification process for lactic acid employing the engineered E. coli strain cultivated in a membrane bioreactor is a technically feasible concept, paving the way for further technological advancement.

Wastewater treatment has become widely recognized as a highly efficient approach for tackling the pressing issue of limited access to clean water, which is anticipated to give rise to a global crisis in the foreseeable future. This highlights the need to pay close attention to Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology, which has emerged as a promising solution for industrial wastewater treatment because of its efficiency and exceptional capability to provide high-quality treated water, especially in developing countries. As industrialization accelerates in these regions, the management and treatment of industrial wastewater present pressing environmental and public health challenges. MBR technology, a combination of membrane filtration and biological treatment, offers a viable solution with distinct advantages, such as enhanced treatment efficiency, smaller footprint, reduced chemical usage, and water reuse potential. This review comprehensively examines MBR technology as a novel and transformative approach to industrial wastewater treatment in developing countries. Some key findings suggest that addressing the challenge of membrane fouling by employing strategies such as selecting appropriate membranes based on specific wastewater characteristics and implementing membrane backwashing and chemical cleaning can extend membrane life and improve performance. The operational success of the Membrane Reactor Technology rests on continuous optimization and control of parameters like Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) concentration and aeration rates, which can maximize treatment efficiency and minimize energy usage. The provision of training for skilled operation and routine maintenance is crucial. The study indicates that successful country-level technology implementation depends on understanding the specific characteristics of local wastewater hydraulic conditions and implementing appropriate pretreatment processes to avoid clogging. Stakeholder collaboration and knowledge sharing are essential for overcoming costs, technical expertise, energy consumption, and regulatory compliance barriers. Further, efforts from governments, industries, and international organizations are necessary to effectively deploy MBR technology, thereby minimizing the environmental impact of industrialization and supporting sustainable development in developing countries.

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) is an advanced wastewater treatment technology, which has been established for more than 3 decades. In MBRs, membrane separation allows not only rejecting microorganisms/greater-sized molecules but decoupling hydraulic retention time (HRT) and solid retention time (SRT). Low-pressure driven, porous membranes have been widely used in MBRs, but their performances are mainly limited for wastewater reuse applications. Recently, many attempts have been made to combine desalination technologies to advance hybrid MBR processes for wastewater reclamation. Nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) have been applied with the MBRs to improve effluent quality, and their advantages and challenges have been well reported in terms of rejection efficiency, operational energy, fouling control and recovery of retentate stream. Alternatively, the direct introduction of nonpressurized desalination technologies such as forward osmosis (FO) and membrane distillation (MD) into MBR processes for wastewater reclamation or probably for microbial activity have been considered substantially due to their low energy consumption and excellent rejection efficiency of solid materials. However, several technical limitations still need to be resolved to commercialize hybrid FO- or MD-MBR processes. This paper reviews recent advances of MBR technology integrated with desalination technologies for wastewater reclamation and suggests perspectives to optimize membranebased hybrid MBR process. Anaerobic succinate fermentations can achieve high-titer, high-yield performance while fixing CO2 through the reductive branch of the tricarboxylic acid cycle. To provide the needed CO2, conventional media is supplemented with significant (up to 60 g/L) bicarbonate (HCO3−), and/or carbonate (CO32−) salts. However, producing these salts from CO2 and natural ores is thermodynamically unfavorable and, thus, energetically costly, which reduces the overall sustainability of the process. Here, a series of composite hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) were first fabricated, after which comprehensive CO2 mass transfer measurements were performed under cell-free conditions using a novel, constant-pH method. Lumen pressure and total HFM surface area were found to be linearly correlated with the flux and volumetric rate of CO2 delivery, respectively. Novel HFM bioreactors were then constructed and used to comprehensively investigate the effects of modulating the CO2 delivery rate on succinate fermentations by engineered Escherichia coli. Through appropriate tuning of the design and operating conditions, it was ultimately possible to produce up to 64.5 g/L succinate at a glucose yield of 0.68 g/g; performance approaching that of control fermentations with directly added HCO3−/CO32− salts and on par with prior studies. HFMs were further found to demonstrate a high potential for repeated reuse. Overall, HFM-based CO2 delivery represents a viable alternative to the addition of HCO3−/CO32− salts to succinate fermentations, and likely other 'dark' CO2-fixing fermentations. The aim of this study is to model a hydrogenotrophic denitrification process in a venturi-integrated submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) system. The MBR was operated in batch mode using feed concentrations of 100 and 150 mg NO3-N/L. In contrast to most of the denitrification process models that represent the mixed culture with one composite biomass parameter, the biomass was subdivided into two main categories in this modelling study: mainly nitrate-reducing biomass and mainly nitrite-reducing biomass. The determination coefficients (r2) in the range of 0.97–0.99 indicate that the model successfully simulates the concentrations of nitrate- and nitrite-nitrogen in the bioreactor. The maximum specific growth rate of nitrite-reducing biomass (0.06 h−1) was found to be higher than that of nitrate-reducing biomass (0.0002 h−1). Similarly, the growth yield coefficient of nitrite-reducing biomass was higher than that of nitrate-reducing biomass (0.44 vs. 0.31 g biomass/g substrate). The kinetic and stoichiometric coefficients obtained from this modelling study suggest that the limiting step determining the overall conversion rate of hydrogenotrophic denitrification process is the conversion of nitrite to nitrogen gas. This study proposed the design, fabrication, and assembly of membrane integrity detection instruments in membrane bioreactors (MBR) based on fluorescence spectroscopy. Based on the PARAFAC model, we found that the peak at 280/335 nm strengthened after membrane breakage. The peak at 340/430 nm reflected the sludge concentration in the MBR and reduced the influence of internal filtration effects on detection. Therefore, we determined that the dual-LED light source excitation detection system can detect tryptophan-like substances at 280 nm (T-peak) and humic acid at 340 nm (C-peak). T-peak was identified as the core index indicating membrane integrity. Moreover, the C-peak is the reference indicator factor for a sensitive response to changes in the sludge concentration. The portable fluorescence instrument exhibited high sensitivity and good feedback accuracy compared to particle counting and turbidity detection, where the log reduction value was greater than 3.5. This overcomes the disadvantage of false alarms in particle counters and is not affected by the position of the pump system. This portable instrument provides a flexible and highly sensitive method for the assessment of industrial membrane integrity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The global concern regarding the release of micropollutants (MPs) into the environment has grown significantly. Considerable amounts of persistent micropollutants are present in industrial discharges. Depending solely on a singular treatment approach is inadequate for the effective removal of MPs from wastewater due to their complex composition. The performance of different treatment methods to meet the discharge standards has been widely studied. These efforts are classified as hybrid and sequential processes. Despite their adequate performance, the optimization and industrial application of these methods could be challenging and costly. This review focuses on integrated (sequential) and hybrid processes for MP removal from actual wastewater. Furthermore, to provide a thorough grasp of the treatment approaches, the operational conditions, the source of wastewater containing MPs, and its characteristics are detailed. It is concluded that the optimal sequence to achieve the removal of MPs involves biological treatment followed by an advanced oxidation process (AOP) with a final passage through an activated carbon column. To refine this process further, a membrane unit could be added based on the desired effluent quality. Nevertheless, considering practical feasibility, this study identifies specific areas requiring additional research to implement this integrated treatment strategy effectively. This study investigates the design, configuration, and optimization of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) system for the amelioration of industrial effluent. The study focuses on mitigating membrane fouling and reusing the treated wastewater. The MBR system is designed and configured with different operating parameters, including nano-bubble technology and hydraulic retention time (HRT), to optimize the removal efficiency of pollutants. The effect of HRT on the percentage elimination of pollutants in the wastewater treated by MBR systems is investigated, and the dynamic relationship between the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) and HRT is studied to optimize the biological treatment process. The relationship between permeate flux and temperature is also investigated to optimize the operational conditions of MBR systems. Trans-membrane pressure monitoring and cleaning techniques are employed to mitigate membrane fouling in MBR systems. It is assessed if it is feasible to reuse the treated wastewater for commercial purposes. According to the data, the MBR system with nano-bubble technology and a 12-h HRT had the best pollution removal effectiveness (97.5%). It was discovered that the dynamic link between MLSS and HRT was crucial for optimising the biological treatment procedure, and that 25°C was the ideal temperature for MBR operation. The treated wastewater was found to be suitable for reuse in industrial applications, and the trans-membrane pressure monitoring and cleaning approaches were successful in reducing membrane fouling. With the potential to improve both the environment and the economy, the study's findings offer important insights into the design of long-term, sustainable MBR systems for the treatment of industrial wastewater. In the current study, braid reinforced membranes were fabricated from polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymers with two different molecular weights, and the blending of the polymers in a 1:1 ratio to upgrade the performance of the membrane. Characterization, filtration studies, and membrane bioreactor (MBR) application were done to evaluate membrane performance by applying the same operation conditions on each membrane. Characterization studies indicated that the fabricated membrane from blending polymers was a hydrophilic structure with a contact angle of 50.78° and smoother surface properties compared to the other fabricated membranes. According to the MBR results, at the end of the operation process, TMP levels of the membrane from the blending method are found 150 mbar, membrane from high molecular weight PVDF polymer had 250 mbar, and membrane from low molecular weight PVDF polymer had 800 mbar. As a consequence of the investigation, it is seen that the hydrophilic structure of the membrane allows the pollutant to adsorb less to the blend membrane surface, and the lower roughness is also a factor in reducing fouling. Sustainable operation is an essential challenge in many municipal wastewater treatment plants. Among many types of wastewater mixed in a sewer, healthcare wastewaters need special attention due to their hazardous substance content, which can be toxic to activated sludge. This study compared the acute inhibitory effects of healthcare wastewaters (HW) and medical laboratory wastewater (MLW) on conventional activated sludge (CAS) and membrane bioreactor (MBR). The sensitivity test showed that nitrifying bacteria (NBs) in MBR sludge have higher resistance to acute toxicity than the CAS. Compared with HW, MLW caused much higher inhibition on both sludges. When the ratio of HW in the tested domestic wastewater was 10%, inhibition of NBs was 39% in AS, while it was 31% in MBR. When the ratio of MLW in the tested domestic wastewater was only 10%, 72% of NBs in AS and 57% of NBs in MBR were already inhibited. The higher resistance of NB in MBR may be explained by the diversity of microorganisms in the MBR operated at high sludge ages. The findings of this study may be used to estimate the acute inhibition effect of HW and MLW discharged directly to the sewage at higher loads. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study focused on the investigation of the performance of a Moving Bed Bioreactor coupled with a Membrane Bioreactor (MBBR-MBR) on a small scale for textile wastewater treatment. The parameters examined in this study included the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, color, and heavy metals (HM). The two reactors were operated consecutively and maintained aerobic conditions. The idea is to reduce the pollutant load significantly through the activity of microorganism attached to the biofilm covered carriers in MBBR and successive membrane filtration. The system demonstrated a favorable outcome even in a smaller hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1 day, which presents a significant advantage in terms of cost and space saving. The removal effectiveness of COD attained a maximum of 92 %, BOD reached a maximum of 95 %, and the color removal performance obtained a removal efficiency of 87 %. Furthermore, the treatment showed remarkable efficiency in removing up to 100 % of TSS and 96 % of turbidity. Additionally, an evaluation was conducted on the elimination of heavy metals, including Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Chromium (Cr), and Iron (Fe). The efficacy of removing these HMs was found to exceed 85 %. All these favorable outcomes contribute to the improvement of effluent quality, mitigation of contamination hazards, and fouling reduction.

A multitude of tannery wastewater (TWW) is a key challenge for the tanning industry. Developing efficient and new technology is crucial to regulate the disposal of TWW. Many scientists developed a variety of types of membrane bioreactor-based technologies to treat TWW. This study performed a critical review to understand the existing membrane bioreactor-based TWW treatment technologies. The review revealed that many studies tried to understand the removal efficiency of the membrane bioreactor-based technologies for treating TWW. The study findings depicted that scientists tried to develop various types of membrane technologies, i.e., modified membrane bioreactor (MBR), anaerobic MBR, moving bed biofilm bioreactor (MBBR) and hybrid MBBR, osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBBR), hybrid MBR. The MBBR technologies performed better than the existing MBR techniques among the currently employed MBR. The review suggests a set of future research domains for sustainable treatment of TWW by applying MBR. In the future, the research focus could be on the development of novel biocarriers, application of 3D printing and the implementation of process simulation to enhance process efficiency and sustainability. . The review will aid scientists in enhancing their comprehension of the processes associated with different MBR treatment technologies used for treating TWW. This will, in turn, accelerate the advancement of process parameters and techniques.

Ibn Tofail University of Kenitra, Morocco, is committed to a national policy of control and mobilization of water resources and the adoption of a planning approach and integrated water management. Within this framework, the university, which contains 40,000 students, produces a quantity of wastewater of 200 m3 per day. After treatment, the water is used for watering the university’s green space. The treatment process chosen is a membrane bioreactor (MBR), which is considered to be energy intensive. Therefore, the production of energy for the station will be made by renewable energy wind and photovoltaic (PV). The dimensioning of the MBR was made by a research department, which estimated that the energy necessary for the station is 1061.76 kW h/day. The aim of this work is to dimension and optimize the platform for the production of energy, using the Matlab program for the wind turbine and the PVsyst program for PV. The results of coupling our plant with an on-grid PV system and wind turbine show that it was able to reach an electrical coverage of about 72% of the wastewater treatment (WWT) plant’s energy needs. Thus, an estimated reduction of electricity of 0.53 euro on each m3 of water produced by the WWT plant and thus 106.76 euro on the 200 m3 produced daily by the station.

The growing demand for sustainable ruminant feed alternatives has motivated the application of bioconversion approaches for the valorization of agro-food byproducts (AFB) into feed additives and supplements. The present study thoroughly investigated substituting volatile fatty acids (VFAs) obtained from acidogenic fermentation (AF) of AFB as an energy source in ruminant feed. Rumen in vitro digestibility assays were conducted utilizing the gas production method, wherein the VFAs obtained from AF of apple pomace and potato protein liquor was substituted with partial silage and concentrate energy at levels of 10%, 20%, and 30%. The results indicate that substituting 20% of the concentrate’s energy with VFA mixture significantly reduced methane production and had no adverse effect on the production and accumulation of VFAs in the simulated rumen media. Conversely, replacing 10% of the silage energy with VFAs led to a decrease in methane production and further enhanced the production of VFAs. Readily digestible VFAs in ruminant feed have the potential to enhance energy availability and sustainability in ruminant farming practices, aligning with the principles of circular economy and waste valorization.

The persistent presence of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in aquatic environments, particularly via effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), poses significant ecological risks. This study investigated the removal efficiency of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) using a lab-scale aerobic membrane bioreactor (aMBR) equipped with different membrane types: microfiltration (MF), commercial ultrafiltration (c-UF), and recycled ultrafiltration (r-UF) membranes. Performance was assessed using synthetic urban wastewater spiked with PS-NPs, focusing on membrane efficiency, fouling behavior, and microbial community shifts. All aMBR systems achieved high organic matter removal, exceeding a 97% COD reduction in both the control and PS-exposed reactors. While low concentrations of PS-NPs did not significantly impact the sludge settleability or soluble microbial products initially, a higher accumulation increased the carbohydrate concentrations, indicating a protective bacterial response. The microbial community composition also adapted over time under polystyrene stress. All membrane types exhibited substantial NP removal; however, the presence of nano-sized PS particles negatively affected the membrane performance, enhancing the fouling phenomena and increasing transmembrane pressure. Despite this, the r-UF membrane demonstrated comparable efficiency to c-UF, suggesting its potential for sustainable applications. Advanced characterization techniques including pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) were employed for NP detection and quantification.

Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs) are contaminants of emerging concern with marked potential to impact public and environmental health. This review focusses on factors that influence the presence, abundance, and dissemination of ARGs within Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) and associated effluents. Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria (ARB) and ARGs have been detected in the influent and the effluent of WWTPs worldwide. Different levels of wastewater treatment (primary, secondary, and tertiary) show different degrees of removal efficiency of ARGs, with further differences being observed when ARGs are captured as intracellular or extracellular forms. Furthermore, routinely used molecular methodologies such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction or whole genome sequencing may also vary in resistome identification and in quantifying ARG removal efficiencies from WWTP effluents. Additionally, we provide an overview of the One Health risk assessment framework, as well as future strategies on how WWTPs can be assessed for environmental and public health impact.

Despite the outstanding performance of membrane bioreactors (MBRs) in producing excellent quality effluent, they can’t evade fouling. Fouling control in MBRs is continuously requiring scientific and practical investigations. In this research, an MBR system was run in a currently operating, activated sludge, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The influence of hydraulic retention time (HRT), sludge retention time (SRT), and the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) on MBR fouling was studied. The study outlined that increasing MLSS from 5,630 to 8,020 mg/L resulted in flux decline from 12.77 to 10.27 L/m2·h, while at MLSS between 8,790 and 10,930 mg/L there was no clear relationship between MLSS and flux, furthermore, at MLSS > 10,900 mg/L slow flux decline was noticed. Moreover, the study showed that higher HRTs improved sludge settling and reduced the sludge carryover onto the membrane thus decreasing fouling, while short HRTs increase the likelihood of MBR fouling. Additionally, increasing SRT resulted in flux decline due to the increase of MLSS concentration and viscosity, and reduced hydraulic capacity inside the bioreactor. Backwashing resulted in flux increase from 3.93 to 7.6 L/m2·h indicating its effectiveness in fouling control, thus it should be kept on when running the MBR system. Aeration intensities of 480, 720, 960, and 1,200 L/h enhanced flux when compared to 240 L/h (biological requirement), their corresponding cumulative flux increase percentages were 9.5%, 22.35%, 40.69%, and 41.35%, respectively. The optimum aeration intensity for this setup was 960 L/h. The effect of membrane-aerator distance was investigated through using four values (5, 10, 17.5 and 25 cm); the results indicated that the distance of 10 cm produced the highest flux. Granular activate carbon (GAC) was added at doses of 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4 g/L. The study concluded that the optimum GAC dose was 2.5 g/L. Running the system at the optimum values of the previously mentioned parameters and at variable aeration intensities revealed that it was possible to reduce the aeration intensity from 1,200 L/h to 720 to get the same flux, thus indicating 40% aeration reduction.
