Case report: A 53-year-old male patient with chronic (1 year) sciatic nerve injury on left side received OEC transplantation at the lesion site. He received follow-up assessment according to the American Spinal Injury Association standard at 10 days, 6 months, and 1 year after OEC therapy. The muscle strength of his left lower limb increased and numbness decreased during the early stage of cell therapy. His motor function improved with each evaluation. His limp walking gait recovered, and numbness sensation got nearly normal after 1 year of follow-up. There were no side effects. Conclusion: OEC transplantation may be an option for chronic peripheral (sciatic) nerve injury. Compound pollution at industrial sites impedes urban development, especially when there is a lack of understanding about the spatial variations of internal pollution in industrial areas producing light-weight materials. In this study, spatial distribution and ecological risks of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and petroleum hydrocarbons (C10-40) in the soil and groundwater of an Al/Cu (aluminum/copper) industrial site have been analyzed comprehensively. Results revealed the progressive clustering of pollutants in different soil layers, which indicated varying levels of penetration and migration of pollutants from the surface downward. Furthermore, severity of pollution varied according to pollutant type, with Cu (5-10,228 mg kg -1 ) often exceeding the background levels significantly (>40). Cd (0.03-2.60 mg kg -1 ) and Hg (0.01-3.73 mg kg -1 ) were found at elevated concentrations in deeper soil layers, suggesting distinct variations of PTEs across different soil depths. Among the more hazardous VOCS, polychlorinated biphenyls (1.80-234 μg kg -1 ) were particularly prevalent in the deeper layers of soil. Petroleum hydrocarbons (C10-40) were widely detected (6-582 mg kg -1 ), showing significant migration potential from surface to deep soil. These findings suggest that prolonged industrial activities lead to deep-seated accumulation of pollutants, which also impacts the groundwater, contributing to long-term dispersion of contaminants. Furthermore, multivariate statistical analysis indicated certain positive correlations among the distribution of Cu, Pb and petroleum hydrocarbons, indicating possible coupling of these pollutants. Severe Cu pollution caused an ecological risk in the surface soil layer (covering >20 % area of high pollution site, contributing >40 % ecological risk). While the Hg and Cd posed significant risks in the deeper soil layers, showing higher risk coefficients and mobility. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are an important component of innate immunity in both vertebrates and invertebrates, and some of the unique characteristics of AMPs are usually associated with their living environment. The marine fish, mudskipper Boleophthalmus pectinirostris, usually live amphibiously in intertidal environments that are quite different from other fish species, which would be an exceptional source of new AMPs. In the study, an AMP named Bolespleenin 334-347 was identified, which was a truncated peptide derived from a new functional gene found in B. pectinirostris, that was up-regulated in response to bacterial challenge. Bolespleenin 334-347 had only 14 amino acid residues, including five consecutive arginine residues. It was found that the peptide had broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, good thermal stability and sodium ion tolerance. Bolespleenin 334-347 killed Acinetobacter baumannii and Staphylococcus aureus by disrupting the structural integrity of the bacterial membrane, leading to leakage of the cellular contents, and inducing accumulation of bacterial endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition, Bolespleenin 334-347 effectively inhibited biofilm formation of A. baumannii and S. aureus and long-term treatment did not lead to the development of resistance. Importantly, Bolespleenin 334-347 maintained stable activity against clinically multi-drug resistant bacterial strains. In addition, it was noteworthy that Bolespleenin 334-347 showed superior efficacy to LL-37 and vancomycin in a constructed mouse model of MRSA-induced superficial skin infections, as evidenced by a significant reduction in bacterial load and more favorable wound healing. Neonicotinoids are widely used insecticides that have raised considerable concerns for both environmental and human health. However, there lack of comprehensive evaluation of their accumulation in surface water ecosystems and exposure to various human groups. Additionally, there's a distinct lack of scientific evidence describing the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic impacts of neonicotinoids from surface water. Using an integrated approach employing the Relative Potency Factor (RPF), Hazard Index (HI), and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS), the study assessed neonicotinoid exposure and risk to four demographic groups via dermal contact and mistaken oral intake pathways in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB), China. Neonicotinoid concentrations range from 0.1 to 408.12 ng/L, indicating potential risk (10 -3 to 10 -1 ) across the studied demographic groups. The Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) for dermal contact was within a moderate range of 2.00 × 10 -3 to 1.67 × 10 -2 , while the mistaken oral intake was also within a moderate range of 3.07 × 10 -3 to 7.05 × 10 -3 . The Hazard Index (HI) for dermal exposure ranged from 1.49 × 10 -2 to 0.125, while for mistaken oral intake, it varied between 2.69 × 10 -2 and 0.14. The findings highlight the importance of implementing specific interventions to address neonicotinoid exposure, especially among demographic groups that are more susceptible. Commercial chemicals, such as synthetic musks, are of global concern, but data on their occurrence and spatial distribution in aquatic environments of large scale are scarce. Two sampling campaigns were conducted in the present study to measure freely dissolved synthetic musks in freshwaters across China using passive samplers, along with biological coexposure at selected sites. Polycyclic musks (PCMs) dominated synthetic musks, with a detection frequency of 95%. Higher concentrations of PCMs were observed in densely populated Mid, East, and South China compared to less populated regions, indicating the significance of anthropogenic activities for synthetic musks in water. The concentration ratios of galaxolide (HHCB)/tonalide (AHTN) were significantly higher in low-latitude areas than in high-latitude areas from June to September, suggesting that solar radiation played an important role in the degradation of HHCB/AHTN. Significant correlations were found between dissolved concentrations of HHCB and AHTN and their lipid-normalized concentrations in coexposed fish and clam. The estimated hazard quotients for HHCB and AHTN in freshwater fish consumed by humans were less than 0.01 at all sampling sites except the Yangtze River Basin. These results help to understand the environmental fate and ecological risks of synthetic musks on a large geographical scale.

Objectives: Ovarian cancer (OC) can occur at different ages and is affected by a variety of factors. In order to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular mortality in patients with ovarian cancer, we included influencing factors including age, histological type, surgical method, chemotherapy, whether distant metastasis, race and developed a nomogram to evaluate the ability to predict occurrence. At present, we have not found any correlation studies on cardiovascular death events in patients with ovarian cancer. This study was designed to provide targeted measures for effective prevention of cardiovascular death in patients with ovarian cancer., Methods: Kaplan-Meier analysis and multivariable Cox proportional model were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of cardiovascular diseases on overall survival (OS) and ovarian cancer-specific survival (OCSS). We compared multiple groups including clinical, demographic, therapeutic characteristics and histological types. Cox risk regression analysis, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, and propensity score matching were employed for analyzing the data., Results: A total of 88,653 ovarian cancer patients were collected, of which 2,282 (2.57%) patients died due to cardiovascular-related diseases. Age, chemotherapy and whether satisfactory cytoreduction surgery is still the most important factors affecting the prognosis of ovarian cancer patients, while different histological types, diagnosis time, and race also have a certain impact on the prognosis. The newly developed nomogram model showed excellent predictive performance, with a C-index of 0.759 (95%CI: 0.757-0.761) for the group. Elderly patients with ovarian cancer are still a high-risk group for cardiovascular death [HR: 21.07 (95%CI: 5.21-85.30), p < 0.001]. The calibration curve showed good agreement from predicted survival probabilities to actual observations., Conclusion: This study found that age, histology, surgery, race, chemotherapy, and tumor metastasis are independent prognostic factors for cardiovascular death in patients with ovarian cancer. The nomogram-based model can accurately predict the OS of ovarian cancer patients. Colony formation is a crucial characteristic of Microcystis, a cyanobacterium known for causing cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs). It has been observed that as Microcystis colonies grow larger, they often become less densely packed, which correlates with a decrease in light penetration. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of light limitation on the morphological variations in Microcystis, particularly in relation to the crowded cellular environment. The results indicated that when there was sufficient light (transmittance = 100 %) to support a growth rate of 0.11±0.01 day -1 , a significant increase in colony size was found, from 466±15 μm to 1030±111 μm. However, under light limitation (transmittance = 50 % - 1 %) where the growth rate was lower than 0, there was no significant improvement in colony size. Microcystis in the light limitation groups exhibited a loose cell arrangement and even the presence of holes or pores within the colony, confirming the negative correlation between colony size and cell arrangement. This pattern is driven by regional differences in growth within the colony, as internal cells have a significantly lower frequency of division compared to peripheral cells, due to intra-colony self-shading (ICSS). The research demonstrates that Microcystis can adjust its cell arrangement to avoid excessive self-shading, which has implications for predicting and controlling cyanoHABs. Neonicotinoids (NNIs) constitute commonly used pesticides across various regions, however, the lack of research and data on its long-term effects and threshold levels within specific ecosystems have left an important knowledge gap. This study aimed to comprehensively examine NNI concentrations and their potential impacts on human health and aquatic organisms in the region of the Yangtze River Basin (YRB). The study employed datasets on seven commonly applied NNIs across 244 surface water samples collected from 12 distinct geographic sites within the YRB. The relative potency factor was used to evaluate human exposure risks, while the species sensitivity distribution could estimate acute and chronic hazardous concentrations for 5% of species (HC5) for NNIs impacting aquatic organisms. Analysis revealed varying NNI concentrations across the sampled sites, with thiacloprid recording the lowest concentration at 0.1 ng L -1 , and dinotefuran recording a high concentration of 408 ng L -1 . The observation indicated NNI concentration declined at sampling sites downstream of the YRB. Infants were identified as the most vulnerable to NNI exposure, with an estimated daily intake of 40.8 ng kg -1 bw d -1 . The acute HC5 was determined at 946 ng L -1 and a chronic HC5 at 338 ng L -1 , to NNI hazards. These findings highlight the urgent need for a more comprehensive understanding of the ecological implications and hazards posed by NNIs within the YRB. The aim of this study was to examine microplastic (size distribution of 0.05-5 mm) occurrence and distribution in drinking water source of XJ River during both flooding and dry periods. Surface water and sediment samples were collected from the CS City section of the river in August and December 2020. During the flooding period, microplastic abundances were observed at 0.72-18.6 (7.32 ± 2.36) items L -1 in surface water and 26.3-302 (150 ± 75.6) items kg -1 dry weight (dw) in sediment. In the dry period, abundances were slightly higher at 2.88-17.7 (11.0 ± 3.08) items L -1 and 27.0-651 (249 ± 182) items kg -1 dw, respectively. Microplastics were found in higher concentrations in urban areas and downstream of wastewater treatment plants, suggesting anthropogenic sources. The diversity in shapes, colors, and types of microplastics in surface waters and sediments indicates specialized enrichment processes and persistent sources of microplastic pollution. Approximately 60 % of the microplastic particles identified fall within the 50-100 μm range. Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between these smaller-sized particles and the overall prevalence of microplastics. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the microplastics had been subjected to weathering in the environment, contributing to the production of oxygen-containing functional groups and surface cleavage features. The utilization of energy dispersive spectroscopy revealed the presence of microplastics associated with various heavy metals, highlighting the intricate nature of microplastic pollution. Moreover, the high abundance of microplastics may pose a potential ecological risk to the aquatic environment of the XJ River. Objective: This study aims to investigate potential beneficial actions of icariin (ICA) on testicular spermatogenic function in male rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Background: ICA was found to reduce blood glucose, regulate the endocrine function of the reproductive system, and improve testicular spermatogenic function., Methods: Adult rats were intraperitoneally injected with STZ (65 mg/kg) to induce type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Diabetic rats were randomly classified intoT1DM ( n = 6) and T1DM + ICA ( n = 6) groups. Rats without STZ and ICA treatment were assigned as control group ( n = 6). The morphology of testicular tissues was examined by histological staining. The mRNA and protein expression levels were determined by quantitative real-time PCR, Western blot and immunostaining, respectively., Results: Rats from T1DM group showed a reduction in epididymis and testis weight, and a decrease in sperm count when compared to control group ( p < 0.01), which was attenuated by ICA treatment ( p < 0.05) Diabetic rats from T1DM group also exhibited reduced diameter and area of seminiferous tubules, along with decreased spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes number when compared to control group ( p < 0.01), which was partially reversed by ICA treatment ( p < 0.05) Rats from T1DM group exhibited down-regulation of PCNA mRNA and protein in the testis when compared to control group ( p < 0.01); while ICA treatment up-regulated PCNA expression in the testis of diabetic rats compared to T1DM group ( p < 0.05). Titanium and its alloys are protected by a compact and stable passive film, which confers resistance to corrosion by the primary halogen chloride (Cl - ) while being less effective against fluoride (F - ). Although researchers have recognized different macroscopic corrosion effects of these halide ions on titanium, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. In this work, the bonding of Cl - /F - with stable passive films was studied in neutral and acidic (pH = 2.3) conditions. The synergistic effect between the interfacial hydrogen bond (HB) structure and halogens on titanium corrosion was first revealed using first-principles calculation and Raman spectroscopy. F - forms more stable halogen-Ti bonds than Cl - , resulting in titanium degradation. The proton combined with F - exhibits a specific synergistic effect, causing corrosion of the passive film. The water hydrogen bond transformation index (HBTI) at the titanium/aqueous interface was 1.88 in an acidic solution containing F - , significantly higher than that in neutral/acid solutions containing Cl - (1.80/1.81) and a neutral solution containing F - (1.81). This work clarifies the structure-activity relationship between HBTI and the destruction of titanium passive films. We propose that the microstructure of the interfacial HB is an undeniable factor in the corrosion of titanium.

As traditional per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are phased out, emerging PFAS are being developed and widely used. However, little is known about their properties, including persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity (PBT). Screening for emerging PFAS relies on available chemical inventory databases. Here, we compiled a database of emerging PFAS obtained from nontargeted analysis and assessed their PBT properties using machine learning models, including qualitative graph attention networks, Insubria PBT Index and quantitative EAS-E Suite, VEGA, and ProTox-II platforms. Totally 282 homologues (21.8% of emerging PFAS) were identified as PBT based on the combined qualitative and quantitative prediction, in which 140 homologues were detected in industrial and nonbiological/biological samples, belong to four categories, i.e. modifications of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids, perfluoroalkane sulfonamido substances, fluorotelomers and modifications of perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids. Approximately 10.1% of prioritized emerging PFAS were matched to chemical vendors and 19.6% to patents. Aqueous film-forming foams and fluorochemical factories are the predominant sources for prioritized emerging PFAS. The database and screening results can update the assessment related to legislative bodies such as the US Toxic Substances Control Act and the Stockholm Convention. Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) are compounds widely used as raw materials in the production of plastics, making them ubiquitous in our daily lives. This results in widespread human exposure and human health hazards. Although efforts have been conducted to evaluate the risk of these compounds in diverse regions around the world, data scattering may mask important trends that could be useful for updating current guidelines and regulations. This study offers a comprehensive global assessment of human exposure levels to these chemicals, considering dietary and nondietary ingestion, and evaluates the associated risk. Overall, the exposure daily intake (EDI) values of phthalates and BPA reported worldwide ranged from 1.11 × 10 -7 to 3 700 µg kg bw -1 d -1 and from 3.00 × 10 -5 to 6.56 µg kg bw -1 d -1 , respectively. Nevertheless, the dose-additive effect of phthalates has been shown to increase the EDI up to 5 100 µg kg bw -1 d -1 , representing a high risk in terms of noncarcinogenic (HQ) and carcinogenic (CR) effects. The worldwide HQ values of phthalates and BPA ranged from 2.25 × 10 -7 to 3.66 and from 2.74 × 10 -7 to 9.72 × 10 -2 , respectively. Meanwhile, a significant number of studies exhibit high CR values for benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). Moreover, DEHP has shown the highest maximum mean CR values for humans in numerous studies, up to 179-fold higher than BBP. Despite mounting evidence of the harmful effects of these chemicals at low-dose exposure on animals and humans, most regulations have not been updated. Environmental pollutants are ubiquitous in our environmental media, resulting in detrimental impacts on both humans and the environment. An evidence-based review, particularly a systematic review and meta-analysis, performs a crucial function in assessing the pollution status of pollutants in environmental media at national and global scales. We selected and thoroughly investigated 76 papers focusing on systematic reviews and meta-analyses of contaminants in environmental media. The need to broaden the scope of studies was observed with an increase in the total number of publications, and there were greater focuses on food safety, water pollution, biological pollution, and environmental risks. Furthermore, this review outlined the fundamental procedures involved in a systematic review and meta-analysis, including literature searching, screening of articles, study quality analysis, data extraction and synthesis, and meta-analysis. A meta-analysis typically comprises fixed- and/or random-effects meta-analysis, identifying and measuring heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis, publication bias, subgroup analysis, and meta-regression. We specifically explored the application of meta-analysis to assess the presence of contaminants in environmental media based on two different pollutant categories, namely, non-biological and biological pollutants. The mean value is commonly utilized to assess the pooled concentration of non-biological pollutants, while the prevalence serves as the effect size of biological pollutants. Additionally, we summarized the innovative applications, frequent misuses, and problems encountered in systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Colonial cyanobacteria have been identified as the primary contributor to the global occurrence of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs), which are further intensified by the presence of "pseudo-persistent" antibiotics. Nevertheless, the impact of antibiotics on the growth and size of colonial cyanobacteria remains unclear. In this study, the response of cyanobacterium Microcystis to varying doses of antibiotics was assessed (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 10, and 50 μg L -1 ) by comparing the unicellular and colonial morphotypes. Interestingly, the morphological structure of cyanobacteria plays a significant role in their reaction to antibiotics. In comparison to the unicellular morphotype, the colonial morphotype exhibited a greater promotion in growth rate (11 %-22 %) to low doses of antibiotics and was less inhibited (-121 %--62 %) under high doses. Furthermore, antibiotics may affect the size of cyanobacterial colonies by disrupting the secretion of algal organic matter, which also exhibited a two-phase pattern. This work sheds light on the significance of methodology research involving both unicellular and colonial cyanobacteria. Future research and lake management should prioritize studying the morphological traits of cyanobacteria under different levels of antibiotic exposure. The implementation of Personal Carbon Trading (PCT) holds promise in facilitating a noteworthy contribution towards the attainment of emissions reduction predicated on consumption patterns and consequently motivating lifestyle modifications. As individual consumption behaviors usually lead to continuous changes in carbon emissions, it is crucial to rethink PCT from a systematic perspective. This review employed a bibliometric analysis of 1423 papers related to PCT, highlighting the key themes of carbon emissions from energy consumption, climate change, and public opinion on policies in the context of PCT. Most of the existing PCT researches focus on theoretical assumptions and public attitudes, while the quantification of carbon emissions and simulation of PCT require further investigation. Furthermore, the concept of Tan Pu Hui is seldom addressed in PCT studies and case analyses. Moreover, there are limited PCT schemes worldwide that can be directly implemented in practice, leading to a scarcity of large-scale, high-participation case studies. To address these gaps, this review proposes a framework to clarify how PCT can stimulate individual emission reductions on the consumption side, comprising two phases, from motivation to behavior and behavior to target. Future endeavors should prioritize the enhancement of the systematic study of the theoretical foundation of PCT, encompassing carbon emissions accounting and policy design, the incorporation of cutting-edge technology, and the reinforcement of integrated policy practice. Hypothesis: Unlike noble metals, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) behavior on Ti is more complicated due to its spontaneously formed oxide film. This film results in sluggish ORR kinetics and tends to be reduced within ORR potential region, causing the weak and multi-reaction coupled current. Though Ti is being used in chemical and biological fields, its ORR research is still underexplored., Experiments: We innovatively employed the modified reactive tip generation-substrate collection (RTG/SC) mode of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) with high efficiency of 97.2 % to quantitatively study the effects of film characteristics, solution environment (pH, anion, dissolved oxygen), and applied potential on the ORR activity and selectivity of Ti. Then, density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) analyses were employed to elucidate its ORR behavior., Findings: On highly reduced Ti, film properties dominate ORR behavior with promoted 4e - selectivity. Rapid film regeneration in alkaline/O 2 -saturated conditions inhibits ORR activity. Besides, ORR is sensitive to anion species in neutral solutions while showing enhanced 4e - reduction in alkaline media. All the improved 4e - selectivities originate from the hydrogen bond/electrostatic stabilization effect, while the decayed ORR activity by Cl - arises from the suppressed O 2 adsorption. Phthalic acid esters (PAEs), a class of typical endocrine disruptors, have received considerable attention due to their widespread applications and adverse effects on biological health. In this study, 30 water samples, along the mainstream of the Yangtze River (YR), were collected from Chongqing (upper stream) to Shanghai (estuary) from May to June in 2019. The total concentrations of 16 targeted PAEs ranged from 0.437 to 20.5 μg/L, with an average of 1.93 μg/L, where dibutyl phthalate (DBP, 0.222-20.2 μg/L), bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, 0.254-7.03 μg/L), and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP, 0.0645-0.621 μg/L) were the most abundant PAEs. According to the pollution level in the YR to assess the ecological risk posed by PAEs, the results showed medium risk level of PAEs in the YR, among which DBP and DEHP posed a high ecological risk to aquatic organisms. Bovine coronavirus (BCoV) is one of the important pathogens that cause calf diarrhea (CD), winter dysentery (WD), and the bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC), and spreads worldwide. An infection of BCoV in cattle can lead to death of young animals, stunted growth, reduced milk production, and milk quality, thus bringing serious economic losses to the bovine industry. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent and control the spread of BCoV. Here, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the prevalence of BCoV in cattle in China before 2022. A total of 57 articles regarding the prevalence of BCoV in cattle in China were collected from five databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, CNKI, VIP, and Wan Fang). Based on the inclusion criteria, a total of 15,838 samples were included, and 6,136 were positive cases. The overall prevalence of BCoV was 30.8%, with the highest prevalence rate (60.5%) identified in South China and the lowest prevalence (15.6%) identified in Central China. We also analyzed other subgroup information, included sampling years, sample sources, detection methods, breeding methods, age, type of cattle, presence of diarrhea, and geographic and climatic factors. The results indicated that BCoV was widely prevalent in China. Among all subgroups, the sample sources, detection methods, breeding methods, and presence or absence of diarrheal might be potential risk factors responsible for BCoV prevalence. The aquatic environment, linked to the sustainable development of human existence and ecological environment, is influenced comprehensively by anthropogenic and natural activities. In light of the continuously low concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) in surface water in plain river networks and the phenomenon of delay in the improvement of surface water quality, this research aims to introduce a method that may be utilized in identifying the critical driving forces of DO in surface water and their lagging characteristics, which will contribute to the assessment and adjustment of water quality drivers and/or policies. The research analyzes a typical small watershed in a river network region of the Yangtze River Delta plain as the study area, collecting 35-year (1986-2020) data on several water quality parameters, decades of anthropogenic activities, and two natural factors. The time series methods of vector autoregressive model, Granger causality tests, forecast error variance decompositions, and impulse response functions (hereinafter referred to as VAR+), which are rarely applied in related research, were employed in this study and proved helpful for screening out pivotal drivers and capturing the lagging responses of DO level to driving forces at each lagged time. Results show that there exists a fluctuating drop in DO level in surface water from 1986 to 2008 and a steady climb from 2008 to 2020, with the lowest DO level being present in 2008. The impulsive perturbations of phosphate fertilizer consumption (PFC), motor vessel number, and precipitation minimally increase DO concentration, while the impulsive perturbation of gross domestic product (GDP) causes the sharpest drop in DO level. With these perturbations, the driving force of PFC persists for approximately seven years, and the driving forces of water temperature, permanent population, and GDP persist for only five years. Giardia duodenum (G. duodenalis) can cause giardiasis and infect a variety of hosts. So far, there have been no detailed data regarding the positive rate of G. duodenalis in cattle in China. Here, a systematic literature review was carried out to investigate the epidemiology of bovine G. duodenalis in China. To perform the meta-analysis, the databases China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Chinese Journal Databases, WanFang Databases, PubMed, and ScienceDirect were employed for screening studies related to the prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle in China. The total prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle was estimated to be 8.00% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.51-11.62). In the age subgroup, the prevalence of G. duodenalis in calves (11.72%; 95% CI: 7.75-17.73) was significantly higher than that in cattle of other age groups. An analysis based on seasons showed that the prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle was higher in summer (9.69%; 95% CI: 2.66-35.30) than that in other seasons. The prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle in 2016 or later was 11.62% (95% CI: 6.49-20.79), which was significantly higher than that before 2016 (3.65%; 95% CI: 2.17-6.12). The highest prevalence of G. duodenalis in cattle was 74.23% (95% CI: 69.76-78.45) recorded in South China. The NOAA's National Center for Environmental Information (https://gis.ncdc.noaa.gov/maps/ncei/cdo/monthly) was used to extract relevant geoclimatic data (latitude, longitude, elevation, temperature, precipitation, humidity, and climate). By analyzing the data of each subgroup, it was shown that age of cattle, sampling year, province, region, temperature, and climate were potential risk factors for giardiasis prevalence in cattle. Based on the analysis of common factors and geographical factors, it is recommended to strengthen effective management measures (e.g., ventilation and disinfection in warm and humid areas) and formulate relevant policies according to local conditions. Breeders should pay more attention to the detection of G. duodenalis in calves, to prevent giardiasis prevalence in cattle of different ages, thereby reducing the economic losses of animal husbandry in China.

Background: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (E. granulosus s.l.) larvae. It is mainly prevalent in western agricultural and pastoral areas in China, seriously affecting the development of public health and animal husbandry., Methods: This study conducted a systematic evaluation and meta-analysis of bovine CE in China in the past 10 years (2011-2020). Five databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, CNKI, Wanfang Data, VIP Chinese Journal Database) were used to collect the relevant references, and finally 77 published articles were obtained., Results: The total prevalence of bovine CE was estimated to be 9.62% during decade, and decreased year by year after reaching its peak in 2014 (18.75%). The highest E. granulosus s.l. infection rate was found in Qinghai province (14.79%). The infection rate of cattle >4 years old (15.84%) was significantly higher than that of other age groups, and cattle raised by grazing was significantly higher than that of other methods (17.00%). In the groups of geographical and climatic factors, the prevalence of CE was higher in regions with high-altitude (20.76%), cold (20.76%) and rainy areas (11.33%)., Conclusion: This study found that old age and grazing were two important factors for the high incidence of bovine CE. Ion adsorption and hydrogen bond (HB) network reconstruction in electric double layer (EDL) have a profound impact on the interface properties. The microstructure in the bulk phase of 1.00-21.30 wt.% Na 2 SO 3 aqueous solutions are investigated by X-ray scattering, confocal Raman spectroscopy, and classical molecular dynamics. The electronic properties of SO 3 2- adsorption and the geometric structure of the HB network in the EDL at the titanium TiO 2 (101) surface are studied by density functional theory (DFT) and classical molecular dynamics. The SO 3 2- strongly weakens the fully hydrogen-bonded water (FHW) and transforms it into partial hydrogen-bonded water (PHW). The HB transformation index (HBTI = PHW/FHW) shows a linear relationship with the mass fraction of Na 2 SO 3 . The TiO b -parallel adsorption configuration of SO 3 2- enhances the ionicity of the O b -Ti 6 bond, resulting in the formation of oxygen vacancies at the titanium passive film surface. Besides, SO 3 2- and Na + are enriched and thermodynamic supersaturated in the inner Helmholtz layer (IHL), and the ions are diluted in the outer Helmholtz layer (OHL). The diffusion coefficient of SO 3 2- and water molecules in EDL decreases seriously, which is easy to causes salt scaling on the surface of titanium passive film. This work provides evidence for the destruction of titanium passive film by SO 3 2- .

Enterocytozoon bieneusi (E. bieneusi) is an important zoonotic microsporidian pathogen that has a variety of hosts. Cattle are reservoir hosts of E. bieneusi, and play an important role in the epidemiology of E. bieneusi. However, no systematic research on the prevalence of E. bieneusi in cattle has been reported. Here, a systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to determine the prevalence of E. bieneusi in cattle. Six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Springlink, Wanfang, CNKI, and VIP) were used for searching for relevant studies. The quantity of E. bieneusi infection in cattle was extracted and subjected to an estimation for the prevalence in cattle by using a random effects model. In total, forty articles from 12 countries were chosen from 524 studies from inception to 1st June 2021. An overall E. bieneusi prevalence (95% CI) in cattle was 12.9% (2566/19,791, 9.0-14.6%). The highest prevalence of E. bieneusi was 17.3% (13.9-20.3) in South America, and the lowest was 6.5% (4.1 - 9.4) in Africa 6.5%. The prevalence of E. bieneusi after 2016 (11.1%) was lower than 2016 and before (12.3%). Cattle aged 3-12 months had a higher prevalence (14.8%) as compared with cattle aged > 12 months (8.2%). The combined prevalence of E. bieneusi in the dairy cattle was 14.4%, which was higher than that in other species. In the subgroup of season, E. bieneusi prevalence in cattle was higher in spring (17.4%) and autumn (19.7%) than in summer (8.5%) and winter (8.5%). E. bieneusi prevalence in naturally grazed cattle was 3.6% and 13.7% in intensively fed cattle. A total of 83 E. bieneusi genotypes were prevalent in cattle, of which 15 genotypes found in the cattle had previously been found in humans. The global prevalence of E. bieneusi in cattle related to geographical and climate variables were evaluated as well. These data indicated that E. bieneusi was ubiquitous in cattle worldwide and carried a potential risk of infection in humans. Thus, the farm managers should provide a scientific mix of nutrients to improve cattle immunity, keep the environment clean, and disinfect regularly. The title compound, C 24 H 19 NO, was obtained via the reaction of (1 E ,2 E )-3-(3-meth-oxy-phen-yl)-1-phenyl-prop-2-en-1-one with ethyl 2-oxo-propano-ate, using NH 4 I as a catalyst. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group I 2/ a . In the mol-ecule, the four rings are not in the same plane, the pyridine ring being inclined to the benzene rings by 17.26 (6), 56.16 (3) and 24.50 (6)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯π inter-actions into a three-dimensional network. To further analyse the inter-molecular inter-actions, a Hirshfeld surface analysis was performed. In Taipu River, after being transformed from a drainage channel to a drinking water supply river in 1995, heavy metals that have accumulated in sediments have become an environmental issue. Herein, we collected sediments of Taipu River in 2018, 2020, and 2021 and analyzed the distribution of Sb, As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, and Zn to identify their sources. The results revealed that the mean concentrations of heavy metals were above the background values, except for Cr and As. During the non-flood season, the midstream of Taipu River becomes a heavy metal hotspot, with their concentrations 2-5 times higher than those in upstream sediment. There were significant correlations (r = 0.79-0.99) among drainage, precipitation and flow rate, which indicated that drainage caused by both the opening of Taipu Gate and precipitation control the flow rate and, then, possibly influenced the distribution of heavy metals. Moreover, three sources (industrial sources, particle deposition sources, and natural sources) were characterized as the determinants for the accumulation of heavy metal by the Positive Matrix Factorization model, with the contribution rates of 41.7%, 32.9%, and 25.4%, respectively. It is recommended that the influence of hydrological conditions and industrial activities should be a key consideration when developing regulations for the management of heavy metals in rivers.

Xiangjiang (XJ) is a typical urban inland river that serves as a drinking water source, which may be affected by the currently used organochlorine pesticides (CUOCPs) originating from agricultural activities in the vicinity. On this basis, this study comprehensively explored the occurrence and distribution characteristics of CUOCPs in surface water and sediments under long-term precipitation and subsequent floods. Considering the low concentration of CUOCPs in water, a technique combining high-throughput organic analysis with high-volume solid phase extraction (High-throat/Hi-volume SPE) was introduced for effective analysis of CUCOPs. The results showed that the concentration of CUOCPs in the water and sediments of XJ ranged from 2.33 to 6.40 ng L -1 (average of 3.93 ± 1.15 ng L -1 ) and from 1.52 to 21.2 ng g -1 (average of 6.60 ± 4.31 ng g -1 dw), respectively. The distribution of CUOCPs in water was consistent throughout XJ, but that in sediments was not uniform, indicating a stronger impact of floods on water than on sediments. Water-sediment partition coefficients were generally >2 L g -1 , showing a tendency of CUOCP dominance in sediments. The results of principal component analysis and cluster analysis showed that the occurrence of CUOCPs is significantly affected by exogenous disturbance, which could be flood events; meanwhile, clusters of CUOCPs were found in both water and sediments in the source-limited middle reaches in urban areas. Characterizing the occurrence of organic contaminants (OCs) of environmental health concern in municipal sewage sludges is essential for safe handling and disposal of these abundant materials. This meta-analysis aimed to (i) summarize the extent of studies performed on the chemical composition of sewage sludges from China and the U.S., the world's two largest chemical producers, (ii) identify chemical groups of priority concern, (iii) quantitatively compare chemical abundance in sludge between nations, (iv) determine longitudinal contaminant accumulation trends in sludge, and (v) identify data gaps with regard to OC concentrations in sludge. A literature search was conducted on concentrations of OCs in U.S. sludges produced during treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater and compared statistically to contaminant levels in Chinese sludge abstracted from a recently established database. Longitudinal trends of OC occurrence were interpreted in the context of national chemical production, usage statistics, and regulations. A total of 105 studies on OCs in U.S. sewage sludge were found, while a total of 159 had been found in China. Among 1175 OCs monitored for, 23% of all analytes had been monitored in both countries (n = 269), 41% (n = 480) in China only, and the remaining 36% (n = 426) in the U.S. only. On average, concentrations of OCs were 4.0 times higher in U.S. than in Chinese sewage sludge, with the highest detection being observed for alkylphenol ethoxylates. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 / c . The fused-ring system is not planar and the five- and six-membered rings are trans -fused. The mol-ecular geometry is partially stabilized by an intra-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bond, forming an S (6) ring motif. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by C-H⋯O and C-H⋯π inter-actions into a three-dimensional network. Giardia duodenalis has a wide range of host species and is a common causative agent of diarrheal disease in humans and animals. This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the pooled prevalence of Giardia among dogs in China. We extracted 33 studies related to the prevalence of G. duodenalis in dogs, with samples taken from 2001 to 2021. The random-effect model was used to calculate pooled prevalence estimates with 95% confidence intervals, and the analyzed data were from 14 provinces in China. The estimated overall prevalence of G. duodenalis among dogs in China was 11.2%. The prevalence of Giardia was significantly higher in Northwestern China (35.7%) than in other regions. The prevalence in 2010 or later (11.8%) was significantly higher than in 2010 or before (6.9%). The estimated prevalence detected by microscopy (9.3%) was lower than molecular (12.3%) and serological (14.3%) ones. The prevalence was higher in dogs <1 year of age (12.2%) than that >1 year (5.4%). Among the genotype groups, the positive rate of assemblage A (5.2%) was significantly higher than that of other assemblages. Depending on the dog' type, the prevalence of G. duodenalis in stray dogs (3.5%) was lower than that in pet dogs (6.7%) and intensively breeding dogs (11.8%). In addition, no correlation was found between Giardia positive rate and the dogs' gender ( p  > 0.05). We also analyzed the effects of different geographic factor subgroups (longitude, latitude, precipitation, temperature, humidity, and altitude) on the prevalence of G. duodenalis in dogs in China. The results showed that giardiasis was widespread in dogs in China. It is suggested that corresponding control scheme and effective management measures should be formulated and applied to reduce the transmission of G. duodenalis according to the difference in geographical conditions in different areas.

The illegal disposal of industrial sewage sludge has caused serious environmental pollution. To develop identification technology of industrial sewage sludge based on the characteristic fingerprints is a promising method that is helpful to clarify the responsibility of illegal enterprises. In this study, heavy metal profiles of sewage sludge from industries (including printing and dyeing industry and other industries) and municipal sewage treatment plant located in eastern China were determined, and their performance of classification was evaluated by principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discrimination analysis (LDA). Results showed that heavy metal composition can be an effective tool for distinguishing sewage sludge between printing and dyeing industry and other industries, with an accuracy rate of 82.9%. Meanwhile, heavy metal speciation may be a promising method for identification of printing and dyeing sludge from municipal sewage sludge, the accuracy rate of which reached 100%. Moreover, antimony (Sb) and zinc (Zn) are two indicators, which can be used to identify sewage sludge between printing and dyeing sub-industries, and the accuracy rate was 90%. We concluded that heavy metal profiles may be a precise and promising tool for identification of printing and dyeing sludge. Microsporidia are a group of obligate intracellular parasites which lack mitochondria and have highly reduced genomes. Therefore, they are unable to produce ATP via the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. Instead, they have evolved strategies to obtain and manipulate host metabolism to acquire nutrients. However, little is known about how microsporidia modulate host energy metabolisms. Here, we present the first targeted metabolomics study to investigate changes in host energy metabolism as a result of infection by a microsporidian. Metabolites of silkworm embryo cell (BmE) were measured 48 h post infection by Nosema bombycis. Thirty metabolites were detected, nine of which were upregulated and mainly involved in glycolysis (glucose 6-phosphate, fructose 1,6-bisphosphate) and the TCA cycle (succinate, α-ketoglutarate, cis-aconitate, isocitrate, citrate, fumarate). Pathway enrichment analysis suggested that the upregulated metabolites could promote the synthesization of nucleotides, fatty acids, and amino acids by the host. ATP concentration in host cells, however, was not significantly changed by the infection. This ATP homeostasis was also found in Encephalitozoon hellem infected mouse macrophage RAW264.7, human monocytic leukemia THP-1, human embryonic kidney 293, and human foreskin fibroblast cells. UV-based water treatment processes have been reported to induce genotoxicity during the treatments of surface water, drinking water and artificial water with natural organic matters (NOMs), causing genotoxicity concerns for the drinking water safety. Nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) were generally reported to be much more genotoxic than their non-nitrogenous analogues, and might be responsible for the genotoxicity in UV processes. Although nitrate-rich water was getting attention for the possibility of genotoxicity and N-DBPs during UV treatments, the impact mechanism of nitrate on the degradation of NOMs, the formation of N-DBPs and genotoxicity has not been explicated. Here simulation experiments of NOM degradation under medium-pressure (MP) UV and MP UV/H 2 O 2 treatments were conducted to explore the effect of nitrate on the molecular characteristics of NOM, the nitrate-derived N-DBPs and the potential genotoxicity through non-targeted analysis and CALUX® reporter gene assays. The results showed that nitrate can accelerate the degradation of NOMs in the MP UV process but inhibit the degradation of NOMs in the MP UV/H 2 O 2 process. During the degradation of NOMs, the molecular compositions varied by the effect of nitrate on oxygen atoms, molecule analogs, and saturation. A total of 105 and 374 nitrate-derived N-DBPs were identified in the MP UV and MP UV/H 2 O 2 treatment, respectively. Most of these N-DBPs contain one nitrogen atom, and the representative features are nitro-, methoxy- (or hydroxyl-) and ester- groups on benzene. The objective of this study was to find the role of LncRNA SNHG12 in the regulation of hypertensive vascular endothelial injury. LncRNA SNHG12 and miR-25-3p expression were detected by quantitative RT-PCR. Protein levels of Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6), endothelial cell (EC) senescence markers p16 and p21, and EC marker CD31 were measured by Western blot. The apoptosis of HUVECs was detected by flow cytometry. The binding between LncRNA SNHG12 and miR-25-3p was verified by dual luciferase reporter gene assay and RNA pull-down assay. As a result, LncRNA SNHG12 was down-regulated in aortic primary ECs isolated from Ang II-induced hypertensive mice and 1 kidney/deoxycorticosterone acetate/salt-induced hypertensive mice. In Ang II-treated HUVECs, the expression level of SNHG12 was reduced and the overexpression of SNHG12 inhibited EC senescence markers p16 and p21 expressions, the apoptosis of HUVECs, and caspase-3 activity. Further investigation confirmed that LncRNA SNHG12 bound to miR-25-3p, and negatively regulated miR-25-3p expression. MiR-25-3p directly targeted SIRT6 and negatively regulated SIRT6 expression. In addition, SNHG12 overexpression inhibited Ang II-induced HUVECs injury through regulating miR-25-3p. Finally, in vivo experiments showed LncRNA SNHG12 overexpression alleviated vascular endothelial injury in Ang II-induced hypertensive mice. Cryptosporidiosis is an important zoonosis caused by Cryptosporidium. This disease causes a global public health problem. The cat is considered to be one of the potential hosts for transmitting Cryptosporidium to humans. In this study, a global meta-analysis for Cryptosporidium infection in cats was performed. The articles related to Cryptosporidium infection in cats were systematically searched in databases China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang data, VIP Chinese Journal Database, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. Finally, 92 articles published from 1988 to 2021, which met the criteria of systematic review and meta-analysis, were collected. During the selected period, the overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium among cats was identified to be 6.0%. The prevalence of Cryptosporidium detected by microscopy, coproantigens, and molecular biology methods were 4.2%, 8.2%, and 5.0%, respectively. Among 9 species/genotypes (C. felis, C. parvum, C. muris, Cryptosporidium rat genotype IV, C. baileyi, C. ryanae, C. hominis, Cryptosporidium sp. rat genotype III and most closely related to Cryptosporidium sp. rat genotype III), the prevalence of C. parvum (4.2%) was significantly higher than that of other species/genotypes. Among five continents, the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in Africa (30.5%) was significantly higher than in other continents. We also analyzed the effects of different geographical factors (longitude, latitude, altitude, mean temperature, precipitation, and humidity) on Cryptosporidium infection among cats. The results showed that cryptosporidiosis was common in cats all over the world. This systematic review and meta-analysis has systematically introduced the global epidemiology of Cryptosporidium in cats and correlated risk factors. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in the surface water and sediments of the Xiangjiang (XJ) River, a drinking water source of Changsha City. The total concentrations of five detected OPEs (Σ 5 OPEs) in surface water and tap water were 6.07-25.3 ng L -1 (average 14.9 ± 4.98 ng L -1 ), and 23.6 ng L -1 , respectively, and four detected OPEs (Σ 4 OPEs) in sediments were 3.74-27.5 ng g -1 dw (average 12.1 ± 6.48 ng g -1 dw). Tris-2-chloroisopropyl phosphate (TCIPP) was the dominant contributor in water and sediment samples, accounting for over 40% of ΣOPEs. A particular flood event during July-August 2020 reduced the level of OPEs in river water, leading to generally uniform OPE concentrations in surface water and sediment samples from the upper, middle, and lower reaches of XJ. Principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR) results indicated that the main sources of OPEs in the surface water and sediments of XJ were emissions of waste-water treatment plants and anthropocentric activities. The results of ecological and human health risk assessments indicated that all OPEs posed a low or negligible ecological risk for algae, daphnia, and fish, and negligible risk for human health. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are typical industrial additives widely applied in various industrial and household products, but they may pollute drinking water. In the present study, the occurrence of OPEs in drinking water was analyzed. For this purpose, 25 drinking water samples were collected from households in 25 cities in China. The concentrations of OPEs were accurately determined according to a high-throughput organic analysis testing combined with high-volume solid phase extraction (Hi-throat/Hi-volume SPE) technique. Through this technique, nine OPEs were detected, with spiked recoveries from 77% to 101%, and their total concentrations (ΣOPEs) ranging from 46.8 to 251 (average 126) ng L -1 . The detection frequencies of the selected OPEs determined via Hi-throat/Hi-volume SPE were 88.0%-100%, which are much higher than those previously reported. The limit of detections of the OPEs was low at < 0.01 ng L -1 , which could be mainly attributed to the high volume of accumulated drinking water (>20 L). OPEs in drinking water presented a decreasing trend from cities in coastal provinces to inland cities of China. Redundancy analysis showed that the concentrations of OPEs in drinking water were significantly influenced by economic-demographic influencing factors. Objective: To analyze the clinicopathological characteristics of T1 breast cancer, the risk of lymph node metastasis and related prognostic factors. Methods: The National Cancer Institute Surveillance, Epidemiology and Results (SEER) database was utilized to search and screen out 73 421 female patients with T1 breast cancer from 2010 to 2015 for retrospective analysis. Logistic regression was used to assess the risk factors of lymph node metastasis. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to analysis overall survival (OS) and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS); Log-rank test and Cox risk model were used for prognostic analysis. Results: A total of 73 421 female patients were enrolled, including 61 955 (84.4%) N0 stage, 9 995 N1 stage (13.6%), 1 087 N2 stage (1.5%) and 384 N3 stage (0.5%). Patients with invasive cancer, histological grade 3, T1c stage, progesterone receptor (PR) positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2) positive were most likely to develop lymph node metastasis (all P <0.05). The median follow-up time was 55 months. The 5-year survival rate was 93.8%, and the 5-year BCSS rate was 98.2%. Cox regression analysis showed that T stage ( HR =1.517, 95% CI : 1.382-1.666, P <0.01), N stage ( HR =5.173, 95% CI : 4.424-6.049, P <0.01), estrogen receptor (ER) status ( HR =0.774, 95% CI : 0.607-0.987, P =0.039), PR status ( HR =0.745, 95% CI : 0.689-0.806, P <0.01) and subtype ( HR =1.439, 95% CI : 1.078-1.478, P =0.011) were independent prognostic risk factors for the OS. Histological grade ( HR =2.100, 95% CI : 1.766-2.483, P <0.01), T stage ( HR =1.310, 95% CI : 1.193-1.439, P <0.01), N stage ( HR =21.230, 95% CI : 17.980-25.060, P <0.01), PR status ( HR =0.855, 95% CI : 0.791-0.925, P <0.01) were independent prognostic risk factors for the BCSS in T1 breast cancer. Conclusions: The lymph node metastasis rate of T1 breast cancer is low and the overall prognosis is good. Pathological type, histological grade, tumor size and subtype maybe helpful in predicting the lymph node metastasis of T1 breast cancer.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known xenoestrogen, and UV/H 2 O 2 advanced oxidation process (AOP) is one of the most effective technologies to remove BPA from water. Using BPA spiked tap water, a batch-scale photochemical experiment was conducted to investigate whether BPA can pose a genotoxicity concern during the medium pressure (MP) UV/H 2 O 2 treatment and the post-chloramination. Samples at different UV exposure and post-chloramination durations were collected and analyzed by CALUX® gene reporter assays regarding estrogen receptor α (ERα) and p53 transcriptional activity. MP UV/H 2 O 2 process did not cause extra estrogenic effects from the degradation of BPA, whereas genotoxicity occurred when the treated water was exposed with monochloramine. Seven frequently reported nitrogenous disinfection byproducts (N-DBPs) were detected, but none of them were responsible for the observed genotoxicity. Employed with gas chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-QTOF-MS), four compounds possibly contributed to the genotoxicity were tentatively identified and two of them with aminooxy- or cyano- group were considered as "new" N-DBPs. In this work, a sensitive electrochemical method for bleomycin (BLM) determination was reported on the basis of BLM-mediated activation of Zn 2+ -dependent DNAzyme and the adsorption of signal probes by a metal-organic framework (MOF) modified electrode. Two hairpin DNAs were employed in this protocol, one (HP1) for BLM recognition and one (HP2) for amplified signal output. The presence of BLM and Fe 2+ caused the formation of BLM-Fe (II) complex to cleave HP1, releasing DNAzyme fragments, which could further hybridize with substrate HP2 to form a partial double-stranded DNA duplex and enable the activation of Zn 2+ -dependent DNAzyme with the coexistence of Zn 2+ . The Zn 2+ -dependent DNAzyme catalyzed the cyclic cleavage of magnetic beads (MB)-immobilized HP2 to release massive DNA fragments with a Fc-labeled- terminal, which could be used for BLM quantification through electrochemical measurement after their adsorption on a MOF modified electrode. Attributing to the high catalytic efficiency of DNAzyme and excellent electrochemical performance of MOF modified electrode, our method revealed an impressive limit of detection as low as 4 pM BLM with a linear range of 5-2000 pM. Besides, the easy synthesis of MOF without further modification and the easy way of adsorption for signal achievement facilitated the operation process. The intestinal microbiome plays a pivotal role in the nutritional digestion and metabolism of the grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Here, we characterized the digesta and mucosal microbiome of the anterior, middle, and posterior intestine of the grass carp, using 16S rRNA next-generation sequencing. Based on 16S rRNA amplicon data, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroides were the dominant phyla in the intestine of grass carp. Our results also showed that microbial communities of the middle intestine exhibited higher alpha diversity indices compared with the anterior and posterior intestine. The clustering of microbial communities that had either colonized in the digesta or were attached to the mucosa, were significantly tighter in the posterior intestine, based on average unweighted Unifrac distances (P < 0.05). The digesta or mucosa of the anterior and middle intestines were similar in microbial composition, but were significantly different to the posterior intestine (P < 0.05). In digesta and mucosa samples from the posterior intestine, we observed a significantly increased abundance of cellulose-degrading microbiomes, such as Bacteroides, Clostridiales and Spirochaetia (P < 0.05). Our results suggested that the microbiomes of the posterior intestine, either attached to the mucosa or colonized in the digesta, were distinct from the microbiomes of the anterior and middle intestine in grass carp., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) raise public concern as emerging contaminants. The abundance and variation of 11 ARGs, intI1 and 16S rRNA gene were deciphered using quantitative PCR (qPCR) in two drinking water treatment systems that include river, wetland, drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) and tap water from the Yangtze River Delta. The influencing factors for ARG abundance in river water were also explored. All investigated genes were detected in river water and there was no significant difference between the two systems, with sulfonamide ARGs occupying the highest abundance. Temperature had a significant effect on the ARG distribution based on permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA). Further Spearman analysis demonstrated that temperature was strongly correlated with the abundance of sul1, sul2, tetA and tetC, and these genes were significantly correlated with environmental factors (including temperature, total organic carbon (TOC) and dissolved oxygen (DO)). Considering the frequency and abundance of ARGs, as well as their correlation with other genes, sul1, sul2, tetA and tetC could be used as indicators of ARGs in river water. No significant reduction was noted for the absolute abundance of ARGs from river water to wetland water. Principle coordinates analysis (PCoA) combined with PERMANOVA revealed that drinking water treatment was responsible for reducing 16S rRNA gene and ARG abundance resulting in 3-log reductions. Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are ubiquitous and toxic environmental pollutants, and have recently attracted much research attention. However, their occurrence in tapwater and the associated potential health risks have not been thoroughly studied. This work examined 26 household tapwater samples collected in 26 Chinese cities during August and September 2019. Concentrations of 79 SVOCs, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polychlorobenzenes (CBs), were determined using an emerging method of high throughput organic analysis testing combined with high volume solid phase extraction (Hi-throat/Hi-volume SPE). Total concentrations of PAHs, PCBs, OCPs, and CBs were in the ranges 8.70-103 ng L -1 (average 42.1 ng L -1 ), 61.6-434 pg L -1 (average 274 pg L -1 ), 13.1-266 pg L -1 (average 59.8 pg L -1 ), and 3.5-83.0 pg L -1 (average 13.8 pg L -1 ), respectively. PAHs were the dominant SVOCs, with concentrations 10-100 times those of PCBs, OCPs, and CBs. All the studied SVOCs had concentrations deemed acceptable by Chinese national tapwater standards. These measured SVOCs displayed little spatial variation across China, but were significantly correlated with the size of the economy and population of each city. There appears to be a close correlation between intestinal microbiotas and obesity. Still, our understanding of the relationship between the intestinal microbiota and body-mass in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) remains limited. Herein, we explored this association in the anterior, middle, and posterior intestine of cohabitating grass carp by using next-generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that alpha diversity indices of the low-weight-gain (LWG) groups were higher than that of the high-weight-gain (HWG) groups. HWG groups possessed the decreased ratio of Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes compared with that in the LWG groups. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) revealed that there were significant differences between the HWG and LWG groups. Furthermore, linear discriminant analysis (LDA) coupled with effect size (LEfSe) showed that the order Clostridiales were significantly abundant in the HWG groups. Phylogenetic molecular ecology networks (pMENs) showed a lower average path distance (GD), higher average clustering coefficient (avgCC), and higher average degree (avgK) in the HWG group. Our results suggested that there appeared to be a tight correlation between the intestinal microbiota and body-mass in grass carp. Complement component 4 (C4) has critical immunological functions in vertebrates. In the current study, a C4 homolog (gcC4) was identified in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The full-length 5458 bp gcC4 cDNA contained a 5148 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a protein of 1715 amino acids with a signal peptide and eight conservative domains. The gcC4 protein has a high level of identity with other fish C4 counterparts and is phylogenetically clustered with cyprinid fish C4. The gcC4 transcript shows wide tissue distribution and is inducible by Aeromonas hydrophila in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, its expression also fluctuates upon lipopolysaccharide or flagellin stimulation in vitro. During infection, the gcC4 protein level decreases or increases to varying degrees, and the intrahepatic C4 expression location changes. With gcC4 overexpression, interleukin 1 beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interferon transcripts are all upregulated by A. hydrophila infection. Meanwhile, overexpression of gcC4 reduces bacterial invasion or proliferation. Moreover, gcC4 may activate the NF-κB signaling pathway. Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites and cannot be cultured in vitro, which limits the use of current genetic engineering technologies on this pathogen. We isolated sporoplasms of Nosema bombycis to attempt to culture the pathogen in vitro. Cell-free medium was designed and successfully maintained the sporoplasms for 5 days. The sporoplasms were able to absorb ATP from the medium and DNA replicated during cultivation, although there was not a significant change in morphology and number of sporoplasms. Heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70), a highly conserved protein family, is widely distributed in organisms and plays fundamental roles in biotic and abiotic stress responses. However, reports on Hsp70 genes are scarce in microsporidia, a very large group of obligate intracellular parasites that can infect nearly all animals, including humans. In this study, we identified 37 Hsp70 proteins from eight microsporidian genomes and classified them into four subfamilies (A-D). The number of Hsp70 genes in these microsporidia was significantly fewer than in Rozella allomycis and yeast. All microsporidian species contained genes from each subfamily and similar subcellular locations (mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, cytosol, and cytosol and/or nucleus), indicating that each Hsp70 member may fulfil distinct functions. The conserved structures and motifs of the Hsp70 proteins in the same subfamily were highly similar. Expression analysis indicated that the subfamily C cytosol (cyto)-associated Hsp70s is functional during microsporidia development. Immunofluorescence assays revealed that Cyto-NbHsp70 was cytoplasmically located in the proliferation-stage of Nosema bombycis. Cyto-NbHsp70 antiserum also labeled Encephalitozoon hellem within infected cells, suggesting that this antiserum is a potential molecular marker for labeling the proliferative phases of different microsporidian species. The propagation of N. bombycis was significantly inhibited following RNAi of Cyto-NbHsp70, indicating that Cyto-NbHsp70 is important for pathogen proliferation. Our phylogenetic data suggest that Hsp70 proteins evolved during microsporidia adaption to intracellular parasitism, and they play important roles in pathogen development., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
