Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Abstract

The next generation of Cherenkov telescope cameras feature Silicon Photo Multipliers (SiPM), which can guarantee excellent performance and allow for observation also under moonlight, increasing duty-cycle and therefore the physics reach. A 4 m-diameter Davies-Cotton prototype telescope with a 9-degree optical FoV and a 1296-pixel SiPM camera, has been designed to meet the requirements of the next generation of ground-based gamma-ray observatories at the highest energies. The large-scale production of the telescopes for array deployment has required the development of a fully automated calibration strategy which relies on a dedicated hardware, the Camera Test Setup (CTS). For each camera pixel, the CTS is equipped with two LEDs, one operated in pulsed mode to reproduce signal and one in continuous mode to reproduce night-sky background. In this contribution we will present the camera calibration strategy, from the laboratory measurement to the on-site monitoring with emphasis on the results obtained with the first camera prototype. In addition, key performances such as charge resolution, time resolution and trigger efficiencies and their degradation with increasing night-sky background level will be presented.

Abstract

The single-mirror small-size telescope (SST-1M) is one of the three proposed designs for the small-size telescopes (SSTs) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project. The SST-1M will be equipped with a 4 m-diameter segmented mirror dish and an innovative fully digital camera based on silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs). Since the SST sub-array will consist of up to 70 telescopes, the challenge is not only to build a telescope with excellent performance, but also to design it so that its components can be commissioned, assembled and tested by industry. In this paper we review the basic steps that led to the design concepts for the SST-1M camera and the ongoing realization of the first prototype, with focus on the innovative solutions adopted for the photodetector plane and the readout and trigger parts of the camera. In addition, we report on results of laboratory measurements on real scale elements that validate the camera design and show that it is capable of matching the CTA requirements of operating up to high-moon-light background conditions., Comment: 30 pages, 61 figures

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observatory for very high-energy gamma rays will consist of about a hundred of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) of different size with a total reflective area of about 10,000 m$^2$. Here we present a novel technology for the production of IACT mirrors that has been developed in the Institute of Nuclear Physics PAS in Krakow, Poland. The mirrors are made by cold-slumping of the front reflecting aluminium-coated panel and the rear panel interspaced with aluminium spacers. Each panel is built of two glass panels laminated with a layer of a fibreglass tissue in between for reinforcement of the structure against mechanical damage. The mirror structure is open and does not require a perfect sealing needed in closed-type designs. It prohibits water to be trapped inside and enables a proper ventilation of the mirror. Full-size hexagonal prototype mirrors produced for the medium-sized CTA telescopes will be presented together with the results of recent comprehensive optical and durability tests. Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Observatory for high-energy gamma-ray astronomy will comprise several tens of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) of different size with a total reflective area of about 10,000 m$^2$. Here we present a new technology for the production of IACT mirrors that has been developed in the Institute of Nuclear Physics PAS in Krakow, Poland. An open-structure composite mirror consists of a rigid flat sandwich support structure and cast-in-mould spherical epoxy resin layer. To this layer a thin glass sheet complete with optical coating is cold-slumped to provide the spherical reflective layer of the mirror. The main components of the sandwich support structure are two flat float glass panels inter spaced with V-shape aluminum spacers of equal length. The sandwich support structure is open, thus enabling good cooling and ventilation of the mirror. A special arrangement of the aluminum spacers also prohibits water being trapped inside. The open-structure technology thus represents a novel cost-efficient approach that does not require the perfect sealing needed in closed-type mirrors. In addition, the technology enables the application of a dielectric coating. Abstract

A single-mirror small-size (1M-SST) Davies-Cotton telescope has been proposed for the southern observatory of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) by a consortium of scientific institutions from Poland, Switzerland, and Germany. The telescope has a 4 m diameter reflector and will be equipped with a fully digital camera based on Geiger avalanche photodiodes (APDs). Such a design is particularly interesting for CTA because it represents a very simple, reliable, and cheap solution for a SST. Here we present the design and the characteristics of the mechanical structure of the 1M-SST telescope and its drive system. We also discuss the results of a finite element method analysis in order to demonstrate the conformance of the design with the CTA specifications and scientific objectives. 13. Mechanical analysis of mirror panels used in CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array)

Abstract

This paper presents results of numerical simulations of a three-layer rectangular plate and a rotationally symmetric plate, as well as panels of mirrors produced for the project Cherenkov Telescope Array - the CTA. Calculations were based on the finite element m ethod and were prepared using ANSYS program. The problem of the three-layer rectangular plate and the rotationally symmetric plate loaded by bending moments on the edge was presented, with appropriate assumptions in the analysis. The theory of small and large deflections were analyzed and compared by the calculations. The curvature values at the middle and the end of plates were searched. Also bending moments needed to obtain the appropriate values of curvature were examined. Glass panels as a main part of CTA mirrors were described. The boundary conditions and loads, material properties were showed as well as the adopted assumptions in the analysis. Two cases were considered with two values of different radius of curvature. State of deformations and stresses which prevails in those parts of mirrors were checked. The results were depicted in the form of graphs of the radius of curvature and values of stresses for different values of mirror panel radius. Two methods, simple geometric and polynomial approximation, were used by which it was possible to approximate of radius of curvature changes in different places of panels after unloading the system.
