Background and Hypothesis Meta-analyses have shown that the majority of patients with schizophrenia who have not improved after 2 weeks of treatment with an antipsychotic drug are unlikely to fully respond later. We hypothesized that switching to another antipsychotic with a different receptor binding profile is an effective strategy in such a situation. Study Design In total, 327 inpatients with an acute exacerbation of schizophrenia were randomized to double-blind treatment with either olanzapine (5–20 mg/day) or amisulpride (200–800 mg/day). Those patients who had not reached at least 25% Positive-and-Negative-Syndrome-Scale (PANSS) total score reduction from baseline after 2 weeks (the “non-improvers”) were rerandomized double-blind to either staying on the same compound (“stayers”) or to switching to the other antipsychotic (“switchers”) for another 6 weeks. The primary outcome was the difference in the number of patients in symptomatic remission between the combined “switchers” and the “stayers” after 8 weeks of treatment, analyzed by logistic regression. Study Results A total of 142 nonimprovers were rerandomized at week two. 25 (45.5 %) of the ‘stayers' compared to 41 (68.3 %) of the “switchers” reached remission at endpoint (p = .006). Differences in secondary efficacy outcomes were not significant, except for the PANSS negative subscore and the Clinical-Global-Impression-Scale. “Switchers” and “stayers” did not differ in safety outcomes. Conclusions Switching “non-improvers” from amisulpride to olanzapine or vice-versa increased remission rates and was safe. The superiority in the primary outcome was, however, not paralleled by significant differences in most secondary efficacy outcomes and the effect was only apparent at the last visit making replications of longer duration necessary.

Borehole temperature measurements can be easily conducted at the end of a drilling operation during trip out of the drill string (logging while tripping) without the need for additional operational time. After the final drilling depth was reached, an autonomous borehole logging tool including a temperature sensor is placed at the lower end of the drill string with the sensor part having passed the drill bit and sticking out in the open borehole between bottom of the borehole and drill bit. During trip out the logging tool is hooked up together with the drill string inside the borehole and measures the fluid temperature within the borehole. Stationary phases occur at regular intervals during disconnecting drill rods from the drill string. The analysis of the borehole temperatures during these stationary phases allow the investigation of changes of borehole temperatures with depth and with time. These temperature changes are a function of the geothermal gradient and the perturbation of the temperature field by the drilling action. Here we present results of a pilot study (Freudenthal et al., 2022) based on borehole temperature measurements acquired with the sea floor drill rig MARUM-MeBo200. By modeling the temperature evolution from the start of the drilling operation on, it is possible to analyze the impact of the drilling perturbation on the temperature field and to conclude on the regional heat flux. Since 2012 Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) has acquired high-quality long-term multibeam sonar data from the seafloor at Clayoquot Slope off Vancouver Island which is one of the most active methane vent regions of the Cascadia Margin, and where ONC has one of its nodes of the NEPTUNE cabled seafloor observatory. The sonar was first deployed at a vent field of irregular activity (near Bubbly Gulch), and since 2014 it is located at an extremely active field (Gastown Alley). The data that have been analyzed so far exhibit the strong dependence of gas bubble emissions with tidal pressure, although the tides alone cannot explain all the observed dynamics such as onset cessation of ebullition or periods of strong versus absence of seepage, and other factors need to be considered and ideally monitored to predict future seepage.Seafloor cabled observatories are ideal to acquire high-resolution data of many ocean and seafloor parameters, including those from high-bandwidth data or power-intensive instruments. This presentation is an opportunity to explore possibilities to modify the existing seepage observatory, adding to the already installed instruments at Clayoquot Slope, or change focus to Barkley Canyon, another ONC node location, where hydrate mounts and outcrops occur and methane vents also exist.

The subduction of seamounts and basement ridges affects the structure, morphology, and physical state of a convergent margin. To evaluate their impact on the seismo-tectonic setting of the subduction zone and the tectonic development of the lower subducting and upper overriding plate, it is essential to know the precise location of subducted topographic features under the marine forearc. Offshore Northern Chile, the Iquique Ridge represents a broad zone of complex and heterogeneous structure of variable width on the oceanic Nazca Plate, which complicates attempts to project it beneath the forearc of the Chilean subduction zone. Here we use a state-of-the-art seismic reflection data processing approach to map structures related to ridge subduction under the marine forearc with unprecedented accuracy and resolution and evaluate their impact on the deformation of both the plate boundary and the upper plate. We show that significant ridge-related topography is currently subducting south of 20.5 °S and that the combined effect of horst and graben subduction with subduction of Iquique ridge-related thickened and elevated crust causes an upward bulging of the entire upper plate from the plate interface up to the seafloor as well as the presence of kilometer-scale anticlinal structures observed in multibeam bathymetric data that are approximately aligned with horsts seaward of the trench. In the area affected by the subducting ridge, a frontal prism is absent, which may relate to frontal subduction erosion caused by the excess lower plate topography. In contrast farther towards the north, where only isolated seamounts subduct, a small frontal prism and a slope/apron sediment cover down to 3000 m water depth are found.

The left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) has been ascribed key roles in numerous cognitive domains, including language, executive function and social cognition. However, its functional organisation, and how the specific areas implicated in these cognitive domains relate to each other, is unclear. Possibilities include that the LIFG underpins a domain-general function or, alternatively, that it is characterized by functional differentiation, which might occur in either a discrete or a graded pattern. The aim of the present study was to explore the topographical organisation of the LIFG using a bimodal data-driven approach. To this end, we extracted functional connectivity (FC) gradients from 1) the resting-state fMRI time-series of 150 participants (77 female), and 2) patterns of co-activation derived meta-analytically from task data across a diverse set of cognitive domains. We then sought to characterize the FC differences driving these gradients with seed-based resting-state FC and meta-analytic co-activation modelling analyses. Both analytic approaches converged on an FC profile that shifted in a graded fashion along two main organisational axes. An anterior-posterior gradient shifted from being preferentially associated with high-level control networks (anterior LIFG) to being more tightly coupled with perceptually-driven networks (posterior). A second dorsal-ventral axis was characterized by higher connectivity with domain-general control networks on one hand (dorsal LIFG), and with the semantic network, on the other (ventral). These results provide novel insights into a graded functional organisation of the LIFG underpinning both task-free and task-constrained mental states, and suggest that the LIFG is an interface between distinct large-scale functional networks.Significance statementTo understand how function varies across the LIFG, we conducted a detailed, bimodal exploration of the spatial transitions in its voxel-wise FC patterns. We provide novel evidence of graded changes along two main organisational axes. Specifically, the LIFG was characterized by an anterior-posterior gradient, which could reflect a shift in function from perceptually-driven processing to task-oriented control processes. Moreover, we revealed a dorsal-ventral shift in FC that is consistent with the idea that domain-specificity is a core principle underpinning functional organisation of the LIFG. These gradients were replicated across task-free and task-constrained FC measures, suggesting that a similar fundamental organisation underpins both mental states.

Background : Around 20% - 30% of depressed individuals experience a chronic form of depression lasting two or more years. This naturalistic study investigates the characteristics and the course of chronic depressed patients (CD) during standard antidepressant treatment in comparison to not chronically depressed (NCD) patients. Methods : Data of 954 patients were drawn from the prospective naturalistic, multicenter study of the German research network on depression, CD was met as classifier by 113 patients (11.8%), whereas 841 patients (88.2%) had non-chronic courses (NCD). Results : CD was significantly associated with a low age at onset, use of benzodiazepines, psychotherapy at baseline, substance abuse, a depressive personality disorder and a low degree of extraversion. CD patients showed a longer hospital stay, lower remission rates, increased rates of suicidal ideation as well as higher depression scores at discharge. In addition, individuals with chronic depression continued to obtain higher neuroticism scores and lower extraversion scores at discharge. Limitation : Results were assessed by a post-hoc analysis, based on prospectively collected data. Conclusion : CD patients have an inferior outcome in clinical measures as well as personality dimensions (i.e. low extraversion) compared to non-CD patients. These findings support the notion that CD patients entering a setting of standard psychiatric inpatient care will show less benefit compared to non-CD patients, and that this difference as such may be used as a stratifying marker for providing specialized psychiatric treatment with optimized pharmacological and psychotherapeutic protocols.

The genetic architecture of atrial fibrillation (AF) encompasses low impact, common genetic variants and high impact, rare variants. Here, we characterize a high impact AF-susceptibility allele, KCNQ1 R231H, and describe its transcontinental geographic distribution and history. Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes procured from risk allele carriers exhibit abbreviated action potential duration, consistent with a gain-of-function effect. Using identity-by-descent (IBD) networks, we estimate the broad- and fine-scale population ancestry of risk allele carriers and their relatives. Analysis of ancestral migration routes reveals ancestors who inhabited Denmark in the 1700s, migrated to the Northeastern United States in the early 1800s, and traveled across the Midwest to arrive in Utah in the late 1800s. IBD/coalescent-based allele dating analysis reveals a relatively recent origin of the AF risk allele (~5000 years). Thus, our approach broadens the scope of study for disease susceptibility alleles to the context of human migration and ancestral origins., Many rare high-impact variants have been associated with disease, but the origins and functional impact are not always explored. Here, the authors trace the ancestry of a rare high impact atrial fibrillation allele in KCNQ1, and use iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes to characterize the effect of the allele.

Sediment geotechnical properties are an important component of geohazard analyses and studies on submarine slope failures on continental margins. The northern Cascadia margin is a region of repeated subduction earthquakes and related geohazards including devastating tsunamis. Despite several drilling campaigns at this margin mostly for gas hydrate studies, sediment geotechnical properties are lacking to date. We therefore investigated a set of 20 half-round samples from four drill sites of Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 311 along a margin-perpendicular transect. Samples were analysed for Atterberg properties (liquid limit, plasticity limit, plasticity index) and consolidation state (pre-consolidation stress, over-consolidation ratio, initial void ratio and compression index). Results of these parameters are in good agreement with similar studies at the southern Cascadia margin from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 204 and are regarded robust, despite the long time-span between sample recovery in 2005 and our analyses. Individual results are interpreted at each of the drill sites and reflect the overall tectonic state of the location within the accretionary prism. An interplay of site-specific tectonic forcing, including thrust faulting, uplift, folding, and erosion appears to govern the depth-dependent consolidation state of the sediments.

A well-recorded Mw 7.8 megathrust earthquake occurred on 27 October 2012 under the Queen Charlotte terrace off the west coast of Haida Gwaii, western Canada. In this study, we supplement limited earlier seismic refraction work on the offshore velocity structure off Haida Gwaii with data from ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) operating between 6 December 2012 and 5 January 2013. The OBS recorded a portion of the aftershock sequence, and an active-source seismic survey was conducted in January 2013 to acquire seismic refraction data in the region of the Haida Gwaii earthquake across the Queen Charlotte terrace. P-wave velocity analyses using first-arrival tomography showed relatively shallow (2.0–3.0 km below seafloor) high-velocity material with values up to 4.0 km/s beneath the terrace. At the one OBS station seaward of the deformation front on the abyssal plain, refraction velocities of ∼4.5 km/s indicated the top of the oceanic plate at ∼1–2 km below the seafloor. At several OBS stations, converted shear-wave velocities were determined within the sediment cover using reflected arrivals. The S-wave velocities ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 km/s, and the corresponding P/S velocity ratio was between 3.0 and 4.2. The new refraction data confirm earlier interpretations of high-velocity material in the shallow terrace that may indicate fractured oceanic crustal material lies significantly above the location where a subducted slab is thought to occur under the terrace. Transpressive deformation of the Pacific plate may explain these observations.

Objectives Predictors for unfavorable treatment outcome in major depressive disorder (MDD) applicable for treatment selection are still lacking. The database of a longitudinal multicenter study on 1079 acutely depressed patients, performed by the German research network on depression (GRND), allows supervised and unsupervised learning to further elucidate the interplay of clinical and psycho‐sociodemographic variables and their predictive impact on treatment outcome phenotypes. Experimental Procedures Treatment response was defined by a change of HAM‐D 17‐item baseline score ≥50% and remission by the established threshold of ≤7, respectively, after up to eight weeks of inpatient treatment. After hierarchical symptom clustering and stratification by treatment subtypes (serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, antipsychotic, and lithium augmentation), prediction models for different outcome phenotypes were computed with random forest in a cross‐center validation design. In total, 88 predictors were implemented. Results Clustering revealed four distinct HAM‐D subscores related to emotional, anxious, sleep, and appetite symptoms, respectively. After feature selection, classification models reached moderate to high accuracies up to 0.85. Highest accuracies were observed for the SSRI and TCA subgroups and for sleep and appetite symptoms, while anxious symptoms showed poor predictability. Conclusion Our results support a decisive role for machine learning in the management of antidepressant treatment. Treatment‐ and symptom‐specific algorithms may increase accuracies by reducing heterogeneity. Especially, predictors related to duration of illness, baseline depression severity, anxiety and somatic symptoms, and personality traits moderate treatment success. However, prospectives application of machine learning models will be necessary to prove their value for the clinic.

Pockmarks are crater-like depressions of erosive nature in marine or lacustrine sediments. They are often interpreted as the surface manifestation of hydrocarbon venting but may also result from freshwater flow in coastal regions, compaction induced sediment dewatering, or bottom scouring around natural or anthropogenic objects. Hence, they can be of relevance for the global carbon cycle, offshore infrastructure, benthic life, and slope stability. New bathymetric data from offshore Vancouver Island, Canada, indicate the presence of a huge pockmark field that had escaped attention in previous studies. The pockmarks are located between 100 and 200 mt depth around the head of Barkley Canyon. Owing to the presence of a large cabled underwater observatory related to the canyon, a wealth of multi-resolution and multi-disciplinary seafloor data is available from the pockmark field. Available data include multibeam surveys, seafloor video footage, seismic and EK60 echo-sounder profiles, and multibeam water-column information. First results from seafloor mapping indicate that the pockmark field consists of several thousands of pockmarks. By applying workflows that automatically map the pockmarks in digital elevation models, we are able to quantitatively investigate their morphology and spatial distribution. The pockmarks range in size between 100 - 500 m², with some exceptions as large as 900 m². Their mean depth varies between 0.5 - 2 m. Seepage of gas from the seafloor is well known from the area but could not yet been directly associated with the pockmark depressions. Instead, limited video footage from the seafloor indicate that at least some depressions host meter-sized boulders within their craters. We will next investigate possible temporal changes in pockmark morphology and seep activity by individual analysis of datasets that have been repeatedly collected between 2010-2020. By resolving pockmark morphologies and seep activities on an annual time-scale over a decade, the results will hopefully add a level of detail to our understanding of pockmark formation and seep activity within one of North Americas largest pockmark fields.

In the Canadian Arctic, permafrost and permafrost-associated gas hydrates formed extensively during the last 1 Ma. After the last glaciation, a marine transgression followed and former terrestrially exposed shelf areas became submerged. Subaerial mean annual temperatures of -20°C or even less changed to present submarine bottom water temperatures near -1°C. The relict submarine permafrost and gas hydrates present in the Beaufort Sea still react to this ongoing thermal change which results in their continued degradation. Thawing permafrost and destabilisation of permafrost-associated gas hydrates may release previously trapped greenhouse gases and can lead to even further gas hydrate dissociation. Moreover, thawing permafrost poses a geohazard in form of landslides and ground collapses. Yet, both the extent of the submarine permafrost and the permafrost-associated gas hydrates are still not well known. Here, we present three different approaches using marine 2D multichannel seismic data to improve the current knowledge of the distribution of offshore permafrost and gas hydrates occurrences in the southern Canadian Beaufort Sea. The acoustic properties of permafrost are determined by the content of ice and unfrozen pore fluids. Changing permafrost conditions affect the elasticity of the medium making seismic methods appropriate for permafrost detection. First, we identify direct and indirect seismic reflection indicators from permafrost and gas hydrates by the presence of cross-cutting, polarity-reversed, and upward-bend reflections as well as velocity pull-ups and shallow pronounced high-amplitude reflections. Second, using diving-wave tomography provides insights into the near-surface permafrost structure by imaging the velocity structure in greater detail than achievable by standard velocity analyses. And third, diffractions separated from the reflected wavefield yield insights into the sub-wavelength architecture of the permafrost realm on the southern Canadian Beaufort Shelf that may add information about weak phase-boundaries and small-scale heterogeneities. All methods are applied to seismic lines crossing the outer continental margin, where a maximum thermal effect of the transgression is expected, and thus a maximum lateral variation in permafrost and permafrost-associated gas hydrate phase boundaries is expected to be present.

The Mangatolu Triple Junction (MTJ) and the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center (FRSC) are two prominent bathymetric features in the northern Lau Basin in the southwest Pacific Ocean. We present the results of six W-E running Multi-Channel Seismic (MCS), magnetic and sediment echo sounding profiles acquired during the ARCHIMEDES-I expedition. These profiles cover the MTJ, the FRSC and the region just south of the FRSC to investigate the tectonic history and current tectonic activity of the Lau Basin. On all MCS profiles, we observe a heavily faulted basement on both sides of the MTJ and FRSC with faults that are covered with sediments, confirmed by the sediment echo sounding data. We consider these buried faults inactive today. We also observe faults that reach the seafloor. These faults are generally located closer to the MTJ and the FRSC and they correlate well with seismic activity recorded in the region. We thus consider these faults currently active. Seismically transparent bodies are observed on most profiles as well. We have interpreted those as volcanic intrusions, i.e. sills, or as volcanoes that pierce through the stratigraphy, especially closer to the volcanic arc. The two sets of faults, the notion that extension rates are higher at the MTJ (32 mm/yr) than at the southern tip of the FRSC (8 mm/yr) and the results from our newly acquired and interpreted magnetic data, have led to the interpretation that an earlier rift phase accommodated extension in a wide rift tectonic setting between 2.15 Ma and 0.85 Ma at the MTJ and 2.15 and 1.61 Ma at the FRSC. Today, the extension is accommodated in a narrow rift tectonic setting close to the MTJ and FRSC with a higher extension rate at the MTJ than at the southern tip of the FRSC. These findings suggest that the MTJ and FRSC are one, single intra-plate extension zone that is in the process of breaking apart the overriding Niuafo’ou-Tonga microplate along the MTJ and FRSC.

Chirp sub-bottom profilers (SBP) provide centi-to-decimetre resolution, seismic data with applications for various geophysical and geological purposes. To verify the field application of imaging of a buried target with a cost-effective and easy-to-apply pseudo-3D Chirp SBP survey, we explored the buried site of an ancient wooden shipwreck off the west coast of Korea before underwater excavations. The survey was conducted using a commercial 2D Chirp SBP system with a newly devised recording system that preserved the true polarity of the chirp signal. To produce high-resolution 3D Chirp SBP data from 2D Chirp SBP datasets recorded by the novel system, an optimal data processing sequence, consisting of a first phase of 2D data processing and a second phase of 3D data processing was designed. The first, 2D phase, included the estimation of a source sweep signature, cross-correlation, and deconvolution using an inverse filter. The resulting resolution of the 2D Chirp SBP data was better than that of the enveloped data provided by the commercial acquisition system. The second phase of 3D data processing included gathering 3D datasets, redistributing of ping positions, and static correction. To improve the consistency of the seismic events and reduce the repetitive corrections (swell, tidal, tie, and residual corrections), a static correction was based on multi-beam echo sounder data. The amplitude variation near the shipwreck was clearly apparent in the time slice from the final pseudo-3D Chirp SBP dataset with a bin size of 2.0 m (crossline) × 0.6 m (inline). Through 3D rendering, the buried ancient shipwreck with dimensions of 5 m (width) × 12 m (length) × 2 m (depth) was imaged successfully.

Since 2009, unprecedented comprehensive long-term gas hydrate observations have become available from Ocean Networks Canada's NEPTUNE cabled ocean observatory at the northern Cascadia margin. Several experiments demonstrate the scientific importance of permanent power and Internet connectivity to the ocean floor as they have advanced the field of gas hydrate related research. One example is the cabled crawler Wally at Barkley Canyon, enabling live in situ exploration of the hydrate mounds and its associated benthic communities through the crawler's mobility and permanent accessibility throughout the year. Another example is a bubble-imaging sonar at Clayoquot Slope, revealing the strong relationship between ebullition of natural gas and tidal pressure, without apparent correlation to earthquakes, storms, or temperature fluctuations, in year-long continuous recordings. Finally, regular observatory maintenance cruises allow additional science sampling including echo-sounder surveys to extend the observatory footprint. Long-term trends in the data are not yet apparent but can also become evident from continuous measurements, as ocean observatories such as NEPTUNE are built for a 25-year lifetime, and expansion of the observatory networks makes these findings comparable and testable. Plain Language Summary Natural gas near the ocean floor creates a rapidly changing environment where it is important to collect data continuously in order to determine the magnitude, speed, and potential mechanism of change. This long-standing challenge of year-round access to the deep ocean has been tackled by Ocean Networks Canada through cabling the northern Cascadia seafloor, providing power and Internet communication-ideal for power-hungry instruments, large data volumes, and real-time access. The presence of gas influences the shape of the seafloor, animal activity, and potential escape of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. A seafloor crawler Wally was operated around deep canyon mounds of gas hydrate (a solid gas-water composite) since 2009 and helped discover environmental changes influencing sea life. Further along the continental slope, an acoustic sonar monitored rising methane bubbles where the bubbling appears to be controlled neither by earthquakes, winter storms, nor subtle temperature changes but actually strongly by tidal pressure. Regular maintenance of the observatory by ship allows more data to be collected near the cabled seafloor sites, extending the observations to a larger area. Ocean observatories are built to last decades and therefore more data for more research can be collected, potentially detecting relatively slow processes as well.

At the northern Cascadia subduction zone, the subducting Explorer and Juan de Fuca plates interact across a transform deformation zone, known as the Nootka fault zone (NFZ). This study continues the Seafloor Earthquake Array Japan Canada Cascadia Experiment to a second phase (SeaJade II) consisting of nine months of recording of earthquakes using ocean-bottom and land-based seismometers. In addition to mapping the distribution of seismicity, including an MW 6.4 earthquake and aftershocks along the previously unknown Nootka Sequence Fault, we also conducted seismic tomography, which delineates the geometry of the shallow subducting Explorer plate (ExP). We derived hundreds of high-quality focal mechanism solutions from the SeaJade II data. The mechanisms manifest a complex regional tectonic state, with normal faulting of the ExP west of the NFZ, left-lateral strike-slip behaviour of the NFZ, and reverse faulting within the overriding plate above the subducting Juan de Fuca plate. Using data from the combined SeaJade I and II catalogs, we have performed double-difference hypocentre relocations and found seismicity lineations to the southeast of, and oriented 18° clockwise from, the subducted NFZ, which we interpret to represent less active small faults off the primary faults of the NFZ. These lineations are not optimally oriented for shear failure in the regional stress field, which we inferred from averaged focal mechanism solutions, and may represent paleo-configurations of the NFZ. Further, active faults interpreted from seismicity lineations within the subducted plate, including the Nootka Sequence Fault, may have originated as conjugate faults within the paleo-NFZ.

We resolve a previously unrecognized shallow subducting seamount from a re-processed multichannel seismic depth image crossing the 1994 M7.8 Java tsunami earthquake slip area. Seamount subduction is related to the uplift of the overriding plate by lateral shortening and vertical thickening, causing pronounced back-thrusting at the landward slope of the forearc high and the formation of splay faults branching off the landward flank of the subducting seamount. The location of the seamount in relation to the 1994 earthquake hypocentre and its co-seismic slip model suggests that the seamount acted as a seismic barrier to the up-dip co-seismic rupture propagation of this moderate size earthquake. The wrapping of the co-seismic slip contours around the seamount indicates that it diverted rupture propagation, documenting the control of forearc structures on seismic rupture.

Mega‐scale glacial lineations formed by the raking of ice shelves across the seafloor have been reported from multiple polar regions. Here, we present the first evidence of continental slope situated buried lineations in the southern Canadian Beaufort Sea in present‐day water depths of 220 to 800 m. Three separate surfaces with lineations are defined at sub‐seafloor depths of 40 m to 390 m. All lineations are mostly parallel to the general trend of slope contours. The uppermost surface is recognized over a distance of 56 km. In water depths > 500 m the lineations are parallel to each other at a consistent direction (43°–44°). The second lineated surface is a regionally occurring erosional unconformity. This event has two sub‐sets of lineations: mid‐slope situated lineations oriented at 42°–48°, and lineations closer to the continental shelf break at 55°–59°. The third lineated surface is an unconformable horizon buried up to 390 m below seafloor with lineaments oriented between 30° and 55°. All three sets of lineations are interpreted to have been produced by ice‐ploughing on the paleo‐seafloor through the grounding of an ice shelf. Our observations are similar to those documented along the slope off northern Alaska, Chukchi Rise, and Lomonosov Ridge. Collectively, these observations support the concept of an extensive ice shelf across the Arctic Ocean that grounded locally along its margins during multiple glaciations, including during the penultimate (or an earlier) glaciation. The youngest set of lineations indicates ice movement to the southwest with a suggested source in Amundsen Gulf and/or M'Clure Strait. Tentative age considerations for these youngest lineations indicate the first evidence for an analogous extensive ice shelf configuration for the Last Glacial Maximum., We present the first evidence of continental slope situated buried lineations in the southern Canadian Beaufort Sea in present‐day water depths of 220 to 800 m. Three stratigraphically separate surfaces with lineations have been defined from three‐dimensional seismic data. Seafloor heat flow measurements are utilized to determine the geothermal regime of the Danube deep-sea fan in the western Black Sea and are presented in the larger context of regional gas hydrate occurrences. Heat flow data were collected across paleo-channels in water depths of 550–1460 m. Heat flow across levees ranges from 25 to 30 mW m−2 but is up to 65 mW m−2 on channel floors. Gravity coring reveals sediment layers typical of the western Black Sea, consisting of three late Pleistocene to Holocene units, notably red clay within the lowermost unit cored. Heat flow derived from the bottom-simulating reflector (BSR), assumed to represent the base of the gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ), deviates from seafloor measurements. These discrepancies are linked either to fast sedimentation or slumping and associated variations in sediment physical properties. Topographic effects account of up to 50% of heat flow deviations from average values. Combined with climate-induced variations in seafloor temperature and sea-level since the last glacial maximum large uncertainties in the prediction of the base of the GHSZ remain. A regional representative heat flow value is ~30 mW m−2 for the study region but deviations from this value may be up to 100%.

Highlights • In-situ temperature measurements were conducted at the Danube deep sea fan. • Operations were performed with the MARUM-MeBo200 seafloor drill rig. • The BSR is located ∼20 m below the current gas hydrate stability zone. • Seismic data suggest presence of shallower BSR-like events. Abstract Coring, geophysical logging, and in-situ temperature measurements were performed with the MARUM-MeBo200 seafloor rig to characterize gas hydrate occurrences in sediments of the Danube deep sea fan, off Romania, Black Sea. The new drilling data showed no evidence for significant gas hydrate saturations within the sediments but the presence of free gas at the depth of the bottom-simulating reflector (BSR). In-situ temperature and core-derived geochemical data suggest that the current base of the gas hydrate stability zone (BGHSZ) is ∼20 m shallower than the BSR. Investigation of the seismic data around the drill sites shows several locations where free gas previously trapped at a former BGHSZ migrated upwards forming a new reflection above the BSR. This shows that the gas hydrate system in the Danube deep sea fan is still responding to climate changes initiated at the end of the last glacial maximum.

Objective Previous studies have suggested alterations in the kynurenine pathway as a major link between cytokine and neurotransmitter abnormalities in psychiatric disorders. Most of these studies used a cross-sectional case-control study design. However, knowledge is still lacking regarding the stability over time of kynurenine pathway metabolites and the functionally related cytokines. Therefore, we studied the stability of cytokines and tryptophan (TRP) parameters over a period of 12 weeks. Methods A total of 117 participants–39 with major depression, 27 with somatoform disorder, and 51 healthy controls–were enrolled. Four evaluations, including blood withdrawal and psychometric testing, were performed over a period of 12 weeks. We used ELISA to measure interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1 receptor antagonist (RA) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF α). High-performance liquid chromatography was used to analyze neurotransmitter variables, i.e. TRP, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), kynurenine (KYN), 3-OH-kynurenine (3-HK), and kynurenic acid (KYNA). Results We found no significant fluctuations of TRP, its metabolites (5-HIAA, KYN, KYNA, and 3-HK), or the cytokines (IL-1RA, IL-6, and TNF α) in any of the groups over the 12 weeks. Conclusion To our knowledge, this is the first longitudinal study performed in psychiatric patients to verify the stability and consequently the reliability of the biological parameters we investigated. Our data indicate that TRP metabolites and cytokines are reliable biological parameters in psychiatric research because they do not fluctuate significantly over time.

The MARUM-MeBo sea bed drilling technology is developed since 2004 at the MARUM Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen (Freudenthal and Wefer, 2013). Presently two drill rigs are in operation for drilling and coring down to more than 70 m (MARUM-MeBo70) and 200 m (MARUM-MeBo200), respectively. The robotic drill rig with the required drill tools is deployed on the seabed, where the drill string for conducting coring is assembled during the drilling operation. In addition to wireline core barrels a temperature probe can be used for measuring formation bottom hole temperature at discrete drilling depths by pushing the probe about 15 cm into the base of the bore hole. The temperature is logged for about 10 – 15 minutes in order to allow for dissipation of the frictional heat generated during pushing and equilibration to formation temperature. When the temperature measurement is completed, the probe is recovered out of the drill string and the drilling operation can be continued.The trip out of the drill string after reaching the target drill depth can be used for logging of the geophysical properties within the borehole and the adjacent formation. A memory logging tool is lowered into the drill string with the sensor part penetrating through the drill bit. When the drill string is tripped out the probe is raised together with the drill string inside the borehole and conducts the geophysical measurements. This method called “logging while tripping” is especially suitable for unconsolidated sediments and logging in unstable borehole conditions, since the drill string stabilizes the borehole above the sensor part during the logging operation. For the MeBo drill rigs we have spectrum gamma ray, magnetic susceptibility, dual induction and acoustic probes available. The latter is also equipped with a temperature sensor for measuring borehole temperature. In this presentation we show examples from MeBo drilling campaigns where core drilling, borehole logging and formation temperature measurements where combined. A focus of this presentation is the analysis of borehole temperature measurements during trip out. We investigate how geothermal flux and lithological changes (i.e. thermal conductivity) influence the bore hole temperature measurement by modeling the temperature evolution within the borehole during drilling and trip out. Climate change in the Arctic has recently become a major scientific issue, and detailed information on the degradation of subsea permafrost on continental shelves in the Arctic is critical for understanding the major cause and effects of global warming, especially the release of greenhouse gases. The subsea permafrost at shallow depths beneath the Arctic continental shelves has significantly higher P‐wave velocities than the surrounding sediments. The distribution of subsea permafrost on Arctic continental shelves has been studied since the 1970s using seismic refraction methods. With seismic refraction data, the seismic velocity and the depth of the upper boundary of subsea permafrost can be determined. However, it is difficult to identify the lower boundary and the internal shape of permafrost. Here, we present two‐dimensional P‐wave velocity models of the continental shelf in the Beaufort Sea by applying the Laplace‐domain full‐waveform inversion method to acquired multichannel seismic reflection data. With the inverted P‐wave velocity model, we identify anomalous high seismic velocities that originated from the subsea permafrost. Information on the two‐dimensional distribution of subsea permafrost on the Arctic continental shelf area, including the upper and lower bounds of subsea permafrost, are presented. Also, the two‐dimensional P‐wave velocity model allows us to estimate the thawing pattern and the shape of subsea permafrost structures. Our proposed P‐wave velocity models were verified by comparison with the previous distribution map of subsea permafrost from seismic refraction analyses, geothermal modeling, and well‐log data.

Highlights • Physical properties obtained from core and log data at the Danube deep sea fan are reported. • Core-log-seismic integration defines stratigraphic framework at the S2 channel. • All data suggest no gas hydrate is present at drill sites within uncertainties of methods employed. Abstract Drilling, coring, and geophysical logging were performed with the MARUM-MeBo200 seafloor drilling rig to investigate gas hydrate occurrences of the Danube deep sea fan, off Romania, Black Sea. Three sites within a channel-levee complex were investigated. Geophysical log data of P-wave velocity, electrical resistivity, and spectral gamma ray are combined with core-derived physical properties of porosity, magnetic susceptibility, and bulk density. Core- and log physical property data are used to define a time-depth conversion by synthetic seismogram modeling, which is then used to interpret the seismic data. Individual polarity reversed reflectors within the stratigraphic column drilled are linked to reduction in P-wave velocity and bulk density. Those reflectors (and associated reflection packages) are accompanied by distinct and systematic changes in sediment porosity, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity. Overall, the sediments at drill site GeoB22605 (MeBo-17) represent the younger (upper) levee sequence of the channel, that has been eroded at drill site GeoB22603 (MeBo-16). Splicing seismic data across the channel from the East (MeBo-16) to the West (MeBo-17) demonstrates the continuation of reflectors underneath the channel. The upper ∼50 m below seafloor (mbsf) at site MeBo-16 do not stratigraphically belong to the same sequence of the (deeper) levee-deposits. Above the marked erosional unconformity, sediments at Site MeBo-16 are likely derived by a mixture of repeated slump-events (identified as seismically transparent units) interbedded with hemi-pelagic sedimentation. Similarly, sediments within the upper ∼20 mbsf at Site MeBo-17 are not stratigraphically the same levee-deposits, but are derived by a mixture of slump-events (also seen in the marked seafloor amphitheatre architecture of a large failure complex extending further upslope) and hemi-pelagic sedimentation. All observations combined show that the seismically observed stratigraphic pattern represents a reflectivity sequence mostly driven by variations in density (porosity) and correspondingly by changes in P-wave velocity and electrical resistivity. All observations from the geophysical log- and core, as well as geochemical data do show no evidence for the presence of any significant gas hydrates within the drilled/cored sequences.

Mud volcanoes (MVs) have been found in various geological settings on passive and active margins but are mostly known from collision zones on Earth. Mud volcanoes are well known to occur on land (e.g. in Azerbaijan), where at least 1000 MVs have been counted. The amount of submarine MVs is believed to be much larger and recent improvements in seafloor mapping led to the discovery of many MVs in all oceans. To contribute to the knowledge of submarine MVs, in particular the internal structure across Venere MV, we conducted a multi-geophysical imaging approach using high resolution multibeam bathymetry, (constraining seafloor expressions), multichannel, and wide-angle seismic data (constraining the internal structure and P-wave velocity distribution). Venere MV is located at the southern rim of the Crotone forearc basin of the Calabrian arc, offshore southern Italy, in a water depth of ~1500 m. The dimension of Venere MV from its bathymetric expression is ~10 km in the EW- and ~7 km in the NS-direction. Two circular cones of ~100 m elevation and ~1.5 km diameter are located in the center of Venere MV. The upper 200 m below the seafloor (bsf) consist of layers with seismic P-wave velocities gradually increasing from 1.53 to 1.7 km/s (sub-) parallel to the seafloor. A prominent reflection ~200 m bsf and a sudden increase of seismic P-wave velocities from 1.7 to 1.8 km/s mark a change with depth in the internal structure, where reflections dip, and seismic P-wave velocities laterally decrease towards the center of Venere MV. The MCS as well as seismic P-wave velocity structure indicate two separate feeder conduits of the two center cones of Venere MV. However, we do not map the roots of the MV, which are at depths beyond our data resolution. Reduced reflectivity occurs ~4 km across the center of the MV 200 m bsf and downwards. We mapped the chaotic reflections of the acoustic basement in depths varying from 500 m to 800 m bsf. Reduced reflectivity of the acoustic basement occurs beneath the center of the MV as well. Mapping of the fault system leads to the subseafloor dimension of Venere MV that exceeds its seafloor dimension by the factor of two.

Over the last two decades sea bed drilling technology has proven to provide a valuable complement to the services of classical drill ships. Especially for shallow drillings up to 200 mbsf and when working in remote areas difficult to access, sea bed drill rigs are a cost-effective alternative. Recent developments especially concerning borehole logging techniques add to the capabilities of sea bed drilling technology.The MARUM-MeBo is a robotic drilling system that is developed since 2004 at the MARUM Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen (Freudenthal and Wefer, 2013). The drill rig is deployed on the sea bed and remotely controlled from the vessel. It is used for core drilling in soft sediments as well as hard rocks in the deep sea. Especially since an upgrade in 2007/2008 for the use of wireline drilling technique, the first-generation drill rig MARUM-MeBo70 with a drilling capacity of about 70 m was successfully deployed on more than 15 research expeditions. Since 2014 the second-generation drill rig MARUM-MeBo200 with an increased drilling capacity of up to 200 m below sea floor is successfully in operation.In this presentation we focus on results of three recent drilling campaigns, exemplifying the exploitation of the potential of the sea bed drilling technology:In early 2017 the MeBo70 was deployed from the ice breaking vessel RV POLARSTERN on the West Antarctic shelf (Gohl et al., 2017), an area difficult to access by a drill ship. We were able to recover a sedimentary sequence of the upper Cretaceous time period as one of the very few terrigenous records from this time in Antarctica. This sequence indicates that about 92 to 83 Mio years ago at a paleolatitude of about 82°S this area was covered by a temperate coastal rain forest, making any Antarctic ice sheet formation at this time period unlikely (Klages et al., in press). Also, in 2017 the MeBo70 was deployed in the Arctic off Svalbard. Next to coring a temperature probe was used to assess in situ temperatures and local geothermal gradients (Riedel et al. 2018). Combining these temperature data with the porewater geochemistry of the drilled cores Wallmann et al (2018) were able to prove the effect of isostatic rebound after deglaciation on gas hydrate dissociation. In late 2017 the MeBo200 was deployed in the Black Sea. Geophysical borehole log data of P-wave velocity, electrical resistivity, and spectral gamma ray were combined with core-derived physical properties of porosity, magnetic susceptibility, and bulk density and compared with seismic data of the region (Riedel et al., in press). This study shows the potential of core-log seismic integration for shallow drilling campaigns conducted with a sea bed drill rig. The northeastern Lau Basin is one of the fastest opening and magmatically most active back-arc regions on Earth. Although the current pattern of plate boundaries and motions in this complex mosaic of microplates is fairly well understood, the structure and evolution of the back-arc crust are not. We present refraction seismic, multichannel seismic and gravity data from a 300 km long east-west oriented transect crossing the Niuafo’ou Microplate (back-arc), the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Centre (FRSC) and the Tofua Volcanic Arc at 17°20’S. Our P wave tomography model shows strong lateral variations in the thickness and velocity-depth distribution of the crust. The thinnest crust is present in the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center, suggesting active seafloor spreading there. In the much thicker crust of the volcanic arc we identify a region of anomalously low velocities, indicative of partial melts. Surprisingly, the melt reservoir is located at ~17 km distance to the volcanic front, supporting the hypothesis that melts are deviated from the volcanic arc towards the FRSC in sub-crustal domains. We identify two distinct regions in the back-arc crust, representing different opening phases of the northeastern Lau Basin. During initial extension, likely dominated by rifting, crust of generally lower upper-crustal velocities formed. During an advanced opening phase, likely dominated by seafloor spreading, crust of higher upper-crustal velocities formed and is now up to 11 km thick. This thickening is the result of magmatic underplating, which is supported by elevated upper mantle temperatures in this region.

Highlights • A modified cementation theory is developed by introducing generalized pressure-dependent normalized contact-cemented radii. • A generalized effective medium model is proposed to merge the effective medium theory and cementation theory. • Modeling and inversion schemes are proposed to quantify hydrate saturation and morphology from laboratory and well-log data. • Hydrates mainly grow as matrix-supporting form (~54%) in sands and as pore-filling form (~59%) in clay-rich marine sediments. Abstract Numerous models have been developed for prediction of gas hydrate saturation based on the microstructural relationship between gas hydrates and sediment grains. However, quantification of hydrate saturation and morphology from elastic properties has been hindered by failing to account for complex hydrate distributions. Here, we develop a generalized effective medium model by applying the modified Hashin-Shtrikman bounds to a newly developed cementation theory. This model is validated by experimental data for synthetic methane and tetrahydrofuran hydrates. Good comparison of model predictions with experimental measurements not only reveals its ability to merge the results of contact cementation theory and effective medium theory, but also indicates its feasibility for characterizing complex morphologies. Moreover, the results of inverting acoustic measurements quantitatively confirm that for synthetic samples in “excess-gas” condition gas hydrates mainly occur as a hybrid-cementing morphology with a low percentage of pore-filling morphology, whereas for pressure-core hydrate-bearing sediments in natural environments they exist as matrix-supporting and pore-filling morphologies with a very low percentage of hybrid-cementing morphology. The hydrate saturations estimated from sonic and density logs in several regions including northern Cascadia margin (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 311, Hole U1326D and Hole U1327E), Alaska North Slope (Mount Elbert test well) and Mackenzie Delta (Mallik 5L-38), are comparable to the referenced hydrate saturations derived from core data and resistivity, and/or nuclear magnetic resonance log data, confirming validity and applicability of our model. Furthermore, our results indicate that ~8% hybrid-cementing, ~33% matrix-supporting and ~59% pore-filling hydrates may coexist in the fine-grained and clay-rich marine sediments on the northern Cascadia margin, whereas ~10% hybrid-cementing, ~54% matrix-supporting and ~36% pore-filling hydrates may coexist in the coarse-grained and sand-dominated terrestrial sediments of the Alaska North Slope and Mackenzie Delta.

We report on the geochemistry of hydrocarbons and pore waters down to 62.5 mbsf, collected by drilling with the MARUM‐MeBo70 and by gravity coring at the Lunde pockmark in the Vestnesa Ridge. Our data document the origin and transformations of volatiles feeding gas emissions previously documented in this region. Gas hydrates are present where a fracture network beneath the pockmark focusses migration of thermogenic hydrocarbons characterized by their C1/C2+ and stable isotopic compositions (δ2H‐CH4, δ13C‐CH4). Measured geothermal gradients (~80°C km‐1) and known formation temperatures (>70°C) suggest that those hydrocarbons are formed at depths >800 mbsf. A combined analytical/modeling approach, including concentration and isotopic mass balances, reveals that pockmark sediments experience diffuse migration of thermogenic hydrocarbons. However, at sites without channeled flow this appears to be limited to depths > ~50 mbsf. At all sites we document a contribution of microbial methanogenesis to the overall carbon cycle that includes a component of secondary carbonate reduction (CR) – i.e. reduction of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) generated by anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in the uppermost methanogenic zone. AOM and CR rates are spatially variable within the pockmark and are highest at high‐flux sites. These reactions are revealed by 13C‐DIC depletions at the sulfate‐methane interface at all sites. However, 13C‐CH4 depletions are only observed at the low methane flux sites because changes in the isotopic composition of the overall methane pool are masked at high‐flux sites. 13C‐depletions of TOC suggest that at seeps sites, methane‐derived carbon is incorporated into de novo synthesized biomass.
