This paper provides a broad but comprehensive foundation for understanding the widespread practice of using the bioelectric properties of plants to create music and sound. We begin by describing how plant biosignals are harvested by several commercial electronic devices and a custom-designed interface. Then, we analyze large data samples of potential musical content generated by such technologies. Next we investigate the artistic and musical choices artists make when they interpret this data, analyzing work by British sonic artist Augustine Leudar, the Philadelphia Museum of Art7s Data Garden Quartet, and Japanese composer Mamoru Fujieda. Finally we position the entire enterprise within a posthumanist semiotic framework, specifically referencing work by Uexkull, Deleuze, Krampen, Watkins, and Marder. Despite the intensifying interest in flash drought both within the United States and globally, moist tropical landscapes have largely escaped the attention of the flash drought community. Because these ecozones are acclimatized to receiving regular, near-daily precipitation, they are especially vulnerable to rapid-drying events. This is particularly true within the Caribbean Sea basin where numerous small islands lack the surface and groundwater resources to cope with swiftly developing drought conditions. This study fills the tropical flash drought gap by examining the pervasiveness of flash drought across the pan-Caribbean region using a recently proposed criterion based on the evaporative demand drought index (EDDI). The EDDI identifies 46 instances of widespread flash drought "outbreaks" in which significant fractions of the pan-Caribbean encounter rapid drying over 15 days and then maintain this condition for another 15 days. Moreover, a self-organizing maps (SOM) classification reveals a tendency for flash drought to assume recurring typologies concentrated in one of the Central American, South American, or Greater Antilles coastlines, although a simultaneous, Caribbean-wide drought is never observed within the 40-yr (1981–2020) period examined. Furthermore, three of the six flash drought typologies identified by the SOM initiate most often during Phase 2 of the Madden–Julian oscillation. Collectively, these findings motivate the need to more critically examine the transferability of flash drought definitions into the global tropics, particularly for small water-vulnerable islands where even island-wide flash droughts may only occupy a few pixels in most reanalysis datasets. Significance Statement: The purpose of this study is to understand if flash drought occurs in tropical environments, specifically the Caribbean. Flash droughts represent a quickly evolving drought, which have particularly acute impacts on agriculture and often catch stakeholders by surprise as conditions evolve rapidly from wet to dry conditions. Our results indicate that flash droughts occur with regular periodicity in the Caribbean. Expansive flash droughts tend to occur in coherent subregional clusters. Recreational angling is a very popular outdoor activity that is weather-dependent, although investigations of this relationship are rare. This study used weekly fishing effort (2015–2021) estimates throughout coastal Louisiana to understand how effort changed in response to weather conditions. Although we found evidence for some effect of all the weather variables, temperature reported the greatest number of monthly effects, along with an overall declining effect throughout the year. We also examined how tropical storms and hurricanes reduce fishing effort, but that effort recovers rapidly after the storm. Finally, we examined fishing effort during the first year of the pandemic (2020) compared to previous years and found some monthly increases exceeding 100% of normal effort. Understanding angler motivations remains an important part of fishery management, and in a future with changes to weather, hurricanes, and global health crises, we can now know more about how environmental factors change angling effort. Defoliation caused by strong tropical cyclones can modify the partitioning of incident solar radiation between the sensible, latent, and substrate heat fluxes. While previous work has shown hurricane defoliation to warm near-surface air temperature along its track, this study more directly contextualizes the warming to human heat stress and exposure via the heat index (HI). For this case study, the spatial extent and temporal persistence of defoliation produced by Hurricane Laura (2020) in southwestern Louisiana was characterized using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The defoliated land surface was then assimilated into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 4.2 and compared to a control, normal-foliage simulation for the 30 days following landfall. Over southwest Louisiana, the largest HI increase occurred at 0600 UTC (1:00 AM LT) with an average increase of + 0.25 °C, and the exposure time to HI ≥ 30 °C increased by 8.1% after accounting for the defoliated landscape. Meanwhile, Cameron, Louisiana, the site of Laura's landfall where defoliation was most severe, cumulatively experienced an extra 33 h of HI values exceeding 26 °C, while mean HI increased by 1.2 °C at 0300 UTC. Additional WRF experiments were performed with altered "landfall" years of 2017 and 2018 to determine the sensitivity of defoliation-driven HI changes to the ambient synoptic conditions. While synoptic conditions modulated the magnitude of increase, HIs nonetheless experienced statistically significant increases in both hypothetical "landfall" years. Such findings are valuable for emergency managers and community health officials because overnight minimum temperatures are a strong indicator of heat mortality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Objective: The study examined psychological capital’s (PsyCap) role in the relations between anxiety-related patterns of thinking (rumination, obsessive-compulsive disorder, test anxiety) and students’ academic adjustment. It argued the relations are not direct but are mediated by PsyCap. Participants: Participants were 250 s-year or higher university undergraduates in Israel; 60.4% in second year, 35.6% in third, 4% in fourth; 111 men (44%), 139 women (56%); age 18–40 years (mean age = 25, SD = 2.52). Participants were recruited through flyers distributed on campus. Methods: Six questionnaires tested study hypotheses: one gathered demographic information; five assessed anxiety-related patterns of thinking, PsyCap, and academic adjustment. Results: Findings showed PsyCap mediated relations between anxiety-related patterns of thinking (rumination, obsessive-compulsive disorder, test anxiety) and academic adjustment and was a crucial factor in explaining variance in academic adjustment. The increasing availability of affordable finite elementmodeling software and computational fluid dynamics codes have given today's sailing yacht designers tools that, in the past, were only available to designers of yachts competing in the most high-profile events. This paper provides a case study on the structural design of the International America's Cup Class Yacht Stars & Stripes USA-34, which won the U.S. defender series, the Citizen Cup, leading up to the 29th America's Cup competition in 1995. The authors have recently been able to publicly share this information, and feel that the problem-solving approach is of direct use to many of today's designers. The design approach is twofold, the first being the use of Finite Element Analysis to minimize draginducing local deformations. Over 80 finite element models were analyzed with varying configurations, starting with an initial baseline structure based on the previous boat, USA-11. These structural improvements reduced local hull deflection from5 to 6 mmper meter on the previous design to less than 1 mm per meter on the USA-34 design. The second part of the design approach isolates the hydrodynamic effects of global bending under rig tension. Illustrative tank tests are provided to demonstrate how the global sagging of the hull, caused by rig tension, can often increase the resistance of a yacht (especially one built for racing). As part of a series of steps taken to mitigate the effect of rig tension, a novel design was developed, with soft patches and flexible structure to permit low-costmodification of the hull in the boatyard, giving approximately a 225mmincrease in waterline length and 75 mm reduction in beam if needed--a modification that was made to USA-34 prior to winning the finals of the Citizen Cup, and at a cost of under $500. The reduction of drag-inducing local hull form deformations, and the development of the cost-saving hull modification concept, demonstrate how a creative designer can take advantage of the finite elementmodeling tools that are now widely available. Background Exostosin 1/2 (EXT1/2) and neural cell adhesion molecule 1 (NCAM1) associated membranous lupus nephritis (MLN) may represent distinct disease phenotypes with prognostic significance. Methods We searched our archives for patients with systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) and at least two kidney biopsies demonstrating MLN. Each biopsy was stained for EXT1 and NCAM1 and scored as positive or negative. Histopathologic and clinical data were reviewed. Results We identified 31 patients with a clinical diagnosis of SLE and at least two kidney biopsies with MLN. A total of 28 patients (90%) showed concordant staining for EXT1 and NCAM1 in both biopsies; 8 patients (26%) were EXT1 positive and NCAM1 negative, 18 patients (58%) were EXT1 negative and NCAM1 negative and 2 patients (7%) were EXT1 negative and NCAM1 positive. A total of three patients (10%) had discordant EXT1 staining between their first and last biopsies; two patients (7%) were EXT1 positive in their first biopsy and EXT1 negative in the last biopsy and one patient (3%) was EXT1 negative in his first biopsy and EXT1 positive in the last biopsy. Compared with the EXT1-negative cohort at the time of the first biopsy, the EXT1-positive cohort had a higher average estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR; 141 versus 108 mL/min/1.73 m2; P  = 0.04), lower average percent global glomerulosclerosis (0.5 versus 12%; P  = 0.05), lower average interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (2.5 versus 11.7%; P  = 0.06) and lower average total National Institutes of Health (NH) chronicity scores (0.75 versus 2.33; P  = 0.05). On long-term follow-up, the rate of change in eGFR did not significantly differ between the two groups (P  = 0.24). One EXT1-positive patient (12.5%) developed stage 4 chronic kidney disease (CKD) or end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) compared with four patients (20%) in the EXT-negative group and two of the three EXT1-discordant patients (P  = 0.38). Conclusions We performed the largest retrospective repeat-biopsy study to evaluate EXT1 and NCAM1 autoantigens in MLN. Our data demonstrate that EXT1 positivity is associated with better kidney function at the time of diagnosis and raises the possibility that EXT1 status may change throughout the disease course of MLN. Despite prompting persistent meteorological changes, severe defoliation following a tropical cyclone (TC) landfall has received relatively little attention and is largely overlooked within hurricane preparedness and recovery planning. Changes to near-track vegetation can modify evapotranspiration for months after tropical cyclone passage, thereby altering boundary layer moisture and energy fluxes that drive the local water cycle. This study seeks to understand potential spatial and temporal changes in defoliation-driven meteorological conditions using Hurricane Michael (2018) as a testbed. In this sensitivity study, two Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model simulations, a normal-landscape and a post-TC scenario, are compared to determine how a defoliation scar placed along Michael's path alters surface heat fluxes, temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation near the storm's track. In the month following the foliage reduction, WRF resolves a 0.7°C 2-m temperature increase, with the greatest changes occurring at night. Meanwhile, the simulations produce changes to the sensible and latent heat fluxes of +8.3 and −13.9 W m−2, respectively, while average relative humidity decreases from 73% to 70.1%. Although the accumulated precipitation in the defoliated simulation was larger along a narrow corridor paralleling and downwind of the hurricane track, neither simulation satisfactorily replicated post-Michael precipitation patterns as recorded by NCEP Stage IV QPE, casting doubt as to whether the downwind enhancement was exclusively due to the defoliation scar. This sensitivity analysis provides insight into the types of changes that may be possible following rapid and widespread defoliation during a TC landfall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Membranous nephropathy is an uncommon cause of nephrotic syndrome in pediatrics. Methods: We reviewed our kidney biopsy records for patients ≤ 20 years of age with membranous nephropathy without evidence of systemic lupus erythematosus within 6 months of biopsy (January 1995–September 2020). Staining for PLA2R, NELL1, THSD7A, SEMA3B, EXT2 (3 biopsies), and IgG-subclass were performed. Results: Sixteen children (≤ 12 years) and 25 adolescents (13–20 years) were identified. Four children and 15 adolescents showed autoantigen positivity: PLA2R+/SEMA3B- (13), SEMA3B+/PLA2R+ (2), SEMA3B+/PLA2R− (1), NELL1 (1), EXT2+ (2), and THSD7A (0). Co-morbidities associated with PLA2R positivity included IPEX syndrome, active hepatitis B, Von Hippel Lindau syndrome, solitary kidney, type 1 diabetes, hyperuricemia, pregnancy (1), obesity (3), type II diabetes, H. pylori, viral prodrome, and nephrolithiasis. The SEMA3B+/PLA2R− adolescent was pregnant, the NELL1+ adolescent was obese, and the two EXT2+ adolescents eventually met the clinical criteria for lupus (4, 9 years post-biopsy). Co-morbidities among the remaining 24 patients included remote hepatitis B (2), Down's syndrome, lysinuric protein intolerance, recurrent UTIs, hypothyroidism, pregnancy (3), and obesity (2). Follow-up data was available for 12 children and 16 adolescents. Of the 12 children, 6 achieved complete remission, 4 achieved partial remission, and 2 had no response to treatment (1 transplant). Of the 16 adolescents, 4 achieved complete remission, 4 achieved partial remission, and 8 had no response to treatment (3 transplants). A child with "full-house" immunofluorescence staining achieved spontaneous disease remission. Conclusion: Our non-lupus membranous nephropathy cohort represents one of the largest pediatric studies to date. Most private law theorists claim to analyze private law from an internal point of view; a vantagepoint within which private law doctrine, institutions and procedure enjoy pride of place. Private law theory of a generation ago distinguished the internal from external points of view, valorizing the former and criticizing the latter for ignoring the normativity of private law or for mistaking private law for public law or regulation. The New Private Law, by contrast, asserts the complementarity of internal and external points of view, partly by emphasizing the value of functionalist analyses of legal form. In this article, we canvas leading accounts of the internal point of view in private law (provided by corrective justice and civil recourse theorists, respectively) and identify their shortcomings: notably, their inability to ground assertions about the normative and explanatory priority of the internal point of view, and about its relationship (whether of exclusivity or complementarity) to external points of view. We offer an alternative, and we think better, rendering of the internal point of view, drawing on the work of John Finnis. Amongst other things, our account vindicates the New Private Law's alluring but elusive promise of perspectival integration, showing how private law may be understood as an interlocking set of practices of public practical deliberation equally concerned with reasoned compliance and behavioral conformity with practically reasonable laws. There is growing use of primary prevention interventions which aim to tackle adolescent relationship abuse (ARA) through raising awareness of the issue, changing attitudes that underpin abusive behaviors, increasing knowledge and skills to promote help-seeking, and to ultimately lower the incidence of ARA victimization and perpetration. To date, several reviews have explored the effectiveness of existing ARA prevention programs. However, the reviews often focus on a single type of intervention, setting, and/or condition, making identifying, summarizing, and appraising the available evidence challenging. Meaning it can be difficult to ascertain what works for whom and under what circumstances. Therefore, this umbrella review provides an up-to-date re-synthesis and re-analysis of reviews of the ARA prevention literature, culminating in a comprehensive summary of the efficacy of program content, design, delivery, and evaluation. A systematic search of seven cross-disciplinary databases yielded 21 reviews and meta-analyses reporting the effectiveness of school-based ARA prevention programs, published prior to June 2023. This review examined review objectives, program characteristics (e.g., sample size and features, implementer details), outcome measures and findings and reported 11 determinants associated with intervention success. Educational policies are fundamental to the effective running of an education system, and to good educational governance within that system. Nevertheless, educational policy making in Jamaica cannot be described as a systematic affair, although there are some processes in place to ensure this is the case. This article locates the practice of educational policy making within establish frameworks - providing examples and evidence of where and how these have been used, and their impacts. This article also provides examples of policies developed and implemented, not located within any established framework, thus raising more questions about their coherence and likely impacts. The main conclusions in this article are that education policy making in Jamaica is a fluid and imprecise 'science' with mixed evidence of stakeholder engagement, and which as a result hampers the potential of the system to galvanise widespread support from those who must deliver and/or otherwise experience the policies of government. In recent years a considerable body of psychological research has explored the relationship between membership of socio-cultural groups and personal pain perception. Rather less systematic attention has, however, been accorded to how such group membership(s) might influence individual attitudes towards the pain of others. In this paper, immersion in the culture of competitive sport, widely regarded as being exaggeratedly tolerant of risky behaviours around pain, is taken as a case-in-point with students of Physical Education (PE) in tertiary education as the key focus. PE students are highly-immersed in competitive sporting culture both academically and (typically) practically, and also represent a key nexus of cross-generational transmission regarding the norms of sport itself. Their attitudes towards the pain that others should reasonably tolerate during a range of activities, sporting and otherwise, were evaluated through a direct comparison with those of peers much less immersed in competitive sporting culture. In total, N=301 (144 PE, 157 non-PE) undergraduate students in the UK responded to a vignette-based survey. Therein, all participants were required to rate the pain (on a standard 0-10 scale) at which a standardised "other" should desist engagement with a set of five defined sporting and non-sporting tasks, each with weak and strong task severities. Results indicated that PE students were significantly more likely to expect others to persevere through higher levels of pain than their non-PE peers, but only during the sport-related tasks – an effect further magnified when task severity was high. In other tasks, there was no significant difference between groups, or valence of the effect was actually reversed. It is argued that the findings underscore some extant knowledge about the relationship between acculturated attitudes to pain, while also having practical implications for understanding sport-based pedagogy, and its potentially problematic role in the ongoing reproduction of a "culture of risk." The cosmology of the Timaeus is both a likely story and an allegory of its own failure. It takes place within the nonspace of the khōra, a realm accessible only through bastard reasoning that we can perceive only as if in a dream. The Timaeus is an unfinalizable logos in which each moment of positing is also a moment of irony and interrogation, of simultaneous acceptance and active separation, of choric space. A long line of research in Positive Psychology highlights Psychological Capital (PsyCap) as a key factor in forecasting post-secondary students' academic adjustment. Such work, however, focuses on the adaptation of typical students. Studies with a focus on exceptional students, such as those with learning difficulties, pinpoint their marked disadvantages but have not considered PsyCap as a positive construct in their academic adjustment. This study compared the PsyCap and academic adjustment of 251 students with learning disabilities (LD, 40 males and 83 females, mean age 26), or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, 31 males and 97 females, mean age 27) to 250 typical counterparts (83 males and 167 females, mean age 25). It was designed to clarify whether PsyCap mediated the relationship between participant group and academic adjustment. Findings suggested LD/ADHD students manifest lower levels of PsyCap and academic adjustment. PsyCap was a significant mediator in the relationship between participant group and academic adjustment. Findings also pointed to a strong, positive relationship between PsyCap and academic adjustment, with a uniform magnitude for the two groups. To monitor changes in broiler behaviour related to animal health and welfare, farmers typically observe their flocks using manual observation. However, due to the labour intensive and continuous aspect of this task, the analysis of broiler behaviour could be automated using camera technology. This paper proposes a proof-of-concept camera surveillance system based on the automated detection and tracking of broilers to monitor activity bouts using unsupervised 2D trajectory clustering. Firstly, a convolutional neural network-based detector was trained and tested on our labelled dataset which resulted in a precision, recall and f score of 0.98, 0.90 and 0.94, respectively. Using a tracking-by-detection approach, the proposed system was able to track chickens across video frames with a multi-object tracking accuracy of 74.7%. A component-based feature saliency Gaussian mixture model (CFSGMM) was subsequently generated and applied to objectively cluster the trajectories based on their spatiotemporal information. Nineteen features were extracted from the trajectories, representing both static and dynamic characteristics of broiler movement, and three activity classes were identified: 'least active/resting,' 'active' and 'highly-active.' The proposed method was validated on one-minute monocular video sequences. CFSGMM was applied to cluster 2D trajectories relating to broiler activity bouts within the commercial rearing environment with an agreement ranging from 6.0 to 99.7% when compared to human observation. We demonstrate the potential of the computer vision system to monitor overt, short-term changes in broiler activity associated with on-farm events and discuss the opportunities of leveraging the technology to monitor longer term changes in welfare state. Private law scholarship is experiencing a reawakening in the United States with the rise of the New Private Law. New Private Lawyers have emphasized our common commitment to the scholarly interest and practical importance held by legal concepts; a belief that private law ought to be analyzed (in part) from an internal point of view; and a conviction that functionalist and conceptual analyses of private law doctrines, procedures and institutions are, or can be, complementary. We are also joined in criticism of aspects of American legal realism and in lament over some of its continuing legacies in private law. However, New Private Law scholars have yet to articulate a scholarly methodology that defines and differentiates our work. I argue that the New Private Law is rooted in a shared—if implicit—new formalist methodology and provide the first programmatic explanation of it. The Article does several things. It provides a clear statement of methodological tenets of the new formalism. It relates these to wider developments in general jurisprudence, with particular attention to scholarship on law and practical reason. It explains the sense in which the new formalism is novel, especially relative to older varieties of legal formalism. It distances the new formalism from foolish and implausible claims prominent in pejorative renderings of legal formalism. It shows how the new formalism is reflected in New Private Law scholarship. And it explains how a clear grasp of new formalist methodology enables reconciliation of the otherwise baffling eclecticism in the New Private Law while promising new and fruitful avenues for its future development. The trade wind inversion (TWI) serves as an important stabilizing mechanism in the tropical North Atlantic (TNA) region, including the Caribbean basin. Previous studies have diagnosed the TWI using in situ observations and radiosondes, typically over tropical islands. However, studies relying on these point measurements are unable to discern the climatology and evolution of the TWI over the rest of the TNA. This study addresses this gap in the literature through the use of high‐resolution ERA5 reanalysis model level data. Due to the advances in the ERA line of reanalysis products, ERA5 now provides vertical level resolution as fine as ~4 mb in the lower troposphere, enabling the identification of shallow inversions, such as the TWI, consistently on a climatological time scale in remote regions of the world. While still coarser than observed soundings, this reanalysis‐based approach provides a first attempt in understanding TNA TWI variability and its strength and frequency trends from 1979 to 2019. The TWI climatology constructed here finds consilience with previous modelling and observational studies in terms of the spatial variability of the TWI base and strength across this domain. Stronger and more frequent TWIs are noted across the central TNA across all seasons. Results from a Mann–Kendall analysis reveals increasing trends in TWI frequency and strength that vary spatially across the domain based on season. The most widespread and strongest increasing TWI frequency and strength signal is over the central TNA from December to July. Due to the regionalization of trends noted, potential regional forcing mechanisms responsible for these changes are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this investigation was to identify parameters at initial contact that would predict the subsequent maximum ankle inversion angle during cutting movements. We conducted a secondary data analysis and calculated kinematics of 1,400 cuttings performed by 46 male soccer athletes. The movement task consisted of an approach run, followed by a pre-planned cutting movement. A linear mixed regression model was applied to predict the maximum ankle inversion angle during the first 100 ms of ground contact. The prediction was made based on six predictors that describe change-of-direction intensity and foot placement as found to be relevant in the literature. The model explained 62% of the variance of maximum ankle inversion angles. A change of the main predictors (foot rotation, cutting angle and initial ankle inversion) by 1 SD caused a reduction of the subsequent maximum ankle inversion angle by 2.6–4.4°. Regarding the intensity of a change-of-direction movement, cutting angle seems to have a higher influence on maximum ankle inversion angle than approach velocity. With respect to the individual foot positioning, the maximum ankle inversion angle can be reduced by increasing exorotation and eversion of the foot while shifting towards forefoot landing. Concepts of race are deeply implicated in concepts of national borders, and inherent in those concepts are fear, aggression, and violence. Such concepts are historical and in no way natural. This history has been traced by Foucault and others. Derrida's "infinite hospitality" offers an alternative way of conceptualizing identity. He argues for a radical openness to the other. Camus's "L'hôte" problematizes the concepts of hospitality, freedom, and identity in the French colonial context. These are not fated or decreed. Like Daru and his prisoner in Camus, we have a choice. That choice is never outside of a context. And that context may pervert our intentions. But we do not have to choose the prison of the given; we can envision a world of infinite, nomadic hospitality, and of openness to the other, even as we acknowledge that such openness may mean that we, as we understand ourselves, no longer exist. Background: Proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal IgG deposits (PGNMID) is a glomerular disease defined by non-organized glomerular deposits of heavy and light chain–restricted immunoglobulin and is rarely reported in children. Methods: We characterized a series of nine pediatric patients from two academic centers with biopsy-proven PGNMID and additionally describe two patients with monotypic IgG in the setting of IgM deposition. Results: Each patient presented with hematuria and/or proteinuria; however, only five had elevated serum creatinine. Prodromal or concurrent infection was identified in six patients, low C3 in five, and alternate complement pathway gene variants in two. No monoclonal serum proteins were identified in five tested patients. Seven patients had monotypic deposits composed of IgG3-λ, two showed IgG3-κ, and one each IgG1 and IgG3 with lambda dominance in the setting of IgM deposition. The glomerular pattern was predominantly mesangial proliferative or membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN). Treatment and outcomes were variable; four patients have recent PGNMID diagnoses and therefore minimal follow up, one had relatively stable kidney function for over a decade, and six experienced kidney failure, with four receiving transplants. Recurrent deposits of the same isotype were identified in five of six transplanted kidneys, corresponding to three of four transplanted patients. One of these patients developed PGNMID recurrences in three separate kidney allografts over a 20-year disease course. Conclusions: Our study emphasizes the need for upfront IgG subclass investigation in pediatric mesangial or MPGN with IgG deposition and monotypic or biased light-chain staining. Background and Objective: Abaloparatide, an anabolic osteoporosis treatment administered by subcutaneous (SC) injection, increases bone mineral density (BMD) and reduces fracture risk in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. The abaloparatide-solid Microstructured Transdermal System [abaloparatide-sMTS (Kindeva, St Paul, MN, USA)], which delivers abaloparatide intradermally, is in development to provide an alternative method for abaloparatide delivery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of subjects to self-administer abaloparatide-sMTS, based on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic markers. Methods: In this single-arm, open-label, Phase 1b study, 22 healthy postmenopausal women aged 50–85 years with low BMD were trained to self-administer abaloparatide-sMTS 300 μg once daily to the thigh for 5 min for 29 days. The primary endpoint was systemic exposure to abaloparatide. Secondary endpoints included percent change from baseline in serum procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (s-PINP), patient experience, and safety. Results: All 22 subjects completed the study. At baseline, mean age was 65.2 years, mean total hip T-score was − 1.32, and mean lumbar spine T-score was − 1.98. On Day 1, the median time to reach maximum concentration (Tmax) for abaloparatide-sMTS was 0.33 h and geometric mean (CV %) maximum concentration (Cmax) and area under the concentration-time curve from time 0 to the time of the last quantifiable concentration (AUC0–t) were 447 (38.0) pg/mL and 678 (45.3) pg·h/mL, respectively; the pharmacokinetic profile was similar on Days 15 and 29. Median percentage change in s-PINP was 45.4% and 64.4% at Days 15 and 29, respectively. The most common adverse events (AEs) were application site erythema, pain, and swelling, which were mostly of mild or moderate severity. No AEs led to study drug withdrawal and no serious AEs were reported. The success rate for self-administration at first application was 99.7%, and subject acceptability was high (~ 4.5 on a 5-point Likert Scale). Conclusions: Subjects successfully self-administered abaloparatide-sMTS, which provided a consistent pharmacokinetic profile over 29 days and produced s-PINP increases from baseline similar to that observed in the pivotal trial with abaloparatide-SC. Observed patient experience along with the clinical data support continued clinical development of abaloparatide-sMTS. Treatment options for osteoporosis include drugs that prevent bone resorption and anabolic agents that build new bone. Currently, all bone anabolic agents are delivered by subcutaneous injection. However, some patients do not like injectable treatments, which can negatively impact patients' adherence to prescribed medication. In this study, we describe a novel mode of administration, the abaloparatide-solid Microstructured Transdermal System (abaloparatide-sMTS), which is applied to the thigh for 5 min and delivers abaloparatide intradermally. The study showed that this new method delivered abaloparatide into the blood as effectively as subcutaneous injections and demonstrated signs of activity in the body. Study participants were satisfied with abaloparatide-sMTS and found it easy to use. Recent work of fiduciary theory has provided conceptual synthesis requisite to understanding core fiduciary principles and the structure of fiduciary liability. However, normative questions have received only sporadic attention. What values animate fiduciary law? How does, or should, fiduciary law prove responsive to them? While in other areas of private law theory--notably, tort theory--pioneering scholars went directly at normative questions like these, fiduciary theory has been exceptional in the reticence shown toward them. The reticence is sensible. Fiduciary principles are the product of equity's most extended and convoluted program of supplementing surrounding law. They span several distinct forms of relationship arising in markedly different settings. In this Article, I develop a framework for analyzing the morality of fiduciary law. The framework accomplishes four things. First, it situates questions about the morality of fiduciary law within the context of the general jurisprudential literature on the nature of law and its normativity. Second, it explains the sense in which fiduciary law is normatively complex by virtue of being structurally biplanar, with general equitable principles (duty-imposing rules) overlain upon legal and equitable principles (including, notably, power-conferring rules) that define and enable legal forms of relationship characterized as fiduciary in equity. Third, it distinguishes the general morality of fiduciary duties from the special morality of fiduciary relationship types. Fourth, and finally, it provides an overview of loci of value in fiduciary relationships, canvassing considerations of general and special morality that give salience to the interests of parties, third parties, and the public in rules that enable and constrain the performance of fiduciary mandates. Barriers to effective medical therapy are numerous and include difficulties with effective and sustained control of intraocular pressure (IOP) and adherence to prescribed anti‐glaucoma drop regimens. In an effort to circumvent these challenges, a number of new anti‐glaucoma therapies with sustained effects have emerged. Methods for sustained delivery of prostaglandin analogs are being intensely investigated and many are in human clinical trials. Intracameral devices include the following: Allergan's Durysta™ Bimatoprost SR, Envisia Therapeutics' ENV515 travoprost implant, Glaukos' iDose™, Ocular Therapeutix's OTX‐TIC travoprost implant, and Santen's polycaprolactone implant with PGE2‐derivative DE‐117. Other prostaglandin‐based technologies include Allergan's bimatoprost ring (placed in the conjunctival fornix), Ocular Therapeutics' OTX‐TP intracanalicular travoprost implant, subconjunctival latanoprost in a liposomal formulation, and the PGE2 derivative PGN 9856‐isopropyl ester that is applied to the periorbital skin. Exciting breakthroughs in gene therapy include using viral vectors to correct defective genes such as MYOC or to modulate gonioimplant fibrosis, CRISPR technology to edit MYOC or to alter aquaporin to reduce aqueous humor production, and siRNA technology to silence specific genes. Stem cell technology can repopulate depleted tissues or, in the case of Neurotech's Renexus® NT‐501 intravitreal implant, serve as a living drug delivery device that continuously secretes neurotrophic factors. Other unique approaches involve nanotechnology, nasal sprays that deliver drug directly to the optic nerve and noninvasive alternating current stimulation of surviving cells in the optic nerve. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of QD or BID 0.02% netarsudil ophthalmic solution (Aerie Pharmaceuticals) on intraocular pressure (IOP) in normotensive dogs and to describe any adverse effects. Animals studied: Normotensive Labrador retriever dogs were included in this study: 10 received netarsudil in one eye and artificial tears in the contralateral eye QD, and 10 received netarsudil in one eye and artificial tears in the contralateral eye BID. Procedures: Intraocular pressure curves were acquired over a 3‐day acclimation period, 5‐day dosing period (QD or BID—10 dogs/group), and 3‐day recovery period. Toxicity was assessed daily using slit‐lamp biomicroscopy and the semiquantitative preclinical ocular toxicology scoring system. Results: Once‐daily dosing did not lower IOP over the entire 5‐day dosing period (95% CI 0.1 to −0.9 mm Hg, P =.20) or on the last day of dosing (95% CI 0.4 to −0.9 mm Hg, P =.65). Twice‐daily dosing resulted in a statistically significant, but clinically unimportant, IOP reduction over the entire 5‐day dosing period (−0.6 mm Hg; 95% CI 0.05 to −1.1 mm Hg, P =.02) and on the last day of dosing (−0.9 mm Hg; 95% CI 0.2 to −1.5 mm Hg, P =.003). Adverse events were limited to transient mild‐to‐moderate conjunctival hyperemia during the dosing phase in eyes receiving netarsudil vs control (P <.0001). Conclusions: Netarsudil 0.02% ophthalmic solution twice daily resulted in a small, statistically significant, but clinically unimportant, IOP reduction in normotensive dogs. School leaders in England have a huge task to mediate factors in a school's environment (regulatory/legal and institutional). Rapid and sometimes conflicting policy agendas for improved performance have become a main preoccupation of school leaders as they jostle to keep their jobs as they wrestle to implement the latest government mandate. As a result, many school leaders ignore, at best, or are unprepared for, at worse, how to deal with institutional impacts and challenges associated with unprecedented levels of migration, and race discrimination. This is compounded by school leaders' lack of understanding of, for example, personal and structural racism, and how these collude against attempts to build racially inclusive school environments. Through an ecological model this paper argues that in spite of performativity pressures, school leaders should develop skills, attributes and knowledge in areas of curriculum diversity, recruitment and career progression, leading change for race diversity that (i) reflects the contexts within which they live and work, and that (ii) empowers them to more effectively serve their institutions. The paper asserts that 'anti-racist' training for school leaders should be central to ongoing professional development efforts, especially in multi-cultural, multi-racial and multi-ethnic societies/educational environments. Fractures due to osteoporosis represent a serious burden on patients and healthcare systems. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of the anabolic agent abaloparatide (ABL) for the treatment of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis at high risk for fracture. A literature review was conducted using PubMed to identify articles focused on ABL published prior to February 10, 2020, using the search term "abaloparatide". ABL, a synthetic analog of human parathyroid hormone-related protein, increased bone mineral density (BMD), improved bone microarchitecture, and increased bone strength in preclinical and clinical studies. The pivotal phase 3 trial ACTIVE and its extension (ACTIVExtend) demonstrated the efficacy of initial treatment with ABL for 18 months followed by sequential treatment with alendronate (ALN) for an additional 24 months to reduce the risk of vertebral, nonvertebral, clinical, and major osteoporotic fractures and to increase BMD in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. Discontinuations from ACTIVE were slightly more common in ABL-treated patients due to dizziness, palpitations, nausea, and headache. Post hoc analyses of ACTIVE and ACTIVExtend support the efficacy and safety of ABL in relevant subpopulations including postmenopausal women with various baseline risk factors, women ≥80 years, women with type 2 diabetes mellitus, and women with renal impairment. ABL is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for women with postmenopausal osteoporosis at high risk for fracture. Its therapeutic effects are sustained with subsequent ALN therapy. This study explored differences between the two hemispheres in processing written words among deaf readers. The main hypothesis was that impoverished phonological abilities of deaf readers may lead to atypical patterns of hemispheric involvement. To test this, deaf participants completed a metalinguistic awareness test to evaluate their orthographic and phonological awareness. Additionally, they were asked to read biased or neutral target sentences ending with an ambiguous homograph, with each sentence followed by the request to make a rapid lexical decision on a target word presented either to the left (LH) or right hemisphere (RH). Targets were either related to the more frequent, dominant, meaning of the homograph, to the less frequent, subordinate, meaning of the homograph or were not related at all. An Inverse Efficiency Score based on both response latency and accuracy was calculated and revealed that deaf readers' RH perform better than their LH. In contrast to hearing readers who in previous studies manifested left hemisphere dominance when completed the same research design. The apparent divergence of deaf readers' hemisphere lateralization from that of hearing counterparts seems to validate previous findings suggesting greater reliance on RH involvement among deaf individuals during visual word recognition. The career progression of teachers of black, Asian and minority ethnic heritage is a matter of much debate and research. Over the past decade, a body of research has confirmed that race discrimination/race inequality is a factor in the progression of teachers of black, Asian and minority ethnic heritage in England. Although it has been argued that 'Britain is not a racist nation', it nonetheless has, as described by Phillips in 2016, a '...deep sensitivity to...ethnic and cultural difference'. According to Miller, this sensitivity remains at the heart of a 'deep-rooted and continuing struggle among black, Asian and minority ethnic teachers and academics for equality and mutual recognition'. Drawing on Miller's 2016 typology of educational institutions: engaged, experimenting, initiated and uninitiated, this paper presents evidence from three English headteachers of Multi-Academy Trusts who devise, implement and embed positive actions in the recruitment, development, retention and progression of staff of black, Asian and minority ethnic heritage. The objective of this study was to examine the work of school leaders/institutions in taking steps to improve black, Asian and minority ethnic teacher progression in England, by identifying and highlighting 'what works', and how. Furthermore, by treating each school/leader as a unique 'case', this paper shows their motivation (personal and professional), experiences of 'race', school contexts and the type/s of leadership required and used in these institutional contexts to change attitudes, cultures and behaviours. A growing body of scholarship draws connections between fiduciary law and the Constitution. In much of this literature, the Constitution is described as a fiduciary instrument that establishes fiduciary duties, not least for the President of the United States. This Article examines and critiques the claims of fiduciary constitutionalism. Although a range of arguments are made in this literature, there are common failings. Some of these involve a literalistic misreading of the works of leading political philosophers (e.g., Plato and Locke). Other failings involve fiduciary law, such as mistakes about how to identify fiduciary relationships and about the content and enforcement of fiduciary duties. Still other failings sound in constitutional law, including the attempt to locate the genre of the Constitution in the categories of private fiduciary law. This study investigated the affordances of a mobile video observation and tagging tool used to evaluate presentation skills in English language classrooms. The data consists of 35 video-recorded presentations in a higher education setting. Using a digital evaluation grid, the students received feedback based on visual analytics generated by the mobile app. The students then were asked to reflect on their performances, and were also asked to comment on the affordances and limitations of the method and the tool. Qualitative data that came from (1) students' written self-evaluations and reflections and (2) their reported perceptions of the affordances of the tool were analyzed using the Constant Comparison Method. Analyses of reflective writings indicated the dominance of negative self-evaluations of language use, while affective factors were also a strong theme. The video-tagging tool was found to be very beneficial by the learners, mainly in enabling them to notice their strengths and weaknesses in presenting in English and facilitating effective feedback. The processes responsible for methane (CH4) emissions from boreal wetlands are complex; hence, their model representation is complicated by a large number of parameters and parameter uncertainties. The arctic-enabled dynamic global vegetation model LPJ-GUESS (Lund–Potsdam–Jena General Ecosystem Simulator) is one such model that allows quantification and understanding of the natural wetland CH4 fluxes at various scales, ranging from local to regional and global, but with several uncertainties. The model contains detailed descriptions of the CH4 production, oxidation, and transport controlled by several process parameters. Complexities in the underlying environmental processes, warming-driven alternative paths of meteorological phenomena, and changes in hydrological and vegetation conditions highlight the need for a calibrated and optimised version of LPJ-GUESS. In this study, we formulated the parameter calibration as a Bayesian problem, using knowledge of reasonable parameters values as priors. We then used an adaptive Metropolis–Hastings (MH)-based Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to improve predictions of CH4 emission by LPJ-GUESS and to quantify uncertainties. Application of this method on uncertain parameters allows for a greater search of their posterior distribution, leading to a more complete characterisation of the posterior distribution with a reduced risk of the sample impoverishment that can occur when using other optimisation methods. For assimilation, the analysis used flux measurement data gathered during the period from 2005 to 2014 from the Siikaneva wetlands in Southern Finland with an estimation of measurement uncertainties. The data are used to constrain the processes behind the CH4 dynamics, and the posterior covariance structures are used to explain how the parameters and the processes are related. To further support the conclusions, the CH4 flux and the other component fluxes associated with the flux are examined. The results demonstrate the robustness of MCMC methods to quantitatively assess the interrelationship between objective function choices, parameter identifiability, and data support. The experiment using real observations from Siikaneva resulted in a reduction in the root-mean-square error (RMSE), from 0.044 to 0.023 gC m -2 d -1 , and a 93.89 % reduction in the cost function value. As a part of this work, knowledge about how CH4 data can constrain the parameters and processes is derived. Although the optimisation is performed based on a single site's flux data from Siikaneva, the algorithm is useful for larger-scale multi-site studies for a more robust calibration of LPJ-GUESS and similar models, and the results can highlight where model improvements are needed. In groundwater-limited settings, such as Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands, societal, ecological, and agricultural water needs depend on regular rainfall. Though long-range numerical weather predication models explicitly predict precipitation, such quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF) critically failed to detect the historic 2015 Caribbean drought. Consequently, this work examines the feasibility of developing a drought early warning tool using the Gálvez-Davison index (GDI), a tropical convective potential index, derived from the Climate Forecast System, version 2 (CFSv2). Drought forecasts are focused on Puerto Rico's early rainfall season (ERS; April-July), which is susceptible to intrusions of strongly stable Saharan air and represents the largest source of hydroclimatic variability for the island. A fully coupled atmosphere-ocean-land model, the CFSv2 can plausibly detect the transatlantic advection of low-GDI Saharan air with multimonth lead times. The mean ERS GDI is calculated from semidaily CFSv2 forecasts beginning 1 January of each year between 2012 and 2018 and monitored as the initialization approaches 1 April. The CFSv2 demonstrates a broad region of statistically significant correlations with observed GDI across the eastern Caribbean up to 30 days prior to the ERS. During 2015, the CFSv2 forecast a low-GDI tongue extending across the Atlantic toward the Caribbean with 60-90 days lead time and placed Puerto Rico's 2015 ERS beneath the 15th percentile of all 1982-2018 ERS forecasts with up to 30 days lead time. The retardance of silica glass fibers was evaluated using photoelastic techniques. Here, surface birefringence in glass fibers is shown to be a consequence of surface stress relaxation for as‐received fibers drawn from Suprasil II. The surface features of the birefringent fibers were compared to a model of the residual axial stress profile resulting from a diffusion‐controlled surface stress relaxation. Additionally, a uniform birefringence in the fiber equivalent to a constant tensile stress was recognized and attributed to structural anisotropy produced during fiber drawing. The contribution of structural anisotropy to the observed birefringence remained constant as the surface features were successively etched away. Surface compressive stress generation was also observed, as retardance corresponding to a surface compressive stress was found to increase with applied tensile stress during short heat treatments. Significant features of the retardance profile in as‐received silica glass fibers, with a thin surface compressive stress layer and compensating interior tensile stress, agreed with the residual stress profiles predicted by the surface stress relaxation model after correcting for this observed structural anisotropy. The 2017 and 2018 Atlantic hurricane seasons poignantly illustrated the dangers tropical cyclones pose to US, Central American, and Caribbean coastlines. In particular, Hurricane Maria inflicted widespread damage, including catastrophic defoliation, to Puerto Rico, altering surface heat fluxes and possibly modifying precipitation patterns. This study assesses whether defoliation-driven changes to surface energy fluxes redistribute precipitation in the months following a powerful hurricane landfall. Remote sensing analyses of Maria-related vegetation reduction and recovery from Puerto Rico were adapted to the Georgia coastline. In this novel methodology, the resulting landscape evolution, characterized by an instantaneous vegetation reduction with a gradual recovery, was assimilated into the Weather Research and Forecasting model at a convection-allowing a 3-km grid spacing for the 1 June–1 August 2017 period. The experiment revealed that Maria-scale defoliation reduced precipitation by 14% during the month following landfall within a 50 × 50 km zone containing the hypothetical landfall location. A maximum deficit of 20.0% was reached 4 weeks after landfall. For June 2017, the modeled 14% deficit would have shifted the precipitation total from the 61st to the 47th percentile for years 1981–2016. Meanwhile, precipitation totals were unchanged on the domain scale. The near-landfall drying was also evident in three less-severe defoliation simulations, suggesting that systematic precipitation redistribution near the landfall location is possible following storms considerably weaker than Hurricane Maria. Analyses of the temperature and wind fields suggest that coastal kinematic flow is altered by the introduction of a thermally driven pressure gradient in the defoliated zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates differences in the word processing skills of students with and without reading difficulties who read Turkish, an entirely transparent orthography. Thirty-five students diagnosed as poor readers and 51 typically developing controls were tested across two experiments, one that assessed their ability to process identicalness of isolated real words as opposed to pseudowords and another that assessed their ability to judge semantic relatedness of two real words. Participants were from two education levels; half of them were 3rd-4th graders and half were 6th–7th graders. An integrative view of the findings points to an apparent failure of Turkish poor readers to develop a lexicalized reading route that mediates word recognition by means of permanent orthographic knowledge. Moreover, their ability to effectively process word letter sequences along a non-lexical grapheme-to-phoneme conversion-based reading route was found to be seriously restricted. The career progression of teachers and academics of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) heritage in England has been a matter of intense scrutiny among a range of actors including the public, politicians and researchers. Many reasons and explanations have been provided for the apparent lack of improvement in this area, despite an increase in the numbers of students of BAME heritage in schools and other educational institutions, despite the passage of the Equality Act 2010, despite student led campaigns such as 'Why is my professor not black?', and despite the substantial body of evidence on the benefits for students of BAME heritage of having same race teachers and lecturers. At the individual level, barriers have included interpersonal racism, and at the organisational level, institutional racism has been identified as contributing to, if not responsible for the lower than average progression of staff of BAME heritage in England's educational institutions. Nevertheless, over the last decade, an emergent and sustained body of research has emerged that examines 'how' and under 'what conditions' promotion/progression occurs or can be achieved. In arriving at a conceptual model of progression among teachers of BAME heritage, critical evaluation of the four available studies reveals four key factors or enablers: meritocratic agency; contrived agency; endorsement and institutional habitus.
