A primary method for the production of 2D nanosheets is liquid-phase delamination from their 3D layered bulk analogues. Most strategies currently achieve this objective by significant mechanical energy input or chemical modification but these processes are detrimental to the structure and properties of the resulting 2D nanomaterials. Bulk poly(triazine imide) (PTI)-based carbon nitrides are layered materials with a high degree of crystalline order. Here, we demonstrate that these semiconductors are spontaneously soluble in select polar aprotic solvents, that is, without any chemical or physical intervention. In contrast to more aggressive exfoliation strategies, this thermodynamically driven dissolution process perfectly maintains the crystallographic form of the starting material, yielding solutions of defect-free, hexagonal 2D nanosheets with a well-defined size distribution. This pristine nanosheet structure results in narrow, excitation-wavelength-independent photoluminescence emission spectra. Furthermore, by controlling the aggregation state of the nanosheets, we demonstrate that the emission wavelengths can be tuned from narrow UV to broad-band white. Electrochemical power sources, such as polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), require the use of precious metal catalysts which are deposited as nanoparticles onto supports in order to minimize their mass loading and therefore cost. State-of-the-art/commercial supports are based on forms of carbon black. However, carbon supports present disadvantages including corrosion in the operating fuel cell environment and loss of catalyst activity. Here we review recent work examining the potential of different varieties of graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) as catalyst supports, highlighting their likely benefits, as well as the challenges associated with their implementation. The performance of gCN and hybrid gCN-carbon materials as PEMFC electrodes is discussed, as well as their potential for use in alkaline systems and water electrolyzers. Graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) is shown to undergo lithium insertion reactions applicable with lithium-ion battery anodes. Lithium capacity was found to be substantially lower than theoretically expected, so the properties of gCN composited with conducting graphite (CG), which was added to improve the performance, were investigated. The electrodes exhibited a systematic increase in lithium uptake with CG content, but the capacity never exceeded that of graphite. It is shown that electron transport via conducting pathways was limiting. Li+ uptake for 10 % gCN was similar to a graphite electrode, indicating that gCN does play a role in determining the storage capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electrodeposition of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) on two-dimensional single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network electrodes is investigated as a means of tailoring electrode surfaces with a well-defined amount of electrocatalytic material. Both Pt NP deposition and electrocatalytic studies are undertaken using the microcapillary electrochemical method (MCEM), enabling multiple microscale measurements to be performed quickly and easily on the same SWNT sample. Using this approach, Pt catalysts with high specific surface areas relative to the geometric electrode area (defined by the meniscus contact of the MCEM probe with the Si/SiO 2 substrate bearing the SWNT network) can be controlled precisely over three orders of magnitude. This enables the influence of the specific surface area of an electrocatalyst on activity to be investigated, as demonstrated by studies of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). The meniscus-based microcapillary electrochemical method (MCEM) allows electrochemical measurements to be made quickly and easily at a wide range of materials, simply by connecting up the sample of interest as a working electrode and bringing a capillary containing an electrolyte solution and quasi-reference/counter electrode into meniscus contact. In this work, microcapillary-based electrochemical methodology is advanced by introducing a very high aspect ratio carbon fibre ultramicroelectrode (CF-UME) allowing generation/collection and shielding (redox competition) measurements to be made. The experimental concept is demonstrated with the outer sphere (ferrocenylmethyl) trimethylammonium ion (FcTMA +/2+ ) redox mediator on a single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network. It is then used to investigate electrochemical reactions on a complex electrode, i.e. a SWNT forest, which is not easily investigated using traditional techniques that would require the electrode material to be physically encapsulated. The technique is most powerful when used to probe the different mechanistic pathways of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This aspect is illustrated through studies on platinum, glassy carbon and SWNT forest electrodes. By platinising the CF-UME, the electrode can be used as a local sensor for the intermediate H 2 O 2 and the O 2 reactant, and it is possible to track the evolving consumption of these species near the working electrode during voltammetric measurements. Single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network electrodes, in which a planar arrangement of SWNTs on an inert surface serve as a working electrode for voltammetry, offer considerable attributes for electroanalysis. Here, the effect of SWNT network density on the trace voltammetric analysis of a water-soluble ferrocene derivative (FcCOOH) is investigated in the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG) or albumin, species that can foul (block) an electrode via adsorption. Fc-based analytes typically find use in redox labelling or redox shuttling, point-of-care electrochemical detection devices. Comparison is made between SWNT electrodes, grown by catalyzed chemical vapour deposition at three different surface coverages, 5, ~20 and ~30 μm SWNT μm-2, and commercial screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs). In the presence of PEG (8% 2 K), for cyclic voltammetry, the lowest detectable concentration decreases as SWNT network density decreases. However, when employing differential pulse voltammetry, all three networks show a 1 nM FcCOOH limit of detection, three orders of magnitude smaller than achievable with SPCEs. This is attributed to the low capacitance of the SWNTs and absence of amorphous carbon structures which can contribute a pseudo-capacitive response. For both polyethylene glycol (PEG) and albumin (4%), repeat cycling shows the higher density SWNT network electrodes (≥20 μm SWNT μm-2) are far less susceptible to electrode fouling. Toward practical devices, a three-electrode chip, similar in design to that used in SPCEs, but using high density SWNT network electrodes, is also demonstrated to have impressive detection sensitivity for FcCOOH (nM level) in PEG solutions. We report a single-step route to co-deposit Cu nanoparticles with a graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) support using nanosecond Ce:Nd:YAG pulsed laser ablation from a Cu metal target coated using acetonitrile (CH3CN). The resulting Cu/gCN hybrids showed strong optical absorption in the visible to near-IR range and exhibited surface-enhanced Raman or resonance Raman scattering (SERS or SERRS) enhancement for crystal violet (CV), methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine 6G (R6G) used as probe analyte molecules adsorbed on the surface. We have characterized the Cu nanoparticles and the nature of the gCN support materials using a range of spectroscopic, structural, and compositional analysis techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crystalline two-dimensional carbon nitrides with polytriazine imide (PTI) structure are shown to act amphoterically, buffering both HCl and NaOH aqueous solutions, resulting in charged PTI layers that dissolve spontaneously in their aqueous media, particularly for the alkaline solutions. This provides a low energy, green route to their scalable solution processing. Protonation in acid is shown to occur at pyridinic nitrogens, stabilized by adjacent triazines, whereas deprotonation in base occurs primarily at basal plane NH bridges, although NH2 edge deprotonation is competitive. We conclude that mildly acidic or basic pHs are necessary to provide sufficient net charge on the nanosheets to promote dissolution, while avoiding high ion concentrations which screen the repulsion of like-charged PTI sheets in solution. The crystalline graphitic carbon nitride, poly-triazine imide (PTI) is highly unusual among layered materials since it is spontaneously soluble in aprotic, polar solvents including dimethylformamide (DMF). The PTI material consists of layers of carbon nitride intercalated with LiBr. When dissolved, the resulting solutions consist of dissolved, luminescent single to multilayer nanosheets of around 60–125 nm in diameter and Li+ and Br− ions originating from the intercalating salt. To understand this unique solubility, the structure of these solutions has been investigated by high-energy X-ray and neutron diffraction. Although the diffraction patterns are dominated by inter-solvent correlations there are clear differences between the X-ray diffraction data of the PTI solution and the solvent in the 4–6 Å−1 range, with real space differences persisting to at least 10 Å. Structural modelling using both neutron and X-ray datasets as a constraint reveal the formation of distinct, dense solvation shells surrounding the nanoparticles with a layer of Br−close to the PTI-solvent interface. This solvent ordering provides a configuration that is energetically favourable underpinning thermodynamically driven PTI dissolution. Although proton exchange membranes (PEMs) are widely deployed in an array of commercial applications, limitations linked to their proton conductivity, water retention, and gas permeability still limit ultimate device performance. While ex situ studies have shown additives can enhance membrane stability and mass transport, to date few have demonstrated that these performance enhancements are maintained when tested in commercially relevant electrochemical technologies, such as fuel cells or electrolyzers. Herein, a new multifunctional additive, 2D poly(triazine imide) (PTI), is demonstrated for composite PEMs, which is shown to boost proton conductivity by 37% under optimal high relative humidity (RH) conditions and 67% at low RHs. PTI also enables major improvements (over 55%) in both current and power densities in industrially relevant PEM fuel cells (PEMFCs). Most importantly, in situ and ex situ characterization suggests that the enhanced performance is due to polymer aggregate‐PTI clusters that form with increasing 2D character and improved long‐range connectivity, while acid‐base interactions with pyridinic nitrogen facilitate the critical proton hopping mechanism at all RHs. Developing high-performing and scalable electrode materials for supercapacitors and batteries has been of tremendous interest for the world's forthcoming clean and renewable energy transition. As a versatile material, Two-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) has been utilized in electrochemical energy storage (EES) applications due to its nitrogen-rich adsorption sites, cost-effective production, and tunable electronic structure. The electrochemical performance of pristine g-CN has been boosted by forming hybrid architectures with highly conductive carbon-based materials, such as graphene, reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, and beyond (e.g., MXene). Using such heterogeneous compositions for EES applications has significantly increased in recent years. This study reviews the g-CN/carbon nanomaterial (CNM) hybrids, considering the dimensionality in nanomaterials, and underscores the influence of the material's dimensionality and the synthesis/fabrication routes. The effect of structural and physicochemical changes on the electrode's electrochemical performance after hybridization is presented comparatively. Besides, the comprehensive review outlines challenges and future improvements in g-CN/CNM hybrid materials for outstanding developments in energy storage systems. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is a promising solid electrolyte material for solid‐state lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, but low intrinsic ionic conductivity, poor mechanical properties, and failure to hinder the polysulfide shuttle effect limits its application. Herein, a polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) is synthesized and applied as an organic framework to comprehensively enhance the performance of PEO by forming a composite electrolyte (PEO‐PIM). The unique structure of PIM‐1 not only enhances the mechanical strength and hardness over the PEO electrolyte by an order of magnitude, increasing stability toward the metallic lithium anode but also increases its ionic conductivity by lowering the degree of crystallinity. Furthermore, the PIM‐1 is shown to effectively trap lithium polysulfide species to mitigate against the detrimental polysulfide shuttle effect, as electrophilic 1,4‐dicyanooxanthrene functional groups possess higher binding energy to polysulfides. Benefiting from these properties, the use of PEO‐PIM composite electrolyte has achieved greatly improved rate performance, long‐cycling stability, and excellent safety features for solid‐state Li‐S batteries. Atomically dispersed transition metal‐nitrogen‐carbon catalysts are emerging as low‐cost electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cells. However, a cost‐effective and scalable synthesis strategy for these catalysts is still required, as well as a greater understanding of their mechanisms. Herein, iron, nitrogen co‐doped carbon spheres (Fe@NCS) have been prepared via hydrothermal carbonization and high‐temperature post carbonization. It is determined that FeN4 is the main form of iron existing in the obtained Fe@NCS. Two different precursors containing Fe2+ and Fe3+ are compared. Both chemical and structural differences have been observed in catalysts starting from Fe2+ and Fe3+ precursors. Fe2+@NCS‐A (starting with Fe2+ precursor) shows better catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction. This catalyst is studied in an anion exchange membrane fuel cell. The electro-oxidation of dopamine (DA) is investigated on the unmodified surfaces of five different classes of carbon electrodes: glassy carbon (GC), oxygen-terminated polycrystalline boron-doped diamond (pBDD), edge plane pyrolytic graphite (EPPG), basal plane pyrolytic graphite (BPPG), and the basal surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), encompassing five distinct grades with step edge density and coverage varying by more than 2 orders of magnitude. Surfaces were prepared carefully and characterized by a range of techniques, including atomic force microscopy (AFM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and Rarnan spectroscopy. Although pBDD was found to be the least susceptible to surface fouling (even at relatively high DA concentrations), the reaction showed sluggish kinetics on this electrode. In contrast, DA electro-oxidation at pristine basal plane HOPG at concentrations ⩽100μM in 0.15 M PBS, pH 7.2, showed fast kinetics and only minor susceptibility toward surface fouling from DA byproducts, although the extent of HOPG surface contamination by oxidation products increased substantially at higher concentrations (with the response similar on all grades, irrespective of step edge coverage). EPPG also showed a fast response, with little indication of passivation with repeated voltammetric cycling but a relatively high background signal due to the high capacitance of this graphite surface termination. Of all five carbon electrode types, freshly cleaved basal plane HOPG showed the clearest signal (distinct from the background) at low concentrations of DA (<10μM) as a consequence of the low capacitance. Studies of the electrochemical oxidation of DA in the presence of the common interferents ascorbic add (AA) and serotonin (5-HT), of relevance to neurochemical analysis, showed that the signals for DA were still clearly and easily resolved at basal plane HOPG surfaces. In the presence of AA, repetitive voltammetry caused products of AA electro-oxidation to adsorb onto the HOPG surface, forming a permselective film that allowed the electrochemical oxidation of DA to proceed unimpeded, while greatly inhibiting the electrochemical response of AA itself. The studies presented provide conclusive evidence that the pristine surface of basal plane HOPG is highly active for the detection of DA, irrespective of the step edge density and method of cleavage, and adds to a growing body of evidence that the basal plane of HOPG is a much more active electrode for many classes of electrode reactions than previously believed. Although lithium, and other alkali ion, batteries are widely utilized and studied, many of the chemical and mechanical processes that underpin the materials within, and drive their degradation/failure, are not fully understood. Hence, to enhance the understanding of these processes various ex situ, in situ and operando characterization methods are being explored. Recently, electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC‐AFM), and related techniques, have emerged as crucial platforms for the versatile characterization of battery material surfaces. They have revealed insights into the morphological, mechanical, chemical, and physical properties of battery materials when they evolve under electrochemical control. This critical review will appraise the progress made in the understanding batteries using EC‐AFM, covering both traditional and new electrode–electrolyte material junctions. This progress will be juxtaposed against the ability, or inability, of the system adopted to embody a truly representative battery environment. By contrasting key EC‐AFM literature with conclusions drawn from alternative characterization tools, the unique power of EC‐AFM to elucidate processes at battery interfaces is highlighted. Simultaneously opportunities for complementing EC‐AFM data with a range of spectroscopic, microscopic, and diffraction techniques to overcome its limitations are described, thus facilitating improved battery performance. Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) are a promising replacement for the fossil fuel–dependent automotive and energy sectors. They have become increasingly commercialized in the last decade; however, significant limitations on durability and performance limit their commercial uptake. Catalyst layer (CL) design is commonly reported to impact device power density and durability; although, a consensus is rarely reached due to differences in testing conditions, experimental design, and types of data reported. This is further exacerbated by aspects of CL design such as catalyst support, proton conduction, catalyst, fabrication, and morphology, being significantly interdependent; hence, a wider appreciation is required in order to optimize performance, improve durability, and reduce costs. Here, the cutting‐edge research within the field of PEFCs is reviewed, investigating the effect of different manufacturing techniques, electrolyte distribution, support materials, surface chemistries, and total porosity on power density and durability. These are critically appraised from an applied perspective to inform the most relevant and promising pathways to make and test commercially viable cells. This holistic view of the competing aspects of CL design and preparation will facilitate the development of optimized CLs, especially the incorporation of novel catalyst support materials. We demonstrate a novel and versatile pipet-based approach to study the landing of individual nanoparticles (NPs) on various electrode materials without any need for encapsulation or fabrication of complex substrate electrode structures, providing great flexibility with respect to electrode materials. Because of the small electrode area defined by the pipet dimensions, the background current is low, allowing for the detection of minute current signals with good time resolution. This approach was used to characterize the potential-dependent activity of Au NPs and to measure the catalytic activity of a single NP on a TEM grid, combining electrochemical and physical characterization at the single NP level for the first time. There is currently an enormous drive to move away from the use of Pt group metals in catalysis, particularly for fuel cells, because of their increasing rarity and cost. Simultaneously, there have been advances in the application of graphene supported nanoparticular catalysts. However, these Pt-free, graphene supported catalysts can be complex to produce, show poor catalytic activity and degrade quickly due to particle agglomeration or isolation. Herein, we report a one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles (NPs) tethered to a reduced graphene oxide (rGO) template via organic linkages. This is one of the few silver precursor formations that have been combined with graphene oxide (GO) to simultaneously establish linkage binding sites, reduce GO and yield tethered nanoparticles. These materials are shown to efficiently catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline environments, with aminoethanol linkages to 21.55 ± 2.88 nm Ag particles exhibiting the highest catalytic activity via the four-electron pathway. This method, therefore, offers a straightforward route to produce effective catalysts from inexpensive precursors, which could be developed further for significant industrial application. The combustion of mercury(II) thiocyanate to form 'Pharaoh's serpents' is a spectacular reaction first described nearly two centuries ago. The large volume of distinctive yellow branches that grow from a tiny quantity of flaming reactants makes this an enchanting demonstration, often used to depict the magic of chemistry. In recent years several videos of this bizarre process have 'gone viral' online. Formally, the reaction should yield a carbon nitride with the ideal formula C3N4 along with HgS. However, since early characterization attempts there has been little further study of the materials produced. Herein we apply modern characterization techniques to reinvestigate the nature of the carbon nitride and its intimate relationship to the HgS produced. The HgS phase forms nanoparticles that decorate the surfaces of a C3N4 foam matrix. Both of these compounds are important wide-gap semiconductors and we propose that the 'Pharaoh's serpents reaction' could be used to produce a potentially important heterojunction nanocomposite materials that could be useful optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications. Carbon nitride materials with graphitic to polymeric structures (gCNH) were investigated as catalyst supports for the proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers using IrO2 nanoparticles as oxygen evolution electrocatalyst. Here, the performance of IrO2 nanoparticles formed and deposited in situ onto carbon nitride support for PEM water electrolysis was explored based on previous preliminary studies conducted in related systems. The results revealed that this preparation route catalyzed the decomposition of the carbon nitride to form a material with much lower N content. This resulted in a significant enhancement of the performance of the gCNH-IrO2 (or N-doped C-IrO2) electrocatalyst that was likely attributed to higher electrical conductivity of the N-doped carbon support. Boron doped diamond (BDD) disk ultramicroelectrodes have been used to sense single nanoparticle (NP) electrocatalytic collision events. BDD serves as an excellent support electrode due to its electrocatalytic inactivity and low background currents and thus can be used to detect the electroactivity of a wide range of colliding NPs, with high sensitivity.
