Abstract Tetrastigma hemsleyanum, a traditional Chinese medicinal plant with anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-tumor properties, faces increasing abiotic stress due to climate change, agricultural chemicals, and industrialization. This study investigated how three abiotic stress factors influence antioxidant enzyme activity, MDA levels, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity, chlorophyll, carotenoids, active compounds, and gene expression in different T. hemsleyanum strains. The comprehensive evaluation indicates that the ZJWZ strain holds potential as a preferred parental material for future resistance breeding. Furthermore, PAL gene expression was strongly positively correlated with flavonoid and phenol contents, highlighting its role in the stress response through the phenylpropanoid-flavonoid pathway. This study contributes to the standardization of the production and breeding of superior strains of T. hemsleyanum. It also lays the foundation for investigating how plants react to environmental stressors.

Abstract Background The Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis asiaeorientalis) is critically endangered and has suffered from extensive habitat loss and fragmentation. Knowledge of its habitat preference could assist the conservation of the species and associated ecosystem. In the present study, spatiotemporal variations and driving factors of habitat use of a Yangtze finless porpoise population were studied in a 30-km section of the Yangtze mainstream. Seasonal variation in porpoise occurrences was observed based on visual surveys conducted from 2022 to 2023, with five surveys during the dry season and seven surveys during the wet season. Biological and environmental factors were synchronously sampled in both seasons. The maximum entropy model (MaxEnt) was applied to get the effects of biological and environmental variables on porpoise habitat preference. Results Within the study area, high-suitability habitats of the finless porpoises accounted for 19.0% and 15.4% of the area during the dry and wet seasons, respectively. The high-suitability habitat shifted from the mainstream in the dry season to the sandbar head and tributary area in the wet season. In the dry season, variables influencing the distribution were phytoplankton biomass, water velocity, and zooplankton biomass, which contributed 97.05% variation in the MaxEnt modeling. In the wet season, water depth, surface water temperature, and zooplankton biomass accounted for 97.69% variation of the distribution. Above results highlight that food availability plays an important role in porpoises distribution regardless of seasons, particularly in the dry season. This is because plankton is the primary food source for filter-feeding and omnivorous fish, especially those in the upper-middle layer which are frequently preyed on by finless porpoises. Conclusion Suitable areas for finless porpoises, particularly those with high suitability, differed significantly across seasons at a fine-scale in the Yangtze mainstream. Seasonal variations in habitat were driven by different factors. But food availability plays an important role in porpoises distribution regardless of seasons, particularly in the dry season. These results suggest prioritizing conservation of the finless porpoise in the dry season when fish resources are relatively scarce. Measures including monitoring and evaluating prey resources should be considered. More attention should also be paid on management of shipping in the dry season given that the high-suitability habitat of the finless porpoises shifts to the mainstream.

Abstract Background Acute-phase reactions (APRs) are common among people treated for the first time with zoledronate (ZOL). The current view is that both the APRs caused by ZOL and its efficacy are related to the mevalonic acid pathway. However, the relationship between APRs and ZOL efficacy remains unclear. Methods This was a prospective observational cohort study involving postmenopausal women with osteoporosis in Shanghai, China, for 1 year. A total of 108 patients with an average age of 67.4 ± 5.8 years were treated with 5 mg intravenous ZOL for the first time. Data on demographic characteristics, APRs, blood counts, bone turnover markers, including C-telopeptide collagen crosslinks (CTX) and N-terminal propeptide of type 1 collagen (PINP), and bone mineral density (BMD) were collected. Results (1) The results did not reveal a relationship between APRs and changes in bone turnover markers and BMD but showed that changes in body temperature (T) within 3 days after administration were positively correlated with changes in the BMD of the LS at Month 12 (β = 0.279 P = 0.034). (2) This effect was mediated mainly by changes in serum CTX (b = 0.046, 95% CI [0.0010–0.0091]). (3) The ROC curve revealed that when T increased by 1.95 °C, the sensitivity and specificity of identifying clinically important changes in LS BMD after 1 year were optimized. Conclusions In this study, we tested the hypothesis that people with elevated body T after initial ZOL treatment had greater improvements in BMD and better outcomes. Unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) in lipids are the key to nutraceutical oil applications, with various potential applications in nutraceutical functional foods and pharmaceutical industries. In Idesia polycarpa (Salicaceae), more than 80 % of UFA have been found in the fruits; yet, the underlying genetic mechanism remains poorly understood. Due to the lack of theoretical research on the genes related to lipid biosynthesis and the complete genetic transformation system of I. polycarpa fruit, the selection and breeding of I. polycarpa, an excellent oil tree, has been severely restricted. In-depth understanding of the molecular mechanism and gene function of lipid biosynthesis of I. polycarpa fruit is therefore of great significance for the development of I. polycarpa resources. This is not only conducive to the genetic improvement of I. polycarpa by molecular breeding technologies but can also provide a reference for the study of the gene functions of other oil plants. In this study, the FA accumulation patterns of I. polycarpa fruits during 8 growth periods were analysed. Fruit from two developmental periods with different UFA levels were analysed for RNA sequencing by an Illumina NovaSeq 6000 HiSeq platform. De novo transcriptome assembly presented 115,350 unigenes and 4382 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Functional annotation in the KEGG pathway and combined with DEG data revealed candidate genes potentially involved in UFA biosynthesis. Expression analysis of q-PCR of IpDGAT2, IpGPAT, IpKASII, IpSAD, IpFAD2, IpFAD3 and IpFAD8 suggested that these genes are highly involved in UFA biosynthesis. Full-length candidate genes were cloned and analysed by bioinformatic tools, and function analysis of IpSAD and IpFAD3 showed that these genes regulated the products of linoleic acid metabolism. This study provides a foundation for UFA biosynthesis in Idesia polycarpa, facilitating its genetic breeding in the future.

Abstract We investigated the effect of eldecalcitol on disuse muscle atrophy. C57BL/6J male mice aged 6 weeks were randomly assigned to control, tail suspension (TS), and TS-eldecalcitol–treated groups and were injected intraperitoneally twice a week with either vehicle (control and TS) or eldecalcitol at 3.5 or 5 ng for 3 weeks. Grip strength and muscle weights of the gastrocnemius (GAS), tibialis anterior (TA), and soleus (SOL) were determined. Oxidative stress was evaluated by malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase. Bone microarchitecture was analyzed using microcomputed tomography. The effect of eldecalcitol on C2C12 myoblasts was analyzed by measuring myofibrillar protein MHC and the atrophy markers Atrogin-1 and MuRF-1 using immunofluorescence. The influence of eldecalcitol on NF-κB signaling pathway and vitamin D receptor (VDR) was assessed through immunofluorescence, (co)-immunoprecipitation, and VDR knockdown studies. Eldecalcitol increased grip strength (P < 0.01) and restored muscle loss in GAS, TA, and SOL (P < 0.05 to P < 0.001) induced by TS. An improvement was noted in bone mineral density and bone architecture in the eldecalcitol group. The impaired oxidative defense system was restored by eldecalcitol (P < 0.05 to P < 0.01 vs. TS). Eldecalcitol (10 nM) significantly inhibited the expression of MuRF-1 (P < 0.001) and Atrogin-1 (P < 0.01), increased the diameter of myotubes (P < 0.05), inhibited the expression of P65 and P52 components of NF-κB and P65 nuclear location, thereby inhibiting NF-κB signaling. Eldecalcitol promoted VDR binding to P65 and P52. VDR signaling is required for eldecalcitol-mediated anti-atrophy effects. In conclusion, eldecalcitol exerted its beneficial effects on disuse-induced muscle atrophy via NF-κB inhibition.

Abstract Background Double teeth are usually the result of an abnormality in the developing tooth germ. Double teeth can occur in either the primary or permanent dentition, with the majority of cases concerning permanent teeth reported in the anterior teeth and less frequently in the molar teeth. Case presentation This report illustrates five cases of double teeth in molars with pulp and periapical disease, including one case of geminated teeth and four cases of fused teeth. Radiographic findings revealed the presence of extra teeth on the buccal aspect of the molar in five cases, with or without communication between the two root canal systems. Root canal treatment was performed by using CBCT and a dental operating microscope. The treatment outcome was good in all five cases. Conclusion The diagnosis and treatment of double teeth requires special attention. The root canal system should be carefully explored to obtain a full understanding of the anatomy, allowing it to be fully cleaned and obturated. Proper anatomical structure analysis prior to treatment facilitates the development of an appropriate treatment plan, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful treatment both aesthetically and functionally.

Abstract Background Recent studies indicate that endometrial hypoxia plays a critical role in adenomyosis (AM) development. Mitochondria are extremely sensitive to hypoxic damage, which can result in both morphological and functional impairment. Mitophagy is a crucial mechanism for preserving mitochondrial quality by selectively removing damaged mitochondria, thus ensuring the proper functioning of the entire mitochondrial network. In response to hypoxia, PINK1 is activated as a regulator of mitophagy, but its role in AM requires further study. Objective To explore the potential mechanism of mitophagy mediated by PINK1 in the pathogenesis of AM. Method The study compared PINK1, Parkin, OPTIN, P62, and NDP52 protein expression levels in patients with or without AM using clinical specimens and an AM mouse model. Pathological changes were compared using HE staining. Immunofluorescence and western blot were used to detect protein expression levels. Endometrial stromal cells (ESC) were isolated and examined for mitophagy, protein expression level, and cell invasion ability. Results Both the endometrial tissue from patients with AM and AM ESC displayed an upregulation of protein levels for PINK1, Parkin, OPTIN, P62, and NDP52 when compared with the control group. Then, HE staining confirmed the successful establishment of the AM mouse model. Moreover, the ultrastructural analysis using transmission electron microscopy revealed that AM mice’s endometrial glandular epithelial and stromal cells had exhibited swollen, deformed, and reduced mitochondria along with an increase in the number of lysosomes and mitochondrial autophagosomes. The protein levels of PINK1, Parkin, OPTIN, P62, and NDP52 in uterine tissue from AM mice were noticeably increased, accompanied by a considerable upregulation of ROS levels compared to the control group. In addition, cells in the AM group showed remarkably elevated mitophagy and invasion potentials compared to the control group. In contrast, the cell invasion ability decreased following PINK1 knockdown using the RNA interference technique. Conclusion The high levels of PINK1-mediated mitophagy have been found in AM. The upregulation in mitophagy contributes to mitochondrial damage, which may result in the abnormal invasion characteristic of AM.

Gardenia jasminoides Ellis is a widely cultivated garden plant, but its flower resources are underutilized. In this study, three pectic polysaccharides extracted from Gardenia flowers (GFPPs) were obtained, including acid-extracted pectin (ACP), hot water-extracted pectin (HWP), and alkaline-extracted pectin (ALP). The physicochemical, structural, rheological, and functional properties of GFPPs were compared and analyzed. The results showed that the yield of all GFPPs exceeded 21%, and the proportion of the rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I) regions ranged from 42.20% to 54.66%. The GFPPs were identified as low-methoxyl pectin with a semi-crystalline and amorphous structure. Among them, ACP had the highest molecular weight and neutral sugar content, while ALP had the highest content of galacturonic acid and protein. Rheologically, all three GFPPs exhibited pseudoplastic behavior with thixotropic properties, particularly ACP. Storage at low temperatures increased the apparent viscosity of ACP and HWP, while that of ALP was decreased. Importantly, emulsions prepared with 2% GFPPs and 10% medium-chain triglycerides remained stable at 4 °C and 25 °C for 21 days. Moreover, the ALP-based emulsion demonstrated excellent emulsifying capability, maintaining stability at 60 °C for 21 days with an emulsion appearance. These findings suggest that GFPPs hold promise as a pectin source for hydrocolloids and can be used in various food applications.

The large-scale production of edible mushrooms typically requires the use of greenhouses, as the greenhouse environment significantly affects the growth of edible mushrooms. It is crucial to effectively predict the temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide fluctuations within the mushroom greenhouse for determining the environmental stress and pre-regulation of edible mushrooms. To address the nonlinearity, temporal dynamics, and strong coupling of the edible mushroom greenhouse environment, a temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide prediction model based on the combination of the attention mechanism, the convolutional neural network, and the long short-term memory neural network (A-CNN-LSTM) is proposed. Experimental data were collected from both the inside and outside of the greenhouse, including environmental data and the on–off data of environmental control devices. After completing missing data using linear interpolation, denoising with Kalman filtering, and normalization, the recurrent neural network (RNN) model, long short-term memory (LSTM) model, and A-CNN-LSTM model were trained and tested on the time series data. These models were used to predict the environmental changes in temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide inside the greenhouse. The results indicate that the A-CNN-LSTM model outperforms the other two models in terms of denoising, non-denoising, and different prediction time steps. The proposed method accurately predicts temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels with errors of 0.17 °C (R2 = 0.974), 2.06% (R2 = 0.804), and 8.367 ppm (R2 = 0.993), respectively. These results indicate improved prediction accuracy for temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide values inside the edible mushroom greenhouse. The findings provide a decision basis for the precise control of the greenhouse environment.

Introduction: Dahuang-Taoren (DT) is a classic combination of botanical drugs applied to treat pain-related diseases in ancient China. Today, DT is frequently applied for dysmenorrhea of adenomyosis (AM) in the clinic. Growing evidence indicates Rho GTPases may play an essential role in AM progression. However, the potential mechanism of DT on Rho GTPases in AM remains unclear.Methods: The expressions of Rho GTPases in the patients with AM were evaluated. Further, pituitary transplantation-induced AM mice and the primary AM endometrial stromal cells (AMESCs) were subjected to DT intervention.Results: The results revealed that the expressions of Rho GTPases were significantly upregulated in both AM patients and AM mice. The DT could reduce pathological infiltration, relieve hyperalgesia, and alleviate cytoskeleton remodeling in AM mice. Besides, the migration and invasion of AMESCs were markedly inhibited after exposure to DT.Discussion: These effects may be linked to the decreased Rho GTPases expression. The results may offer a novel explanation of DT against AM.

BackgroundThe need to search for ganglia in the terminal rectum/fistula of complex anorectal malformations (ARMs) remains controversial. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between ganglia absence in the terminal rectum/fistula and defecation function after anoplasty.MethodsA retrospective review of patients who received anoplasty for treating male imperforate anus with rectobulbar (RB)/rectoprostatic (RP) fistulas at a tertiary pediatric hospital was conducted with registered demographic data, imaging study results, and information on the terminal rectum/fistula specimen (excision extension and pathological findings). According to the pathological findings, patients were divided into Groups 1 (ganglia absence) and 2 (ganglia presence). Furthermore, the postoperative defecation function was evaluated using various rating scale questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0.ResultsOf the 62 patients, 18 (29.0%) showed ganglia absence in the terminal rectum/fistula. By analyzing the imaging data, spinal anomalies and spinal cord anomalies were found in 30.6% (19/62) and 56.5% (35/62) of patients, respectively. Baseline information was comparable between Groups 1 and 2 (P > 0.05). For defecation function, there were no significant differences in Kelly scores between the two groups (4.0 ± 0.8 vs. 4.4 ± 1.1, P = 0.177), while Krickenbeck (3.7 ± 1.8 vs. 5.2 ± 1.4) and Rintala (13.7 ± 3.6 vs. 16.0 ± 2.7) scores in Group 1 were significantly lower than those in Group 2 (both P

BackgroundAdenomyosis (AM) is a benign uterine disease characterized pathologically by the invasion of endometrial tissue into the myometrium. The pathogenesis of AM is still far from clear. Although the gut microbiome and metabolomics are thought to contribute to a variety of diseases, the role of them in AM has not been revealed.ObjectiveTo investigate changes in the gut microbiota and derived metabolites in AM mice.MethodFemale ICR mice were randomly assigned to AM and control groups, and pituitary transplantation was employed to perform AM modeling. Then, the fecal samples were obtained for microbial (16S rRNA gene sequencing) and metabolomic (liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, LC-MS) analysis.ResultThe results of gut microbiota analysis showed that the intestinal microbiota composition of AM mice was altered. The ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes and the relative abundance of Lactobacillus in AM group increased compared with the control group. Sixty differential expressed metabolites were identified in intestinal metabolites, mainly involved in steroid hormone biosynthesis, cysteine and methionine metabolism, and alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism. Further, correlation analysis verified that L-methionine and L-cystine were negatively correlated with Bacteroides and positively correlated with Desulfovibrio. The Pregnenolone, Androsterone glucuronide, and Testosterone glucuronide were negatively correlated with Unidentified_Ruminococcaceae and Alistipes, whereas they positively correlated with Bacteroides.ConclusionAM mice have a unique gut microbiome and intestinal metabolites.

Hydrostatic thrust bearings have been applied in high speed and heavy load machine tools because they provide superior characteristics such as higher positional accuracy, greater stability, and lower friction. The energy consumption of the fluid system exceeds 40% of the total energy consumption of the machine tools To reduce the energy consumption, it is usually necessary to optimize comprehensive tribological properties of multi-pad hydrostatic thrust bearing in CNC vertical processing equipment from the perspective of the oil recess structure. Effects of oil recess structural parameters on comprehensive tribological properties in multi-pad hydrostatic thrust bearing are investigated using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and lubrication theory. Focusing on this problem, this study comprehensively investigates the effects of oil recess shape, oil recess depth, land width on the tribological properties of hydrostatic thrust bearing using numerical simulation method. The relationships between the optimal comprehensive tribological properties and structural parameters are determined. An experimental rig is set up to verify the correctness of the numerical simulation method. The results indicate that to get an optimal comprehensive performance from hydrostatic bearing based on low power consumption, it is necessary to choose a proper of oil recess structural parameters.

Abstract Background Osteoporosis and sarcopenia are major health issues in postmenopausal women due to their high prevalence and association with several adverse outcomes. However, no biomarkers may be used for screening and diagnosis. The current study investigated potential biomarkers for osteoporosis and/or sarcopenia in postmenopausal women. Methods A cross-sectional study on 478 healthy community-dwelling postmenopausal women aged 50–90 years was performed. Osteoporosis and sarcopenia were defined according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS). Results Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) was related to muscle strength (β = 0.19, p = 0.041) and function (β = 0.58, p = 0.004). Follistatin (β = − 0.27, p = 0.01) was related to muscle mass. Oxytocin (β = 0.59, p = 0.044) and DHEA (β = 0.51, p = 0.017) were related to bone mass. After adjusting for age, oxytocin (odds ratio (OR) 0.75; 95% confidence intervals (CI) 0.63–0.98; p = 0.019) was associated with osteoporosis, and DHEA (OR 0.73; 95% CI 0.51–0.96; p = 0.032) and follistatin (OR 1.66; 95% CI 1.19–3.57; p = 0.022) were associated with sarcopenia. Conclusions Postmenopausal women with sarcopenia were more likely to have lower DHEA levels and higher follistatin levels, and postmenopausal women with osteoporosis were more likely to have lower oxytocin levels.

Elderly male patients are susceptible to develop osteoporosis and sarcopenia, especially those with fragility fractures, hypogonadism, and prostate cancer with androgen deprivation therapy. However, at present, very few treatments are available for men with sarcopenia. Previous preclinical studies in ovariectomized rats have shown the promising effects of eldecalcitol in ameliorating the bone strength and muscle atrophy. We thus investigated the effects of eldecalcitol on androgen-deficient male mice. Six-week-old male mice underwent orchiectomy (ORX) or sham surgery. Mice were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 12/per group), including 1) sham mice, 2) ORX group, 3) ORX eldecalcitol 30 ng/kg, and 4) ORX eldecalcitol 50 ng/kg. Eldecalcitol increased bone mass and strength of femur in ORX mice. Eldecalcitol 30 ng/kg dose completely rescued ORX-induced muscle weakness. The RT-qPCR showed that eldecalcitol enhanced the mRNA levels of type I and IIa fibers. The expression levels of MuRF1 and Atrogin-1 of gastrocnemius in the eldecalcitol groups were much lower than that of the ORX group. It is assumed that eldecalcitol potentially acts via PI3K/AKT/FOXOs signaling pathway. These findings provide evidence for evaluating eldecalcitol as an investigational treatment for male patients with sarcopenia and osteoporosis.

On January 12, 2011, a very young juvenile Bryde's-like baleen whale was found stranded alive on the east coast of Hainan Island, in the South China Sea. Unfortunately, it died the next morning. This baleen whale showed some unique external morphology and skull features of the Omura's whale (Balaenoptera omurai). Subsequently, it was genetically identified as an Omura's whale using two different mitochondrial DNA markers. This study documents the first confirmed live stranding of a juvenile Omura's whale on Hainan Island, China. Our findings expand the known distribution range of this species in Chinese waters and may indicate that waters around Hainan Island in the South China Sea could be a potential breeding ground for the Omura's whale.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have opened up a new way for tumor therapy but simultaneously led to the occurrence of immune-related adverse events. We report a case of successful treatment of PD-1 inhibitor-associated colitis with fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). The patient was a palatal malignant melanoma who developed diarrhea and hematochezia accompanied by fever, gastrointestinal bleeding, and infection after the third treatment with PD-1 (Toripalimab). The patient received general treatment unsuccessful, corticosteroid therapy after initial success but rapid loss of response, and finally successful treatment after fecal microbiota transplantation.

The double-flowered lily ‘Red Twin’, in which stamens are transformed into petaloid organs, sometimes exhibits normal stamens owing to an unknown mechanism and thus greatly affecting its commercial quality. In this study, the morphogenesis of stamens and petaloid stamens in this cultivar grown under different temperature treatments were investigated. Two AGAMOUS-like genes were isolated and their expression levels were analyzed. The results showed that relatively high temperatures induced the morphogenesis of stamens, while relatively low temperatures promoted petaloidy in ‘Red Twin’. The stage with 1–6 mm flower buds was identified as the critical development period for stamen morphogenesis; furthermore, keeping the flower buds under relatively low temperatures in the 1–3 or 3–6 mm stages would be sufficient for the formation of petaloid stamens to a high degree. In addition, LrtAG1 and LrtAG2 showed the highest expression level in whorls 3 and 4 of 3–6 mm flower buds, respectively. LrtAG1 showed a higher reduction ratio than LrtAG2 when the flower buds were transferred to low temperature, implying that the decreased LrtAG1 expression level is associated with low temperature and might be correlated with the petaloidy of the stamens.

Abstract Background Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity (SO) have a greater impact on the elderly. This study aimed to explore whether there were sex differences in the prevalence and adverse outcomes of sarcopenia and SO in community-dwelling elderly individuals in East China. Methods This was a cross-sectional study that enrolled 213 males and 418 females aged > 65 years. Demographic characteristics, body composition, hand grip, gait speed, and indices of glucose and lipid metabolism were collected. Sarcopenia and SO were diagnosed using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia criteria. Results (1) The prevalence of sarcopenia was 19.2% in males and 8.6% in females. The prevalence of SO was 7.0% in males and 2.4% in females. (2) In males, the odds ratios (ORs) of osteoporosis and dyslipidemia in the SO group were 4.21-fold and 4.15-fold higher than those in the normal group, respectively. In females, the ORs of osteoporosis and hyperglycemia in the SO group were 1.12-fold and 4.21-fold higher than those in the normal group. Conclusions Males were more likely to be sarcopenic and to have SO than females using the AWGS criteria. Females with SO were more likely to have higher blood glucose, whereas males with SO were more likely to have osteoporosis and dyslipidemia.

Abstract Background The safety and efficiency of intravenous administration of tranexamic acid (TXA) in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains unconfirmed. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis on this topic. Methods We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PUBMED and EMBASE for randomized controlled trials on the topic. The results of this work are synthetized and reported in accordance with the PRISMA statement. Results Twenty-eight studies met our inclusion criteria. TXA reduced the incidence of postoperative reoperation of bleeding (relative risk [RR], 0.46; 95% confidence interval [CI]; 0.31–0.68), the frequency of any allogeneic transfusion (RR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.52–0.78) and the postoperative chest tube drainage in the first 24 h by 206 ml (95% CI − 248.23 to − 164.15). TXA did not significantly affect the incidence of postoperative cerebrovascular accident (RR, 0.93; 95%CI, 0.62–1.39), mortality (RR, 0.82; 95%CI, 0.53–1.28), myocardial infarction (RR, 0.90; 95%CI, 0.78–1.05), acute renal insufficiency (RR, 1.01; 95%CI, 0.77–1.32). However, it may increase the incidence of postoperative seizures (RR, 6.67; 95%CI, 1.77–25.20). Moreover, the subgroup analyses in on-pump and off-pump CABG, the sensitivity analyses in trials randomized more than 99 participants and sensitivity analyses that excluded the study with the largest number of participants further strengthened the above results. Conclusions TXA is effective to reduce reoperation for bleeding, blood loss and the need for allogeneic blood products in patients undergoing CABG without increasing prothrombotic complication. However, it may increase the risk of postoperative seizures.

Investigating the electromagnetic properties of magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) is beneficial for expanding their biomedical applications, especially in tumor hyperthermia. In this study, monodisperse Fe3O4 NPs of various shapes (i.e., quadrilateral-like, hexagon-like, rod-like, and triangle-like) were successfully prepared by a microwave-assisted thermal decomposition approach. The magnetic properties and inductive heating performance, as well as electromagnetic properties were analyzed systematically. The results showed that quadrilateral-like Fe3O4 NPs possessed excellent magneto-thermal effects and maximum specific absorption rate values of 226.4 W/g and 1409.6 W/g (390 kHz and 780 kHz, 12 A). Moreover, a sample filled with 70 wt. % quadrilateral-like NPs in paraffin showed a minimum reflection loss (RL) value of −33.4 dB, along with a broad absorption bandwidth of RL < −10 dB covering 2 GHz–18 GHz. The high magnetic loss may be derived from the eddy current loss and natural resonance. This study would deepen the understanding of microwave absorption properties of Fe3O4 NPs and enrich their microwave applications based on shape anisotropy.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the sun loach (Yasuhikotakia eos) was determined based on Illumina data in this study. The result showed that the closed double-stranded circular mitogenome was 16,738 bp in total length (GenBank accession number: MT800510) with 58.41% AT. The mitochondrial DNA consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PGCs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, 2 ribosomal (rRNA) genes, and 1 non-coding control region. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that Y. eos was most closely related to its congener Y. modesta. This work provides molecular information for further research on species identification and evolutionary relationships.

A facile strategy was developed to fabricate zinc (II) functionalized l-phenylalanine in situ grafted starch (Zn(II)@l-Phe-g-St). The structure of Zn(II)@l-Phe-g-St was proposed and well characterized, and the assays of antibacterial activity against typical bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli) and cytotoxicity of Hela cell were focused on. Boc-l-phenylalanine was used to achieve l-Phe-g-St by in situ grafting onto starch through esterification reaction after removal of Boc. It was confirmed that around 71.02% of NH2 of l-Phe complexed with Zn(II) by σ-coordinate bonds and the coordination number of Zn(II) approximated to 2. Zn(II)@l-Phe-g-St exhibited a good antibacterial activity against both Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli with increasing its concentration, and a relatively more effective antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis than Escherichia coli. Furthermore, Zn(II)@l-Phe-g-St was found to be very low toxicity towards Hela cells especially at the concentration below 40 μg ml−1.

Abstract Background Vitamin D deficiency is widespread in China, particularly among older adults. Factors associated with suboptimal vitamin D levels are not well defined. The present study was a population-based study that included 10 urban and suburban communities in Shanghai, to evaluate vitamin D status and its correlates among older adults. Method This cross-sectional study was based on study data for 3924 healthy men and women aged 65−95 years. Anthropometric and socioeconomic data were collected in June−July 2014. Serum 25(OH)D levels were detected using a chemiluminescence immunoassay. The following socioeconomic data were obtained through self-administered questionnaires: education level, lifestyle, residency, and dietary habits. A logistic regression model was used to assess associations between anthropometric factors, socioeconomic factors and serum 25(OH)D levels. Results Median levels of serum 25(OH)D in men and women were 22.73 and 19.99 ng/mL, respectively. Vitamin D deficiency was common in subjects, even though data collection was conducted during summer. Remaining life prediction is an effective way to optimize maintenance strategy and improve service life for light-emitting diode driving power in rail vehicle carriage. In this article, a Wiener process–based remaining life prediction method is proposed with the analysis of performance degradation data of light-emitting diode driving power in rail vehicle carriage. First, the temperature and humidity stress accelerated degradation tests are put forward in order to measure the output current of light-emitting diode driving power. Based on the output current, the accelerated degradation model is established. The drift and diffusion coefficients of the Wiener process are then obtained without prior information. Finally, the reliability of light-emitting diode driving power in rail vehicle carriage is assessed and the remaining lifetime is predicted after updating the degradation model parameters with Bayesian inference. The results show that the proposed method can improve the precision of assessment and reduce the uncertainty of prediction significantly. It also provides a potential solution for life prediction of other similar products.

SBA-15 mesoporous silicate was synthesized and functionalized with 3-aminopropyl organic groups through a post-synthesis method. The materials were characterized consecutively by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption analysis and solid-state magic-angle spinning 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR). Human c-myc anti-sense oligodeoxyneucleotide (AS-ODN) was selected as a model molecule to be loaded onto the surface of bare and functionalized SBA-15 via different loading conditions. It has been found that the amount of AS-ODN incorporated into the porous matrix is strongly dependent on the surface properties, pH of the loading solvent and AS-ODN concentration. The release behaviour of AS-ODN from modified SBA-15 materials was also investigated and depended on conditions chosen. Cellular uptake of the eluted AS-ODN into Hela cells was observed by fluorescent microscopy. The materials showed excellent cytocompatibility. The AS-ODN keeps full transfection and expression activities indicating its structural integrity. The functionalized SBA-15 is an excellent prospect as a biomedical material candidate for the future.
