A pH and glutathione sensitive assembly Fe3O4@ZIF-8-Zn-Mn was constructed via one step self-assembly in aqueous solution. This assembly can be used as tumor microenvironment responsive T1–T2 dual-mode magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent for tumor imaging.

Single-atom nanozyme (SAzyme) is the hot topic of the current nanozyme research. Its intrinsic properties, such as high activity, stability, and low cost, present great substitutes to natural enzymes. Moreover, its fundamental characteristics, i.e., maximized atom utilizations and well-defined geometric and electronic structures, lead to higher catalytic activities and specificity than traditional nanozymes. SAzymes have been applied in many biomedical areas, such as anti-tumor therapy, biosensing, antibiosis, and anti-oxidation therapy. Here, we will discuss a series of representative examples of SAzymes categorized by their biomedical applications in this review. In the end, we will address the future opportunities and challenges SAzymes facing in their designs and applications.

Although great progress has been made in artificial enzyme engineering, their catalytic performance is far from satisfactory as alternatives of natural enzymes. Here, we report a novel and efficient strategy to access high-performance nanozymes via direct atomization of platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) into single atoms by reversing the thermal sintering process. Atomization of Pt NPs into single atoms makes metal catalytic sites fully exposed and results in engineerable structural and electronic properties, thereby leading to dramatically enhanced enzymatic performance. As expected, the as-prepared thermally stable Pt single-atom nanozyme (PtTS-SAzyme) exhibited remarkable peroxidase-like catalytic activity and kinetics, far exceeding the Pt nanoparticle nanozyme. The following density functional theory calculations revealed that the engineered P and S atoms not only promote the atomization process from Pt NPs into PtTS-SAzyme but also endow single-atom Pt catalytic sites with a unique electronic structure owing to the electron donation of P atoms, as well as the electron acceptance of N and S atoms, which simultaneously contribute to the substantial enhancement of the enzyme-like catalytic performance of PtTS-SAzyme. This work demonstrates that thermal atomization of the metal nanoparticle-based nanozymes into single-atom nanozymes is an effective strategy for engineering high-performance nanozymes, which opens up a new way to rationally design and optimize artificial enzymes to mimic natural enzymes.

ConspectusFerritins are spherical iron storage proteins within cells that are composed of a combination of 24 subunits of two types, heavy-chain ferritin (HFn) and light-chain ferritin (LFn). They autoassemble naturally into a spherical hollow nanocage with an outer diameter of 12 nm and an interior cavity that is 8 nm in diameter. In recent years, with the constantly emerging safety issues and the concerns about unfavorable uniformity and indefinite in vivo behavior of traditional nanomedicines, the characteristics of native ferritin nanocages, such as the unique nanocage structure, excellent safety profile, and definite in vivo behavior, make ferritin-based formulations uniquely attractive for nanomedicine development. To date, a variety of cargo molecules, including therapeutic drugs (e.g., cisplatin, carboplatin, paclitaxel, curcumin, atropine, quercetin, gefitinib, daunomycin, epirubicin, doxorubicin, etc.), imaging agents (e.g., fluorescence dyes, radioisotopes, and MRI contrast agents), nucleic acids (e.g., siRNA and miRNA), and metal nanoparticles (e.g., Fe3O4, CeO2, AuPd, CuS, CoPt, FeCo, Ag, etc.) have been loaded into the interior cavity of ferritin nanocages for a broad range of biomedical applications from in vitro biosensing to targeted delivery of cargo molecules in living systems with the aid of modified targeting ligands either genetically or chemically. We reported that human HFn could selectively deliver a large amount of cargo into tumors in vivo via transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1)-mediated tumor-cell-specific targeting followed by rapid internalization. By the use of the intrinsic tumor-targeting property and unique nanocage structure of human HFn, a broad variety of cargo-loaded HFn formulations have been developed for biological analysis, imaging diagnosis, and medicine development. In view of the intrinsic tumor-targeting property, unique nanocage structure, lack of immunogenicity, and definite in vivo behavior, human HFn holds promise to promote therapeutic drugs, diagnostic imaging agents, and targeting moieties into multifunctional nanomedicines.Since the report of the intrinsic tumor-targeting property of human HFn, we have extensively explored human HFn as an ideal nanocarrier for tumor-targeted delivery of anticancer drugs, MRI contrast agents, inorganic nanoparticles, and radioisotopes. In particular, by the use of genetic tools, we also have genetically engineered human HFn nanocages to recognize a broader range of disease biomarkers. In this Account, we systematically review human ferritins from characterizing their tumor-binding property and understanding their mechanism and kinetics for cargo loading to exploring their biomedical applications. We finally discuss the prospect of ferritin-based formulations to become next-generation nanomedicines. We expect that ferritin formulations with unique physicochemical characteristics and intrinsic tumor-targeting property will attract broad interest in fundamental drug research and offer new opportunities for nanomedicine development.

The number of grains per panicle is one of the most important factors of rice yield and determinated by branch and spikelet number. Genetic and molecular mechanisms responsible for panicle branching and spikelet development remain unclear in rice. Here, we report a mutant lax2-4 mainly showing lax panicle, longer grains, a little abnormal spikelet, lower setting rate and abaxial curled leaf. Genetic analysis indicated that the defective panicle phenotype of lax2-4 was controlled by single recessive gene. Further mapping and re-sequencing revealed that the fourth exon of LAX2 was lost caused by an approximately 2-Mb INV in lax2-4, thus LAX2-4 could be a new allele of LAX2. Overexpression assays showed that lax panicle was rescued in correspondence with the gradually increased expression level of wild-type LAX2-4 transcript. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout of the fourth exon verified that LAX2-4 participates the regulation of sterile lemma and lemma development in rice. LAX2-4 could interact with an E-class gene, OsMADS1, and the fourth exon was necessary for its function. Collectively, we proposed that LAX2-4 plays a dual role in lateral spikelet and lemma development.

Developing artificial enzymes with the excellent catalytic performance of natural enzymes has been a long-standing goal for chemists. Single-atom catalysts with well-defined atomic structure and electronic coordination environments can effectively mimic natural enzymes. Here, we report an engineered FeN3P-centred single-atom nanozyme (FeN3P-SAzyme) that exhibits comparable peroxidase-like catalytic activity and kinetics to natural enzymes, by controlling the electronic structure of the single-atom iron active centre through the precise coordination of phosphorus and nitrogen. In particular, the engineered FeN3P-SAzyme, with well-defined geometric and electronic structures, displays catalytic performance that is consistent with Michaelis–Menten kinetics. We rationalize the origin of the high enzyme-like activity using density functional theory calculations. Finally, we demonstrate that the developed FeN3P-SAzyme with superior peroxidase-like activity can be used as an effective therapeutic strategy for inhibiting tumour cell growth in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, SAzymes show promising potential for developing artificial enzymes that have the catalytic kinetics of natural enzymes. Nanozymes can provide cost and stability advantages over natural enzymes, but they usually display low catalytic activity and inferior kinetics. Now, a highly active nanozyme is developed that shows comparable kinetics to horseradish peroxidase in the oxidation of a commonly used artificial substrate.

Nanozymes are nanomaterials with enzyme-like properties that have attracted significant interest owing to their capability to address the limitations of traditional enzymes such as fragility, high cost, and impossible mass production. Over the past decade, a broad variety of nanomaterials have been found to mimic the enzyme-like activity by engineering the active centers of natural enzymes or developing multivalent elements within nanostructures. Carbon nanomaterials with well-defined electronic and geometric structures have served as favorable surrogates of traditional enzymes by mimicking the highly evolved catalytic center of natural enzymes. In particular, by combining the unique electronic, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties, carbon nanomaterials-based nanozymes can offer a variety of multifunctional platforms for biomedical applications. In this review, we will introduce the enzymatic characteristics and recent advances of carbon nanozymes, and summarize their significant applications in biomedicine.

Household water purifiers (HWPs) are increasingly used to clean water at home, representing the last defense of chemical and microbial contaminants in drinking water. However, little is known about antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the HWPs. Here, we quantified ARB and ARGs on the reverse osmosis (RO) membranes of the HWPs using both culture-dependent and independent approaches. 84 ARGs conferring resistance to 11 antibiotics through three major mechanisms of antibiotic deactivation, efflux, and cellular protection were detected. For the first time, we found high-risk mcr-1, blaIMP, and blaVIM genes in some RO cartridges, which can confer bacterial resistance to the last-resort antibiotics colistin and carbapenems. Furthermore, 27 antibiotic-resistant opportunistic human pathogens were isolated from the RO filters, including a particularly dangerous blaNDM-1 carrying superbug that can transfer blaNDM-1 to the antibiotic susceptible bacteria by conjugation in the laboratory. The potential ARG horizontal transfer on the RO filter was also proposed. Overall, this study characterizes the RO filter-associated ARB and ARGs in HWPs and highlights their potential contaminations in drinking water.

Nanozymes are nanomaterials with intrinsic enzyme-like characteristics that have been booming over the past decade because of their capability to address the limitations of natural enzymes such as low stability, high cost, and difficult storage. Along with the rapid development and ever-deepening understanding of nanoscience and nanotechnology, nanozymes hold promise to serve as direct surrogates of traditional enzymes by mimicking and further engineering the active centers of natural enzymes. In 2007, we reported the first evidence that Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) have intrinsic peroxidase-mimicking activity, and since that time, hundreds of nanomaterials have been found to mimic the catalytic activity of peroxidase, oxidase, catalase, haloperoxidase, glutathione peroxidase, uricase, methane monooxygenase, hydrolase, and superoxide dismutase. Uniquely, a broad variety of nanomaterials have been reported to simultaneously exhibit dual- or multienzyme mimetic activity. For example, Fe3O4 NPs show pH-dependent peroxidase-like and catalase-like activities; Prussian blue NPs simultaneously possess peroxidase-, catalase-, and superoxide dismutase-like activity; and Mn3O4 NPs mimic all three cellular antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Taking advantage of the physiochemical properties of nanomaterials, nanozymes have shown a broad range of applications from in vitro detection to replacing specific enzymes in living systems. With the emergence of the new concept of "nanozymology", nanozymes have now become an emerging new field connecting nanotechnology and biology. Since the landmark paper on nanozymes was published in 2007, we have extensively explored their catalytic mechanism, established the corresponding standards to quantitatively determine their catalytic activities, and opened up a broad range of applications from biological detection and environmental monitoring to disease diagnosis and biomedicine development. Here we mainly focus on our progress in the systematic design and construction of functionally specific nanozymes, the standardization of nanozyme research, and the exploration of their applications for replacing natural enzymes in living systems. We also show that, by combining the unique physicochemical properties and enzyme-like catalytic activities, nanozymes can offer a variety of multifunctional platforms with a broad of applications from in vitro detection to in vivo monitoring and therapy. For instance, targeting antibody-conjugated ferromagnetic nanozymes simultaneously provide three functions: target capture, magnetic separation, and nanozyme color development for target detection. We finally will address the prospect of nanozyme research to become "nanozymology". We expect that nanozymes with unique physicochemical properties and intrinsic enzyme-mimicking catalytic properties will attract broad interest in both fundamental research and practical applications and offer new opportunities for traditional enzymology.

Atherosclerotic plaque rupture results in thrombus formation and vessel occlusion, and is the leading cause of death worldwide. There is a pressing need to identify plaque vulnerability for the treatment of carotid and coronary artery diseases. Nanomaterials with enzyme-like properties have attracted significant interest by providing biological, diagnostic and prognostic information about the diseases. Here we showed that bioengineered magnetoferritin nanoparticles (M-HFn NPs) functionally mimic peroxidase enzyme and can intrinsically recognize plaque-infiltrated active macrophages, which drive atherosclerotic plaque progression and rupture and are significantly associated with the plaque vulnerability. The M-HFn nanozymes catalyze the oxidation of colorimetric substrates to give a color reaction that visualizes the recognized active macrophages for one-step pathological identification of plaque vulnerability. We examined 50 carotid endarterectomy specimens from patients with symptomatic carotid disease and demonstrated that the M-HFn nanozymes could distinguish active macrophage infiltration in ruptured and high-risk plaque tissues, and M-HFn staining displayed a significant correlation with plaque vulnerability (r = 0.89, P < 0.0001).

In this work, CaF2:Ln3+ (Ln:Er,Er/Yb)/Nafion composite films were prepared using Nafion as modifications and matrices by dripping method. The composite films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Composite films are transparent and CaF2:Ln3+ (Ln:Er,Er/Yb) nanoparticles are well dispersed in Nafion films. The thicknesses of CaF2:Er3+/Nafion and CaF2:Er3+,Yb3+/Nafion composite film are about 77 and 73 μm, respectively. The nanoparticles in composite film possess cubic phase. CaF2:Er3+,Yb3+/Nafion composite film has stronger characteristic emission of Er3+ around 1530 nm with full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 73 nm and longer luminescence lifetimes of 22.04 μs (25.03%) and 100.77 μs (74.97%).

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is an attractive imaging modality, which is promising for clinical cancer diagnosis due to its advantages on deep tissue penetration and fine spatial resolution. However, few tumor catalytic/responsive PAI strategies are developed. Here, we design an exosome-like nanozyme vesicle for in vivo H2O2-responsive PAI of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). The intrinsic peroxidase-like activity of graphene quantum dot nanozyme (GQDzyme) effectively converts the 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) into its oxidized form in the presence of H2O2. The oxidized ABTS exhibits strong near-infrared (NIR) absorbance, rendering it to be an ideal contrast agent for PAI. Thus, GQDzyme/ABTS nanoparticle is a novel type of catalytic PAI contrast agent, which is sensitive to H2O2 produced from NPC cells. The establishment of a monitoring technique for imatinib is necessary in clinical and environmental toxicology. Leaf extracts of Lycoris longituba were used as reducing agent for the one-step synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-Ag nanocomposites. This nanocomposite was characterized by TEM, FTIR, XRD, and other instruments. Then, the graphene/Ag nanocomposite was used as a modifier to be cemented on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode. This electrode exhibited excellent electrochemical sensing performance. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed electrode could detect imatinib at 10 nM−0.28 mM with a low limit of detection. This electrochemical sensor also has excellent anti-interference performance and reproducibility.

Natural nanominerals (NNMs) are progressively deposited during earth’s formation. They have shown a broad range of applications from industrial catalysis, environmental treatment, and earth science to pharmaceutics due to their unique nanostructures and characteristics. Here, we first report that NNMs have intrinsic enzyme-like properties and show good biocompatibility. First, we characterized the morphology and structure of the six most representative NNMs including sepiolite, attapulgite, halloysite, montmorillonite, kaolinite, and diatomite by SEM, TEM, and XRD. Then, we quantitatively tested their peroxidase- (POD-), catalase- (CAT-), oxidase- (OXD-), and superoxide dismutase- (SOD-) like activities. The results indicate that different kinds of NNMs show varying degrees of POD-like, CAT-like, and SOD-like activities and minor OXD-like activity. Finally, we tested their cytotoxicity and found that the selected representative NNMs have no or less influence on cell viability, showing high biosafety. At present, NNMs have been widely used, mostly focusing on the physical and chemical properties, such as luminescence and conductivity. Our work promotes the understanding of NNMs, providing a new direction for the better application of NNMs.

Ferritins are spherical iron storage proteins within cells, composed of 24 subunits of two types, heavy-chain ferritin (HFn) and light-chain ferritin. Ferritins auto-assemble naturally into hollow nanocages with an outer diameter of 12 nm and an interior cavity 8 nm in diameter. Since the intrinsic tumor-targeting property of human HFn was first reported in 2012, HFn has been extensively explored for tumor-targeted delivery of anticancer drugs and diagnostic molecules, including radioisotopes and fluorophores, as well as inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) and chemotherapeutic drugs. This protocol provides four detailed procedures describing how to load four types of cargoes within HFn nanocages that are capable of accurately controlling cargo loading: synthesis of inorganic metal nanoparticles within the cavity of a wild-type human HFn nanocage (Procedure 1, requires ~5 h); loading of doxorubicin into the cavity of a wild-type human HFn nanocage (Procedure 2, requires ~3 d); loading Gd3+ into the cavity of a genetically engineered human HFn nanocage (Procedure 3, requires ~20 h); and loading 64Cu2+ radioisotope into the cavity of a genetically engineered human HFn nanocage (Procedure 4, requires ~3 h). Subsequent use of these HFn-based formulations is advantageous as they have intrinsic tumor-targeting capability and lack immunogenicity. Human HFn generated as described in this protocol can therefore be used to deliver therapeutic drugs and diagnostic signals as multifunctional nanomedicines.

Ferritin, an iron-storage protein, regulates cellular iron metabolism and oxidative stress. The ferritin structure is characterized as a spherical cage, inside which large amounts of iron are deposited in a safe, compact and bioavailable form. All ferritins readily catalyze Fe(II) oxidation by peroxides at the ferroxidase center to prevent free Fe(II) from participating in oxygen free radical formation via Fenton chemistry. Thus, ferritin is generally recognized as a cytoprotective stratagem against intracellular oxidative damage The expression of cytosolic ferritins is usually regulated by iron status and oxidative stress at both the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. The mechanism of ferritin-mediated iron recycling is far from clarified, though nuclear receptor co-activator 4 (NCOA4) was recently identified as a cargo receptor for ferritin-based lysosomal degradation. Cytosolic ferritins are heteropolymers assembled by H- and L-chains in different proportions. The mitochondrial ferritins are homopolymers and distributed in restricted tissues. They play protective roles in mitochondria where heme- and Fe/S-enzymes are synthesized and high levels of ROS are produced. Genetic ferritin disorders are mainly related to the L-chain mutations, which generally cause severe movement diseases. This review is focused on the biochemistry and function of mammalian intracellular ferritin as the major iron-storage and anti-oxidation protein.

Since the pioneering work focused on the “nanozyme” demonstrated for the first time that nanomaterials exert enzyme-like activity in 2007, more than 40 types of nanozymes have subsequently been reported. This chapter will introduce different nanomaterials with enzymatic activity including the peroxidase activity of nano Fe3O4, Co3O4, Cu2O, MnFe2O4, FeS, CeO2, BiFeO3, CoFe2O4, CdS, FeSe, FeTe, ZnFe2O4, graphene oxide, fullerene, and carbon nanotubes; oxidase activity of nano Au, Pt, Fe3O4, CoFe2O4, BiFeO3, ZnFe2O4, MnO2, and CuO; haloperoxidase activity of nano V2O5; and superoxide dismutase activity of nanoceria.

Nanozymes are nanomaterials exhibiting intrinsic enzyme-like characteristics that have increasingly attracted attention, owing to their high catalytic activity, low cost and high stability. This combination of properties has enabled a broad spectrum of applications, ranging from biological detection assays to disease diagnosis and biomedicine development. Since the intrinsic peroxidase activity of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) was first reported in 2007, >40 types of nanozymes have been reported that possess peroxidase-, oxidase-, haloperoxidase- or superoxide dismutase-like catalytic activities. Given the complex interdependence of the physicochemical properties and catalytic characteristics of nanozymes, it is important to establish a standard by which the catalytic activities and kinetics of various nanozymes can be quantitatively compared and that will benefit the development of nanozyme-based detection and diagnostic technologies. Here, we first present a protocol for measuring and defining the catalytic activity units and kinetics for peroxidase nanozymes, the most widely used type of nanozyme. In addition, we describe the detailed experimental procedures for a typical nanozyme strip-based biological detection test and demonstrate that nanozyme-based detection is repeatable and reliable when guided by the presented nanozyme catalytic standard. The catalytic activity and kinetics assays for a nanozyme can be performed within 4 h.

Nanomaterials with intrinsic enzyme-like activities (nanozymes), have been widely used as artificial enzymes in biomedicine. However, how to control their in vivo performance in a target cell is still challenging. Here we report a strategy to coordinate nanozymes to target tumor cells and selectively perform their activity to destruct tumors. We develop a nanozyme using nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanospheres which possess four enzyme-like activities (oxidase, peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase) responsible for reactive oxygen species regulation. We then introduce ferritin to guide nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanospheres into lysosomes and boost reactive oxygen species generation in a tumor-specific manner, resulting in significant tumor regression in human tumor xenograft mice models. Together, our study provides evidence that nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanospheres are powerful nanozymes capable of regulating intracellular reactive oxygen species, and ferritinylation is a promising strategy to render nanozymes to target tumor cells for in vivo tumor catalytic therapy., If decorated with the right surface modifications, nanoparticles can function as Trojan horses, transporting cell death-facilitating compounds to tumor cells. Here, the authors prepare a particle with four enzyme-like activities and show that ferritin can direct nanoparticles to tumor cells.

Autophagy is well-known as a conserved survival mechanism that protects cells from adverse environments, and autophagy-related protein 8 (ATG8) plays a key role in autophagy process as an essential component. However, the contribution of ATG8 to plant tolerance to environmental stresses is ambiguous. To gain insight into whether and how ATG8 gene functions in plant adaptation to adverse environment conditions, we characterized an ATG8 gene CaATG8c from pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), and found that the deduced amino acid sequence of CaATG8c gene contained the conserved necessary domains and residue for ATG8 functions. Under normal condition, the expression of CaATG8c was detected in all pepper tissues/organs, and its subcellular expression was located to the cytoplasm in onion epidermal cells. The silencing-expression of CaATG8c rendered pepper seedlings more sensitive to heat and salt stress by aggravating the chlorophyll degradation, MDA accumulation and SOD activity decrease. Unexpectedly, the over-expression of CaATG8c gene also reduced Arabidopsis tolerance to heat and salt stress by inhibiting the growth of primary roots and the generation of secondary roots, and disturbing the expression of stress response genes. Our results suggested that both silencing- and over-expression of CaATG8c gene conferred plants more sensitivity to heat and salt stress. Furthermore, the possible mechanism for CaATG8c silencing is speculated to the reduced ability to remove accumulated ROS, whereas for gene over-expression, it is supposed to the disturbance of ROS signal. We propose that the stable and timely expression of CaATG8c may be important for plant adaption to adverse environments.

Heat stress has become a major threat to crop production due to global warming; however, the mechanisms underlying plant high-temperature sensing are not well known. In plants, the membrane-anchored receptor-like kinases (RLKs) relay environmental signals into the cytoplasm. In a previous study, we isolated a wall-associated RLK-like (WAKL) gene CaWAKL20 from pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Here, the amino acid sequence of CaWAKL20 was characterized and found to consist of conserved domains of WAK/WAKL family, including an extracellular region containing a GUB-WAK binding domain and a degenerated EGF2-like domain; a transmembrane region; and an intercellular region with an STKc catalytic domain. Moreover, CaWAKL20 transcription was inhibited by heat stress, whereas it was induced by both ABA and H2O2 treatments. Silencing of CaWAKL20 enhanced pepper thermotolerance, while overexpression decreased Arabidopsis thermotolerance. Additionally, Arabidopsis lines overexpressing CaWAKL20 showed less sensitivity to ABA during seed germination and root growth. Finally, the survival rate of Arabidopsis seedlings under heat stress treatment was enhanced by ABA pre-treatment, while it was compromised by the overexpression of CaWAKL20. Salt accumulation on the surface of the soil layer driven by the strong evaporation is a natural phenomenon that usually happens in the dry season, particularly on the coastal lands reclaimed from tidal flats. However, the influence of salt accumulation on the distribution profile of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile gene elements (MGEs) remains unclear. In this study, we sampled a wild saline soil where the salt accumulation was frequently observed to investigate the vertical distribution profiles of ARGs and MGEs. The results showed that an increasing gradient of ARGs and MGEs was observed from the top to deep layer with the decreasing of electrical conductivity (EC1:5 values) indicating the salt-influenced attenuation of ARGs in the saline soil. The competing test suggested that the attenuation of ARGs in response to salinity gradient was attributable to the elimination of the ARG-harboring plasmids, due to the reduction of the relative fitness of plasmid-harboring strains. Additionally, the network analyses showed that the attenuation of ARGs might be associated with decreased abundance of Actinobacteria. Overall, this study identifies that salinity as an abiotic stress could re-shape the distribution of ARGs, which may influence the dissemination of ARGs in the environment.

Despite all the advances in multimodal imaging, it remains a significant challenge to acquire both magnetic resonance and nuclear imaging in a single dose because of the enormous difference in sensitivity. Indeed, nuclear imaging is almost 10(6)-fold more sensitive than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); thus, repeated injections are generally required to obtain sufficient MR signals after nuclear imaging. Here, we show that strategically engineered magnetoferritin nanoprobes can image tumors with high sensitivity and specificity using SPECT and MRI in living mice after a single intravenous injection. The magnetoferritin nanoprobes composed of (125)I radionuclide-conjugated human H-ferritin iron nanocages ((125)I-M-HFn) internalize robustly into cancer cells via a novel tumor-specific HFn-TfR1 pathway. In particular, the endocytic recycling characteristic of TfR1 transporters solves the nuclear signal blocking issue caused by the high dose nanoprobes injected for MRI, thus enabling simultaneous functional and morphological tumor imaging without reliance on multi-injections.
