Simple Summary: Salmonellosis is the second most reported gastrointestinal disorder in the European Union, resulting from the consumption of Salmonella-contaminated foods. Chickens are considered reservoirs of this pathogen among food-producing animals, for which hygienic and sanitary measures mitigate the risk to humans through the food chain. However, data about the presence of this pathogen in autochthonous Portuguese chickens or their by-products is scarce. In this context, the aim of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation on the occurrence of Salmonella spp. in autochthonous Portuguese laying hens raised in a semi-extensive system for small-scale production. The screening revealed an absence of Salmonella spp. in all cloaca, eggshell, and litter material samples collected (n = 279) from the 31 selected flocks. Considering these results and the fact that Salmonella is still the leading cause of food-borne outbreaks, the risk posed by Portuguese autochthonous chicken breeds produced through alternative and extensive farming methods can be considered low. However, this risk should not be neglected and needs to be further investigated, using a larger sample size, to validate this trend. The sustainability of agroecological systems, biodiversity protection, animal welfare, and consumer demand for higher quality products from alternative and extensive farming methods have reinforced interest in local breeds that are well adapted to low-input environments. However, food safety needs to be safeguarded to reinforce consumer confidence. The aim of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation on the occurrence of Salmonella spp. in eggshells, hen's cloaca, and litter materials from autochthonous Portuguese laying hens raised in a semi-extensive system for small-scale production. A total of 279 samples from 31 flocks belonging to 12 farms were obtained, with 63 samples from the "Preta Lusitânica" breed, and 72 samples each from the remaining autochthonous breeds, namely, "Branca", "Amarela", and "Pedrês Portuguesa". Simple Summary: Enterococci are among the most responsible agents for nosocomial infections and are globally prevalent antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. The risk of calves being fed colostrum contaminated with these bacteria or antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, leading to the colonization of their gastrointestinal tract, is a concern of public health. The objective of this study was to investigate whether bovine colostrum can act as a reservoir and vehicle for the dissemination of antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus spp. via the food chain. The sensitivity to 14 antibiotics using the disk diffusion method, as well as the presence of antibiotic-resistant genes and virulence genes, were analyzed in calf colostrum samples. E. faecalis, E. faecium and E. gallinarum were identified in the colostrum samples. The results demonstrated a very high percentage (92.1%) of isolates classified as multidrug-resistant (≥3 antimicrobial classes). Additionally, 52% of the isolates showed the presence of ≥4 virulence genes. E. faecium was most likely to carry erythromycin and tetracycline resistance genes, as well as virulence genes. This study revealed that colostrum serves as a reservoir and/or vehicle for the spread of antibiotic resistance and virulence genes. These results have to be analyzed in a One Health perspective to better combat this spread to humans, other animals and the environment. Enterococci are considered among the most prevalent global multidrug-resistant microorganisms globally. Their dissemination is a global concern, particularly by food-producing animals for both animals and humans. The aim of this study was to identify the species and investigate the antibiotic resistance and virulence profile of Enterococcus in bovine colostrum. Out of 88 presumptive Enterococcus isolates, species identification and susceptibility to 14 antimicrobials were tested using the disk diffusion method. An analysis of the antibiotic resistance and virulence genes was performed on the most prevalent species, using specific PCR assays. Enterococcus faecalis (54.5%), E. faecium (14.8%) and E. gallinarum (6.8%) were the identified species. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of E. gallinarum in bovine colostrum. The majority of the isolates showed resistance to quinupristin-dalfopristin (95.9%), erythromycin (80.7%), tetracycline (80.7%) and streptomycin (58%). Ninety-two percent of isolates were classified as multidrug-resistant. The most frequently detected resistance genes were tet(K) (61.1%), tet(M) (75.9%), tet(L) (90.7%), erm(B) (55.6%) and ant(6)-Ia (46.3%). The most prevalent virulence factors were cpd, esp, agg and cylLL. Enterococcus faecium showed a higher probability of carrying the erm(C), tet(M), ace and gel(E) genes (p < 0.05). These results demonstrated that colostrum can constitute an important reservoir and vehicle for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance and virulence genes to the three niches included in a One Health perspective (humans, animals and the environment), highlighting the importance of hygiene sanitary measures to mitigate colostrum microbial contamination. Simple Summary: Numerous studies have already reported the presence of different antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus species in food-producing animals, animal products and pet food. However, studies specifically evaluating antimicrobial resistance in Enterococcus spp. in ornamental animals and their food are scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to identify Enterococcus spp. and their antibiotic-resistant patterns in ornamental animal feed, as this could lead to the spread of antimicrobial resistance to humans due to their close contact with these animals. Enterococcus is a bacterial genus that is strongly associated with nosocomial infections and has a high capacity to transfer and acquire resistance genes. In this study, the main objective was to evaluate the presence of Enterococcus species in ornamental animal feed and characterize their antimicrobial resistance and virulence factors. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined using 14 antimicrobial agents by the disk diffusion method, complemented by genotypic analysis to identify Enterococcus species and the presence of 14 antimicrobial resistance and 10 virulence genes. From 57 samples of ornamental animal feed, 103 Enterococcus isolates were recovered from 15 bird, 9 fish and 4 reptile feed samples. Enterococcus isolates were highly resistance to rifampicin (78%) and erythromycin (48%), and 48% of isolates were classified as multidrug-resistant. Enterococcus faecalis (36.7%) and E. faecium (31.7%) were the species most frequently identified. Most isolates carried the resistance genes ermB (57%) and tetL (52%) and the virulence genes, cylL (52%) and esp (40%). Enterococcus gallinarum was the species with the highest number of multidrug-resistant isolates (50%) and virulence genes (80%). These results highlight the high levels of antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus spp. present in ornamental animal feed and the growing interaction of these animals with humans as a public health concern. Colistin is a high priority, last-resort antibiotic recklessly used in livestock and poultry farms. It is used as an antibiotic for treating multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections as well as a growth promoter in poultry and animal farms. The sub-therapeutic doses of colistin exert a selection pressure on bacteria leading to the emergence of colistin resistance in the environment. Colistin resistance gene, mcr are mostly plasmid-mediated, amplifying the horizontal gene transfer. Food products such as chicken, meat, pork etc. disseminate colistin resistance to humans through zoonotic transfer. The antimicrobial residues used in livestock and poultry often leaches to soil and water through faeces. This review highlights the recent status of colistin use in food-producing animals, its association with colistin resistance adversely affecting public health. The underlying mechanism of colistin resistance has been explored. The prohibition of over-the-counter colistin sales and as growth promoters for animals and broilers has exhibited effective stewardship of colistin resistance in several countries. The rabbit is considered an ideal animal model for studies that describe abnormalities in the testicles due to the similar morphogenetic mechanisms of sexual development and diseases commonly found in humans. The aim of this study was to determine the male sexual differentiation of the New Zealand rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) through development. The gestational age was estimated and classified as 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 23 and 28 gestational days. The morphological and sexual determination were performed by histological analysis of the reproductive tract in the embryos and fetuses (9-28 days) as well as by immunohistochemistry- Desert hedgehog-Dhh– (testis-specific protein on Y chromosome– 16, 20, 23 days and adult rabbits). Gonads were observed from the 14th day in an undifferentiated stage and with homogeneous aspect. Sexual differentiation was observed from the 16th day with presence of cells forming gonadal cords and Dhh+ cells in the gonadal parenchyma. From the 18th gestational day testicular cords were observed, which evolved into organized seminiferous tubules. The formation of the efferent ducts and ductus deferens and epididymis was observed on the 20th and 23rd days, respectively. The differentiation of the external genitalia occurred from the 23rd days from the anogenital distance and was identified to identify the penile structures. In summary, the features of the sexual differentiation were determined by observation of the Dhh+ protein in embryos from the 16th day to adulthood, and the morphological particularities observed from the 18th gestational day, determined by differentiation of the external genitalia from the 23rd day. COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which has infected more than 4 million people with 278 892 deaths worldwide as of 11 May 2020. This disease, which can manifest as a severe respiratory infection, has been declared as a public health emergency of international concern and is being treated with a variety of antivirals, antibiotics and antifungals. This article highlights the administration of antimicrobials in COVID-19 patients worldwide, during the 2019-20 pandemic. It is imperative to be aware of the unreported amounts of antibiotics that have been administered worldwide in just a few months and a marked increase in antimicrobial resistance should therefore be expected. Due to the lack of data about antimicrobial use during this pandemic, the global impact on the emergence of new antimicrobial resistance is as yet unknown. This issue must be at the forefront of public health policymaking and planning in order that we are prepared for the potentially severe consequences for human and animal health and the environment. Abstract There are different types of effluents from farming operations including untreated slurry (a mixture of manure, urine, split feed, and water), and treated slurry that normally is filtered to separate the solid fraction from the liquid fraction. With the amount of slurry applied on the soils as fertiliser every year, there are necessary to measure the leaching of microbial capable of transmitting infective agents that can be normally on slurry, because slurry can be a potential biohazard capable of transmitting infective agents. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and survival of Escherichia coli (E. coli) on liquid fraction of dairy slurry, with the addition of different treatments during storage, such as addition of Biochar, beneficial microorganisms, sulphuric acid and the combinations of them. All the applied treatments to slurry show statistically significant differences (P < 0.001), according to the different sampling dates. Results showed that there are conditions and treatments that benefit the survival probability of E. coli , the treatments that include the acidification of slurry have the highest averages of CFU/ml (243288.3 at 37 °C; 136584 at 44 °C). These results can contribute to the improvement of the quality of slurry applied on soils, beneficiating agriculture but also public health. The azygos anterior cerebral artery is a rare variant, characterized by the absence of the anterior communicating artery and the union of two proximal segments of the anterior cerebral artery, forming a single trunk and ascending through the interhemispheric fissure. Porcine hokovirus (PHoV), also referred to as porcine parvovirus 4 (P-PARV4), a recently discovered parvovirus of swine that is closely related to human parvovirus 4/5 (H-PARV4/5), was first described in Hong Kong. To evaluate the occurrence of P-PARV4 in Portuguese wild boars in the hunting season of 2011/2012, liver and serum samples were tested. P-PARV4 was detected in 24 % of the wild boars analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis showed a close relationship between the P-PARV4 isolates and other P-PARV4 reference strains. This virus appears to be emerging, with yet unknown implications for public health. Since its emergence, canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) has caused disease pandemics with severe gastroenteritis signs, infecting especially puppies. As a consequence of CPV rapid evolution a variety of genetic and antigenic variants have been reported circulating worldwide. The detection of additional variants of CPV circulating in the dog population in Portugal suggests monitoring of the disease is useful. The objectives of this study were to further detect and characterize circulating field variants from suspected CPV diseased dogs that were admitted to veterinary clinics distributed throughout the country, during 2012–2014. Of the 260 fecal samples collected, 198 were CPV positive by PCR, and CPV antigen was detected in 61/109 samples by Immunochromatographic (IC) test. The restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of 167 samples revealed that 86 were the CPV-2c. Sequence analysis of the 198 strains confirmed that CPV-2c were the dominant variant (51.5%), followed by CPV-2b (47.5%) and CPV-2a (1%). The variants were irregularly distributed throughout the country and some were detected with additional non-synonymous mutations in the VP2 gene. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the isolates were similar to other European strains, and that this virus continues to evolve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is the most important enteric virus infecting canids worldwide. The purpose of this study was to detect CPV in naturally infected dogs from several veterinary clinics distributed throughout Portugal between 2012 and 2014 and to identify risk factors associated with CPV infection. From 209 dogs suspected of being infected with CPV, historical data and clinical signs were collected. Fecal samples were screened for CPV by PCR assay and those positive were confirmed by sequencing. The data was analyzed using logistic regression to investigate associations between each of the predisposing factors and CPV status. Of the samples collected, 77.5% tested CPV-positive. Statistical analysis showed that animals in the three age categories ( p < 0.001) were at list 12 times more likely to be CPV-positive than older animals. The anthelminthic treatment [OR = 0.45, p = 0.04] and the rectal temperature (hypothermia, [OR = 0.12, p = 0.004]) contributed to decrease the likelihood of the dogs be infected with CPV. On the other hand, clinical signs such as depression [OR = 4.4, p = 0.02] and dehydration status [OR = 2.38, p = 0.001] made dogs more likely to be CPV-infected. The results indicate that although having a high morbidity, only 18% of the Portuguese dog population died in the study. Some of the risk factors identified in this study have not been commonly reported, yet they are easy to obtain and can be used as prognostic indicators in the veterinary practice. The implementation process for Digital Terrestrial Television (TDT) was begun in Argentina in September of 2009, after the publication of Law 1148/09 which created the Sistema Argentino de Televisión Digital Terrestre (SATVD-T), based on the Japanese-Brazilian ISDB-T standard (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting Terrestrial). The choice of this norm and the steps taken to expand digital technology take place within a particular national socio-political context characterized by a hyper-dynamism in communication policies. This article looks to reconsider notions of access and participation within the framework of the implantation of a new technology. In this sense, it defines three historical stages of analysis tied to the development of media systems, particularly television, which contribute to showing the mutations in the conceptual map described in the article. Purpose: This study's purpose was to evaluate the aging effect on the bond strength of 4 adhesive systems on primary dentin 24 hours and 6 months after bonding. Methods: The crowns of extracted, caries-free primary molars were grounded and flat surfaces were prepared and distributed into 4 groups (n=7-9). The adhesives Scotch-bond Multi-purpose (SMP), Single Bond (SB), Clearfil SE Bond (CSB), and Adper Prompt L-Pop (APL) were applied with the composite resin Filtek Z-250. Specimens were stored in distilled water (37°C/24h), the crowns were sectioned, and 0.8-mm² resin-dentin sticks were obtained and divided into 2 groups: (1) 24h; and (2) 6m. Each group's specimens were tested under tensile at 0.5 mm/minute until they fractured. The fractured sticks were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The data were analyzed by 2-way repeated measures: analysis of variance; Tukey's test (P<.05); and Kruskal-Wallis test (P<.05). Results: The mTBS (MPa) means values were: SMP=33.28 (2.05), SB=23.27 (4.78), APL=20.64 (10.66), and CSB=18.94 (11.94) for the 24-hour group; and SMP=30.59 (6.29), SB=22.39 (5.9), CSB=21.50 (10.67), and APL=17.19 (6.88) for the 6-month group. The most frequent fracture type found was cohesive failure of the adhesive and mixed, with no statistically significant difference found between the groups. With the increase of animal slurry produced from livestock production, the monitoring and mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) and ammonia (NH 3) emissions represent a major issue. Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been used to evaluate the long-term environmental effects of applied strategies and technologies on cattle slurry management for mitigation of environmental harmful gases. This study was carried on two main aims: first, the effect of the addition of sulphuric acid (SA), biochar (SBi) or A + Bi to liquid cattle-slurry (treated systems) on gas emissions during storage compared to the untreated system (S) was investigated in a laboratory-controlled experiment; second, the environmental implications of each treated or untreated system were assessed through a LCA approach according to ISO 14040/44. Five CML 2001 impact categories were used: eutrophication potential (EP), acidification potential (AP), global warming potential (GWP), human toxicity potential (HTP) and Ozone Layer Depletion Potential (ODP). Comparisons were based on 1 ton fresh dairy cattle slurry. The environmental profile of untreated system showed lower efficiency in mitigation of total GHG and NH 3 emissions (0.0312 and 0.0001 kg CO 2 -eq respectively), during storage period and greater impact on GWP and HTP categories. The electricity consumption in mechanical separation dominated the environmental impacts. From the three proposed treated systems, SA showed the highest efficiency on mitigation of gas emissions compared to the other treatments, reducing NH 3 , CH 4 and CO 2 emissions respectively in 61%, 98% and 15%, when compared to the SBi system. In all categories, acidified slurry also showed the lowest environmental impact relative to other treated systems and the benefit was more evident when the impacts were expressed per kilogram of nitrogen in the slurry. Therefore, LCA methodology was of great importance to assess the environmental implications of the treatments and acidification can be considered as an effective technique on the mitigation of environmental implications of livestock production and cattle-effluent valorization. Bacterial osteomyelitis is a major clinical challenge in human and veterinary patients. This infection is an infrequent but feared complication of orthopedic surgery and is mainly caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of dalbavancin (dosed for either 7 or 14 days) in an MRSA-osteomyelitis tibial bone model. A total of 39 rats were included in the study. All animals received an inoculum of a clinical strain of MRSA (106 colony-forming units [CFU]) injected into the proximal tibia under general anesthesia. Dalbavancin was injected intraperitoneally for 7 or 14 days in 13 animals each; the remaining 13 animals received saline solution. After treatment, the animals were sacrificed. Infected tibiae were recovered for histological evaluation and microbiological analysis (MRSA count per gram of bone). Rats that received dalbavancin showed a statistically significant reduction of MRSA counts compared with the control group: median 0 CFU/g bone (14 days of dalbavancin) vs. 70 CFU/g bone (7 days of dalbavancin) and 1600 CFU/g bone (control). Histological evaluation showed typical signs of osteomyelitis in the control group, whereas there were no signs of bone infection in 92% of the rats that received 14 days of dalbavancin. In equatorial Brazil, the association of Burkitt lymphoma and Epstein-Barr virus manifests at high rates. Here, we report, for the first time, amplifications of aurora kinase genes (AURKA/B) in a patient with a history of periodontal abscess and the presence of a remaining nodule, diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma and Epstein-Barr virus, and/HIV positive. The patient was a 38-year-old man who presented with a 2-week-old severe jaw pain and a 3-day-old severe bilateral headache. He had a history of human papilloma virus. Interphase FISH analysis showed AURKA and AURKB amplification. The patient's condition worsened, progressing to death a month after the initial care. Changes in the MYCC and AURKA pathways are directly associated with genomic instability. Thus, MYCC rearrangements and higher expression of AURKA/B may be associated with therapy resistance, highlighting the importance of AURKA/B evaluation in Burkitt lymphoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decomposition of dairy cows' excreta on housing floor leads to ammonia and greenhouse gases production, yet factors affecting total emissions have not been fully disclosed. This work aimed to assess the impact of lactation stage, feeding system and sampling time on gaseous emission potential of cow's faeces and urine in laboratory chambers systems. Individual faeces and urine were collected from two groups of four cows, at peak and post peak lactation, from three commercial farms with distinct feeding systems: total mixed ration (TMR), total mixed ration plus concentrate at robot (TMR + robot), and total mixed ration plus concentrate in automatic feeders (TMR + AF). Samples were collected before a.m. (T8h), at middle day (T12h), and before p.m. (T17h) milking. In a laboratory chambers system, faeces and urine were mixed in a ratio of 1.7:1, and ammonia and greenhouse gases emissions were monitored during 48-h. Cumulative N–N 2 O emissions were the highest in TMR + robot system, post peak cows and sampling time T17h. An interaction between stage of lactation and sampling time was detected for N–NH 3 and N–N 2 O (g/kg organic soluble N) emissions. Post peak cows also produced the highest cumulative N–NH 3 emissions. The placenta is a temporal, dynamic and diverse organ with important immunological features that facilitate embryonic and fetal development and survival, notwithstanding the fact that several aspects of its formation and function closely resemble tumor progression. Placentation in mammals is commonly used to characterize the evolution of species, including insights into human evolution. Although most placentas are discarded after birth, they are a high-yield source for the isolation of stem/progenitor cells and are rich in extracellular matrix (ECM), representing an important resource for regenerative medicine purposes. Interactions among cells, ECM and bioactive molecules regulate tissue and organ generation and comprise the foundation of tissue engineering. In the present article, differences among several mammalian species regarding the placental types and classifications, phenotypes and potency of placenta-derived stem/ progenitor cells, placental ECM components and current placental ECM applications were reviewed to highlight their potential clinical and biomedical relevance. Background: Silent atrial fibrillation is a frequent etiology of cryptogenic stroke. Spontaneous conversion of atrial fibrillation to sinus rhythm results in atrial stunning. Objective: To evaluate if the presence of a lower left atrial appendage peak emptying velocity (LAAV) after a cryptogenic stroke is associated with the occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF). Methods: We retrospectively selected consecutive patients with an acute ischemic stroke that had a transoesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) performed in the first 30 days of the acute event. Documented AF or potential cardioembolic sources in the TEE were considered exclusion criteria. We assessed the LAAV. During follow‐up, we evaluated the occurrence of new‐onset AF and the combined endpoint of death or new ischemic stroke. Results: We studied 73 consecutive patients, during a mean follow‐up period of 54.9 ± 19.3 months. Seven developed AF, and 13 had the combined endpoint. LAAV was independently associated with AF occurrence (HR: 0.93, 95% CI: 0.88–0.99; P = .016). Patients with a LAAV ≤ 46.5 cm/s (AUC: 0.766, 95% CI: 0.579–0.954; P = .021) had a lower survival rate free from AF occurrence (Log‐rank, P < .001) and free from the combined endpoint of death or ischemic stroke (Log‐rank, P = .010). Conclusion: A lower LAAV was associated with AF occurrence and the combined endpoint of death or ischemic stroke after an initial episode of cryptogenic stroke. The aim of this study was to know the embryonic and fetal development of the female rabbit genital system (Oryctolagus cuniculus), describing its main phases and the moment of sexual differentiation. Eleven pregnant New Zealand female rabbits were used in different gestational phases. The day of coitus was determined as day 0. For each stage a minimum of two animals was considered. The samples were obtained every two days from the ninth day post-coitus (dpc) until the 28th dpc. The gestational period was divided in two: animals with undifferentiated sex (group 1) and animals with differentiated sex (group 2). The ages of embryos and fetuses were estimated through the crown-rump method. Subsequently, embryos and fetuses were dissected, fixed and processed to be embedded in paraffin (Histosec). The histological analysis was performed on sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Immunohistochemical analysis to determine sexual differentiation was performed on samples from the 16th, 18th and 28th dpc. Desert Hedgehog (Dhh) and Indian Hedgehog (Ihh) primary antibodies, respectively, were used to identify cells of the male and female germinal epithelium. The immunohistochemical results showed that at the 16th dpc, female sexual differentiation was evident, since positive expression of the Ihh protein was observed. Sexual differentiation was obtained through histological analysis on the 18th dpc and through anatomical observation of the external genitalia on the 24th dpc. Knowing the characteristics of the embryonic and fetal development of the female rabbit genital system as well as the moment of sexual differentiation make it possible to establish bases for future research that address the physiology and pathology of these organs. Thus, any alteration in the chain of events of sexual determination and differentiation must search for an explanation from the knowledge of the possible normal mechanisms affected. We tested the influence of four polymorphisms and gene duplication in CYP2D6 on in vivo enzyme activity in a Chilean mestizo population in order to identify the most relevant genetic profiles that account for observed phenotypes in this ethnic group. CYP2D6 *2 (2850C>T), *3 (2549A>del), *4 (1846G>A), *17 (1023C>T) and gene duplication were determined by PCR-RFLP or PCRL in a group of 321 healthy volunteers. Individuals with different variant alleles were phenotyped by determining debrisoquine 4-hydroxylase activity as a metabolic ratio (MR) using a validated HPLC assay. Minor allele frequencies were 0.41, 0.01, 0.12 and 0.00 for CYP2D6 *2, *3, *4 and *17 variants, respectively, and the duplication frequency was 0.003. Genotype analysis correlated with phenotypes in 18 of 23 subjects (78.3%). 11 subjects were extensive metabolizers (EM), 8 were intermediate metabolizers (IM), 2 were poor metabolizers (PM) and 2 were ultra-rapid metabolizers (UM) which is fairly coincident with expected phenotypes metabolic ratios ranged from 0.11 to 126.41. The influence of CYP2D6 *3 was particularly notable, although only heterozygote carriers were present in our population. Individuals homozygous for *4 were always PM. As expected, the only subject with gene duplication was UM. In conclusion, there was a clear effect of genotype on observed CYP2D6 activity. Classification of EM, PM and UM through genotyping was useful to characterize CYP2D6 phenotype in the Chilean mestizo population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare congenital disease characterized by the formation of blisters following minimal trauma. Oral health can be compromised by oral bullae, perioral fibrosis, ankyloglossia, and a high risk for dental caries, all of which lead to a decreased quality of life. The purpose of this paper is to report the case of an 11- year-old female who presented with autosomal recessive dystrophic EB. Besides the skin manifestations, the extra- and intra-oral exams revealed lesions on the lips and mucosa, microstomia, ankyloglossia, depapillated tongue, and carious teeth. This case emphasizes that patients diagnosed with EB require multidisciplinary care, with the dentist playing an important role in oral health management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Rattlesnakes (Crotalus ravus and Crotalus triseriatus) have some compounds that resemble polypeptides and proteins in their venoms which can be used in therapeutic treatment as antibacterial compounds. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the antibacterial and hemolytic activity of two rattlesnake venoms. The results of the present study indicate that the evaluated venoms have bactericidal activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an important bacterium that affects animals and humans, thereby providing a new and efficient treatment alternative against this pathogenic bacterium. Rattlesnakes have venoms with a complex toxin mixture comprised of polypeptides and proteins. Previous studies have shown that some of these polypeptides are of high value for the development of new medical treatments. The aim of the present study is to evaluate, in vitro, the antibacterial and hemolytic activity of Crotalus triseriatus and Crotalus ravus venoms. A direct field search was conducted to obtain Crotalus triseriatus and Crotalus ravus venom samples. These were evaluated to determine their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa through the techniques of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC). Hemolytic activity was also determined. Antibacterial activity was determined for treatments (Crotalus triseriatus 2) CT2 and (Crotalus ravus 3) CR3, obtaining a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of 50 µg/mL and a Minimum Bactericidal Concentration of 100 µg/mL against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. CT1 (Crotalus triseriatus 1), CT2, and CR3 presented hemolytic activity; on the other hand, Crotalus ravus 4 (CR4) did not show hemolytic activity. The results of the present study indicate for the first time that Crotalus triseriatus and Crotalus ravus venoms contain some bioactive compounds with bactericidal activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa which could be used as alternative treatment in diseases caused by this pathogenic bacterium.
