- Abstract
Analiza socijalnih i demografskih aspekata mortaliteta uzrokovanog pandemijom 1918. i 1919. u Splitu nije pokazala odstupanja u odnosu na druge prostore Hrvatske i svijeta. Na taj su način dobno-spolni, prostorni i socijalni okvir mortaliteta te medijski okvir analogni drugim nacionalnim i inozemnim istraživanim područjima., The Spanish flu pandemic is considered the largest and most dangerous epidemic at the beginning of the 20th century affecting most of the world today. The Spanish flu pandemic did not bypass the territory of Croatia (at the time, Croatia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy), nor its southern coastal region of Dalmatia and the city of Split. Using the example of the city Split, the paper analyses the spatial and demographic determinants of population mortality from the Spanish flu between 1918 and 1919, i.e., from March 1918 to April 1919. The paper is based on the data of the Church Death registers kept in the Archbishop’s Archives in Split and newspaper articles. The analysis of the spatial distribution of mortality within urban settlements showed that the number of deaths per urban settlement

- Abstract
Based on selected cartographic depictions of Korčula from the early modern age, the paper examines the geographical knowledge about that island at the time the maps were made. Special attention is directed to the hitherto unknown map of the island of Korčula from the second half of the 16th or the first half of the 17th century, which is kept in the Archivio do Stato di Venezia, given that it shows a very detailed escription of the island of Korčula, especially its western part. The objective of this paper, using the example of the island of Korčula, is to point out the importance of cartographic renderings as an important source of spatial data and to determine whether there was a gradual improvement in the quality of the displayed geographical content in accordance with the assumed development of geographical knowledge and cartographic techniques from the beginning of the 16th century to the end of the 18th century. On the basis of the selected cartographic depictions of the island of Korčula, the significance of the island of Korčula in maritime and geographic frameworks characterized by different political interests, primarily that of Venice, was confirmed. The diachronic series of early modern geographical maps and nautical charts points to the gradual development of geographical knowledge about the island of Korčula, as well as to the improvement of the quality of graphical visualization of the relevant spatial data about that Croatian island., U radu se na temelju odabranih kartografskih prikaza Korčule iz ranoga novog vijeka razmatraju geografske spoznaje o tom otoku u vrijeme izrade karata.

illegitimate births, extra-marital birth, births outside marriage, Croatia, islands - Abstract
Within Europe, Croatia has always been noted for its low rate of births outside marriage. In relation to other European countries, only Greece, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina have lower extra-marital birth rates than Croatia. Croatia is particularly heterogeneous in terms of the extra-marital birth rate. An analysis of various settlements shows that the country is divided into two parts: the northwest part with Istria, where the extra-marital birth rate is significantly higher than the national average, and central and eastern Slavonia with central and southern Dalmatia, where the rate is the lowest. In this southern area, the island of Korčula stands out because of its very high extra-marital birth rate. Compared to the other islands, Korčula has a much higher rate, which increased steadily between 1971 and 2017 (from 12% to 38%). On the other islands (Rab, Krk, Pag, Ugljan and Pašman, Brač, and Hvar), the extra-marital birth rate during the same period ranged between 5% and 10%. Only Cres, Lošinj and especially Vis showed higher rates (25% on Cres and Lošinj, 32% on Vis). The objective of this research was to analyze the trends of births outside marriage on the larger Croatian islands for nearly fifty years (1970-2019). Our research focused on the islands of Korčula (especially the western part - Vela Luka and Blato) and Cres and Lošinj, which stood out from the other islands throughout the observation period because of significantly higher rates of children born outside marriage. Along with data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics about birth rates, information from 19th-century birth registers was also used to explain the reasons for births outside marriage. The extra-marital birth rates in Croatia and islands (1960-2019) could apply to other European countries. Also, this analysis may serve as a basis for further research into the sociological, anthropological, and ethnological character of the island.

Sea charts, the Adriatic Sea, Early Modern Symbols, Imagology - Abstract
The paper aims to explore the role of the early modern cartographic decorative and imagological elements, used for practical navigation (e.g., orientation), as well as carriers of ideological/political/cultural or any other symbolic message. The artistic features of the cartographic content on charts of various provenance (Venetian on one hand and Ottoman on the other) of the Adriatic Sea, primarily compass roses or graphical element of sailing-boats, saints, animals or (terrestrial) landscape markers were correlated in order to reveal the diversity of messages they communicate. However, a short overview of the subjecy indicates a confronting narrative of the two distinct state cartographies on the Adriatic in the time of the Sultan Suleiman el Kanuni, the Ottoman of Piri Reis and the Venetian one of the Italian famous isolario- makers. Also, the research provides insights into the elements of collaborative and shared mapmaking practices.

phylloxera ,Dalmatia ,agricultural landscape ,depopulation ,emigration - Abstract
The paper discusses the infl uence of phylloxera on the socio-economic features and landscape of Dalmatia, a region of Croatia. The aim of the paper is to investigate the spread of phylloxera in Dalmatia and how it affected the landscape, economy and population of the area in question. The research is based on a comparative analysis of various spatial data sources. Phylloxera spread through Dalmatia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the region belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Since agriculture, along with maritime activities and fishing, formed the heart of economic activities in Dalmatia, the crisis in viniculture caused by phylloxera had a particularly negative infl uence on social and economic circumstances. At the same time, changes occurred in the agrarian landscape, as many of the vineyards affected by phylloxera were never renewed ; some arable areas were reassigned to other cultures, while others were completely abandoned.

The main purpose of this paper was to analyse and describe vehicular queues created because of waiting time needed for vehicles to be boarded on ferries during the main tourist (summer) season in the Republic of Croatia. Since optimization of such large and high scale offer and demand system, including both road traffic and ferry infrastructure, could not have been tested in real time conditions, the main idea was to conduct analysis using computer based simulation model. Additionally, optimization of the overall system inelasticity has been conducted based on implementation of the Ferry Que Management System (FQMS). Simulation output analysis indicated the FQMS implementation to be feasible for most of analysed ferry lines but at the same time, it clearly indicated that each ferry line requires individual approach for an optimal solution to be found. The simulation output analysis also provided a clear indication of optimization limitations defined by input values.

map ,geographic name ,Dalmatia ,Croatia ,Adriatic Sea - Abstract
Dalmatia forms part of the eastern Adriatic coast, and after two thousand years of historical-geographic development, is part of the state of Croatia. The many changes in the historical region’s spatial range and affiliation to various states can be followed on old cartographic depictions, among other things. Given the function of a geographic name, which is to provide the shortest possible linguistic description, optimally replacing in linguistic communication and spatial orientation a (long) description, and given the signifi cance of maps as media for communicating in space and about space, it is possible to confi rm a refl ection of political-geographic shifts in the use of the geographic name Dalmatia by consulting old maps. From a comparative analysis of maps which emerged in different European cultural centres, applying the diachronic approach, it can clearly be seen that during the early modern period, the greatest influence on the depiction of Dalmatia on maps was exerted by a) reminiscences of the classical constitutional law tradition, b) political ambitions and the actual socio-economic influence of Venice on the eastern Adriatic coast, and c) the triple confrontation between the Habsburg Monarchy, the Ottoman Empire and the Venetian Republic in the Adriatic-Dinaric-Danube Basin contact area.

Cilj istraživanja jest prikazati kvalitetu životnog prostora grada Požege pomoću objektivnih i subjektivnih pokazatelja.

The paper discusses the artificial peninsulas and pseudo-islands of Croatia, i.e. technically bridged islands, which are linked to the neighbouring mainland or a larger island by means of a dike, bridge or both dike and bridge. Whereas artificial peninsulas are entirely incorporated into the mainland by means of dikes, pseudo-islands are connected to the mainland via bridges, thus losing some of their insular characteristics, particularly in terms of their functional link to the mainland. Croatian bridged islands played a vital role in the past as in times of war they represented refuges or places of permanent settlement. Nowadays, in times of marked littoralisation, these islands have experienced a dramatic change in function and physical appearance, mostly due to their transport connections with the mainland, which has naturally resulted in their inclusion in the tourist valorisation of natural and cultural heritage. On the one hand, this has contributed to the slowing down of the depopulation process, which is a basic social characteristic of most Croatian islands, but on the other hand, it has led to the spontaneous, uncoordinated, excessive building of apartments and other constructions which in size and shape have ruined the authentic cultural appearance of the islands.

Frane i u privatnim zbirkama.

Mercator ,cartography ,Croatia ,toponym - Abstract
Mercator depicted Croatia on several general maps. In accordance with the level of geographical knowledge, map scales and technical possibilities of the time, Mercator provided a relatively detailed depiction of basic geographical features on these maps. His interest in mapping Croatia was probably motivated by the fact that the Venetian Republic, the Habsburg Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire had fought over this area in the sixteenth century, contributing to the fragmentation of the medieval Croatian State, while at the same time facilitating economic, religious, linguistic, artistic and scientific communication between Central, South East and Mediterranean Europe. Mercator paid special attention to toponyms that enabled geographical objects to be identified and the decoding of cartographic contents. Research into Mercator's maps has shown that geographical names, among other things, clearly indicate the sources of spatial data that he used. Additionally, geographical names on Mercator's maps are significant indicators of the linguistic and cultural contacts that were particularly prominent in border areas, for example along the eastern Adriatic coast, or the courses of the Danube, Sava and Drava.

prostorna identifikacija ,historijsko-geografska regija ,horonim ,vernakularna regija ,Dalmacija ,Hrvatska - Abstract

Adriatic Sea ,Croatian Islands ,fortifications ,geostrategy - Abstract
Adriatic Sea has had a major geostrategic role on the contact between continental and Mediterranean Europe since the antiquity. Its position and physical features like profound indentedness of the sea into the mainland, well-indented coastline, and numerous islands and islets were crucial factors that attracted maritime forces and caused their mutual rivalry over that part of Europe. Many larger or smaller fortresses, forts, towers, keeps and walls scattered from the Brijuni Islands in the north-west to the Elafiti Islands in the south-east indicate strategic valorization of Croatian Islands during past. The importance of certain strategic points of Croatian archipelago is emphasized by their presence on the maps of different provenances. It should be pointed out that the island forts, except the military function, have also had a markings role, i. e. they were enabling the safer navigation through Adriatic. Until the 19th century, the majority of real and potential military threats that islands were confronting, had been coming from the mainland, and afterwards from the sea. In other words, with the fall of Venetian Republic and the consolidation of Habsburg Monarchy in the Adriatic, the settled and centuries-long geostrategic regularities of this space changed. Islands, that were out of the reach of war operations for a long time, came to the center of geostrategic attention due to external policy of European powers. This was particularly realized during and just after the Second World War. Contemporary military and geographical features of Croatian islands are determined foremost with the creation of independent Republic of Croatia in 1991 as well as it's accession to NATO in 2009.

The specific theoretical approach used in researching the region is a traditional or historical-geographical region i.e. an entity existing in the collective awareness of people (vernacular). It was established upon the collective awareness of common history, territory and origin, whereas the main uniting element is the region's geographical name (horonym). Considering frequent historical and political- geographical changes all over Croatia, Croatian territory has been divided into several large historical regions that were developing in different European states (Dalmatia, Slavonia, Istria). In traditional and social geographical circumstances the area of South Croatia has been perceived as the region of Dalmatia. However, the last political-geographical spatial unit that de jure existed and carried the name of Dalmatia is the homonymous Kingdom during the so-called second Austrian Government. Since 1918 there is no longer administrative and territorial region that carries the name. Although the horonym Dalmatia stopped existing de jure, there is still a perception of Dalmatian territory which still exists within certain exceptions, mostly in the frames of the former territorial region called Austrian Dalmatia. That perceptive region mostly corresponds with the contemporary Croatian territorial county organization, according to which (the already mentioned area) is divided into 4 smaller regions. However, territorially, these do not match completely with the former Kingdom of Dalmatia. Furthermore, the area of the South Croatia according to the contemporary economic views doesn't have territorial integrality but it is under the huge influence of a certain towns such as Split and Zadar and less by Sibenik and Dubrovnik. The region includes the connection between the certain area and community which is a bearer of a collective identification, the aim of this work is to analyze territorial identification of the population of South Croatia. The survey includes population on the former Austrian Dalmatia territory especially to point out the bordering areas that nowadays partly belong to neighboring country Montenegro and also the area which includes, according to the county organization of the Republic of Croatia, territorial parts of the other regions (particulary Lika).

Cartographic collection of the State Archives in Zadar includes several separate funds of geographic maps, navigational charts, cadastral plans and individual cartographic presentations in other archival funds, which makes it one of the richest collections in Croatia. It consists of maps that encompass many periods in the history of cartography, from Middle Ages to present day. Those maps are a valuable source for geographic and historical research related to eastern Adriatic coast and complex historical and geographic changes. On the basis of those maps it is possible to reconstruct the development of cartographic techniques that subsequently enabled more reliable insight into different spatial data. Therefore, it is extremely important to digitalize that rich cartographic heritage in order to make it more accessible and usable, and to save the originals from overuse and possible damages. Unfortunately, so far, systematic digitalization of several hundred old maps has not been made, primarily due to organizational and financial issues. However, for the purpose of setting up the exhibitions Cartography of Zadar and Maritime Cartography organized by Croatian Cartographic Society about fifty old maps were scanned digitally, which was a good foundation for future digitalization. Additionally, partial digitalization was made by using digital cameras, mostly as a part of scientific researches done by several geographers and historians. However, that digitalization was not made by using a unique methodology, so the quality of digital records was not the same, and the possibilities for their use were different. Therefore, it is extremely necessary to conduct a systematic catalogization of the whole cartographic heritage of the State Archives in Zadar, and after that systematic digitalization should be made by using a unique methodology, which includes using the same digitalization technology and unique resolution of digital records. Digitalization should be the result of cooperation between experts from different scientific disciplines, primarily cartography, and then geography and archival science.

map ,cartography ,cartographic heritage ,Zadar ,Croatia - Abstract
In Zadar, one of the oldest and most important cultural and scientific centers in the Republic of Croatia there are numerous institutions which, among else also preserve valuable cartographic heritage. Since for centuries this city had been the administrative centre of Dalmatia, that is the whole South Croatia, which generated various needs of regional administration entities, courts, army, shipping companies, Church, schools and others, a part of important cartographic resources is preserved in Zadar. Due to the efforts of civilian and church authorities and more prominent individuals, it originated mostly from European cartographic centers, but some of the maps were also made in Zadar. The biggest number of old maps, atlases and globes are preserved in the Zadar State Archive and in the Research Library Zadar. Part of the cartographic materials is also preserved in the Archbishopric Library, in the Monastery of St. Francis but also in other monastery collections in Zadar and in Zadar region. Cartographic heritage encompasses cartographic representations of several hundreds units dating back from the 16th century. Most of the cartographic representations show Zadar, certain parts of Dalmatia, the whole Croatian coast and the Adriatic, and there are also comprehensive cartographic works representing the entire – at the moment of their creation known – world (Molleti's edition of Ptolemy's Geography, Coronelli's Atlases, Sanson's Atlases, Homann's and Seutter's atlases and others). Some editions are rare even in the European context, for instance Bordon's isolario, atlas of sea charts Carta di cabottagio del Mare Adriatico and others. Since the cartographic heritage preserved in Zadar is an inevitable source for research of experts from various scientific disciplines (geography, cartography, history, art history, toponymy and others) dealing with the examination of the Croatian Adriatic region, it is of extreme importance to systemize cartographic heritage and enable accessibility of quality digital records. From the technical standpoint, research is facilitated to users, and from the archival standpoint, fragile resources are preserved from wear and tear and various forms of damages.

Državni arhiv u Zadaru ,katastar ,Grimanijeve mape ,Böttner ,obavijesna pomagala ,State Archive in Zadar ,cadastre ,Grimani Maps ,finding aids - Abstract
U Dodatku B objavljujemo prvi put cjelokupni sadržaj svih brojeva Tabulariuma. Nadalje, predlaže se daljnje istraživanje i digitaliziranje kako karata tako i obavijesnih pomagala radi čuvanja izvornika i lakše dostupnosti podatcima., The paper briefly describes the development of cadastre in Dalmatia, with a special emphasis on the 18th century and the period of Governor Francesco Grimani’s rule. His Provision on Land Restructuring in Dalmatia from 1756 was appropriately named after him, the Grimani Law, just like the cadastre of this period was named the Grimani Cadastre and the integral cadastral plans the Grimani Maps. However, as time went by, the title Grimani Maps started being used for some 17th and 18th century cadastral plans, which did not originate from Francesco Grimani’s reform. Therefore, authors describe available archival finding aids from the State Archive in Zadar which may help in analysing cartographic material known as the Grimani Maps. The oldest finding aid is Böttner’s handwritten inventory, which provides systematization for 800 maps, plans and drawings kept in the Archive. It has been paid special attention in this paper, even though it does not specifically mention the Grimani maps. However, it should be taken into consideration since it is still in use, despite being the oldest one. Appendix A contains basic information about E. Böttner’s life and work. Afterwards, the Tabularium journal, which was published in the period 1901–1904 is analysed in detail. A review of archival material from the Zadar State Archive was published in its first issue. The material is associated with the present Grimani Maps Collection and paid considerable attention in this paper. It represents the first printed summarised inventory of the Zadar Archive. The entire content of all Tabularium issues is presented in Appendix B for the first time. A description of internal inventory of the State Archive in Zadar follows and for the first time it presents a collection of cadastral maps titled Grimani Maps. The description is followed by an analysis of a Review of Archival Funds and Collections of the Republic of Croatia from 2006, as well as the latest network information system, ARHiNET. Based on comparing the aforementioned finding aids, certain conclusions are drawn which should be helpful to future researchers. A provisional distinction of the Grimani Maps in broader as well as in narrower sense is suggested until a better title for the collection is found. Furthermore, future research, as well as digitalisation of maps and finding aids is advised in order to preserve the original and facilitate data access.

gradski prostor ,hodonimi ,Zadar ,razine prostornih identiteta - Abstract

This paper discusses former burial rites which resulted in memorials known asmirila. It deals with the custom of marking a temporary resting-place while transporting a deceased person, which was prevalent in the north-eastern Adriatic hinterland, manifested in the erection of mortarless stone structures, the remains of which can still be found in the landscape. The paper considers the material and symbolic components of the cultural landscape through the phenomenon ofmirilain the central parts of the Croatian Adriatic hinterland: Ravni Kotari and Bukovica. At the same time, given the complexity of natural and socio-political factors, an attempt is made to establish how the custom arose in the spatial and historical context of the region. Dalmatia forms part of the eastern Adriatic coast, and after two thousand years of historical-geographic development, is part of the state of Croatia. The many changes in the historical region's spatial range and affiliation to various states can be followed on old cartographic depictions, among other things. Given the function of a geographic name, which is to provide the shortest possible linguistic description, optimally replacing in linguistic communication and spatial orientation a (long) description, and given the significance of maps as media for communicating in space and about space, it is possible to confirm a reflection of political-geographic shifts in the use of the geographic name Dalmatia by consulting old maps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this paper is to present and analyze a small part of geodetic and cartographic heritage from the period of Venetian administration in Dalmatia which has been kept and preserved at the State Archive in Zadar. Due to the establishment of cadastral service for the purposes of Venetian administration, land surveyors worked in the field. The subject of this research are letters from the State Archive in Zadar, written by land surveyors in field and addressed to General Regent. The research contains 674 letters dealing with the issue of cadastral survey throughout the 18th century. Importance and complexity of these letters rest upon the fact that surveys refer mostly to the border area between Venetian and Turkish properties in Dalmatia, an area where the border was often submitted to changes. Every new acquisition of the Venetian administration brought inevitable changes to the land area. Since some of the letters contain maps of specific areas, they also represent a valuable contribution to cartography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
