Abstract

Various test patterns are used to analyze the stress migration (SM) behavior in narrow copper (Cu) damascene interconnects, connecting in narrow or wide lines. The results of the analysis shows that the SM phenomenon in such lines is highly affected by the placing of the vias at the edge of the M1 line, which is then used to explain the effect of the via arrangement close to the edge of the lower lines on the SM failure in the interconnects.

Abstract

A novel optical distance meter with a pulsed yttrium aluminum garnet laser and a pair of streak cameras is developed. To minimize timing errors, the time scale is marked by an optical-registration-clock pulse. This assures an intrinsic resolution of 3 mm. For field applications, comparison of multiwave-length and single-wavelength methods confirms that the latter method is much better if carefully corrected. By use of the equipotential temperature criterion for correction of the atmospheric parameters, such as the atmospheric boundary layer effect and the temperature along the ray trajectory, a resolution of better than 1 cm is achieved over a range of 30 km. This result corresponds to a relative resolution of 3 X 10 to the -7. Typical ranging results in a geophysical application are shown for monitoring of the relative translational shift of the Asian (Eurasian) and the Philippine plates; the predicted shift is found to be absent.

38. A geodetic laser radar rangefinder with 10(exp -7) resolution

Abstract

A novel geodetic laser radar rangefinder (GLRR) unit utilizing a pair of synchronized 10-psec streak camera systems was developed for displacement measurements of the earth's plates. In order to achieve minimum computing error and assure extremely high spatial resolution, an optical pulse registration clock was developed and used to register a fiducial mark on the time scale of the system. Conventional optical rangefinders have been limited to a relative resolution of 10(exp -6) even for short distances. The system to be reported on today has the capability of measuring a 50km range with an accuracy of 4mm corresponding to a relative resolution of 10(exp -7). With a gain of greater than 3 x 10(exp 3), the system has the capability of detecting extremely weak signals on the order of photon counting. This combined with temporal gating makes daytime measurements comparable in signal-to-noise ratio to nighttime viewing. This is useful for measuring faint signals returning over a range of several tens of kilometers. The present ranging system was designed to observe the mutual displacement of geodetic plates and was employed to measure the boundary between the Philippine and Asian geodetic plates that pass beneath the Suruga Bay near Hamamatsu City, Japan. The system has been in operation for over 3 years. In addition, the system has the ability of producing and detecting optical ranging pulses of several wavelengths simultaneously, making this a complete multicolor system. The basic GLRR system consists of a frequency stabilizing crystal, optical clock, YAG laser, KDP doubling crystal, DK*P tripling crystal, two matched streak cameras (A and B), a control computer, and an output/input periscope system.

Abstract

Excessive B cell function including autoantibody production is a common feature of SLE and considered to be intimately associated with spontaneous lymphokine secretion by themselves. To clarify roles of IL-6/IL-6 receptor autocrine activation pathway in autoantibody production observed in patients with SLE, we studied expression and function of IL-6 receptors in comparison with those of IL-2 receptors, Tac on SLE B cells. IL-6 receptors and IL-2 receptors have been detected on B cells in the blood without any in vitro stimuli in most patients with SLE. The introduction of anti-IL-6 receptor antibody, which inhibits binding to the receptors of IL-6, and anti-IL-2 receptor antibody, anti-Tac to the cultures of SLE B cells resulted in potent inhibition of spontaneous production of polyclonal Ig and anti-DNA autoantibodies. In addition, fresh SLE B cells secreted high levels of IL-6 without any in vitro stimuli. These results indicate that constitutive expression of IL-6 receptors on B cells in conjunction with spontaneous IL-6 production by B cells induces autocrine B cell activation, which may lead to B cell hyperactivity and autoantibody secretion in SLE patients. Dysregulation of B cell activity observed in patients with SLE could thus be, at least in part, independent of T cell help.

Abstract

Elastin-like peptides (ELPs) sequences are repeats of the pentapeptide GVGVP, and they have the ability to coaggregate reversibly, depending on the temperature. By exploiting this characteristic, a novel extracellular matrix protein (ECM) containing ELP was developed genetically to harvest a cell sheet from a culture dish. One of the ELP constructs, G288, consisted of 288 repeats of the sequence GVGVGP (G); it was attached to a hydrophobic dish surface. Next, cells with the sequence His-G36RG36, which has a His tag and an RGD sequence (R) that promotes attachment of the cell between the G36 sequences, consisted of 36 repeats of the sequence GVGVP, were added to the dish. After these cells became confluent, the temperature was changed to 20 degrees C in order to reverse the coaggregation. At this temperature, cells could be detached from the dish as a cell sheet. This genetically engineering method for construction of thermoresponsive ECM would be suitable to modify ECM with further functional domains.
