Study region: South Korea Study focus: To overcome the limitations of relying solely on ground precipitation gauges, this study utilizes radar precipitation data to investigate the temporal scaling behavior of extreme rainfall values. Maximum precipitation and extreme quantile values for each grid point were calculated using the rolling-window summation method. The investigation focuses on the relationship between maximum precipitation and duration. New hydrological insights for the region: The study's findings are as follows: (1) Radar estimates higher maximum precipitation values than ground gauges, especially in mountainous areas with sparse gauge coverage; (2) The maximum precipitation-duration relationship deviates from a power-law relationship primarily due to unusual short-duration extreme rainfall events; (3) Lower-quantile high rainfall values show a stronger power-law relationship influenced by various rainfall mechanisms; (4) The East Asian rainy season induces greater extreme rainfall for durations up to 6 h, while longer durations are dominated by typhoons, indicating different flood risks; (5) Maximum precipitation values for most durations are observed on Jeju Island, primarily caused by typhoon events. Considering that climate change is expected to induce a northward shift in typhoon paths, appropriate flood defense measures should be implemented, especially in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. These findings highlight how different observation methods can significantly impact flood risk assessment and the design of key hydraulic structures.

Introduction Due to global warming, accurately estimating evaporation has become a key challenge in water resource management, and due to the important role it plays in the withdrawal of water from human reach, it has always attracted the attention of researchers. Therefore, modeling and awareness of the value of evaporation as one of the hydrological variables is of great importance in agricultural research and soil and water conservation. Gorgan was chosen for the study due to its proximity to the Caspian Sea with a humid climate and a higher rate of evaporation than other cities. On the other hand, Shiraz has a hot and dry climate, is located in central Iran far from water resources such as the sea, and has a lower evaporation rate. Kish also has a warm and humid climate due to its proximity to the sea, with a lower evaporation rate than Shiraz but higher than Gorgan. Several meteorological variables affect the process of evaporation and transpiration, and due to the complexity of the evaporation parameter, a method with high accuracy should be used to determine them. Recently, artificial neural network methods have become very popular among researchers due to their common use and the ease with which they can solve complex problems. Therefore, many intelligent algorithms have been suggested to find the best solution for complex engineering problems, as they can find optimal answers faster and more accurately. Materials and Methods Artificial neural networks are designed based on inspiration from the memory and learning mechanisms in the human brain. To train artificial neural networks, a set of valid input and output data is used based on the type of problem. The accuracy of the network output depends on the amount of training data and how the inputs and their features are processed. To design different scenarios for adjusting input data, the correlation values of the data with evaporation were used. In this study, three synoptic stations with different climates, including Gorgan, Shiraz, and Kish, were chosen. Three stations with different climates were used to better evaluate and repeat the steps of the method so that the efficiency of the method could be more accurately assessed. Considering the importance of the value of evaporation in nature, evaporation modeling with the ANN and its combination with the COOT algorithm, which mimics the natural life of a COOT bird, was performed using five meteorological parameters, including the minimum air temperature, maximum air temperature, wind speed, average relative humidity, and sunshine hours on a monthly between 2000 and 2022. The dataset was divided into two phases: training (70 % of the dataset) and testing (30% of the dataset). To evaluate the performance of developed models, statistical indices of these models such as correlation coefficient (R), root-mean-square error (RMSE), Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NS), and their graphical representations were compared with each other. Results and Discussion As mentioned, four models of ANN-COOT with varying input parameters were developed and compared to four conventional ANN models. Statistical performances were calculated, and comparison plots were made in the training and testing phases to find the most adequate model for the prediction of evaporation. Comparing of obtained results from statistical indices for the testing phase revealed that the COOT-ANN4 model had the best performance for Gorgan with the R, RMSE, and NS equal to 0.99, 8.19, and 0.99 respectively. Shiraz also obtained values of the R, RMSE, and NS equal to 0.99, 18.43, and 0.98 respectively. Similarly, for Kish, the values of the R, RMSE, and NS equal to 0.97, 19.36, and 0.93 respectively, have better performance than the other models. Compared with the results of different input combinations, the hybrid ANN-COOT model (ANN-COOT4) at three stations was found superior with input combinations of Tmin, Tmax, SSH, RH, and WS. Additionally, to evaluate the accuracy of developed models, Scatter plots, Violin plots, Relative error percent plots (RE %), Taylor diagrams, and Histograms were drawn. By comparing the graphical representations, it can be determined that the hybrid COOT with ANN4, namely the COOT-ANN4 model, has improved the artificial neural network at Gorgan, Shiraz, and Kish stations. Conclusion The algorithm of COOT is an optimization algorithm that is generally used to solve optimization problems. As observed from the overall performance of the results of the hybrid model in predicting evaporation, the objective function was minimized. The results indicated that scenario four of the COOT-ANN4 hybrid model with input parameters of minimum temperature, maximum temperature, sunshine hours, relative humidity, and wind speed has better accuracy and performance at all three stations. In general, the findings of this study revealed that the COOT algorithm can improve the artificial neural network (ANN) structure in any climate and provide a hybrid model with higher accuracy and less error for modeling the evaporation parameter. Considering that the COOT algorithm is powerful and efficient, it is better to use it in various fields to improve the performance and accuracy of models. The testing results revealed that the lowest Root Mean Square Error RMSE (18.43, 19.36 and 8.19) and highest coefficient of correlation R (0.99, 0.97, and 0.99), and the highest Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency Coefficient (N-S) (0.98, 0.93 and 0.99) attained by the ANN-COOT4 hybrid model (relative to other ANN and ANN-COOT models) tested for three selected stations in Shiraz, Kish and Gorgan sites. Concerning the predictive efficiency, the developed ANN-COOT hybrid model, improved the modeling performance at extreme points, which outperforms the ANN model, indicating its capability in the prediction of monthly evaporation.

Abstract Suspended sediment concentration prediction is critical for the design of reservoirs, dams, rivers ecosystems, various operations of aquatic resource structure, environmental safety, and water management. In this study, two different machine models, namely the cascade correlation neural network (CCNN) and feedforward neural network (FFNN) were applied to predict daily-suspended sediment concentration (SSC) at Simga and Jondhara stations in Sheonath basin, India. Daily-suspended sediment concentration and discharge data from 2010 to 2015 were collected and used to develop the model to predict suspended sediment concentration. The developed models were evaluated using statistical indices like Nash and Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NES), root mean square error (RMSE), Willmott’s index of agreement (WI), and Legates–McCabe’s index (LM), supplemented by a scatter plot, density plots, histograms and Taylor diagram for graphical representation. The developed model was evaluated and compared with CCNN and FFNN. Nine input combinations were explored using different lag-times for discharge (Qt-n) and suspended sediment concentration (St-n) as input variables, with the current suspended sediment concentration as the desired output, to develop CCNN and FFNN models. The CCNN4 model with 4 lagged inputs (St-1, St-2, St-3, St-4) outperformed the other developed models with the lowest RMSE = 95.02 mg/l and the highest NES = 0.0.662, WI = 0.890 and LM = 0.668 for the Jondhara Station while the same CCNN4 model secure as the best with the lowest RMSE = 53.71 mg/l and the highest NES = 0.785, WI = 0.936 and LM = 0.788 for the Simga Station. The result shows the CCNN model was better than the FFNN model for predicting daily-suspended sediment at both stations in the Sheonath basin, India. Overall, CCNN showed better forecasting potential for suspended sediment concentration compared to FFNN at both stations, demonstrating their applicability for hydrological forecasting with complex relationships.

Abstract Soil temperature is a key meteorological parameter that plays an important role in determining rates of physical, chemical and biological reactions in the soil. Ground temperature can vary substantially under different land cover types and climatic conditions. Proper prediction of soil temperature is thus essential for the accurate simulation of land surface processes. In this study, two intelligent neural models—artificial neural networks (ANNs) and Sperm Swarm Optimization (SSO) were used for estimating of soil temperatures at four depths (5, 10, 20, 50 cm) using seven-year meteorological data acquired from Archbold Biological Station in South Florida. The results of this study in subtropical grazinglands of Florida showed that the integrated artificial neural network and SSO models (MLP-SSO) were more accurate tools than the original structure of artificial neural network methods for soil temperature forecasting. In conclusion, this study recommends the hybrid MLP-SSO model as a suitable tool for soil temperature prediction at different soil depths.

Abstract Rainfall is crucial for the development and management of water resources. Six hybrid soft computing models, including multilayer perceptron (MLP)–Henry gas solubility optimization (HGSO), MLP–bat algorithm (MLP–BA), MLP–particle swarm optimization (MLP–PSO), radial basis neural network function (RBFNN)–HGSO, RBFNN–PSO, and RBFGNN–BA, were used in this study to forecast monthly rainfall at two stations in Malaysia (Sara and Banding). Different statistical measures (mean absolute error (MAE) and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and percentage of BIAS (PBIAS)) and a Taylor diagram were used to assess the models’ performance. The results indicated that the MLP–HGSO performed better than the other models in forecasting rainfall at both stations. In addition, transition matrices were computed for each station and year based on the conditional probability of rainfall or absence of rainfall on a given month. The values of MAE for testing processes for the MLP–HGSO, MLP–PSO, MLP–BA, RBFNN–HGSO, RBFNN–BA, and RBFNN–PSO at the first station were 0.712, 0.755, 0.765, 0.717, 0.865, and 0.891, while the corresponding NSE and PBIAS values were 0.90–0.23, 0.83–0.29, 0.85–0.25, 0.87–0.27, 0.81–0.31, and 0.80–0.35, respectively. For the second station, the values of MAE were found 0.711, 0.743, 0.742, 0.719, 0.863 and 0.890 for the MLP–HGSO, MLP–PSO, MLP–BA, RBFNN–HGSO, RBFNN–BA, and RBFNN–PSO during testing processes and the corresponding NSE–PBIAS values were 0.92–0.22, 0.85–0.28, 0.89–0.26, 0.91–0.25, 0.83–0.31, 0.82–0.32, respectively. Based on the outputs of the MLP–HGSO, the highest rainfall was recorded in 2012 with a probability of 0.72, while the lowest rainfall was recorded in 2006 with a probability of 0.52 at the Sara Station. In addition, the results indicated that the MLP–HGSO performed better than the other models within the Banding Station. According to the findings, the hybrid MLP–HGSO was selected as an effective rainfall prediction model.

A numerical model is developed in this study using the finite element method (FEM) to estimate relative total uplift force for different positions of holes of drainage gallery in the foundation of Guangzhao gravity dam, located in China. The data of the relative total uplift force generated for different input combinations using the FEM were used to develop machine learning (ML) models. A three-layer Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and a new hybrid model known as ANN-Whale Optimization Algorithm (ANN-WOA) were used for this purpose. The results showed that R2, RMSE, NSE, KGE and RE% for ANN-WOA model in estimation of the relative total uplift forces were 0.998, 0.021, 0.989, 0.964 and 3.3% respectively and those for ANN model were 0.980, 0.023, 0.982, 0.953 and 4.67% respectively, which indicate the higher accuracy of ANN-WOA model compared to ANN model. The new hybrid model, ANN-WOA with the less RMSE and RE% and high KGE and NSE is a more appropriate model for the estimation of the relative total uplift force. The extracted metrics of violin plots indicated that the probability distribution of the relative total uplift force estimated using ANN-WOA model was very similar to that obtained using the FEM.

Drought is one of the most important problems that humanity is facing today with effects intensifying and causing many problems in different regions due to climate change and the gradual increase in global warming in recent years. Knowing this phenomenon and managing it correctly can reduce the damage caused by it to some extent. In this study, in order to quantify the rainfall changes in the region from the rainfall data of Bukan, Saqez and Takab stations and based on the Standardized Precipitation Meteorological Drought Index (SPI) in the basic statistical period (1959-2020) and the future period (2020-2100). The CanESM2 model was used under RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The results of the survey in the basic statistical period showed that the change trend of SPI values is decreasing. Also, the average decrease of monthly rainfall in the future statistical period under the RCP8.5 scenario in Takab, Bukan and Saqez stations is about 18, 18 and 23%, respectively, and the change trend of the SPI index under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios is a significant decrease. And in the RCP2.6 scenario, it has an insignificant decrease. Obviously, with the current results and the lack of greenhouse gas management, more severe droughts will occur in the study area.

Determining the actual evapotranspiration value and analyzing its temporal trend is essential for optimal water resources management in a basin. In the present paper, the actual evapotranspiration time series is simulated and its trend is analyzed according to the trend of climatic variables and land use in the Ajichi basin during the period of 2015-1987. The comprehensive SWAT model was set up, calibrated, and validated for the Ajichi basin. Also, the average of simulated actual evapotranspiration of crops (in wet years) was compared with similar values in the National Water Document. The results of the Mann-Kendall trend test showed that the annual rainfall in most meteorological stations had a decreasing trend and the rainfall trend in the ten stations decreased significantly. While the annual maximum temperature at all stations and the annual minimum temperature in most of them have significantly increased. Investigation of land use maps illustrated that the irrigated land area of the basin has increased by a 39% during the study period. According the study's results, the potential evapotranspiration of the basin has had a significant increasing trend with a rate of 2.54 mm per year. The results indicated that despite the increasing trend of potential evapotranspiration and irrigated land area, the actual evapotranspiration of the basin had a significant decreasing trend with a rate of 2.2 mm per year due to the decrease in rainfall.

Abstract Precipitation and temperature are the most important climate parameters, which vary both spatially and temporally. In the present study, rainfall data of 11 synoptic stations and 40 rain gauge stations and mean air temperature data of 11 synoptic stations of Ardabil province for the period 2009–2019 collected from the Meteorological Organization of Ardabil province, were considered for investigation. The descriptive statistics of rainfall and temperature such as mean, median, coefficient of variation, skewness and kurtosis were analyzed for monthly scale data. A higher coefficient of variation signified a greater degree of variation in precipitation and temperature data across different months. To evaluate the temporal stability over several months, Pearson linear correlation analysis at a significance level of 5% was performed for each variable. Kriging geostatistical estimator and GIS interface (ArcMap 10.4.1) were used for spatial interpolation with the aid of root mean square and SRMS standards. The results revealed that the spatial variation of temperature was greater than that of precipitation.

This research aims to model soil temperature (ST) using machine learning models of multilayer perceptron (MLP) algorithm and support vector machine (SVM) in hybrid form with the Firefly optimization algorithm, i.e. MLP-FFA and SVM-FFA. In the current study, measured ST and meteorological parameters of Tabriz and Ahar weather stations in a period of 2013–2015 are used for training and testing of the studied models with one and two days as a delay. To ascertain conclusive results for validation of the proposed hybrid models, the error metrics are benchmarked in an independent testing period. Moreover, Taylor diagrams utilized for that purpose. Obtained results showed that, in a case of one day delay, except in predicting ST at 5 cm below the soil surface (ST5cm) at Tabriz station, MLP-FFA produced superior results compared with MLP, SVM, and SVM-FFA models. However, for two days delay, MLP-FFA indicated increased accuracy in predicting ST5cm and ST 20cm of Tabriz station and ST10cm of Ahar station in comparison with SVM-FFA. Additionally, for all of the prescribed models, the performance of the MLP-FFA and SVM-FFA hybrid models in the testing phase was found to be meaningfully superior to the classical MLP and SVM models.

The potential of several predictive models including multiple model-artificial neural network (MM-ANN), multivariate adaptive regression spline (MARS), support vector machine (SVM), multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP), and ‘M5Tree’ were assessed to simulate the pan evaporation in monthly scale (EPm) at two stations (e.g. Ranichauri and Pantnagar) in India. Monthly climatological information were used for simulating the pan evaporation. The utmost effective input-variables for the MM-ANN, MGGP, MARS, SVM, and M5Tree were determined using the Gamma test (GT). The predictive models were compared to each other using several statistical criteria (e.g. mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), Willmott's Index of agreement (WI), root mean squared error (RMSE), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and Legate and McCabe’s Index (LM)) and visual inspection. The results showed that the MM-ANN-1 and MGGP-1 models (NSE, WI, LM, RMSE, MAPE are 0.954, 0.988, 0.801, 0.536 mm/month, 9.988% at Pantnagar station, and 0.911, 0.975, 0.724, and 0.364 mm/month, 12.297% at Ranichauri station, respectively) with input variables equal to six were more successful than the other techniques during testing period to simulate the monthly pan evaporation at both Ranichauri and Pantnagar stations. Thus, the results of proposed MM-ANN-1 and MGGP-1 models will help to the local stakeholders in terms of water resources management.

The potential of the soil to hold plant nutrients is governed by the cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of any soil. Estimating soil CEC aids in conventional soil management practices to replenish the soil solution that supports plant growth. In this study, a multiple model integration scheme supervised with a hybrid genetic algorithm-neural network (MM-GANN) was developed and employed to predict the accuracy of soil CEC in Tabriz plain, an arid region of Iran. The standalone models (i.e., artificial neural network (ANN) and extreme learning machine (ELM)) were implemented for incorporation into the MM-GANN. In addition, it was tested to enhance the prediction accuracy of the standalone models. The soil parameters such as clay, silt, pH, carbonate calcium equivalent (CCE), and soil organic matter (OM) were used as model inputs to predict soil CEC. With the use of several evaluation criteria, the results showed that the MM-GANN model involving the predictions of ELM and ANN models calibrated by considering all the soil parameters (e.g., Clay, OM, pH, silt, and CCE) as inputs provided superior soil CEC estimates with a Nash Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) = 0.87, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) = 2.885, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) = 2.249, Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) = 12.072, and coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.884. The proposed MM-GANN model is a reliable intelligence-based approach for the assessment of soil quality parameters intended for sustainability and management prospects.

Rainfall is the main motivator in the hydrologic cycle of the basin and it is an element of meteorological phenomena undergoing severe changes in time and place. The suitability of density and distribution of rain gauges in the rain gauge networks of each area is an effective step in the success of the water plans, regional projecting and effective use of the information (Karamouz et al., 2010). Many researchers have shown that the geostatistical prediction method provides better estimates of the regional rainfall than the traditional methods. Tanaka and Putthividhya (2013) used the geostatistical method to assess the quality of the rainfall estimation in the Basin of Chao Phraya. They tried to calculate the difference between the rainfall data and the results obtained from the above methods by plotting Thiessen Network and the co-ordinate lines by nverse Distance Weighting and Ordinary Kriging methods. They also examined the correlation between the height, humidity and temperature with the recorded rainfall values. The findings showed that height had a significant correlation with Monsoon rainfall, while humidity and temperature correlated with the monthly rainfalls. Yang and He (2013), using the super innovative firefly algorithm concluded that this algorithm is more suitable than the optimal search strategy. Considering the problems of Urmia Lake located in the northwest of Iran, comprehensive studies with an inclusive approach to the problems in this basin are considered necessary. Indeed, it is necessary to concentrate more on the process used in the design of the rain gauge networks and begin to redesign the existing networks in order to refine and complete them.

Forecasting soil temperature at multiple depths is considered to be a core decision-making task for examining future changes in surface and sub-surface meteorological processes, land–atmosphere energy exchange, resilient agricultural systems for improved crop health and eco-environmental risk assessment. The aim of this paper is to estimate monthly soil temperature (ST) at multiple depth: 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 cm with a hybrid multi-layer perceptron algorithm integrated with the firefly optimizer algorithm (MLP-FFA). To develop the hybrid MLP-FFA model, the monthly ST and relevant meteorological variables for the city of Adana (Turkey) are collated for the period of 2000–2007. Construction of hybrid MLP-FFA model is drawn upon a limited set of predictors, denoted as soil depth, periodicity (or the respective month), air temperature, pressure and solar radiation, while the objective variable for MLP-FFA model is the forecasted ST at multiple depths. To the evaluate MLP-FFA, statistical metrics applied to test the model’s performance are: the root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) and mean bias error (MBE) where the sign of the difference is also considered. In conjunction with statistical metrics, a Taylor diagram is utilized to visualize the degree of similarity between the observed and forecasted soil moisture. In terms of the forecasted results, the hybrid MLP-FFA model is seen to outperform the standalone MLP model. The optimal MLP-FFA is attained for soil temperature forecasting at a depth of 20 cm (RMSE, MAPE of 0.546 °C, 2.40%) whereas the optimal MLP is attained for soil temperature forecasting at a depth of 50 cm (RMSE of 0.544 °C, 2.21%). Conclusively, the study advocates through statistical metrics attained the better utility of the hybrid MLP-FFA hybrid model. Given its superior performance, it is ascertained that the hybrid MLP model integrated with Firefly optimizer is a qualified ancillary tool that can be applied to generate precise soil temperature forecasts at multiple soil depths. Accurate prediction of the river flow is an important element in the management of surface water resources, dam reservoir operation, flood control and drought. Selecting appropriate inputs for intelligent models is vital to increase the accuracy and efficiency of the models. Since river flow prediction is of great importance in water resources, researchers have been exploring different approaches over the past several decades. Various methods have been devised to predict the flow of the river over the past years. In general, we can classify conceptual models and data-driven methods. Over the past four decades, time series models have been widely used in river flow prediction (Dawson et al., 2008). Intelligent systems are used to predict nonlinear phenomena. The Bayesian Network and the Artificial Neural Network are among these methods. Ahmadi et al. (2014) studied the comparison of performance of support vector machine and network methods in forecasting daily flow of the Barandozachay River. The results showed that, both methods are close to each other and are suitable for river flow simulation. But in mid-range forecasting and the minimum backup car model, it's much better than the business network model. Shannon entropy theory was first developed by Shannon and then widely used in various scientific issues. The purpose of this study is to use the Shannon Entropy Theory to find the best combination of input variables for artificial neural network and Bayesian network models to predict the flow. Therefore, for this purpose, the Sufi River of the studied area was selected.

Selecting a model that simulate the runoff with high accuracy and less error, can be helpful in favorable management of water resources plans and increasing the performance of these plans. Also, increasing the accuracy of runoff simulation in the basins with no meteorological data, is of great significance in efficient management of water resources in these basins.

Accurate simulation of evaporation plays an important role in the efficient management of water Resources. Generally, evaporation is measured using the direct method where Class A pan-evaporimeter is used, and an indirect method that includes empirical equations. However, despite its widespread usage, Class A pan-evaporimeter method can be affected by human and instrumentation errors. Empirical equations, on the other hand, are generally linked to the different climatic factors that should provide initial or boundary conditions in the mathematical equations that affect the rate of evaporation. Considering these challenging, heuristic soft computing approaches that do not need key information about the physics of evaporation. In this study, a Quantum-behaved Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, embedded into a multi-layer perceptron technique, is developed to estimate the evaporation rates over a daily forecast horizon. The measured evaporation data from 2012–2014 for Talesh meteorological station located in Northern Iran are employed. The predictive accuracy of the MLP-QPSO model is evaluated with existing methods: i.e. a hybrid MLP-PSO and a standalone MLP model. The results are evaluated in respect to statistical performance criterion: the mean absolute error, root mean square error (RMSE), Willmott's Index and the Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient. In conjunction with these metrics, Taylor diagrams are also utilized to assess the level of agreement between the forecasted and observed evaporation data. Evidently, the hybrid MLP-QPSO model is confirmed to be an optimal forecasting tool applied for estimating daily pan evaporation, outperforming both the hybrid MLP-PSO and the standalone model.In light of these results, the present study justifies the potential utility of the hybrid MLP-QPSO model to be applied for estimating daily evaporation rates in North of Iran.

A genetic-based neural network ensemble (GNNE) is applied for estimation of daily soil temperatures (DST) at distinct depths. A sequential genetic-based negative correlation learning algorithm (SGNCL) is adopted to train the GNNE parameters. CLMS algorithm is used to achieve the optimum weights of components. Recorded data for two different stations located in Iran are used for the development of the GNNE models. Furthermore, the GNNE predictions are compared with the existing machine-learning models. The results demonstrate that GNNE outperforms other methods for the prediction of DSTs.

Nowaday, the impact of global warming and climate change because of the increased effects of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has been observed in many natural systems. All the general circulation models of the atmosphere predict warmer future for the earth. Hydrological processes such as rainfall and river flows as one of the main sources of water supply basins could be affected in such circumstances. Due to the low spatial resolution or simplification of some micro-scale phenomena in atmospheric general circulation models, these models cannot be employed for accurate approximation of the climate of the considered area, therefore, their output must be down scaled to the meteorological station range. In this study, the data of HadCM3 general circulation model down scaling with the use of LARS-WG model under two scenarios A2 and A1B and Parameters of daily rainfall, minimum temperature and maximum temperature of the Sufi-Chi basin generated for three periods (2011-203, 2046-2065-, 2080-2099). To assess the effect of climate change on runoff is used from artificial neural networks and genetic programming of intelligent model. The results indicate that the rainfall will increase in 2011-2030 and will decrease in the further future. Also the maximum and minimum temperatures will gradual increase in three periods of future and the amount of runoff will decrease in future than current time.

Simulation of rainfall - runoff process is one of the most important tasks in water resources management and flood control studies. In this study, the rainfall – runoff process over Kakarza river located at Lorestan province, was simulated using the Bayesian neural network and the results were compared with the gene expression and support vector machine models. In this case, different combinations of monthly rainfall and runoff data in period of 1969-2013 were considered as the input data of the models. Four performance criteria namely, correlation coefficient, root mean square error, Nash-Sutcliff coefficient and bias were used to evaluate and compare the performance of the models. The results showed that the performance of the models were satisfactory. Results showed that, the Bayesian neural network model is more efficient than the other models in estimation of minimum, mean and peak of runoff .

A spillway is a structure used to regulate the discharge flowing from hydraulic structures such as a dam. It also helps to dissipate the excess energy of water through the still basins. Therefore, it has a significant effect on the safety of the dam. One of the most serious problems that may be happening below the spillway is bed scouring, which leads to soil erosion and spillway failure. This will happen due to the high flow velocity on the spillway. In this study, an alternative to the conventional methods was employed to predict scour depth (SD) downstream of the ski-jump spillway. A novel optimization algorithm, namely, Harris hawks optimization (HHO), was proposed to enhance the performance of an artificial neural network (ANN) to predict the SD. The performance of the new hybrid ANN-HHO model was compared with two hybrid models, namely, the particle swarm optimization with ANN (ANN-PSO) model and the genetic algorithm with ANN (ANN-GA) model to illustrate the efficiency of ANN-HHO. Additionally, the results of the three hybrid models were compared with the traditional ANN and the empirical Wu model (WM) through performance metrics, viz., mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), coefficient of correlation (CC), Willmott index (WI), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and through graphical interpretation (line, scatter, and box plots, and Taylor diagram). Results of the analysis revealed that the ANN-HHO model (MAE = 0.1760 m, RMSE = 0.2538 m) outperformed ANN-PSO (MAE = 0.2094 m, RMSE = 0.2891 m), ANN-GA (MAE = 0.2178 m, RMSE = 0.2981 m), ANN (MAE = 0.2494 m, RMSE = 0.3152 m) and WM (MAE = 0.1868 m, RMSE = 0.2701 m) models in the testing period. Besides, graphical inspection displays better accuracy of the ANN-HHO model than ANN-PSO, ANN-GA, ANN, and WM models for prediction of SD around the ski-jump spillway.

This study evaluates standalone and hybrid soft computing models for predicting dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration by utilizing different water quality parameters. In the first stage, two standalone soft computing models, including multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network and cascade correlation neural network (CCNN), were proposed for estimating the DO concentration in the St. Johns River, Florida, USA. The DO concentration and water quality parameters (e.g., chloride (Cl), nitrogen oxides (NOx), total dissolved solid (TDS), potential of hydrogen (pH), and water temperature (WT)) were used for developing the standalone models by defining six combinations of input parameters. Results were evaluated using five performance criteria metrics. Overall results revealed that the CCNN model with input combination III (CCNN-III) provided the most accurate predictions of DO concentration values (root mean square error (RMSE) = 1.261 mg/L, Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) = 0.736, Willmott’s index of agreement (WI) = 0.919, R2 = 0.801, and mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.989 mg/L) for the standalone model category. In the second stage, two decomposition approaches, including discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and variational mode decomposition (VMD), were employed to improve the accuracy of DO concentration using the MLP and CCNN models with input combination III (e.g., DWT-MLP-III, DWT-CCNN-III, VMD-MLP-III, and VMD-CCNN-III). From the results, the DWT-MLP-III and VMD-MLP-III models provided better accuracy than the standalone models (e.g., MLP-III and CCNN-III). Comparison of the best hybrid soft computing models showed that the VMD-MLP-III model with 4 intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and 10 quadratic penalty factor (VMD-MLP-III (K = 4 and α = 10)) model yielded slightly better performance than the DWT-MLP-III with Daubechies-6 (D6) and Symmlet-6 (S6) (DWT-MLP-III (D6 and S6)) models. Unfortunately, the DWT-CCNN-III and VMD-CCNN-III models did not improve the performance of the CCNN-III model. It was found that the CCNN-III model cannot be used to apply the hybrid soft computing modeling for prediction of the DO concentration. Graphical comparisons (e.g., Taylor diagram and violin plot) were also utilized to examine the similarity between the observed and predicted DO concentration values. The DWT-MLP-III and VMD-MLP-III models can be an alternative tool for accurate prediction of the DO concentration values.

Dew point temperature (DPT) is known to fluctuate in space and time regardless of the climatic zone considered. The accurate estimation of the DPT is highly significant for various applications of hydro and agro–climatological researches. The current research investigated the hybridization of a multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network with nature-inspired optimization algorithms (i.e., gravitational search (GSA) and firefly (FFA)) to model the DPT of two climatically contrasted (humid and semi-arid) regions in India. Daily time scale measured weather information, such as wet bulb temperature (WBT), vapor pressure (VP), relative humidity (RH), and dew point temperature, was used to build the proposed predictive models. The efficiencies of the proposed hybrid MLP networks (MLP–FFA and MLP–GSA) were authenticated against standard MLP tuned by a Levenberg–Marquardt back-propagation algorithm, extreme learning machine (ELM), and support vector machine (SVM) models. Statistical evaluation metrics such as Nash Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) were used to validate the model efficiency. The proposed hybrid MLP models exhibited excellent estimation accuracy. The hybridization of MLP with nature-inspired optimization algorithms boosted the estimation accuracy that is clearly owing to the tuning robustness. In general, the applied methodology showed very convincing results for both inspected climate zones.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) and genetic programming (GP) have recently been used for the estimation of hydraulic data. In this study, they were used as alternative tools to estimate the characteristics of hydraulic jumps, such as the free surface location and energy dissipation. The dimensionless hydraulic parameters, including jump depth, jump length, and energy dissipation, were determined as functions of the Froude number and the height and length of corrugations. The estimations of the ANN and GP models were found to be in good agreement with the measured data. The results of the ANN model were compared with those of the GP model, showing that the proposed ANN models are much more accurate than the GP models.

Introduction:Accumulated and compacted ear wax or cerumen can cause conductive hearing loss, discomfort and vertigo, and infection. This study investigates the effect of Carbamide peroxide (CP) compared with Phenol glycerin (PG) ear drops on cerumen.Materials and Methods:This experimental study investigated the effect of PG and CP ear drops on cerumen in ex vivo and in vivo phases. In the ex vivo phase cerumen degredation was scored following PG and CP treatments. In the in vivo phase, 29 patients with bilateral cerumen impaction were randomly entered the study. PG and CP were applied 3 times a day (each time 5 drops) for 4 days by patients. After treatments, the time of cerumen removal was measured.Results:Instant changes showing degredation of cerumen (grade 1) was evident when it was exposed to CP, on the other hand degredation changes (grade 1) in cerumen treated with PG was only evident after 20 min incubation at 37 oC, while grade 3 degredation was evident in cerumen treated with CP after the same time incubation. Although the time needed for removal of cerumen was lower in CP treatment (54.10±31.77) compared to PG treatment (67.10±35.54), the difference was not statistically significant.Conclusion:Based on the literature and our results, carbamide peroxide is suggested as a proper treatment for patients with EAC obstruction caused by cerumen compaction, because not only it is significantly effective in cerumen degredation, but also no side effects have been reported.
