A magnetic domain boundary on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator is predicted to host a chiral edge state, but direct demonstration is challenging. Here, we used a scanning superconducting quantum interference device to show that current in a magnetized EuS/Bi2Se3 heterostructure flows at the edge when the Fermi level is gate-tuned to the surface band gap. We further induced micron-scale magnetic structures on the heterostructure, and detected a chiral edge current at the magnetic domain boundary. The chirality of the current was determined by magnetization of the surrounding domain and its magnitude by the local chemical potential rather than the applied current. Such magnetic structures, provide a platform for detecting topological magnetoelectric effects and may enable progress in quantum information processing and spintronics.

We report the Meissner effect studies on an FeSe thin film grown on Nb doped SrTiO3 substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. Two-coil mutual inductance measurement clearly demonstrates the onset of diamagnetic screening at 65 K, which is consistent with the gap opening temperature determined by previous angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy results. The applied magnetic field causes a broadening of the superconducting transition near the onset temperature, which is the typical behavior for quasi-two-dimensional superconductors. Our results provide direct evidence that FeSe thin film grown on Nb doped SrTiO3 substrate has an onset TC ~ 65 K, which is the highest among all iron based superconductors discovered so far., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, updated reference list

Thin film magnetic heterostructures with competing interfacial coupling and Zeeman energy pro- vide a fertile ground to study phase transition between different equilibrium states as a function of external magnetic field and temperature. A rare-earth (RE) / transition metal (TM) ferro- magnetic multilayer is a classic example where the magnetic state is determined by a competition between the Zeeman energy and antiferromagnetic interfacial exchange coupling energy. Techno- logically, such structures offer the possibility to engineer the macroscopic magnetic response by tuning the microscopic interactions between the layers. We have performed an exhaustive study of a nickel/gadolinium system by using the element-specific measurement technique x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and determined the full magnetic state diagrams as a function of temperature and magnetic layer thickness. We explain our result based on a modified Stoner-Wohlfarth formal- ism and provide evidence of a thickness-dependent phase transition to a magnetic fan state which is critical in understanding magnetoresistance effects in RE/TM systems. The results provide im- portant insight for spintronics and superconducting spintronics where engineering tunable magnetic inhomogeneity is key for certain applications.

Scanning SQUID susceptometry images the local magnetization and susceptibility of a sample. By accurately modeling the SQUID signal we can determine the physical properties such as the penetration depth and permeability of superconducting samples. We calculate the scanning SQUID susceptometry signal for a superconducting slab of arbitrary thickness with isotropic London penetration depth, on a non-superconducting substrate, where both slab and substrate can have a paramagnetic response that is linear in the applied field. We derive analytical approximations to our general expression in a number of limits. Using our results, we fit experimental susceptibility data as a function of the sample-sensor spacing for three samples: 1) delta-doped SrTiO3, which has a predominantly diamagnetic response, 2) a thin film of LaNiO3, which has a predominantly paramagnetic response, and 3) a two-dimensional electron layer (2-DEL) at a SrTiO3/AlAlO3 interface, which exhibits both types of response. These formulas will allow the determination of the concentrations of paramagnetic spins and superconducting carriers from fits to scanning SQUID susceptibility measurements., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures

LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 are insulating, nonmagnetic oxides, yet the interface between them exhibits a two-dimensional electron system with high electron mobility,1 superconductivity at low temperatures,2-6 and electric-field-tuned metal-insulator and superconductorinsulator phase transitions.3,6-8 Bulk magnetization and magnetoresistance measurements also suggest some form of magnetism depending on preparation conditions5,9-11 and suggest a tendency towards nanoscale electronic phase separation.10 Here we use local imaging of the magnetization and magnetic susceptibility to directly observe a landscape of ferromagnetism, paramagnetism, and superconductivity. We find submicron patches of ferromagnetism in a uniform background of paramagnetism, with a nonuniform, weak diamagnetic superconducting susceptibility at low temperature. These results demonstrate the existence of nanoscale phase separation as suggested by theoretical predictions based on nearly degenerate interface sub-bands associated with the Ti orbitals.12,13 The magnitude and temperature dependence of the paramagnetic response suggests that the vast majority of the electrons at the interface are localized, and do not contribute to transport measurements.3,6,7 In addition to the implications for magnetism, the existence of a 2D superconductor at an interface with highly broken inversion symmetry and a ferromagnetic landscape in the background suggests the potential for exotic superconducting phenomena., Comment: Edited version to appear in Nature Physics

We use scanning SQUID microscopy to investigate the behavior of vortices in the presence of twin boundaries in the pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. We show that the vortices avoid pinning on twin boundaries. Individual vortices move in a preferential way when manipulated with the SQUID: they tend to not cross a twin boundary, but rather to move parallel to it. This behavior can be explained by the observation of enhanced superfluid density on twin boundaries in Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. The observed repulsion from twin boundaries may be a mechanism for enhanced critical currents observed in twinned samples in pnictides and other superconductors.

We calculate the change in susceptibility resulting from a thin sheet with reduced penetration depth embedded perpendicular to the surface of an isotropic superconductor, in a geometry applicable to scanning Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) microscopy, by numerically solving Maxwell's and London's equations using the finite element method. The predicted stripes in susceptibility agree well in shape with the observations of Kalisky et al. of enhanced susceptibility above twin planes in the underdoped pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (Ba-122). By comparing the predicted stripe amplitudes with experiment and using the London relation between penetration depth and superfluid density, we estimate the enhanced Cooper pair density on the twin planes, and the barrier force for a vortex to cross a twin plane. Fits to the observed temperature dependence of the stripe amplitude suggest that the twin planes have a higher critical temperature than the bulk, although stripes are not observed above the bulk critical temperature., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

We employed a scanning Hall probe microscope to detect the hopping of individual vortices between pinning sites along grain boundaries in YBCO thin films in the presence of an applied current. Detecting the motion of individual vortices allowed us to probe the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the grain boundary with voltage sensitivity below a femto-volt. We find a very sharp onset of dissipation with V~I^n with an unprecedented high exponent of n~290 that shows essentially no dependence on temperature or grain boundary angle. Our data have no straightforward explanation within the existing grain boundary transport models.

We measured the effects of periodic surface holes, created using a focused ion beam, on the phase diagram of the vortex matter in high-T_c Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta} crystals. Differential magneto-optical measurements show that the irreversibility line is shifted to higher fields and temperatures, with respect to the pristine melting line. The irreversibility line displays weak field dependence between integer matching fields indicating multiple-flux-quanta pinning at holes. We find reduced equilibrium compressibility of the vortex matter at integer matching fields, which is strong evidence for the existence of thermodynamic Mott insulator phases. Shaking with a transverse ac field surprisingly reveals first-order melting that is not shifted with respect to the pristine melting line and that seems to occur within the Mott insulator regions. This melting is understood to be the first-order transition in the bulk of the crystal beneath the surface holes. Identifying the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in the recently-discovered ferro-oxypnictide family of superconductors, RFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{y}$, where $R$ is a rare earth, is a high priority. Many of the proposed order parameters have internal $\pi$ phase shifts, like the d-wave order found in the cuprates, which would result in direction-dependent phase shifts in tunnelling. In dense polycrystalline samples, these phase shifts in turn would result in spontaneous orbital currents and magnetization in the superconducting state. We perform scanning SQUID microscopy on a dense polycrystalline sample of \NdFeAsO$_{0.94}$F$_{0.06}$ with $T_c=48$ K and find no such spontaneous currents, ruling out many of the proposed order parameters., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; to appear in JPSJ

We report scanning Hall probe microscopy of highly underdoped superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} with T_c ranging from 5 to 15 K which showed distinct flux bundles with less than one superconducting flux quantum (Phi_0) through the sample surface. The sub-Phi_0 features occurred more frequently for lower T_c, were more mobile than conventional vortices, and occurred more readily when the sample was cooled with an in-plane field component. It is widely believed that the perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is an unconventional superconductor with broken time reversal symmetry. It has been predicted that superconductors with broken time reversal symmetry should have spontaneously generated supercurrents at edges and domain walls. We have done careful imaging of the magnetic fields above Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ single crystals using scanning Hall bar and SQUID microscopies, and see no evidence for such spontaneously generated supercurrents. We use the results from our magnetic imaging to place upper limits on the spontaneously generated supercurrents at edges and domain walls as a function of domain size. For a single domain, this upper limit is below the predicted signal by two orders of magnitude. We speculate on the causes and implications of the lack of large spontaneous supercurrents in this very interesting superconducting system., Comment: 9 pages

We present the results of a systematic study of thin-films of amorphous indium-oxide near the superconductor-insulator transition. We show that the film's resistivity follows a simple, well-defined, power-law dependence on the perpendicular magnetic field. This dependence holds well into the insulating state. High-purity and homogeneous YBa2Cu3Oy single crystals with carrier doping level near the AFM-SC boundary have been obtained in the oxygen content range between y = 6.340 and 6.370. The crystals are ortho-II phase at room temperature and undergo the orthorhombic to tetragonal transition at about 140_Degree_C. They show sharp superconducting transitions, with Tc between 4 and 20 K. Tc changes by 0.8 K when the oxygen content y is changed by 0.001, and is also sensitive to annealing conditions near room temperature, due to the dependence of doping on oxygen ordering correlation lengths. We have measured the dynamics of individual magnetic fluxoids entering and leaving thin film, photolithographically patterned rings of underdoped high-temperature superconductor BSCCO using a variable sample temperature scanning SQUID microscope. These measurements can be understood within a phenomenological model in which the fluxoid number changes by thermal activation of a Pearl vortex in the ring wall. The Intlerlayer Josephson coupling between the planes of Tl2Ba2CuO6 was determined using infrared spectroscopy and magnetic flux vortex imaging. We present the solution to London's equations for the magnetic fields of a vortex oriented parallel to the plane, and normal to a crystal face, of a layered superconductor. These expressions account for flux spreading at the superconducting surface, which can change the apparent size of the vortex along the planes by as much as 30%. We have magnetically imaged interlayer Josephson vortices emerging from an ac face of single crystals of the single layer cuprate high-Tc superconductor (Hg,Cu)Ba2CuO4+d. These images provide a direct measurement of the c-axis penetration depth of about 10 microns. This length is a factor of 10 longer than predicted by the interlayer tunneling model for the mechanism of superconductivity in layered compounds, indicating that the condensation energy available through this mechanism is 100 times smaller than is required for superconductivity., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The spontaneous flux generation and magnetic field modulation of the critical current in a 0-pi Josephson junction are calculated for different ratios of the junction length to the Josephson penetration depth, and different ratios of the 0-junction length to the pi-junction length. These calculations apply to a Pb-YBCO c-axis oriented junction with one YBCO twin boundary, as well as other experimental systems. Measurements of such a junction can provide information on the nature of the c-axis Josephson coupling and the symmetry of the order parameter in YBCO.
