In the Mediterranean Basin, the pistachio crop is considered an emerging nut crop due to the dependence of the European nut markets on international imports. Consequently, the extension and intensification of pistachio production to nontraditional growing areas has promoted both classic and emerging diseases of this nut tree, which are limiting factors in crop production. Due to the limited interest in pistachio crops, the aetiology and epidemiology of the main pistachio diseases are poorly studied. Thus, this review summarizes the state of pistachio disease research, with particular attention given to the Mediterranean area. The information reported here is based not only on the literature, but also the advancement of our research on pistachio diseases conducted in both Italy and Spain. We describe the main fungal diseases of the tree canopy in Mediterranean countries, such as Botryosphaeria panicle and shoot blight, Septoria leaf spot, and stem, branch and trunk canker diseases, followed by the main soilborne diseases. In addition, we review minor and/or sporadic fungal diseases originating in not only the Mediterranean, but also other pistachio‐producing countries. Another section is dedicated to other diseases caused by bacteria, phytoplasmas, viruses and nematodes. Aims: The aim of this study was to establish a method to collect root exudates from olive plants. The method was validated by determining the effect of root exudates on the viability of Verticillium dahliae conidia and microsclerotia. Methods: Three collection media (deionized distilled water, 0.01 M CaSO4 solution, Hoagland nutrient solution) and four collection periods (2, 4, 6, 12 h) were assessed to identify the most appropriate combination for root exudate collection in olive plants ('Picual'). To validate the method, root exudates were collected from olive cultivars with different susceptibilities to V. dahliae ['Frantoio' (resistant); 'Arbequina' (moderately susceptible), and 'Picual' (highly susceptible)] and treated or not treated with two microorganisms (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens PAB-024; Aureobasidium pullulans AP08) or two phosphite salts (Naturfos®; Phoscuprico®). The effect of root exudates on the germination of V. dahliae conidia and microsclerotia was evaluated in vitro. The dissolved organic carbon in the root exudates was estimated. Results: A 0.01 M CaSO4 solution and 4 h were confirmed to be the preferred medium and timing combination to collect root exudates from olive. Root exudates from 'Arbequina' and 'Picual' significantly induced conidia and microsclerotia germination in comparison with the control without exudates. AP08 was the most effective treatment to enhance the effectiveness of root exudates in decreasing conidia and microsclerotia viability. Root exudates from 'Picual' or, 'Frantoio' treated with AP08 showed the highest levels of organic carbon. Background: Endometrioid Stromal Sarcomas are an infrequent group of mesenchymal tumors that we must take into account in the differential diagnosis despite representing only 0.2% of tumors of the female genital tract, as they can go unnoticed until advanced stages.Case Presentation: Fifty-fourth year-old woman referred from the Urology department due to incidental finding of adnexal mass in MRI during examination after renoureteral colic, in the case of a 50 mm solid cystic mass in LE. MT were within the normal range, and the CT scan observed this mass in contact with the left ureter. The surgery was completed with hysterectomy and contralateral adnexectomy without incident and chemotherapy treatment was not added. The pathological result was ovarian tissue with low-grade endometrial sarcoma. Currently, after two years of follow-up, the patient remains stable without any recurrence of disease.Conclusions: Endometrioid stromal sarcomas are rare tumors that originate in the endometrial stroma, the ovarian location being rare. Multi-environment field testing of chickpea accessions winter sown in Southern Spain showed that environmental effects on yield were more important than genotypic effects and GEI. The most detrimental factor on grain yield was ascochyta blight infection. We did not find a significant effect of low temperatures on yield in the environments studied, probably due to the mild winters in the area. On the contrary, we found detrimental effects of high temperatures at the reproductive stage, particularly with numbers of days with Tmax >30 °C. We found that genotypic effects were larger than the environmental on ascochyta infection as we included accessions previously selected for their levels of resistance or susceptibility. Biplots based on the WAASB/productivity ratio highlighted AS19, AS30, AS23, AS26, and AS18 accessions as the best for productivity and stability of yield, matching with those with a lower ascochyta blight infection. Sulla is a biannual forage legume cultivated throughout the Mediterranean Basin. It can be severely damaged by powdery mildew, but there is little understanding on its causal species or its host range. The taxonomic characterization of Erysiphe species is mainly based on the examination of chasmothecia morphology, or on the molecular analysis of ITS1 and ITS2 sequences. However, a description of chasmothecia morphology or ITS sequences is not always available to clearly assign a given isolate to an existing or novel Erysiphe species. In an attempt to clarify the identity of the powdery mildew infecting sulla crop we studied the morphology and ITS of nine populations collected over years and countries and compared them with available ITS sequences. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the powdery mildews collected on sulla clustered together with isolates collected on Coronilla varia in an independent clade between the E. guarinonii/E. trifoliorum and E. palczewskii clades, strongly suggesting that all these sequences correspond to the same Erysiphe species. Measurements of conidia and conidial foot cells of the sulla-infecting powdery mildews partially overlap those of other Erysiphe species, although they clearly differentiate from them, supporting the assumption that powdery mildews from sulla belong to a distinct species as observed from the phylogenetic analysis. As far as we know, our study is the first to report the molecular characterization of powdery mildew isolated on plants from the Hedysarum clade. Cross-inoculations confirmed a high specialization of the powdery mildew of sulla, with the sulla's isolates infecting only the S. coronaria accessions, and none of the accessions from the other legume genera studied. All studied S. coronaria accessions were heavily infected by the sulla isolate but not by any other isolate used. The development of a drug delivery liquid formulation of ester – based tetracaine local anaesthetic is synthesised in silico via the formation of a therapeutic deep eutectic solvent in combination with citral, a natural monoterpenoid. The properties of the obtained liquid system, studied at the nanoscopic level, are derived from a combination of quantum chemistry and classical molecular dynamics simulations. The intermolecular forces (hydrogen bonding) were analysed and their relationship with liquid phase properties were established. Water effect on the liquid phase properties were also considered in terms of competing for hydrogen bonding sites in the components of the developed fluid. The systems proposed in this work were studied using CIT (HBA) 1:1 TET (HBD) molar ratio at temperatures ranging from 288 K to 318 K and 1 bar. The hydrogen bond network developed between the oxygen atom in citral molecules and the –NH group in tetracaine molecules under those conditions, confirmed via minimal cluster analysis, is maintained during the addition of water up to 1.3 wt% as the water molecules do not disrupt the intermolecular hydrogen bond but develop new interactions (hydrogen bonds) with citral and tetracaine monomers presented in the fluid. The reported results probed the suitability of the considered system as an alternative drug delivery method as well as the possibility of developing deep eutectic-based formulation of anaesthetics using natural compounds due to the formation of effective and strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds. This paper presents the different scenarios to be faced as a result of the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean Sea, and the rescue operations carried out. These consequences are of a very diverse nature, since some of them affect only specific individuals, but others, however, affect society as a whole. On the one hand, there are the short-term consequences, which refer to criminal proceedings, either against NGOs and the crews of their ships, or against State officials. On the other hand, the long-term consequences (and that we have not faced yet), would be the threat to the free movement system (Schengen), and the possible knock-on effect. The faba bean (Vicia faba) is a temperate grain legume, that is regaining interest due to the high demand for food and feed uses and the environmental services provided. The parasitic weed broomrape (Orobanche crenata) appears as the major constraint to agricultural production in the Mediterranean Basin. The yield stability can be managed by adjusting agronomic practices and breeding for adaptation. In this study, we compared the performance of three susceptible faba bean accessions with that of eight lines previously selected for their broomrape resistance, in multi-environment field trials. Results confirmed that the grain yield in the region was negatively affected, mainly by broomrape infection, followed at a distance by ascochyta blight (Ascochyta fabae), whereas the grain yield was little affected by the low occurring levels of chocolate spot infection (Botrytis fabae). The yield was favored by rain at flowering and was reduced by low temperatures at pre-flowering and flowering, and by high temperatures at flowering and grain-filling. The combined ANOVA showed significant effects of the genotype, environment, and genotypex environment interaction. The weighted average of the absolute scores biplot (WAASB), a heat map with 21 scenarios based on the WAASB ratio and the multi-trait stability index (MTSI) were utilized to determine the mean performance and stability of the faba bean genotypes. Pistachio represents an emerging nut crop across the Mediterranean basin. In Spain, pistachio has been traditionally cultivated in marginal‐dry areas with unfavourable climatic conditions for plant diseases. Consequently, little attention has been given to research on pistachio diseases until recently. Symptoms of branch dieback and cankers, and shoot and panicle blight have been recently observed in commercial pistachio orchards across southern Spain. In this study, 10 commercial pistachio orchards showing disease symptoms were surveyed between 2017 and 2018. Botryosphaeriaceae fungi were consistently isolated from affected shoots, among other fungal families with minor relevance. Representative isolates of each family were characterized based on colony and conidial morphology, optimum growth temperature, and the comparison of DNA sequence data (ITS, LSU, EF, TUB2, and ACT genomic regions). Detached and attached shoots, and attached panicles of pistachio cv. Kerman were inoculated with mycelial plugs or conidial suspensions to demonstrate the pathogenicity of the selected isolates. Botryosphaeria dothidea, Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae, Neofusicoccum mediterraneum, N. parvum, Diaporthe neotheicola, Diaporthe sp., Eutypa lata, Eutypa sp., Cytospora sp., and Phaeoacremonium minimum were identified. P. minimum had the highest optimum growth temperature (29.6 °C) and Cytospora sp. the lowest (21–22 °C). Botryosphaeriaceae isolates showed the largest lesions on inoculated shoots, with L. pseudotheobromae being the most aggressive, followed by Neofusicoccum species. Panicles inoculated with N. mediterraneum showed blight symptoms and canker formation 6 weeks after inoculation, without significant differences in aggressiveness between isolates. Every year, millions of tonnes of dead biomass from algae and seagrasses are collected on the Mediterranean coasts. Posidonia oceanica is one of the most abundant species. In this work, leaves and rhizomes from this plant were pulped, alkalized, and cationized to make a value-added product. The main effects of five separate pulping variables, namely temperature, time, NaOH concentration, anthraquinone, and liquid-to-solid ratio were studied. The total procedure to produce cationic fibers took only 3 h (approximately), which made it a feasible process. A pseudo-second-order rate equation was used to fit the results of chemical modification via incorporation of quaternary ammonium ions. Characterization involved X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. The authors found that mild conditions were enough to achieve good results, reaching degrees of substitution of 0.20 for leaves and 0.12 for rhizomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The large amount of cellulose found in Ulva sp. and its low percentage of lignin-like compounds make it an interesting raw material for partially substituting wood pulp to produce pulp and paper. This work shows the suitability of mild chemical treatments for papermaking using residual biomass from this green seaweed, harvested on the beaches, in order to give it added value. A chemical characterization was used to determine ethanol-benzene, hot water, and 1% soda extractives, ash content, holocellulose, α-cellulose, and acid-insoluble material. Cellulose extraction was performed with low proportions of soda and hydrogen peroxide, and it was subjected to a refining step. A design of experiments was used to explain the influence of soda (6%, 8%, and 10%) and hydrogen peroxide (2%, 4%, and 6%) based on oven-dry weight, plus refining (1000 PFI revolutions, 3000 PFI revolutions, and 5000 PFI revolutions). The results showed that to attain good paper strength, it is advisable to operate at maximum alkali charge, minimum peroxide concentration, and refine to a high degree. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tidal waste causes accumulation of seaweed and marine plants on coasts, resulting in an. eutrophication process and proliferation of insects, nematodes, and bacteria that negatively affect the beach ecosystem and local human economic activities. This work highlights the potential of beach wrack from the Andalusian Mediterranean coastline as cellulosic materials, in the frame of concepts such as waste management, revalorization, and reduction of hazardous chemicals. With this purpose, beach waste was harvested, washed with water, characterized, and subjected to chemical-free hydrothermal treatments. A central composite design was defined in order to relate the hydrothermal treatment conditions to the composition of the liquid and solid fractions. It was concluded that polynomial models encompassing linear, quadratic, and binary effect parameters reproduce the experimental results satisfactorily (e.g., R2 = 0.97–0.98 for saccharides released). As expected, severe conditions resulted in higher removal of hemicellulose, and of small amounts of lignin along with it, but at the expense of the yield. Results allowed us to choose high temperature (150 °C), short time (30 min) and low liquid/solid ratio (8) as a compromise solution, by which the yield and the outlet concentrations of glucose, xylose, and arabinose approached their optimal values. Although the environmental performance of the paper industry has drastically improved since the nineties, Western manufacturers still refuse to reuse agricultural waste. Moreover, papermakers make extensive use of poorly biodegradable polyelectrolytes which are toxic to fish. With this in mind, we suggest pulping lignocellulosic residues by sulfur-free processes, decrystallizing cellulose, and introducing positively charged functional groups with the goal of partially replacing conventional cationic polymers. Functionalization of pulps from orange tree trimmings, rapeseed stalks and wheat straw was carried out with different concentrations of (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl)trimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC). When the mole ratio of CHPTAC to anhydroglucose units was 4, cationic fibers reached charge density values over 0.2 meq/g after 40 or 60 min of reaction. Then, we tested the performance of these fibers in papermaking, using titanium dioxide, whose zeta potential is negative, as filler. Opacity of lightweight paper was raised to 90%, surpassing a conventional cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), while the increase in brightness (from 37.8% to 41.9%) was not as good as that achieved with CPAM. Even if residues cannot replace wood, chemical modifications of them can result in valuable cationic fibers, making synthetic polyelectrolytes less necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Almond anthracnose is a serious and emerging disease in several countries. All isolates causing almond anthracnose have been assigned to the Colletotrichum acutatum species complex, of which only C.fioriniae and C. godetiae have been associated with the disease to date. Here, we characterized Colletotrichum isolates from almond fruit affected by anthracnose in the Andalusia region. Two Colletotrichum isolates causing olive anthracnose were included for comparison. Morphological characteristics were useful for separating the isolates into groups based on colony morphology. Pathogenicity tests in almond, olive, and apple fruit showed differences in virulence and some degree of pathogenic specialization among isolates. Molecular characterization allowed clear identification of the Colletotrichum isolates tested. The olive isolates were identified as C. godetiae and C. nymphaeae, both previously identified in Andalusian olive orchards. Two phylogenetic species were identified among the almond isolates: C. godetiae, with gray colonies, which is well known in other countries, and C. acutatum, with pink-orange colonies. This species identification differs from those of pink-colony subpopulations described in other countries, which are C. fioriniae. Therefore, this study is also the first report of a new species of Colletotrichum causing almond anthracnose within the C. acutatum species complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The stalks that are left on the field after harvesting rapeseed crops could be used to make packaging grade paper. This work evaluates the suitability of mechanical and thermomechanical pulps from rapeseed stalks for papermaking, with a view to alleviating the limitations of recycled fluting. Their performance was compared to that of commercial fluting (recycled fluting) of the same basis weight, 100 g/m2, and to that of virgin pulps from pine wood. The thermomechanical pulp was refined to improve key mechanical properties. Its drainability was found to be very low, even before refining, and its breaking length after beating to 1200 PFI revolutions, 4 km, surpassed that of sheets of recycled fluting that were obtained under similar conditions. These findings support the hypothesis that high-yield pulps from rapeseed stalks are a strong choice of virgin fibres to produce fluting and, generally speaking, packaging paper. To optimize the pulping and refining processes of new alternative raw materials for papermaking, researchers generally perform tests that consume considerable time and large amounts of sample. We propose measuring the morphological properties of pulps from orange tree trimmings by image analysis systems, which are fast and user-friendly, to develop models relating key mechanical properties to the dimensions, the deformation and the population of fibers. Data modeling involves multiple linear regression, as used in other studies, and support vector regression, not used before for this purpose, achieving higher R 2 values (up to 0.90). Although tensile, tear and burst tests are still required to obtain accurate values, a quick morphological characterization allows for a rough but satisfactory prediction of paper strength. Rice straw pulps produced under different conditions were subject to near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. At the same time, samples from those pulps were used to make handsheets, whose mechanical properties were measured. These values and those of brightness were successfully fitted to the pulping variables. Relating them to the NIR spectra, we found valid correlations for all parameters except the burst index, concluding that NIR spectroscopy could be used as an economical, timesaving and non-intrusive way to predict the mechanical strength of pulps before the paper sheet is made. The main goal of the present study was to analyze the differential effect of paternal and maternal parenting styles on aggressiveness during adolescence. The sample was made up of 271 students, aged 10-14, who completed questionnaires. The analysis of the data shows that boys display higher scores in physical and verbal aggressiveness than girls, with physical aggressiveness increasing with age. A high level of coincidence between paternal and maternal parenting style's dimensions was found, as well as higher scores for mothers than fathers in all the dimensions. Correlation analysis shows significant negative values in almost all dimensions of paternal and maternal parenting styles. Regression analysis reveals differences in paternal vs. maternal parenting style regarding aggressiveness. One of the most popular ways to carry out the re-use of wastes from agriculture is the pulping, refining and bleaching of those residues for papermaking. Spain annually produces more than 300 thousand tonnes of Citrus sinensis (orange tree) trimmings, crops being concentrated in the East and the South of the country. Their chemical composition is similar to that of common hardwoods. This work aims to show the suitability of ethanolamine cooking when applied to orange tree trimmings, and to study the effect of peroxide bleaching and refining on some key properties. As for bleaching, we used a design of experiments to discuss the influence of peroxide concentration, time and temperature on the yield, brightness, viscosity, kappa number of pulps and mechanical properties of paper sheets. Refining was studied by analysing the diminishment in freeness and the mechanical properties of paper sheets formed. Results showed that even a mild bleaching process gives out a high relative brightness gain, but a multiple-step process is necessary to achieve enough brightness for printing paper. Mechanical properties of non-refined pulps were found to be too low for paper of any grade, but they were greatly improved by refining. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To estimate healthcare resource utilisation (HCRU) and costs associated with pneumococcal disease (PD) in children aged ≤17 years in England from 2003–2019. Methods: A retrospective study in children aged ≤17 years was conducted using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink Gold primary care database and Hospital Episodes Statistics Admitted Patient Care database from 2003–2019. Episodes of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) were identified in hospital, pneumococcal pneumonia (PP) and all-cause pneumonia (ACP) episodes in primary care and in hospital, and acute otitis media (AOM) episodes in primary care. General practitioner (GP) visits and inpatient admission yearly rates were calculated per 1,000 persons. The average inpatient and primary care cost per episode were calculated. The Mann-Kendall test was used to assess monotonic time trends. Results: 1,500,686 children were followed from 2003–2019. The highest average inpatient cost per episode [£34,255 (95%CI 27,222–41,288)] was in IPD, followed by ACP [£3,549 (95%CI 3,405–3,693)] and PP [£1,498 (95%CI 1,153–1,843)]. The highest primary care costs per episode were in AOM [£48.7 (95%CI 48.7–48.7)], followed by PP [£38.4 (95%CI 37.0–39.7)] and ACP [£28.6 (95%CI 28.2–29.1)]. The highest inpatient admission and GP visits yearly rates were observed in children aged <2 years. Across years, a significant decrease in GP visits yearly rates was observed for PP, ACP and AOM in children overall (p-value<0.001). A decrease in primary care costs was observed for ACP (p-value<0.001). There was an increasing trend in AOM primary care costs (p-value<0.001). No significant trends were observed in inpatient admission yearly rates in PP, ACP or IPD and inpatient costs per episode in PP, ACP and IPD. Conclusion: From 2003–2019, primary care HCRU and costs decreased (except for PP cost), but no trends in inpatient HCRU and costs were observed. The effect of mineral nutrition on wilt diseases has been previously reported in many herbaceous hosts, though such an effect on Verticillium wilt in olive (Olea europaea L.; VWO), caused by Verticillium dahliae, is still uncertain. Field observations reveal that nitrogen (N) excess or imbalances of N-potassium (K) favour VWO epidemics. However, this has yet to be demonstrated. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influences of nutritional imbalances of N and K in V. dahliae infection of olive. To this end, adjusted treatments with N excess (↑N+↑Na), K deficiency (↓K) and their combination (↑N+↑Na+↓K) were evaluated on the viability of V. dahliae microsclerotia (MS), as well as on disease development in olive plants. In parallel, the potential indirect effect of the treatments on the viability of conidia and MS of V. dahliae was evaluated through the stimuli of root exudates. Treatments ↑N+↑Na and ↑N+↑Na+↓K decreased MS germination and disease progress, whereas ↓K significantly increased both parameters. Root exudates from treated plants increased the conidia germination of V. dahliae but reduced the MS germination. Abstract: The reduction in oil reserves and the increase in greenhouse gas emissions have raised growing interest in the production and use of alternative, non-fossil fuels. The industrial production of bioethanol involves the use of amylaceous or sugary raw materials, which has aroused a hot debate on its sustainability. Bioethanol obtained from lignocellulosic biomass has proved to be an interesting alternative on account of the wide distribution of this raw material, the absence of competition with the food market and its economy in relation to conventional agricultural resources. Isolated lignin comes mainly from pulp and paper production processes. The obtainment of cellulose pulp with the Organosolv process is especially attractive as it provides highly fluid lignin that can be easily fed into oven and boiler combustion chambers. Also, Organosolv lignin contains little ash relative to other types of industrial lignin (e.g. that obtained with the kraft process), which facilitates its combustion. In this work, the Organosolv process was used to delignify lignocellulosic material from wheat straw and quantified residual lignin in the black liquor with a view to its use for energy production. The starting material was delignified with ethanol–water and acetone–water mixtures in the presence of various acids; this facilitated recycling of the solvent and recovery of dissolved lignin. Abstract: The influence of the hydrothermal treatment conditions of rice straw (temperature – 150–190°C , time – 0–20min after reaching the operation temperature – and liquid/solid ratio – 6–8), on the composition of liquid and solid fractions was studied. Polynomial models were found for to reproduce the experimental results with errors less than 6%. Operating to 190°C, 15min and 9 liquid/solid ratio was obtained high values of glucose (1.92g/L), xylose (3.97g/L), arabinose (0.99g/L) and acetic acid (1.96g/L), what allows to save capital when not operating with the maximum time and/or liquid/solid ratio; yield in the solid fraction is 88.1% and lignin content 24.43%. If what it is required to obtain good values of yield (96.46%) and lignin content, is necessary to operate to 150°C, obtaining lower concentrations glucose (1.11%), xylose (2.78%), arabinose (0.56%) and acetic acid (0.39%). Ethanolamine pulping of solid fraction of hydrothermal treatment provides pulp with higher or similar properties to those obtained of pulping rice straw with ethanolamine or soda. There is potential for expanding lentil cultivation to dry and warm Mediterranean rain-fed environments at low altitudes, where early sowings are recommended to profit from winter rains and escape drought and excessive heat at the grain filling stage. In cooler areas, frost might be a problem in the early sowings, however, in warmer areas such as our low altitude warm southern Spanish environments the most detrimental factor on lentil seed yield appeared to be high temperatures at grain-filling stage, particularly heat waves of more than 5 days with Tmax > 30 °C. This was followed by broomrape infection, the combination of both being dramatic. We detected variation for stress tolerance, with S17 and R7 accessions outstanding for all stress indexes used, followed by S23, Nsir, S6, and S12. Broomrape infection ranked second risk in the area. No complete resistance to broomrape was identified, but there was a significant variation in the level of infection, with accessions S14 and R17 being the more resistant across environments. Abstract: Rice straw was used as an alternative raw material to obtain cellulosics pulps. Pulping was done by using classics reagents as soda (with anthraquinone and parabenzoquinone as aditives), potassium hydroxide and Kraft process. The holocellulose, α-cellulose and lignin contents of rice straw (viz. 60.7, 41.2 and 21.9wt%, respectively) are similar to those of some woody raw materials such as pine and eucalyptus, and various non-wood materials including olive tree prunings, wheat straw and sunflower stalks. Pulping tests were conducted by using soda, soda and anthraquinone at 1wt%, soda and parabenzoquinone at 1wt%, potassium hydroxide and sodium sulphate (Kraft process) under two different sets of operating conditions, namely: (a) a 10wt% reagent concentration, 170°C and 60min; and (b) 15wt% reagent, 180°C and 90min. The solid/liquid ratio was 6 in both cases. Paper sheets made from pulp extracted by cooking with soda (15wt%) and AQ (1wt%) at 180°C and 90min pulp exhibit the best drainage index, breaking length, stretch and burst index (viz. 23°SR, 3494m, 3.34% and 2.51kN/g, respectively). Mauran is an anionic, sulfated heteropolysaccharide with a high uronic-acid content, synthesized by strain S-30 of the halophilic bacterium Halomonas maura. Under optimum environmental and nutritional conditions, it is capable of producing up to 3.8 g of mauran per liter of medium. Aqueous solutions of mauran are highly viscous and display pseudoplastic, viscoelastic and thixotropic behavior. Its viscosity is stable over a wide pH range (3–11), after freezing-thawing processes, and in the presence of sucrose, salts, surfactants and α-hydroxyl acids. It has a high capacity for binding lead and other cations. Its molecular mass when collected from an MY medium supplemented with 2.5% w/v salt during the stationary growth phase is 4.7×106 Da. Rosellinia necatrix is a prevalent soil-borne plant-pathogenic fungus that is the causal agent of white root rot disease in a broad range of host plants. The limited availability of genomic resources for R. necatrix has complicated a thorough understanding of its infection biology. Here, we sequenced nine R. necatrix strains with Oxford Nanopore sequencing technology, and with DNA proximity ligation we generated a gapless assembly of one of the genomes into ten chromosomes. Whereas many filamentous pathogens display a so-called two-speed genome with more dynamic and more conserved compartments, the R. necatrix genome does not display such genome compartmentalization. It has recently been proposed that fungal plant pathogens may employ effectors with antimicrobial activity to manipulate the host microbiota to promote infection. In the predicted secretome of R. necatrix, 26 putative antimicrobial effector proteins were identified, nine of which are expressed during plant colonization. Two of the candidates were tested, both of which were found to possess selective antimicrobial activity. Intriguingly, some of the inhibited bacteria are antagonists of R. necatrix growth in vitro and can alleviate R. necatrix infection on cotton plants. Collectively, our data show that R. necatrix encodes antimicrobials that are expressed during host colonization and that may contribute to modulation of host-associated microbiota to stimulate disease development. Author summary: Most if not all organisms, including plants, associate with a wide diversity of microbes that live either inside these organisms, or in their immediate vicinity, and that collectively form their microbiota. Moreover, increasing evidence reveals that microbiota represent a key determinant for their health. To cause disease on their hosts, microbial pathogens need to overcome host immunity. Conceivably, pathogens need to overcome beneficial contributions that microbiota make to an organism's health. Here, we show that the genome of the fungal white root rot pathogen Rosellinia necatrix encodes putatively secreted antimicrobial proteins, many of which are expressed during plant colonization. Two of these proteins are functionally analyzed in this study, and we reveal that they can inhibit the growth of bacteria that antagonise R. necatrix growth in vitro and that can alleviate R. necatrix infection on cotton plants. This study aimed to assess the relationship between age-related changes in Neurofilament Light Chain (NFL), a marker of neuronal function, and various factors including muscle function, body composition, and metabolomic markers. The study included 40 participants, aged 20 to 85 years. NFL levels were measured, and muscle function, body composition, and metabolomic markers were assessed. NFL levels increased significantly with age, particularly in men. Negative correlations were found between NFL levels and measures of muscle function, such as grip strength, walking speed, and chair test performance, indicating a decline in muscle performance with increasing NFL. These associations were more pronounced in men. NFL levels also negatively correlated with muscle quality in men, as measured by 50 kHz phase angle. In terms of body composition, NFL was positively correlated with markers of fat mass and negatively correlated with markers of muscle mass, predominantly in men. Metabolomic analysis revealed significant associations between NFL levels and specific metabolites, with gender-dependent relationships observed. This study provides insights into the relationship between circulating serum NFL, muscle function, and aging. This paper analyzes the influence of parents' educational practices on aggressive behavior during the last phase of primary education and the first cycle of secondary education, as well as the agreement between different measures of aggressiveness in a group of 326 male and female students aged 10 to 16 from a number of schools and high schools in Jaen (Spain). Educational practices analysed include affection/rejection by parents and three types of discipline-inductive, strict and indulgent. Aggressiveness in turn has been assessed from three tell-tale ways: the adolescent, their classmates and their teacher. The results of the study indicate that aggressiveness is better predicted by negative educational practices such as critique-rejection and rigid and indulgent discipline approaches. Portugal has a diverse common bean germplasm, which is still grown in farmers' fields. In this work, we searched for resistance to rust ( Uromyces appendiculatus) and powdery mildew ( Erysiphe diffusa) in a representative collection of the Portuguese common bean germplasm. Despite many accessions depicting intermediate levels of resistance when compared to the susceptible check, 24 and 13 accessions showed low levels of infection, in spite of a compatible interaction (disease severity ( DS) values lower than 5% and infection type ( IT) of 4), to rust and powdery mildew, respectively, indicative of partial resistance. Moreover, a resistant reaction was observed in 11 accessions when inoculated with powdery mildew ( IT = 0-1) and in additional 11 accessions (one in common) when inoculated with rust ( IT = 0-2). The levels of resistance found in this report anticipate great potential of the Portuguese national germplasm, recently reported as genetically closer to the Andean common bean gene pool, for disease resistance breeding of this important crop. Olive anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum species causes dramatic losses of fruit yield and oil quality worldwide. A total of 185 Colletotrichum isolates obtained from olives and other hosts showing anthracnose symptoms in Spain and other olive-growing countries over the world were characterized. Colony and conidial morphology, benomyl-sensitive, and casein-hydrolysis activity were recorded. Multilocus alignments of ITS, TUB2, ACT, CHS-1, HIS3, and/or GAPDH were conducted for their molecular identification. The pathogenicity of the most representative Colletotrichum species was tested to olive fruits and to other hosts, such as almonds, apples, oleander, sweet oranges, and strawberries. In general, the phenotypic characters recorded were not useful to identify all species, although they allowed the separation of some species or species complexes. ITS and TUB2 were enough to infer Colletotrichum species within C. acutatum and C. boninense complexes, whereas ITS, TUB2, ACT, CHS-1, HIS-3, and GADPH regions were necessary to discriminate within the C. gloesporioides complex. Twelve Colletotrichum species belonging to C. acutatum, C. boninense, and C. gloeosporioides complexes were identified, with C. godetiae being dominant in Spain, Italy, Greece, and Tunisia, C. nymphaeae in Portugal, and C. fioriniae in California. The highest diversity with eight Colletotrichum spp. was found in Australia. Significant differences in virulence to olives were observed between isolates depending on the Colletotrichum species and host origin. When other hosts were inoculated, most of the Colletotrichum isolates tested were pathogenic in all the hosts evaluated, except for C. siamense to apple and sweet orange fruits, and C. godetiae to oleander leaves. Abstract: This research is focused on the study of the effect of rheological grade sepiolite on flocculation, retention and drainage of fiber–cement suspensions by using a focused beam reflectance measurement probe and a vacuum drainage tester. Results show that the sepiolite could be used in the manufacture of fiber–cement to increase the retention of solids and the drainage rate especially in mixtures containing poly(vinylalcohol) fibers. Abstract: Sepiolite is used to increase thixotropy of cement slurries for easier processing, to prevent sagging and to provide a better final quality in the manufacture of fibre-reinforced cement products. However, the effect of sepiolite on flocculation and its interactions with the components of fibre cement are yet unknown. The aim of this research is to study the effects of sepiolite on the flocculation of different fibre-reinforced cement slurries induced by anionic polyacrylamides (A-PAMs). Flocculation and floc properties were studied by monitoring the chord size distribution in real time employing a focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) probe. The results show that sepiolite increases floc size and floc stability in fibre-cement suspensions. Abstract: Oil palm empty fruit bunches were used as an alternative raw material to obtain cellulosic pulp. Pulping was done by using high-boiling point organic solvents of decreased polluting power relative to classical (Kraft, sulphite) solvents but affording operation at similar pressure levels. The holocellulose, α-cellulose and lignin contents of oil palm empty fruit bunches (viz. 66.97%, 47.91% and 24.45%, respectively) are similar to those of some woody raw materials such as pine and eucalyptus, and various non-wood materials including olive tree prunings, wheat straw and sunflower stalks. Pulping tests were conducted by using ethyleneglycol, diethyleneglycol, ethanolamine and diethanolamine under two different sets of operating conditions, namely: (a) a 70% solvent concentration, 170°C and 90min; and (b) 80% solvent, 180°C and 150min. The solid/liquid ratio was six in both cases. The amine solvents were found to provide pulp with better properties than did the glycol solvents. Ethanolamine pulp exhibited the best viscosity and drainage index (viz. 636mL/g and 17 °SR, respectively), and paper made from it the best breaking length (1709m), stretch (1.95%), burst index (0.98kN/g) and tear index (0.33mNm2/g). Operating costs can be reduced by using milder conditions, which provide similar results. In any case, the amines are to be preferred to the glycols as solvents for this purpose. Purpose: To examine the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms and the corresponding risk factors among pregnant women during the confinement due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Spain.Materials and Methods: Between 15 April and 14 May 2020, a multicentre cross-sectional survey was performed to study depression, anxiety and resilience in a sample of Spanish pregnant women during the lockdown set up by the Government in response to COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. We designed an anonymous online self-administered questionnaire (https://bit.ly/34RRpq1) that included the Spanish validated versions of the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and the Connor-Davidson Resilience 10-items Scale (CD-RISC-10).Results: A total of 514 pregnant women completed the survey. 72.8% had been confined < 40 days and 27.2% between 41 and 60 days. 182 (35.4%) participants scored over 10, with 21.3% scoring over 13 (75th Percentile) in depressive symptoms rates. We found high trait and anxiety scores, with 223 (43.4%) and 227 (44.2%) pregnant women scoring over the trait and state mean scores. Neither depression, anxiety or resilience levels showed any significant correlation with the length of confinement. We found low CD-RISC-10 scores.Conclusions: We found a high prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms during the quarantine, although we did not find an increased prevalence of psychological distress according to length of home confinement. A series of racemic unnatural amino acids was rationally designed on the basis of recently published X-ray structures of the GluA2 LBD with bound phenylalanine-based antagonists. Twelve new diaryl- or aryl/heteroaryl-substituted phenylalanine derivatives were synthesized and evaluated in vitro in radioligand binding assays at native rat ionotropic glutamate receptors. The most interesting compound in this series, ( RS)-2-amino-3-(3′-hydroxy-5-(1 H-pyrazol-4-yl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3-yl)propanoic acid 7e, showed the binding affinity of 4.6 μ m for native AMPA receptors and over fourfold lower affinity for kainic acid receptors. Furthermore, 7e was evaluated at recombinant homomeric rat GluA2 and GluA3 receptors. Recently reported X-ray structures 5 CBR and 5 CBS, representing two distinct antagonist binding modes, were used as templates for molecular docking of the synthesized series. Binding data supported with molecular modeling confirmed that aryl/heteroaryl-substituted phenylalanine analogues effectively bind to AMPA receptors with low micromolar affinity and high selectivity over native NMDA and kainate receptors. In order to map out molecular determinants for the competitive blockade of AMPA receptor subtypes, a series of racemic aryl-substituted phenylalanines was synthesized and pharmacologically characterized in vitro at native rat ionotropic glutamate receptors. Most of the compounds showed micromolar affinity and preference for AMPA receptors. Individual stereoisomers of selected compounds were further evaluated at recombinant homomeric rat GluA2 and GluA3 receptors. The most potent compound, (−)-2-amino-3-(6-chloro-2′,5'-dihydroxy-5-nitro-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3-yl)propanoic acid, the expected R -isomer showing K i of 1.71 μM at the GluA2 subtype, was found to competitively antagonize GluA2( Q ) i receptors in TEVC electrophysiological experiments ( K b = 2.13 μM). Molecular docking experiments allowed us to compare two alternative antagonist binding modes for the synthesized phenylalanines at the GluA2 binding core, showing the direction for further structural modifications. A new series of carboxyaryl-substituted phenylalanines was designed, synthesized and pharmacologically characterized in vitro at native rat ionotropic glutamate receptors as well as at cloned homomeric kainate receptors GluK1–GluK3. Among them, six compounds bound to GluK1 receptor subtypes with reasonable affinity ( K i values in the range of 4.9–7.5 μM). A structure–activity relationship (SAR) for the obtained series, focused mainly on the pharmacological effect of structural modifications in the 4- and 5-position of the phenylalanine ring, was established. To illustrate the results, molecular docking of the synthesized series to the X-ray structure of GluK1 ligand binding core was performed. The influence of individual substituents at the phenylalanine ring for both the affinity and selectivity at AMPA, GluK1 and GluK3 receptors was analyzed, giving directions for future studies. The pigment profile of three monovarietal extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) (Cornicabra, Picual, and Hojiblanca varietals) and their binary and ternary mixtures have been analyzed through visible spectroscopy. The information extracted from the registered spectra was treated and then modeled following two different chemometric approaches: a linear one based on multiple linear regression models, and a non-linear one based on the employment of artificial neural networks. All the designed models were validated using a k-fold cross-validation, and the largest mean absolute errors (MAEs) obtained for the varietal quantifications were 10% for the linear model and 2.8% for the non-linear one. These results let us prove the efficient generalization capability of these mathematical tools, as they are able to accurately quantify olive oil varietals in mixtures through their pigment profile only requiring visible spectroscopy data. Objective: to study the effect of co-inoculation with Ensifer meliloti and Halomonas maura of the leguminous Medicago sativa L., on growth, nutritional and functional value, grown under salinity conditions.Methods: plants of M. sativa were grown in a solution with a mixture of salts (CaSO4, MgCl, NaCl and NaHCO 3) and were co-inoculated with its specific rhizobium and the halophilic moderated bacterium H. maura. Different physiologic parameters were determined, as well as, nitrogen and minerals content. Furthermore, an assay of in vitro digestibility was carried out.Results: salinity had a negative effect on the plants; however, co-inoculation increased yield, nitrogen content, total minerals, Ca and Mg. Moreover, physiologic parameters as water potential and leghemoglobin content in fresh nodules were higher compared to those of plants inoculated only with E. meliloti. Both, salinity and bacterial treatment with E. meliloti and H. maura increased the antioxidant capacity of the legume, in dialyzates and retentates collected after an in vitro digestibility assay.Conclusion: co-inoculation of plants with E. meliloti and H. maura could improve the alfalfa yield under specific salinity conditions, increasing the nutritional and functional value of the plants. Abstract: In this work, we characterized various unconventional pulping raw materials in terms of their contents in hollocelulose, α-cellulose, lignin, ethanol–benzene extractables, ash, and hot water and 1% soda solubles. Also, we characterized pulp obtained from each material by using an ethyleneglycol concentration of 65% at 180°C for 75min, followed by beating at 1500 revolutions in a PFI refiner—all of which are compatible with existing facilities for Kraft and soda pulping processes. We characterized vine shoots, cotton stalks, Leucaena leucocephala and Chamaecytisus proliferus as pulping raw materials and found Ch. proliferus and cotton stalks to be the best for the intended purpose on the grounds of their increased contents in holocellulose (79.73 and 72.86%) and α-cellulose (45.37 and 58.48%), and their decreased contents in ethanol–benzene extractables (2.64 and 1.42%), hot water solubles (2.79 and 3.33%) and 1% soda solubles (16.67 and 20.34%). These properties resulted in increased pulp yields and hence in efficient use of these two types of raw material. The paper sheets obtained of different pulps were characterized and those from Ch. proliferus found to be the best overall as they exhibited an increased breaking length (4644m), stretch (2.87%), burst index (2.46kN/g) tear index (0.33mNm2/g) and brightness (49.92% ISO); in addition Ch. proliferus pulp was obtained with a high yield (62.88%). The halophilic bacterium Halomonas maura is capable of anaerobic respiration on nitrates. By insertional mutagenesis with the minitransposon Tn- 5 we obtained the mutant Tc62, which was incapable of anaerobic respiration on nitrates. An analysis of the regions adjacent to the transposon allowed us to characterize the membrane-bound anaerobic-respiratory nitrate reductase narGHJI gene cluster in H. maura. We identified consensus sequences for fumarate and nitrate reductase regulator (FNR)-like protein-binding sites in the promoter regions of the nar genes and consensus sequences corresponding to the NarL binding sites upstream of the nar genes. RT-PCR analysis showed that the narGHJI operon was expressed in response to anaerobic conditions when nitrate was available as electron acceptor. This membrane-bound nitrate reductase is the only enzyme responsible for anaerobic respiration on nitrate in H. maura. In this article we discuss the possible relationship between this enzyme and a dissimilatory nitrate-reduction-to-ammonia process (DNRA) in H. maura and its role in the colonization of the rhizosphere. The article examines the involvement of EpsABCJ genes in the biosynthesis of the exopolysaccharide (EPS) mauran produced by Halomonas maura by researchers from Granada, Spain. The results of the study showed a defective assembly of high-molecular EPS in H. maura due to the absence of the export protein EpsA and the chain-length regulator EpsC.

Abstract: Halomonas maura is a moderately halophilic bacterium which lives in saline soils and synthesises an exopolysaccharide known as mauran. Strain S-31T grew in a nitrogen-free medium under an N2 atmosphere; the acetylene reduction assay proved positive under specific conditions. We identified the nifH gene in this strain by using degenerate oligonucleotides designed from highly preserved gene sequences obtained from the alignment of a large number of nifH sequences from different microorganisms. Our results lead us to conclude that H. maura is capable of fixing nitrogen under microaerobic conditions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We have discovered that many Halomonas species harbour large extrachromosomal DNA elements. Using currently available protocols it is technically very difficult to identify large plasmids in bacteria, and even more so when they are coated in mucous polysaccharide. We used culture conditions suitable for both halophilic and halophilic exopolysaccharide-producing bacteria and applied a modified gel electrophoresis method to locate and visualise the megaplasmids. Almost all the species of Halomonas studied harbour two plasmids of about 70 kb and 600 kb and some species carry other smaller extrachromosomal DNA elements. The common presence of these megaplasmids may well be related to the survival strategies of the bacteria in their special surroundings. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
