Mass measurements with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer at CERN-ISOLDE improve mass uncertainties of neutron-deficient tin isotopes towards doubly-magic $^{100}$Sn. The mass uncertainty of $^{103}$Sn was reduced by a factor of 4, and the new value for the mass excess of -67104(18) keV is compared with nuclear \textit{ab initio} and density functional theory calculations. Based on these results and local trends in the mass surface, the masses of $^{101,103}$Sn, as determined through their $Q_{\textrm{EC}}$ values, were found to be inconsistent with the new results. From our measurement for $^{103}$Sn, we extrapolate the mass excess of $^{101}$Sn to -60005(300) keV, which is significantly more bound than previously suggested. By correcting the mass values for $^{101,103}$Sn, we also adjust the values of $^{104}$Sb, $^{105,107}$Te, $^{108}$I, $^{109,111}$Xe, and $^{112}$Cs near the proton drip line which are connected through their $\alpha$- and proton $Q$-values. The results show an overall smoothening of the mass surface, suggesting the absence of deformation energy above the ${N=50}$ shell closure., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Very low-mass stars (those <0.3 solar masses) host orbiting terrestrial planets more frequently than other types of stars, but the compositions of those planets are largely unknown. We use mid-infrared spectroscopy with the James Webb Space Telescope to investigate the chemical composition of the planet-forming disk around ISO-ChaI 147, a 0.11 solar-mass star. The inner disk has a carbon-rich chemistry: we identify emission from 13 carbon-bearing molecules including ethane and benzene. We derive large column densities of hydrocarbons indicating that we probe deep into the disk. The high carbon to oxygen ratio we infer indicates radial transport of material within the disk, which we predict would affect the bulk composition of any planets forming in the disk., Comment: Published, 36 pages, 8 figures

The Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) forms a critical transition region between the ocean and sea ice cover as it protects the close ice further in from the effect of the steepest and most energetic open ocean waves. As waves propagate through the MIZ, they get exponentially attenuated. Unfortunately, the associated attenuation coefficient is difficult to accurately estimate and model, and there are still large uncertainties around which attenuation mechanisms dominate depending on the conditions. This makes it challenging to predict waves in ice attenuation, as well as sea ice breakup and dynamics. Here, we report in-situ observations of strongly modulated waves-in-ice amplitude, with a modulation period of around 12 hours. We show that simple explanations, such as changes in the incoming open water waves, or the effect of tides and currents and bathymetry, cannot explain for the observed modulation. Therefore, the significant wave height modulation observed in the ice most likely comes from a modulation of the waves-in-ice attenuation coefficient. To explain this, we conjecture that one or several waves-in-ice attenuation mechanisms are periodically modulated and switched on and off in the area of interest. We gather evidence that sea ice convergence and divergence is likely the factor driving this change in the waves in ice attenuation mechanisms and attenuation coefficient, for example by modulating the intensity of floe-floe interaction mechanisms.

Disorder in materials may be used to tune their functionalities, but much more strikingly, its presence can entail entirely new behavior. This happens in charge-ice where structural disorder is not weak and local, but strong and long-range correlated. Here, two cations of different charge occupy a pyrochlore lattice, arranging themselves such that all tetrahedra host two cations of each type. The ensuing correlated disorder is characterized by randomly packed loops of a single cation-type. If the cations are magnetic and interact antiferromagnetically, a new type of magnet with strong interactions along the loops, but frustrated interactions between loops, emerges. This results in an ensemble of intertwined Heisenberg spin chains that form an algebraic spin liquid at intermediate temperatures. At lower temperatures, we find these non-local degrees of freedom undergo a discontinuous transition to a spin nematic. While this phase does not break time reversal symmetry, its spin symmetry is reduced resulting in a dramatically slower spin relaxation. The transition is sensitive to the statistics of the cation loops, providing both a direct thermodynamic signature of otherwise elusive structural information and a structural route to engineering nematic phase stability., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, submitted

Isomers close to doubly-magic $^{78}_{28}$Ni$_{50}$ provide essential information on the shell evolution and shape coexistence near the ${Z=28}$ and ${N=50}$ double shell closure. We report the excitation energy measurement of the $1/2^{+}$ isomer in $^{79}_{30}$Zn$_{49}$ through independent high-precision mass measurements with the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap and with the ISOLTRAP Multi-Reflection Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer. We unambiguously place the $1/2^{+}$ isomer at 942(10) keV, slightly below the $5/2^+$ state at 983(3) keV. With the use of state-of-the-art shell-model diagonalizations, complemented with Discrete Non Orthogonal shell-model calculations which are used here the first time to interpret shape coexistence, we find low-lying deformed intruder states, similar to other ${N=49}$ isotones. The $1/2^{+}$ isomer is interpreted as the band-head of a low-lying deformed structure akin to a predicted low-lying deformed band in $^{80}$Zn, and points to shape coexistence in $^{79,80}$Zn similar to the one observed in $^{78}$Ni. Resonant driving of electronic transitions with coherent laser sources creates quantum coherent superpositions of the involved electronic states. Most time-resolved studies have focused on gases or isolated subsystems embedded in insulating solids, aiming for applications in quantum information. Here, we demonstrate coherent control of orbital wavefunctions in pyrochlore $Tb_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7}$, which forms an interacting spin liquid ground state. We show that resonant excitation with a strong THz pulse creates a coherent superposition of the lowest energy Tb 4f states before the magnetic interactions eventually dephase them. The coherence manifests itself as a macroscopic oscillating magnetic dipole, which is detected by ultrafast resonant x-ray diffraction. The induced quantum coherence demonstrates coherent control of orbital wave functions, a new tool for the ultrafast manipulation and investigation of quantum materials.

Terrestrial and sub-Neptune planets are expected to form in the inner ($<10~$AU) regions of protoplanetary disks. Water plays a key role in their formation, although it is yet unclear whether water molecules are formed in-situ or transported from the outer disk. So far Spitzer Space Telescope observations have only provided water luminosity upper limits for dust-depleted inner disks, similar to PDS 70, the first system with direct confirmation of protoplanet presence. Here we report JWST observations of PDS 70, a benchmark target to search for water in a disk hosting a large ($\sim54~$AU) planet-carved gap separating an inner and outer disk. Our findings show water in the inner disk of PDS 70. This implies that potential terrestrial planets forming therein have access to a water reservoir. The column densities of water vapour suggest in-situ formation via a reaction sequence involving O, H$_2$, and/or OH, and survival through water self-shielding. This is also supported by the presence of CO$_2$ emission, another molecule sensitive to UV photodissociation. Dust shielding, and replenishment of both gas and small dust from the outer disk, may also play a role in sustaining the water reservoir. The Medium-Resolution integral field Spectrometer (MRS) of MIRI on board JWST performs spectroscopy between 5 and 28~$\mu$m. The optics of the MRS introduce substantial distortion, and this needs to be rectified in order to reconstruct the observed astrophysical scene. We use data from the JWST/MIRI commissioning and cycle 1 calibration phase, to derive the MRS geometric distortion and astrometric solution, a critical step in the calibration of MRS data. These solutions come in the form of transform matrices that map the detector pixels to spatial coordinates of a local MRS coordinate system called $\alpha$/$\beta$, to the global JWST observatory coordinates V2/V3. For every MRS spectral band and each slice dispersed on the detector, the transform of detector pixels to $\alpha$/$\beta$ is fit by a two-dimensional polynomial, using a raster of point source observations. A polynomial transform is used to map the coordinates from $\alpha$/$\beta$ to V2/V3. We calibrated the distortion of all 198 discrete slices of the MIRI/MRS IFUs, and derived an updated Field of View (FoV) for each MRS spectral band. The precision of the distortion solution is estimated to be better than one tenth of a spatial resolution element, with a root mean square (rms) of 10 milli-arcsecond (mas) at 5 $\mu$m, to 23 mas at 27 $\mu$m. Finally we find that the wheel positioning repeatability causes an additional astrometric error of rms 30 mas. We have demonstrated the MRS astrometric calibration strategy and analysis enabling the calibration of MRS spectra, a critical step in the data pipeline especially for science with spatially resolved objects. The distortion calibration was folded into the JWST pipeline in Calibration Reference Data System (CRDS) context jwst\_1094.pmap. The distortion calibration precision meets the pre-launch requirement, and the estimated total astrometric uncertainty is 50 mas., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. We investigate the growth conditions for thin (less than 200 nm) sputtered aluminum (Al) films. These coatings are needed for various applications, e.g. for advanced manufacturing processes in the aerospace industry or for nanostructures for quantum devices. Obtaining high-quality films, with low roughness, requires precise optimization of the deposition process. To this end, we tune various sputtering parameters such as the deposition rate, temperature, and power, which enables 50 nm thin films with a root mean square (RMS) roughness of less than 1 nm and high reflectivity. Finally, we confirm the high quality of the deposited films by realizing superconducting single-photon detectors integrated into multi-layer heterostructures consisting of an aluminum mirror and a silicon dioxide dielectric spacer. We achieve an improvement in detection efficiency at 780 nm from 40 % to 70 % by this integration approach., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Carbon is an essential element for life but how much can be delivered to young planets is still an open question. The chemical characterization of planet-forming disks is a crucial step in our understanding of the diversity and habitability of exoplanets. Very low-mass stars ($<0.2~M_{\odot}$) are interesting targets because they host a rich population of terrestrial planets. Here we present the JWST detection of abundant hydrocarbons in the disk of a very low-mass star obtained as part of the MIRI mid-INfrared Disk Survey (MINDS). In addition to very strong and broad emission from C$_2$H$_2$ and its $^{13}$C$^{12}$CH$_2$ isotopologue, C$_4$H$_2$, benzene, and possibly CH$_4$ are identified, but water, PAH and silicate features are weak or absent. The lack of small silicate grains implies that we can look deep down into this disk. These detections testify to an active warm hydrocarbon chemistry with a high C/O ratio in the inner 0.1 au of this disk, perhaps due to destruction of carbonaceous grains. The exceptionally high C$_2$H$_2$/CO$_2$ and C$_2$H$_2$/H$_2$O column density ratios suggest that oxygen is locked up in icy pebbles and planetesimals outside the water iceline. The ability to efficiently control charge and spin in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is crucial for fundamental research and underpins technological development. Here, we explore the tunability of magnetism, superconductivity and crystal structure in the stripe phase of the cuprate La_2-xBa_xCuO_4, with x = 0.115 and 0.135, by employing temperature-dependent (down to 400 mK) muon-spin rotation and AC susceptibility, as well as X-ray scattering experiments under compressive uniaxial stress in the CuO_2 plane. A sixfold increase of the 3-dimensional (3D) superconducting critical temperature T_c and a full recovery of the 3D phase coherence is observed in both samples with the application of extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa. This finding demonstrates the removal of the well-known 1/8-anomaly of cuprates by uniaxial stress. On the other hand, the spin-stripe order temperature as well as the magnetic fraction at 400 mK show only a modest decrease under stress. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. However, a substantial decrease of the magnetic volume fraction and a full suppression of the low-temperature tetragonal structure is found at elevated temperatures, which is a necessary condition for the development of the 3D superconducting phase with optimal T_c. Our results evidence a remarkable cooperation between the long-range static spin-stripe order and the underlying crystalline order with the three-dimensional fully coherent superconductivity. Overall, these results suggest that the stripe- and the SC order may have a common physical mechanism., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. The MRS is one of the four observing modes of JWST/MIRI. Using JWST in-flight data of unresolved (point) sources, we can derive the MRS absolute spectral response function (ASRF) starting from raw data. Spectral fringing plays a critical role in the derivation and interpretation of the MRS ASRF. In this paper, we present an alternative way to calibrate the data. Firstly, we aim to derive a fringe correction that accounts for the dependence of the fringe properties on the MIRI pupil illumination and detector pixel sampling of the point spread function. Secondly, we aim to derive the MRS ASRF using an absolute flux calibrator observed across the full 5 to 28 $\mu$m wavelength range of the MRS. Thirdly, we aim to apply the new ASRF to the spectrum of a G dwarf and compare with the output of the JWST/MIRI default data reduction pipeline. Finally, we examine the impact of the different fringe corrections on the detectability of molecular features in the G dwarf and K giant. The absolute flux calibrator HD 163466 (A-star) is used to derive tailored point source fringe flats at each of the default dither locations of the MRS. The fringe-corrected point source integrated spectrum of HD 163466 is used to derive the MRS ASRF using a theoretical model for the stellar continuum. A cross-correlation is run to quantify the uncertainty on the detection of CO, SiO, and OH in the K giant and CO in the G dwarf for different fringe corrections. The point-source-tailored fringe correction and ASRF are found to perform at the same level as the current corrections, beating down the fringe contrast to the sub-percent level, whilst mitigating the alteration of real molecular features. The same tailored solutions can be applied to other MRS unresolved targets. Quantum sensors and qubits are usually two-level systems (TLS), the quantum analogs of classical bits which assume binary values '0' or '1'. They are useful to the extent to which they can persist in quantum superpositions of '0' and '1' in real environments. However, such TLS are never alone in real materials and devices, and couplings to other degrees of freedom limit the lifetimes - called decoherence times - of the superposition states. Decoherence occurs via two major routes - excitation hopping and fluctuating electromagnetic fields. Common mitigation strategies are based on material improvements, exploitation of clock states which couple only to second rather than first order to external perturbations, and reduction of interactions via extreme dilution of pure materials made from isotopes selected to minimize noise from nuclear spins. We demonstrate that for a dense TLS network in a noisy nuclear spin bath, we can take advantage of interactions to pass from hopping to fluctuation dominance, increasing decoherence times by almost three orders of magnitude. In the dilute rare-earth insulator LiY1-xTbxF4, Tb ions realize TLS characterized by a 30GHz splitting and readily implemented clock states. Dipolar interactions lead to coherent, localized pairs of Tb ions, that decohere due to fluctuating quantum mechanical ring-exchange interaction, sensing the slow dynamics of the surrounding, nearly localized Tb spins. The hopping and fluctuation regimes are sharply distinguished by their Rabi oscillations and the invisible vs. strong effect of classic 'error correcting' microwave pulse sequences. Laying open the decoherence mechanisms at play in a dense, disordered and noisy network of interacting TLS, our work expands the search space for quantum sensors and qubits to include clusters in dense, disordered materials, that can be explored for localization effects., Comment: 39 pages

During the commissioning of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the mid-infrared instrument (MIRI) observed NGC6552 with the MIRI Imager and the medium-resolution spectrograph (MRS). NGC6552 is an active galactic nucleus (AGN) at redshift 0.0266 classified as a Seyfert 2 nucleus in the optical, and Compton-thick AGN in X-rays. This work exemplifies and demonstrates the MRS capabilities to study the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectra and characterize the physical conditions and kinematics of the ionized and molecular gas in the nuclear regions of nearby galaxies. We obtained the nuclear, circumnuclear, and central mid-IR spectra of NGC6552. They provide the first clear observational evidence for a nuclear outflow in NGC6552. The outflow contributes to 67$\pm$7% of the total line flux independent of the ionization potential (27 to 187 eV) and critical densities (10$^4$ to 4$\times$10$^{6}$ cm$^{-3}$), showing an average blue-shifted peak velocity of -127$\pm$45 kms$^{-1}$ and an outflow maximal velocity of 698$\pm$80 kms$^{-1}$. Since the mid-IR photons penetrate dusty regions as efficiently as X-ray keV photons, we interpret these results as the evidence for a highly ionized, non-stratified, AGN-powered, and fast outflowing gas in a low density environment (few 10$^{3}$ cm$^{-3}$) located very close (<0.2kpc) to the Compton-thick AGN. Nine pure rotational molecular Hydrogen lines are detected and spectrally resolved, and exhibit symmetric Gaussian profiles, consistent with the galactic rotation, and with no evidence of outflowing H$_{2}$ material. We detect a warm H$_{2}$ mass of $1.9\pm1.1\times10^7 M_{\odot}$ in the central region (1.8 kpc in diameter) of the galaxy, with almost 30% of that mass in the circum-nuclear region. We review recent research on quantum glasses, with a focus on their equilibrium dynamics and the interplay between glassiness and localization phenomena. Helium-3 has nowadays become one of the most important candidates for studies in fundamental physics [1, 2, 3], nuclear and atomic structure [4, 5], magnetometry and metrology [6] as well as chemistry and medicine [7, 8]. In particular, $^3$He nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) probes have been proposed as a new standard for absolute magnetometry [6, 9]. This requires a high-accuracy value for the $^3$He nuclear magnetic moment, which, however, has so far been determined only indirectly and with a relative precision of $12$ parts per billon (p.p.b.) [10,11]. Here we investigate the $^3$He$^+$ ground-state hyperfine structure in a Penning trap to directly measure the nuclear $g$-factor of $^3$He$^+$ $g'_I=-4.255\, 099\, 606\, 9(30)_{stat}(17)_{sys}$, the zero-field hyperfine splitting $E_{\rm HFS}^{\rm exp}=-8\, 665\, 649\, 865.77(26)_{stat}(1)_{sys}$ Hz and the bound electron $g$-factor $g_e^\text{exp}=-2.002\, 177\, 415\, 79(34)_{stat}(30)_{sys}$. The latter is consistent with our theoretical value $g_e^\text{theo}=-2.002\, 177\, 416\, 252\, 23(39)$ based on parameters and fundamental constants from [12]. Our measured value for the $^3$He$^+$ nuclear $g$-factor allows for the determination of the $g$-factor of the bare nucleus $g_I=-4.255\, 250\, 699\, 7(30)_{stat}(17)_{sys}(1)_{theo}$ via our accurate calculation of the diamagnetic shielding constant [13] $\sigma_{^3He^+}=0.000\,035\,507\,38(3)$. This constitutes the first direct calibration for $^3$He NMR probes and an improvement of the precision by one order of magnitude compared to previous indirect results. The measured zero-field hyperfine splitting improves the precision by two orders of magnitude compared to the previous most precise value [14] and enables us to determine the Zemach radius [15] to $r_Z=2.608(24)$ fm.

First ever measurements of the ratios of free cyclotron frequencies of heavy highly charged ions with Z>50 with relative uncertainties close to 1e-11 are presented. Such accurate measurements have become realistic due to the construction of the novel cryogenic multi-Penning-trap mass spectrometer PENTATRAP. Based on the measured frequency ratios, the mass differences of five pairs of stable xenon isotopes, ranging from 126Xe to 134Xe, have been determined. Moreover, the first direct measurement of an electron binding energy in a heavy highly charged ion, namely of the 37th atomic electron in xenon, with an uncertainty of a few eV is demonstrated. The obtained value agrees with the calculated one using two independent different implementations of the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. PENTATRAP opens the door to future measurements of electron binding energies in highly charged heavy ions for more stringent tests of bound-state quantum electrodynamics in strong electromagnetic fields and for an investigation of the manifestation of Light Dark Matter in isotopic chains of certain chemical elements., Comment: 2 figures, 1 table, 28 references

Using the example of metal clusters, an experimental setup and procedure is presented, which allows for the generation of size and charge-state selected polyanions from monoanions in a molecular beam. As a characteristic feature of this modular setup, the further charging process via sequential electron attachment within a 3-state digital trap takes place after mass-selection. In contrast to other approaches, the rf based concept permits to access heavy particles. The procedure is highly flexible with respect to the preparation process and potentially suitable for a wide variety of anionic species. By adjusting the storage conditions, i.e., the radio frequency, to the change in the mass-to-charge ratio, we succeeded to produce clusters in highly negative charge states, i.e., Ag$_{800}^{7-}$. The capabilities of the setup are demonstrated by experiments extracting electronic and optical properties of polyanionic metal clusters by analyzing the corresponding photoelectron spectra.

Exploring the interaction of light with time-varying media is an intellectual challenge that, in addition to fundamental aspects, provides a pathway to multiple promising applications. Time modulation constitutes here a fundamental handle to control light on entirely different grounds. That holds particularly for complex systems simultaneously structured in space and time. However, a realistic description of time-varying materials requires considering their material dispersion. The combination thereof has barely been considered but is crucial since dispersion accompanies materials suitable for dynamic modulation. As a canonical scattering problem from which many general insights can be obtained, we develop and apply a self-consistent analytical theory of light scattering by a sphere made from a time-varying material exemplarily assumed to have a Lorentzian dispersion. We discuss the eigensolutions of Maxwell's equations in the bulk and present a dedicated Mie theory. The proposed theory is verified with full-wave simulations. We disclose effects such as energy transfer from the time-modulation subsystem to the electromagnetic field, amplifying carefully structured incident fields. Since many phenomena can be studied on analytical grounds with our formalism, it will be indispensable when exploring electromagnetic phenomena in time-varying and spatially structured finite objects of other geometries., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on-board JWST will provide imaging, coronagraphy, low-resolution spectroscopy and medium-resolution spectroscopy at unprecedented sensitivity levels in the mid-infrared wavelength range. The Medium-Resolution Spectrometer (MRS) of MIRI is an integral field spectrograph that provides diffraction-limited spectroscopy between 4.9 and 28.3 um, within a FOV varying from 13 to 56" square. From ground testing, we calculate the physical parameters essential to general observers and calibrating the wavelength solution and resolving power of the MRS is critical for maximising the scientific performance of the instrument. We have used ground-based observations of discrete spectral features in combination with Fabry-Perot etalon spectra to characterize the wavelength solution and spectral resolving power of the MRS. We present the methodology used to derive the MRS spectral characterisation, which includes the precise wavelength coverage of each MRS sub-band, computation of the resolving power as a function of wavelength, and measuring slice-dependent spectral distortions. The resolving power varies from R3500 in channel 1 to R1500 in channel 4. Based on the ground test data, the wavelength calibration accuracy is estimated to be below one tenth of a pixel, with small systematic shifts due to the target position within a slice for unresolved sources, that have a maximum amplitude of about 0.25 spectral resolution elements. Based on ground test data, the MRS complies with the spectral requirements for both the R and wavelength accuracy for which it was designed. The generating functional of a self-interacting scalar quantum field theory (QFT), which contains all the relevant information about real-time dynamics and scattering experiments, can be mapped onto a collection of multipartite-entangled two-level sensors via an interferometric protocol that exploits a specific set of source functions. Although one typically focuses on impulsive delta-like sources, as these give direct access to $n$-point Feynman propagators, we show in this work that using always-on harmonic sources can simplify substantially the sensing protocol. In a specific regime, the effective real-time dynamics of the quantum sensors can be described by a quantum Ising model with long-range couplings, the range and strength of which contains all the relevant information about the renormalisation of the QFT, which can now be extracted in the absence of multi-partite entanglement. We present a detailed analysis of how this sensing protocol can be relevant to characterise the long-wavelength QFT that describes quantised sound waves of trapped-ion crystals in the vicinity of a structural phase transition, opening a new route to characterise the associated renormalisation of sound.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) is an emerging material for integrated quantum photonics with its excellent linear and nonlinear optical properties. In particular, its second-order nonlinear susceptibility $\chi^{(2)}$ allows single-photon generation. We have grown AlN thin films on silicon nitride via reactive DC magnetron sputtering. The thin films have been characterized using X-ray diffraction, optical reflectometry, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The crystalline properties of the thin films have been improved by optimizing the nitrogen to argon ratio and the magnetron DC power of the deposition process. X-ray diffraction measurements confirm the fabrication of high-quality c-axis oriented thin films with a full width at half maximum of the rocking curves of 3.9 deg. for 300-nm-thick films. Atomic force microscopy measurements reveal a root mean square surface roughness below 1 nm. The AlN deposition on SiN allows us to fabricate hybrid photonic circuits with a new approach that avoids the challenging patterning of AlN.

We present a coherently combined laser amplifier with 16 channels from a multicore fiber in a proof-of-principle demonstration. Filled aperture beam splitting and combination together with temporal phasing is realized in a compact and low-component-count setup. Combined average power of up to 70 W with 40 ps pulses are achieved with combination efficiencies around 80%.

We use complementary optical spectroscopy methods to directly measure the lowest crystal-field energies of the rare-earth quantum magnet LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_{x}$F$_{4}$, including their hyperfine splittings, with more than 10 times higher resolution than previous work. We are able to observe energy level splittings due to the $^6\mathrm{Li}$ and $^7\mathrm{Li}$ isotopes, as well as non-equidistantly spaced hyperfine transitions originating from dipolar and quadrupolar hyperfine interactions. We provide refined crystal field parameters and extract the dipolar and quadrupolar hyperfine constants ${A_J=0.02703\pm0.00003}$ $\textrm{cm}^{-1}$ and ${B= 0.04 \pm0.01}$ $\textrm{cm}^{-1}$, respectively. Thereupon we determine all crystal-field energy levels and magnetic moments of the $^5I_8$ ground state manifold, including the (non-linear) hyperfine corrections. The latter match the measurement-based estimates. The scale of the non-linear hyperfine corrections sets an upper bound for the inhomogeneous line widths that would still allow for unique addressing of a selected hyperfine transition. e.g. for quantum information applications. The Mu3e experiment aims to find or exclude the lepton flavour violating decay $\mu \rightarrow eee$ at branching fractions above $10^{-16}$. A first phase of the experiment using an existing beamline at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is designed to reach a single event sensitivity of $2\cdot 10^{-15}$. We present an overview of all aspects of the technical design and expected performance of the phase~I Mu3e detector. The high rate of up to $10^{8}$ muon decays per second and the low momenta of the decay electrons and positrons pose a unique set of challenges, which we tackle using an ultra thin tracking detector based on high-voltage monolithic active pixel sensors combined with scintillating fibres and tiles for precise timing measurements., Comment: 117 pages. We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence, but also that these states are energetically very finely balanced. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. These results strongly suggest a similar pairing mechanism for spin-stripe order, the spatially-modulated 2D and uniform 3D SC orders, imposing an important constraint on theoretical models., Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters (2020)

The nuclear astrophysics setup at the Institute for Nuclear Physics, University of Cologne, Germany is dedicated to measurements of total and partial cross sections of charged-particle induced reactions at astrophysically relevant energies. These observables are key ingredients for reaction network calculations of various stellar scenarios, and crucial for the understanding of the nucleosynthesis of elements. The experiments utilize the high-efficiency $\gamma$-ray spectrometer HORUS, and the 10 MV FN-Tandem accelerator. An updated target chamber as well as further experimental methods established in the last years will be presented which allow to measure cross sections down to the nb region. The reliability of the measured cross sections is proven by a $^{89}$Y(p,$\gamma$)$^{90}$Zr commissioning experiment. Additionally, an application for nuclear astrophysics will be presented. In the Solar System, minor bodies and dust deliver various materials to planetary surfaces. Several exoplanetary systems are known to host inner and outer belts, analogues of the main asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt. We study the possibility that exominor bodies and exodust deliver volatiles and refractories to the exoplanets in the system HR8799 by performing N-body simulations. The model consists of the host star, four giant planets (HR8799 e, d, c, and b), 650000 test particles representing the inner belt, and 1450000 test particles representing the outer belt. Moreover we modelled dust populations that originate from both belts. Within a million years, the two belts evolve towards the expected dynamical structure (also derived in other works), where mean-motion resonances with the planets carve the analogues of Kirkwood gaps. We find that, after this point, the planets suffer impacts by objects from the inner and outer belt at rates that are essentially constant with time, while dust populations do not contribute significantly to the delivery process. We convert the impact rates to volatile and refractory delivery rates using our best estimates of the total mass contained in the belts and their volatile and refractory content. Over their lifetime, the four giant planets receive between $10^{-4}$ and $10^{-3}M_\bigoplus$ of material from both belts. The total amount of delivered volatiles and refractories, ${5\times10^{-3}\textrm{M}_\bigoplus}$, is small compared to the total mass of the planets, $11\times10^{3}\textrm{M}_\bigoplus$. However, if the planets were formed to be volatile-rich, their exogenous enrichment in refractory material may well be significant and observable, for example with JWST-MIRI. Assuming our Solar System as typical, exomoons may outnumber exoplanets. If their habitability fraction is similar, they would thus constitute the largest portion of habitable real estate in the Universe. Icy moons in our Solar System, such as Europa and Enceladus, have already been shown to possess liquid water, a prerequisite for life on Earth. We intend to investigate under what circumstances small, icy moons may sustain subsurface oceans and thus be "subsurface habitable". We pay specific attention to tidal heating. We made use of a phenomenological approach to tidal heating. We computed the orbit averaged flux from both stellar and planetary (both thermal and reflected stellar) illumination. We then calculated subsurface temperatures depending on illumination and thermal conduction to the surface through the ice shell and an insulating layer of regolith. We adopted a conduction only model, ignoring volcanism and ice shell convection as an outlet for internal heat. In doing so, we determined at which depth, if any, ice melts and a subsurface ocean forms. We find an analytical expression between the moon's physical and orbital characteristics and the melting depth. Since this expression directly relates icy moon observables to the melting depth, it allows us to swiftly put an upper limit on the melting depth for any given moon. We reproduce the existence of Enceladus' subsurface ocean; we also find that the two largest moons of Uranus (Titania & Oberon) could well sustain them. Our model predicts that Rhea does not have liquid water. Habitable exomoon environments may be found across an exoplanetary system, largely irrespective of the distance to the host star. Small, icy subsurface habitable moons may exist anywhere beyond the snow line. This may, in future observations, expand the search area for extraterrestrial habitable environments beyond the circumstellar habitable zone., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. We report the observation of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the $(110)$ surface of the transparent bulk insulator SnO$_2$, and the tunability of its carrier density by means of temperature or Eu deposition. The 2DES is insensitive to surface reconstructions and, surprisingly, it survives even after exposure to ambient conditions --an extraordinary fact recalling the well known catalytic properties SnO$_2$. Our data show that surface oxygen vacancies are at the origin of such 2DES, providing key information about the long-debated origin of $n$-type conductivity in SnO$_2$, at the basis of a wide range of applications. Furthermore, our study shows that the emergence of a 2DES in a given oxide depends on a delicate interplay between its crystal structure and the orbital character of its conduction band., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

Super-resolution aims at increasing image resolution by algorithmic means and has progressed over the recent years due to advances in the fields of computer vision and deep learning. Convolutional Neural Networks based on a variety of architectures have been applied to the problem, e.g. autoencoders and residual networks. While most research focuses on the processing of photographs consisting only of RGB color channels, little work can be found concentrating on multi-band, analytic satellite imagery. Satellite images often include a panchromatic band, which has higher spatial resolution but lower spectral resolution than the other bands. In the field of remote sensing, there is a long tradition of applying pan-sharpening to satellite images, i.e. bringing the multispectral bands to the higher spatial resolution by merging them with the panchromatic band. To our knowledge there are so far no approaches to super-resolution which take advantage of the panchromatic band. In this paper we propose a method to train state-of-the-art CNNs using pairs of lower-resolution multispectral and high-resolution pan-sharpened image tiles in order to create super-resolved analytic images. The derived quality metrics show that the method improves information content of the processed images. Moving trapped-ion qubits in a microstructured array of radiofrequency traps offers a route towards realizing scalable quantum processing nodes. Establishing such nodes, providing sufficient functionality to represent a building block for emerging quantum technologies, e.g. a quantum computer or quantum repeater, remains a formidable technological challenge. In this review, we present a holistic view on such an architecture, including the relevant components, their characterization and their impact on the overall system performance. We present a hardware architecture based on a uniform linear segmented multilayer trap, controlled by a custom-made fast multi-channel arbitrary waveform generator. The latter allows for conducting a set of different ion shuttling operations at sufficient speed and quality. We describe the relevant parameters and performance specifications for microstructured ion traps, waveform generators and additional circuitry, along with suitable measurement schemes to verify the system performance. Furthermore, a set of different basic shuttling operations for dynamic qubit register reconfiguration is described and characterized in detail.
