We simulated the growth of 2D islands with 2 kinds of diffusion atoms using the kinetic Monte- Carlo (kMC) method. As a result, we found that the slow atoms tend to create nuclei and determine the island volume distribution, along with additional properties such as island density. This paper reports NMR measurements of the magnetic dipole moments of two high-K isomers, the 37/2$^-$, 51.4 m, 2740 keV state in $^{\rm 177}$Hf and the 8$^-$, 5.5 h, 1142 keV state in $^{\rm 180}$Hf by the method of on-line nuclear orientation. Also included are results on the angular distributions of gamma transitions in the decay of the $^{\rm 177}$Hf isotope. These yield high precision E2/M1 multipole mixing ratios for transitions in bands built on the 23/2$^+$, 1.1 s, isomer at 1315 keV and on the 9/2$^+$, 0.663 ns, isomer at 321 keV. The new results are discussed in the light of the recently reported finding of systematic dependence of the behavior of the g$_{\rm R}$ parameter upon the quasi-proton and quasi-neutron make up of high-K isomeric states in this region., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Fiber-based bidirectional photon extraction from nanoscale emitters and photon antibunching behavior between two outputs of two single mode optical fibers are experimentally demonstrated. Flakes of the epitaxial layer containing the InAs quantum dots (QDs) are fixed mechanically by both side with the edge faces of the single-mode-fiber (SMF) patch cables. The emitting photons from the single quantum dot are directly taken out of both side through the SMFs. Single-photon emission between two SMF outputs is confirmed by detecting non-classical antibunching in second-order photon correlation measurements with two superconducting single-photon detectors (SSPDs) and a time-amplitude converter (TAC). This simple opto-mechanical alignment-free single-photon emitter has advantage of robust stability more than 10 days and low-cost fabrication., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

We studied the size distribution and its scaling behavior of self-assembled InAlAs/AlGaAs quantum dots (QDs) grown on GaAs with the Stranski-Krastanov (SK) mode by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), at both 480{\deg}C and 510{\deg}C, as a function of InAlAs coverage. A scaling function of the volume was found for the first time in ternary alloy QDs. The function was similar to that of InAs/GaAs QDs, which agreed with the scaling function for the two-dimensional submonolayer homoepitaxy simulation with a critical island size of i = 1. However, a character of i = 0 was also found as a tail in the large volume., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Efficient injection of spin-polarized current into a semiconductor is a basic prerequisite for building semiconductor-based spintronic devices. Here, we use inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy to show that the efficiency of spin-filter-type spin injectors is limited by spin scattering of the tunneling electrons. By matching the Fermi-surface shapes of the current injection source and target electrode material, spin injection efficiency can be significantly increased in epitaxial ferromagnetic insulator tunnel junctions. Our results demonstrate that not only structural but also Fermi-surface matching is important to suppress scattering processes in spintronic devices., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The spin interaction between an electron and nuclei was investigated optically in a single self-assembled InAlAs quantum dot (QD). In spin dynamics, the correlation time of the coupled electron-nuclear spin system and the electron spin relaxation time play a crucial role. We examined on a positively charged exciton in a QD to evaluate these key time constants directly via the temporal evolution measurements of the Overhauser shift and the degree of circular polarization. Interference of a single photon generated from a single quantum dot is observed between two photon polarization modes. Each emitted single photon has two orthogonal polarization modes associated with the solid-state single photon source, in which two non-degenerate neutral exciton states are involved. High degree of preservation of spin states during energy relaxation processes mediated by optical phonons is demonstrated in a single quantum dot. Optical-phonon resonance and relevant suppression of spin relaxation are clearly identified as dip structures in photoluminescence excitation spectra probed by the positive trion emission. The absence of continuum states makes this observation possible under the cross-circularly polarized detection with respect to a circularly polarized pumping. Consequently, distinguishably high degree of circular polarization up to ~0.85 is achieved without applying external magnetic field at the optical-phonon resonance. Rate equation analysis reveals that the spin-flip probability during energy relaxation is restricted to less than 7.5%. It is also indicated that the spin flip time of the positive trion ground state is extended by more than 3 times compared with that of neutral exciton ground state. This corresponds to the spin flip time longer than 11 ns for the positive trion ground state. We demonstrated the cancellation of the external magnetic field by the nuclear field at one edge of the nuclear polarization bistability in single InAlAs quantum dots. The cancellation for the electron Zeeman splitting gives the precise value of the hole g-factor. By combining with the exciton g-factor that is obtained from the Zeeman splitting for linearly polarized excitation, the magnitude and sign of the electron and hole g-factors in the growth direction are evaluated., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

We report the hysteresis of optically-pumped nuclear spin polarization and the degree of circular polarization of photoluminescence on the excitation power and electron spin polarization in single InAlAs quantum dots. By increasing (or decreasing) the excitation power at a particular excitation polarization, an abrupt rise (or drop) and a clear hysteretic behavior were observed in the Overhauser shift of the photoluminescence of the exciton and exciton complexes from the same single quantum dot under an external magnetic field of 5 T. However, the degree of circular polarization shows different behaviors between a positively charged exciton and a neutral exciton or biexciton; further, only positively charged exciton exhibits the precisely synchronized change and hysteretic behavior. It is suggested that the electron spin distribution is affected by the flip-flop of electron-nuclear spins. Further, the hysteresis is observed as a function of the degree of circular polarization of the excitation light and its dependence on the excitation power is studied. The saturation of the Overhauser shift after the abrupt rise indicates the almost complete cancellation of the external magnetic field by the nuclear field created within the width that is decided by the correlation time between the electron and the nuclei spin system., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We have demonstrated experimentally the manipulation of exciton and nuclear spins in a single self-assembled In$_{0.75}$Al$_{0.25}$As/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As quantum dot. The oscillation of exciton and nuclear spin polarizations were clearly observed. The switching of the emissions in Zeeman split pair indicates that the exciton pair with opposite spins was created coherently via the continuum states and that we can control the electron and nuclear spin polarizations only by changing the delay time of the cross-linearly-polarized pulses. These suggest the high potentiality of electron and nuclear spin manipulation in a single QD via the continuum state., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

Parity-odd asymmetries in the electromagnetic decays of compound nuclei can sometimes be amplified above values expected from simple dimensional estimates by the complexity of compound nuclear states. In this work we use a statistical approach to estimate the root mean square (RMS) of the distribution of expected parity-odd correlations $\vec{s_{n}} \cdot \vec{k_{\gamma}}$, where $\vec {s_{n}}$ is the neutron spin and $\vec{k_{\gamma}}$ is the momentum of the gamma, in the integrated gamma spectrum from the capture of cold polarized neutrons on Al, Cu, and In and we present measurements of the asymmetries in these and other nuclei. Based on our calculations, large enhancements of asymmetries were not predicted for the studied nuclei and the statistical estimates are consistent with our measured upper bounds on the asymmetries., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

We propose a new method to realize a conversion of photon qubit and spin qubit using the effective magnetic field created by the nuclear polarization known as Overhauser field. We have built a CsI(Tl) gamma-ray detector array for the NPDGamma experiment to search for a small parity-violating directional asymmetry in the angular distribution of 2.2 MeV gamma-rays from the capture of polarized cold neutrons by protons with a sensitivity of several ppb. The weak pion-nucleon coupling constant can be determined from this asymmetry. The small size of the asymmetry requires a high cold neutron flux, control of systematic errors at the ppb level, and the use of current mode gamma-ray detection with vacuum photo diodes and low-noise solid-state preamplifiers. The average detector photoelectron yield was determined to be 1300 photoelectrons per MeV. The RMS width seen in the measurement is therefore dominated by the fluctuations in the number of gamma rays absorbed in the detector (counting statistics) rather than the intrinsic detector noise. The detectors were tested for noise performance, sensitivity to magnetic fields, pedestal stability and cosmic background. False asymmetries due to gain changes and electronic pickup in the detector system were measured to be consistent with zero to an accuracy of $10^{-9}$ in a few hours. We report the optical spectroscopic results of a single self-assembled InAlAs/Al GaAs quantum dot. The polarization-dependent shift of the Zeeman splitting in a single InAlAs QD has been observed. The induced Overhauser field is estimated to be 0.16 T in this InAlAs QD and the magnitude is shown to be controllable by the degree of circular polarization of excitation light., Comment: 4 pages,5 figures

The parity nonconserving spin rotation of neutrons in the 0.734-eV p-wave resonance of $^{139}La$ was measured with the neutron transmission method. Two optically polarized $^3He$ cells were used before and behind a a 5-cm long $^{139}La$ target as a polarizer and an analyzer of neutron spin. The rotation angle was carefully measured by flipping the direction of $^3He$ polarization in the polarizer in sequence. The peak-to-peak value of the spin rotation was found to be $ (7.4 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-3} $ rad/cm which was consistent with the previous experiments. But the result was statisticallly improved. The s-p mixing model gives the weak matrix element as $xW = (1.71 \pm 0.25)$ meV. The value agrees well with the one deduced from the parity-nonconserving longitudinal asymmetry in the same resonance.

Quantum computation using electron spins in three coupled dot with different size is proposed. By using the energy selectivity of both photon assisted tunneling and spin rotation of electrons, logic gates are realized by static and rotational magnetic field and resonant optical pulses.
