4. MADE Macro-Block III: Transitioning From the Optimized TF Coil Shape to the PF Coil System

Abstract

The MAgnet Design Explorer (MADE) is a Tokamak design algorithm developed initially for the DTT CS, and largely extended within the EUROfusion DEMO project [1]. MADE could function as a valuable tool for navigating the initial design stage of a tokamak project. In response to the technological developments in recent years, it has been deemed necessary to define a means capable of estimating how machine size and performance change in response to the target parameters imposed by plasma physics and by the performance of the superconducting magnet system. The MADE algorithm previously included two sequenced macro-blocks, the first dedicated to defining the toroidal magnetic field system, and the second to define the central solenoid of the machine. These macro-blocks generate two of the three main magnetic systems of the Tokamak. This paper describes the studies completed to define and implement the third macro-block, which models the poloidal coil system and the plasma vertical stability. The resulting suite of algorithms are now combined to reach an optimized winding pack architecture for all major tokamak coils at a given plant operating point. A case study based on ITER is presented in this work.

Abstract

FAST (Fusion Advanced Studies Torus), the Italian proposal of a Satellite Facility to ITER, is a compact tokamak (R$_0$ = 1.82 m, a = 0.64 m, triangularity $\delta$ = 0.4) able to investigate non-linear dynamics effects of $\alpha$-particle behavior in burning plasmas and to test technical solutions for the first wall/divertor directly relevant for ITER and DEMO. Currently, ENEA is investigating the feasibility of a superconducting solution for the magnet system. This paper focuses on the analysis of the CS (Central Solenoid) magnet thermal behavior. In particular, considering a superconducting solution for the CS which uses the room available in the resistive design and referring to one of the most severe scenario envisaged for FAST, the heat load of the CS winding pack due to AC losses is preliminarily evaluated. The results provide a tentative baseline for the definition of the strand requirements and conductor design, that can be accepted in order to fulfil the design requirements., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

10. Direct measurement of inter-filament resistance in Nb3Sn multi-filamentary strands

Abstract

In modeling the properties of superconducting multi-filamentary strands, the filament twist pitch and the inter-filament transverse resistivity play a crucial role in the definition of the current transfer length. This affects the AC losses of NbTi strands, or the transport properties of Nb3Sn wires subject to a bending strain. Although the effect of filament twist pitch on the critical current of the strand has been studied, the value of the inter-filament resistance in Nb3Sn strands is still undefined. We have performed a direct measurement of the inter-filament transverse resistance within the cross-section of a Nb3Sn multi-filamentary strand from room temperature to 4.2K. Results have been compared to the inter-filament resistance of a sample on which the outer copper stabilization layer was removed by chemical etching, obtaining interesting indications on the preferential current paths within the wire cross section., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present a compared experimental investigation of the (a,b) plane vortex-state complex resistivity at 48 GHz in YBaCuO, SmBaCuO and BiSrCaCuO (2212). In YBaCuO and SmBaCuO the field dependence of the response can be consistently described by a combination of flux flow and strong pair breaking due to the presence of lines of nodes in the gap. Abstract

We report measurements of the microwave complex resistivity at 48 GHz in SmBaCuO thin films. Measurements are performed with a moderate magnetic field, $\mu_{0}H<$ 0.8T, applied along the c-axis. We find that the complex resistivity presents clear sublinear field dependences, and that the imaginary part is remarkably sensitive to the moderate magnetic field. Interpretation considering an unusually strong pinning leads to very anomalous field dependences of the single-vortex viscosity and of the pinning constant. By contrast, allowing for a significant effect of the magnetic field on the depletion of the condensate, the data are quantitatively described by simple free-flux flow model, supplemented with two-fluid conductivity. In this frame, we obtain the vortex viscosity from the data. We compare vortex viscosity in SmBaCuO and in YBaCuO., Comment: RevTeX, 8 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

Nb 3 Sn is a superconductor of great relevance for perspective radiofrequency (RF) applications. We present for the first time surface impedance (Z s ) measurements at 15 GHz and low-RF field amplitude on Nb 3 Sn in high magnetic fields up to 12 T, with the aim of increasing the knowledge of Nb 3 Sn behavior in such conditions. Z s is a fundamental material parameter that directly gives useful information about the dissipative and reactive phenomena when the superconductor is subjected to high-frequency excitations. Therefore, we present an analysis of the measured Z s with the aim of extracting interesting data about pinning in Nb 3 Sn at high frequencies. From Z s , we extract the vortex motion complex resistivity to obtain the r-parameter and the depinning frequency p in high magnetic fields. The comparison of the results with the literature shows that the measured nu p on bulk Nb 3 Sn is several times greater than that of pure Nb. This demonstrates how Nb 3 Sn can be a good candidate for RF technological applications, also in high magnetic fields.

The latest version of the JT-60 Superconductor Advanced (JT-60SA) Toroidal Field (TF) conductor design resulting from the European (EU) and Japan common work is described. The TF system connections layout is shown together with the associated thermo-hydraulic calculations, thus ensuring a proper temperature margin.

Abstract

The conductor is designed for central solenoid (CS) and equilibrium field (EF) coils of JT-60 Super Advanced (JT-60SA). The studies have shown that the current sharing margin is increased by decreasing the rate of initial magnetization and the disruption has affected the outer low field EF coil.
