Mother–infant relationship development is influenced by maternal presence, proximity, and the frequency and duration of engagement. Proximity and dyadic engagement can be challenging when an infant is hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This study examined patterns of maternal proximity and engagement in a NICU in the Southwestern United States and identified thematic categories of alternate activities to engagement. Trained observers conducted 52 h of NICU observations, documenting maternal presence, patterns of proximity, engagement, nonengagement, and alternate activities to nonengagement and focused engagement. Results include data from 88 mother–infant dyads. Of the time mothers were in proximity to their infants, 83% of these instances occurred without active engagement. In contrast, focused dyadic engagement was noted in 97% of these observations, while unfocused engagement was recorded in 65% of instances. Mothers in proximity but not actively engaged were most often observed using a smartphone, a trend that was also observed when mothers were in unfocused engagement during nurturing social contexts. While it is expected that occasional interruptions to mother–infant interaction in the NICU will occur, more studies are needed to determine the implications of both brief and prolonged disruptions during dyadic interactions on interaction quality in the NICU. In diesem Beitrag wird der coronabedingte Berührungsentzug und der dadurch entstandene skin hunger aus phänomenologischer Perspektive beleuchtet. Dabei wird zunächst die Leiblichkeit des Subjektes thematisiert und erläutert, dass zwischen Leiblichkeit und Berührung ein gegenseitiges Konstitutionsverhältnis besteht. Darauf aufbauend, wird die Haut als Medium der Berührbarkeit und zugleich ihre identitätsstiftende Bedeutung vorgestellt. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Leib und dem Haut- Ich macht deutlich, dass das Subjekt ständig mit sich selbst, der Welt und potentiell mit seinen Mitmenschen in Berührung steht. Die Zwischenleiblichkeit und die in ihr grundgelegte Möglichkeit zur Fremdberührung, welche stets durch die Haut vermittelt ist, eröffnen ein Verständnis für die Gewichtigkeit der Haut-Nähe und Haut-Berührung für die intersubjektive Kommunikation und für die menschliche Vulnerabilität. Schließlich werden zentrale Gesichtspunkte des permanenten Berührungsentzuges, welcher einen erheblichen Vulnerabilitätsfaktor darstellt, vermittelt.

Type I aldolases catalyze carbon–carbon bond-forming reactions to form a diverse set of products in nature but often display high selectivity for their natural substrates. One such aldolase, NahE, is known to catalyze the condensation of pyruvate with a wide range of aldehydes to give trans -4-phenyl-2-oxo-3-butenoic acids under mild aqueous conditions. These α,β-unsaturated 2-oxo acids are versatile intermediates for synthetic transformations. NahE has also been used for the synthesis of α-fluoro-β-hydroxy esters, β-hydroxy esters, and quinaldic acids. However, a thorough study of the substrate scope on a practical scale has not been performed for the native NahE-catalyzed aldol condensation reaction. Here we report that NahE can accept >35 (hetero)aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes. Most condensation products derived from substituted benzaldehydes were isolated in >95% yield without need for further purification, while non-benzaldehyde substrates gave the corresponding products in isolated yields between 26% and 98%. Reactions could be performed on gram scale. These products could be converted into α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids in up to 93% yield over two steps. This reaction sequence was also performed using whole cells in up to 79% yield. This work demonstrates that NahE is a robust, efficient, and versatile catalyst for organic synthesis. The paper deals with the transformation and finitude of bodies in the lifelong aging process and the social conditions that predispose them focussing on close relationships in a pandemic context. The material was generated during virtually conducted group discussions with people between the ages of 60 and 80. The virtual space formed both a boundary and a space of possibility to (re)read bodies retrospectively. The narrated »body biographies« represent negotiations of the subject in the context of the pandemic situatedness and agency. Participants reflected on the ambivalence of the restrictions imposed by regulations and lockdowns, the construction as a risk group, and the resulting perception of corporeality. The data points to the lack of physical closeness relationships and the possibilities of closeness in virtual spaces. The reflexive, intra-biographical encounters oscillate between self-assurance and transformative processes of self-formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Proximity is a component of social situations that often receives little explicit attention in everyday experience but becomes especially poignant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Ethnographic data allow us to demonstrate how proximity is produced and avoided when bodies are not only coded as infectious and thus vulnerable, but also experienced in this vulnerability. Following the phenomenological concepts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Hermann Schmitz, this path of experience will be reconstructed with the body at the centre of the hermeneutic interpretations. Furthermore, the field of everyday transformations through the pandemic will serve a more general interest: How is the experience of proximity integrated into the physical approach to the world? An insightful approach to this aspect of experience will be presented. Physicality and proximity are to be related by interweaving phenomenological theories and observational data in order to enable a perspective on social situations that approaches the experience in a comprehensible way. Psychoanalytic authors often describe virtual encounters as ›disembodied‹. This makes us think of the body as absent in virtual clinical settings and leads us to interpret the choice of virtual settings as a withdrawal from the reality of embodied existence. By drawing on literature and through the examination of a dream from a partly virtual analysis, this essay explores the possibility of feeling close in virtual encounters. Drawing on the theory of José Bleger, I understand the body and technology as a part of the frame. It is essential in my view that we continue to question and broaden our psychoanalytic understanding of the virtual in order to improve our ability to listen and dream in this novel setting. • Thirty eight doublet electronic states of the Rydberg molecule NaHe are studied by means of numerical solution of the Schrodinger equation using the finite element method. • High Rydberg Σ–states have several wells and barriers at large internuclear distances due to oscillations of the radial electron density in the Rydberg states of the sodium atom. Der Beitrag setzt sich zum Ziel, Identitätsvorgaben der ungarndeutschen Literatur, die historische und alltagsweltliche Erfahrungen räumlich strukturieren, zu untersuchen (v.a. Symbolik, Figuren, Konfiguration, Handlungssequenzen, die dem Leser Identitätselemente und komplexe Identitätsmuster zur Identifikation anbieten). Die räumlichen Strukturen werden unter Verwendung von Instrumentarien diskurs-semantischer und kognitiv-semantischer Ansätze analysiert. Über Errichtung, Etablierung, Modifizierung, Verunsicherung oder Auflösung ungarndeutscher Raumsemantiken sollen exemplarische Texte — Gedichte von Georg Fath, Claus Klotz, Valeria Koch, Robert Hecker, Robert Becker, und Prosawerke von Ludwig Fischer, Márton Kalász, Béla Bayer, István Elmer und Robert Balogh — Auskunft geben. Der Beitrag soll auch die Applizierbarkeit der behandelten Identitätsvorgaben erörtern. Dabei wird auf Unterschiede zwischen dem deutsch- und dem ungarischsprachigen Strang der ungarndeutschen Literatur eingegangen, die nicht in der Sprache, vielmehr in dem Raumsinn der Textproduzenten gesucht werden. Spatial agglomeration is well theorized within regional studies and economic geography, with firm- and industry-level advantages generally attributable to the strategic benefits derived from spatial proximity. Increasingly, alternative proximity types have been explored to explain firm relationships within and between industries. This paper applies a novel social network analysis (SNA) approach to analyze city clustering as a function of both spatial and non-spatial factors - namely, economic, sociocultural and geopolitical. Based on the internal reporting structures of Australia-based firms, it explores how ‘global clusters’ are more useful in understanding industry dynamics and processes than hierarchical lists of cities of cascading importance. Intimacy as one of the basic features of interpersonal close relationships is the main issue of the review. The review focuses on findings which have occurred in literature in relation to intimacy in the last few years and interconnects such knowledge with results from classical well-known studies. The text introduces the topic of intimacy from its definition to the very latest issues with an emphasis on psycho-social context. Three specific areas are chosen for further inquiry. The areas very often arise from contemporary foreign studies which focus on intimacy. They are: intimacy in the context of sexuality, fear of intimacy, and a phenomenon of public intimacy. The outcomes of studies are presented within a broader context and compared with how the issue was viewed in the earlier stages of the research. Hewes A. K. and Lyons D. I. (2008) The humanistic side of eco-industrial parks: champions and the role of trust, Regional Studies. Two leading advocates of eco-industrial parks (EIPs), Valdemar Christensen and Peter Lowitt, participated in a qualitative research study focused on their role in developing EIPs in Ukraine and Massachusetts, USA, respectively. Christensen formerly championed industrial symbiosis in Kalundborg, Denmark, and Lowitt shepherded the process at the Londonderry EIP in New Hampshire, USA. Based on the empirical data collected from the methods of ethnography and grounded theory, a systematic analysis of champion behaviour revealed emergent themes that champions of EIPs emphasize social relationships as opposed to technological connections...
